At that stage when Captain’s Ransom was winning everything susette and BOS they couldn’t really understand this feeling because they were new into the game and uh you know they had this horse winning everything so I remember they telling meone this is like I’m not sure how I should be

Feeling right now because I’m I’m not sure what this is all you know what this F actually achieved and I said well can guarantee you next 10 years you probably won’t see another one like this coming Around welcome to another edition of In The Box seat podcast with Andrew Harris and myself Warren Ferno now today’s guest you know and and the guests just keep getting better and better all our guests are valued and and just loved and are wonderful to be on our podcast but

The fact I just want to explain to the public that the fact that Andrew Harrison’s car drove past summerfelt to come to Hollywood bets graville where we’re recording the podcast this week shows how special Our Guest is because I asked him to come and visit me come and

Visit the office at Hollywood best graville and he just insults me but he’s here he’s here at Hollywood B graville because our guest today is bang in form red hot Richard V Richard how are you I’m very well how are you I’m here yes it’s

Lovely to to be with uh Richard and and lovely to have you in town I hope you’re going to stay and watch a few races and have some lunch I even had a haircut 30 shampoo prizes going up right we here to talk about rich and

We just thought it was a you know it’s hard to out of town is to get them in at this at the right time but uh we recording on Wednesday morning of the race meeting uh so let’s go straight into things Richard how did you hear about the South African jockey Academy

All those years ago uh and and who introduced you to the academy where did you hear about it well I was little still am and uh you my older half brother always said now I’ll become a jocky and H you know it was Miles Away from what I

Really wanted to do and um one day came home from high school one of my Playmates those days uh Jo Yer um his uncle um had horses or was involved in horse racing be it uh tipping or bet betting on horses or owning sheares in

Horses um so I had no idea what it was and um uh he said no well I want to introduce you to my uncle Corey Cory yuster and I said okay well you know let’s go and I had a look and uh he looked at me he said no boy you should

Be a jockey so you know that’s where it all all started and had a meeting uh in Johannesburg at tontin with one of the riding Masters and obviously it was quite late in the year it was like November um and you know checked your Su size your height you know your age that

Sort of thing and he’s like well you’re the perfect candidate but unfortunately you’re a little bit late um you know they’ve already taken their 2001 2002 intake so I was like okay no problem and didn’t think too much of it went back to school normal thing and uh 3 weeks into

The into that year um being at school uh in Dr Milan Janis spurg um I got home in the afternoon and there he was waiting in his car he says boy we got to go they want you in the academy so it was um a very rough introduction to it because I

Wasn’t mentally prepared for it and uh you know you join the academy you don’t see your family for that year that’s just how it was it was there to make you hard you know you go to the cademy you lose all contact with your family for quite some time um and

You know I’ve seen the kids get homesick and you know they they leave but uh the tough ones stick around and it was a lot tougher in those days I mean I don’t think there were cell phones were around in those days no I think the no 3210 came

Out unwind the exactly a brick you throw yeah and um I remember at the Academy there was a a a telephone a pay phone you had to buy those cards 20 R card that’s right yeah exactly and um you know when you first arrive you you got

To go with the system you know and um fit in or go home you know so it was tough because I I didn’t I wasn’t ready for it and um just you know threw myself out there went back for another interview at the Academy and uh they gave me two weeks

And I said they let me know in two weeks if I’m if I’m I’m going to make it or not and I’m still waiting for them to tell me so if I if I can be there but Richard to to look back at those days that you just explained and as I

Say I’ve known you’ve known Richard probably well you’ve been in racing longer than me so you’ve followed his career from the beginning but I’ve had the privilege of knowing him too for a long time and we’re going to talk about the good old Bloom fantaine trips just

Now you look back at those days and you look back you’re not an arrogant person you are humble so I’m saying it with respect you must see yourself where you are today and look back to that particular day and must think well of not knowing a thing about a horse not

Knowing about the academy and look back at where you are now you must think damn I was lucky to get that Gap or to find out about the academy because what a career you’ve had so far yeah I’m very blessed I’ve ritten some really really good resources

And yeah God lucky but you must have shown Talent from the beginning I mean was was your third or fifth ride I think you had your first win yeah my fifth ride on groovy baby wasab yeah Mexican Fighter for Mr L was my first ride and

Um yeah I just had the right writing master I think you know Mr Curtis he was tops he was V was good he was hard on me um hard on everybody yeah exactly but with all uh for for the good of it for for the good of racing um he was he saw

That I had some sense of ability and um he made me better yeah I think he was a good writing master in that he he put you under pressure and if you came through it you knew you were going to make it if you weren’t going to make it

He was going to dump you straight you know the the Academy South afcan Dr Academy have had and still have you know very good riding Masters but we know that Richard is very close to Vincent Curtis still to the St close friend of yours and no he’s not my friend he’s

Still my writing mon okay if i r a bad race I promise you he’s the first guy to comment I value his comment but yeah he’s a very good friend and but in the academy at that time there was muy oh muy Gavin Raymond Danielson Keenan Stein Keenan Stein yeah Dar Lang

Yeah he’s before our years yeah the ones in my so you had you had a good uh yeah there was 15 of us in the start and five of us remaining so it’s not bad 33% Gary Rich was uh one of the team members at the Academy in Richard’s ER

In Richard’s time too and that broom race course was still open and and you know those trips up to bloom Fantine racing with the you know with them was was just another part of of of what made you and and the rest of the guys to the

The slog of getting all the way to bloom Fant and going to ride and did you drive the bus no I just went to go andoy the horse racing that’s why they’re still alive that’s why they’re still alive absolutely Richard just quickly touch on your your kids you’ve got two beautiful

Kids and must three kids okay three kids all girls all girls okay okay um and and the weddings let’s wait on that yeah yeah there’s no rush like but family life kids uh you know it’s with you traveling a lot I’m sure they’re understanding and they must love watching you boot home

The winners yeah look it’s not easy uh obviously youve been divorced um but uh kids are good they getting old um doing well at school and the extra mural so that’s that’s what you want you want them to achieve in their own capacities and what what they their

Interests are so yeah can only support them as much as we can and uh they I don’t think they watch a lot of racing but they do know I’m very busy and I’m busy Chasing The Impossible Target of 334 I was just looking at that they’ve got a

Barometer on D talk you’re at 140 something now ah who knows this game you haven’t had a suspension this year oh thank tou let’s keep where 30 brilliant going I mean you ride every race meeting in the country you haven’t had a suspension if I do get a little bit tired I rather

Take that day off because you need to be yeah on your aame focus all the time how do you handle I mean all the traveling um I’ve set up a very good schedule um whereas in p uh Caba I’ve got a a driver so when I land I’m I don’t have to worry

About cars and lifts and stuff I’ve got a driver that picks me me up and some of the other jocks as well um in Durban I’ve got Gavin good mate he he’s there for me 100% he’s my driver yeah um I’ve Got a Car year so it makes it easy so I

Don’t have to drive on them yeah and then obviously jber same thing I’ve got Gavin I’ve got my uncle where do you stays no no no no that’s too tiring too noisy uh stay with family and friends and keep it keep it would you say when traveling you stay

Stay with family but your home your your house is in Cape Town live in Cape Town so any time I drive is in Cape Town can you drive in Cape Town traffic is horendous I live out of town and when he’s got to go to work and after work

You know you missed that but you’re right the traffic has gotos way let’s quickly talk about the the 33 um 4 334 is it 334 yeah 334 um and some people when I spoke to them and the lead up to this podcast they said uh ah leave it

Don’t talk to him about you know don’t put them under pressure I said are you joking I said there no pressure is what you put in car tires and I said secondly it’s it’s it’s what’s bringing the racing alive you know so of course we’re going to talk about it

But did at any stage did you think okay well I’m not going to I’m just going to do my best if it happens it happens or if but and then you said no well Hang on we’re having a full go well my season goal before anything was mentioned was I

Wanted to ride 300 winners you know so started the season that was the focus obviously I took some two weeks off just to recover and I had a suspension to serve um but the goal was 300 and then obviously the article came out there’s a million random up grabs for the guy that

Can beat uh an think Del P’s record which you know wasn’t anything that I was looking at or um to try at but some up the stakes but yeah exactly so you start your season it gets slow you start picking up picking up and you know things start falling into place and um

You know as the support chain grows and you build relationships with the trainers and the owners um it started looking a little bit more promising so it was like playing golf for argument sakes you know you’ve got I don’t know how golf works these 19 holes or 18

Holes that you go to play and you have to hit to get pause you’re going to get that sort of stroke so it starts working when you’re having a couple birdies and it gets easier at the end so the idea is while things are running smoothly is to

Be above the number so yes the predicted number is 240 right now but the rain is still coming um gon gets gold it gets uh we lose meetings it’s going to start raining here on April too um so Champion season here that the competition comes a bit

Tougher yeah well I’m bringing the the horses too so I’m coming with with the calvary so um yeah you say it gets stuff it does but um you know you want to be riding those good horses so what I’ve tried to project is to get closer to

That number now than trying to get to the number for the last bit exactly so yeah it’s going good I’m I’m not complaining um my mission is still 300 and uh if I can get that I’ll be more than golf don’t lose your swing the under exactly yeah stay fresh and stay

Focused yeah it certainly is it’s it’s it’s exciting it’s it’s something that we all enjoying in as racing lovers and yeah going to be something to write about which is nice and we wish you all the best Richard we we wish you all the best and and it’s it’s must be a feather

You know gives you a nice confidence boost when you know everyone’s behind you and and I’m I think he can certainly achieve it and and well way going now the funniest thing is that the Hollywood put up that I mean they so ahead of the schedule that they all these

Competitions and centers Etc and then cuz you weren’t riding a lot for Hollywood at that stage when they put up the incentive and then as time ticked on I mean Richard’s getting a lot of his winers from Hollywood you know which so which is which is interesting because

They’re the ones that are putting up the prize and they’re helping him absolutely which is so wonderful well if you winning on their horses all the time that the steak money pays for your for your customers everywhere you must have an agent you talk about planning and an agent good

Agent very good Agent okay K Nicholl is oh he’s the best yeah there there’s no one like him uh the amount of work that that he does um you know he does all my all my traveling so basically everywhere I race he’s doing the Noms he does

Everything it’s you know when L and them were winning it I think they had a guy in jobic and the guy yeah so you know that gu split up and doing the focus so I must say Well done to Ken for being able to but he wasn’t he was a jocking

Club handicapper so you should know the secrets of the game I know K well from from c town he’s a good man you know when you watch certain Sports I want to talk about your riding style because there was a an interview done here the other day when you rode Tenny Prince’s horse

Sting Ray well my my new tablets must be working my memories I haven’t missed a beat with my memory job you better give me some so you wrote Sting Ray and and the interviewer of maybe it was my colleague or rahil or whoever it was or

De and I think he said your writing style at times might not be easy on the eye uh you know he said it not criticizing he said it as an observation and you replied whatever you’ve got to do you said I sit a little longer and

Whatever you’ve got to do to get that horse over the line you do it that’s really stuck in my mind because what I’m trying to get at is how did you develop that style because you don’t do that every Rod but you know you know to do

Certain things at certain times when I mean even at that ride and I’m going to compliment him because if you’re a rugby fan and somebody scored a laer try you know you said geez that was a good try or that was a good goal you know that

Was a great ride and and you even managed to change your stick once all that was going on the bouncing the pushing the and there 50 m you still managed to get your stick across I mean how did you develop that style because my oh my it’s it’s it’s unbelievable

It’s the Richard free drive that’s what everyone calls it well I just do whatever it takes to get those home so everything changes um I think it’s over time uh Jock’s developed skills um experience I think is one of those things um a lot of practice when you

Race a lot you learn a lot um you pick up things uh you see more quicker um so yeah basically it’s just from um experience um an exposure so the the more you race the easier it gets because you practicing something so lots and lots of hours of practice okay makes

You better yeah what I’ve noticed is when you come back for your interviews you give a lot of feedback on the horse I think it’s important important that’s important it is important which I’ve noticed a lot of joks don’t but I mean you can you say well I got squeezed out of

The pens and they went too fast I got squashed out and all that other the horse runs on which I find I mean all the top jcks can give a valuable feedback to to trainers whether they run first or they run last they can assessment and feedback yeah yeah yeah I

Think it’s just over time I I don’t think in the beginning of my career I was like this at all probably had no idea what was going on um but uh yeah I just think the more you race the the the easier it becomes but you rest in Hong

Kong I mean I mean that’s a bit of a privilege these days and you had 34 winners there no had more 34 and another were you injured I went yeah I went again had another six 40 and then I got injured I got bucked off coming out the pens on a

On a griffin which is juvenile so oh okay had a bad fall pulled all the muscles between my Lumbers and my my contract was also coming to an end and it was a very very tough season that Year Joe morero Dy oh yeah Zack Burton and then a lot of

Frenches a lot of the English jocks so and the Susa was there as well so it was a really really really strong year that year so but strong waiting room but they must have t must have taught you a lot though uh I can’t comment on that talking about com talking about

Comments and interviews you mentioning I know chatting to one of the other present to correct me if I’m wrong down in the cape I think it is uh are you superstitious or or do you because some what’s the word I’m looking for sometimes to some js are a bit they want

To give comments but they little they rather talk after the race Sean V’s another one says leave me you know come and ask me Etc but he’s a little superstitious I know there’s a lot of trainers that are like that too but you also don’t want to get asked silly

Questions and that type of thing but the feedback is valuable for the trainer the owner on on the horse obviously and then comments because I mean the whole world’s following you so it’s difficult where you you know you got a to find the time to go through all the rides and

Things but it’s it’s yeah for me the interview is an integral part as he said for feedback for future information etc etc and you must sometimes get the question out when you’re busy when you’re busy and and and you you aggra ated and you may be sweating a bit it’s

The point I’m trying to say might not be what you really enjoy at that moment um how do you deal with that that’s what I’m trying that’s what I’m trying to say you want to get back to the jockey room you’ve you know you’re hot how do you

Deal with it cuz you’ve always got to be polite to the media that’s what I’m trying to say well for me I think um the most accurate comment I can give you is when I’m just climbing offo okay okay just F yeah sure sure but if you ask me

At the end of the day how was that probably not going to be able to give you the right feedback so I think coming with the horse that little bit of information that I can give is probably the best so like you know put linkers on

Let’s try 14400 you know get a nice draw I think we should try po you know that sort of stuff so um yeah so it’s just ideas and um you I think do you do you give that feedback to Ken uh sometimes sometimes yeah like I

Said is after the r not there so but obviously keep for one for the future get make sure that I’ve told him to put blinkers on but also to as you say that’s the best time and that’s such that’s that’s why I was trying to get

The question out is because it was such a great answer that would apply to Ry work as well surely I mean as you get off the horse in the morning you could give that feedback there and then needs a bit of physio or something do you ride

A lot of work do I ride work sometimes sometimes yeah not yeah how do you fear to criticism if if I mean are we all let me ask this rather criticism from the right people if you bump into Jo soap who’s just got the needle I me horrible people we all get

Criticize but how do you you know if you how do you handle it if somebody says why did you do that you shouldn’t have done that well we human we do make mistakes yes um just don’t do it again okay find a way to get a d and make a

Right one thing I’ve learned is TR take it from what’s that saying take it from where it comes you know it’s that’s the most important thing will we get we get enough sh in Don’t worry um maybe a Sil question yes everybody loves winning yes it’s achievement or you know it’s a

Sense of achievement it’s a 39th best jockey in the world 39th best jo you were down to 22 one days apparently no idea that’s not bad not bad at all I don’t know we even had ratings you got ratings The thorough bread commentary how many jockers are there in

The world so there’s 500 on the list so 39 out of 500 that’s not bad is outstanding yeah you’ve only got uh Ryan Mo and few others here do you only of the greatest but it’s it’s also rated by by uh the quality of racing so if you

Have if you have 10 group ones Champion season you’ll probably be number one okay so you go so you go that’s clever but but back to winning what is it that you enjoy most about winning I mean is it a difficult horse I’m saying we all

Like winning but what is it what makes you even more happier is it is it the quality if you know the history of the horse what is it the most what enjoyment do you get out of winning well I would say winning on a horse that’s probably

Rated out of it not to be able to win okay and you get it right okay so basically it’s V mistake so you’re riding horse that’s rated 80 and you’re taking on a horse that’s rated 100 and you carry probably call it similar weight so you’re supposed to run way

Behind it and you get up a short to beat it okay that that is nice I think I was L A pigot at one of those top English jocks in the old days they said the how you rate a jockey is you can get a bad horse to

Win yeah that’s a and that’s also too I’ve had many discussions you talk you’re 100% correct in what you said I you can put that into trainers as well I think you know yeah absolutely to try and get a bad battling Maiden to win its race and and maybe win another that’s

For me Rob to get jockey the same thing get a bad battling horse to win its race I wouldn’t say bad horses I say horses that are not too talented but limited maybe yeah a limited horse where you can maybe win one but then you win that

Maiden then they come in surprise you and they win another two straight after that and you go AB where was what what what has changed you know where where did this come from you some just take a little bit longer than others and sometimes the owners are

A little bit impatient and then they move them on and they end up coming good you know yesterday was a prime example and and we haven’t spoken yet maybe you could give us some feedback maybe there was feedback maybe there wasn’t but yesterday there was a race early on in

Pua where we were watching cuz we obviously watch racing every single day uh um it was in the blue colors poly for the first time short name KO or yomo or oh K yesterday it had a much better run last time I think it was P for the first

Time anyway never ran well at all you can see were way I mean it wasn’t just just didn’t raise a Gallop I mean is is that what it was or did it Beed or did you pick up anything there well I’m not exactly sure what the vet report would

Have said but um you can probably find it on the NH website but just wasn’t the same almost like the last one yeah and why I’m raising that I’m drinking yeah that’s fine you can go go down like our bank balance um what I’m why I’m trying

Why I’m saying that is because people have going to understand we’re dealing with horses we’re dealing with animals you know you know maybe the horse didn’t feel like running that day maybe you just said didn’t so you know that’s that’s it that’s why you see sometimes the form is

Good you know and then you say well how did that run so bad because it can happen you know there not an exact science um your sponsors winning form have been with you for for many years yeah they’ve been very good to me and it’s been a very good relationship um

You’ve only had one SP is that correct has it always been winning foral or was was there somebody before that yeah Johnson’s work okay that’s right correct um at Freeman stallion John Freeman that’s right okay um then my friend’s company greenfish uh Andre N no okay hi and you

Know let’s get on to the important part well I just going to say you fishing there’s another guy Andrew n you remember Andrew ex jockey fisherman of the highest order so is he so are you um so let’s talk quickly You’ only got 2 minutes eh about fishing um yeah just I

Can’t lead the conversation because I wouldn’t know how to fish in Cape Town you fish offshore yeah I do that I do rock and surf as well um when we get gaps but mostly now I would say offshore um as to where there’s a gap where um you know

With the snook yeah no snook is fun I don’t mind that I’ve seen some funny things in my time and take out some jockeys for the first time to go and catch snook cuz that thing’s got some horrible teeth and um you know you got

To snap the the jawline or the neck you know to make the fish uh sleep and then uh you know it’s quite a shock to them but um it’s the way it’s been done it’s traditional um and uh yeah I’ve seen some friends like Anthony Andrews happy

Watching actually sit on the fish to control it yeah cuz they slimy buggers and you know they’ve got spiky stuff but you watch those those Cape Fisher they do they just slap it underneath their arm blink so simple so good you don’t do fly

Fishing uh I can but um yeah I’m not the most patient guy unless it’s like a stock Dam with lots of TR so then it’s okay no no no no I think when when you oh in the rivers for yellow fishing stuff yeah we must come to St one day I

Know but that’s that’s aat give me a ring and we can make a plan that’s definitely I’ll put you into yellow yeah that is then you need to go to the Orange River um with the border of Namibia yeah the Orange River Lodge they catch large mouth large mouth beautiful there’s

Laries in stok contain too okay but it’s the water is gin clear so you got to stalk them you can’t just go and blind and cost you got to watch them and you stupid stupid question both of you I know you I know the answer from you but

I know the answer from him uh everything you catch do you release or sometimes release sometimes eat sometimes take for a br you catch release I mean what’s the point we catch and release but yeah well bloody overrated this fish that you eat bloody rubbish and and you Dy I catch

And eat and give to friends okay those yellow what do you have no I can’t put them back you can’t put them back no no those are nice to eat and they what do you get for p fish I don’t sell you don’t sell no I’m a what you call a recreational

Fisherman I can’t sell but my friends have commercial licenses and they can sell the fish okay yeah but and so you would give it to your mates if you got caught a couple extra those that can sell you give them to your mates and they can sort of no not allow you’re

Allowed to do that not by quite social media yeah he’s doing well in the fishing in fact he’s one competition after competition has yeah he’s a pro bass fisherman um I think he’s leading in South Africa if I’m not mistaken and he’s been overseas he’s gone to America last year he’s going to

America again this year in October so oh he’s going to fish the Champs in in fishes the Bass Masters well the chance to get into the Bass Masters so that’s his dream he wants to see and he’ll be in Europe as well to you be the Kevin

Vanam of South Africa yeah no he’s pretty good it would be remiss if we didn’t talk about uh some of the good horses that you’ve ridden because you’ve won group one not group one grade one grade one yeah grade one after grade one after grade one and you’ve had good

Horse good horse good horse but one in particular that’s got a special place in your heart and to mine certainly uh is is Captain’s Ransom she was just outstanding uh but she’s just one of many I mean we can’t go through them all because we just haven’t got the time but

You really as you said earlier on been blessed to around some bombs yeah I know I’ve been lucky that they found me um because you don’t just go out and buy a group one horse you know you got to be so lucky um they fall and few in between

And uh it was nice for suette and bar to to have a horse like us and you know at that stage when captains Ransom was winning everything you susette and bossy they couldn’t really understand this feeling because they were new into the game and uh you they had this horse winning everything

So I remember Su telling me one day she’s like I’m not sure how I should be feeling right now because I’m I’m not sure what this is all you know what this F is actually achieved and I said well can guarantee you the next 10 years you

Probably won’t see another one like this coming around so it’s a very tough game and you know to get a horse like that so early for any owner it’s it’s probably the Ultimate Dream yeah you got to hold on to it I mean because you know as you say it comes

Early like that and then you could be another 20 years before you get another H absolutely and then of course princess CA you did when correct me if I’m wrong as memory tablets are starting to wear off now jet dock you had one on jet dog

You that’s why why I’m saying that is because Captain’s Ransom is infolded to jet dock so I mean that’s you you must look at that and you think well I W on the dad on the s i w on the May you know and there’s a chance please God that

You’ll maybe even ride the progyny you then you know you’re getting old you know you’re getting old but I mean there’s that’s also fun achievement but Princess K too I mean the older she got the better she got no true and you know let me just touch back

On J talk he was an Exquisite hor he was an absolute giant you know trippy himself is a size really big and this boy is probably the same size and he’s a much younger horse so um I think he’s going to be a phenomenal stallion um you

Know for him it wasn’t you know he didn’t run with his heart um he was a big strong horse and all he has to do is take that and put it into his fs and he’ll be a champion s so you know you get horses like Charles Dickens not

Saying that there’s anything wrong with him but he ran purely ability you well ability as well it’s there but I think he had such an insanely good heart and um he’s a champion um so just worried he was a little horse wasn’t this the biggest of horses and

Where the other trippy c um jet do is a monster those horses throw nicely I’m thinking of jet master I mean he had a breathing problem he was unbeatable at scotsville um but he he had quality and he he had that fire in him uh but he must have

Been a big strong horse too he was a big stronghold so you just need that but again we always say that that that old say there’s never no rules because you talk about that uh when I went up to the Midlands last week to start looking at

The yearning sales horses for next month uh there was a a Philly out of connect me now you remember connect me Gary Rich train I forget who the stallion was I know the stallion makes a difference but connect me was Tiny Absol in fact so

Small that it was you know is she ever going to make a nice brood well her first fall from a tiny little Philly the May connect me is a is massive I know the father’s got something to do with it but yeah just it’s amazing that you

Never know what you’re going to get no rules probably the greatest stallion in the 20th century Northern Doner was two bricks in a pispot high yeah wow so yeah well that’s before us but I remember watching in the book and there was a lot of Northern Daner M

Around is that something Richard that interest you a bit of breeding I mean almost definitely so to pedigree you look and you want to find Champions you have to you got to look at breeding third Generations you got to look at everything when you open that book first

Tim as you got to go o hold on I remember that that’s through there you know that can run and then you go outside and you parading and you look at and go that’s SCE to be yeah and it’s the first time it happened the other day

With Mr kame Craig Zak he CED down to the start and you know I saw it in the book and I was saw whoa hold on this is half brother or something to that very good Sprinter he had uh last season um your city memory lady

L’s not she’s got a lot of them yeah yeah any so then we can down Cosmic hway no not Cosmic hway no anyway doesn’t matter so we cering down to the start and I look at this hor and I said Craig if this hor is half as good as his brother

You’ll smash us all what happens he goes and bolts home so you know you got to look at those things even though the horse is probably PR for further I’ve seen a lot of classic horses win 1200s jet do yeah they all win they all win first

Amount and and they going 2,000 M they were just quality and this time of the year you see three old come out this or four two old now this is where the the quality crop comes out have you got any you don’t really have to answer this but

It would be nice to know you anything penciled in for Champion season that go us to ride yeah yeah no you’re not letting out okay cool words in his M got to put him under pressure maybe he hasn’t singles by maybe one hasn’t come up yet but what I

Do want to say is also what’s so interesting watching the Journey with Richard is is you can see I mean often you see on social media he was in the stable with Captain Ranson he was in the stable with jet dog he goes and visits these horses because people don’t

Realize they they you know when a horse hurts itself or whatever it destroys us you know because they are lives they are they are correct and and that’s that’s what I think his his hard work and his dedication has got him to where he’s it’s get got him and getting him because

Yeah you’ve got to feel the passion for the animal you know it’s it’s it’s not just a it’s not just a machine yeah um what I enjoy the most is when I do ride track work so hopefully next season will be a much calmer sort of vibe um is

Riding track work and finding Champions that is for me like the that’s that feeling you know and it started actually yeah um I was in my second or third year and Mr Miller had quite a few horses um for for Mr sterley and they had some real some really good ones and I

Remember the baron and bar bergsman if I’m not mistaken had a little horse and his name was teabird yeah and um you know obviously I try to hide it in the gallops because there a big jock see this one that’s gone and uh remember it being nominated in an 1100

Um yet at graville and Zan was going to obviously ride the 6 to10 Z Thompson alander Raymond Thompson yeah big support of our from Dubai great guy great man in Dubai fishing yeah very much and um you know I used to try and hide this hor I

Always used to say to Mr Miller you just feeded an old trainer you know but it was little you know little um Li Chestnut and um so work it work it always stay behind you even in the gallops I’d always make sure I’m never I

Never go P just go with them and they like more concent about the two time winners three time winners and okay cool this little juvenile on the side this is mine um and then the one day I messed up so we going to the opening first opening

You know like Mr dry used to do a little short shop Sprint up so uh we go together and we jump in and oh he’s gone he’s gone like 20 M away from me so like sitting he gets balanced up 200 M I’m like on his tail and when we hit the

Finish post it was like five Lings clear and I Trot back no no no no that’s going to be scratched you’re definitely not running this thing against me because obviously winners get a penalty and it was a mid and I was carrying 56 and he was carrying 58 or something or I can’t

Remember the right weights those days so I end up losing the ride cuz he saw this thing and he he realized yeah and then we Mr Miller ran it at graville those days was night racing 1,400 M drawn I think it was 11 out of

11 and it won and it beat a horse called zebra Crossing so and you know who zebra Crossing is I think yeah exactly so that’s right yeah and t- bird ends up in Dubai winning big races as well she that’s a lovely story that was the feel

When I felt that little horse move I said this is what I’m based on I need to find horses that move like this and i’ pride my career on finding that specific feel that’s interesting w yeah they always say a trainer will never commit suicide when he’s got to unra two-year-old in yeah

Takes one just to make what what is it as we we’re getting into the home straet now it’s 10: to 11 and we’ve got racing to prepare Richard’s riding and obviously I’m presenting you coming to shout at us all at the race course um so we’re going to start winding into the

Closing stages but what is it in your opinion that you get you get such good track horses that come to the Races they don’t deliver and you get the opposite you get a that shows you nothing at the track I wonder what that I mean it must

Be frustrating for a rider you work this thing at home and you think y this is you know then you come here you’re looking for oxygen yeah what do you think just that’s it yeah I don’t know it could be cheap speed and when you say horses that don’t work well uh jpeg

Probably the slowest horse you can ever find at home you couldn’t get him out of a nice scer he he was so slow but then you put him on grass and this thing just becomes a monster you remember also sens Duncan always tells us about gypsy’s warning oh yeah GP the

Group yeah I felt it and I said this is a bomb I want to keep this and D it was usess on the track and then it went to to um Mr Ferraris because was and she won another yeah I know but I remember Duncan say Mr

Ferraris F said Jes how do you win a race with this thing it shows nothing it’s amazing but funny enough there was yeah talking about jocks and rides and works somebody had said I don’t know how Richard got the ride but there was somebody that he founded I

Think one of the riders or the agent said you I want to ride this horse they said oh I’ve worked and not for me leave me alone and then then I Richard got the ride but don’t know the exact story and the rest is history but I remember that

Clar group one I think you beat or kill kill Donan I think with that’s right shoting on the inside and I’m on the outside fence that’s right that’s right seon that’s right and every time she ran well the three or four coin I wrot her she was

Drawn wide as the ball every single time it was an amazing like that day clearw I at this idea I said I’m going to win this race I’m going to jump out I’m going to go to the front I’m going to win it and we get left by three Lings

Sitting at the back of the and then I just they went a nice good honest gallop and I Ted out coming into the straight and you know the clear with that outside rail was gold yeah the 400 I was halfway through the field already and you know she was just

Sliding and I remember hitting the line and looking across and that guy saluting I’m like no my body is way ahead of you Mr the not happy he was it was red I remember that standing in the second I remember that clearly qu yeah they weren’t happy but Mr

Griffith Ron griffi the late Ron griffi owned gypsy’s Waring yeah but well she was good yep that clear with day how how old are you Richard if you don’t mind me asking I’m 31 she 31 H okay how old are you 83 yeah yeah Frankie is riding Windows now he’s 50

Something and he’s cleaning up in the Andrew fortun is making a comeback I want to see that I say you have to cut his throat to no yeah I don’t know to make the [Laughter] wait last question is with regards to different personalities we all work with

Colleagues people I come to work he might be grumpy and shouting uh the other lady over there sweet and and everything’s good and you’re dealing with different personalities you’re dealing with different owners you’re dealing with different trainers and you’ll come back to a cross face a happy

Face a crying face a grumpy fa how do you you know I’m I’m never one for disrespect you know if if there’s a disagreement you know the swearing and the fs and B’s and which happens in racing we know that but for me it never degrade or disrespect someone but they

Can get heated moments how do you handle that if you get that I mean you yeah it happens so what’s what’s the relationship in the in the weighing room you mess with all the other jocks get on us but I’m talking about more more the owner and the trainer owner and the

Trainer got you got to take every Experience as it own as it own they all different um you know just no when to apologize there’s not too many trainers left so you can you know their personality yeah it’s hard it’s hard but uh Richard sure it’s it’s been uh it’s been lovely and and to the viewers you

Know you might be thinking well why didn’t you ask him about that and you forgot about that some comments in the bottom section and if they want to know absolutely that’s a good idea if you want to drop some comments in the the in

The in the on the on the on the bottom of the podcast something that we could ask Richard he’ll be in he’s in Duran out of season or in season and uh he’s just a true friend of the media and a true friend of our so if there’s something we’ve missed it’s not

Intentional it’s time constraint and and we need to press on it’s a race day so yep that’s a damn good idea if you want us to to ask him something if we can’t maybe interview him again we can get the answer and we can disseminate it through

The podcast whatever but we hope that you’ve enjoyed this cuz we certainly have and on behalf of Andrew and I and the entire team here at the in the boxing podcast keep grinding keep making us proud uh I know that you’re not one for blowing smoke up peoples but I am I

Like to make people feel good um so yeah we’re proud of you and we love watching you ride it’s as I said like watching a good try or a great golf swing um yeah just keep going what do you know about golf I know I know a lot about golf I

Know that you’ve got to take the orange ball and hit it over the net is that not right yeah anyway so that’s it anything to add nothing to add no Richard than coming we appreciate it absolutely we do so there we go that’s Richard free a

Little bit of a chat session with him anything else you need to know drop us a line plenty of betting opportunities soccer rugby gryan racing you know the story horse sales coming up next month bloodstock South African National uning sale and the uh Hollywood BS Durban July theme will be released shortly too

  1. did Christophers passing affect Richard ,please ask him and how did he overcome the stress because they were very close

  2. Likeable guy is Richard , a top horseman and outstanding jockey ❤🎉🎉🎉 Good Luck with the 334 , make it happen you at striking might as well go for the incentive 💪🥇🏆

  3. where and how did you learn to be such a great judge of pace as i think thats your greatest asset as a jockey amongst others?

  4. I think Andrew should be more proactive in these interviews. He allows the interviewee to flow. Warren needs to look back at his and see where he can improve. He waffles and talks around the point for too long.
