Cameron selton lost for the spring is a disappointing player to not have out there the rest of the way yeah for sure man I mean I remember him coming out of high school uh playing multiple positions his athleticism jumped off the video off the page when you looked at
His measurables and when you watched his highlight film uh knew he needed to get some some valuable reps got it got some late in the season uh still need to continue to learn how to run run with the pad level needed to play running back inside of the SEC and this is not
The best injury to have as a running back where you’re using your shoulder every single play whether you’re initiating contact or someone else is initiating the contact and you’re trying to uh break tackles so uh I don’t anticipate him being back for for a while uh that showed the injury um what
Does that mean for the depth of the running back room what does it mean for this coaching staff do they go out and look for other options uh in the transfer portal because I told you we haven’t had a lot of conversations recently about football because of the
Run that basketball has been on but uh the running back room for me it’s it’s questionable because of what you are losing in Jaylen Wright who could be the first back off the board what you’re losing in Jabari small that um was steady was a bail cow
Force was reliable uh battle injuries um didn’t put the ball on the ground did a good job of Blitz pickup always falling forward can make guys miss you lost two veteran backs in one year and now you have to replace those two Dylan Samson slides in as a number one guy a position
That he’s never played before being the number one guy entering the season he’s gotten hot during the game and became the number one back after the fact but going into the season being the number one guy um that’s a new position for him new responsibility and he’s doing a good
Job so far um but this is the off season what happens during during the regular season so you got deshan Bishop coming back from significant injury but the room the running back room is a room that looks different than every other room with this Tennessee football team there’s five stars line backer room
Defensive line room offensive line room quarterback receiver there’s not any in the running back room it’s different it looks different so these guys have a lot to prove and there’s questions yeah don’t we always say man you just never know with running backs you almost have to anticipate there will be some
Injuries you deal with during the season doesn’t the situation right now show that and offer the reminder ahead of the spring portal season coming up I think Tennessee has to at least look and see what might be out there to see if you can bring someone someone in that has
Played that could compete because pton Lewis is a big- Time talent that they like a lot they love him but he’s a complete unknown they love him yeah they love him but they love cam s too last year too sure yeah yeah this is not a question about their talent or ability
Uh part of it is they still have to prove what they can do in the SEC but also the anticipation that they could deal with injury you want to make sure you have Dylan Samson all season long so him having help along the way is going
To be important if if he has less players available behind him that’s more that is asked of Dylan Samson which is probably asking too much if you extend that out over a period of time because Jaylen Wright had Jabari small and Dylan Samson all sees it they were fairly
Fortunate right but they also probably experienced some of that fortune because they were able to split things up if more were asked of Jaylen Wright all along the way then he probably gets hurt somewhere along the way and that’s just how it goes with that position yeah so my eyes are on the
Running back room I mean if I’m a running back in this room and I hear me saying what I’m saying you know I take it as motivation you can take it as disrespect if you want to and use it to channel uh whatever you need to but this
Room doesn’t look like last year’s room this room doesn’t look like the room two years ago and so there’s inexperience and now you have an injury with a guy who was inexperienced now you have a guy that’s coming in that’s even more inexperienced than an inexperienced guy and so like there’s
There’s a lot of questions but hey man use it as motivation um but at the same time like it is what it is like there’s there’s there’s a bigger question now with the running back room because cam selton is going to be out for a good
Chunk of the time and a guy like Dylan Samson who is an established player you you you want to be able to say all right man we going to back off of some these reps in spring because we know what you can do we want to see what the other
Guys can do but you don’t you don’t you might not have the guys because of the injury to cam Seldon so it’s going to be Khalifa getting a lot of reps pyton Lewis um Deshawn bisser getting a lot of reps it can be very very valuable for
Him but only time will tell yeah Deshawn Bishop was a guy that really impressed them last spring with what he’s able to do he’s a terrific athlete we saw what he did at KS and it’s unfortunate that he suffered the injury to not be a part of the team physically uh during the
Fall so he’ll get those reps we’ll see if he can earn some kind of opportunity heading into August because they’re just so many guys available right now yeah with any player it doesn’t matter what position they play or where where they’re from I know you know we love our
Local players we’ve seen the uh T Higgins and the Amar Rogers and the you know K Mays leave we’ve seen uh you know Harrison Smith leave even though like he always was going to go to nor Dame we’ve seen Rand cob go to Kentucky like we’ve SE really good players leave Brandon
Warren leave and we never want that to happen um I get that but it doesn’t matter if you he from somewhere else I’m always going to look at an athlete in Wonder All right what can he really do when we’re not beating out Georgia Florida Alabama LSU
Auburn the top recruiting teams in SEC for those players and quite frankly we didn’t have to beat out those teams for Deshawn Bishop now that doesn’t mean he can’t be a great player we’ve seen many of times where you know we get you know diamonds

One way you turn the other way or you come out a little bit flat when you should be taking it you know more up field like the the receiver that has the best ability to connect with his quarterback from a communication standpoint will be I think in the best
Position to get most of the Reps uh and more balls dur during the season so if you’re a receiver and you’ve been here multiple years and you’re s off spoken and you don’t want to communicate then watch somebody else take your spot unless you’re going to go
Out there and make Marvin Harrison Jr plays every every practice uh but you got to be able to talk and get on the same page with a quarterback who’s making his debut as as starting quarterback so it’s different than having Casey Clawson as your quarterback or having an established quarterback
Come in and you’re a young player you don’t really have to do a lot of talking you just go out there and make plays and the ball’s going to come your way because that quarterback trust you but when he’s new and you are trying to be
On the same page with him both of you guys have to talk and communicate so that’s very very important extremely mature is how Josh hyle described the way that Nico operated in practice today Nico has been well Nico has operated in mature fashion the moment this staff made contact with him he’s
Handled his recruitment um in a mature fashion he’s handled being red shirted in a mature fashion he is the high prize recruit that everybody wanted but had to wait behind Joe and kept quiet um he’s handled everything mature so no surprise that he’s doing the same thing
Now but it is his his show and he understands how important it is for himself to lead in the right way you know saying the right things doing the right things uh everyone knows you get special treatment but you can’t move like you get special treatment you have
To move like you’re one of the guys and when you do that um they will latch on to you a whole lot more a whole lot easier and Nico is a really easy guy to follow like super super charismatic um strong leadership skill so yeah like he’s mature
He’s a guy that can come in as a restar freshman and Lead players that are fifth and sixth year players in college like they’ll follow him because of his maturity level yeah we talked recently about okay you have guys that are coming in you have just the the new age of nil
Opportunities and that can create rewards before results are shown out there on the field yeah but the way that Nico operates and we’re not talking about on the field running an offense has to help in that if you’re looking for that position to lead the quarterback and you’re talking about a
Young guy who is unproven largely he had a really nice game in the Citrus Bowl but he he’s unproven yeah he’s unproven the fact that he carries himself the way that he does and works the way that he does is pretty much all you’re asking
For from him before he can go out there and prove what he can do well you got to have your best players working the hardest you also need your best players to be coached the hardest too which you know in this case you’re not
Going to get on to him like we saw Rick Barnes get on to Grant Williams stuff like that when when those guys were here but like you just want Nico to come across as he’s one of the hardest working guys and you don’t need him to fake it but like you just need
Your best players you need your quarterbacks to be your hardest workers the guys who are uh held accountable just like everybody else and when you get that man it’s really easy to coach everybody it’s really easy to have a player L team rather than a coach Le
Team and I think that’s what this team needs more of is is players on the inside holding each other accountable quickly we were asked in the text box are there any receivers or defensive backs that can move to running back and then we were asked in a separate text
Specifically about bu Carter but bu Carter’s working on defense he will have an opportunity with the ball in his hands as a Return Man in special teams but who Carter is competing to try to be a starter most likely at Star I would say in the defensive backfield yeah the
Answers to the running back depth is not in my opinion in the building so meaning at other other positions yeah yeah it’s not it’s not in the building like it’s hard to get bu Carter on offense period let alone playing a position like running back I
Mean bu Carter is a perimeter player B Carter is a receiver playing safety or playing DB in my opinion uh we’ll see how it plays out and he he’s going to be a good play regardless for us and you know maybe if you get some movement at the receiver position after the spring
