Joining us as we a Cheo the fat on the final the finale of the Barkley marathons it’s been such an exciting few days coming up on on 60 hours we have what 12 13 minutes to go before the cut off I’m Ain shimmons uh we do a by by

Like monthly show uh called Trail talk on YouTube some Vlogs some RIS videos basically anything Trail and ultra running usually with a m Focus uh Brian my co-host for this show is one of our regular panelists Brian uh AKA Wolfie as we call him uh dialing in from hot

Arizona how’s things Brian it’s good I got the AC on so we’re uh we’re good over here we got a nice little Cris cider so we’re ready to dig into this cheers it’s uh it is just after 9 p.m. in London so um yeah let’s let’s get on

With this so what we’re going to do is just going unack what we know so far we’ve obviously had uh four finishers at this point and uh some some drama as we expected obviously we’re all thinking will Jasmine make it on time we we just

Don’t know it’s it’s going to be so so tight so you know it’s coming up on uh it’s 405 uh p.m. in Tennessee local time and the weather has remained settled for all of the Barkley which has been I mean amazing last year the weather was pretty

Good I think this might be the the best weather year yet what do you think oh is in recent history most definitely certainly since I’ve ever been uh aware of the event or take an interest in it so yeah that’s that’s one of the big topics I think as much as Jasmine’s

Still on the show the weather is also something we got to dive into yeah when when have we ever had a had a year where there hasn’t been some sort of Storm come through some R some winds whatever it’s just it’s it’s it’s been like an

Ultra run on holiday out there with the briers yeah yeah yeah it seems like there was a you know like what about a seven eighty year run where the weather was just impossible to probably complete the event so kind of nice to see the pendulum swing the other way and give

Them the best shot these guys are going to see to uh to get the Finish yeah totally so obviously the big news uh so far is that aor Bez the Ukrainian uh Canadian uh runner finished with what can only be described as a smug face did

Did you catch that smug face I did I did I’m glad we got I’m glad we got that I love it so 58 hours 44 minutes uh for the the smug face finish he ran 1258 for the fifth Loop which is by no means a a

Super fast loop but he did what he had to do he looked like he finished comfortably he has honestly looked solid from start to finish uh impressed but with uh aore yeah oh absolutely I think and I don’t know if it’s accurate but apparently the quotes flying around he

He uh taunted LZ and said maybe you should add a six Loop so apparently he felt pretty confident about the effort he had out there today that that’s that’s um something we’ve seen on Twitter yeah he’s quoted as saying uh uh maybe add a what was it

Maybe you should add a sick flip right yeah I’m not sure that’s that’s the that’s the route to making the Barkley uh harder um right or or on the edge of of of possible but we’re going to get into some of that I think uh yeah Jim uh

We’re 10 minutes left 9 Minutes nearly uh before uh you know everyone out there get gets gets Tapped Out uh and interestingly uh Barry’s time was 20 minutes 21 minutes slower than aelian from last year which is interesting yeah and I think with with Barkley it’s kind of hard to really

Compare year-over-year um you know even with better weather I mean you make just a I feel like this is a type of an event where you know we all run traditional types of of races 100 mile or fix time even but the mistakes you make at Barkley I’m sure extrapolate with much

Bigger consequences to your total finish time so hard to really say you know why he would have finished slower with with better conditions maybe he was just doing doing all he he had to do he didn’t seem like it was too taxing for him you know did

The guy even break a sweat yeah maybe just the fifth Loop was just a pure Victory lap where he was Moon walking and stuff so who knows obviously this guy is is kind of new to to a lot of us uh Magnus mentioned in the chat he was second to

Harvey in Big’s backyard somebody else mentioned that in one of the previous streams and uh he he’s also he’s won whatever there is to win in in Canada uh fat dog won 120 he was second at the infamous uh wam event a couple of years

Ago so the guy has pedigree but also his Al sign up only goes back maybe I think three-ish years so fairly new to the game or fairly new to North America I’m not sure if anyone uh knows any more Intel on that you know drop in the chat

It’ be fun fun to know that and and get get that spread around and in later shows and then it is fascinating to see the uh sorry it is fascinating to see the uh the success at both the uh Big’s backyard format and then also at Barkley

I can only attribute that maybe to just the sleep deprivation that you’re able to persevere through through those those two events seem wildly different but to see some similar names pop up at those two at these two events um kind of Str struck me as a an odd takeaway here yeah

I think sleep deprivation and the ability to recover are two of the unique qualities it takes to be the best in this sport or certain issues of this sport such as the Barkley but then you’ve got the other variables like the navigation and we also have of um things

Like local experience that that John Kelly brings to the table which is so unique and that that poses the question would we have had so many pairs coming through on fun runs if it wasn’t for kind of doubling up on with experienced other Runners what do you think yeah I

Think that that was one of the the items I was going to want to tease out with you is what do you think uh Gary is thinking right now cuz I I immediately thought boy with with what 10 or 12 on a fifth Loop and it looks like you know

We’re setting records for for finishes I mean God your heart kind of breaks thinking if Gary was in this field this year with some proper Fitness it would have been the year for him to do it right like what what do you think you think you know guys like that if they

Were here this year it would have been their year uh you know I think the Barkley has broken Gary many years ago either that or having to work through that film with uh with Ethan Newbery but something something broke and they ended up basically retiring and right coming a

Full-time R day and uh running with projects but yeah we we’ll move on from Gary let’s just let’s just finish off on John because we are getting tight on time and uh we we want to have our eye on on the on the feeds which which we do

See if there’s any news coming in from the course um but John Kelly he’s last year 50 at 42 which was uh 30 minutes quicker essentially than this year 2017 when he got the Finish 29 or 5930 so a little slower than this year and then uh so basically that means this

Year’s his second fastest time for his third finish so that’s quite an achievement to get the three finishes oh absolutely I think when LZ is ready to step down and no longer run the event it’s John’s to take over I that’s the only thing he hasn’t done at

Barkley yet is run the damn event so um yeah I think that’s what his future holds he’s going to be either blowing a conch or lighting some sort of cigarette I think you know 10 15 years down the road as the uh Rd to to take the torch

You know 10 10 years from now John could be starting the Barkley by taking a drag on a VAP or something who knows yeah right right did you just a side note actually did you notice that Laz was sort of a little bit more to the side this year

And one of the other sort of volunteers was doing a lot of page counting LZ was always in view but he seemed to have not been just doing as much of the the kind of the page counting and some of this other stuff did you notice that I didn’t

But now that you uh yeah now that you pointed out I do recall the pictures I saw there were others involved so yeah again maybe he’s trying to get back to being the recluse no longer wanting to be front and center with all the media hype that had a crescendo there you know

Three four years ago a bit hard I think the Barkley has as much hype as Western States and UTMB it’s a it’s a certain time of year nothing else has happened I certainly feel like the bark the Barkley has come around and okay now it’s Ultra rolling season we’ve had our big uh

Buying event in March on lfg from here on right absolutely Ely how much more time we got we got to be getting we’re cutting it close right yeah yeah we are and uh it is 4:14 local time so we’ve just got a couple of minutes left let’s go Jasmine come on

Jasmine we want to see get this finished yeah while we’re waiting we’ve we’ve also had Jared Campbell come through for his fourth finish and 5930 and quoted as saying that new section is brutal so um Jared Campbell with the fourth the fourth finish so happy that that guy has

Has touched the gate and completed five Loops again what do you think of J uh total Class Act I think it was mentioned here as far as how he I think deferred and let somebody else go with the more preferred Direction there if I’m getting

The Intel right so yeah I mean just a classic guy deserved the finish and uh I mean good for him I mean only somebody with his experience I think could say something like that where that new section was really brutal right I mean most I mean half the field 80% of the

Field they wouldn’t even know what a new section look like that’s just how much coarse familiarity he’s got out there yeah that that’s so true and just refresh nothing yet in from from from kith on X another finisher we’ve had is Greg Campbell uh 8 minutes after Jared in 5938

Uh yeah been a solid guy I think in the first stream we took the Mickey out of him a little bit because he was from New Zealand uh um pondering whether he may have been the guy that dropped the trash right thankfully it wasn’t um Greg but he’s come through uh and firsttime

Finisher one one previous Fun Run so that’s our first first time finisher for this year is that right uh yeah that’s good to see yeah because I mean as as much success as we’ve seen it’s Oh e or2 yeah he just rocked up and de it on site that’s how easy it

Was wow yeah that does put in perspective to what he accomplished so that’s crazy yeah so another fun fact that we have is Sebastian um I’m not going to try and say Sir the French man on his first attempt admirably has got through and uh finished uh four Loops went out on the

Fifth but uh news coming back in that he actually did not complete the loop and he’s uh faced the the bugler so he is out and to be fair I think even time wise he was a little bit late um as in on his fourth Loop he was always going

To be crunched on time just looking at the lap times you know he was 45 minutes after Jasmine on the fourth look and we know that Jasmine is potentially out here we’re now on 417 and there’s no news of Jasmine finishing so H it’s not looking good

Let’s hope that uh Keith is too busy uh watching the finish and uh there’s going to be a delay of some minutes coming in but that would be that would be devastating what about uh Damian Hall just why we wait to see uh that we have this confirmed what about Damien Hall uh

We’ve sort of uh We’ve pondered through all of the live streams whether he would make it when it came to a solo Loop and he hasn’t he has finished the loop but from the wrong direction which is basically uh another way of saying he got lost which is something that we

Thought that we thought might happen or we thought could happen we knew oh we’re getting some updates we’re getting updates oh we got an update from9 5821 thank you naen oh my goodness history is made and we’re here live guys yes this we got 235 people live celebrating this Monumental achievement unbelievable brilliant

Jasmine Paris with the 5958 and 21 seconds first female finisher in Barkley history first four Loops first five Loops this is absolutely is and this has got to be performance of the Year absolutely I mean that there’s been a lot of women that have come before her with tremendous accolades in the sport

And for her to plant the flag here this year I mean that’s I mean what she comes back next year I think with maybe you know does she just try to get the overall Victory now I mean this is incredible what she’s doing she’s raising the bar just beyond a finish I

Think she’s got untapped potential to go beyond on this what like what a what a um an understated person Jasmine is too you know keeps the head down did you see the video that Harvey posted at the end of luk 4 of Jasmine with the cat and no no

This was this was this was the crew Point beside the G before she started the fifth Loop and she honestly looked out of it whenever she stood up she kind of stumbled back a little bit she was just concentrating on eating and getting the calories in Jared come walking up

The road and essentially said to her what what direction do you want to go do you want to go clockwise you want to go counterclockwise being the gentleman that he is and that Jasmine was sort of like um I don’t care right whatever whatever whatever

Way I have to go I’ll go but uh she’s just a a Class Act and 59 58 and 21 seconds I mean she couldn’t have made it any closer for us right no apparently in the chat they’re saying that’s the slowest finishing time ever so I mean just a flare for the dramatic

Right here this is outstand I mean we I think we both kind of conceded it wasn’t happening until the chat lit us up with the update so that’s incredible I mean that’s what we thought but we’ve also now had it confirmed that there’s about a two minute delay between

What happens on course and Keith Thun sent the Tweet because yeah it took you know it was 19 minutes past before before we saw anything come through like right as you said comparing Jasmine to to even like Courtney’s had a go Magie G all’s been there and had a go and had

And some experience there Jasmine just has the the the the the secret sauce the the ingredients to make success at this with her background right absolutely yeah I mean it’s it’s it’s facts you know she’s got the uh the trophy engraver right now you know putting her

Name Forever on the uh the Barkley finishers list so I think it raises it’s like K it’s like K chogi breaking too I think women everywhere now are going to rethink like you know maybe the Barkley is doable so um it’s exciting that’s what happens whenever a record is set or

A something is broken it’s raises the bar because a lot of the a lot of challenges are about believing you can do it and a woman has now beaten the Barkley has beaten the course has finished it and um also done it in style done it in class every

Every Loop she went out on she pretty much went out on her own she never finished she there was always a gap between her and somebody else whenever she touched that gate yeah yeah that’s worth a lot too yeah because we’ve seen others who uh you know yeah their strategy was to just

Uh be a coattail rider you know not that that’s a knock on anything that’s great strategy but it just adds a a bit more shine when uh the purist can see that you did it all on your own yeah and Nadine forest in the chat uh yeah total

Uh five finishers that’s incredible and uh was it an easier year what do you think Brian are we gonna are we going to put this down as an easier year does it even matter now well yeah so this is what I was going to talk to you about

Right like we talk about weather with course records at places like Western States and things like that you know is Barkley ever an easy year I mean like I get it like some years are going to be insufferable and probably physically impossible but yeah I mean this weather

May it to be more um uh capable of the finish it you know a finish was more possible but uh I it’s still a hell of an effort to get the Barkley done on any year I don’t care you know if the the birds are chirping in the park or not I

Mean it’s incredible I’m not going to say the weather you know was some sort of like Factor qualifying who finished this year these are badass humans that finished the Barkley yeah and as Janessa says in the CH Jared was quoted as saying that the new section was brutal

And right Luke times weren’t you know considerably faster than anything we did see maybe a 30 minute uh shortening of time per Loop compared to last year and maybe we attribute that to the to nicer weather or more sustained nicer weather right yeah exactly there’s so many factors that contribute where exactly

One year the course maybe plays a little bit harder uh route finding might be more difficult weather might be something of a challenge so yeah we’re always trading off I think with different aspects of the Barkley that change the Dynamics but it’s the Barkley you get the finish and the story I’m I’m

Typically the one that’s you know controversial with talking about things like that for performance but when it comes to the Barkley I’m not I don’t want I don’t have any patience for somebody bringing up the weather making it a soft year well I mean I’m just bringing it up

For debate don’t don’t me no no no no no you know it’s all good Chris Chris in in the chat saying that John ran slower that’s right uh he did run run slower Chris but it was his second fastest time uh so you know there’s there’s there’s

Variation there which again uh these are all relative it’s a different course every year it’s different weather every year the you know no no Barkley is ever the same all we know is that they start and finish at the yellow gate and uh the

Rest of it is a little bit of a mystery and that’s something that we love about it right absolutely always the mystery shrouded in mystery uh biggie there’s no media through yet but I’m sure some video will emerge now whenever uh a finished it was

Quite a while before we saw a video come through um but I would uh we’ll be sharing some of that on Instagram as as soon as we see it interestingly if we just jump over we ran a poll in the Instagram broadcast channel that we have

If you want to check that out there’s a link in the description of this current live we just sort of asked what time do you think the first finisher uh will come in and most people thought it was going to be a high 57 and uh which was a bit of a surp

Surprise some people even thought it was a 56 um but I’m I don’t know if the people were clicking 56 had any clue about how long a loop was going to take and then the minority of people said 58 so uh you know what do people know on Instagram clearly nothing at this

Stage yeah we don’t know anything the people that know it are out there on course out there actually doing it so we’re just uh we’re pundit just clicking a b a but a button on Instagram that’s all we are uh what what did you guess in

The pool I think I was the 57 as well I was in the majority thinking uh I was going to be a bit faster but uh wrong yeah it did it honestly felt like Loop five was going to be like a four person race and it could have been

Anybody’s and some of the commentary coming through about various people at the fire tire and on rat jaaw it did seem like uh Jared for one was was closing in at one point but uh yeah it wasn’t it wasn’t to be uh M Mar in the chat asking thoughts

On if anyone would be direct record of 52 hours that’s a that’s a pretty stout record right Brian uh yeah I mean since what we just saw this year from Bonafide veterans and and newcomers that are you know every bit as polished as what’s been had

Before so I mean what what year was that set what was what what year was that how many years are we talking about uh I mean I’m putting on the spot here I’m just spitballing it’s been a while right that’s not a recent it’s not recent no yeah not

Seeing yeah I mean I so again like you know contextualize that I don’t know what the course used to look like and how many iterations removed from that we are to uh you know toughen up the course and put a little bit more teeth into it

But again no no shame on who ran 52 hours that’s that’s was it only four Loops that’s mind boggling that that that was BR Brett M in 20 2012 and J Campbell ran a a six or 56 flap for second year I mean four hours faster than Jared

Campbell so who’s this guy I guess we got some homework to do for a future Trail talk episode yeah that that’s mad uh must have been but these these guys ran 740 luk one wow you know a whole different yeah yeah uh different whole different strategy yeah different type of course

Different type of uh conditions I think you know what do you think about is this the best that we could see out of John Kelly the conditions are right he’s got all of the experience he’s come into this prepared and he’s still running in and around the same as his previous

Other finishes don’t I didn’t hear any reports that he had any issues what do you think I think it depends on what he wants out of it right like I guess the Barkley can be something different for each Elite competitor some want a fun run some want a finish and maybe

Somebody says I want the damn course record you know go Bust or go go to Glory right like maybe sometimes they play a little safer if they have experience and thinking they got the full 60 hours for the finish and so you know the time is irrelevant um so yeah I

Guess it all just depends on what they want out of it yeah interestingly Brett Brett’s record year he also ran 116 for the fifth Loop so absolutely gunning it the whole way it must have been brilliant conditions right I like biggie Johnson here with Chuck Norris wears Jasmine under

Rus let him fly I mean she’s gonna be glory yeah she’s the new gold standard so let’s just have a have a think about this was this the right mix of competitors you know we had John um we had Jared we had multiple finishers we had people with experience we had uh

Good Navigators with good weather was this just the perfect mix or a record five finishers I think so yeah I think the recipe was brilliant there with uh not only the vary of experience age gender International domestic I mean yeah this was this was great hopefully they can

Bottle it up and run it back again next year it’ll be interesting to see who invites back next year and also will Jasmine come back I know she’s not mad on the international travel but she felt that one at one go at the Barkley wasn’t enough and she had to she she felt

Something there and she need needed to come back yeah yeah well that’ll be interesting um what do you think about like I mean on a level of just fan awareness right like Barkley has everybody’s attention not much uh not much is given to the winner by way of sponsorship you

Know you go win western states or hard rock and you’ve got sponsors knocking on your door did I don’t get the same feel from the Barkley Marathon I’m not saying it needs that but it’s just kind of fascinating necessary like that as the sport is growing Barkley isn’t a launching pad

For for people that clearly have the skill set that transcends the sport at the highest level yeah well I think I think most people would agree that John Kelly kind of looks out of place in all this lasportiva Garb I mean lastor doesn’t make this the nicest looking

Gear anyway it’s good quality you know questionable color color uh color wise but he looks Odd as like the sponsored athlete there and you have people uh I I had a couple of direct messages on Instagram saying you know we’re all uh mulling over buying the latest gear uh

Each each week each month or whatever and we have these old boys rocking up with 10-year-old ultimate Direction vests and and doing five Loops at Barkley so you know we’re we’re just looking for easy ways to success and instead of just doing the work right yeah yeah totally and like Richard

Wilson said in the chat there maybe sponsorship would actually hurt your chances of getting invited right La probably might be the uh you know he he’s the one that’s not looking for the guy that’s got the Polish uh the Charisma so yeah I mean it’s fine the event exists anyways but just kind

Of fascinating to see that a brand hasn’t attempted to try and penetrate the Barkley and you know syn their uh corporate marketing hooks into uh some of these athletes that are incredible I just love that we have all of this talk about live streams and recap shows and professionalizing the sport and then

Barkley has gone backwards so we you you know it takes until about Loop 3 before we even know the names of people you know right non descript guy guy in flamboy in shorts uh small European Woman these are just amazing like never change Barkley right what

Does the chat think do we ever want Barkley to change what do you think I don’t think so I don’t think so this was hilarious this year with the aliases and having to do internet sleuthing and piece together different cryptic posts from people and obscure pictures and

Then you know bouncing ideas off your buddy and then you know finally Loop two or three you confirm like yeah okay they’re in they’re they’re there like that’s yeah that’s wild it’s it’s good to have one event like this and I don’t want them all to be like this but one’s

Good that that’s true we we wouldn’t want to be reporting something like this every month and uh Nadine saying in the chat that the Jasmine’s Wikipedia page is already been updated she’s a parkle finisher know you can you can pre-schedule post to go out maybe she prescheduled her Wiki like that’s some

Confidence if she already had the update to her Wiki planned and then her friend just hit sand once it was official that reminds me on John Kelly scheduling the tweets one year was it last year that’s what it was that that was that was that was that was a

Stroke of Genius that that was brilliant um absolutely what else have we got in in the chat here there’s uh liono well welcome good to see you and Simon hod yes a dedicated Trail talk audience is is chiming in in the chat yes John Kelly schedule tweets uh was a

Was definitely a stroke of Genius uh no content yet coming through from the course uh with um or no videos but I see Keith has just 21 seconds ago so hit refresh everyone there’s a picture of the finishers at the gate and uh all miles and not anyone in sponsored gear

Or John Kelly and on that sponsorship note Jasmine uh was sponsored by innovate and I believe she broke away from innovate because she just she didn’t feel the need to have the small amount that they were that they were paying and if it’s a small Lake District

Company she didn’t need the the the new season gear and she’s a she’s a working uh Farm vet so she’s already got a well- paid job and she just saw it as I don’t need this so why bother you know yeah she didn’t want or seek the Kudos or the

Limelight of being a sponsored professional athlete because she has a has a day job yeah yeah yeah exactly and I think that uh is probably a through line with most of the uh contestants at Barkley and certainly the Finish the ones that at least immediately come to mind is

Even if they have sponsors it’s not something that they’re seeking any level of Fame other than just the support for the gear and you know maybe they like participating with product development and things like that from a engineering type of you know mindset so yeah that doesn’t surprise me at all yeah so

Sharon in the chat is asking for a rund down of the finisher so we’ll run we’ll run through that we had ehor berries coming through and at 44 then John Kelly in 5915 Jared Campbell in 5930 Greg Hamilton the Kiwi on his third attempt in 5938 and then Jasmine Paris on her third

Attempt in 5958 and 21 bloody seconds Bravo what a what a performance uh I I you know even at the Fun Run uh Jasmine was on a sit down BBC breakfast show uh in the UK and I think it I think it made its way around uh various

Syndications but I mean what’s going to happen uh n she’s the first ever woman to finish the Barkley this is going to blow up this is going to be from page stories everywhere tomorrow right I think so yeah yeah I think she might she’ll probably have a crowd waiting for

Her when she lands back you know our hometown’s going to just have a a Heroes parade I would imagine so um I can’t wait to see what uh what comes in all the uh the pictures and all the socials and good wishes and stuff so it might be

Controversial but I’m kind of glad that maybe uh it was an international woman that won it first I feel like uh maybe the hometown and you know that Hero’s welcome is something that will be special and well well remembered and embraced back there yeah uh Jasmine is from Edinburgh

Where she lives with her husband Conrad Ric who is also an absolute stud of a fail Runner very same type of uh style of running head down self-navigated self-supported I remember he arrived in Ireland uh to support Jasmine when she was doing a round of the British f f

Rman championships and he decided the day after the race what’s this uh Irish F running the Dennis ranking round I’ll give that a go he threw his name into the Hat registered for it you had to do it 24 hours before went out with a couple of Flapjacks and set the new

Record which was a 90k r by the way 90k R ran it and something like I think it was like 14 hours or something so uh they have pedigree they’re going to have super fast mountainous children it’s be exciting times ahead this is evolution folks this is what we’re this is what

We’re dealing with as right and Simon saying in the chat there that yeah Jasmine has no problem wearing wearing inovate gear she likes the gear she uses the gear but she just didn’t feel the need to you know continue as a as a pro athlete and right so let’s just throw a

A question right there to the chat and also to you Brian how does LZ make this harder next year oh that’s a great question right because I know l wants to be or I assume if if LZ is you know authentic which he you know gives no nothing but

Indications that he is he’s not going to do anything artificial right he’s not going to do something silly you know like a miniature golf course put a windmill in in on course right so he’s gonna go back and probably Scout it maybe look for areas I’m sure he knows

Where he can probably tighten it up a little bit make it a little bit more difficult I mean I don’t know I mean the whole thing’s a mystery I don’t even know what the courses look like in the past so we’re just spitballing here on

How he can adapt the course to uh to the increased uh capabilities of the participants you know I think a lot has to maybe do with the start time I think there was more of a uh you know conventional Stark time what was it like five five in the morning right local was

It somewhere around there or six in the morning local 5:17 a.m. yeah yeah I mean maybe there’s some analytics there that say a start time somewhere in you know the middle of the morning or you know again maybe it’s weather dependent on how he likes to start it if it’s cold

Foggy and wet he likes to let him go right in the middle of the morning right or in the dark of the morning so I think he just kind of figures out what he wants to do with the route the book placement and then decides with what the

Weather projections are going to be for uh when the the start time is I mean what do you think right I mean how do you make it harder when you’re the only one that really knows that course as good as he does I i’ I’ve got a few

Ideas which I I’ll I’ll I’ll throw out here but uh in the chat please let us let us know the best way you think to make this uh make the course harder he’s got a couple of options now we’re hearing that very like a lot of

The course has already been used or a lot of the SE park has already been used so one way to make it harder is it needs to be a either a route that has more vert so he’s going to have to include more vert per Loop which is going to

Extend the loop time it’s not having to extend the time of five Loops you only has to make one or two changes to add you know a th000 meters of more climbing is probably uh an R more per Loop that’s going to put this bit you know a lot

Harder it’s going to make it more weather dependent on whether it’s even it’s even possible and then obviously the the very simple one is make it longer but longer needs more course whereas more vert just requires a couple of extra Hills Which is less kind of real estate in the park

So those are a couple of options what what do you think of those yeah I mean exactly I like the more vert um don’t necessarily know if I like the length one um but again I don’t know exactly what the options are what what I don’t know

What the range is of what he has to work with off of different years like uh what’s a low vert year versus his previously hivert year with a short distance Loop versus a longer like he he’s got to know all of that in his you

Know mad scientist mind or on his uh on his notepad um but yeah I like going that direction rather than doing something a bit wonky with like you know burying the book in some obscure way or you know removing one water cache on there so um yeah freezing the water

Intentionally so it just adds a me I think he wants to maybe mentally mess with these guys more than just change the the vert and distant profile so maybe there’s something in there he can do to get some more mental s Warfare in there for him yeah well that’s that’s interesting

But the very nature that it’s 60 hours long that La doesn’t need to directly mess with your head because sleep deprivation is going to do that for you but if we look at these finishers like ehore didn’t look too tired at all he’s looked fresh the whole time so

Are we just getting to a point that we have athletes that have this insane ability to um work sleep de deprived I think eor didn’t get the note that you come to the gate looking deprived even if you’re Faking It I think that’s like John Kelly and these

Other guys right like even if they feel fresh they know I’m not going to sit here and give LZ any reason to think that he needs to do something to rat ratchet up the difficulty but Eagle just like I think there’s a lot of people that are probably not Eagle fans right

Now with the uh out of six Loop comment and the smirk as he touched the gate because you’re right I think he’s just unleashed the Kraken and LZ is going to go Hellbound next year with what they have to face that’s just my thoughts right like you can’t taunt the you can’t

Taunt LZ and think that you’re going to get away with it yeah I people are going to going to pay for that for that smug face I think we’re going to see ehor face across memes uh forever more you know right the the Instagram meme creators are going to

Be going to be all over this uh we had credit card in the chat saying no polls would make it harder yes it it certainly would make it harder but that the that’s not a realistic option um right you know po po poles are poles they’re part of

This the sport I think we’re we’re past the days of calling them wizard sticks and and cheat cheat sticks and and all this type of thing yeah there’s another another comment in here that was interesting about how many books La adds so the number of books that you have to

Find each loop I guess change is from year to year so I guess that’s another variable that requires more you know mental awareness to know how many books you’re on and again more route finding to go from book to book so again this this this event just continues to have

More more more and more obstacles that that pop up whe that aren’t just the weather that changes how fast you can actually Traverse the the distance invert on that given year yeah that that that actually is a great point I I think adding in another checkpoint that people have to navigate

To potentially Tex two boxes because you have the ability to add distance vert and navigation all by just adding one extra book to find so that is a a very good option uh no no doubt LZ is probably thinking about these things already again right there’s weather there’s course

Changes and there’s also is it is it daytime or nighttime I think we would probably all agree that a four or fifth Loop in the dark would have been much harder and potentially unachievable you know if this final Loop had have been in the dark we wouldn’t have had uh Jasmine

Finishing and taking that um historic first lady finisher title right yeah definitely so I think again we’re all going to see Barkley return back to its normal statistics in the next couple years it was it was depressing to have that what five six seven year run of no finishers um or one

Finisher over a 10year period or whatever the stats were I mean that was a rough decade to be a fan in a participant to Barkley um and that’s when it earned its name a race that eats its own now you know you could say eagor is over here having a buffet compliments

Of the the Barkley so it’s completely flipped do you think think we’ll see uh Jam Curry come back next year I’m sure he is absolutely kicking himself that he’s not there this year because y if there’s one guy that put in the work but maybe just give up too soon it’s

Jam he was another one in the Gary vein that I was thinking would be thinking man if only I stuck it out to see this type of course and and entrance list and weather would this have been the year but uh yeah I mean he seems like he’s

Got a hands full with AA Viper right now and I don’t know that he’s got the uh time to D I miss his Vlog the Steep light steep life Vlog when he was doing his Barkley vert challenge I mean that was some some of the best media we saw

Uh I think in in trail running so I miss it’d be great to have him come back totally yeah it was definitely an inspiration for me back in the 2014 156 uh those sort of uh training Vlogs and things just having fun with it it was it was authentic but uh still well

Done I think that was the early blogs that sparked and got a lot of traction and interest uh globally I mean I used to Bug Jam forever whenever he didn’t drop one like when is the when is the next one coming I thought I was the only

One that was that was definitely me as well that intro that intro theme song was golden I mean I don’t think I’ve heard another like EDM ultr running theme song like he had I mean it it’s the best simple short Snappy it never it never uh it never grew old right

Yeah uh we had try Tracy in the chat saying they had exceptional weather that had to do had a lot to do with this but incredible talents yeah totally totally true uh trissy uh all of that great weather uh perfect mix of competitors experienced talented and uh yeah maybe

Maybe LZ blew the the conk at the wrong sort of time uh or at an easier time you know because you only have to count back I kind forward 60 hours and and he would have known that that last Loop wasn’t going to be in the dark and just for for everyone that’s

That’s listening I think the the final Loop for the for the the people who finished they only had about three hours in the dark and then about 40 minutes in uh in sort of Dawn Dawn light so that that’s early parts of the course they they would have known those bits of the

Course better than you know the the metal or the furthest furthest aspect so probably an advantage there absolutely I mean with us keeping Jasmine as the topic here what what do you think she needs to do from here to have you know some some high rankings

With her finish and Ultra Runner of the Year voting like where do you go from Barkley what type of resume do you have to put up to kind of you think keep the voters interested in your season I mean I don’t know if she’s that interested you know no I know she’s not

Right but I’m just we’re we’re we’re debating that now while it’s happening live what do you think I mean I think um if you think about sort of races that have interested her she was onetime course record holder uh of the spine the hardest race in the

World or one of the races that claims that definitely one of the very difficult winter Races course record holder there outright winner um expressed milk mid race to her newborn child I mean this is the sort of athlete we’re talking about absolutely uh in incredible um person um but I just

Flicked on looking at her um UTMB Runner page because uh that just shows us some of the races that she’s done and so 2022 she dnf UTMB she has experience from uh the matter Horn uh Ultra which is 175k and 11 half th000 meters ofart she loves these Big Mountain challenges she

Has experienced at alure mon Rosa which is said to be the hardest 100 mile Mountain race in Europe right now taken over from the onetime Andor Ultra Trail which went bust over the pandemic and then going back to her spine win in 2019 which was an 83 um R effort for 420

Kilm and know she doesn’t r that much you know she’ll do a couple of things a year so we might see something from her towards the tail end of the summer we might not you know who who knows um so fair point probably probably not going

To be ultra Runner of the year in in high ranking just because of the resume not catching any other major uh race with uh competitors what about performance of the year then it’s got to be it’s got a bit so so nothing Courtney can’t like there’s nothing if Courtney wins Hard Rock

Outright can’t over I think if Courtney wins Hard Rock she’s in Hard Rock right or no yeah she is right yeah yeah so if she wins Hard Rock outright I mean it’s Courtney like I think just on fan bias she she would still have the ability to supersede and

Pull the rug out from underneath Jasmine right I mean there’s got to be some American bias in that as well yeah of course uh so yeah uh North American Al Runner of year no doubt will be Courtney no matter what she does this year I can’t see her winning Hard Rock

Outright how how can Courtney compete with a Zach Miller and a franois Dan it’s not possible but Jasmine is in pole position for performance of the year A woman has never finished Barkley this woman has beaten the course it’s like this is this is the biggest news in

Years this isn’t the biggest news of the year unless you ask camil I still think that she thinks the six day performance she just had in linta probably as much she probably doesn’t even know this happened she’s you know camil her will be sathing at the thought that this woman has upstaged

Her six day Lululemon PR event uh course record 10an course or 10an world record um holiday uh she will absolutely hate this that this has happened but it uh it doesn’t matter what she thinks because Jasmine has done something that no man has ever done this is you know or no other woman

Has ever done this is a this is a first ever we’re not breaking a record we’re setting a record right right I 100% hands down agree that’s why Jasmine is my hero because uh she is in less than uh or just like slightly over a week’s

Time or so a manag to completely Turn the page on what we will not talk about any further so big big applaud to Jasmine of what she did and I mean I I I hope she’s not done with Barkley I’d love to see her come back and get the uh

First finish you know to I don’t know if you I mean I guess you w somebody wins the race they they touch the gate first um so yeah I would love to see her be the first finisher of the 2025 Barkley Edition that would be outstanding uh Lanny in the in the chat

Yeah of course uh what Camille did was was uh was great but Camille is a is a competitive monster and she doesn’t even like hearing that Courtney de Walter is known as the goat so I think that’s where this commentary is coming from uh no nothing but love for camale but uh

She’s a she’s competitive monster and probably the opposite personality to Jasmine who is head down un assuming grit does the does the work and the proof is in the uh 59r and what was it 5958 yeah yeah and 21 seconds uh finish I mean it’s just it’s just um

Amazing so again well done to Jasmine uh I think maybe it’s time to bring this uh to a wrap I know it’s difficult to do whenever we have 185 live yours uh anyone in the chat want to uh POS any questions for us to to tackle we’ll give you a minute to to

Come up with something um Brian what what do you think that uh Laz is going to do do you think it’s even possible to change the Barkley to an early time earlier time of the year to make sure there there’s worse worse weather less less daylight yeah yeah that’s another one

That you could do very easily so yeah I mean I yeah the Barkley sets its date and everybody moves their schedules around it so um yeah he could absolutely do that and move it ahead in the uh season and nobody that’s gonna prioritize Barkley would would scoff at

It so that would be interesting um pre- daylight savings time you know that would be a huge impact for the uh the life of the event and how how they have to tackle and rethink their strategy because I do like it’s fascinating how the strategy has changed we’ve seen it

Guys going out sub eight first loop I think everybody’s like scratch that from their their game plan now right I mean the first Loop this year was much slower in premium weather and a conventional start time so um yeah get keep these uh competitors on their toes get somebody

With a wild hair up their butt thinking they got to go back out and do something crazy in the first Loop and see how it changes the uh the uh remainder of the event that first Loop really sets the stage for it it’s fascinating yeah totally a few questions

Coming through in the chat we’ll take on those in a minute uh for everyone that is new new to the channel uh we do a couple of shows a month uh we do some live streams as well talking about races and things like fantasy free Trail hit

Subscribe hit the bell and you’ll get notified whenever we’re doing another show down in the description we also have some discounts for our show sponsors at torque nutrition there is discount through din there for 10% off and also gware the inventors and makers of gortex uh we have 30% off code in the

Description as well so make use of those um grip products and um yeah uh just scroll down to the description and certainly we would love to have you come back for for other shows uh like tackling some of these questions uh Simon hge is asking would I ever consider in the

Barkley you know the short answer to that’s no the long the longer answer to that is you know whenever people started seeing the Barkley and it came on my radar maybe around 2014 it does feed into that ultra running uh mindset of you just want to do something that’s hard and you’re

Trying to to that line of can I do it can I not do it and maybe around 2017 is I competed in the um in the National orientering Championship in Ireland and never have I done a harder event long distance navigating in the mountains at paace is incredibly difficult and to do

That for potentially 60 hours is just mindly difficult and whenever you look at the quality of the athletes that it takes to finish these people are having to put a lot of effort into it like they’re not not just having to navigate and Be steady it’s not like going out

And doing a UTMB where you just have to keep moving and you probably make it through the cut offs this is a completely different uh completely different base it takes navigating Talent sleep deprivation athletic ability experience just a combination of all of these things to to finish the

Barkway so that’s the long answer the short answer is no it’s beyond my abilities and and um of course Simon you’ll know that we’ve had a couple of Irish Runners tackle it belly raid uh one that I know very well and he didn’t do very very well at the Barkley either

And whenever I compare my belly read used to be somebody that I used to look in results and go oh belly took 19 hours I can probably do it in 19 hours and Billy I think got one looped on at Barkley so I might get a looped on um

We’re not traveling from uh from London to Tennessee for for one look so so there you go right right yeah you it’s scary if you look at just the the PE the talent of the people that have been chewed up and spit out of Barkley That’s humbling

So yeah I mean the finishers list is one thing the list of failures and the talent that’s there is why I would never step foot on the uh the Barkley start line some real studs and females that have failed at the Barkley um that I

Just am in awe of so enough said there yeah uh Charles bear in in the chat asking us if we please have a wrap-up show on Barkley Charles that’s the intention we may do this on Monday or Tuesday uh but subscribe to the channel and we will list the live stream well in

Advance of it happening we’ll do it just do it as a live show we’ll bring on multiple panelists and maybe we can bring in some uh some interviews as well from people that have been at Frozen head so that is something that we’re working on so uh please uh keep an eye

On on the channel for that we see you right round you we see you yeah so uh yeah we’re we’re hearing that there are some uh pictures appearing online under the BM 100 hashtag uh yeah we have a picture of Jasmine sitting at the drinking a can of coke at the gate

Uh yep no finer uh God of nectar of the Gods for the ultra Runner than the can of Coke right uh maybe the IPA you know the something frothy you know something with uh little ibus there to to ease the the muscle lake so Coca-Cola is good and

All but when I’m done it’s yeah let’s get that thing going yeah but have you been uh have you been reaching for an IPA after 59 hours and 58 minutes no no I haven’t I haven’t reached for anything after 59 hours and 58 minutes but maybe maybe some nice big

Magnum bottle of champagne to you know uncork like a Formula 1 Victory you know I mean some some I that’s what I would love to be a fly on the wall is uh just sitting in the park uh this evening you know you got the campfire going people

Relishing in their finishes the buzz there at that Campground with the first female finishing the event it’s got to be outrageous I mean that’s got to be you know just giving you chills to be there hanging out knowing that it’s such a closed group of individuals that’ll

Have this experience in life to be at the 2024 Barkley it’s yeah it’s so cool I saw them they were they had frozen chicken on a on a campfire I mean the the food’s probably not great right or it probably tastes as good as anything’s ever tasted after what you just been

Through so it’d be fun I’m sure somebody’s got an acoustic guitar and they’re singing so it’s a good time there I think I would love to crew at the Barkley that would be number number one for me rather rather than run it and you know whenever you’re camping like

Fried dirt tastes good you can eat anything whenever you’re sleeping you’re sleeping onto the Stars so that that frozen chicken probably tasted pretty good when it was charred up on the fire um right Charles is asking us to restate uh the the winners on their time so

We’ll run through that again from uh the five finish that we’ve had eor varies the Canadian Ukrainian on his first attempt in 58 44 and then John Kelly the local boy uh seven attempts uh three finishes his second fastest finish now in 5915 Jared Campbell on his eighth

Attempt with the fourth uh finish in 5930 so St uh Greg Hamilton on his third attempt previous fun Runner uh from New Zealand in 5938 I think that was pretty impressive and then Jasmine Paris from Scotland on her third attempt in 59 58 becoming the first female finisher

With the the clockwise final Lop so again cheers to Jasmine and uh and all the Scots it seems appropriate that we drinking beer the Scottish people will love that right and I can say that I’m Irish I’m practically you know I’m K myself cheers to that I’m empty I I

Should have brought more man I I can I got to go back to the fridge and get more I love it man we’re an hour deep into this thing already but uh the people are here making it fun it’s Barkley we got to enjoy it soak it in

Yeah yeah so uh any other questions coming through in the chat what we got here from from biggie Jam Jam needs to organize a Barky level event with his excellent media just saying I mean but would it but would it be barkly if we had a live

Stream I think the only thing I would add and I think you need to be really strict about adding stuff to this but I would like a static Cal at the gate like we could talk we could sh the fat we could you know look at times what about

A static uh live cam just at the gate so we could just see the going on proc procrastinate about about that that that would certainly Help The Help The Buzz wouldn’t it wouldn’t it wouldn’t take away from from the Barkley experience right totally agree that’s a

A fair request well it keeps the uh authenticity and history of the event still I think in the early Barkleys when I started following it they didn’t even have cell service in Frozen head yeah they they used to have to go down the street to the 7-Eleven

And that’s where they got some cell service to to upload some some tweets and things so it just shows you how far barley has even come you know it but it’s it’s small steps compared to what we’re seeing in the rest of the sport right yeah and I think it’s a

Slippery slope the minute you start adding something in I think you just you add everything in so if you bring aav Vier media into the equation it starts with a static cam at the gate and two years later you’ve got uh you know whatever the park allows within reason

Out there so I mean maybe the park has its own restrictions that would you know hamstring media from overtaking it but I feel like it would be a slippery slope the minute you put one one piece of content uh equipment out there it’s all fair game yeah so true so we are seven

Minutes past the hour uh and that means that we’re coming up 10 minutes and uh and we will be one hour since the since the end of the the Barkley another fantastic year I think one of the most exciting years in recent history I mean

We have to go back to the to the field Gary Robins attempt where there was where there was so much drama but also heartbreak uh you know but this one has ended in Joy right I agree yeah I think now that we’ve had enough time

Uh to to to go back and kind of dissect the Gary situation I kind of wish we never had the the film you know I kind of wish that the event never got that big that Ginger Runner was never out there doing the documentary he might

Have been able to not take as much trapnel mentally from having that film and having to tour it and relive it endlessly right like if he just would have had that where we all just didn’t see and know what happened and be on 247 loop with the news for you know know a

Couple weeks like I think that would have been a more fair treatment of uh the experience so yeah I’ll take I’ll take no media and let these guys go out there and these gals and battle it out and I mean what we had today was amazing it was just this uh organic experience

Where the chat let us know that Jasmine did it like uh I’ll take that hands down all day over you know something similar to cocona live feed yeah that that’s a great Point actually I’ve never thought about that it it could have been the the the media

Tour which lasted about a year with that with that movie that could have been what’s what put Gary over the edge we just had to relive that heartbreak and I mean you would just he never started off for that yeah he never asked for that it was something that just happened kind of

With his friendship with Ethan and Ethan being a content creator and it it it happened it was a unfortunate accident of circumstances so yeah it’s too bad uh so we have Kev asking about the the names of the runners and the times the two that didn’t finish so I think you

Must be talking about Damian Hall uh the English man on his second attempt he actually finished the fifth Loop but from the wrong direction so he made a nav error and therefore was um uh tapped out so unlucky DMO but we we did think that this might happen that uh maybe

Navigation wasn’t going to be his his strong suit whenever he was he was going on his own and then the second one was Sebastian uh Ron the French man on his first attempt and uh yeah unfortunate for him but uh let’s just also point out he was a firsttime uh Barkley uh runner

And he got all to the fifth Lop so that in itself is on many other years would have been a great result so they’re saying that uh he did not finish the wrong direction so maybe some uh some controversy Brewing on what the actual Logistics were did he take

Quitters row or was it a genuine finish from the wrong direction I had a tweet one hour ago so that would have been 7 minutes before the cut off uh Damen Hall came in from the wrong direction ction after not completing so that’s that’s what we have

Um from I might be interpreting here he might be paraphrasing I think that’s what he’s doing he’s saying he did not finish wrong direction as a paraphrase of what you’re saying I think so good yeah we got it okay and uh Sebastian all we know is that he did not finish uh

Loop five so he’s either run out of time and and come back or or he’s quit out on the course and and been brought back but we don’t know details of that yeah and B biggie Johnson there love the question that’s something we bounce around and

Chew on a lot at the the trail talk show um with the normal panel so definitely tune in if you want to hear our takes on trail running its growth and how we like to see it my short answer from the professional side I all I’m all in on

Growth you know I want to see the professionals continue to to build out a professional circuit uh continue to be able to tune in as a fan with with better coverage of these major events at UTMB Western States uh you know Golden Trail series UTM all of these series I want to see

Them professionalize and build out um events like Barkley though I don’t consider that kind of a traditional Professional Event so that’s one where I want to keep it classic traditional and uh as a amateur myself I don’t need anything from the sport it’s doing everything it needs to so I’m just

Focused on uh making sure the pros um you know continue to build out a better lifestyle for themselves and I can selfishly live vicariously through the live feeds and their amazing results that’s it I mean ultimately uh Brian you and I are are super fans of

The sport you guys in the chat you guys are are fans of the sport fans of Barkley that’s why we’re all here that’s why we have the trail talk show because we just love shooting the [ __ ] on this sport that we love and we want to see uh

Great things from it uh Charles saying what is the second biggest trail run um I’m not sure I understand the question do you have a take on that Brian or do we need more clarity yeah more clarity right I he’s just saying what’s the second biggest event it has got to be

UTMB week and Shaman any of the events but the major one that circumnavigates would be what I would consider to be the biggest trail event not the second biggest Barkley is is not the biggest not the biggest TR R I would I would say

It might be the the hardest uh I it can we even call it a trail run it’s uh it’s off off Trail it’s orientering it’s uh it’s ultra running I think we can say yes it’s ultra running we can say it’s uh not orientering as a sport but it it

Involves navigation which tra trail running generally doesn’t because it’s Mark courses there’s no trail run trail there’s no Trail is where you also have to navigate so Barkley is very unique in that sense and I’m I’m totally with you there we want it to stay unique we love

It for what it is and uh I’m I’m going to write a a strongly worded letter to see if we get a webcam at the yellow gate for next year there you go I love it just just send send send the cam too so there’s no

Uh no reason not to to have the the piece of uh equipment there I we’re going to uh wrap it up in a few minutes so uh any other questions get them in I think it’s going to be Timely if we if we close the stream at 17 minutes past

They are in line with the Barkley cut off one hour ago uh we appreciate everyone joining the chat we appreciate you joining the five uh streams in total it’s been a fun few days we will be doing these live streams for other races not just the Barkley so hit subscribe

Hit the notification Bell uh hit us up on Instagram as well at iron of mountains we have broadcast channel where we pose questions to the community and then talk about them in the show on this particular uh barkle show this final Loop show we asked the questions

Of uh first finisher will be in 46 or 56 uh 57 58 or 59 hours and the majority come up with 57 hours so the majority were wrong and we also asked the question which we haven’t talked about yet will Jasmine beat the clock and the overwhelming majority said yes and she

Bloody well did she did it go go Jasmine uh so you know I think it’s a Friday night we’re all feeling good we’ve had a we’ve had an IA we’ve we’ve cheers Jasmine as the first female finisher of the Barkley beaten the course and I

Think that’s a a great way to to wrap it up Ryan what do you think that’s it if I had a bugle I’d be playing it right now let’s just send this live stream off in uh Barkley uh in Barkley status right in good tradition and style so thanks

Everybody for tuning in you guys have been great it’s been fun hopefully we see you over at Trail talk all right everybody I appreciate you Brian see you next time peace everybody absolutely

  1. Igor ferris , the Ukrainian from Canada , wins the Barkley marathon 2024 in a time of 58:44 .
five finished , including Jasmin Paris from England , who became the first female to ever finish the Barkley marathon .

  2. Thank you for the debriefs. I wonder if next year Laz will duct tape the books to wildlife roaming in the park? 😊 20 finishers and 8 the past 2 years, interesting.
