A report from WCTV-6 in Tallahassee, Fla. (yes, we covered the Gators, too) on Sept. 12, 1987 on Florida’s home football opener against Tulsa. Bouncing back from a 31-4 defeat in Miami the week prior, the Gators rode Emmitt Smith’s 109 yards and two touchdowns to a big win over an outmanned Golden Hurricane squad.

With last week’s nightmare in Miami still fresh in their minds the Gators returned home to tackle the golden hurricane of Tulsa well there was a light rain today at Florida field but nothing even remotely resembling a hurricane so it was up to the Gators themselves to put their own damper on

Tulsa’s day the chief meteorologist on this day was Pensacola freshman EMT Smith in the second quarter with the gator leading 3 nothing he burst 66 yards for the first of what should be many touchdowns in his orange and blue career I feel great about this win but

This win really don’t really to me I’m looking forward to next week that’s the one that really going to count if we can win against Alabama and go on and win the rest of our conference game those are the ones that really mean something less than 5 minutes later it was Smith

Again this time on fourth down from the one it was 17 to nothing and the Gators were rolling the Real Kerwin Bell stood up with less than two minutes to go in the half he drove the Gators to the Tulsa 2 and Wayne Williams did the rest

This one was over at the half and the 52 to nothing final did a lot to ease the doubts in the minds of the fans and of the Gators themselves uh wanted to come come in and dominate the the football game defensively and and offensively and after our first half you know first

Quarter we was a little sluggish but we got cranked up and um you know I think we turned this thing around overall very happy with the outcome I guess uh with the outcome of the game and you can bet Florida was watching tonight’s Penn State Alabama game with more than just

Passing interest the Gators will travel to Birmingham next week to take on the Crimson Tide Kent tomash Channel 6 iwitness Sports Gainesville what
