Chris Harris Jr. Joins to Talk Mack, Bosa Staying and Mike Williams Departure from Chargers

What they got going all over the AFC West because it’s popping off and really um Chris for the sake of this you’ve been through free agency and I think we just start right there the Chargers signed you in uh in 2019 I believe it was two-year deal you went through free

Agency after signing that big contract to extend with the Broncos kind of take us through what that process was like for you man it was um definitely it was it was new cuz you know playing in Denver nine years you know I kind of missed that window probably after my

Fourth year of not going to free agency you know I signed the deal my fourth year so I didn’t go I didn’t get to test the mark until my ninth year um but um in in that way you really don’t know what’s going to happen right you really

Don’t know what teams are gonna um really come at come after you um I never knew the Chargers would come after me really it was really a lot of the AFC West you know then I had Philly and then the Saints so um it’s just you know you

Never know it’s going to be the right fit luckily at that time uh the Chargers had coach miles he’s the coach that brought me in um that coached me in Denver so I felt comfortable going with him you know and then uh unfortunately you know they were gone after the first

Year and you know I had a couple injuries so that was really the main thing you know just having two different staffs and then I had some injuries uh but that was kind of that was kind of what made the U the uh charges thing uh

The charges free agency not not as good just because we had injuries and and new coaching you know but it was it was fun man I love going I love playing in Sofi man that stadium is amazing yeah the um the teammates man were amazing Herbert is you know he’s special you

Know Keen Allen’s special and um it’s sad to see what’s happening now you know letting Big Mike go because he’s that he’s really he really is uh Herbert’s you know big- time Target you know down the field so um it’s going to be interesting to see what happens Yeah you

Mentioned you know I think so many fans just assume that in free agency you’re going to go where the most money is and that makes sense it’s a it’s a tough sport injury can end your career in a second so you might as well get all the

Money you can but you mentioned Ron Myas your your position coach so how much does that like in your opinion when you see guys sign how much obviously the money’s way up here and then everything else is down here but like what are the factors that that lead someone to choose

A particular spot well I had a bigger offer from the Raiders than the Chargers so that just just let you know like I thought I thought it’d be better relationship wise with Coach ly and Coach milers people already knew right and compet against them all the time

Compared I didn’t really know what was gonna happen with coach Gruden right and then you see what happened with Coach gr you know either way they both you know we both kind of lost Co went to a coaching uh Carousel but um that’s what comes into it right you want to see

What’s going to be the right scheme who wants to uh play you the right way right and the right system right and how you going to fit with the guys around you on the team um so all that comes into play um especially than me with family you

Know is it it’s gonna be easier for my family to make this transition on this team so like like Kurt Cousins now that was the easy transition for him why because his wife is from Atlanta right right so it’s all those things come into play and that’s probably why he chose

Atlanta over staying in Minnesota Yeah you mentioned Big Mike and and we knew the Chargers were going to have to make some moves before you know 1 p.m. Pacific on on Wednesday it’s just the reality of it they had four guys they thought they had a real shot

At the Super Bowl last year and this is what happens they kicked the can you know to this year because they wanted to go all in last year with Bosa with Mack with Keenan with Mike and and the bill came due and when it came due khil restructured he clearly is sticking

Around Mike Williams was released they tried to find a trade partner couldn’t do it what what do they lose you know we know had Mike stayed healthy he ain’t going anywhere he’s one of the best 50-50 ball guys in the league but what do they what do they lose you know by

Sending Mike away you know what that relationship was like between he and Justin Herbert the just a big play threat guy that can make those 5050 balls you know those tough catches mike always comes out with those crazy acrobatic spectacular catches right and that’s what he does and um Keenan works the

Middle Mike kind of works the outside and you got to have two guys in this league to be successful but unfortunately Mike’s been injured um I think his cap hit was like 30 million yeah right and that’s that’s outrageous really you know you can’t really pay a a

Receiver that hasn’t been playing that much money especially when you got guys like Herbert you can kind of plug in play a lot of guys um we’ll see what Johnson look that’s why you drafted Johnson first round right because you knew one of these days Mike or Keenan

Would have to go right and um uh now you have to get Johnson ready and hope hopefully he can come in and fill in the talent that He has and be able to be that 50-50 guy contested catching guy uh because you need those guys you know

You’re not g to get open all the time in the NFL right you got to make tough catches sometimes and that was what Mike did he made a lot of tough catches he was very reliable in the red zone and um you know he was the guy that Herbert in

The clutch he always look for him yeah you mentioned you know q and and it was a rough go last year no no doubt about about it had some ser and that listen the stuff showed up that we saw at TCU had serious issues with drops he would

Gather you could see those confidence sort of problems you know at TCU he was just a quick slant guy and go and and when M went down like how much of a concern would that be for you Chris when that’s what they drafted him as hey Mike’s outside Keenan’s you know has

This Ro we want Quinton to be this guy at the line of scrimmage just quick hitters and go he gets put into that Mike Williams role and it just didn’t fit him had trouble track over his shoulder a lot of drops is that something that you could see him develop

Or do you think Quinton skill set is what it is and it’s not really that Mike Williams thing well really I think he’s more athletic than Mike really you know when you talk about speed athleticism Quinn’s definitely he has it right but Mike just you know he’s a great his

Radius right his wings span his his ability just to catch those 50-50 balls you know is just different I think Mike might be a little bit bigger I don’t know they’re both big you know both both yeah you know they’re both uh you know tall receivers long but um the thing

With Johnson is that you have to get used to the league right um the league is is different from a standpoint as in college you might have more free access right guys are scared of you right in college so they’re not going to get up

On the line and press you all game like League we don’t really care because we see big guys like that all the time from a Corner’s perspective so we’re going to get up and get he’s going to get challenged a lot more right so now hopefully he’s used to that now he’s

Gott more comfortable with guys putting it pressing them uh being more aggressive with him and uh hopefully this year he can show that he’s ready to take that next step uh for the folks that are that are watching and not just listening perhaps you can see that I’m

Here bad day for your Alma moer yesterday Chris Kansas dealing with some serious injuries Get Smoked by Cincinnati in the Big 12 tournament man it’s been a tough year for us man we’ve had injuries and you know um we we’re not used to not dominating the Big 12

But I don’t see that happening anymore you know um with all the new teams coming in and um it’s Talent all across the league you know I think it’s like seven ranked teams so it’s going to be mean k you got to bring it every week

I’ll uh I’ll say this real quick before we get back to the uh the charger and AFC West conversation uh Kansas is not messing around with football now you know oh yeah they they they are they are sinking some serious cash into that program they love lifeold like it feels

Like Kansas is is now pushing chips all in on this football thing which I know has got to make you happy oh I mean we’re 400 over $400 million on new stadium right um and being able to invest in coach Lio um the the student athletes of what we’re doing up there um

You know my wife is on the board with the business school so she does a lot of things with their um with their students in the business side so we just stay heavily involved in KU we love KU and they are um they are doing amazing

Things to up there to try to make improvements um for the football team not only will that impact the football team it’s gonnaa impact the whole state right um with the things that they have going and oh man I’m I’m excited man I can’t wait yeah people don’t uh you can

You can bag on football and the amount of money that spend all you want but you just you just there’s a correlation you win football games and you see applications rise uh considerably the amount of you know I’m in Southern California obviously believe in Charters the amount of kids that go to Alabama

And Georgia and Clemson is crazy to me it’s like you are in Southern California and you don’t want to go to USC or UCLA or you want to go across the country because kids love football man you win it you win a college football and it’s

It’s an opportunity for you to grow your your ex your application base and that makes obviously admission base and now you got a bigger student population all right that’s a bit of a Sidetrack but let’s let’s kind of you’re right ku’s ku’s population actually is going up

It’s crazy and K States really dropping but um it’s it’s just it’s crazy that you say that cuz you never realize how much Sports has impactful or is impactful with how many students want to go there right 100% 100% let’s let’s some people know this some people don’t

Some people maybe that hold the highest office don’t know this but let’s cross the border into Missouri and talk Kansas City Chiefs um how big is that Gap you see what the Broncos are doing you release incredibly talented players you know like Justin Simmons you know Lloyd

Kushberry is gone you trade Jerry Judy so we can kind of get a vision of of what they’re doing there and and how they’re going to move forward Chargers look like they they took the half step I thought okay are they going to take the full step are they gonna keep everyone

And see if they can run it back with a new coaching step they kind of took the half step of keeping khil keeping Keenan it looks like is how they’re going to do this at the very least as we do this right now but how big is that Gap when

You see the Chiefs and the rest of the AFC and I should mention this too Chris you mentioned you almost signed with the Raiders Christian wiins incredible player next to Max Crosby they resign Andre James like they signed Gardner muu to maybe be a bridge quarterback so kind

Of let’s let’s just talk about the the division as a whole there oh the division is definitely I I don’t think it’s as tough as it has been you know um just because the the Chiefs did win the Super Bowl but that wasn’t the best Chiefs team right right to me in my

Opinion not having the weapons that they usually have um that was this should have been the year you know last year for the Chargers to get them right that was the that was the time to get them right and um not having Mike not being full the full Squad versus them you

Gotta have them too you gotta be healthy right Joey’s out it’s hard to beat the Chiefs without Joey and M you gotta have both of them right and um to that’s why they brought them guys back right they they you can restructure something with really they they all three need a new

Deal really if you really look at the cap um you know Keeny I think he’s coming on he’s last couple years he needs a new deal um to spread out that cap you know um same thing with Joey you know Joey needs a new deal you know um

But Joey might not want to do a new deal just because he hasn’t played the last couple years so he might want to dominate this year and then come back and reup again so that’s probably his mindset right so um I think it’s it’s it’s it’s it’s pretty wide distance

Right now right until um because I think the Chiefs are going to get more weapons right they’re going to find they’re going to go get it’s a lot of receivers out there they’re going to go get a uh some speed receivers and some guys that can catch the ball actually catch the

Ball right and what’s the weakness right now for the Chargers I would say they’re secondary they have I I can’t name the corners right now they got one they got a Sante that’s it yeah that’s it you know so um that right there is a major

Issue right comp even going against um I would have right now you know defensively right Chargers might have the worst defense right now just because they have just der and Sant and Mack and BOS everybody else is you don’t know who’s there yeah right you don’t know

Who the linebackers are anymore you lost Mary you lost tranquil you lost Kendricks uh you know um so it’s a it’s been a lot of shuffling especially on that defensive side and they’re gonna have to retool right um they’re gonna Dort Dam’s gonna have to go crazy right

Especially him and Asante to make that and the Raiders are getting better right they’re improving um they picked up a nice uh solid I think he’ll be a quarterback that’s battling for with another quarterback for the starting spot with M mu so that’s what that’s what I that’s what I see happening but

The Raiders I would say they took the biggest step closer to the uh Chiefs and um I would still have the charges ahead of the Broncos just because Herbert Broncos don’t have a quarterback so I’ll put Herbert up um put them third right now just because of

Just what he can do just how special he is you know it’s wild Chris we we talk with the fans you know a lot we love to interact with them we appreciate them commenting especially if you’re going to check us out on YouTube um and and we

Try to interact as best as we can and and one thing that and I I’ve tried to kind of say I get it from all sides if you’re a best player available you know if you if you claim that and that’s what the Ravens have done they have always

Been best player available it’s one of the reasons why they they have such a consistently good team they’ll take Kyle hamton when they just signed a safety for 60 million bucks because they’re like well whatever this is the best guy on the board so if they stick at five

It’s very possible that it’s Malik neighbors or Roma dun you know one of those wide receivers instead of an O lineman instead of Dallas Turner instead of Terry and Arnold the corner but like the one thing I’ve noticed is nobody’s talking about defense everybody is talking about do you take the tackle you

Know whether it’s fuaga or leam or ult do you take the wide receiver if it’s neighbors or somehow Harrison Jr fall but no one you just you just laid it out they have no linebackers like they got Deion Henley who was only a special teams player last year that’s and Nick

Neeman also a great special teams player those are their linebackers they have no interior defensive linemen except for um you know what Austin Johnson gone Sebastian Joseph day gone they’re all gone I mean they’re all free agents they’ve got two Lee on one Edge KH on

The other and they got one corner they just signed a Gilman so they have their safety tandem back with a ly and and darl but like to me you got to really think hard if you’re G to trade back about ter and Arnold quinan Mitchell the

Corers or Dallas Turner The Edge to get that depth it just looks like this is not enough to me it feels like not enough people are talking about defense at the top of the draft and maybe getting the number one defensive player in Dallas Turner instead of thinking offense

Oh if I’m the Chargers um I’m looking very hard at the corners right um I think they were last in the in pass defense last year or botom pretty close if not close to it yeah pretty close so um I’m thinking at Arnold I’m thinking at Mitchell really

Mitchell that’s be my guy um at that fifth spot to bring in or I can trade back try to get two two two extra picks for it that F that fifth pick is very valuable this year yeah right so I can probably trade back to like 12 13 14 and

Be able to still get Mitch or Arnold a good Sol of corner and add some couple picks right right so um that would be my strategy right if I’m the Chargers try to trade back try to get me three two or three more because you got to replace a

Linebacker we need a d lineman and we need a corner right um so we got to figure out a way that we can um load up on on defense right because we’re not doing that in free agency so we got a load up on them on defense on uh in the

Draft and um we there’s still a lot of weapons out there there’s still a lot of guys out there there’s not a lot of Corners out there no right so I can see them drafting it’s going to be very hard to pass up on these receivers I know

It’s man neighbors and yeah guy from Washington I mean it’s going to be hard for me to pass up on the tackles right in this draft right because their generational tackles these guys you got two of them two or three of them that at least you know could play 10 to 15 years

Right so it’s going to be tough man it’s going to be a tough draft but Chargers got to go defense they have nothing on that side of the yeah it’s it’s you know and you mentioned how valuable the fifth pick is whether or not you know coming

Out I was in Indie and coming out one of the things I said I noticed I said I feel like there’s four quarterbacks in the top 10 it it really did feel like that JJ McCarthy Buzz was real was legit now when you start to see the the

Quarterback movement at is good with Kurt Cousins that was a spot we thought could make that short jump do the Giants want McCarthy would they be willing to just come up one spot and maybe flip you a third or something like that to do the one- spot jump is it Minnesota obviously

It’s you know Sam darnold one year you know Gardner men you essentially a one-year deal for the Raiders from 13 we know the Broncos are still looking you know at at 12 you got the Vikings at 11 so like there’s a lot of movement there um you mentioned Mitchell out of Toledo

So the one kind of knock on him going into the the Senior Bowl was never played man you know did not play much press he was his Zone corner he gets down there they put him in press situations a lot of people get excited about that they’re like oh no he he can

Handle that from what you see that you know there’s like a couple concerns right that people talk about one level of competition and then two did not play a lot of man coverage really almost none what are those legitimate flags for you Chris or have you seen enough with the

Explosiveness of the combine and what he was able to do at the B to kind of relieve those concerns I think he I think he kind of knocked those concerns out you know he went out there and competed um and had to play a lot of man

At the Senior Bowl so um I think he did a great job there going out there competing um I thought he looked pretty solid at the combine ran fast showed that he’s athletic to be able to play man right so right um a lot of these

Guys coming in the league they got to sharpen up the tools anyways everybody does right and a lot of times you don’t the coverages that you playing you might not ever play in NFL again right or the way they play things you know techniques ways you know it was kind of like that

For me a lot of stuff we did in college I never did again in the league you know so that’s just how it goes sometimes as a DB so um I think he has it I think he has the tools and they need somebody they need somebody Derwin needs somebody

Um you know a bigger corner right you had that with Michael Davis but Michael Davis didn’t play up to AP par up for the Chargers right he had a great career there but the last couple years you know they they probably want something new they try to go get it with JY Jackson

And you know he didn’t come through so I think they you try to develop a young corner with Mitchell or the guy from uh Alabama I think that’re that’s a win-win to me or Kool-Aid I think they’re all right there in that little mix um and uh

Be able to get somebody in the back end you got to get somebody at the corners you have a good you have a solid Edge rusher right but you got to get some Corners right you invest it usually most teams don’t invest that heavy in safety right and they invest more in corner

Right so but you invested heavy in safety right right so you got to get some younger Corners Some solid Corners that you um that you’re not you’re not going to be paying Big Time Corners right because you’re paying your safeties so um you got to get some solid

Corners some try to find some solid deals that you can find oneyear deals um that you can find like a kindall fuller right from the Washington from the commander that a one-year deal something like that because you’re going to have to you’re going to have to do that for

The next couple years you know at the especially in the DP position yeah no doubt fer somebody that that I know Tom tried to get you know back when he was traded from or released from the Bears uh you know back in the day so certainly that’s one that that could help they’re

Going to need look they’re going to need more than just draft picks they’re they’re going to have to figure out which is why at the moment we’re doing this we know there’s more coming we know that that Joey deal is not going to stand it’s either he’s going to get

Traded he’s going to get released or it’s going to be redone to to provide some some c yeah yeah and Keenan from all you know all indications you got Jim Harbaugh praising him five six different times from the the Lector when he gets hired Joe Ortiz prais it so Greg Roman

Prais everybody is talking about how important Keenan is so that deal is going to get done and you’re gonna have a little bit of of Freedom there financially to try to get this second third wave of free agency and also one of the things to remember is what Joe

Hertiz talked about and that’s the comp pick formula something that really has never adhered to for the last 10 years with the Chargers and now you’re looking it already probably a comp five for for Kenneth Murray probably a comp seven for Austin Eckler so you’re going to be able

To get some comps coming your way which is why you know when you when you look at the way that that they signed their players who they signed um and how they want this comp pick formula to work out they’re probably going to sign guys that

Have been cut that don’t factor into the comp formula um so they can try to build those you know compensatory picks for next year they only got one this year uh a seventh but Chris let’s talk about those signings let’s talk about building this team now in the Jim Harbaugh Greg

Roman offensively image they signed the Gus bus Gus Edwards from Baltimore they have not had a big back really the entire time they’ve been here I remember they Anthony Lynn had the guy from Boston College um Andre Johnson maybe I think was his name I can’t was uh yeah yeah

Something like that um but that was it they have not had a big bruis and they have not and they have not been able to run the ball like they they they’ve been one of the worst running teams so you get him you get a tight end who can

Block also something they have not had since they let go of Hunter Henry when he signed with the the Patriots but they get will dley um those are the two guys from the outside they bring in and certainly that signals you know it’s not just all talk they want to run the ball

Which is where now offensive tackle comes into play with that draft pick and trying to get someone a little more physical on that right side because they have struggled to run behind Trey on that right side of the line ever since he’s been there yeah um that that’s the

Thing Harbaugh’s goingon to run the running football right he’s going to run the football I can see Herbert even doing a little bit more quarterback run right because all his quarterbacks usually have some sprinkle quarterback run in there that he’s had um he’s gonna he’s going to run some play action right

He also knows how to open up you play a hard r offense um I think I played him a couple times earlier in my career you know um facing him but you’re going to get some spread too he he he’s gonna open it up for Justin too um he’s pretty

Versatile I think um with his scheme um but like I said the number one thing is being able to run the football if you can’t run the football with a hard R offense it’s hard to make everything else click right within that system and um like that that’s what I said it’s

It’s enticing man you got a you got Joe Al right there you got the big guy from uh Penn State right there that’s a mar right you know um that that’s that Herbert would love right you know so you can keep building it around Herbert or

You can try to figure out hey we got to build up this defense sooner or later right Herbert can make keep making plays but it’s hard to win with you got 30 second and defense and pass defense and things like that I can’t get I I don’t I

Can’t get the ball back right right what’s the point of that when I can’t get the ball back so um uh my best my the best way for them to to be able to beat the Chiefs is kind of following their strategy the Chiefs have built up

Their defense right right and they have young tons of young guys all over the place and they got a couple staple guys in there but they have built up their defense and that’s what the Chargers need to do they need to follow suit and

And able to uh to be able to knock those guys off that’s a great Point Chris you got you know when you have Patrick mahom you can make a second round receiver like Rashid rice look like one of the best rookies from the class you know you can make isah Pacho because everybody’s

Terrified you’re going to be throwing the ball you know a legitimate running back in the seventh round and and instead I mean just look at those draft picks lerus Sneed and and Trent McDuffy and George carloftis and Nick Bolton like these are first second third fourth rounders like in every level of the

Draft they’ve managed to hit on those picks um which is where the the the whole trade down thing comes into play Just you’ve got eight picks right now figure out a way to get to a you know 10 maybe 11 you don’t just have to trade

Down from number five you can trade down from 37 you can trade down in the third round and pick up an extra fourth like there’s there’s a way to try to get this roster populated and just get as many bites at the Apple uh as you can I’ll

The Broncos are going to do um you see Russell Wilson depart he said because it’s not just the AFC West there’s wild cards out there as well um just kind of when you look at the quarterback Shuffle in the in the AFC and and not to mention what you’re seeing Tennessee doing and

Building up around their Young quarterback that they now believe in bringing in Calvin Ridley for 100 million bucks almost and an offensive lineman and and all of that kind of how do you see this landscape of of the AFC shaken out as is you know these teams

Try to figure out how they’re going to approach the remainder of free agency and and and what they’re going to do in the draft uh man man you seeing what the ra Ravens did picking up um Henry you know I think that’s huge yeah you know the

Ravens offense is already tough to stop the run already you know now you had Derrik Henry there with Lamar Jackson you know um teams got to get built to be able to stop that right um Chargers need like you said we they have you can’t

Name a d tackle right how are we going to stop the run versus these guys right um that’s what I’m looking at who’s going to be built to stop these guys the Chiefs can stop it why because they have Chris Jones and they have a lot of dogs

Up front right yeahum and that’s what you need to be able to stop these to be able to stop stop um you know the Ravens and stop being even the Chiefs can run the ball pretty solid right so I see it’s going to be a more physical AFC um

Next year uh Nick tub is back you know with the Browns they make some nice moves they got Judy they picked up they still got Cooper you know and they got um they got their hor is coming back Really the horse is coming back right yeah the average is dang their five

Yards a carry you know so you know it’s gonna be it’s gonna be a more physical even with the Steelers they’re going to run the football and be physical play action you know and um be a lot better I think than Kenny pick it I just even I
