our species this week is closely related
to the rora does not have a swim bladder
and can be found hanging out with sharks
and turtles that’s right Bri it’s also
great on the grill but you know what
we’re talking about kobas this week here
on the Florida Insider fisher report
which starts now
[Music]
welcome to the Florida Insider Fishing
Report presented by
[Music]
Yamaha welcome to the Florida Insider
Fishing Report we’re your hosts Captain
Rick Murphy and Bri Gabrielle talking
all things kobia this week along with
some guests and our friends from Yamaha
in the studio you’re absolutely right
Bri so Bri let’s talk a little bit about
kobas you know the cool part about theob
is that he’s so diverse in the way he
makes a living some these dudes they
want to get on structure they’re very
structure oriented Pat and I were
actually talking about this this weekend
and then there’s some that like to swim
in real shallow water in his region they
like to get on the beach and then
there’s also the fish that follow whale
sharks and they follow Mana rays and
that’s what’s so great about this show
is that depending on the region we can
customize exactly how you should go
fishing this weekend yes they have to
keep swimming and depending on the time
time is very important too but you know
what we’re going to get to all that
before we get to our kobia reports let’s
say hi to Dave frell at the CCA
workbench with a gaggle of kobia
catching tricks for us today I’m sure hi
Dave yeah I like to catch those Kobe I
grew up up there in the Panhandle too my
parents live there in Freeport so some
of my earliest fishing was out there
chasing Kobe up and down the beach and
boy it’s it’s so much fun to sight cast
those fish in that real clear shallow
water it just it’s just amazing so
hopefully we’ll get to do some of that
tonight show you what we’re doing sounds
good to me it sounds like he’s got a
bunch of tips for us we’re starting in
the real Legends Central east region
talking with Captain Jim Ross about this
Houdini coobo fish what’s going on up
there
Jim well you know the kobia are one of
those Mysteries of the ocean briis you
never know where they’re going to show
up in the springtime uh it all depends
on water temperature it depends on the
bait uh location and in our case a lot
of times it does depend on where are the
manta ray and so in the real legend
Central east region most of the time we
are looking for race and Anglers are
eagerly anticipating that Springtime
Cobia run when somebody starts seeing
rays but these Fish can be there one day
and then absolutely disappear the next
especially you know when you get cold
fronts coming through and it kind of
hits hits that reset button you don’t
know where they’re going to show back up
most of the time we’re following those
Rays though in the 20 to 60t depths uh
whenever the water rises above 68° and
that usually happens right around the
second week of March off the Space Coast
but like I say cold fronts can be our
worst enemy they sh the deck every
single time they come they come blowing
through and so the pattern changes and
then afterwards you may find them back
out on the wrecks again in 60 to 90 ft
of water or sometimes even deeper or
they may be off Sebastian one day and
then the next day they’re off Canaveral
and the next day off their ponts and
then the next day you get a cold front
and they’re back down at Sebastian again
it’s you just never know there’s just
constantly things shuffling the deck
anyway to catch them you need some
brightly colored Jigs and Dave’s going
to talk a bunch about those but one of
my favorite is the emis Sha that
assassin makes I catch a lot of Cobia on
that reel on that uh on that thing and
the the real colors that I like are one
Rick’s holding those bright chartreusis
those bright pinks anything that’s
bright and gets their attention and they
can see from a long way off because they
don’t seem to be to lure shy most of the
time now also live baits like pogies
cokers Pils or eels seem to work pretty
good when you can’t get them to bite on
those artificials now our offshore
species this week we’re going to talk a
little bit about the dolphin because
it’s not red hot but we’ve got some
quality fish moving through right now
and Captain Greg W on the sea leveler
sport fishing at of Port canaval that’s
sea
level.com he’s telling me that his
charter boats have been trolling out
there in the deeper edges 180 to 250 F
feet of water on this side of the Gulf
Stream and catching a couple of nice
dolphin he say in the springtime though
a lot of times the wind is the
determining factor and you want to find
where the clean water and the dirty
water are swirling together because
that’s where the bait fish seem to be
best right now and so on that clean
water side of that uh you know of that
break that’s where you want to find them
the other place you can run to is on the
other side of the golf stream the guys
that are getting over there to the east
side are doing really well on some big
dolphin right now most of the time we’re
trolling small to medium siiz skirted
balyo at four to six knots that’ll
generally put a dolphin or two in the
Box for you and I’ve got a photo here uh
that Captain Nathan of the sea leveler
Fleet on the sea Sun’s boat caught just
the other day so there’s some good ones
showing up out there let’s go in Shore
bu
inore the sheep head bite right now out
of Pon is still continuing to be pretty
good P Canaveral still got a little bit
of a bite but Pon is the place to be and
you want to Target these fish with
fiddler crabs small shrimp or live or
frozen sand FAS on a jig head or a small
sliding Sinker rig most of the black
drum right now are running about 2 to 8
lbs there are a couple of bigger ones
that are mixed in with them and the
pompo were also mixed in with them so
you might get a you know a nice mixed
bag of fish there but right now now
those sheep hat action is still pretty
good and here I’ve got a nice little
picture of one that we actually pulled
out from under a mangrove the other day
nice what else you got this species is
red fish Rick and you know red fish are
Universal all around the state you can
find good red fishing and we’ve got some
great red fishing going on right now
guys and gals when you’re fishing in the
real Legends region if you’re fishing
below the NASA Causeway focus on the
mangrove shorelines all the way down to
Vero cut baits are working best north of
there there especially in the mosquito
Lagoon side now it’s time to get out
your sight Cas and lures because these
fish are up Shallow they’re tailing a
little bit they’re making wakes they’re
cruising around the shorelines and that
saltwater assassin 4in little p&v Dart
or their 5-in Vapor Shad rigged weedless
is working really good right now key in
on where you find the mullet and you’re
going to find these little war parties
of 6 8 10 fish hanging around those
mullet pods and you’ll find individual
fish sliding from pothole to pole hole
up and down those shorelines in the
mosquito Lagoon and then I’ve got a nice
little picture here of another fish that
we put in the boat the other day along
one of those
shorelines well Jim smile Jim thank you
so much for starting us off tonight with
the theme species Cobia we’re going to
go and take a look at the radam Marine
system hotspots thanks bud we’ll talk to
you later in Shore the black drum near
the area Bridges and inside of hover
Canal use cut crab live shrimp for fish
up to 35 lb and then offshore the Sharks
along the beaches big black tip Spinners
and fine two sharks are striking chunks
of bait and 20 to 40 foot depth look for
the areas where the bait pods are
present to hold the best numbers of
these fish Bree all right let’s head
into the se- sucker Panhandle region
with Captain Pat Denine where we heard
you had some fun this past weekend with
Mr Rick Murphy I tell you what Rick or
Bri we did have fun fishing with Rick up
here and also along the Kobe there
extremely popular game Fish up in the
panh and for years Anglers have eagerly
anticipated their arrival in March as
they begin their migration however you
know I hate to say it the number of
migrating fish along the beaches seems
to be no doesn’t seem to be they are way
down from historical and we really
haven’t had a good spring season in
years but divers do report seeing
increased numbers on the reefs and the
reck during spring Springtime so maybe
they simply aren’t swimming the beaches
so I mean there are a lot of kobia up
here
you know the resident Kobe are being
caught regularly during the summertime
you know while fishing the reef and the
wrecks and if you have been C on the
beaches this year they swim West so I’m
not
do there is a need to take care of our
fish up in our area but I am willing to
bet that most are now being caught on
live bait while fishing for amberjacks
or they may just pop up at the surface
near the boat while bottom Vision I mean
they’re pretty curious they off hang
around Turtles Rays Bull and Tire sharks
and most of the Cobia being caught
nowadays are the smaller fish 30 and 40
lb so uh I hate to say it but it’s
certainly not historical there is a
picture of Captain Chuck boner out of
Des he regularly puts his folks on nice
catches and on this day last week they
found a kobia caught a nice mess of
Vermillion Snapper and that fish was a
swimmer so they are still migrating all
right staying offshore and speaking
about the Mingo they continue to be a
primary focus for botom Fishman and big
big ones are being caught Captain Chris
Kirby on the backlash he had a rack this
week of jumbo siiz bull Mingo they
resembled red Stampers you had to look
at them twice to see if they were
actually mangoes they were big fat mango
Snappers these bigger fish are coming
from deeper natural and artificial
structure in 180 plus feet of water you
want to use a two-hook chicken rig
baited with cut squid herrings or maybe
a Boston mackerel near shore the mingle
fishing is good but the deeper ones are
deeper spots are definitely holding the
bigger bullfish bull bul Eng um moving
inshore we did have a lot of fun this
week Bri fishing with Rick we were doing
some red fishing and there’s some great
red fishing going on right now in the
pan house it’s a good time of the year
for Sight fishing both in the gulf and
in The Bays uh Murphy and I we fished
this past weekend along the beaches of
of oako Island and west of Fort Walton
Beach we sight fish these big bulls any
empty section of the beach is a good
place to live for them like Lake uh Fort
pickings point in Pensacola crooked
Island and Shell Island in Panama City
and also the state park beaches at Cape
s blast basically anywhere where you
don’t have a lot of traffic it’s a great
great place to find these red fish
they’re generally going to be right up
on that first Sandbar Rick and I
couldn’t get a sniff with jigs or even
live shrimp surprisingly enough but once
we switch to that top water bait that
you know they turned on they did really
well in Santa Rosa sound we fish the
shallows along Gul Island National
Seashore where the Jigs and live shrimps
were the tickets the top water wasn’t
the way to go so basically rotate it
find what works there’s a photo of a
nice red fish Captain Rick s fishing
this down at big S and then moving
inshore everyone loves the pompo and
right now is a great time to love them
as they’re being caught in great numbers
along the the fanan beach is ideally
were where you going to find some cold
clean water up on the beach and also
look for areas with trough and channels
through the first bar that’s gener where
you’re going to find those pompo use a
SLE rake to catch some fresh bait double
dip by putting a small piece of fish
bites in orange or pink on your on your
hook and it also pays to have a ride
where get the pomp pompo jig in case you
know you got a surprise attack of a
school of fish coming along down the
beach the beaches at Henderson and
topsell state parks as well as the
beaches just east of the Des and pass on
holiday aisle are great places to get
your pompo fixed the pompo are running
up to and maybe over three pounds right
now but the water’s cleaning up and it’s
definitely warming up so the beaches are
turning on all right Pat thanks for
informing us about what’s happening in
the sea sucker Panhandle region we’re
going to go and take a look at the hot
spots Pat says that the
big uh the pompo in the Gulf beaches on
the east side of Destin using sand fleas
and fish bites look for clean water and
wash outs in The Sandbar and then
offshore big bull Vermilion Snappers on
Cut baits fished on the Rex and natural
bottom and 180 to 250 ft of water it
sounds like you had a blast up there
went from plan a to plan D and z and I
love the fans we have so many great fans
there and we got to meet some of them at
lunch and dinner it was awesome it was
awesome awesome that’s awesome well
speaking about plan a b c and d we have
the fish bites Trading Post Rigs and
techniques at the CCA workbench with
Dave frell who probably has some kobia
catch and tips for us and if one doesn’t
work
that Kobe’s always welcome behind my
boat any day and they sometimes come to
see me and uh they don’t go home come on
come on by one way ticket to dinner huh
baby exactly then we’ve got our Captain
Tommy daringer in the front runner boats
Northeast region who’s chasing down
those cobes for us so stay tuned and
we’ll be right
back the Florida Insider Fishing Report

Chrome Fishbites Trading Post the first

daquiri deck food drinks
friends well Dave Dave we’re here at the
CCA workbench and it’s time for the fish
bites Trading Post Rigs and techniques
so Dave Let’s Just Jump Right In how are
we going to catch a Kobe in Florida Dave
well you know it’s always a good idea to
have a spinning rod handy on the boat or
just all the time no matter what you’re
doing if I’m trolling or whatever I
always have a spinning rod handy and and
that’s mainly to catch that Cobia or the
dolphin or whatever that com swimming up
to the boat when I’m bottom fishing or
we stop you know to get bait or
something and whoop here comes the K
Cobia or here comes the dolphin and the
kobia is a very curious fish you hear a
lot of these guys talking about how
they’ll Orient around a big uh object in
the water like a big bull shark or a big
turtle whale sharks are notorious to
having a ton of kobia on them the Mana
Rays where I live at Cape Canaveral they
always usually hold a couple of big
cobas so anytime you see those kind of
things if you whip out a good spinning
rod a good stout spinning rod outfit
like this one you got in your hand this
this is a spin Fisher 7 pin uh reel uh
what’ you load it up with that’s got
that’s got 40 lb braid on it and uh it’s
also got a a a 50 lb prospec
fluorocarbon leader so you know with it
connected with an FNG knot somewhere
right here right here yeah so you know
that’s going to cast really well through
the guides that knot and it’s going to
be able to pull just about anything uh
out of the water that you hook into you
know 40 lb 50 lb you should you know we
catch blue Marlins on that kind of gear
quite often so you know you let me ask
you this do you think the curly tails on
jigs is a plus or a hindrance no it’s a
it’s a great thing um they like eels and
and and Squid and that pretty much is
like a a squid and an eel together when
you put a nice curly tail jig on there
and that fish bites you know it also has
that scent in it so they get close
enough to it to put their nose on it
then they’re going to want to Chow on it
and that’s that you know nice tro proov
jig it’s and once they get that jig in
their mouth you know it gets into the
corner and that gets all the way down to
that uh Prov and it’s hard for them to
shake it really is but they you know
like we were saying that that they love
eels and we got you know Savage gear has
just come out with a really good uh
artificial eel which you know sometimes
it’s hard to get live eels and the
artificial eels before this one really
didn’t move very well well they were
made out of a stiffer kind of plastic um
they just didn’t seem to move like a
real eel would and this this one really
does it when you move that through the
water that that tail just looks like a
ribbon back there and it and that’s how
an eel swims you know like with that
ribbon like motion and you know it’s got
a really nice uh hook on the top and a
big treble hook on the bottom and it’s
got a good weight to it so you can throw
it a way and that’s a lot a lot of times
that’s what you need it comes at an 8
and a 12 in I would probably uh throw
the 12 in first to a big fish but um you
know when you see those Cobia and making
that long cast uh with whatever jig
you’re using we got a bunch of them up
here you don’t want to hit them in the
head with it you want the you want the
Cobia to find The Jig not The Jig to hit
the kobia in the head you know you want
to throw it two or three feet or maybe 3
to four feet 5et even out in front of
him so that he can see it hit the water
way out in front of him and then follow
it down right and then you’ll feel him
when he picks it up that’s the ideal way
to to get them and now I’ve in the past
get excited and uh we you kabang them
with a big live mullet yeah well that
but with jigs too you know i’ I’ve hit
them with I’ve I’ve dropped a big jig on
their head quite a few times but but you
what you Pat Denine tell you the story
no bu this is the 20th year of the kobia
show you’ve always tell me about hitting
them with the
mullet Captain Donnie Brown called me
the mullet killer because of that
because yeah 20 years I me every year we
got to get about the mullet I love it
yeah but you know you can also like Pat
was saying we catch a lot of Kobe and
when we’re bottom fishing because they
are bottom fish and uh so you can catch
them on a chicken rig with chunks of
squid sardines all the same stuff that
we Target red snapper and and and
grouper with live baits live pin fish
we’ll a lot of times catch aob on the
bottom and uh so you know every time
that you go bottom fishing in a in a
place where there’s a lot of good
structure you have a good chance of
catching a Cobia and when you Gaff him
10 15 seconds tell me put him in the Box
immediately don’t mess around with the
Cobia because he always seems to save up
a lot of energy for when he gets hit
with that Gaff and he goes crazy and if
you you know if if you dally then you
will suffer the consequences you and
your boat you will get beaten if you do
not get that in the Box will get DED
exactly or something like that I don’t
know put him in the put him in the Box
all right well in life and in the front
runner boats Northeast region timing of
course is everything so Captain Tommy
tell us where we’re going this
weekend that’s right Bri we’re
definitely going kobia fishing I’ve been
beat up by some kobas before those
things are mean so Dave is
going to keep them Dilly yeah what yeah
something like that something like that
but
anyways our Beach season typically kicks
off right around this time of year and
we timed it just right here in the front
runner boats Northeast region because
the fish are here right now they’re
starting to show up in good numbers you
know once the water temperature on the
beach gets into those high 60s it’s time
to start looking for the migrating Manor
Rays like Dave was talking about now
it’s a sight fishing game out there and
you’re going to find those Rays
hopefully with a few Co
on their backs anywhere from just behind
where the waves are breaking to maybe a
mile or so off the beach now the go-to
Kure for a long time has been that
Bucktail jig with or without that grub
tail like Dave and Rick were just
holding uh but in recent years you know
I’ve had some great success having my
clients toss that fish bites brawler
jerk bait in that white knuckle color
you know that also makes a really great
Tarpon lure if you happen to see a
tarpon swim by you know pair that with a
half ounce Maybe a 1 o jig head you can
toss it a mile it’s going to come in
handy when you’re trying to sight fish
those cobas off the back of the Rays now
last couple of Seasons I’ve seen quite a
few Anglers they mistakenly hook the
wings of the manor Rays when they’re
trying to catch a Cobia and that kind of
ruins the party because then you don’t
end up catching the fish and one way you
can avoid that is by using a cork with
about 2 feet of leader underneath it you
know a big shrimp a poy or a finger
mullet I know Dave something about a
finger mullet there they all work well
under a cork and it’s going to keep your
Bay above the ray just enough to get the
Kobe’s attention and not hook the ray
great way to go now we also get kobia on
the Nearshore and offshore wrecks but
you know the beach fishing where all the
excitement is kicking in but one fun way
to get the kobia fired up over some of
those wrecks is to Chum them up I like
to uh net a bunch of pogies along the
beach and then live Chum over those
wrecks and hopefully you’ll get those
Kobe’s attention and have them come up
to the surface and then you could pitch
a bait or a jig to them and I’ve got a
picture here this is my buddy Andy
Martinez with a fat really nice Kobe
that he sight fish this week along the
beach right between Flagler uh Beach and
Pon Inlet so those fish are starting to
move their way to the north with this
warmer air and water temperatures we
have happening now also offshore guys
the Mahi they’re showing up in better
numbers offshore this week you know look
for the typical stuff the bird the bait
the weed lines any kind of debris you
you can start just inside the ledge and
work your way out or even a little
inside that and most of the fish are
coming from the usual trolling of Valley
who skirted or naked now just make sure
you have some small to mediumsized
Spinners ready in case you get into a
school of fish you know a good buddy of
mine found some floating debris this
week east of St Augustine he caught over
a dozen I think he said he caught almost
20 fish under this uh piece of dock that
he found floating out there by tossing
some small paddle tails to those Mahi so
be prepared if you see out there now
moving
inshore the trout the trout bite has
been picking up this week especially for
those bigger fish that we get this time
of year my clients they’ve caught some
big fish on that Berkeley jwalker top
water plug at first light on that higher
tide that we have going on know we’ve
just been uh casting parallel to the
grass lines looking for those grass
lines that are holding good numbers of
finger moldt there’s a ton of bait that
have shown up over the last week or two
weeks I guess and just find those areas
and toss that plug now the smaller
schoolie trout they’re around as well
and they’ve been hanging out along the
edges of the icw around Creek Mouse and
run outs on that outgoing tide a
saltwater assassin paddle tail or a live
shrimp or a minnow under a cork those
have been working well for those
schoolie fish now another option is to
get a big live finger mullet and either
freeline it or use a fishfinder rig and
fish it in those same areas um that I
was talking about earlier with the top
water and wait for those big trout to
come on by and pick it up now speaking
of big trout I’ve got another picture
here Captain Rob Bennett from Coastal
fish.net he sent me this picture of his
client Mary with a huge old Gator trout
that she caught this week one of those
big freeline live mullet how about that
big old thing beautiful fish man way to
go girl go Mary all right all right so
guys the red fish man that bite red fish
bite has been great this week there’s a
bunch of big fish in the back country
creeks and flats on the lower tide stage
those red fish have been getting super
shallow I’ve seen some really cool
things this week they’ve been backing
tailing doing all kinds of crazy stuff
right in the backs of those Creeks on
that low tide now some of those fish
they’ve been a little tough to catch
because they’re spooky hadn’t been a
whole lot of wind um which makes them
even spookier but if you can present
something light with minimal Splash
you’ve got a good chance to get hooked
up I like that Elite Shiner paddle tail
from saltwater assassin rig that on a
weedless hook you can even go weightless
think I don’t know I can’t tell that one
Rick’s holding but just like that it’s a
great great way to catch those skinny
water fish you can land it softly and
slide it right into that red fish’s
strike zone now if you’re stalking those
if stalking those super skinny fish
isn’t your thing the deeper water red
fish have also been chewing and we’ve
been catching around docks and also
along the edges of the icw but the
Seeker bait for those fish for me this
week has been blue crab chunks anytime I
found those red fish and they didn’t
want to bite something else we’ve got
them to eat that crab um so I’ve got one
last picture here and this is Mark and
his two sons Marco and Leo with a nice
slot red they caught with me this week
using a piece of that cut crab aka the
Krabby Patty works almost every time if
you can find some crab I love it got a
Leo on your boat it’s my it’s my kind of
thing and he’s smiling with a fish it’s
perf that’s right you like that name
don’t you thanks Tommy you did a great
job this week we’re going to go and take
a look at the strike zone uh hot spots
from the Northeast region Shore top
water red fish and trout along the grass
lines find the flat that’s holding some
finger mullet and toss the Berkeley
jwalker parallel to the grass lines and
then offshore the cobos along the beach
throughout the entire region tried live
eels or bright colored jigs tipped with
the fish bites curly tail what you think
well what I think I think Anglers
catching a Cobia this summer could win
you a 250 HP Yamaha in the CCA Florida
star competition presented by Yamaha
with their new format more species and
bigger prizes you have your shot at
winning a share of $500,000 in prizes
and scholarships the competition begins
Memorial Day weekend and you can win
boat motor and trailer packages tackle
Electronics kayaks and so much more
registration is only $80 and includes a
one-year membership in CCA if you are
going fishing this summer you need to be
in the CCA Florida star competition so
go to ccfl star.com to get registered
but coming up we’re seeing what’s on the

so cool about it is all the neat
features and what I love about that is
they’re all trickling down so what
you’ll see is how Lucy will describe it
the best watch all right let’s take a
look hey guys as you can see I’m here at
the boat show and with me from Yamaha is
Lucy Berg she’s a product specialist and
Lucy we’re introducing a new big 450 why
don’t you tell everybody about it hey
Rick yeah we are excited about our 450
we have more horsepower it’s breathing
better now we also added some
convenience es to this motor to give our
voters more confidence when they’re on
the wers they have to think less about
controlling a boat and more time having
fun one of those things we’ve added is
the total tilt feature which you might
remember from the 4.2 L that’s the
double tap of the up button right the
motor comes up by itself double tap down
and the motor comes down till it makes
trim round contact so what about this
steering steering is integrated steering
is plug andplay Works automatically with
helmm ex and the customer doesn’t have
to think about it immediate response to
the joystick when you introduced the 425
the one feature that everybody loved is
how well it went in Reverse is this
motor same thing same robust uh lower
unit with that thrust enhancing reverse
exhaust system so it’s basic physics we
rerouting the water above the anti-
ventilation plate so that the propeller
under 2500 rpm is getting clean water so
it’s a more efficient reversed grab you
know on a lot of our big center consoles
we’ve got lots of toys that take a lot
of electricity what about the charging
system on this mod right so this has
that award-winning phase angle control
charging system it gives us 96 net amps
at idle so that is stackable as well so
every motor will add 96 uh amps and
that’s net at idle so that’s all that
power is available for the fishing and
entertainment equipment at idol nice so
one other thing we got it looks like
what is this on the back of the CER good
eye this is a safety feature this is our
prop light that indicates that the prop
is spinning during our set point
features and this is now an option on
the rear panel of our xco this gives our
customers the option between that or
drilling holes on the transom for that
same Fe safety feature so guys if you
have any questions about any Yamaha
outboard you can simply go to your local
dealer or what website do you want them
to go to Lucy you go to Yamaha outboards
docomo
guys you were right about those features
I know they’re all pretty cool she makes
my life so easy she’s so thorough on
knowing the product yes very
knowledgeable for sure good going Lucy
all right in the Discover Crystal River
Northwest region you’re looking for
kobia all over the place so let’s see
where Captain Jeff Hagman has us going
hi hag how you doing kobia this time of
year can be found on the flats but most
of them right now are transitioning
offshore off the reefs and wrecks so
look for fish cruising around the
beaches around the passes Channel
markers the cans in the shipping
channel uh in the winter months you can
look for them around the power plants is
a great place to find them the warm R
are runoffs you can you can actually get
on the Becca The Stingrays come in there
to feed the kobia follow them and
they’ll kick up baap fish and shrimp and
stuff so the KOB will be on their backs
and you can sight cast those fish up in
that shallow water around the runoffs as
far as baits go a 10in uh black eel or a
moss back and pearl rigged on a 3/4
ounce jig head Works to 1 half oun jig
head works really good uh um also a
great bait pin fish tail huffed under a
cork can’t go wrong with that and they
have a hard time refusing it also if
you’re sight fishing them a tail hook
jumbo shrimp on the flat on a jig head
or on just a hook is a really good bait
for
them daying offshore Captain Rob
Davenport a big nasty Charters out of St
Keith reports the Wahu bite right now is
going good you’ve been catching them
anywhere from 100 to 140 ft of water
he’s highp speeded trolling around reefs
wrecks and hard bottom use wire leader
with diving plugs or weighted lur um
not with uh 20 to 25 pound or 20 to 25
ft excuse me of 150 to 200 lb mono shark
leader waho B when the Wahu bites it’s
really violent so you need some kind of
stretch there especially if you’re using
braid on your reels so that that long
leader will help you get that shock from
that initial bite also trolling thats uh
20 to 30 oun uh weighted
uh in front of your bait is really
really good for Wahoo get your bait down
get it below that little commotion that
your prop wash is kicking up and you’re
doing you know anywhere from 12 to 18
knots sometimes so you’re kicking up a
lot of water so getting those baits
below that is really good make sure you
use the wired ones they will bite those
leads and thinking they’re a bait so if
you use the wired ones you won’t lose
everything from your lead back and I got
a photo here from Nicole van Beren with
an absolute stud above a private boat B
Bird’s private vessel nice that’s a
beautiful Wahoo for our Coast yeah bu
good food there bu let’s go ahead and go
inore moving inshore Captain Mario
Costello T Chargers out of chis rer
reports a good snook F right now around
the rocky shorelines from Crystal River
to Yankee Town he’s throwing a 5 and 1
12 inch glow jerk bait on an 8 ooun jig
hat on the incoming tide using live
select shrimp on the outgoing tide most
of the Snooks right now ranging anywhere
from 30 to 35 in with a few monsters
mixed in moving down the coast a little
bit Captain Jim Pard a big daddy sport
fishing out of Tampa Bay reports his
snook bite’s been going really good and
the fish right now are starting to push
out of the C Creek Mouse lagoons passes
and with the water temperatures really
starting to warm back up uh later in the
morning to afternoon really producing a
good snook by right now live pillur two
o circle hook and 25 lb liter and I got
a photo here of a nice sppy this last
week nice all right one to go what you
got bub we’re going all the way back up
to the other end of my region Captain JB
Charters out of appalachicola reports a
good red fish fite right now around the
marshes and oyster bars and any kind of
structure that you can find up there
using fresh shrimp on a two o circle
hook with about 18in lader top of the
incoming tide and the beginning of the
outgoing tides to be the best bet and
I’ve got a photo here of a nice average
size Apple Atri Cola r
all right hag that’s a you great photos
this week man you br in the girls and
good photos I’m liking it all right
we’re going to go and take a look at the
Oella Key Marina hotpots Jeff says that
the red fish bite on the top of the tide
and look for the schooling fish live
baits have been working really well and
then Spanish mackerel on the Nearshore
reck and the hard bottom look for the
birds and the bait fish use spoons live
baits and Chum bags we’re going to
really work for those dudes all right
well since we’re in between the winter
and early summer Kobe runs in the fish
bites east region where they pop up on
turtles or wrecks at any time Captain
Mike holiday says to stay prepared with
our rod and get ready to cast W how you
guys doing you know you can catch kobia
all year in my region but we seem to get
two big runs of fish we get a Spring Run
in February March and a summer run in
late June and July this year Spring Run
was better than the last five or six
years with a lot of fish caught off
leatherback turtles and off bull sharks
uh in places like the sand pile off
Stewart and along the beaches off
Jupiter Island and there’s also been a
fair number of fish that just kind of
pop up on the wreaths often right when
you pull up um if you’re not ready you
you missed your shot and they’re gone
the key to successful Kobe fishing is
being prepared for the fish you
encounter because a lot of times you
only get one or two casts at them before
they go down so anytime you’re heading
out the inlet you want to have a
spinning rod a chartreuse colored
saltwater assassin emman Shad put that
on a 1 oz jig head or you can have a
chartreuse or an orange feather jig just
something you could turn grab turn
around and throw at fish uh they’ll also
eat about any live bait including shrimp
and crabs and you know whole squid is
pretty much money on them the average K
region is anywhere from 10 to 30 35 lb
but we see them up to about 60 lb I got
a great kobia photo from Captain uh Eric
Davis of Vero Beach he let his angle to
nice Kobe that caught off a stingray on
the beach and that that fish had a shart
Tru jig now the other thing we got going
offshore in the in the past the spring
black fent tuna run has been outstanding
off Southern PM Beach County but this
year we’re seeing good numbers of fish
all the way up into Martin and Southern
St Lucy County the fish are running the
outside edge of the 8 Mile Reef on out
to about 300 ft of water and they’re
also on push button Hill and the the
four Pierce Canyon and then all the way
down through Palm Beach on that Reef
line from like 150 out to 350 black fin
are the most active at you know up on
the surface at dawn and dusk but you can
really get them all day long you canol
small feathers just if you want to cover
a lot of water most of the guys out
there are putting up a kite and power
drifting or just drifting or slow
trolling with live thread fins Pils or
gogg eyes in the middle of the day if
you’re on those atol you can mark them
deep you can drop down a jigging spoon
and get the bite average black fin 15 to
30 lbs and I got a shot from of Tim from
Orlando he sent me this nice St Luc in
black fin he caught that in 140 ft of
water on a live thread fin that’s
awesome let’s go in sure Bud yeah you
know April is a month when the pompo are
starting to migrate back North so we see
some big schools of fish along the
beaches and around the inlets a lot of
those fish are spawning females in that
2 to 4 lb range they tend to hold
tighter to the beach than the winter
fish so you can Target them right in the
trough you really don’t have to reach
way out to that outside Sandbar and for
bait it’s pretty hard to go wrong with
the fish bites easy flee uh or the clam
or crab Fish Bites in those brighter
colors uh sand fleas work pieces of
shrimp clams work um around the inlets
you can throw pompo jigs or spoons with
a strip of fish bites on them I like the
shrimp formula when I do that average
pump 1 to 3 lb got a great uh pompo
catch from Captain richy boys from salty
days Charter they got their limited
pompo fish in the south side of the St
Lucy Inlet with a San F and fish bike
combination now the other inore thing
April and May or when the sea trouts
spawn we catch the largest fish of the
year on the flats of the Indian River uh
in in both St Lucy and Indian River
counties that seems to be where the best
grass is and the bigger trout are the
fish will be up on the flats at first
light they’ll be around the spoil
islands and sandbars as well these next
two months is when you’re likely to get
a fish over eight or nine pounds and
they’re really focused on on finfish
more so than shrimp so sand purch
pinfish mullet pilchards U you want to
start your day throwing big jerk baits
or top water plugs uh a saltwater
assassin Shad a Texas Shad a Dy Dapper
any of those baits in the darker colors
there money on those big fish now you
can also p a live sand perch or piled
under a rattle Cork and you know just be
sure to handle them gently revive them
before you release them so they can
repopulate the river uh I got a great
trout photo from Captain Mark dvoo of
Fort Pierce he sent me a shot of a nice
Gator trout georgeo caught he got that
on a on a dock on a top water plug
that’s awesome bub go ahead let’s talk a
little bit about bass I’m dying to no
yeah you know well water levels are
super low on the CM too Channel akes and
that’s got the vegetation thick and the
lakes really fishing well uh water’s
really clean I was talking to Captain
Steve niller bass online.com he said the
bass fish is on fire right now in all
the open areas of the grass um there’s
Shad balls out in the middle of the lake
with schools of fish on them early and
late in the day and after the rains uh
and the Shiner B producing some big fish
up to he said his big fish this week was
9 lb 13 Oz He said you want to start
your day throwing top water plugs mostly
smaller prop baits or or white spinner
bait work those around the uh Shad
schools or the edges of the grass you
can also work the the shoreline Coes
with a frog bait like a log or toad and
uh as the sun gets up switch over to
shiners or a June bug or green pumpkin
colored bass assassin fat job rig that
wacky style fish it on the drop offs and
around the shell beds to right now it’s
kind of a 15 to 35 fish morning plenty
of 6 to 8 PB fish in the mix thank you
so much Hollywood it’s always good to
see you man I appreciate everything and
we’re going to go ahead and take a look
at the th Marine hotpots from the east
region Mike says that the pompo in the
surf off of South Hutchinson Island
Beaches use sand fleas fish bites easy
fleas a lot of fish are in the first
trough close to the shore and then
offshore scattered dolphin and sailfish
and 120 to 180 ft a water off a Jupiter
slow troll or Drift Live baits to avoid
the grass Bree avoid that grass all
right speaking of fish bites get ready
for the shoreline Showdown Surf Fishing

baby well speaking of Dave he is ready
to show off some T Marine new products
at the CCA workbench so let’s take a
quick peek hard and
soft we got it all all right and after
that our styron Central West Region
Captain Jeff paage is rigged and ready
to go so keep your eyes peeled and we’ll
be right back look at that handsome man
great so Florida Insider Fishing Report
is brought to you by Ala equipment
company where uptime matters a merit
tril load launch relax Abyss battery
power your Pursuit Rodan set it forget
it catch more fish discover Crystal
River Florida bass assassin and
saltwater assassin best lures period and
Maverick Boat Group makers of premium
boat Brands Maverick Hughes Pathfinder
and
Cobia well we’re here at the CCA
workbench and it’s time for the taco
marine new products Dave Dave you don’t
know what to do with all that
recognition that’s right well we’re
going to start off with the Savage gear
this is a Savage gear night I’ll tell
you this is the Savage gear manic shrimp
the RF V2 RTF V2 version two I reckon
it’s modeled after a 3D scan of a real
shrimp and it’s got that
a specifically designed tail to make it
kick you know when you bounce it off the
water or just reel it straight you know
and it’s really you know go ahead and
pull that tail out even though it’s
really thin it’s very very strong it’s
got the durch 12 times tough tpe and
it’s got a nice big weight in the front
of it so you can bounce it or Swim it
comes in six different colors it comes
in a 3in 3 and 1/2 in a 4.25 in and a
lot of different weights from 38 o all
the way up to a qu ounce as well half
ounce 3/4 ounce so you know any type of
uh everything eats a shrimp and they
make enough different type styles and
colors that you can go down there and
get whatever you need they work great
just swimming them or under even even
under a popping cork right which is you
know we would really like to do that so
go to Savage gear.com to get you a manic
shrimp okay and then what if we want to
go Jiggy well then we got the Savage
gear Magnum squish jig squish meaning
fish and Squid it’s a fish on one side
and a squid on the other here that is so
cool yeah a fish on one side and a squid
on the other and uh this designed a you
know vertical jig for all the bottom
fish stays in the strike zone better
because it it kind of moves side to side
versus a butterfly jig you know that
kind of plummets pretty quickly this
thing will go from side to side and uh
you know sideways through the water
column which is you know kind of rare
what you do you just drop it down to the
depth you like give it a jerk up and
down and it’ll go side to side just like
a squid or or you know a a bait fish
it’s got a lot of really nice Hardware
on it that big one there is a a 10 o you
know it’s got three different three
different hooks on it it’s got a big J
hook on one end and then the two assist
hooks on the other uh that come that one
the big one comes in five different
colors and then they got the little
squish one there erratic jig and it
comes in eight colors and four different
sizes 2 and 3/4 o 4 o 5 O up a 5 and 2/3
o for those as
well.com I’m going to tell you I bet you
those fish are going to be confused one
minute they’re getting ready to eat a
fish and the next minute it turns into a
squid yeah you know they’ll probably
like both so you know everything loves a
squid and everything likes to eat those
little fishes so so you want me to take
this one Dave yeah man this is the 3-in
baby Shad from bass assassin so Dave
there’s some people out there in the
business that think that they created
the right Shad or this Shad the 3in shad
and there’s a lot of talk about oh well
we started with that because of the
forward facing sonar yeah a lot of guys
are using that with the Finesse baits
like that so I did a little homework I
went back and I started looking through
some of the bass assassin catalog and
here it is right here right right this
goes back to
1994 he was making that little 3-in shed
so bassassin had been jacking around
trying they’ve already invented it you
know everybody’s copying their stuff and
then they’re trying to take credit for
it and I’m going to tell you these new
colors are off the chain yes we’ve
talked about them earlier you know
really really nice cool uh Shad colors
the deal the pearls and uh the Green
Glass minnow really really cool so where
do we go to get it bass
assassin. all right next we have the uh
Berkeley coal shad and these are you
know power bait Co Shad they have that
power bait formula built inside of them
and it’s called a coal Shad cuz you can
Co up you know if you have a limit of
fish you can catch a bigger one with one
of these uh it takes that shallow a lot
of guys are using that shallow water SW
swimbait and this is you know just steps
it up a little bit they’re really big
runs true at high and medium speeds big
profile it’s got that honeycomb
Construction in the back that allows it
to really move really well which is why
it doesn’t blow out when you move it
fast Plus plus it’s very very strong and
that’s what that honeycomb does want to
take one of these to the Florida Keys
and throw it at the bridges for the
tarpon they will eat it and I bet
holiday could catch a big snook on one
comes 5 in 8 in uh and 2 and 3/4 ounce
weight so where do we go to get it
Berkeley fishing.com nice Dave you
rocked over here see you later it’s some
good stuff lots of options I love it all
right the time for Kobe and the star TR
Central west region is near so let’s get
captain Jeff paage on the line for more
insight what’s going on Paige hey y’all
let’s get this thing started you know in
the staron Central West Region we have a
year round Cobia fishery but for
probably your biggest fish and your best
shot at cruising fish it’s going to be
right now in the spring and then again
in the fall when them water temperatures
are starting to warm up or starting to
cool off and that being said probably
any artificial Reef which we have a lot
of them hard bottom Air Rock piles
wrecks uh they can be in 30 ft of water
they can be in 200 ft of water so that
means if you’re trolling for King Fish
always have a flatline or a Bucktail
ready to throw or if you’re bottom
fishing for grouper Snapper over hard
bottom or rex have another Flatline
because a lot of times Rick as you know
they like to follow species up so it’s
not like you’re always going to get a
sight fishing opportunity but more times
than not when you do you don’t have a
rod ready now there’s one other thing
that’s happened in our region a lot over
the past say four or five years is we’ve
had whale shark sightings and every time
there’s a whale shark sighting it’s
always covered up with kobas and they
usually get to get on them three four
five days in a row Captain Jason stock
had one sighting where he got out there
three days in a row on it every day he
got keeper Kobe is off the whale shark
now I I suggest using at least 20 or 30
lb braid with 40 to 60 lb fluorocarbon
leader 70 circle hook tro car the best
and uh like I said have another rod with
at least a half oun Bucktail jig or a
half oun jig head with a soft plastic
like a gulp shrimp that you can throw at
it if it’s a bright day light color dark
day dark color you taught me that Rick
Murphy long time ago got two kobia picks
tonight first one Captain Dakota Moore
with two happy clients with a pair of
nice kobas and then my second one C
Captain Josh pruner who I call the mayor
of 59th Street boat ramp with a really
nice Brown clown yes sir too bad there
you go tell us what else offshore B red
grouper this will probably be my last
week on him but he has been so steady
and and good big fire trucks have been
caught all throughout these spring
months of February through now and uh
pretty much 110 150 ft of water they can
be on the smallest little rock pile Rick
so pay attention to your bottom machine
folks and live pin fish probably the
best bait but don’t be afraid to have a
couple boxes of sardines cuz once they
start eating they’ll bite just about
anything rolling inore tarpon fishing
your favorite Rick uh warm week we’re
having going into next week won’t be
surprised to see a lot more fish show up
but they’re already in boa Grand Pass
they’re already at the Skyway the only
problem we’ve had is a lot of Southeast
to Southwest winds made the conditions
in the Gulf a little choppy but as soon
as we get these East Winds which we
actually have the next couple days look
for those fish laid up along the beach
I’ve heard right now that they’re
they’re showing up between the Venice uh
fishing pier and stump p and Englewood
on the beach small groups of fish it’s a
good idea to have a live crab or a live
thread finin or a pin fish and if it’s
artificials you like a fly is probably
your best bet especially if you set up
on the sandb bars just outside the
inlets now nighttime fishing around
Longboat Pass Bridge and new Pass Bridge
have been real good with live silver
mullet and live ladyfish also in the
mouth of the Manatee River guys have
been doing good and also Matt Lea pass
down south got a photo tonight of a
happy young angler with a nice staring
he caught down in Charlotte Harbor with
Captain Brock corner on his 25
Pathfinder hybrid and my last species
snook with the water temperatures
warming up most of the fish have exited
the canals and back bays and estuaries
and they’re out on the flats big high
tides look for them up around the oyster
bars and also out along the beaches
there’s lots of bait everywhere Rick
thread fins pilchards silver mullet and
lots of pinfish all over the flats so
you choose your bait you’re going to
catch your Snook if you like throwing
top water plugs it’s tough to beat that
big jwalker 120 in the Chrome or the
bone pattern and my last photo tonight
is a big old snook with a happy client
holding on to it caught by Captain
Griffin deans of slot machine charger
all right thank you so much Paige it’s
time for the Dair deck hotpots from the
Central West Region Captain Paige says
that in Shore the tarpon groups of
Tarpon are actually beginning to show up
in boa Grand Pass as well as along the
beaches between Venice and the fishing
pier and Stump Pass live crab with
thread fins going to work best for them
and then offshore the kingfish has
finally fired off the water temperatures
in the mid 70s already so they won’t be
around Long holding on the structure
around the big schools of thread fins
anywhere from 1 to 7 Miles off of the
beach in the entire region so go look
for them quick all right well when
you’re on the road this summer make sure
you show your support for Florida’s
Fisheries with a conserve Florida
Fisheries license plate funds from the
sale of the Red Fish Tag directly
support protecting and enhancing Marine
Resources habitat restoration water
quality and Coastal Environmental
Education so make sure you get yours now
at your local DMV or redfish tag.com it
sure is beautiful it sure must say it’s

fishing welcome back everyone we’re
getting Tarpon trout and sailfish on the
ca LOD Southeast region with an
occasional kobia on the side so talk to
us Captain Thomas what’s going on hey
Bri and Rick and everybody else in there
well Kobe are a hard fish to Target here
in the Southeast region most of them are
just in in incidental catch and it’s
just a matter of being at the right
place at the right time now we do
encounter them year round but November
through May is when most of of the Kobe
are caught and they are notorious for
hanging around Channel markers and buoys
where you can sometimes spot them
swimming up on the
surface you can also find them around
wrecks following Turtles especially
leather backs stingrays whale sharks and
even following bull sharks and they’re
usually not too picky about what they
eat some of the more popular baits and
my favorites a live pin fish a grunt
works great crabs are also good but it
just about any good live bait will work
also a jig with a plastic tail and
surface lures and popping lures like
chuggers those will work when there’s no
Li baate around a good uh popper to try
is a Savage Panic popper that would be a
great choice of a lure to cast if you
happen to see a kobia cruising up on the
surface now the T typical kobia tackle
for us support the plier is a pin 750
spinner we load it up with 20 lb mono
and use a 50 lb lader and then we use a
circle hook which I think works the best
for kobas either sticks over or 70 match
it to your bait and in the last few
weeks there’s been a few kobia caught on
the deeper recks in the 180 to 240 ft
range along with a few on the live baits
fished under the kite and then up in the
Hillsboro Boon Inlet areas there’s been
some caught following the bull sharks
average size nowadays is in the 25 to 30
lb range but you never know when a
larger one might show up got a photo
here this is a 30 lb copia that ate a
pinish a lot pin fish one of the deeper
wreck fished off keus game that we
caught aboard the flyer a couple weeks
ago in staying offshore sell fish buys
from pretty decent in the past week Sals
have been coming through in anywhere
from 100 to 300 ft of water they’ve been
biing live baits we’ve been like I like
to use herrings but gogg pters sardines
will also work want to Pish them under
the kite if you don’t have enough wind
which might be a case this weeken you
can drift or slowroll those light baits
most of the bites have been in areas
that have blue water in North current
but there’s also been a few fish caught
in The Greener water so don’t be afraid
to fish in that green water as long as
you got current that helps also look for
any free jumping sails if you can get
your baits out in front of them got a
good shot of getting a bite there moving
in sh all of the inlets throughout the
region have been holding Tarpon as well
as most of the lit Bridges and docks
throughout the icw and the inlets look
for marks on your fish finder or rolling
fish near the inlet lit Ms and also
along the adjacent beaches on both the
North and South side of the Jetties and
both the incoming and Alco Tides have
been good in the early mornings and
evenings you want to use a big live
shrimp or a live crab on a 6oo circle
hook it’s 60 to 80 lb mono or floral
carbon leader and around the bridges and
docks look for those tarp feeding along
the shadow lines on the outgoing tide a
big shrimp crab or mullet will be your
best bait or you can cast swimming plugs
from the shadow lines and work them on
out and some of these Tarpon have been
up into the 120 PB range and then we’ve
got some decent size sea trout being
caught in South and North bisane Bay in
the South Bay the best fishing has been
on the grass Flats on the western side
of the Bay from mat and hammock South to
Gables by the sea in the North End from
Venetian Causeway North to holiver Inlet
on both the East and West sides of the
bay you want to look for areas with good
moving water and heavy grass and
potholes 3D ft of water is all good
depth to look at them or look for them
and also look for any signs of bait Best
Bites have been around the higher uh
stages of the tide quarter ounce bass
assassin jig heads and 3 to 4 in plastic
tails in any color have been getting
bites but the bigger trout are being
caught on small life Pils herrings or
live shrimp you want to fish them under
a popping Cork and most of these Crow
been in the 15 to 20 in range with some
larger ones mixed in got a photo here of
a 22 in trout caught by my brother Rick
in South bisc Bay and that thing ate a
big old threadin hearing that a sailfish
would probably eat what is that what
happened when the pitcher did you go one
two three and you took the pitcher on
one what what happened well he he looks
a little dazed but he looks like that
normally so it’s not a big deal all
right go ahead keep going so don’t don’t
forget that the CCS start tournament
starts a Memorial Day weekend and early
entry gets a free ticket for the
contender raffle and your entry will
also qualify you to compete for up to
$500,000 in cash and prizes thank you so
much Jimbo we appreciate all your effort
each week and we’re going to go ahead
and take a look at the hot spots from
the Southeast region he says inore drift
live shrimp or crabs around the lit
Bridges and throughout the inlets for
early morning and evening Tarpon and
then offshore drift orite fish live
baits a 90 to 300 ft of water for
sailfish Kingfish black fin Tunis and an
occasional dolphin oh they’re so
photogenic all right you got to be
everywhere if you’re catching an Alo
equipment southwest region Cobia so
let’s find out exactly what that means
with Captain Ronnie Houston hi Ronnie
well like always it’s a pleasure being
here guys you know the Kobe is you want
to be fishing Rex artificial reath and
other natural structures with any live
bait presented in various sections of
the water column now theob is curious of
curious fish that roams the entire water
column so it’s night to have a bait on
the surface possibly in the middle and
on the bottom now the kobas aren’t picky
and just about any bait will work crabs
and shrimp will also work this time of
year as well but also to be smart to
have a large fck tail or maybe a
swimbait on hand in the event you see a
fish that might be out of range or if a
school comes up while you’re reeling in
a fish now when it comes to the cobius
things tend to happen fast and you need
to be ready to capitalize on them
quickly as you might only get a couple
shots and this week’s pick of the Kobes
is going to be from Mission fishing
Chargers if you’re looking to catch
kobus this guy’s been on them for the
last couple weeks second species is
going to be the red groupers you know
reports from uh C Bo Johnson to the
north is the bite has been pretty
consistent fishing moderate weather from
Fort Myers Beach right now the stump pth
oh says key depths have been 95 to 115
ft along with areas of hard bottom and
days of good moving current really
triggers a good bike but even if you
have some slower tidde beinging out out
no steps it might take a little bit of
work but the fish in those depths even
if the currents are slow are generally
legal size but he also said you want to
try alternating baits like cigar menow
squid and mullet strip to see what
they’re really key in on and this week’s
pick’s going to be with cap Bose’s
Charter catching a variety of groupers
and Snappers on uh those days like we’re
having this week with the good weather
the inore report is going to be the red
fish that bik seems to be improving
south from Marco South all the way down
into the Everglade now the M Tides have
been bent best before it gets too high
and before it gets too low you want to
concentrate on the outer golf islands
are best especially in the areas of
roaming mullet a variety of baits are
being used by most guys over here right
now to include the live filters or cut
mullet and Lady Fish on the bottom if
you’re targeting the red fish but the
artificials to include gold spoons J
Walkers and hijackers in 100 series root
beer colored paddle tails and nothing
beats right now uh yellow and brown Buck
Tails 8 O to qu ounce dip with uh shrimp
and this week’s pick’s going to be by
Captain Chris Brom Adam Marco with a
nice oversized red f last species is
going to be the carpet and you need to
listen to this fish P right now
throughout the whole region you can
Target beaches passes River mouth and
Bridge band but primarily stay on the
outer Coast even though the fish right
now are arriving up boa Grand there are
still plenty of areas where you can fish
these fish with no pressure back to the
South now obviously this week we’ve got
the light winds or winds out of the East
protect the coast but if we get a blow
you want to pattern the areas I
mentioned that will be comfortable for
the wind that day the bait’s going to
include live crabs Herring pinfish cut
baits on the bottom and a variety of 5
to 8 in swim beats this pick this week
is from Captain Chris Slattery up in the
northern end with a nice tarp and
release and like I said you don’t have
to get in the mix there’s a lot of areas
that I’m stook fishing right now plenty
of Tarpon and ain’t nobody fishing them
so keep your eyes open thank you so much
Ronnie we talk to you soon we’re going
to go Ahad and take a look at the hot
spots he says inore trout at the East
wall West wall and cap py is fishing
potholes and troughs and 2 to 5 ft of
water and then offshore the permit from
Goodland to Fort Meers Beach fishing
reck and artificials uh reefs uh 5 to 20
mi using live crabs nobody’s fishing
them that’s what we like to hear on this
show huhi all right well we’ve almost
completed our kobia run here on the
Florida Insider Fishing report but for
our final destination we’re traveling
into the takiuchi keys region for some
weekend fun when we come back so make
sure you check us out and of course

catch today’s power pole tip of the week
is about the power pole charge and you
know the reason why I love this battery
charger so much is it’s four systems in
one remember this it’s very lightweight
the lightest charger that I know of with
it being 8 lbs the other thing that I
love about it is I have the ability now
to charge my batteries when I’m running
back to the boat rep after using them
all day long so certainly that’s
something that I like but also a third
feature that is really uh one of my
favorites is I have the ability to
transfer the charging from the engine to
trolling motor batteries and I can
charge that way or if I need to charge
up my engine battery I can simply slide
through the app and make all that power
go towards that engine battery so I have
the choices when it comes to being able
to how on what I’m going to charge and
the fourth reason I really love it is
because of the emergency start feature I
have the ability to click on the
emergency start feature use the battery
juice that I have stored and guess what
jump that battery so that I can get home
from being 20 mi out in the Gulf if you
have any questions about the powerpole
charge simply go to Power poole. comom
and that’s today’s powerpole tip of the
week look at you on that app doing all
that proud of you so user friendly love
power P who would ever think that you
could control 90% of the things on your
boat with an app I mean that’s the world
we live in lot of people I guess but
let’s talk a little bit about something
Bri you know the last couple years this
time of year and during the winter we
had extremely warm temperatures so I
hear a lot of guys at the dock and at
the boat ramp oh this year is so you
know abnormal negative guys this year is
normal the late cold fronts in April
having it cold in January and February
and March not blistering cold but cool
yeah cool we had a winter we had cool
water temperature so guess what that
changes we live in a tropical place that
changes when a tarpon shows up that
changes when the T the when the permits
show up a lot of times people think oh
well the last two aprils I’ve been
fishing over here well guess what guys
this isn’t what you normally have so get
used to that part and adjust
accordingly next year if you have a cool
winter time yes it’s really important to
understand that guys nothing’s concrete
yeah and it seems like everything is
back to normal considering last year
exactly all right well we are ready to
take on some cobia in the Tako chis
region with none other than Captain
Ridge Murphy talk to us Ridge you know
here in the alter construction region we
got kobia that can be targeted all up
and down the Florida Keys on both sides
of the highway on the Atlantic side we
got guys in Tower Bo boats cruising up
and down the coast looking for sting
rays in the sand with schools of cobas
on their backs you throw live pinfish or
Pils up ahead of the sting rays and let
the fish find it but a more common way
of catching the kovas is on the Gulf
side wreck where you’re going to Chum on
the slack ties and get them to come up
to the surface you can throw live thin
fish or an RNR flare hawk in any color
and if you don’t have any numbers keep
an eye out for Turtles and there will be
a wreck close by use your bottom machine
to help you find it and then anchor or
spot lock up up in front of the wreck
and drift jig drifting or jigging baits
in and around the wreck with a common
leader size of 30 to 40 lb fluorocarbon
on a finwick pro elite 8ot heavy fast
Rod stacked with 20 to 40 lb braid on
your pen reel I have a photo of Bri and
I with a nice kobia that we ended up
catching earlier in this season a
a little bro this a bro in a sister
thing go ahead
what else you got offshore Ridge so
there’s there’s a mixed bag of pics but
you’re going to have to kind of work for
them the black fin tunos are on both the
is marada and the marathon pump you’re
going to have to Chum heavy with filters
and free lines too out the back of the
boat with no resistance just like you
would yellow tailing and then when you
get the bite just be ready cuz the
sharks are really really bad so you’re
going to have to put some heat on them
uh use a 30 lb to 40lb fluorocarbon
leader with a number two Eagle call live
bait hook also there’s some Mah around
in 200 to 700 ft of water on debris and
weed lines they haven’t really gotten on
the birds yet but you’re going to throw
live bait on the debris and then blind
troll the weed lines with an RNR Mahi
Magnet or rig balyo on an eagleclaw 70
to 90 a shy hook J hook depending on how
big the B whoo is um with a 40 to 60 lb
fluorocarbon leader all right let’s go
inshore bub inshore I spoke to Captain
Jared sear and he says that he’s seeing
lots of Bone Fish down in the lower Keys
with the occasional permit shot you’re
going to pull up on top of the flats
with the current looking for mutters and
tailor stop the boat short of the fish
and then throw a live shrimp way out in
front of them up current of the fish and
let him have time to find it you can
also throw Bucktail jigs in tan or pink
and then shrimp pattern flies to those
fish too if you really want to get
technical all right what else you got
bub um the cooler water temperatures are
making it a little a little bit more
challenging but the downtown middle Keys
tarpon fishing is really starting to
turn on guys are fishing in the Deep
channels in and around the bridges with
live mullets under a cork uh hooked in
the nose with an eagle CA 80 circle hook
and you can also Blind Fish these fish
with big paddle Tails like the bast
assassin Artemis Shad in Houdini or
smoke wagon or an RNR line through
mullet with 40 to 60 lb fluorocarbon
liter there’s some fish that are
starting to swim on the ocean too so you
can throw flies to those fish or big
bass assass and jerk baates make sure to
lead them really really big leads kind
of like a bone fish lead and slide it
past their face nice and easy guys so
Rie I got a question for you in regards
to fishing those tarping on the ocean
you just basically said you throw lead
them a whole bunch a lot of times guys
lose the fly so what do you want to what
kind of advice like when you’re the
colored line don’t you think it’s
important to understand the length of
the leader and that’s the big mistake
guys make a lot of a lot of times if you
watch your nail knot you’re sometimes
it’s hard to lose these you know you
lose these little little flies a lot of
guys are throwing small flies on the
ocean but if you watch your nail knot
even with a clear line you can see the
difference from your running line to
your your butt section of your leader so
kind of watch your nail knot don’t
really watch the fish and as the fish is
approaching it then you want to start
moving it you really don’t want to watch
the fish as much as you do knowing
exactly where that fly is or your your
bait really good at definitely help
that’s good advice Captain I appreciate
it but it’s time for me to go ahead and
read your hotpots so I’m going to go
ahead and get to the hot spots from the
Ulta equipment or takoi did I say it
right takiuchi takiuchi all right
Florida Keys region inure Bone Fish on
the flats mudding or tailing throw
Bucktail jigs or live shrimp up Curt and
slide it past them remember Keep Your
Rod tip up once that you get the bite to
keep the fish from rubbing his face on
the bottom and breaking you off and then
offshore the tun on the humps and Chum
heavily in Freel line baits back behind
the boat with the chum be ready to pull
on them because the sharks are really
bad oh no shks the Sharks all right now
it’s time to check out some tournaments
going on in the Florida Keys are we
ready first is the marathon Premier
sailfish tournament April 18th through
the 20th where Pro seed supports Mission
fishing a group that organizes fishing
trips for special needs children and
their families next is the marathon

School graduating seniors and finally is
the farro Blanco Tarpon tournament where
teams fish three nights between between
May 4th and 11th with three different
captains at three different bridges in
Marathon and tournament proceeds benefit
Ronald McDonald House Charities for more
