Today, I visit the 5 Iron vs 5 Hybrid debate. Which club should you hit as a shorter hitter? Which will work out of the rough or fairway? I attempt to give you some information that may help you decide. I hope you enjoy!

hey guys Mr short hitter here today I’ve
got a five
hybrid and a five iron I’ll put the
specs for each of these clubs in the
description of this video because I know
that question will come up basically
what I want to do today is maybe help
you
guys determine which one of these clubs
work better for you I’m 160 yards from
this flag
here
it’s pretty good for the iron I hit it
pretty
solid so that is definitely short right
to the five hybrid we’ll switch back and
forth a couple
times
okay we hit a draw over there to the
left
side with the
hybrid another draw left looking down on
these
clubs there’s no doubt which one of
these clubs looks easier to hit even
though this five iron I’m hitting is a
game improvement five iron and with the
light sitting up it still is not the
most inviting
Club head right didn’t hit it too
solid that one I did hit
well actually see that one got the pin
High okay that one a little the right
side of the green might have barely
caught the right Fringe
there that
one right at the flag just a little
right at the flag let’s get up there and
see where they are welcome to the first
annual Mr sh hitter Easter egg hunt Mr
sh hitter do you like my pink sparkly
ears yes Lely I like your ears I love
Easter okay that’s great you love Easter
love the
enthusiasm so you all know the rules
what is the difference between a red and
a yellow penalty area that’s a different
video Aqua woman Mr short hitter is my
egg supposed to be in front or back of
my stance you’re not hitting the eggs
leely you’re simply finding the eggs
let’s get started 1 2 3
go around a golf should not be an Easter
egg hunt that’s why you should check out
this video sponsor golf ball Planet golf
ball planet has been the number one
supplier of used golf balls since 1997
and you can save 18% by using my code
M18 I also put a link in the description
got it hey that’s my line that was a
virtual Dead Heat there was a couple
balls that were kind of rip Fringe
couple balls just left Fring or a little
bit left of the Green from the Fairway
the clubs performed pretty close let’s
say we have this shot we’re into the
wind 159 yards so I just have a little
grasp behind the ball
here first let’s hit the
hybrid
okay so that ball was nice and
high kind of maybe 20 ft right of the
flag or so but not a problem hitting the
hybrid out of that Li so let’s take a
very similar
lie okay so that was very chunky the
ball shot out to the right it’s going to
be a lot harder to get this five iron
with a little grass behind the ball try
the same thing again with the
hybrid hit that one a little
lower but right at the green just like
it kind of just Glides through that
rough so we’re going to do a similar lie
with the five iron again
[Music]
now I caught that one pretty good felt a
little heavy but I think because this is
a game improvement iron it has a little
bit more mass at the back so I was able
to catch that ball let’s do one
more
hybrid super
high little left of the flag and again
it’s like the rough isn’t even there
when I’m hitting this club lighter rough
I think as the lies get worse the
hybrid’s most likely going to do
better so the rough did kind of cat that
one a little bit I think it’s shorter
the green with this being a thicker sole
game improvement iron it really helps it
get through the rough a lot better than
a regular five iron would but it’s
definitely not getting through the rough
as well as that hybrid the hybrid just
kind of Glides through it like the rough
isn’t even there and I’m imagining the
worst the LIE the bigger differential
you’re going to get between the five
iron and the five hybrid go back on the
course and finish up but I went inside I
hit five irons and five hybrids the five
iron had seven ball speed the five
hybrid had 113 ball speed the launch
with the five iron was 17.1 de versus
19.2 with the five hybrid so the carry
yards with the five iron was
152
yards versus 164 with the five hybrid
the total 158 with a five iron versus
168 with a hybrid so
even though the hybrid carried 12 yards
further it still had two yards less roll
the height of the five iron 20 yards the
height of the five hybrid 27 yards okay
guys so now I’m going to hit a couple on
the green with both the five hybrid and
the five iron and go up there look at
the ball marks see how much they
released the greens are pretty soft
right now so I think once the summer
hits the differences between these two
clubs are going to be magnified I’ll hit
those and we’ll go look at the results
so this is about 14 ft where this five
iron released to so the five irons
actually flew a little bit shorter about
10 ft of release on this five iron so
this is one of the two five
hybrids about 6 ft of release so lastly
this was the last five iron that I hit
on the green 7t of release long Irons
used to be the strength of my game I
would play a lot of courses to where you
could land it short or land It On The
Fringe and run it up but course is now
you have to fly it more often and I
think it’s just a lot more predictable
flying the ball as close as you can to a
flag stick versus having to hit a five
iron and land it 25 ft short of the pin
so I hope this video helped you decide
which one of these clubs may work out
better for you we’re on a soft green and
we can see the five hybrid stopped twice
as fast so just imagine the difference
if these greens were firm if you like

next time Mr short

  1. Funny. I did the same thing the other day between. a six iron and six hybrid. In my case the six iron prevailed Like you however the 5 hybrid works better than the 5 iron for me. Thanks.

  2. Happy Easter all.
I, like dhobious, have taken the 3 and 4 irons out of the bag. Keeping the 5 iron to punch out my Easter eggs from under the trees HA. Nah i can hit the 5 but i have more confidence in my hybrids. ( carry Hywood, 3 and 4 hybrids)

  3. Thanks for this MSH, very useful! A few months ago I dropped the 5 iron (23 degree) for a 5 hybrid (25 degree) mainly as I’m not getting the height and carry. The hybrid is actually nearer my 6 iron loft (26 degree) but fits in nicely in that 5 iron space and works great in these winter months. Now thinking of possibly switching the 4 hybrid for a 7-8 wood in that gap with my 5 wood but not sure whether to keep the hybrid or go with another fairway wood.

  4. Funny commercial. Like the creativity. Great video comparing the 5i and 5hybrid. Like the 5i for punching out over the 5 hybrid.

  5. I kid myself thinking that I can still (predictably) hit a 3,4, or 5 iron… I’m going to be testing hybrids this week! PS – The “supporting actresses” crack me up 😂. Cheers, MSH!

  6. Funny you're talking about 5 irons today. My last shot today was a 155 yd par 3. Stuck it 2 feet from the pin with my 5i and an easy swing. Been feelin like a Playa all day, even though I'm not! Still waiting on my new Takomos. Afraid I'll be chasing my tail for awhile trying to get used to the new/different lofts. I have a 4 hybrid and need to use it more. You've inspired me again. Going to start pulling it out of the back a bit more. Happy Easter.

  7. I play Cleveland hybrid style irons, and I do carry the 5 iron. But I’m just as likely to choke down slightly on my 7 wood and hit that instead of the 5 iron. ⛳️

  8. I'm trying to decide between a 3/4 Ping G410 hybrid I have and getting a 7 wood instead. I just don't hit the hybrid well. Looking at some Sub 70 products for new irons, wedges and fairway woods (5 and 7). Current clubs are 30 years old except for the used driver (Cobra F9) and 3 wood (Ping G410) I bought from Global Golf.

  9. New subscriber here. Catching up on your past vids. Your vid sealed the deal on getting the Tacoma's. Thank you, great content!

  10. One of your best videos ever. I play a lot of public courses and you don’t often get a good lie. Hybrids are becoming a bigger part of my game.

  11. Man, this video is right on time! I have been seriously thinking about putting a 5 hybrid in the bag and pulling the 5i out. I'll be watching this before I go to sleep later…….thanks MSH!!!

  12. Ive been carrying a 4 hybrid and a 4i for about 2 months now. Been hitting them both in different situations and the hybrid is winning. I just feel more confident I'm going to strike it well.

  13. Good comparison. I've not had a 3-4 iron in my bag for pushing 20 years. 5 hybrid and carry 5 iron. something to consider on hybrids is if you have to punch out often they go higher for sure. That takes practice. Watch the lie angles on hybrids they can be more upright. I'm 56 now. Still have 78-80 7 iron speed and 98-100 DSS. Hcp 3.2

  14. Are them girls real actresses? Looks like they're in their natural element. "Got it!" "Hey, that's my line." L😄O😃L

  15. 5h is a great club, but some of my most memorable golf shots were with a 5 iron. It doesn't scare me in the least. In fact, I will always have it in my bag. In the old days, we used to do iron fitting with 5 irons. It was then considered a mid iron vs a long iron nowadays.

  16. Thank you for video, curious of your SS driver and what distances you hit all your clubs
