Let’s podcast Joe Julio Joe obus still leaving me to my own devices for just one more day so I’ve got Brad frish professional golfer Brad frish Joe jilo Golf Group Ace ringer unfair there wasn’t much of a ringer quality to it last year was there

I mean we’ll try hard again next year no there was though the last time we played was the best I’ve ever seen you play no now it’s limited sample size that’s true but you were outstanding uh you know who’s also outstanding the people at copers plus they can save your business

Money go to copers D Plus .c copers Plus for all of your Dent print and digital needs and of course we’re here in the beautiful eport Studios this Brad this is not your first time on the program but it is your first time here downtown into our little uh

Dorm room here are you impressed with our setup here thanks to our friend Greg hayum in Empire properties Empire eats I am this is great uh you had my friend Alex on here I don’t know about a month or two ago Dr B yeah I’m not sure where

He would have fit um he was he was in the Hopper over there he was in the captain’s chair no this is nice I’m not a Commuter so I experienced you know Holly Springs to Raleigh this morning so you can run the red rooster Empire out

Of your home is what you’re saying no my office is about three4 of a mile from my house it’s it’s fantastic okay perfect you’re all set up and if you if you need golf cloves this is the man to see red rooster golf.com we’ll hook you up perfect perfect speaking of being hooked

Up up and and I’m going to approach this subject with my eyes fully wide open of the irony that I’m about to present because everyone knows how I feel about gambling I enjoy it uh I partake in it I I used to drive to Virginia I used to

Have to call people in other states to place bets for me uh yes I I have gambled illegally before yes yes I think that’s all pretty clear at this point but now that it’s legal in 38 States and we’re seeing it not it’s not just a I

Think we’re at a Tipping Point here with the Sho Otani story that has percolated Here and Now risen to the to the Forefront for Major League Baseball um with NBA players both speaking out about how they’re being treated by fans and and I’ll play the clip from um theres

Halberton for the Pacers who’s having an an outstanding season but sometimes you sometimes you can get lost a little bit in the sauce and as a professional golfer I’m sure you’ve had some exposure uh to people who were either gambling for or against you in tournaments uh

Maybe there might have been a tiger Elric Woods in a group with yours that or in front of you that you might have been like uh oh they they’re definitely not rooting for me um and then also when we look at this in terms of uh there’s there’s also another NBA story with

Jonte Porter about specifically about prop bets so I want to get into I want to start with Otani though and the story of his interpreter um I’m going to try to do this right epe misu Hara eepe Mizu Hara is sh atani’s interpreter or was he

Was fired by the Dodgers this week he depending on what side of the story do you want to believe he either racked up $45 million in gambling debt and then shohi covered it for him cover it meaning paid for it or racked up $4.5 million in gambling

Debt and stole 4 and5 million from shohi the story is varied right now because initially ESPN had reported there was an LA based uh bookie who had been taking bets and had assumed they were from Otani because Otani was the one paying him off well turned out it was really from

Mitsuhara initially ESPN reports mitsuhara in in a grand tradition the noble tradition of of Japanese culture of of literally falling on your sword and kamakazi divers bombers took seemingly looked like he was taking one for the team coming clean and saying n raising his hand loud and proud I’m the

One who who lost all the money and Sh is the one who gave me the money to cover the debts then Espin was ready to run this story and then otani’s legal team was like hold up time out uh this has now been reported to the authorities he

Stole from us this is a case of theft and now spinning it a little bit more forward ESPN is trying to figure out okay you said you reported it to the authorities but no one here is saying that you have so you got the FBI involved you got Homeland Security

Involved you got a little bit of everybody involved on this one Brad and I think it was is it inevitable that we were going to see something like this and no one’s accusing Otani of a Pete Rose and gambling on the angels and if

He was he was man he was somewhat of a sucker if he was betting on his team the way that Pete Rose was because they were terrible but was did you do you think with the proliferation of gambling and the way that it was that we were headed

Towards something like this with a major star like Otani oh of course absolutely and I don’t know if it’s ironic or prophetic or whatever that it’s that’s basically the most marketable baseball player in the world um drawing so so much interest from North America and outside of North America

Um I will say one thing before we go into the Otani thing you’d be shocked how many millionaires give access to other people to their accounts whether it’s managers you know Financial guys whatever the case may um there are guys who want to do nothing

But focus on their craft so I know golf right you’d be amazed how many millionaire golfers have no idea what’s going on with their money with their own money okay and and you’ve seen and I to be fair here with uh mahara this is like one of his best friends you gotta you

Got to think he won the lottery to begin with to be the one person otani’s Camp chose to come over with him right and really he’s more than an interpreter uh if if you read up a little bit like he’s the one you explaining scouting reports to him and and Inter translating the

Coaches and what his teammates and so he’s on his schedule he’s more of like a a life coach for this guy right you know and so your point would probably would have some sort of power of attorney or or access to his bank accounts I I have

Grand confidence in the fact that he most likely had access to whatever he needed to not to say that he stole the money maybe Otani did cover it for him uh knowingly but I just wanted to throw it out there first like guys don’t want to have to deal with the details when

You’re that good at something there’s a reason it’s because you’re singularly focused on that and there’s a reason why so many uh pro athletes xn current lose a ton of money in various Investments because they let guys do with their money what they think is the best idea

Not what the player thinks is the best idea so um yeah before we get started on that and and why it was an evitable I thought I’d throw that out there is it inevitable of course it is like gambling like any other Vice is an addiction right so it’ll come for interpreters

Interpreters it’ll come for players and um just the NBA story out this week that you referenced was it it is inevitable and you know it reminds me of the whole I can’t remember who it was at Boston College uh Henry Hill and and Good Fellas and all that it

Just reminded me a little bit of that guys throwing games and then the movie what Blue Chips stuff like that I honestly it surprises me that it kind of came into Pro Sports first and we haven’t heard much at the college level now whether that’s being you know

Whether they do it better I’m not sure but um so far it seems to overtaken the pro level uh fairly quick what we’ve seen on the college level there is an investigation into Temple basketball right now that’s ongoing but what we’ve seen at the college level where we is

Players who are placing athletes who are placing bets not on their sport but not realizing I know this is kind of hard but you’re of my generation the younger generation knows they’re being geot tracked but they don’t care like all of these kids grew up they have Life 360

Their parents track everything that they do and and they don’t care so we saw this with Iowa football Iowa State football a bunch of players just started placing bets on their phone thinking no big deal not on Iowa not on you know but the NCAA rules are very Draconian when

It comes to gambling like you are literally there’s like two things they’re allowed to bet on if as a college athlete like NASCAR and maybe um Cricket I if the NCAA offers your sport at the professional level you cannot bet on that sport on any level so it’s it’s

A weird kind of deal and that’s different from and even and even with Otani it’s a great point that you make about people having access to his money his interpreter right well Otani signed a $700 million contract that is baseball that is guaranteed so him covering someone’s $4 and half million do debt

Feels like a lot to us yeah right and I wouldn’t even lump you in with me because you’re more successful than I am but for most people you look if you were on the when you were on the tour and you see Phil betting half a million dollars

On the kickoff or the the coin toss of the Super Bowl right but now caught up to Phil because he didn’t know how to turn it on and off but there’s a difference between sh atani losing $ million or someone like me losing even like $55,000

Right there is for sure I mean obviously it’s percentage based and it’s all relative like anything but um I I will say that I if it’s if he had to cover that I’m sure it’s a little bit uh different in his mind than him losing it himself and

Having to pay it off I was going to say now is there a difference in your in your mind between Otani let’s just say Otani was a big Lakers fan and it turns out he was placing he was placing all these bets and he lost $4 million on the

Lakers and and the rams and anything other if it comes out that he was gambling on something other than Major League Baseball do should we should we have a problem with this I don’t think so I don’t think so either I don’t think so I think that’s where we should be Advanced

To I guess the the Line in the Sand gets drawn when someone is betting way too much relatively speaking and impacting their financial bottom line and all of a sudden they me to make ends meet uh they need to compromise their their competitive Integrity right however now

That everything is legal that you can bet on like it used to be oh the mob will do it you know they they’ll come after you they’ll make you you know they’ll break your kneecaps or you have to throw a game now it’s no you just pay your DraftKings account right exactly so

I I don’t I don’t know where that pressure would come from other than financial based you know oh I need to cover this but it’s all upfront money now right on these you have to have the money to gamble it so that’s kind of one of the benefits if you will of legal

Gambling on the other side of this you know I said Otani had a $700 million contract somebody like jontay Porter who’s being investigated by the NBA doesn’t make now he makes six figures but he doesn’t make $700 million okay so the NBA is investigating irregular betting on Jon

Porter’s props and if you’re unfamiliar with a prop a prop is a proposition bet meaning you you take over or under a player’s points rebounds assists you can you can combine them all all this stuff so Porter um who is a you he’s a sub basically and there there while there’s

Going to be a lot of action on LeBron James and jannis Sant TMO and even guys who regularly play you kind of got to work a little bit to find jontay Porter’s props at the end of the book so a red flag is immediately going to go up

If an an abnormal amount is BET on his props and it also looks like Not only was an abnormal amount put on it but he seemed to be cognizant of these numbers and May and now we have a competitive Integrity issue because we’re not talking about someone with a bazillion

Dollars and we’re not talking about someone who probably in their own head is like well I’m not Point shaving I’m just controlling my output for props not trying to affect the Line This is where we get a little bit now we’re into the blurry territory aren’t we oh it’s very

Blurry I think in in that story there were two games where he took himself out of the game for quote unquote injury related issues and his you know his prop was you know over under 0.5 three-point field goals he didn’t make any right uh in four minutes that he played there

There was a video of him hitting like a banked three at one point and his face was not he was not pleased with what he had just done in a certain game um this is not good this is this is absolutely compromising the integrity games and like you said he’s not making $700

Million I think his salary is something like 45,000 leag minimum yeah league minimum I’m not sure if he’s on a two-way whatever it may be um this is and this is just starting Joe like this and that’s the part that’s the part too and you got to think why is the NBA

Doing this because the popularity of the NFL as such now we can get into the construct of the NFL it’s it’s supposed to be only once a week even though now it’s four days a week but mostly it’s a once a week game people could focus on

It gambling whether you call it legal or illegal fantasy football and gambling is the number one reason in my opinion that the NFL is as popular as it is I agree with that fantasy football 100% fantasy football and gambling has a 20-year Head Start I mean they had baseball

Rotisserie leagues but it’s every day it’s hard a grind that’s a grind like gambling is NFL gambling once a week do what you got to do I think the NBA and these other leagues looked at the NFL and said well we can’t play once a week

So what can we do that they’ve done to be Mega successful and I think gambling as a as a revenue stream just as the state of North Carolina finally decided we would like to tap that Revenue stream right because it’s going on anyway so we want to tap that Revenue stream I think

The NBA was an early adopter particularly of these prop bets because it does seem like a little bit more easy right to bet on Tyrese halberton to have over under you know seven and a half assists right like I don’t know what the Pacers are

Going to do in this game but I feel more confident that tyres halberton averages eight assist a game so therefore he’s going to hit his average I’m G to bet on the over right so the unspoken part of this part of the gambling and popularity

And your quest to be relevant is how you are affecting the actual players themselves and I’m going to pull up the clip here from Halbert and and just curious your reaction cuz again I’m I’m just guessing there’s been a point in your professional career where you’ve

Been on the course and someone may have said or said did or didn’t say something to you where you it was probably fairly clear to you that they had money on on something that was about to happen so here’s here’s how Burton he said this recently not everybody cares to hear how

We feel or that’s just the point like I to half the world I’m just uh you know helping them make money on DraftKings or whatever you know what I mean like I’m a I’m a prop you know what I mean like that’s what my social Med

Mostly consist of you know I think it’s important for us to like have somebody to talk to and like I think all that stuff is like it can be funny sometimes somebody’s like you know I lost a thousand dollars I don’t give a you know

I mean uh I do think um I do think that it’s important for us to just have conversations with people who really value who we are as human beings and uh and it’s not just sport psychology but it’s our teammates it’s our loved ones it’s uh it’s people who really look out

For our well-being and that’s important for me to just have those be sure to like com so he was asked about his mental health and how he talks to a sports psychologist and he kind of veered off into yeah like I feel like a little bit

Of a you know a commodity right that I’m being traded and sold and I think it does affect fandom ultimately and I you know as someone again I am into gambling I enjoy gambling we are sponsored by DraftKings I I want to make sure I’m fully transparent on all these things

But I think and I even mocked the state legislator when when they were kind of going through some of this stuff but there are a lot of unintended consequences to the rise of of the gambling IND industrial complex yeah you know how players needed to get on social

Media to to build their brand to to be something outside of of who they were as athletes you know to rep certain companies whatever the case may be I think now it’s incumbent upon players to not be on social media because that stuff is so toxic and or if you’re super

Disciplined never read the comments it’s hard not to read the comments you know you like that little little dot above the the Bell notification and you’re like a I wonder what someone said well you know 90% of the time it’s not nice uh especially if you’re day and day out

Playing NBA basketball and someone’s betting on you and you’re not hitting your props I mean this is this is not good and I and I I can sympathize with Tyrese halberton not I can’t empathize because I was honestly before much of golf betting I remember one specific

Situation we were in Reno so legalized betting Nevada you were there yeah yeah and um a player was was hurt and so I saw a caddy call a friend of his and be at that time and I think they still do they had um player versus

Player bets so Brad frit to beat Ben Crane it wasn’t Brad frit and Ben Crane but it was something like that and you know this guy might not even Tee It Up so he’s taking the other side he’s telling another guy to take the other side now what happens the injured player

Could beware the injured golfer uh he plays a good round and and he beat the guy but it was just one of those things where that inside info um can be there now this was so much less prevalent this is 2013 or 14 I can’t remember I mean we’re 10 years later we’re

Into um legalized across the internet FanDuel DraftKings whatever case may be this is not good going back to the player mental health part you know social media is super toxic and for for a player to be answering for his play not to his coach not to his other teammates but to thous

Thousand of fans who are disappointed that he got eight rebounds instead of nine it’s uh I had a guy last night on a group text he goes Larry Nance you’d think playing 20 minutes you could hit one statistical he had like one Rebound in 20 minutes everything else was z0000

Z z and I’m like you must have had Larry nans and prop pets he said I did gonna give some free gambling advice because I see this and I’ve tried to explain this to my sister who’s new to gambling you you get the free bonus bets and all this

Other stuff because they you they offer prepackaged parlays now parlays we should probably go back a half a step props people aren’t just taking straight props they’re putting like eight props in a parlay you know you put $10 on it you win $10,000 or whatever the hell the

Payout is right so it’s not like a straight bet like I’m old school I make mostly straight bets I I parlays are there for a reason because the the odds are super high for reason they’re really hard to win now what’s even more what what your alarm Bell should be going off

Even more is when you see prepackaged parlays and they’re all over DJ Burns over DJ horn 3’s over LeBron James’s points over because there’s an old saying Pros take the points and in props I literally have one friend who is a professional Gambler he made a whole Year’s worth of salary taking Kobe

Bryant in his last two or three years under consistently every single time because the public sees a number and they go it’s going over it’s going over so when you see these prepackaged parlays and they’re all over that the wor the tiny print might as well just

Say sucker on it and even if you hit them even if you hit one or two you’re like oh no I hit it there’s a reason they only offer over because the public thinks over when really you should be taking the under so that’s my little bit

Of gambling advice today uh and also parlays man yep you get this younger generation is totally into the idea of a scratch off and not just let’s go try to win grind you know 10 12 separate bets so all right speaking of golf speaking of gambling let’s talk a little bit

About um I want to talk a little bit about what’s going on with professional golf but first I have to make sure everyone knows the best way to get their house clean with housekeeping Housekeeping you know what I love more than anything else is being right and as I’ve said before enovana has a great website easy to use Easy to navigate easy to save money on your housekeeping but don’t take my word for it check this out I love it when our OG audience reaches out

May 3d one year you said we couldn’t do it or maybe you did but we’re here in part because of the way that you guys support our sponsors the way that you do can’t thank you enough for that so let us buy you a beer come on over come to

Shades in downtown Garner Friday May 3rd and we will celebrate well have food trucks there thanks to our friends over at breu and we will have all kinds of ways to celebrate our year and just thank you guys for being there for us we really appreciate you we we can’t do this without You it’s been an unusual PGA Tour season and by unusual I’m even going to say boring even though Scotty Sheffer is seeming seemingly has found his form which gives us what we’ve been searching for on the tour of course we’re always searching for the next Tiger right and just as in

Basketball you want the next Michael Jordan the next LeBron James you’re always looking for that next singular star but I can’t help but look at the results of the PGA Tour this season and and I’ve got I got nothing against a different a wide variety of people winning on the tour as

You very well know the difference between player number two and player number 222 is one putt that lips out one bounce that doesn’t come off of the The Fringe the right way you know Landing in a divot on one of your drives like it’s it’s minimal the difference between

These guys minimal Peter monatti being able to drop from that sprinkler head and drop it on the Fring which was completely legal easy two putt rather than a pretty tough up and down because of how bad the lie was yeah it comes down to luck sometimes it does and and

You mentioned Malina he he won this past week we’ve got Austin ekro Jake knap uh Matthew pavon Nick Dunlap Grayson Murray Chris Kirk Chris Kirk obviously a little bit more of established name there but these are some of the winners this year names I didn’t mention John Rob Cameron

Smith W Neeman who should be one of these rising stars in golf but is kind of gone uh Harold Varner somebody local here who has an appeal um these are all guys that are on the live tour and these are all guys obviously not participating

In PGA Tour events I think it was most obvious at the Players right you’re watching the players and Scotty Sheffer does really well at TPC courses maybe he wins it anyway if everybody’s there but I would sure I I would have liked to have seen him go against Cameron Smith I

Would have liked to have seen uh the the young Argentine nean you know take a look at that thing so we’re going to get this in two weeks at the Masters for the most part there’s still going to be some live guys who aren’t there and they did

Give a special exemption to Neiman who’s just been blistering hot on the Liv tour for for whatever that’s worth but you and I will be in pin in June and we’re definitely getting everybody there so I’m I’m definitely looking forward to that but just the the state of the PGA

Tour uh what is your kind of interpretation of it it feels like it just feels different different this year for some reason and I know it’s not just losing ROM to the to the live this year no it’s the slow bleed of of guys of of

Top players to live it’s guys who were supposed to be stalwarts who stayed like SP and Thomas and some of them might have their stuff wrapped up in other things like the PJ tour policy board and trying to figure out the long-term direction of the PGA Tour and

You know like we talked about before guys want to be singular in their focus and right now they’re not and so a guy like SP or mroy who’s had good rounds but not great tournaments um you know they their head’s in a different spot I think and

And a guy like Sheffer who we were talking off the show about how he doesn’t say much he doesn’t have social media he rarely comments about the PGA Tour and live he did a little bit I think a couple weeks ago but he very downto Earth and singularly focused and

You could see it at beill and the players where he’s kind of he’s he’s getting his Swagger back the exact right time now it’s really hard to win three in a row I don’t think he’s playing before the Masters he might be I’m not sure but

Um it will be good to to see everyone together again I was at the Masters last year and and the vibe this year might be a little more or a little less contentious I’d say because they were definitely in that early part of you know us versus them

And I think now you can kind of see some sort of resolution tracking maybe and so guys are a little less inclined to well Rory has toned down his rhetoric and I think that that’s kind of where I think you see some of the PGA players taking their

Queue from yeah c can you imagine if he goes over and takes the payday in lie of seeing maybe a resolution and he takes all that money can you imagine the the hypocrisy of that that that’d be wild and Rah was a was an outspoken critic of

Liv and and took the money I mean I’m past the point of blaming people for doing what they’re doing I am curious though as someone who has more information about this than the normal person the the American basically based Investments does that Stave off what looks like to be some sort of compromise

Between these two groups that we’re I hope we ultimately get to or do you think this is going to keep dragging out yeah I hope it um I hope it eventually comes to resolution because like you said you just missed the the weekend week out when all the top players are

Together there’s more likely a scenario where a couple of them are butting heads at the top of the leaderboard doesn’t always play out that way sometimes Peter malady wins anyway yeah but um I I I feel like there has to be some sort of compromise you know both sides kind

Of get into the mushy middle somewhere and figure out something um the one guy we were talking about you don’t hear much from the head of the piff you know the Yasser I’m not sure his name actually you don’t hear a lot from him about this whole situation you hear it

From Greg nor I say Greg Norman’s the mouthpiece yeah he’s the mouthpiece and and probably the more abrasive of the two in terms of of PR I I don’t know I’d be fascinated to know what went on at that meeting in the Bahamas last week and just to see what

What kind of things were talked about because there’s no doubt that I would say both parties want all the players together um I I don’t think it’s possible with the format for Liv to get all of the players together they had certainly have the money to do it but

Then I I do see a scenario where the PGA tour and the Liv tour kind of come together and and figure out maybe they’re a part of the Signature Events maybe they’re a part of um maybe they meld together completely I I don’t know it’s it’s very you know if

You got if you got a bunch of players in the room oneon-one and you ask them like do you want to go to Singapore Dustin Johnson doesn’t want to go to Singapore right like he’d rather be in the US there’s a ton of players who don’t want to do all this travel but

For $250 million that’s what the money’s for I’ll do whatever you want me to do um I do Wonder though is there a compromise where there’s one live event a month whoever wants to be in it is in it now obviously those guys who were contracted to but if there was like a

Team of JT and spe and and their guys playing against I would watch that you know but that’s where I think the compromise has to come from also there’s also the other side of this like the people who did stay loyal to the PGA like do you think there should be a

Reward for them or maybe more of a punishment for the people punishment in the sense of okay you can’t just leave and then come back because the temperatures have changed yeah I think there’s definitely a reward system coming keep getting these emails about the player Equity program I don’t read

Them because I’m not a part of it but you know that there is going to be some sort of player equity in the PGA tour in that for-profit Enterprise that they keep talking about uh I think it goes both ways I think there should be some

Sort of penalty if they want to come back and there should be Financial penalty Financial penalty and there should be some sort of reward for guys who definitely turned down a whole bunch of money and stayed loyal to the PGA Tour whether it was right wrong indifferent there there should be the

PGA Tour should be rewarding guys for Staying if you’re looking to save money on your home auto insurance pet insurance life insurance picking insurance pick a way to save best thing to do have a conversation with Matt Davis over in Garner Matt Davis and statefarm over in Garner it’s inor gunner.com best thing to do though give

For all of your legal needs and we appreciate Josh and Joe for supporting us here at the OG 100% right Joe okay all right we’re obviously kneep in basketball mode but next week NC state has their Spring football game and they’ll have a special guest he’ll be

Back 1986 ACC Player of the Year former Wolfpack quarterback the Wolfpack great Eric Kramer and Eric I’m I’m glad you’re going to be back in Raleigh for the spring game and I’m glad you’re going to have a chance to talk to some people about you know not only your life story

But mental health and the importance of mental health and really just kind of to use a football analogy tackling this thing head on because you know I I I feel like we spend too much time trying to hide from from certain subjects instead of trying to embrace them which

Is really what you’ve tried to do here in the second act of your life yeah it’s great way to couch that and I think that uh you know to I get the analogy or the the football reference of tackling something but it’s almost like tackling sort of a combative term where I would

More couch it as just um setting the stage to to kind of openly talk about it in such a way that it’s non-threatening I mean you wouldn’t have to tackle talking about a broken leg would you and so so it’s just these are kind of common everyday uh things that people go

Through um that just need a stage for it to be okay to talk about it it’s nothing more complicated than that and uh as you mentioned you know I I um have tackled or dealt with depression uh at various stages in life and have dealt with certain heartaches that not a lot of

People not everybody does as I should say some people do um losing a son and uh both of my parents and and just uh you know there there’s been some tough times along with some very good times and so being able to you know communicate that first writing this book

Uh and having it released this past November called the ultimate comeback surviving a suicide attempt conquering depression and living with a purpose um you know I triy to take my own life un fortunately I was unsuccessful and since that time of recovering uh which took quite a while

Um you know I feel back better now than ever yeah for those watching on YouTube I have the link there for the Amazon for the book The Ultimate comeback surviving a suicide attempt conquering depression and living with a purpose that’s by Eric Kramer and uh Erica I had the privilege

Of talking to you when Detroit the Lions your for one of your former teams was going through a playoff run and now I’m talking to you when NC State’s going through an NC an NCAA basketball tournament run so yeah maybe there’s some good luck here maybe your mojo is

Is is is moving here man these are all good things I love it I like I had never heard of NC State until 1983 okay and um so uh you know they they obviously it’s it was probably at that time basketball-wise the greatest

In a real story of all time a guy that I got reunited with that I went to high school with Rich llamas um he’s the one that let me know they even made the tourn or that they won the tournament and then also he’s he in his mind that’s

When March Madness became March Madness yes and uh so the fact that this is almost like a recurrence of that is uh it’s awesome and uh you know so they beat Oakland University last year last week and uh the interesting there to thing to me is uh Oakland is right down

The street from Pontiac I mean Oakland University is like the school that’s right down the street and um it’s just a great story that you know uh Bill kenis who was the uh media relations director there for years and just retired last year his son Billy um is the head

Football coach coach and a math teacher and I can’t remember the school but uh uh Trey Townsen was a student of his in in his math class so the star player for Oakland yeah yeah yeah which he told me was you know at the time they’re having

Not mentioned this gky guy and then what a magical thing that was so to beat Kentucky and then for NC State it’s funny how you when you mention that well I’m now mentioning it but like it was a close game if NC State could have gone

50% from inside of 8 feet that would have been a blowout because there was no such thing as an offensive rebound for Oakland either went in or was NC State’s ball and and uh I just think the way they’re playing defense and rebounding and DJ Burns is like the second coming

Of Charles Barkley in college uh it’s amazing to watch you have an amazing story and uh I’m I’m going to put the link here in the the YouTube section where you can see our full conversation from January goes into a little bit more detail about everything don’t want to give it all

Away because you’re going to be here you’re going to be in Raleigh you’re going to have a chance uh at the Raleigh Times on Friday April 5th uh to to read some from the book to talk to some of the NC State fans who’ll come out and

See you looking like 3:00 right now our time because you’re out in California um so I’m looking forward to that Tim peeler uh one of your contemporaries there from NC State NC State historian will be there for you that day too so I know you’re going to be busy when you’re

Here in Raleigh again the name of the book is the ultimate comeback surviving suicide attempt conquering depression and living with a purpose and uh and living with a purpose so you’re going to be doing that when you’re here for this spring game I’m curious Eric when you

Know you come back and see some of your former teammates is it do they know how to react did they just embrace you do they do do you have to try to just say hey to them like because you’re you’re a little bit older do you have to just say to

Them like hey this is a real thing this is a real topic and I I want to help people so how’s their reaction kind of been everybody’s there’s the the reaction has just been 100% positive um and it’s amazing that people um that I’ve known my whole life like my aunt for instance

Um she learned some things about me that she didn’t know or about her sister my mom that she didn’t know and uh and and then there’s people that haven’t known me a second that can relate exactly with whatever it was I was talking about whether it be depression or my parents

Or is this a I don’t know I I guess what what this is allowed me to do is um connect with people in a way that maybe I hadn’t before and opened uh some doors to begin like you mentioned at the at the Raleigh Times to begin speaking

About it and that to me is where it’s at is when you can make a connection with people and then begin talking about so when it comes to depression um there’s a program that I’ve um it’s a nonprofit it hasn’t kicked off the ground we’re

Looking for a sponsor or and I and we’ll be good getting one but um it’s basically we’re going to have some after school kids fourth fifth and sixth graders one Elementary one one um middle school and uh start out talking about you know what characteristics in a

Person would you want to be now we’re talking you know 9 10 11 years old and uh those characteristics could be things like kindness compassion um uh you telling the truth whatever it is and those things can be acted out and so um and then the idea is that you would

Build a home team right and so well then how do you approach someone like that well that too can be acted out and so uh you run into things like bullying and other things and there’s a way to um you know act all those things out and if you

Consider that you get on the proactive side of this before depression ever strikes you in you involve of not just the one child but their whole family and uh then I think you got something and um so that’s just one of one of a couple things that I’m working on that I think

People will Embrace and want to get behind it’s an inspiring read it’s an inspiring story and Eric has a powerful message I would encourage you to read the book before he gets here and then maybe buy one when you get here and you can have it signed by Eric Kramer he’ll

Be here in Raleigh downtown at the Raleigh Times it’s Friday April 5th it’s the day before the NC State spring game be Eric Kramer Tim peeler talking a little bit about his book talking about the importance of mental health and I’m sure you could twist a dick Sheridan and

A and an NC State 86 turnaround story because you guys had an amazing turnaround from in fact I got my little uh let me stand up here got your diamonds on I see it yeah I got the diamond NCS on there and uh every I’d say for about the last three or four

Years former teammate of ours uh Brock Miller who lives over in the Myrtle Beach area we now get together uh if You’ got a significant other bring them and uh there was 14 years there was this diamond associated with NC State and uh we’ve had the best time coach calwell

Has come last year and uh talk about a Storyteller coach calwell it was it was it was like a two-day Affair of a standup routine like a a country bumpkin standup routine it was if you haven’t met him that dude is amazing and uh uh

And so we tried to make where Bobby pcel could get there too although last year he had something going on with his eye and uh but it’s just it’s just a fun couple of days you know watching some football games and hanging out a little bit well Eric looking forward to seeing

You next week here in Raleigh uh again the name of the book The Ultimate comeback check it out on Amazon and you can also see him at the Raleigh Times in person on Friday April 5th before that spring game Eric so happy that you’re able to share not only your story the

Message of mental health but also to get back and reconnect with the NC State Community um you you’ll you’ll always be a wolfpacker I appreciate it thanks Joe thanks for the opportunity you got It do you know how I know everyone’s excited about NC State advancing in the NCAA tournament and winning the ACC title for the first time in 37 years it’s not social media it’s through two roosters that’s right toughy tracks for my guy Jared at two roosters you

He’s interested in so let’s start with Hey Joe what is Brad’s best hurricanes conspiracy theory it’s not really a conspiracy theory it’s a it’s a wh if and it’s if the canes resigned Jake gensel obviously he’s been a really good so far acquisition some crazy stat like

On the ice for 16 goals against zero so far in the event they resign him given that they’re so attached to the value based proposition of each player like what do they bring how much are we paying them and given the fact that they’ll probably lose one of peshi or Shay maybe

Both yeah I I would expect both yeah so Chatfield orof have to move up they have to find a couple of Def defensemen before the Russian guy comes over I think he has one more year apparently he’s amazing this involves another Russian will they move off spetch nikov his

Production you’d say is a little underwhelming for the contract 7.75 I believe yes he’s under a point of game he’s not the trigger guy on the power play that I thought he would be you know left-handed shot I thought he would be the guy on the right side that

Would just be slapping one-timers oetkin but on the reverse side either they don’t like him there or he can’t do it do they move off him do they trade him I mean he’s a great he’s a really good player but he takes a ton of offensive

Zone penalties a ton he does take a lot of penalties and not not retaliatory penalties they’re like oh I’m gonna trip this guy as he moves past me for no reason whatsoever and he’s done it for six years now as an 18 19 20y old fine but he just turned 24 I think

Yesterday when’s that going to leave your game as a as an interested Observer it annoys me okay watching that so to find another defenseman of Great Value do they move off him just in the event that they get ginel back in the fold now as a UFA they typically don’t

Overpay right so that would have to be some sort of give and take with the value they assigned to Jake gensel so there there’s my question okay I I kind of like where you’re headed in terms of value and how the canes think yeah but here’s one flying the moment what if he

Has an unbelievable playoffs and what if they win the cup even they can’t move off of that like they’ll they’ll have the same problems that Rutherford had in in ‘ 02 and’ 06 yeah where you get attached to people and you’re not Bill Bell only there’s only so many Bill bellich chicks

Out there right who can do it win it and be like no I don’t need you I can replace you one of your former colleagues thinks that they’re married to him he he’s not going anywhere you could say Adam Gold’s name it’s fine yeah okay he’s a friend of ours friend of

Mine too they bother him probably too much while he’s speaking on his show um but I like to give him little tidbits no I again this has nothing to do with not liking him or or thinking he’s a a poor player he’s he’s a really good player

But again that it was something that I thought of when I saw gensel make this great bumper pass to I think it was Jarvis for a power play goal a couple nights ago I’m like uh where’s yeah like where where is he he should be on the ice yeah but he’s not

So that’s just something I kind of thought about the other day and and just the way they operates different than pretty much any other team in the league so I just thought of that and you know but they snov staying a Kane also has a ton of pluses in that category which is

Number two overall pick the Rapport he has with AO not sure if we’ll see teroy again after this year but you know in the room he’s another Russian so orloff and this other defenseman nikan coming over like that’s always a something to to think about as well so that’s my your

Kane’s conspiracy that’s my Kane’s conspiracy all right next question Hey Joe Kentucky is keeping John caliper are they going to regret this what do you think BR so I only have one experience with John it’s not with him it’s watching him they came to play Carolina a bunch of years years ago I

Got to go to the game at the Dean Smith Center he did so much more coaching than I thought John Calipari did now this was five six seven years ago I can’t remember how long ago so that that changed kind of my opinion of him just

That I thought he was recruit wear a nice suit sit down on the bench um I don’t I don’t know I watched a lot of comments from a lot of his friends and colleagues former colleagues Seth Greenberg um Jay Williams was was was talking about him Jay bis was talking

About him I think it’s just a matter of adapting about you can’t play now they had some older players on that roster but he’s always been the play freshman Jay Wright said it I think freshman aren’t going to win you anything anymore and this was your take from about three

Or four weeks ago you need an older roster now this is the way of college basketball for the foreseeable future when they’re allowing guys to stay I don’t know how when that going to end we got two more years of Co eligibility yes but for the time

Being you have to adapt or die and so I also want to come back to the then this has to do with the ACC as well the tournament is a oneandone right completely fluky this this bothers me I’m a Dallas Cowboys fan regular season 12 and five 12 and five 12 and five

They’re a good team yeah they can’t win a playoff game but they’re they’re constructing the roster based on we have to get to the playoffs first and so you have to get to the tournament first obviously his team was good calipari’s team was good this year they happened to

Lose to a Cinderella team that made 15 three-pointers right and the guy made 10 on his own yeah um it doesn’t mean he’s a bad coach it doesn’t mean he’s doing everything wrong they just have super high expectations at Kentucky I think it’s good that they’re keep I’m always

In favor of keeping a guy over moving off guys stability is so important do you think there’s something too though as we’ve seen um I I go back to Bill coward one of the most amazing things that he did was basically stay with the Steelers and win a Super Bowl in his in

His second act with the Steelers that’s the exception in Pro Sports and I think in college sports too it’s like sometimes your message gets stale even in college when you are the roster turning over on an annual basis because kuy’s had older teams Oscar schwebe the

LA two of the last three years was one of those fifth and sixth year guys out there making a million dollars to play basketball and they they they couldn’t do anything with him either so I don’t know if it’s adapting or if it’s just a matter of you know sometimes sometimes

Your stay just runs its course like Peter laviolet with the Hurricanes I mean I I I’d let him Coach forever you know won the Stanley Cup But ultimately your message gets stale and I think I wonder if that not what’s happening here I think John calberry is obviously still

An outstanding coach and someone would hire him in two seconds but I I don’t know if he’ll ever win again at Kentucky because it just seems like he’s Starcrossed at this point that he literally has like half of the NBA All-Star roster like if you look at the

Rosters and of the guys who went to college they’re all his and then you go back and you look oh what have they done and this this random chaos generator that is the tournament it also probably should make us appreciate apprciate more the consistency of Dean Smith it should

Probably make us appreciate more the consistency of Mike Shashi it should probably also make us appreciate more the consistency of Roy Williams Because you can be at a blue blood you can have five star players KY is gonna have more uh lottery picks than anybody else

Combined in in this next draft and what did it get him it didn’t even get him a win in the tournament throw another one out there mark f mark F consistency yeah this 16 in a row yeah I mean it’s it’s wild um H how again I’m not advocating for him to

Leave I’m just saying sometimes when you’re Kentucky and I think Nate oats getting secretly getting that little extension he got at the end of the year from Alabama I bet you there was some back Channel action going on there because there would be no reason for Alabama to give oats the extension that

They did if they didn’t think something was going to be a foot coming up so uh I did notice that when that had happened we could uh we could also talk about how it’s really really dumb I don’t know how I went from Calipari to Rod brandamore

But that the canes might be tiring of Rod brendam Moore not the organization but the fan base this was about four months ago it’s like ah they’re just not going far enough and I’m like they’ve been to the Conference Finals was it two of the three years or two of the last

Four years like what are you talking about yeah all and since we are really on the YouTube’s now we can go to some comments this is from yesterday’s show I got a little love yesterday so I got to make sure I read it correctly blind lemon jello nice clothes with the music

Runs the board like a champ yes uh the the Watchers the viewers the listeners were somewhat concerned as I was when Joe obus is not here of how this operation will work and then he’ll yeah uh we had someone the previous day say why do you have to swear I don’t get it

You know and I said my initial reaction was like okay that’s big Bill Cosby energy let’s not tell people what to do but but I got over it and I said you’re right sometimes I probably should control myself but when I do it’s because I’m feeling something and so

Yeah heal yeah here swearing gilio is my favorite like you said it’s the one time I know you’re trying to hammer a point that I know you’re also right on so I appreciate that uh what from John Henry what happened to the Wake Forest plate it’s still here Al

Duck the good luck wi Forest plate and I didn’t give up on my on my deakes I believe i’ said I saw Steve orbs in DC and I apologize to him like hey man I’m sorry you know I I jump on the bandwagon and you guys like fall apart and he’s

Like no no no it’s like it wasn’t you he goes we need people to jump on the badwagon don’t don’t just don’t leave us yet and don’t blame yourself I said okay so I felt uh I felt absolved from that so that’s some of that NC State [ __ ]

  1. This rampant sports betting is disturbing. Especially for college basketball. Its only a matter of time before a player or team takes a dive, tarring the sport for years to come. These kids aren't exactly NBA millionaires. ☹

  2. While I feel it skeevy how these betting sites hint at riches those who are most vulnerable will never make, I have nothing against people doing with their money as they wish. But I absolutely have a big problem when sports becomes more about the money you (won't) make than the athletes themselves.

  3. Great show and really enjoyed the segment with Erik Kramer. Important to bring more light to mental illness.
On another note, keep the F-bombs coming. Sometimes you just gotta let one go.
