Uh Luke I cannot imag I know what it’s like being a live studio with him what on Earth is it like trying to do business with him he deals with Barry more than me so that’s the best bit now for Luke he’s never had to deal with me
Directly there’s Barry and dar well petb Watford and Tottenham trying to buy a play from them three would be the toughest really yeah and I always remember when I was when I was at Watford we um I went with the chairman Scott and doo we went to see Daniel Ley
To buy kapoo and was in there you know having a negotiation and then just said guys I’ve got something you want so it’s you paid the price that I want and it’s a bit with if someone wants to buy from Gino and Scott and the same would be if
Someone wants to buy it from darra and Barry you know if you want their their player pay what they’re asking I remember there’s a in January we were getting bids off a club for a player and the owner was you know hadn’t it’ been in football a couple of years but not
Long and he said to to bar are you are you out of your mind turning this down like your peterb and somebody said yeah but have you seen the deals they’ve done over the years this is what they do like you don’t Nick their players for and I’m not brag about
That you at the end of the day you just say yes or no right when I look at it l more lately you’ve been West Brom sporting and technical director before that notum Forest sporting director before that Watford sporting director yeah at Watford I mean how you’re still
In such good health I don’t really know I congratulate you for it how did you sell the job to prospective Watford managers because that is one revolving door yeah um still a big club J Jim um back in 2014 when I started with Watford that was my first role was sporting
Director previously I’d been head of recruitment Chief Scout of clubs and it was probably the best place to go and learn because of Scot very good how they G so at the time I walked in Scott ducksbury um was a CEO he’s still the CEO and chairman now and jino poo um the
Owner the difference with that club to any other which gave me a great grounding was youo poo is at the training ground most days and that’s on if you go to the other 92 clubs it’s very very rare I’m sure when dar’s over you’re at the training
Grounds but that’s his role I was remember my first day there was you know a big office there was two desks in each Corner hands on and you know this is your desk and Gino’s in the opposite corner and I thought oh perhaps you just
Hear to welcome me first day no no this is how it works and it’s like K once you get used to it yeah it becomes normal did it take a bit get new what’s he doing there he he’s involved in everything Jim in player Rec in terms of
He owns the club he sees it it’s his business with udy you know whereas a lot of owners you know a football club will be small part of their business profile how did you feel about it at first I was shocked I’ve never seen it before or or
Worked with that but with time you just get this to Norm how you climbed a ladder if you don’t meet an owner isn’t that brilliant to work near the owner but you know what once you left the building you didn’t hear from him because youve done your day’s work
Unless there was something to come up and the trans window they you have maybe a conversation even but you then go back into work the next morning start again whereas I used to speak to other sporting directors where their owners are in Asia America and they’re speaking
To me at all times of the evening and things like that and sometimes decision making it got done like that because you know’s there that’s one of the other pluses you know when you want something now be honest with me l g poo being in the training ground working yards from
You was that a help or hindrance to you it was a help for me and at times though Jim I think it was hindrance to the for certain managers and the reason why I said it’s at a period we had that come from Udi which is goo’s other team we
Had players that come from other Italian clubs and with the owner being around and they weren’t in the manager plans they found it easier to go straight to the the owner and I don’t think that is a good thing with the manager being on board that it was if there was a
Negative that would be it yeah and I take it nobody took it upon themselves to suggest Mr pel do you think you’re maybe being a bit too familiar around us all here no it’s me you’d never have done that no I mean I tomorrow I’m there all day but we have a massive
Recruitment meeting based on next year plan A or B so because when I’m over I take the chance to spend about daily daily I’ve got Barry I’ve got Liz who who does a brilliant job you know in the football recruitment with bass I don’t need to be there every day but they know
Where I am when they need me you know I’ll speak three four times a day so so I can’t judge him for that by the way but you know what Jim with that so is you’ve got the owner and but You’ got Scott duck speed’s CEO and he manages
Everyone brilliantly Scott you know so in terms of of people expectations if there’s a frustration we can’t get something done it’s a matter of time when to go and have knock on Gino’s door and this is all you learn with him being there day by day you know oh wait Scott
Always said wait to have a meeting with him rather than ask someone cover the phone yeah because that time so Scott controlled it all and obviously the period I had there I learned so much we had some success you know with promotion stand in the league I play a small part
As a sport director you do big part but you know it was a great great learning per but Luke having said that 20 managers the P’s rain at Watford yeah does this model work well I don’t I I think other people have taken on their model now haven’t
They you know I look in the championship and with Birmingham six manes okay two caretaker and listen I don’t think they’ have Gary row if um yeah of course of of course Tony M well well enough bless you know Huddersfield are on two three M on
Three Charon are on three that used to be that was watford’s yeah three four five years ago now it seems to be the Norm so you know Watford now have tend to stick with MES slightly longer the only thing they have they have done over the last couple of two or three years
Which Gino didn’t like to do pry is do a caretaker Tom clevy at the minut caretaker he didn’t really believe in the caretaker role they always had someone quickly ready to go in and it was there was a little bit of a hiccup when um when I was first there the year
We got promoted with Billy McKinley yeah Billy McKinley was um Oscar Garcia’s assistant Oscar Garcia resigned bil mckin got the job and two G late two games later we played on Tuesday and Saturday beat bright and Drew with brenford and he’s been removed because tanovich coming in but what should have
Happened is he should have been caretaker yeah instead of saying this is our new manager so that was the that was the mistake then but now Gino you know caretaker with Tom being there they done Hayden Mullins a couple of times sure so they are starting to change um who’s the
Giani the recruitment guy they brought back was we we dealt with him during the British Som belonger purchase but he’s Barry told me when they were they were bidding on Hector in January one our players and he that’s him yeah yeah good guy we dealt with him years ago he came
Back didn’t hean luab was had a c when G bought the club in 20112 he had a couple of years there he moved on in I come in and he’s joined just before Christmas I think gotcha he’s there back it’s back there um and why did you get a ballet
From there what happened oh that was a Lov question wasn’t it listen it’s it’s hot it’s what happens in football we all get sacked in football everyone everyone get sacked in football you doing you’re still there I’m the owner but if I worked in football get sucked
It’s it ended um in a nice way cuz I still go back there I was there a good Friday and I think it’s just a Time managers sporting directors with you know you have three Four Seasons at Max and then new cycle yeah yeah by the way
Luke Saxon did his job of course so any owner out there and there I’ve always said people need directors of football I was one of the first to do it luckily I’ve got the best in the business working for me but for people out there looking for somebody we that with him
He’s as good as his work he’s a good guy were you asked by poo about Rob Edwards luk yes at the time I was Consulting for Watford yeah um and you know they wanted to um go down that young British uh manager I think Gino had
Liked what he’d seen with gr Potter at Brighton with Steve Cooper at Forest obviously they weren’t going to get either of them and I was just asked to put shortage together Rob was on that um he obviously ended up getting the job um and it’s a shame it lasted 10 games um
Obviously for Rob now he’s moved on and it looks decision looks he can potentially look even worse but you know that was just me pushing putting a what I thought were people that could do the job Scott really went for Rob aggressively from forest green and I
Don’t think they were too happy so um Scott knew what he wanted and you know theti he got it right and they got it right but what’s the best bit of business you’ve ever done good question as director of football um I always look people always ask that there and say
What’s the best player one of the best players is people like Ben Watson sure that we’re in the championship brilliant um under SLV shanovich it’s January wig B the league he can’t get in the Wigan team yeah Mal m w pick him for whatever reason he comes to us he was different
Class and it’s just that British player that we needed we had a lot of f players experience he then goes and plays in the Premier League the following year for us on the kyk was outstanding but I ain’t going to get you a job I’m going to ask
You again because this helps you get a job what’s the best deal you’ve made to make a few quid for an owner CU that’s what owners care about right is Money Jim so what’s the best deal you’ve done making money on a trans look at the most
Recent one Pereira there you go how much bought for 10 some to 30 well done now you got a job 20 million inside how long how long did that take that deal 10 million to 30 how long was at the club uh two seasons yet BOS there you go
Question answered l d you can come again Luke ding with us H stay with us Luke great stories coming from you my friend Jim White and Simon Jordan Monday to Friday mornings from 10: on a.m. on da via the talks sport app and on your smart speaker talk sport

Do these people pay to come on talksport . Seems like they’re only here to promote themselves
Would hate to owe Levy a tenner. Probably make you hand over ya passport and bang interest on it too.
Tighter than 3 coats of paint
Who’d the Irish guy and which club does he own?
Spurs funny little club
Scott Duxbury was at West Ham during the Tevez controversy. He was later released from the club when Sullivan and Gold took over.
I would have been shocked if Tottenham hadn't been one of the three. 😀
Lol will they let the guy speak good god
I would have thought he'd say David 'parasite' Sullivan.
Darragh = Top LAD Proper Clobber 💯 Facts
sporting director is like a sport surgeon. there’s a lot of them but only one or two actually made real difference. beckham, lebron, everyone went to the same surgeon in us. most of sporting director just trying to get cheaper chartered flights and sign whoever they can sign based on wyscout 😂. if signing lewis hall and livramento for 70 million combined is the benchmark everyone over 13 years old with access to internet could do just that
Football seems to be full of spivs, charlatans and con men.
What a waste
Nice to see something a bit different
Daragh sounding like a modern day Terry Wogan 😂
PLEASE GET THESE TWO ON MORE OFTEN – AMAZING CONTENT! LOVED IT!
Brilliant this fella. Great insight
Luke Dowling was one of the worst things to happen to WBA. Horrendous appointment. Spent 7 million on Kenneth Zohore for a start.
Who were the three?
Levy loooooooool
The Suge Knight of Football.
He has to be one of the most articulate, intelligent people we've ever seen on talkSPORT!! 👍
4:00 "Plan A or B" says Darragh MacAnthony
Or in other words, Darren Ferguson or Grant Mccann?
Jim White asking a question which shows he hasn't been listening to what the guy literally just said.
Looks like kier starmer
Peterborough owner is so smug, arrogant, patronising.
Can this Darren nobody stop talking please
Jim is so oblivious to everything. Don't even need him for this conversation
Haven’t watched yet but my house on Tottenham being one
Pereira went for 17m, not 30m. Should have been 40m.
He just called Watford a big club. 😂
Bragging about that Pereira deal is odd. Easily a top 10 PL player who was worth £40m and massively undersold. Pretty sure it wasnt £30m either.
