guys The Boys Are Back In Town Boys Are
Back In
Town we’re back it’s just us there’s no
guests so I don’t know what you guys are
expecting but it’s just us
but plenty of guests to come really um
man a plethora of guests as well not
just players we’ve got you know
different types of uh football
connoisseurs coming through to share
their uh to share their thoughts on
things but welcome back to suited and
booted ladies and gentlemen I your host
Jerome to my left we have Lord mahasi
and to my right one leg GD one leg g d
now I guess we might as well start with
this on a somber
note um uh our co-host our dear friend
Gavin Denise has ruptured his
ACL I was going to say let’s get a round
of applause I don’t
know let’s not uh you’re going to get
this episode a couple weeks after it
actually happened um but gav done your
ACL quickly run through the listeners
how it happened um so basically who do
we be playing we’re playing Oakley
Monday night the catch-up game actually
yes uh because of the riots that
happened at the uh round four I think it
was yes um 90th minute done this a
thousand times in my life everyone has
balls dropped in between both of us me
and the player I’ve gone to just go body
to body and as I’ve gone to go body to
body knees buckled new straight away
second ACL some knees I’ll put the video
for you guys to see uh it’s pretty uh
pretty graphic uh one leg goes to Dandy
the other one goes to Oakley that’s
right it’s one of those situations so so
what what actually happened though so
yeah you go to a bump him what your leg
get your foot get stuck so the ball the
ball’s up in the air it bounces between
uh in front of us and then typical I’ve
just gone to put my body in front of him
knock him off put my body in front and
as I’ve pushed off the right leg my knee
has just buckled inwards you’ll see in
the video instead of it me extending
like this my knee goes inwards so as my
knee goes inward
the ligament uh obviously goes uh
complete ACL rupture uh slight damage to
my miniscus and then surgery tomorrow um
which is good I guess good turnaround I
think it’s about seven eight day
turnaround y um the surgeon has done my
other ACL before so oh so he knows he
knows your body pors from from injury to
first game back what was your last one
many um so eight years ago I done my
first one my left ACL and and my first
game back was about 8 months post op um
obviously I was 20 at that time 2021 so
fingers crossed bro I feel like everyone
that has an ACL always ends up having
two like either on the same leg or a
different leg like obviously yes the
weak the if it’s on the same leg it’s
going to be weaker but I feel like
everyone lightning strikes twice almost
I would I would assume it’s something to
do with biomechanics yeah or body
compensation um chromosones chromosones
also how about this right Mitch Juke I
Mitch correct correct me if I’m wrong
but I spoke to him about him when he did
his ACL when he was in Japan from ACL to
first game back 3 months really
wow that is so quick yeah um guys I
guess we’ll touch we’re here at the
injury uh topic
now uh rash what’s the worst injury
you’ve ever had oh wor
by by length by time I’d say so yeah one
that affected you the most that made you
you know it’s funny because yeah depend
depends how you define worst but by
length is broken toe broken toe this my
fourth toe yeah so not even yeah and and
basically when I so what happened was I
had broken it oh [ __ ] this a stupid
story what were you doing I think I was
13 or 14 at the at the time and I was
watching and I swear on my life this is
true I was watching a Jet Lee movie in
my lounge room Jet Lee yeah Bruce Lee no
there’s Jet Lee too oh trust me Bruce
Lee and Jet Lee right right so I’m
watching a jet Le movie I go
into um I go into the the kitchen going
to he some of my food up put it into the
microwave and where the microwave is is
like it’s in a Cupboard with two walls
next to it right I put my food
in heat it up and then that’s right I
take the food out and I go I’m going to
close this with my foot like Jet Lee and
so I go to kick the door and I hit the
brick wall next to it broke my toe I was
like oh my well at the time I obviously
didn’t know but it was like the worst
pain I’ve ever felt for about 2 minutes
and then it went away um and then I had
a footall Nationals tournament coming up
and uh so I decided not to get a scan on
it and just take painkillers and play
and then played the whole tournament
came back and then after that I went and
got a scan on because it’s just getting
worse the pain doctor goes yeah you’ve
you’ve not just broken it but now you’ve
also mangled it because of playing on it
and whatever should laugh um sent me to
a
podiatrist the went to a podiatrist the
podiatrist said you got three options I
can’t remember the exact length but it
was like you got three options you can
go in a boot and it’ll be um eight weeks
till you come back and Jog J you can do
nothing and it will be uh 12 weeks
before you come back and Jog or you can
cut it off and you run weeks cut off
your to and he said it in full blank
face not even joking so you can
decapitate your toe yeah because there
you don’t need that that’s crazy at all
so so talking about that about doctors
right because I think also going into
injuries doctors or your surgeons are so
important so when I first on my ACL 8
years ago I remember obviously getting
the scan getting my MRI going to the
surgeon’s office and then him sitting me
down and saying what had actually
happened yeah and I walked in there and
at the club the club at the time I was
at Melbourne City and they sent me to
this surgeon I sit there I’m not even
joking with my old man and the guy looks
at it he’s got it up on the X-ray screen
or whatever and he goes yeah you won’t
you won’t be playing for 12 months
exactly how he said it right he goes
you’ve done your ACL you won’t play for
the next 12 months how did you feel when
he said that I fainted I fainted my
first ACL I fainted I go out wait you
fainted because of the pain or for what
he said for what he said how brutal he
was you know you fainted yeah because
love football I
didn’t like I didn’t think I’d done my
ACL and obviously that was like at the
very back of my mind and just the way he
went about it as a 20-year-old the only
thing at the time I did was football the
way he went about it was
like that just that killed me from a
surgeon Specialists and surgeons are
[ __ ] so from there I go out of the
clinic I had the MRIs already done I’d
spoken to like a few people that I knew
and I contacted a friend of mine that I
played with whose his father was a
plastic surgeon right a really well
known plastic surgeon I called him I
told him what had happened I go listen
I’ve done my ACL just wanted you know
and he goes gav leave it with me I’m
going to call you back in 5 minutes he
calls me back 5 minutes later and he
goes come to the Avenue in Windsor
you’re going to see a surgeon that I
know oh what’s his name David Young bro
he did my he did my KNE yeah he did on
my miniscus yeah so I go see him I walk
in he looks at the scans he goes gav
we’ll be back in 6 months damn and I go
and and I was the happiest kid ever at
the time and 8 years
later it’s like deja vu happened
contacted the plastic surgeon another
person also helped me out um getting
through to him um because he’s he’s up
there with the with elite elite
footballers Elite AFL players all the
cricketers
everything didn’t do the GP or nothing
got me in straight away the next day
after i’ done it on Monday and surgery 7
days later so shout out David Young yeah
so I guess I got two
questions what about playing a league or
playing at the top level what was the
worst injury you had and what was going
through your head and what did you do to
like you know motivate yourself to get
back because they all say it footballers
are the most depressed when they’re
injured because they’re watching their
teammates train they’re watching their
teammates play they sit at home all day
they might have a few rehab sessions
which kill you seen those videos of of
players getting um doing rehab and
crying like the pain of like when a
physio or whatever will just push on
something and they’ll be screaming and
they have to go through that did that
happen to you at any
stage
um my my story is probably a little bit
different like if I’m honest I had a lot
of my
professional playing career I didn’t
enjoy playing that much so when I was
injured it wasn’t I was didn’t feel it
like that I didn’t feel feel I didn’t
feel like left
out and to be fair I wasn’t injured that
much so I never had a really big injury
that was longterm so I never had the
experience of 3 months 6 months
something like that so but it was
probably just maybe a 2 weeks here or 3
weeks there that was like a a nice break
for me cuz I to be honest I didn’t like
obviously by stopping early I I wasn’t
enjoying it a lot of my professional
career I wasn’t enjoying playing and I
wasn’t enjoying
just a lot about that environment so it
was probably a little bit of like a
mental break for me if I got like a
10-day period out so I don’t know if the
other people like that at all but that’s
just how I felt me being honest look
guys just to sort of uh give you a heads
up there will come a time where we get
into rash’s story properly I don’t think
now’s the appropriate
time but he’s got an amazing story on
the mental side of football and uh what
he had to go through on that side of
things and and retiring early and stuff
but I don’t think we’ll get into that
now well all right well I’ll give you um
I’ll give
you this is this is off on another
freaking segue but on the um I did my I
did my my medial ligament twice and
those were um very very painful they
were quick injuries but extremely
painful um the first one I did was a
dark at Amy Park um and I was out for it
was a grade two te um and I was out for
would have been like 10 days is that all
well it’s not supposed to be like that
but we didn’t have any players cuz there
was International break so players were
away well it wasn’t a break but
international players were away um we
had injuries this that but then we had
this game in Central Coast and there
wasn’t that many PE players to play so I
had it just strap wrapped up like crazy
and played through that but then I did
that same knee the same injury my it was
the week so when I was at wanders the
last game of the season was against
Melvin Victory and actually really
wanted to play in that game it was like
really excited that was a period where I
was really enjoyed my football and then
in
training uh two days or three days
before the game got caught in a tackle
Bor fell onto it again tore the medial
again and I was like that bro oh my God
man I remember being in the shower and
like like vomiting and dry
reaching like vomiting into my mouth and
dry eing because of the pain um and then
like every night I couldn’t sleep cuz
every time you’d roll cuz obviously it’s
this ligament here for those that can’t
see the inside of your knee um and I try
to roll over in bed and I just feel my
foot hang hang that way and wouldn’t
come across so that was bad but then
that period that was the period that um
I actually went to freaking Peru cuz I
so after that I didn’t get a contract
with Wanderers and cuz I was injured
there was this in my mind was like well
who’s going to give me a contract I’m
injured can’t even walk um so I went to
Peru and did my a Oscar through that
period again sorry we’ll get to that
because that’s C have you guys seen Mr
Deeds the movie Mr Deeds with Adam
Sandler no yes yes okay you know how his
Butler’s addicted to
feet yeah yes yeah you needed him to
just move your foot yeah yeah to help me
over yeah you haven’t seen that the
butler who’s addicted to feet Mr Deeds
it’s
you no I haven’t seen it cuz it’s about
me um that’s crazy yeah but no no crazy
stories I’ve seen people I’ve witnessed
people getting you know cortisones into
the bottom of their foot and like
screaming and like I’ve seen it but I I
quter Zone into the foot yeah like just
crazy [ __ ] cuz quone needles like thick
aren’t they my dad had in his back
they’re crazy like I think this is well
this is for definitely people don’t
understand fans or um lower level
players how sore and how much pain Pro
players are in even when they’re playing
like just constantly I remember at some
point at one point I think Bess was
saying it um someone asked him or how
you feeling with something and or you’re
not feeling good at the moment and he
said like I haven’t felt I I haven’t
felt 100% to play a game since I was
freaking 18 bro they say that Pro
footballers are never 100% bro never
yeah never never you always got
something tightness a little it’s like
it’s crazy I forgot who I was talking to
before the Oakley game might have been
der or something I go today’s the first
time I actually feel really good you
never P this why this is why I get
superstitious you never say that [ __ ] oh
you said that before the game when yeah
you never say that [ __ ] man um but then
even like I think in terms of like
injuries and ACLS and everything this
one compared to my first one mentally
I’m I’m a lot better I knew after the
first one um what to expect what to
expect like I remember I did it and
straight away like you see in the video
I go down I knew straight away it was
ACL fysio runs over and goes gav you
want me to like do the movement I said I
go don’t even worry about I know it’s
I’ve know I’ve done it um as I get
stretched off like rash was saying I was
like a little bit of laded I had like a
few snakes and it was like Easter at the
time so we had Easter eggs I was
chucking them down otherwise I was like
help with ACR yeah and um and then from
there and then from
there from there in terms of like just
reaching out the first my first ACL I
didn’t speak to anyone for like 3 months
I had mates I didn’t even know i’ done
my KNE what the [ __ ] yeah but then
crazy a is a years ago when I’d first
done it I was just playing football
Solly football at the time because of
the ACL I turned to coaching and now I
have the academy which is uh because of
because of the the ACL so blessing in
disguise that really is he yeah you got
and that’s just like a uh you know you
know me I’m the number one hater of like
um life coaches and all that but that
that’s that’s an excellent example of
how uh you make
uh you lemons you make lemonade baby
well back to what Chris was saying I
think that this is a prime example of if
you’re playing npl and you’re above a
certain age you actually need to have
something else as a backup or another
stream of income purely if this sort of
stuff happens like you do your ACL or or
whatever you’re not kicking a ball for
months mate so it’s like where’s that
money coming from do you have savings do
you and I I’m not one to talk but [ __ ]
like do you know what I mean this is why
yeah yeah exactly the coaching is really
good for gav and he used an injury to
create that that was born out of an
injury you might never have had a
coaching Academy if you didn’t do your
ACL so npl players I guess or anyone
playing at a semi-pro level uh have that
I guess I’m not a money expert I really
am not but have I I would have that
money
have that money the npl money as like
play around money well I think I think
that’s another thing is like
um a lot of people ask me about how did
I start the academy how did I get into
it and sometimes when you actually have
no other option is when you start
actually thinking and becoming creative
you got no choice and the way it
happened with me was like so so Random I
I was doing nothing just rehab at the
time you know I was probably two months
into rehab um um and one of my friends
that that speaks Spanish he goes gav um
there’s a Spanish day at St Kevin right
do you want to come and um run a
football football class for them all
right no worries I’ll do the Spanish day
at St Kevin did it with him normally
what I would do you know train myself
set up the drills everything um and the
kids loved it you know we did it in all
in Spanish we did drills played games
everything and after the session Our
Father comes up to me and goes oh gab uh
do you do you coach yourself and I just
lied of course you did I li I’ve been
ages I go yeah yeah I just um take my
number here and just just hit me up you
know the next day he calls me and goes
gav um I want you to do a one-onone for
my kids I got two sons you know I was 20
at the time just on ACL only ever played
football never had any income in my life
right so I go oh yeah he’s got two boys
in my head I go all right he’s got two
boys I I’ll charge 20 bucks aead that’s
40 bucks an hour I’m laughing I go 40
bucks an hour I’m laughing right so I
set up the
session lock it in comes down with the
two kids I run the session and obviously
I’m kind of like in rehab mode so
anything to for me to do to do my rehab
touching the ball helping them out and
everything was like a buzz cuz I was
like training myself with the kids yeah
slowly get back into it I’ll do the
session pays me 40 bucks and he goes gav
you know how to to do this he goes you
really know how to coach and you’re
really good with kids he goes he go this
is I’m not even joking this is what
happened he goes listen never again tell
me it’s 20 bucks an hour from now on you
charge 40 bucks an hour and I’ve and
I’ve got two kids so I’m giving you 80
bucks and next week I’m going to bring
more kids for you and and I’m just going
to keep bringing you more kids and every
parent that asks you it’s 40 bucks an
hour and that’s how it started in
2016 um and still today he is a great
mentor and he’s been in business for
over 20 years um and every time he’s
helped me with that he reaches out to me
and helps me with um all those things
that I had no idea about I was just new
into business and you definitely had no
idea because $20 per kid is [ __ ]
ludicrous maybe eight years ago maybe to
be would have been all right would have
been all right really yeah $20 per
think for one1 my mind was like my mind
was like okay if I got a job at Co what
would I be on maybe 20 bucks an hour oh
yeah it’s double so I was like oh yeah
done you know like that’s um I’m doing
it playing football you know with kids
just on pricing and now I work for
him I know of um people that charge 300
bucks an hour for one ones these days
yeah but for one-on ones yeah correct
it’s it’s very like that’s a whole Topic
in itself and and I don’t know if we
plan to speak about it or not
buty one-onone H I would never pay that
ever yes you wouldn’t but if you had the
money right if you it’s going back to
that Manchester United Guy saying that
you’ve got a you’ve got a a coach that
has lived a certain life experience and
has a certain
expect expectation expertise expertise
um
experation uh that that is it’s not just
like someone who did a course this is
someone that’s done 10,000 hours of
something and really knows it that’s
like [ __ ] if I got if got 300 bucks if
I’m if these kids go to St Kevin
probably has 300 bucks to spare to do an
hour session with their with a genius
you know what I mean of course so like
can I can I ask I had the money I would
do yeah answer this don’t go off [ __ ]
don’t go off track answer this for me
tell me right either one of you
whatever coaching acmy one-on-one
sessions they’re popping up everywhere
everyone’s got one hell you’ve got one
each 5 years time I even have my damn
own who knows I
won’t how do you differentiate and I
know you guys are going to you know talk
highly of yourselves but how do you
differentiate between what’s a scam
what’s not because I see it popping up
all the time I saw one on Instagram the
other day a sponsored ad hey I’m such
and such I played two games for
Leicester city in
1985 um do you does your child do you
think your child is a talented
footballer and has what it takes to go
pro well this is the program for him
this is what you call Pathway to
professional football um we’re going to
have all these professional coaches and
all these contacts worldwide and we can
get you here and we can do this play a
pay a small fee of $500 up front and
whatever I see it all the time yeah
right you guys obviously legit cuz I’ve
I’ve worked with Gavin I see how he does
it it’s it’s legit as can be
and rash has told me about his
philosophy which I don’t think many
other
coachies
have you’re not going to mention them
because you probably know the people but
did you guys grow up withies around you
thinking scam scam cuz I’ve heard of a
few there’s one in particular that I’m
not going to mention where it was a
massive thing where I’d love to know
which one that is I’ll tell you off Mike
cuz you never know I I I I would say and
it’s so funny to think about it in this
way um but you sort of I think you would
probably choose them a little bit the
way you would choose a Vietnamese
restaurant right so like if you go to
the one if you go if you see the one
that’s got the perfect branding it’s a
big name heaps of people like it’s
massive probably it’s not going to be
you probably want that Vietnamese
talking as a as a parents perspective
yeah you probably want to go to the
Vietnamese restaurant that’s like three
star barely even a name on the building
like it’s like where where Russian I
started right with Daniel
sill at the start he had absolutely no
one you know absolutely no one and to be
fair when it did start falling apart
let’s just say because he did have a
very successful Academy um and I’ve
spoken to him um about this is and he
he’ll he’ll always say the best time I
had it was when I had 40 kids and it was
just me and I didn’t have to worry about
anyone else and it and it was I had
control once it got too big and out of
hand and there was too many people
involved and too many coaches and too
many parents then it just went to [ __ ]
well can I say this though which is true
which is true like like Daniel I don’t
know him and he got and like this is
absolutely not a slight to River Plate
or whatever but what I found is what
you’re talking about is sort of The
Branding that River Plate had when I was
younger so it’s like professional Club
so but it wasn’t bro when you went down
there it was a Vietnam it was a real
like nonar in the back type restaurant
let’s not let’s not talk about River
Plate let’s talk about theseis that
Barca Academy Milan so what do they
actually do well they they would send
not all of them so I don’t want to group
them all because there are some that are
legit for example Derby County when we
were growing up was a legit relationship
with the actual Derby County they would
send actual Derby County coaches over
this there was a connection there a
pathway to get you to Derby County right
these other ones majority of them let’s
say 90% of them use the brand name it’s
it they’ve bought a used a license it’s
a revenue stream
for whoever and the coaches that are
sent out are not the legit coaches from
I won’t say the clubs cuz I don’t want
to put any of the specifics into it but
they’re not the CL there’s no connection
directly to that club right there’s as
much of a connection to that club as I
have that’s cuz I’ve got a friend that
knows a friend and I have a email
address and a phone number that I could
contact if someone’s unbelievable I
could send them to the biggest Club
tomorrow if they’re unbelievable well
you got to look at it like this you got
you got to look at it like this right
why the [ __ ] and I’m using them as an
example right let’s just say cuz Chelsea
don’t have one so we’ll keep it safe
let’s say why would Chelsea run a
football program in Melbourne when
they’ve already got incredible Academy
talent in their home country yeah so I
as far as I know that when Derby did it
there was something about if they get
one purse one kid from Australia to sign
in that’s a success that goes over there
in signs they would consider the whole
project as a success and then James
Meredith went and that so it’s like okay
that that project was a success right
from their side I don’t it it they
wouldn’t most of them are not doing that
and again either it’s a person that owns
it that’s you paying for a license from
that club to use that name or it’s the
club for the prices in general it’s so
ridiculous you know um just just shows
themselves but the hard the caveat in
all of this
is it’s not black and white which is
hard as a parent and I know it’s
annoying but it’s like it could be the
biggest Academy and they let’s say they
have 20 different groups and 20
different coaches that take all the
groups one of those coaches could
actually be unbelievable yeah so then
you could go to one of the biggest acmy
but get the best coaching just because
that coach is amazing but you could also
go to one of the smaller acms and and a
good coach is there so it’s not very I
think the best way to answer your
question Jerome is firstly how long has
The Academy been around for for and how
often are they showing up if that makes
sense because fair play to all the guys
that are doings and and on the side and
everything but what’s their availability
and how long have they been going for
I’ve seen a lot happen and then they
they’ve fallen through you know yeah my
friends had one that failed well that’s
what I’m saying so how often are they
there how consistent are they and what
are they delivering to the kids you know
not this is this is aart from from your
bastes and all of them cuz they’re
that’s a different kettle of fish right
but I’m talking about that are not
connected with clubs or vice versa
there’s a lot that pop up one-on On’s
all of this stuff and you know what and
and I don’t think it’s good for the kids
when because for instance you know how
many kids said I’m River Plate when they
were younger yeah they weren’t River
Plate I literally am sitting next to two
of the [ __ ] five people that went
yeah and none of you cont said I’m River
Plate
actually went yeah you signed up for the
program in Noble or whatever it was but
you weren’t you were not River Plate
that’s not an riverplate academy this is
funny bro so I was actually at a I was
sitting not at a dinner I was at dinner
by myself yeah that’s cool sitting on
Chapel
Street and behind me out of all the
places in Melbourne they could have been
sitting behind me was a big Soccer
Academy having a meeting I don’t know
two of the directors and some person
from overse from yeah and it was one of
the ones that’s named as a big Club in
Europe and they’re talking and Academy
is that we’re talking about yeah and I
can hear them literally saying oh yeah
we use the name as branding and like
they’re talking about strategic they say
it well that but basically that we use
the name as branding that’s how we
charge higher prices blah blah blah God
they had no idea and I’m liter I am
sitting
next to them out of all the places in M
sitting next to them in the restaurant
but in saying that it’s like it’s the
same an experience for the kids it’s an
amazing going to
say if these overseas trips right people
say and I would be one of them that
would say okay you might go on these
over trips there’s not that high of a
chance of anyone actually seeing you
you’re not probably going to train with
the legit team you’re going to Pro train
with a like some subsidi of the of the
team or whatever right not not the
actual under 10 or actual under 12s of
Chelsea I was going to make a joke but I
can’t yeah
right but in saying that it’s like if
you’re using that trip that overseas
trip as a kid or for your kid to get the
experience of like they feel like they
see this world of football in Europe and
they they’re training with Chelsea even
though they’re not actually training
with the Chelsea but they feel like they
are that’s an awesome experience I
disagree so and I would also never Deb
on have a debate this is a good question
to ask parents that have then sent their
kids and if they would do it again let’s
just say years down the track cuz it
would be an interesting topic because it
is a a big amount of money that they do
pay for these trips so was it worth it
or and most of the time like for example
rash rash and I when we went we went for
3 months right most of these trips are
10 to 14 days yeah but yours is
different you got chosen I know I know
but what I’m saying is two weeks of
football that you’re probably going to
play six games at Max you know they’re
not going to be training every day
especially the ages that they’re going
um can I push back okay
tell I want to push back on rash just
just for Devil’s Advocate sake right
because I can’t lie when it’s not de’s
Devil’s Advocate you said I disagree
yeah I’m the devil so you are ask no I’m
literally the devil
in that [ __ ] room over there of me
I’m religious now okay what okay awesome
bro um wonder why
um I’m the devil and I’m about to give
you the
advocate okay if I was that age I’d be
like [ __ ] yeah I get to go to let’s use
uh Man City I get to go to Man City I
get to play against their under 15s uh
which is just some random kids from
Manchester that they’ve just plucked out
put on a city
kit it’s a mad experience I know so many
one of my friends did it you know they
got to watch Manchester City live so
they they give tickets to like you know
a a Champions League game or a Prem game
or a cup game or whatever they got to
see the facilities it’s great for them
the one thing that is going to sound
like a party pooper here but I don’t
care it’s false hope I think no so
okay some in some ways yes right but you
could say that this is what I realized
with any kind of football development
any anywhere
anywhere you are you could consider it
false hope because we know statistically
that it’s
.1% of the of the kids that you’re
training of the kids that you’re paying
attention to of the kids that you’re
taking money of are going to be
successful you know for a fact
99.9% of them are not going to be
successful right but does that mean that
then the service you’re providing them
is not valuable okay that’s their main
goal but also they they’re getting
experience they’re getting life life
they’re developing as a person they um
they’re building friendships they’re
they’re enjoying themselves they’re
having fun they feel like a a part of
I’m not talking aboutmy I’m talking
about even that bro that’s is that not
one of the best going overseas that’s
one of the best experiences you ever
have in your life you can never have it
again sick it’s sick I wish I I wish I
was even good enough to be in somewhere
where they would consider taking you
there it is sick but a lot of the kids
would come back and be like oh yeah I
was on trial at City yeah that’s that’s
fine whatever they say but I it’s I
think as long as the person that’s
communicating to the parent is being is
being honest and saying look the chance
of your kid getting picked up from this
trip is so unbelievably low that that is
that should not be the reason that
you’re sending them you should be
sending them for for an experience
experence yeah it’s an and that’s what
it should be branded as an experience
not as well you’re going to go to Europe
see if you can make it and some may do
that I don’t know all of them but I I
would assume that some of them do do
that in an honest way yeah cuz bro so
many I know don’t even play State League
now and they went on those troops it’s
like yeah you know but again I’m just
being a bit push backy just for argument
sake but yeah back to the which like
like the the best Academy in Sydney
let’s say let’s not include ourselves in
it but the best Academy in Sydney
everyone in the football world knows
which one it is but it’s not
your big Club Europe once it’s not
attached to a big Club no no and
everyone in the soccer Community would
know okay answer me straight out though
are there cies out there that are
scams I know it’s a bit of what your
it’s hard because everyone’s got their
own everyone’s got their own training
methods I’ll put it like this you I’ll
put it like this put it like this are
therey out there that are charging too
much for what they
provide and also
uh I guess yeah maybe you’re thinking
where the [ __ ] is the money going all
right here I’ll give you the answer
right I got back when I was at River I
was 17 yeah and I was on the edge of of
of being in you know the main stuff got
back and I got offered to do one of ones
I got offered my one-on ones to get paid
for okay so someone said gav you’re back
here for a month I want you to train
with this guy I’ll pay for the one and
ones right my dad never in his life
would pay for a oneon-one I didn’t even
know what a one-on one at that stage was
you know right so I go whatever man like
you’re going to pay for it I’ll I’ll do
it I start training and obviously at
this time I’ve just came back from River
right so I’m used to proper trainings
proper coaches and everything this guy
was like apparently played in Europe he
was a goalkeeper in Europe and was
training me whatever um here in
Melbourne in
brighten and I’m doing the Session 1
hour sessions and the whole time all I
did was like little ladder work little
jump
little 10 touches on the left 10 touches
on the right I could have done this by
myself right and at that time this is
probably 10 years ago maybe he was
charging 80 bucks an hour to do he he
had probably three cones and two and two
hurdles right that’s what he had me
training with and I turned to my dad
after the session I go Dad I’m so happy
you’re not paying for this because this
is terrible you got finesse right and I
go like I could just tell you to do this
like me and my dad when he was at in in
Argentina with me my dad would train me
I’d be like Dad set up this this is what
I want to do my dad played footy so I’d
be like Dad go stand 50 m away kick it
as hard as you can to me I’ll control it
and I’ll play back to you you know like
there’s so many drills that you can do
by yourself that you don’t need to do
fast feet you don’t need to be jumping
over a hurdle and stabil like landing on
one foot and kicking it you know with
your with your la like to charge what 80
bucks with four cones are you serious
you know and this is why this is why I
get angry is because even at npl level
right you’ve come to my sessions to now
with the kids I’ll have four-year-old
kids and I’ll have goal set up I’ll have
the Nets I’ll have everything because
that’s how I would want to get coached
if I’m there if a CO if a Coach is
putting out three cones for me and
wanting to charge me $80 oh [ __ ] I’d be
like Dad what the hell am I here for I
think it’s about the experience you give
kids as well to make them feel like it
is like especially for me when I’m doing
the sessions I’m trying to make it fun
I’m trying to make it enjoyable I want
the kid to get out and be like today’s
going to be a sick sesh like the goals
are set up everything’s set up it’s
nicely presented you know what I mean
man it’s an interesting discussion that
I’ve recently have had with some close
friends and like I I know what you’re
saying but from my side is I
I really struggle I think I told you
this like two I want to do it for
free I would in an Ideal World I would
be able to provide the service to help
kids learn for free in in an Ideal World
I would do everything for everyone for
free shout out shout out I think it’s
Fitzroy
Lions it’s a free football it’s the only
free football club in Australia shout
out that’s awesome right and and that’s
not cuz I’m I’m a nice guy or something
but like it it actually feels
uncomfortable for me yeah to ask I don’t
know why maybe it’s like a some
self-esteem thing or something but it
feels uncomfortable for me to ask for M
but then it’s like at the end of the day
your time is worth something and
especially if you have had certain
experience in your life and you’ve
trained to a certain level then more
people are going to want your time and
so the only way you can you can’t
provide that time to everyone right and
that’s the same for every every service
right so like a going back to the
the the big big Club thing the the
European clubs that come here but like
they can’t accept everyone to do that’s
what I mean the coaches that are doing
those sessions obviously probably know
what they get what they what they’re
charging but they’re not getting
anywhere near that do the kids get um
trials to get into it or is it just
first in best dress first in best I
think it’s just first in best dressed
and they would have a high price because
they know that they will get that what
the prices what are the prices rough
I think it’s like bucks man 1500 for
like 3 days 3 hours are you Fu kidding
me yeah um for 3 Days 1,500 for 3 Days
pretty sure yeah yeah yeah between a
grand and
1500 yeah you guys are getting
absolutely roted I’m sorry
1,500 yeah man I could get my kid how
many one-onone sessions with that rather
than running around with 80 kids saying
okay guys I’ve got it an accent I must
be Andrea P cousin but that is that is
that is one thing that Australian people
need to to understand is just cuz
someone’s from another country does not
mean they know anything
about from a sporting football country
everyone that um doesn’t NE and a lot of
them do because obviously it’s a
football in but a lot of them don’t also
just look at Tik Tok comments well how
good is it how good is it like now that
we’re doing foot volley um how we’re
getting all different you know types of
nationalities and we’ve got this new boy
come in um and he’s just just come like
two weeks from Rio you love this KT I
love this guy bro he’s like two weeks
he’s like yeah I’m from Rio I’m like you
play football no no just football I’ve
never seen someone so good BN yeah it’s
almost like so you’re saying the
opposite of what I’ve the opposite but
like of them he’s just like just a
cruiser know like he’s just some beach
guy like yeah I play footb what does
that have to do with what I said
nothing
[ __ ] but then we have the other bra
where’s Archie get this guy some media
training you know what I mean all right
look we’ve gone in circles I got what I
wanted out of that though cuz uh that’s
a good one I always wanted to talk about
you know you have mates and that have
arguments and the parents paid this and
then he took this and then they never
got a refund and they took him overseas
and some [ __ ] happened I’ll tell you who
it is off here you’ll know exactly still
active the [ __ ] I just want to say also
this is when I’m when I’m saying this
stuff I promise I’m not trying to get
people to come to my Academy or or his
Academy to be honest I don’t want to be
bad mouthing I just want to tell him the
honest truth it did not come off that
way at all at all I’m just I brought it
up because as a youngster who sort of
sucked I was decent but I sucked in the
grand scheme of things I never went to
anything I never did no oneon-one I
never did no Academy stuff none of that
because I I felt from the start I’m like
this isn’t authent like even as a
16-year-old I knew like this isn’t AC
Milan well I think the perfect example
of what you’re trying to get to Jerome
is if there’s no like trial or like
selected players and all that then
automatically red flag yeah you know
that’s why I was shattered over the Vic
trials cuz I knew it was legit I was
like what I didn’t even make the second
round [ __ ] I suck yeah exactly how about
I went to football Superstar and I
didn’t even make and I didn’t even make
it past the first round wait wait stop
stop everyone just shut the [ __ ] up for
a sec this is awesome football Superstar
bring it back is the best show in
Australian history we need it again
let’s do it and rush just told me we’ll
be the host no and rash just told me
that you didn’t get past the first round
of football Superstar so think about
first round how many like how many kids
are Charing this was just one cohort
group of let’s 150 people there okay
where was it this that Monas uni and
Clayton I believe and I’m pretty sure an
came down that day as well like these
suck and they did they did this uh this
technical these technical tests that
were very rep replicable is that the
word reptitive no like they could do the
exact same tests here and then in Sydney
and it the exact test everywhere and
they were just getting these different
metrics and raing off stats and that’s
how you got to the through to the second
round obviously trying to weed out the
the terrible players technical players
right and I’m not that great technically
right so we’re doing stuff like I don’t
know what whatever it was certain
juggles then run the ball up to this
area Sprint from here Sprint to here
dribble through in this way dribble
through in this way play this long ball
and they’re getting all the numbers jump
Sprint R all this stuff right and they I
think they brought that 150 down to like
30 or something and that was just one
group this was like there would have
been thousands and thousands and
thousands of kids and I didn’t even make
it past that you got kids in there that
just like freestyles that juggle really
good that that went in ahead of me see
this is crazy and I guess you know I
guess probably no no 12 or how old were
you when you did
this 14 maybe that’s too young for
football Superstar
oh yeah football Superstar May old 17 18
yeah yeah can I just say though I reckon
can I just say 16 the guy who one of the
guys Luke Pilkington who won barely made
any uh appearances for victory barely
and then Steven talovich I think had a
few games for Gold Coast yeah I played
with topper so it’s like and then rash
had more games than all of them combined
in the a league so isn’t funny I
remember I remember when it just got
released one of my good mates that I
played with good mates that I played
with was neighbors with this guy from
super uh what’s it called football
Superstar yeah and I was like oh I was
so excited luk n this guy I can’t
remember his name he was actually a
decent player played him footall years
later um it was just this small like
South American guy I forgot his name he
was good though man like techie nice on
the ball um I could find out I could
find out bro that show was like my big
brother like
like Fox8 I think it was like a
Wednesday night sitting down and waiting
to see who’s going to get eliminated and
they all and they’ve all got like Muzz
Cuts like they’ve all got fringes and
like they were in a house man they were
in a house highlight on that bro I’ve
looked it’s impossible to find really
you can’t I I can barely even find like
the DVD like they’re trying to pretend
it didn’t happen seriously it was the
greatest show ever as a youngster it’s
like these guys are fighting it out for
an a league contract yeah like don’t
they have something like that now in
England going on yeah they go H and
stuff just in Rising Ballers is just
like they just find like Young Guns from
around the country they’re doing it now
in the npl in
juniors uh what’s it called seen
football there’s a team called FV or
something it’s called like football
development or something and it’s like
just purely for upand cominging talent
yeah I like that that’s good do you guys
remember uh
Nike oh yeah what’s it called no what’s
it called it’s not the challenge
not Nike FC I know what you’re talking
about nesto won that bro Tom won Nike
yeah no nesto in New Zealand so the guy
that I played with in Argentina I
thought he won the New Zealand no no he
won the New Zealand one and he knew Tom
because obviously Nike FC wasn’t it
wasn’t that it no Nike FC is I remember
that Nike Nike Nike Academy maybe Nik n
Nike FC’s the
clothes what’s it called I I’ll get it
up now I’ll typ I’ll type in Nike Tom
rage oh that’s where Ric was from he won
that’s right Nike football Academy he
won the global
competition bro player though yeah what
a player yeah well even anesta anesta
was a bower New Zealand the one oh the
chance the chance it was called Nike
football the chance Tom roic won it and
what a show that’s what we need to do
with foot volley and then take him to
Brazil so they can get
taking a go co I get [ __ ] slaughtered
don’t even need to go to Brazil but yeah
Nike the chance football
Superstar um I love shows like that even
though you know some of it was probably
scripted it was still cool for young
kids to bro it was intense it was
intense now it’s like what what are they
have [ __ ] Tik Tok [ __ ] Tik Tok maths
yeah they got
maths top baller shout out top baller my
guys man they’re killing it I don’t know
if you guys have seen but basically age
about a year ago these guys in the UK
started this thing called top baller and
basically it’s just one-on ones oh I’ve
seen a few of see we need to do this
sort of stuff doesn’t he
already he does not a Qui story got a
quick story it’s not going to be this is
good we really should do something like
this Ser in needs to think up this
better be the best [ __ ] story all
right listen so when I was in arge right
we used to have all these boys from the
from the slums and the coaches would let
them play footall on the side and in the
slums you play for money okay so all the
boys would go okay I need to make a
quick few pesos obviously if he’s under
15 under 16 Planet River baller they all
want him to play and the coaches would
let them do that right where here when
you play for your cities and your
victories they don’t want them training
elsewhere or doing private sessions or
anything which I find so crazy because
you learn competition in those games
because you’re playing for money right
and then I don’t know if you know this
story but um hopefully I word it right
when River was playing bcka during Co
right in Argentina they do penalty
shootouts for money so this guy was the
the goalkeeper for the under 18s at the
time um and the second keeper the third
keeper and the reserves keeper of river
ended up getting Co
so they had to get him to play against B
juniors in like a libertadores or the
league right must have been libertadores
or cop Argentina or something because it
ends up going to penalties ghost River
Boer the biggest game you can play in
goes to penalty he would have been like
17 18 at the time he’s in goals saves
the penalty they win the game and
there’s a photo of him playing in his
bario in in the slums playing for money
to save penalties and he saves it in the
I I I don’t know if I would encourage so
basically what top baller do encourage
it no if they’re under 16 they win a PS5
if they’re over 16 I believe it’s £1,000
which is a lot of money so they started
that and they inspired Sunday 3 p p.m.
to do it and we did three of them we did
three of them and our first one we
actually gave away $1,000 which was way
too much um we operated at a loss let’s
put it that way um
um but the now they have a deal with
Adidas Predators so all every single one
of their contestants wears
Predators sponsored by Adidas and they
did want they flew to France they flew
to
Barcelona Portugal they flew to Portugal
and too bad out
ofan and
um uh
Dandy they came to Dandy
no there’s a lot of
see that’s what we should
do done it he still doesn’t get it we
should do foot Jerome does this
already we want sponsorships Chuck the
money in and we’re giving it away okay
to come to the next one when’s the next
one well we we haven’t been active for a
while so I’ll play I’ll play bro yeah we
had get arch for every guest that comes
on this show every player you know
what’s funny do you know what’s funny
all you npl players is cuz they’re not
allowed to train I don’t give a [ __ ]
yeah yeah but they can go on the weekend
can
they yeah yeah you can all do that and
go on end of season trips and whatever
the [ __ ] but you can’t play a little bit
of one-on-one [ __ ] off I I see I see de
bruyne and [ __ ] doing videos oh no he’s
not allowed to you’re
npl I bro I literally watch Phil foden
de bruy Harland they’ve done challenges
but you on alloud that’s what we’re
gonna do fck out
here sued sued and booted just went from
M to ma huh the rating on YouTube listen
you said you wanted this for the
street I’m not tiptoeing around [ __ ] we
all know what happens let’s not [ __ ]
play dumb here we all know Dino
dakovich in Singapore no he’s back lucky
there’s no doping in the Le yeah lucky
well imagine aada came into the npl
there’d be no npl oh my God that’d be
waa even just walking in here the
monitors are
going the sniffer dogs would be having a
field day like there must be something
in every player’s gym
bag interesting um we’re joking guys
none of that’s real I think we’ll get on
to um oh we just got a question from the
crowd oh yeah there’s a live audience in
here today ladies and gentl how we got
to that how cool would that be all right
rash yeah one-on-one with the keep in a
game oh this is the PK humble question
uh this is a good one right maybe I’ve
heard it on Tik Tok already who’s PK 100
oh my god I’ve actually you know what
gav’s like gav’s like a guy that spent
10 years in jail and he’s just trying to
reintegrate into
society yeah jail
tats you know when boozy came home oh I
need to moisturize my no will know that
but it’s like you got to teach him like
yeah no we got this thing called Wi-Fi
now yeah the hell is PK 100 I I supposed
to know that his name is PK humble he’s
from filthy fellas I know who he is yeah
right and they had Mr Andy Cole on the
show United Striker
Legend um and the question was
one-on-one with the keeper in the game
who’s got the advantage and what’s the
ratio is it like 80 to 20 to the stri or
like 50 to 50 what do you reckon it is
regardless of who the player and keeper
is or I would say a
forward uh player has the advantage
maybe yeah what do you think it is
obviously it depends on the player but I
think it’s 7 730 I think it’s 7030 7030
but obviously then you got players like
like Messi yeah BR 99 to one not against
Peter check then you’ve got um Raheem
Sterling
zero against anyone against a disabled
goalkeeper
come on come on he’s had a hard week
guys you’s been Chelsea’s been hurting
him this week which is why I would never
I would never bring up a player to say
they’re bad but we just needed to see
the emotions it evokes from 350,000 a
week you’re not’s let’s be let’s be real
here that bro footballers robbing Rob in
those countries earn so much money yeah
but in saying that the
best n many people know what I’m
speaking about here but there’s
something English crowds English
atmosphere is not the best in the world
but to me it’s my favorite and why I say
that is when a goal goes in in
England especially in a decent
Stadium [ __ ] yeah yeah limbs overseas
I don’t know how I feel about it like I
was I watch in other countries what do
you mean no they go crazy but it’s not
limbs man what do you mean limbs so you
the arms going out limbs is Li okay
sorry bro a throw it’s all right it’s
all right yeah that’s
that’s all right limbs is when a goal
goes in and you all you see his limbs so
like someone’s leg in the air someone’s
arm there someone’s [ __ ] limbs right
England does it the best and England’s
the only country and Australia where
they say yeah cuz in other countries
they say oh
go oh don’t for me goal is so much
better than yeah n yeah is better go
yeah like yeah like I don’t know that
for me I was watching another bro I was
watching I think it was a c or something
debate massive game it was a massive
game and they had just a club had just
scored a winner or something and people
were like yes goal what about in is that
they were saying yes go yes but they
were like go they were like that in
France it would be we yeah well yeah in
France it be
we I don’t think they do they definitely
don’t what do they do in the Arabic
countries Arabic countries what is it no
throw money no no they
they throw money throw gallons of oil on
the field no they do the commentating is
funny in those countries what is it yeah
I’m trying to think of what it is now
it’s just anyway they don’t say gold
gold gold gold gold they say Allah
that would be
sick everyone tune anyone’s Spanish they
say gold gold gold go go go gold let’s
do all three together on each different
ones so what’s the first one Spanish
gold gold so we all at the same kind
go I don’t know what he’s talking about
what he talking about but let’s get a
poll on what do we prefer yes go all
right yeah or we Allah
Allah I don’t know if the crowd the
crowd doesn’t say Allah Allah Allah
Allah it’s the
commentators cuz that would be weird if
the crowd did that maybe they do it have
you been to a game no but bro there was
one chant what about in Asia what would
they do there don’t what Thailand it’s
all
right we can’t uh what do they do can’t
remember what are they doing bro when I
was in Malaysia yeah what was they doing
in South Korea when I was in kind of
remember when I was in bro South Korean
girls in football are the loud like East
Asian girls are the loudest really in
football in football bro what are you
talking
about you
know know I’ll tell you can I tell you
you watching some weird [ __ ] at 3:00
a.m. on YouTube no so that’s definitely
I’ll tell you how I know this
right when I went to watch Tottenham
play they have a player an Asian player
he’s named son okay yungman
son bro he would do the simplest
pass
yeah really that World Cup or Women’s
World Cup or whatever watch them if
they’re like Japanese South Korean or
like East Asian they’re loud for the
simplest thing and then when I went to
Malaysia to watch
Chelsea I will never forget I was where
I was in the players tunnel where they
were coming out right and this was like
we were guns back then this is Mourinho
1415 right we had everyone Hazard all
that they were pinching
me because I was in front of them who
were these girls like to try to get
photo photo pinching you yeah like like
pinch that was their to get you no they
didn’t want me why the [ __ ] would they
want me I’m at the front yeah trying to
get past me like pinching me and [ __ ]
and I was going to turn around and pinch
him back pinch him back but I didn’t cuz
I was like they were pinching bro I’m
telling you Asian girls are fanatical
for football fanatical I played in China
and same like little back hill little
pass to the side and they just go off
they love it and and and the signatures
the photos they love
all yes they love signatures
photos um whatever just getting close a
few photos with that when I was in China
they wanted a photo put it up there yeah
did they even know who you were yeah
let’s bring pinching back I don’t know
yeah instead of talking just pinch
someone if you want them to do something
for you don’t ever if you pinch me I
will literally make sure you have two
ACR ticklish yes bad tickles man you
know what
yeah this is the best football pot in
the country someone told me that they’re
um you know how they uh what do they
call um when you have a weird sexual
fantasy yeah fetish fetish um this was a
guy that his is tickling really wait he
tickles someone or he someone tickles
him what’s your Dr well I don’t think we
can say on here but have you ever heard
of that before my fair is is girls who
like the prim no yeah that’s a thing
tickling is a thing I didn’t know that
defitely a category on SES I’ve been
told really he he he has the weirdest
insights is it actually someone told me
someone told me I think it was you what
no no not about the tickling chill I
think we’re talking about
no about how no knows a little bit about
everything am is that we saying I’m sort
of like that that’s why me get along
because we can talk about whatever so
why do you get along with me if I know
nothing
who said we get
along um I think I get along with you
because you’re one of those guys
where like there used to be this kid in
my ear level that was the same as you
where you want to punch the [ __ ] out of
him and then cuddle them straight after
that’s what gav is to me yeah like shut
the [ __ ] up how can I stay mad at this
guy yeah that’s what gav that’s what my
my sister says about her dashound she
says um she wants to punch up say I’ve
never loved something so much but I also
have never I never get more pissed off
at anyone ever in my life now gav
definitely doesn’t piss me off the most
out of everyone but I’m just saying
he’ll say something that’s so irritating
and then I’m just like it’s gav you know
how can you stay mad at gav like what’s
the address yeah like he’s still asking
for the address of the Pod yeah you know
what I mean anyway we’re at 70 minutes I
want to get into one last
thing rash it’s your time to shine
baby we are going to talk about a league
wages who gets what
add-ons first year second year Marquee
all of that I’m just going to let you do
your thing so I’ll do my best here to
give you guys a rundown of a lot of
people have been asking me what are the
average a league wages what do people
earn in the a league so I’m going to
give you a a bit of a rundown a bit of a
caveat is obviously its averages and its
approximations because all the clubs are
different it depends on the player it
depends on how well the player’s playing
it depends on their pedigree how much
money the club has
everything but the averages that I have
been told so we currently have a three
uh sorry we have we currently have a
$2.6 million salary cap which means
between the 20 to 23 players in the team
the club is allowed to spend a maximum
of 2.6 million on their wages on their
wages now within that they currently
have two players that they can pay as
designated players that are paid outside
the salary cap and not included in that
2.6 million who would they normally
Rush um I won’t go into players names I
mean like are they Mar so no so two
designated players which can be paid
between 400,000 and
600,000 right that’s the two designated
players then you have two Marquee
players that are also paid outside the
salary cap that can be paid whatever you
want nice so you could pay them $10
million if you want obviously no one
pays any players that but they pay them
probably let’s say 600,000 and
above for a player coming into the a
league the first season you have
scholarship contracts and all that kind
of stuff which are a little bit lower
but in general we say 50 to $80,000 per
year Australian dollars for your first
contract for your second contract if
you’re let’s say still not a starter but
now you’ve played a few games you’re in
around the squads but it’s your second
contract you’re at 90,000 to
150,000 right so it’s yes you’re you’re
you’re a little bit more experienced now
but you’re not a big player you’re not a
starter
yet then we have starter that is not a
big player again I don’t want to give
examples cuz I don’t know exact I know
few exact um salaries but I don’t want
to give the exact salaries but a starter
but not a big player we got one60 to
$240,000 per year not bad and then if we
have a a starter and a bigger player so
someone that’s more established um been
playing for many years they’re still in
that cap though yeah they’re still in
the cap though that’s
250,000
plus again going back to some clubs
don’t even have mares so you got the big
clubs Melbourne Victory Melbourne City
uh Weston Sydney Sydney FC which would
probably I don’t know exactly all of
them but most of them would be utilizing
all of the perks in that thing and
probably using all the salary cap and
everything right then you’ve got other
clubs smaller clubs like your Newcastle
your your um Central coasts those kinds
of things that are probably not PL they
don’t they probably don’t have mares
they they’re not utilizing the whole um
all the benefits that that are available
and then you’ve also got clubs that are
somewhat a little bit more mid- tier
maybe Wellington and Perth that
potentially are somewhere in the middle
of those two things so that’s the
rundown guys so their
averages but what do you think cuz um
this is a good topic obviously that
we’re on right now about a league and
obviously npl and obviously let’s just
say parents you know looking at their
players being professional and obviously
you being in the a league yourself
um the npl wages are very up and down um
some might be touching a league first
years maybe I think you were saying I’m
so sorry gav I don’t want to speak about
npl wages okay you know why yeah yeah
yeah all right just remember yeah you
know why I’m not being a prick guys we
have an episode where this is really
this is really going to blow your minds
well okay not about npl then but just to
ask you
Rashid as a parents perspective and
obviously us living in
Australia yeah um yeah let’s just say
the first year contracts for your
scholarships or or first year um you
know you can kind of earn that
money doing whatever you want really
with a full-time job yeah um the first
couple year like the first year let’s
just say y yeah which is like what is it
40 to 60 50 to 80
yeah how when you were in in in it
um or as a parent viewing
it and like players coming from overseas
like let’s just say you’re living in
Argentina that wage is unbelievable
coming from those countries you know oh
yeah but then but
then being in Australia and obviously
the living cost obviously yes you can
live off that um but it is hard for for
a parent let’s just say to go okay I’ve
dedicated 10 15 20 years of you know
supporting my child for them to get that
money knowing they could do a job on the
side um yeah
okay I’m trying to or um so I’ll answer
right well actually yeah it’s probably
worth noting these are all gross figures
by the way so you’re getting taxed on
all that money um
so
damn but I would say the financial
incentive if we’re talk talking about
forget the kid’s dream just the
financial incentive is that you’re not
you’re hoping that the kid doesn’t just
play one year you’re hoping that they
get a second year then they become a
regular starter and then they’re up
they’re on 250300 for a few years that’s
pretty good that’s good money that’s I
don’t know not many careers would be
getting 300 Grand per year yeah you’d
have to work pretty hard to get that
right um then on top of that you always
have the possibility that you could go
to Asia or Europe and I would say like
for example me I saved more money in two
years in Korea in the K League than I
did in six in the a league yeah so that
would be where that would be where you
and that’s two years and that like a lot
of players then go to places like M that
was K League might go you could go
Malaysia you could go Vietnam you could
there’s so many other countries that
you’re going to get more money than here
yeah then on top of that you also have
you come out of your career you can now
do coaching or you have an expertise
that you can leverage off now let’s say
you started an academy or you do
coaching and you can you it’s it’s
almost like you’ve done a PhD in
football so i’ say there is some
long-term benefits but at the same time
it’s not guaranteed and it’s a sacrifice
because maybe maybe you do only get one
contract and then you’re finish and
you’re behind the eight ball yeah when
than than all your mates that went to
UNI can I ask you were going to Korea as
someone with a a-league resume so you
had a bit of a like a like a background
to you I guess but what about the
general Korean bloke who just played in
the K League were you making more than
him uh the General Korean bloke yes but
then some Korean players would earn real
good
money football in Korea is a rich kids
sport so most of the kids that like I’m
talking coming in amgs and stuff first
year contract yeah I’ve got but but not
from they’re not they’re not driving the
AMG from from their football money
they’re dve because their family has
money like it’s a it’s an expensive yeah
so it says here and again they’re all it
just all varies it like no one actually
has the exact numbers you can’t it’s
impossible uh this is in pounds um so
apparently the J League you can make
$127,000 a year
average MLS 135,000 a year average
Scottish Premiership
$182,000 a year
average
um it has the a here £65,000
which works out to be around about 100
110 sounds about right um just giving
some leagues at the a league is I
compared to sometimes I guess uh you got
the Austrian League
177,000 a year uh the Greek League
145,000 a
year um and there’s no it’s crazy cuz
the other Asian countries aren’t in here
but you would assume that besides a j
League you would make more in Korea you
would make more in China you would make
more in you’re talking about yeah yeah
yeah you would even all those other
Vietnam Vietnam
Malaysia Thailand India yes Thailand
yeah man if you’re coming as a if you’re
there as a international oh yeah but I
mean you know who’s a Winger oh I don’t
know then no I don’t know but then you
Al also yeah you got to also like gab
said you got to factor in the cost of
living in Australia is very high this
tax is very high um you have the
factoring there’s no there’s no
uh uh what’s it called win B there’s no
bonuses or some players do have them now
but for in the general when I was
playing no one really had bonuses hold
on can I ask massive massively different
to the rest of the world did you have
any add-ons or anything in your contract
nothing so it was basic we’re paying you
20 bucks a week um you get that’s it no
go bonus no clean sheet bonus I don’t
know whether it would have been worth
putting a gold bonus yeah I mean
maybe I’m not a strike like no I did no
there there wasn’t which
is I I don’t know I don’t want to speak
for other people but as far as I know
it’s not that common it’s not that
common to have like the like it is the
rest of the world to have all these
different stipulations in your contract
that change your the money you get in
the there was no clean sheet no minutes
played no
appearances no no no so it was one
sentence your contract yeah it was like
P document that I could not understand
we are paying you this much a week
thanks and then one line that said
that’s the amount that you’re getting
yeah damn yeah got we got another
question from the crowd coming in and I
think we can
wrap um but again I’ll go back to before
we
end clubs like the the smaller clubs
often are not paying above 300K
apparently per year so even their best
player their biggest player their
biggest wage is is not even hitting the
the maybe not the biggest player but one
of the big players in a bigger Club yeah
and a lot of players also like when you
do go overseas I don’t know if you had
this rash but like they set you up with
accommodation um oh [ __ ] that’s I I
forgot to mention that part yeah that’s
a massive reason of why I saved way more
in Korea was cuz I had I didn’t have to
pay for anything yeah we did say living
expenses but didn’t have to pay like
they paid everything car apartment
WiFi and you’d be so surprised before we
got here gav didn’t know that how to get
Wi-Fi yeah like a lot of boys well
that’s crazy right because my experience
is like playing overseas that’s already
always set up for you so your contract
is living expenses everything paid for
in Portugal yeah so your rent and
everything’s done didn’t didn’t the a
league have a deal with h day that
players would get free
cars some players got them some players
got them the biger players and then um
then you get like a travel allow not a
travel allowance you get a relocation
allowance which I think is don’t quote
me on this but I think it’s 5,000 maybe
or 10,000 did you ever get anything
freebi freebies I got a hat once you got
a hat okay from some guy cool um in the
crowd [ __ ] this is tragic you didn’t get
a you know from major sponsors or
anything did you have a boot de forgets
I used to get Nikes for a period for
free
yep I can’t oh I’m going to forget
things now but I definitely got a hat
from some kid off Instagram once that’s
awesome and see kids look what you can
get if you become a pro footballer in
this country that’s the financial
incentive for thees Roi to
put yeah but that I reckon just
accommodation uh in Portugal you had
like a certain amount of restaurants
that you could go to which I thought was
sick I thought sick yeah cuz let’s just
say you live like uh you’re playing for
Noble Park FC right you got Nando for
free you’ve got bro well that’s the
thing man I genuinely think I spend 80%
of my weekly allowance wage on food do
in Korea pretty much everything was food
was done in Argentina it was breakfast
lunch always go to the club have
breakfast after training have lunch at
the club
CIA so I mean you got fed of Victory
obviously is that obvious like pregame
meals stuff no what no bro wait wait
wait wait they just bring you some
Jaffer cakes in the chain hold on stop
and some snakes pregame so this might
sound so stupid of me I feel stupid and
I never feel stupid see this is what I
mean so many people think more
realistically let me ask this question I
watch a lot of you know behind the
scenes football like there’s great one
now on Netflix called treble winners
where it gives you the best look at um
city in the year that they won the
treble behind the scenes so you guys
never ate
together we at one point fuing for real
on at one point we started getting meals
I can’t remember when we would get the
meals in the after training but that was
we were paying for it wait okay this is
a Tik Tok and set up by set up I think I
think uh one of the players set it up
like organized it with the club and I’ve
had I think I’ve had three clubs
and every week normally it’s like
traditional in the npl that like every
Wednesday you have food at the club
which I think is great you know it’s a
great tradition that they have um and
then some might be like 10 bucks ahead
and that might be like your fine money
or the money that you put into the food
okay let’s just break this down yeah
okay in the a league when you were
playing for Melbourne victory yeah you
weren’t eating together as teams like
the club didn’t provide you food no so
you know how you know you’ll see in
England or whatever at training they’ll
go in and there’s breakfast and they eat
breakfast and then they go
train you have your breakfast at home
and then you come in you know what we
did have we did I think we had an
espresso we had an es espresso machine
that’s nice of them we had that so at
least you can make a cup of tea and a
bigy
y um we would have lollies provided on
game day so like under eights like us
and
oranges and um what else did we have
yeah like I said we had a few Banas few
bananas bananas provided on game day am
I tripping because one time I was in the
tunnel one time I was in the tunnel when
I was doing stretcher work for Ceda
right like we we were the stretcher
bearers on the pit I would not want you
carrying me off right I was praying that
no one got injured I’m like I’m not
going to be able to carry these [ __ ]
90 kilo men like God like you know but
anyway when I I had a peek in there and
there was um there was a little bit of
catering like sandwiches and
stuff your what was your best food after
game yes we would have sandwiches uh
little wraps most of the time some clubs
getting like pizzas and stuff did that
ever happen uh sometimes yeah pizzas if
we went also if we traveled if we played
away then in the hotel everything was
provided eat in the restaurant e
everyone eats together pregame after
everything so rash in in Melbourne no I
would think obviously npl to a league is
very different you know but I would
think at a league level after every
training there should be lunch for the
boys you would yeah you’d hope so there
was in England or like first TI football
I’m pretty sure that’s like a a thing
100% you know well I my best pregame
thing was uh uh this club used to do
Gatorades chewing gum didn’t mind in the
warm up bananas mle bars that’s [ __ ]
what pre so all snacks snacks yes you
have snacks you have snacks but also
like going back to the money thing we
have to remember that most of the clubs
are running at a loss here W again quite
I don’t know I’m not looking at your
freaking your um your finances but I
would say the finances of most of the
clubs in the league would not not um
maybe maybe I’m the stupid one for
assuming that like I know there’s going
to be some [ __ ] a league nerds in the
comments saying bro thought they got
mules yeah it’s a professional football
league most others do so what I just ass
that’s why I’m shocked well even stuff
like um obviously we had access to syes
um
nutritionist as in had access to but it
wasn’t part of the program that’s like
oh yeah every player comes in you have a
dietician you get a personalized plan
for how you eat do you know any players
that had a personal chef oh not a
personal chef probably not a personal
chef just like whoever’s at home but
even a personal personalized dietitian
like dieti Diet now we know as old as
we’re older this like how important it
is to energy output Rehabilitation
everything and we didn’t have that we
didn’t have that we might have had a
nutritionist that you had okay comes in
once
every now and then does a presentation
for us and you can call her if you want
to but there was no like okay this is
our club
dietician you need to get a personalized
plan and she’s going to help you with
your meals like there was none of that
see that’s there’s so many I think one
percenters that could be done better
that as players you want but just aren’t
provided and just like swept under well
so listen to this right well I was
trying to lower my body fat percentage
for a period at my victory and you asked
for hi he abused me about this course I
would finish training and instead of you
know eating a lighter meal or small
getting smaller portions I would just
eat a tunic can for my lunch as a pro
footballer as a pro footballer and I was
thinking this is and I couldn’t work out
why my skinfolds like why do I not have
any energy why am I so sore no idea and
F’s got like a 20 pack and he’s like bro
this is wrong and he was at the time
he’s like bro what are you this is not
what this is not the right thing to do
like trust me man I know it is you said
trust me I want mercury
poisoning
so last point before we wrap I say that
because like on the food thing because
you I hear the same story from every
single English national team player when
they had Capello he
refused
anything with the slightest bit of sugar
in it so no ketchup was the biggest
thing because the Brits love their
ketchup they put it on eggs they put it
on [ __ ] anything rice they put it on
everything he said no ketchup I think
there was there was no butter so toast
had to be plain yeah so Us in Portugal
always the
same uh pasta olive oil only no butter
no nothing chicken and then uh no onions
just Tomatoes they wouldn’t let you have
onions before the game that’s a pregame
that’s giv me bubble guts com to stink
but so Victory weren’t like oh you can’t
eat this you can’t eat that or was it up
to the player was up to you because
you’re going home and eating then then
you eating at home and the other thing
was rash I got a question cuz I don’t
know this if you’re playing at home for
victory are they making you stay at home
or do you have like concent where you
have to go in no you stay at home St
really and Away Away obviously you’re at
the hotel at the hotel well how about
this in the C so so when’s your
curfew curfew I’m at own bro no no no
I’m talking about away games did they
have curfew n you do your own thing
you’re in your own room which I think it
should be I don’t think you like it’s
grown men you shouldn’t be going you
need to be in bed by dinner all together
dinner all together yeah yeah dinner all
together at the hotel yeah yeah and I
think everyone’s professional enough to
like not go out the night before games
and stuff like that do you have anything
like any any things where because again
Capello would refuse to allow his
players to be in
slides yeah it wasn’t like so apparently
one Ross Barkley walked down he’s in
slides and the play like bro get the
[ __ ] upstairs before he saww recently
yeah I saw that recently were you were
they strict on what you had to wear and
stuff like going to dinners and and all
that I feel like that’s just player
conduct I don’t think you would be yeah
probably not slides I think you’d be
expected to be in runners in your
Victory gear or in your in your Club
gear um trying to think in the a league
weather I had that definitely in Korea
yeah Korea would have been in the a
league
like even us at npl we no one would come
on slides PR you’d all be decked out you
know yeah take even players like in
preas you were in pongyang weren’t
you what’s that it’s all right even in
like even in like preseason Boys in like
npl level are like getting angry if
we’re not decked out in like your gear
or the club hasn’t given it to you yet
it just doesn’t give that professional
environment I’m sorry Pyongyang is North
Korea
R isn’t wearing slides there God damn oh
[ __ ] but um CU Kim John I think he owned
you shout out to Inon was it shout out
to Inon man was it Inon yeah yeah but
well I told the story on Tik Tok not too
long ago about in the K League how we
had a coach come in that was like you
can’t obviously if you’re late to like
all the fines list changed oh if you’re
late to training 1,000 uh sorry 10,000
if you’re walking with your phone Us
dolls bro if you’re walking with your
phone if you’re looking at your phone
while you’re walking $2,000 fine they
see you walking with your phone cuz
apparently it’s dangerous uh $5,000 fine
if you’re seen outside your house after
1 p.m. this is during the week buying
you like KGB looking like secret spies
like yeah so we had players snitch on
each other no well I don’t know we said
we’re not signing that I don’t agree to
it it’s
ridiculous all of that he did all of
that how about this back to the Kay
League just on food pregame meals you
would go into the pregame room before
you go to a
game and chips fried chicken tomato
sauce and the boys would be chucking it
on their plates eating it and I’m I’m
there with my oats I brought my oats in
a little container from my house and and
and these are eating chips with ketchup
on it and fried chicken
yeah normal Korean and then run like
machines oh so when you said that I
thought it was like a go on I dare used
to touch it n bro no one they would ask
me what the coaches would say rash why
are you eating your weird meal like eat
why are you eating your slop so you’re
telling me that you couldn’t be on your
phone while you were walking but you
were allowed to have fried chicken and
chips before a game y I’m playing in
Korea Brandon Brandon O’Neal said to me
once what obviously he was at um he’d be
broke I’d be Pro in ker he was at uh oh
which club was he Brandon O’Neal I don’t
know I only like thing um he he was he
was in Korea while I was there in the K
league and he said to me he he describes
Korea as for them the sky is green you
know just like everything is different
the way they see the world everything
that like and I love Korea and I love
everything to do with it but it’s so
different just what the things that we
take as standard normal oh that’s what
that is is the opposite what’s an
example like that exactly what you just
said sky is actually Green in South
Korea no the thing of he thinks the sky
is actually green no the [ __ ] no the
thing of you
saying you can’t walk with your phone oh
yeah but you can eat fried chicken and
chips before games yeah I think that’s
the beauty of football and and traveling
and learning different cultures good
point good point you know it’s like what
Ronaldo that famous ad what’s it go how
does it go come on Jerome you got this
more than just oil it’s liquid
engineering you’ve got this in the
locker I play many places cold places
that’s what it was that’s it hot places
C places that’s the one yeah cast going
do the whole thing I don’t [ __ ] know
the whole thing we’re going to do a
episode on football ads there’s there’s
oh just drop one each quick best one uh
my favorite one yeah
um pretty simple it’s probably either
the um Nike uh cage uh the cage one
right give more description um where
they’re on like a boat or something and
it’s like a cage it’s three on three oh
yeah my faor teron re and he does the
back heal and then it kills Bonito and
it goes yeah that’s Jer Bonito I don’t
know the one I like this one when you’re
young you don’t think about it you just
play Eric can just because you like like
it
yeah what about what about what about
the um when um the Brazilians are in the
change room yeah that’s
Jo the best yeah that one now Brazil
sucks the highest The Heist was good the
airport bring him back the airport was
sick what about the Bro with the Ronaldo
at the start he’s putting the vapor on
in the chain with gold VAP and he goes
yeah and ibra with ibra and then ibra
does a chest on o That’s Jer Bonito this
is all joer Bonito I know different ads
they um what happened what what was that
ah bro sorry my favorite one is Nike
first person where the guy starts at
like Sunday League or whatever and he
keeps going up and then Arsenal offer
him a contract have you seen that one
and it’s all from first person really
you haven’t seen it Santiago munz a good
San and Gavin Harris hey you know what’s
funny I’m actually Gavin Harris all the
footballers hate goal they think it’s
the worst movie ever no way I love it I
got to rewatch it within within context
it’s like Harry Potter if you watch
Harry Potter now [ __ ] but if you watch
goal when you’re a 10-year-old child and
you don’t know anything about movies and
anything no but someone this is the best
he’s the best player ever first of all
you wanted to be Santiago mun I
literally got spider f50s because of him
you know what’s funny I think either
someone at Newcastle or someone on the
set said he was the worst footballer
ever he looks like it like why wouldn’t
they go get someone that can kick a ball
that’s yeah that’s
true you can’t find a Latin actor that
can kick a ball like how hard could that
be there’s millions of people to choose
from like gav Harris was a better player
Gavin Harris was better than Santiago
mun what about this
one hey Glenn do you remember that game
against
full my dad my dad he saw me play man he
saw me play he saw
me I started crying
yeah first of all let’s [ __ ] it we’re
here I’ll pay all
double let’s break that
down he goes from
playing Sunday
League cardboard shin pads Sunday League
barely on grass in La straight to
Newcastle United who the [ __ ] was his
agent he’s he’s the guy from riverplate
it’s the same story bro really he bro he
did really he goes really like I’m being
serious Fu the [ __ ] this is where I want
to punch you what is he what do you mean
really Glenn is the agent and then the
best bit of footballing tactic uh
tactical awareness or whatever was when
he
goes I want you to chase the ball and he
picks up the ball and he kicks and he
goes the ball moves faster than that’s
whatever the ball moves faster than you
can
and just everything about goal 3 was
horrible don’t even go there goal three
was that when he goes to real no it’s
when he goes to the World Cup and they
get knocked down in the quarters Haven
seen that watching someone get knocked
out in the [ __ ] quarters goal two was
actually good because they had Like
Beckham Zan all that and it was mad
right and then he gets caught up in a
real Madrid Scandal that sounds about
right yeah yeah that sounds about right
cheating on his misses whatever yeah
Beckham whatever no we haven’t all been
there um what you never played at Madrid
and cheated on your misses I don’t know
what do you mean with all being
there he just cheated not at
Madrid uh but yeah the first one
remember I even had a
misses we’ve spoken about his
girlfriends on this show we literally
took it out anyway remember in the first
goal where the first training session he
has and he gets [ __ ] cleaned up by
that fake Joey Barton and then he’s
having the shower like and he’s resting
his head in the yeah y so funny he gets
he gets his Asma puffer
crushed they just had to add in that he
had Asma didn’t they how about did you
see this thing about the liver 60% of
the Liverpool players have been uh were
were diagnosed diagnosed with
asthma
um which means that then they can take
vental and really which gives you some
kind of physical I’m not sure yes yes

crazy oh bro it was an incredible it is
still my favorite movie just imagine
trying to make a movie and getting Becks
on scene yeah they got all of them
wasn’t f in it M Gavin Harris was a
better player just cuz he was getting
old whatever he was still a se he had
better tickers than Santiago
mun and we do ad for suited and
booted back wasn’t Santiago mun’s whole
career based off Mel Owen Newcastle
Madrid or was it the other way she no I
wasn’t Alan Shear he didn’t go to Madrid

want to be on the pitch when he’s
playing it’s hard to see whether he’s a
good player or not in the npl he doesn’t
touch the
ball I watch 90-minute games I see him
touch the ball two
times and it’s at his shoulder and he’s
trying to football it go did you see

Roberto Carlos Pepsi ad 2002 & one of the older Aleague promos can't remember which year, but the song is by the presets , are just a couple classic football ads that come to mind
Great video but for best ads probably the switch with Ronaldo or winner stays on
Best ad is Pele and his erection problems 🍆
Love this podcast fellas ❤
