A deep dive into Cameron Young’s swing. Young is one of the longest hitters on the PGA Tour, and his powerful golf swing has a lot to do with that.
Young delivered a great performance in 2023, with a flurry of Top 10 finishes across DP World Tour and PGA Tour.
No doubt, Cameron Young will be looking to win his first major championship in 2024.
This swing analysis hopefully gives some tips or ideas to take back into your own golf game.
Thanks for watching!
Hey guys welcome back to the channel today we’re going to be taking a look at Cameron young this guy absolutely hammers the golf ball he’s top 25 player in the world uh but I think at the time of recording this he’s sort of seven or eighth in driving distance so really
Whales on it and if you haven’t seen Cameron young hit a ball in person add that to your bucket list because it really is a sight to behold it’s it’s uh super impressive um we’re going to have a look at why I think he hits the ball
So far um but also just have a look at some of the fundamentals with Cam so let’s uh let’s take a look at this we’ll wind it back um first of all as you’d expect uh quality player does an amazing job of just keeping that club perfectly
On plane in back swings if you’re recording your own swings from down the line um just sort of you know have a look at this if you’re starting your back swing well uh generally speaking things tend to sort of follow on very very nicely from there as he gets into
The top uh what you’re going to see is he actually gets his left arm into quite a high sort of steep um position so uh I mean the Sha’s really uh really nice the club face is in quite a neutral angle his his lead wrist is is also pretty
Flat there but yeah he’s got his lead arm just sort of sitting across the shoulder plane show the planes just below tour average there um quite common in a lot of play players that hit it far but to be honest with you it it often comes down to the length of the
Players’s arm particular like the players uh forearm and that tends to sort of dictate how um you know high they like to get these hands at the top of the back swing so someone like Rory maroy with shorter uh you know arms or a shorter sort of wingspan tends to have
It sort of more flush across the the shoulder plane but yeah just um uh just interesting there and actually you know if you take one of possibly the best uh drivers of the golf ball with the exception of Rory maroy on the PJ tour in the last 10 years Dustin Johnson you
Know he gets himself actually into a very similar position with his left arm so uh you know 64 is degrees pointing inside the golf ball much stronger lead wrist position so super bow at the top um but yeah just to uh just to give you an idea it’s uh it’s not necessarily a
Bad thing so we’ll come back to cam um because he does some other beautiful moves in here so as he comes into transition Cam’s just going to do a beautiful job and this is a great little shwing move beautiful job of just dropping the hands pretty much straight
Down as opposed to sort of working out towards the ball um gets that shaft laying down beautifully and then you’re going to see him in this position where uh you know’s he’s got the club perfectly on plane 51° matching the plane of the shaft setup so that’s
Really cool and then he’s one of these players that likes to um you know keep his right arm quite bent coming into impact so very similar to Victor hland or Colin morawa so that right elbow is going to sort of press or stay pressed against his rib cage uh comes into
Impact again keeps the club on playe quite nicely and then what you’re going to notice guys and this is one thing to sort of keep an eye on in your own swings if you’re filming from down the line so a lot of amateurs when they come through the ball especially if they’re coming
From you know too far on the inside they tend to want to um you know get their hands pushing down the target line here and then the right hand sort of you know releases and flips over and it’s a really sort of inconsistent way of releasing The Club at the
Bottom uh a lot the pros on tour are actually doing the opposite so they’re they’re starting to to or well not starting to but they move the hands left and whenever you see a player in this position where the hands disappear behind the Torso but you can still see
The shaft and the club it just means that they’ve done such a great job uh of exiting the hands low and left but also keeping the the face very very sort stable coming through the shop and then um what you’ll see is rather than the the club head working you know somewhere
Up here on top of the shoulder it um it will sort of appear underneath the shoulder and you know splitting the sort of midsection in half so it’s an incredible uh movement through impact and into the follow through so that’s really cool the other thing to just
Check out as well here with Cameron young and this is a trait of all great ball Strikers guys so again you’re filming your swings try and measure these angles he’s got um you know he’s got quite a steep um shoulder plane here 68° just coming through the shot uh and this is
Where you want to be you rarely see or pretty much never see any tour players with quite like a flat shoulder plane coming through impact they’re all steeper than they were at the top of the back swing uh I mean if you look at you know the great man
Himself um and look at sort of his action through the ball with with driver and it was more pronounced with some of his irons as well but with driver he’s kind of getting his um you know shoulder plane there at what about 69 70° or something so you know just goes to show
That’s uh that’s definitely a a position you want to be trying to hit with um with your own swing so look if we um if we wind this back let’s just have a look at why I think cam um is able to generate the power and that it does and
Just hit it so damn far um and interestingly I’m going to add in here actually hii Mai armor because if you haven’t noticed it’s a very similar back swing move so they both got um you know this kind of little pause at the top and you know if you
Remember back in the 2000s Butch and Tiger Woods worked quite a lot and there’s a video talking about this worked quite a lot on doing this drill on the Range where tiger would effectively pause at the top of the Swing to sort of syn up the um you know
The the hands and arms and the pivot and um you know these two guys do pretty much exactly the same thing but if we look at um if we look at cam Young on the left here he’s going to work up and then what you’ll see just watch his
Right hip so most players will sort of keep that right hip on the line but cam actually does such a great job of like loading into the trail hip you know his right butt cheek is going to work through the line that means he’s got all the pressure onto his
Right heel pressure and weight onto the right heel at the top of the back swing and he’s lost you know uh a decent amount of height here so he’s really pressed into the ground and it’s you know very very similar move with Hideki mat Arma Master’s Champion
Um you know slightly different sort of arm structure arm position at the top but yeah you can just see how much these guys are sort of loading into the um loading into the leg in back swing um and I think this is this you know the
Secret it’s the amount of power that um that Camy young has in his lower body that’s kind of the secret here so he presses down into the ground and then as he works down into um into back swing and this is kind of like a you know one of the there’s many
Different ways to generate CED speed but one of the ways to do it with with your ground forces or vertical forces is by this kind of if we um you know draw a line into his belt buckle here it’s with this kind of Rapid lowering and then um you know elevating
Of the pelvis so he’s going to lower he’s going to almost squat down I mean look at his leg structure there but he’s going to lower his um his pelvis and then at left arm parallel all of his weight’s pretty much on his lead side and he’s just going to
Press so hard into his lead side that’s going to allow him to start extending and just look at how much you know his pelvis starts extending here into impact the distance between the top line and the bottom line you know it’s an incredible amount of like vertical force
That he’s able to put through his lead side um and that for cam young is sort of the main source of power and you can actually see it a little bit better here on the right side so let’s just um we’ll draw a couple of lines but we’ll watch watch his head
Lowering um you know we’ll draw a line on his hip there just to show you what um what he’s doing with his weight so you know does a very very good job of just sort of loading into that right side he’s moved away from this hip line
He’s compressed into the ground and then as he sort of works back down that’s where he squats and just look look at that left leg um position it’s absolutely incredible how much look how much sort of fle external rotation flexibility strength that he’s got that lead leg is really insane I can’t recall
Seeing a position like it but at this point he’s pushing so hard into his left side it’s actually going to make him sort of you know have both feet off the ground to impact pretty much as he comes through his shot I mean look at his footwork there it’s really incredible
Stuff and the fact that he’s able to do that whilst keeping the sort of shaft you know in quite from from flipping over you know manages that release really really nicely it’s incredible but yeah look at um just just have a look from face on at how he sort
Of well let’s look at the starting position of his hips first of all so his hips you know probably going to start in this position here get to the top you know lowers them and then at left arm paralyzed really going to start to raise
Up so they’re back to sort of this level coming into impact I mean just look how much you know the gap between the top and the bottom line again is just absolutely insane um I mean I’d love to see how much this guy squats in the gym blimy so yeah I
Mean uh it’s it’s an incredible movement he’s a very very powerful hits uh I’ll be honest I I sleep on Camy young sometimes I think he um he’s the type of player that will do very very well around the Masters you know hits at a country mile um he’s a little bit off
With his approach play but you know when it’s on he’s competing for the title like he was at the the open and the Dubai deser classic a couple of weeks ago where he nearly took down Rory so uh yeah brilliant stuff um very very nice golf swing guys thanks again for
