Well welcoming Chandler Phillips the media center here at the Texas or the Houston children’s Texas open just Chandler how’s it feel to you know be back home playing in your home event for the first time as a PJ tour member yeah um really excited uh you know I have a
Lot of family and friends out this week and uh hopefully I can play well well enough for him to give them something to cheer about what’s what’s different this week compared to kind of the rest of the week’s on tour for you really the only thing is just having my
Own truck you know not driving a courtesy car and uh it’s kind of the same thing just just another tournament man um excited to be here uh not too far from home and ready to get it started this this Thursday you’re coming off your best finish last week with the T3 at the
Bort Championship moved into number three on the A on swing five just what are your thoughts on where your game’s at currently and you know giving your yourself an opportunity to play yourself into that next signature event yeah I mean it’s I’m trying not to think about it too much uh just trying
To do my own thing and you know if I end up getting into the event so be it but uh tend to not play as well when I start thinking about the future and uh so I just kind of go day by day shot by shot
And if I end up there I end up there Kevin how did um that last week being in contention at the Val bar compared to kind of past experiences in contention College corn fre for different levels and was there anything you were able to draw back on and even though you didn’t
Win you had a nice final round we right up there at the end yeah um honestly it I was surprised how comfortable I was you know uh didn’t really like look back on past times I’ve been in that position uh but it it was it was it was honestly
Kind of scary how how comfortable I was uh you know nothing really affected me too bad you know I made a handful of Bogies on the last day but it seemed like when I made a bogey I came back and you know made a few birdies and so I it
Was really encouraging how I you know I I played in that position so I’m I’m pretty happy with it what would you say came together for you last week or was it just a continuation of progress or was there a part of your game that specifically elevated how would you kind
Of yeah I I drove it a lot better last week than I have uh the beginning of this year and also puted really well um last week the chipping I I felt like I chipped pretty well but man that rough last week around the greens was it was
Pretty dicey so you get some lies where it’s like you don’t know what it’s going to do is it going to come out hot is it going to come out dead but uh everybody had to play it and you know I did what I could and but the driver and the putter
Really uh really stood out to me did did you ever find out what happened to the folks that your golf ball found yeah far I know you’re that really really seemed to bother you that it happened of course you know you got people watch watching golf it’s going to
Happen so yeah everything was okay with him I hope yeah I was I actually I got a message on Instagram from the guy that I hit and come to find out it was a a husband and a wife and uh he messaged me and told me that they were all good and
You know it happens and everything like that so I’mma probably today I’m going to message him back and you know see what I can do for him and uh you know I’m just glad they’re okay because it I think it affected me the way it did
Uh just because it didn’t look good uh they the lady that I hit I think it hit her first and it ricocheted off of her and hit the guy or her husband and um yeah there I saw some blood you know it and then when you see that you don’t
Know how bad it is and everything like that so I just wanted to make sure you know the EMS or you know trainers get to her as quick as possible and you know get her whatever she needed and it sucks but you know it is Golf and you know
Sometimes it happens but when it does happen you hope it’s not you you know but uh yeah but they he he did tell me that they’re they’re okay they’re they’re fine you’re still living in College Station correct sir where where are you living now right now yeah uh yeah I’m
Living in College Station I’m from Huntsville about an hour north of here and uh yeah I’m I went to college at A&M and I pretty much never left uh have you do you have any history with this golf course I mean even before it was a PGA
Place did you ever play Memorial Park as a as a junior yeah I uh I well I played I played this course before they redid it and then since they’ve redone it I actually only played it for the grand opening uh Giles and Whitey they they
Contacted me to come play in this grand opening like scramble tournament but that’s the only time I’ve played it for that any experience you would have had that day probably won’t mean a whole lot this was a different time of the year and everything yeah yeah I tell you the
Truth I couldn’t even remember any of the holes but uh and really today the north the wind’s straight out of the North the tournament is supposed to be straight out of the South sou and it’s going to be hotter so really and truly today was kind of pointless on you know
Shots and everything like that yeah I mean it’s honestly it was just a good walk you know you’re not going to be in the same positions you’re not going to have the same shots uh because it’s it was pretty cold this morning uh it’s going to be hotter during the tournament and
Completely different win and I think it’s going to blow pretty good which I’m excited about because I love win I’m from Texas growing growing up in this neighborhood right yeah absolutely uh does does it does it feel like a home event though oh yeah absolutely it’s
Going to really feel like a home event once you know Thursday and Friday comes adrenaline starts flowing and you see buddies yeah I mean I don’t crazy my adrenaline doesn’t really get going uh I don’t know why but it you know every now and then maybe for
One shot it’ll you know get going but uh I think it’s it’s going to feel like a home event once I see you know 20 30 of my family and friends out here just you know coming out and watching H there may be more than that I don’t know so
Now I’m going to steal your question here that uh you know it’s kind of cool though that this is a course that anybody in Houston can play the rest of the year U you know can you reflect on on that is is that probably a better thing for golf than everything’s not so
Hyper exclusive yeah I mean I I think I think I heard it’s like 35 bucks if you live in down and like you live you live inside you know Houston city limits which Houston’s so big you could live 30 minutes from here and you can come play
Here for 35 bucks so yeah I mean the course is unreal like honestly me and my caddy Braden were uh we were talking about it it’s maybe the best condition course we played all year um and now not knocking any course that we’ played so
Far but I mean there’s not a blade of grass out of place out here and it’s it’s really good and greens are awesome so yeah I mean I’m excited I I think it’s actually going to play a little bit easier not that it’s a easy course but it’s going to play a little
Bit easier with the overseed because you know down here in Houston you know in the South we got Bermuda and if it was Bermuda I don’t want no part of this place you know and what ways them do you think it will play kind of easier like what areas
Of the course or you know off the team more around the green type well so for like me this course really doesn’t fit me um I’m not a bomber this is a bomber’s paradise it’s really long but for me that there’s really not too much rough
Uh there’s actually no rough at all it’s almost like a first cut you know uh so every drive this week I’mma give it all I got you know so I don’t you don’t have to hit it particularly like really straight you can kind of you
Know have a little leeway on it but um but also chipping chipping off this stuff I mean you’re going to have a perfect lie every time uh and you know you you may be a may be in a bad position and you may be able to get it
Up and down where if it was Bermuda closer you could hit it is 30 feet you know so that that’s the way I see it you know but who knows and I’m mentioned your caddy Braden I know it’s a home game kind of for him too being from B what’s
It been like having him on the bag someone you’ve known from high school and he said first met when you were eight at a tournament and yeah kind of how that caddy partnership came together and just having someone who’s such a good player too bag with you yeah H he
Beat me uh the week before last yeah I mean we’re playing at home I think he beat me two days in a row and I mean he’s great he’s he’s he’s a great player he’s a great friend friend you know great caddy and uh I mean I I think for me it’s just
Really good to have somebody you know that’s close a really good friend known him for a long time uh we can just talk about anything we ain’t got to talk about golf we we can just kind of hang out and have a good time and you know he
Knows like if I you know get down on myself or you know get mad or anything on the golf course he knows knows how to get me out of that state of mind and yeah it’s been great and um what’s his name Braden Bailey Braden b r a d b r a
D n Bren Bailey yes sir from Port NES Groves over in Bowmont no he actually went to Baylor yeah he went to Baylor I went to A&M um after college he he moved back home and he didn’t have really anybody to play with um and you know when you when
You start playing I feel like when you start playing professionally or you know even in college it’s just like college you you have teammates that you can play with and you know everybody’s helping each other and everything like that but when he moved back home he didn’t really
Have anybody to you know kind of I I want to say like push him but like he just didn’t have anybody to have like some competition games or anything like that so he actually moved to College Station so he lives in College Station now also uh so yeah it’s been great
Where did what was the cor City beat you at and what was the our home course traditions and College Station yeah and what about do you know what he you shot and he shot I think he shot like five or six under and I shot like three he took
Like 50 bucks off of me and then um I did want to ask too being um I know you played a little junior golf with or High School golf with Scotty eer and he’s on such a great run right now kind of what are your early
Memories of playing with him and did you notice that Talent at the time that he shown now yeah no Scotty Scotty’s been who he is you know on and off the golf course that he is right now he’s been that since I don’t know I mean we I’ve been
Playing against him for a long time you know Texas has a lot of like uh or I wouldn’t say a lot but a handful of like really good Junior tours uh like tjgt um Legends you know and ajja comes here and everything like that and you
Know play against him there and then we had to be in the same like um Class A of state and played against him for three years he was a year older than me he won every year and then he finally left and I you know played well and got to win
Stayed after he left but I was kind of glad when he left but now uh now I get to play against him out here and it’s it’s awesome seeing way he’s done and you know especially when you know know Scotty like I wouldn’t say that me and him are like best friends or
Anything but like I’ve known him for a long time and you know we talk to each other when we see each other and um it’s it’s really cool and kind of a I guess simple or abstract question but from your perspec of how is he so good why is
He so like it’s just unreal ball striking numbers and what would you say how is he able to to do this yeah I don’t know that you’re asking the wrong person he I mean he’s just an athlete I mean he he’s I wouldn’t say that he’s a technical guy I think he
Just has unbelievable hands and can feel it around the golf course you know and uh I mean going back to State and high school I think it was like my sophomore year Scott Scotty used to play basketball and in high school and um he’s really good and um I remember stay
He shows up and almost a like a boot you know I mean had an ankle brace on his left ankle like and he you know kind of limping and I’m like what happened you know what’s going on and he ended come to find out he ended up like rolling his ankle or something
Like almost broke his ankle I think uh playing basketball and he’s he he like like if that square of a foot you know when you get up to the ball he cocked it out like way out almost pointing towards where he was hitting because he couldn’t
Like turn on it and he ends up winning State and I’m just like man get out of here you know you know so but no he he’s just a he’s just a free athlete man he’s he’s unbelievable so is so he he won state championship did you say three years in
A row I think he won four I think he won it every year and then you but then you won did win the year after he the year after he left yeah he he finally he finally got out of there all right thanks chanler good yeah appreciate it thanks guys
