You sometimes I think there can be some repetitiveness uh on these Airwaves if you’re talking about us having three hours in the morning and then two hours at lunch and then two hours midday and then 3 hours on after further review you’re talking about 10 hours of daily

Coverage here in the Baton Rouge market and sometimes we talk about the same things if you listen to the last two hours probably not going to catch much of the same over the next two hours Jimmy and Charlie doing an awesome job hanging out at the bo revage talking all

Point spreads all March Madness all NCAA basketball uh with guests and and different folks over there at the Bo revage and I’m not going to do a lot of that uh we’re going to do some things as far as the local teams are concerned not the biggest story in sports today which

Is March Madness closely followed by probably shotani in 4.5 Mill million do Luke Johnson’s going to be byy in 15 minutes we’ll talk about the Saints Chase young signings on the offensive line signings in the secondary get to all that with Luke in 15 minutes Joe Healey D1 baseball’s SEC extra team

We’ll be along at 1:30 a couple of SEC West baseball games tonight and an entire weekend to get ready for so we’ll get Joe’s thoughts on the SEC baseball weekend at 1:30 um we’ll have LSU in Florida starting pitching rotations that I want to talk about in the second hour

Chris Blair is going to come on by at 2:15 talk all things LSU wrapping up the basketball season talking about LSU in Florida in baseball so much much more to get to over the next uh two hours we start with LSU football Tigers back on the practice field this week and meeting

With the media this week after a week off last week for spring break and there have been a couple of Springs under Brian Kelly where you’ve had a lot of continuity in the coaching staffs he brought in Matt house and that’s who was his off defensive coordinator for two

Years he brought in Mike Den Brock his offensive coordinator for two years there was a lot of continuity going through last year’s spring and obviously this year there’s been an upset in continuity on defense likely for the better because LSU was a mess on defense last year for the entirety of the season

So basically an entire overhaul of that side of the uh football and we’ve gotten a brief glimpse of some of that in the media allow practice availability we’ll see a little bit more of that on Saturday morning when there’s a full practice allotted to the media but I

Think some of the best information that we can gather in this spring where you’re talking about an intensity level that’s down a couple of notches is to hear what the players have to say and there were a couple of defensive players that spoke with the assembled media

Yesterday Paris Shand as well as Greg pen and I was interested in in some of the things that they had to say these are guys that have worked uh for a number of defensive coordinators guys in Shan’s case that have been at a couple different schools pen seen some highs

Seen some lows and I was just curious as to some of the answers that they had we spoke briefly to Michael Cobell about it yesterday but now we have the sound so we’ll start with Greg Penn the tiger linebacker uh who spoke to the new defensive staff and and what that’s been

Like thus far through Spring football for me it’s a couple familiar faces because they were here in my freshman year so I mean it’s fun I mean those coaches are great having C right back coach Davis is a I mean you’ll see but he’s a he’s a guy he get on you if

You’re messing up things like that but he’s a great coach coach Baker I mean coach Jake a coach Aon all those guys are great they’re really pushing us I think that hearing new voices has been good for guys being able to just play and not thank as much has been really

Good I think that’s very encouraging to hear obviously Blake baker having worked with Greg Penn previous ly is a very very good thing Cory Raymond Raymond is very familiar with this place and so familiarity can do nothing but help but obviously the guy that is got the

Biggest task on his hand is Blake Baker because he’s got to overhaul this entire defense Cory Raymond has his work cut out for him he’s got to deal with a secondary that got gashed time and time again last year go Davis has his work cut out for him they’re they’re low on

Numbers but Blake Baker’s got this entire defense including his linebacker group to worry about so uh Greg Penn spoke to uh what the identity should be under Blake Baker yeah I think we’re trying to build an identity of what we want to be uh coach Baker does a great

Job bringing energy to the room and to the whole defense as a whole us playing with fire playing with enthusiasm just trying to form an identity guys need to understand understand we’re playing a whole new defense so guys are learning new plays and stuff like that and and I

I there’s a lot more energy uh and and um I think a a more Jo personality in Blake Baker as opposed to Matt house but that’s not really of consequence to me I’ve seen very very quiet coordinators like Dave Aranda and Steve enming are do awesome jobs here I’ve seen very loud

And boisterous coaches do great jobs here I know the end wasn’t the best and certainly what happened afterward wasn’t great but John Chavis did a really good job with LSU defense that guy’s yelling and screaming all the time uh so it it doesn’t it’s not necessarily your

Demeanor doesn’t have a ton to do with it it’s just how you communicate with players and how well you can call play so that’s a little bit from Greg Penn on this new staff but Paris Shand who’s entering his fourth year in college football is second here at LSU talked

About working with with the new staff it’s been good with working with the with the new staff I feel like we’re learning a lot of lot of new things um me specifically I feel like I’m I’m definitely developing a better pass rush package um working the edges power long

Arm stuff like that I think it’s going well you know Paris Shand um didn’t have huge role on last year’s team he did play it wasn’t like he he never got in there um but he wasn’t a real impact player and when you talk about what LSU’s defensive front looks like right

Now um he’s a guy that is going to have to play and play a lot especially this spring when they’re as low on numbers as they are I’m more comfortable with if you’re trying talking about winning football games next year winning the game in Los Vegas against USC I’m more

Comfortable putting Paris Shand on the field for significant snaps than I am Dominic McKinley or Gabe reliford now that can change and those two guys may show up here and become unblockable and have to be in there but for the most part asking 18 and 19y olds to go out

There and play defensive line at the highest level is a really really tall ask so what’s in my opinion a likelier scenario if LSU is going to get better play is that Jacobian gillery and Paris Shan and Shawn Wasington some of these older guys are going to have to shoulder

Bigger load than the younger players I know they didn’t have as many stars by their name in recruiting I know they’re not as exciting to talk about on messageboards or Twitter but it’s just a reality they’re men in their early 20s as opposed to guys who just finished up

High school that’s just the way that I see this now what’s going to have to change for LSU and what I think you can get accomplished here uh in in the spring is a mentality shift it makes sense if there are some guys on this defense in this program that are a

Little shook in terms of their confidence with what happened last year that was a lot of points being scored by a lot of different teams a lot of different ways and it’s just natural for that to kind of take a a a hit on your confidence but Shan spoke to kind of the

Mentality that this team’s got to have in the spring we just got to do it together it’s a total sum it’s not any individuals it’s the sum of the team coach Kelly stresses that all the time you’re only as strong as your weakest link you always hear that so it’s just

The total sum of everyone doing the doing the right things together practicing hard every I feel like every team in the country is trying to practice hard but working together taking care of the Brotherhood and that’s that’s a little bit of Coach speak uh it’s not necessarily the most revealing quote

You’ve ever heard but they do need to be together and it can be easy for teams to fracture when things aren’t going very well whether that’s the offense versus the defense the defense versus the offense or someone or just a wedge between the position group and I think

Last year based on the tweets that I was looking at after Matt house and defensive staff were let go it would be tough to call that group together and that’s part of this cycle that I always talk about where confidence Springs a new in the spring and builds throughout the summer into

Camp because nothing really really negative happens when you’re out at practice you just blow the whistle and go do it again losing a game giving up a ton of points on National Television can cause some people to be emotional and relationships to fracture and I think it’s reasonable to suggest that LSU’s

Defense had its issues with camaraderie late in the season whether you want to say that’s within the confines of the team or you want to say that was just a team in the coaching staff or wherever the case may be it manifested itself when this thing wrapped up so to go back

To Greg Penn talk about the defense and and playing a little bit more more quickly defense is flying around having fun uh I see a lot of energy from the guys on defense uh just trying to get better every day really I mean just improving every day as a whole defense

And as a team spring is a time for energy uh not necessarily a time for uh I don’t want to say demands but obviously you’re not playing games it’s a time for guys to get to know each other you can make some mistakes it’s not as high stress it’s go out there and

Play and Learn and that’s it sounds like what Greg Pinn is is speaking to there the last bite here is about the biggest question mark probably on this entire team and that’s the interior defensive line and how LSU finds a way with limited numbers right now and limited

Production returning and a lot of factors stacked against this interior defensive line what’s what type of improvement are we looking at I think Coach Bo is doing a great job there’s a lot of guys in there that are working really well and improving their whole package of of of their game um whether

It’s pass rush taking on doubles the single blocks hitting the Gap like they’re all I could I see a a big improvement from all the guys in there look Bo Davis is a great coach he’s a great recruiter he’s very respected he’s thought of as a great motivator and his

Track record speaks for itself he’s not a magician so there’s going to be some issues on LSU’s interior defensive front and really the defensive front as a whole the question is how well can you mask them what can you you get out of this team the ceiling on this LSU

Defensive front is not very high right now it’s just not now if what you see from Josh pate and the crew over at 247 or some of the if there’s if there’s a a transfer portal Bonanza after Spring football is over I reserve the right to change my judgment but at this point

Right now with the guys they’ve got signed and the guys they’ve got in Camp like the ceiling is there what can you get out of it how close can you get to that that’s just a big question we’ll be talking about for the next three weeks of spring football and certainly as we

Get into August in training camp starts just some thoughts from some LSU defensive players Greg Penn and Paris Shan some more to come a little bit later on we’ll pause take a time out our Thursday show is brought to you by ral’s the official Supermarket of the New

And are the Pelicans real title contenders we’ll discuss 1045 ESPN Baton Rouge you’re listening to the hunt Palmer show brought to you by Rouse’s supermarkets I’ve got uh just devastating news back really really heartbreaking stuff really I did not have a perfect bracket this year wow well how many you how many did you make one okay I only go with one you two no

That’s not true I did one for ESPN I did one for um a Friends Pool I tried to kind of make it the same but I didn’t compare them I think they’re probably similar you had Mississippi State I had Mississippi State they lost by 20 yeah they did they got absolutely annihilated

Um probably not a great pick by me to go against Tomo in March yeah I tried to tell you that a couple days ago but you didn’t listen look Miss state made it tough on LSU to score if you can shut down this LSU team you you final four

You’re right you’re right very disappointing let’s talk Saints Luke Johnson Saints beat reporter for The Advocate down in Nola joins us Fe of the gyms Firearms hotline Luke how are you uh I’m good because I did not fill out out of bracket like the fourth

Straight year uh so I don’t have to deal with any heartbreak of feeling like an idiot which is good because I did not watch a single second of college basketball this year um which you know not now that I think about it having not watched any would have probably made my

Bracket actually good yeah I mean I can’t tell you I watched a lot of kraton this year I saw him play one game and I picked him to go to the final four so it’s just you know whatever floats your boat at this point um let’s talk a

Little uh New Orleans Saints there’s been a lot of news this week comings and goings I can’t really go anywhere other than Chase young to start your thought on the contract when you saw it initially your thought on the contract now that you know of the neck

Issues so when you see it initially you see a a one-year $13 million contract which like felt like it made sense at the point um you know he’s a guy who has kind of been both really really good and uh and disappointing and um you don’t exactly know what you’re going to get

Out of them but like you can see the highs are so high and the talent is so there um so like it made sense it’s a one-year provate deal for him um it could be very beneficial for both sides to where he can reestablish his Market

In 2025 and um you know the Saints could get a 24 yearold guy with super high upside and they’re paying him like the 32nd highest paid defensive end in football um and then you know you the report comes out the following day where he’s gonna have neck surgery and you’re

Like okay well 13 million feels like a lot and then you see the the way the contract breaks down and um you know if if he doesn’t play he doesn’t get that money um so I think after going through that kind of roller coaster of everything I still feel pretty good

About it if he’s on the field you feel pretty good about how um you know to his chances of contributing to this team in an area where they desperately need it their pass rush was atrocious last year yeah it absolutely was and so for the purposes of the rest of this

Discussion let’s just act like Chase Young comes back a week and a half in a training camp he’s ready to go for the opener and he’s on the roster and ready to play what does that mean for Cam Jordan what does that mean for Carl Granderson what does that mean for Chase

Young and the defense yeah I don’t really think it changes a lot um I think cam was at the point in his career where he’s not going to be playing 85% of the snaps anymore um the fact that he did that for as long

As he did is part of why he’s got a Hall of Fame resume um he’s a three down player who could affect the game as a as a pass rusher and as a rush Defender um but I think those days are are gone um you know he needs to be a player who’s

Playing 60% of this snaps um Carl Granderson probably doesn’t need to be out there 85% of the time they’re going to have a rotation um and they’re going to get fresh legs in there as often as they can and they’re going to try to get as many dudes out there to bring the

Quarterback down as they can so like I don’t think you can ever have enough of these guys I don’t think you ever have to worry about how you’re G to get them on the field um you can manufacture ways you know you can get the the NASCAR

Package out there on third Downs where you got three sometimes four defensive ends rushing on the field at once um you’ll be able to find the way to get these guys on the field because this this is it’s like one of the most important things you can do as a defense

Is harass a quarterback it’s why they made Tom Brady’s life miserable for his two years playing in the NFC South um you know when they’re when they’re at their best as a defense they are they’re getting after the quarterback and and Chase young will help him do that

Assuming he’s healthy I agree I still think the deal is a good one uh even with the news of the next surgery we’ll just have to see how things uh how things shake out offensive line we know is a concern for the Saints I think tackle is the biggest concern um but

They bring in oi Udo signs from Minnesota had a quad injury early in the season that required surgery y’all met with him what do he bring into the Saints offensive line room yeah I think he’s uh this is like very much the player they like to sign

On the offensive line um you know they they use the high level draft resources on it I mean you you can look throughout the year as Ryan ramek Andress Pete um Cesar Ruiz Eric McCoy Trevor Penning all these guys have first second round picks um but they fill this unit out with guys

Who are like Ole Udo or like James Hurst or you go back and look at Nick Easton or um uh CIO Kel you guys who can fill in and play multiple positions who have experience playing in the NFL and they’ve got a lot out of these guys in

The past um so that’s I mean it just it just felt like exactly like the Saints kind of signing we’re used to um where you get swing depth uh they they have had starting experience the NFL um who can give you help at multiple positions

If you need it because as we’ve seen I mean last like four years they need it every year you know they they’ve had this kind of rotating cast of characters uh each of those years where they’re dealing with injuries um you have to have guys who are able to step in and

Fill in multiple places and give them that so with uh Udo coming in Chase young signing um does that change how you feel about the first couple of picks they make in the draft now that those two guys are are part of the fold yeah it does I mean I think when I

Was looking at like lot of people I was looking at the draft two weeks ago before the start of free agency um I think you could have pretty easily winow down their top two positions of need as offensive tackle and defensive end or pass rush generally um I think you can

Knock defensive end pass rush down a peg but like they they they have had the opportunity to sign a starting caliber offensive lineman offensive tackle um you know the market was really slow to develop you know these guys are only signing one-year deals uh but they didn’t go out

And get somebody like Tyron Smith who frankly comes with a lot of injury concerns um they didn’t get go out and get somebody like Trent Brown they could still theoretically sign somebody like David bakari um but you know again you’re talking about a guy who’s played

Like 12 games this last three years um I just think that this whole thing is all pointing toward them kind of zeroing in on offensive tackle 14 and I think that’s smart I there’s a lot of really interesting guys in this class and there should be one really good player

Available there at 14 perhaps multiple really good players available at 14 or they can kind of have their their pick and choice yeah it might be only like two guys off the board by the time they at Tackle by the time they uh they they make their pick and there’s probably

Like six guys in this draft who are who are kind of worthy of first round consideration um so yeah I just think that that’s where this whole thing is pointing in so their their one big money signing has been to get a pass rusher they’re not going to have to kind of

Lock themselves into taking one there um you know somebody who you don’t expect is going to be like if Dallas Turner is there 14 like I’d consider taking him and figuring out offensive tackle in the second round um but I think for me that even gets lock knocked down a peg lower

Than maybe even like pass catcher you know like a receiver a tight end who’s available at 14 I think I consider that over defensive end right now one of the spots where the Saints do have a lot of depth is in the defensive backfield Isaac Adam signs with 49ers he is out of

Town but Jonathan Abram and Ugo MTI are coming back how do you feel about that position group today uh I still think it’s kind of a sneaky need especially if if they do decide to move on from Marshon Latimore I mean that’s probably going to be a move that happens this

Summer because the way they structured his contract um yeah I think losing yam uh I don’t know makes me feel a little bit different about that um because yeah I think he played really really well last year I think you can see this team having three guys who

Are capable of playing starting level football at least like average NFL starter and Paulson adbo alonte Taylor and Ike yam um I don’t think they have that right now if they trade Marti Latimore and I think that’s going to have to be um a position that that maybe

They address in the draft if that’s really something they’re going to consider if they if they really think that they could end up moving from Marshon Latimore um because they they can’t like we’ve seen it over and over again like you can be really really deep

In the secondary and by week four like you’re signing guys off the street to go in there and play important reps um so you know it’s it’s I think still a position they have to beef up do you expect any more activity uh between now and the draft any significant activity

It’s a good question because I I think there’s there’s probably a number of guys they’d like to add um but we’ve kind of seen them in in recent years uh wait um and and sign some of these guys after the draft uh if they if they last

That long um you we saw with Tyron Matthew and Jarvis Landry a couple years ago um yeah this is it’s the way you can kind of game the system a little bit and not have to worry about comp picks um and and losing them for signing guys um

So you know it wouldn’t surprise me to see them just kind of Hold Steady and you maybe make a a small addition here or there kind of like the ones they’ve made so far and uh and see what the market looks like for free agents after after the draft in May Luke we

Appreciate some time man we’ll talk next week all right man talk to you soon Luke Johnson covers the Saints for The Advocate that was that’s great stuff I mean this is not the um not the headline material that signing Derek car is or signing a new offense coordinator is but

This is the meat and potatoes of your football team is is addressing some weaknesses in depth on the offensive front and finding a guy here or there that can give you meaningful snaps it’s it sounds more fun to talk about uh you know the the third pick in the draft or

To talk about a new quarterback or a shiny new running back that comes in but the best rosters are built with really strong depth to go with the the headline players and the Saints are in the process of trying to to find those Diamonds in the Rough and we’ll see if

Chase young and Ugo miti and ol adua can can be that for the New Orleans Saints if they can probably looking towards the top of the division if they can’t and these holes persist on the on the roster then you’re probably looking at a team that’s looking at a third place spot in

The division it’s just there are fine margins especially in a division that’s as jam-packed as the NFC South is it’s mediocre but it’s jam-packed um they fine margins there if we were talking about the Saints competing with the Chiefs I wouldn’t be real gung-ho about it but the fact is they’re competing

With the Falcons so here we are um so that’s a great look at things from Luke we appreciate his time each and every Thursday well pause take a time out when we come back Joe Healey D1 baseball’s SEC extra team talking some Southeastern Conference baseball entering the second weekend of conference play you’re

Over at ral’s LSU in Florida in a huge three-game set from the box starting tomorrow night a couple of SEC West showdowns tonight with Arkansas and Auburn as well as Mississippi State at Texas A&M to talk about it all we go to our guy Joe Healey part of the SEC extra

Team on D1 baseball he’s with us every Thursday and joins us now on the gyms Firearms hotline Joe how are you not too bad hunt how about yourself doing quite well um curious your uh your most impressive Series win in the SEC last weekend I gotta go state right I mean

There’s just so much uh that goes into it’s a rivalry series it’s you know all the pent up frustration that states had the last couple years and it was the way in which they did it I mean sure they lost a game but my goodness they came a

Couple of plays away from winning that one too and then the other two games of the series they just kind of ran away with things at a certain point and and that’s they not only won the games they won games in ways in which they weren’t

Capable of doing last year like the they would not have been able to pitch enough to hold off even even in a compromised LSU lineup long enough to to do what they did so they got the pitching last weekend they got the offensive performance uh which was a concern going

Into that weekend for state so that comes off to me as the most impressive there were some others but they weren’t as surprising right I mean Vanderbilt sweeping Auburn while very impressive is something that was always going to be on the table so I think you have to look to

The Mississippi schools and I’ll take State Series win for that uh honor how big of concern was that for alu’s pitching staff I’m not overly concerned about it at least from the Hans stand point of it because there were some you know unearned runs and sure gave up 10 hits

But I’m not concerned about it from that standpoint and then with her I think we know that you and I talked about a bunch we we know who he is um I wonder if maybe LSU just kind of caught a team that was always going to win that series

You know and it was just kind of feeling themselves um so I’m gonna maybe take a step back and take a breath and not be too worried about it we can have a different conversation this weekend but also understand fla is going to run into some baseball and hit some home runs

Think you can pitch to them I really do the back half of their lineup isn’t the most impressive I guess especially in situations where they’re putting a lineup out there against left-handed pitching it tends to be really light when they do that so I do

Think you can pitch to them but I mean you’re facing kagon and Kobe Shelton and Luke Heyman and and Tyler shellnut they’re they’re going to run into some balls so it’s a little bit of a a sliding scale but I’m gonna allow another couple weeks before I start to

Get overly worried about that we’ll talk a little bit more LSU in Florida here as we get into this coming weekend but last one I was impressed with Alabama Series win over Tennessee your thoughts on that yeah if You’ have told me that okay you’re going to get a bad start from Ben

Hess and you’re gonna lose that game I’d have been like well that’s all she wrote Because that’s that’s kind of their formula and so I I give a lot of credit to them just mentally and being able to to fight back and and win that series

The way they did and so it gives an air of legitimacy to them we’ve got them ranked like 11th in the nation I’m scrolling up make sure that’s right as I tell you yep um I don’t know if they’re actually that good to be honest with you but they’ve earned that spot because

That was a really gutty Conference win and and here’s the thing I mean you and I talk have talked before about kind of the math in the SEC where it’s like you need 13 or 14 to get on the bubble you need 15 or 16 to be on the hosting

Bubble and anything above like 17 or 18 like you’re talking National seed um picking off a series like this yes it was a home series but if Tennessee had won that series none of us would have been shocked so they’ve kind of changed the math a little bit to where now okay

Like it feels like now Alabama can maybe start to set its sights on something a little bit a little bit bigger because we know that they can compete against a Tennessee team and maybe the Tennessee pitching staff isn’t isn’t all that and what we we might have predicted it might

Be when we got excited about Russell and and Cy pitching well and Drew beam being Drew beam but that offense might end up being the best one in the conference when it’s all said and done so that was definitely impressive last weekend I’m excited to watch a little bit of

Baseball tonight sandwiched around some basketball as well two SEC West showdowns as Arkansas goes to Auburn and Mississippi State heads to Texas A&M let’s start with with auburn they’re in a kind of a situation that I think LSU could find themselves in 8 days from now if the Tigers can’t win against Florida

And then all of a sudden you look up in the first one is Hagen Smith at bomb next week and that’s you’re going to be an underdog pretty significantly there Auburn’s behind the eight ball they got swept and here comes Hagen Smith uh to the plains um how big is this weekend

For uh for the this Auburn team yeah I mean huge you can’t get swept I mean that’s just all there is to it um and maybe you can pick off you know a I mean Mason Molina has shown to be beatable he’s had a couple of starts that haven’t

Been great and in the middle game they’ve been doing a little bit of a piggyback with with tiger and will McIntyre and you and I are familiar with Will McIntyre’s game he’s a nice piece he’s a veteran he’s steady but he can get got so I I think Auburn will get a

Game here wouldn’t shock me if they win the series because that’ be the most Auburn thing that’s ever happened um but but you’re right in that you come in there and you’re like well I mean what do you do with higen Smith right I mean

It in in the game that he starts and I thought it was interesting too that they went ahead and started him on Thursday instead of kind of playing around with the rotation given the Thursday start I appears Auburn did they’re starting Conor McBride tonight although Auburn’s got enough questions in its rotation

That I think there’s also some element of that to to not necessarily just going with the rotation they’ve they’ve been using with alip at the front um but yeah Arkansas is just a buzz sell on the mound I mean Missouri is not going to be

Good this year um but I mean you hold any sec team that has scholarship players on the roster to one run in 27 Innings you’re doing something right yeah that was the the part that that obviously stood out they were able to do that Mississippi State and A&M is very

Very fascinating to me I watched little the aies yesterday Lavalette and and uh and um mcgomery both hit hit monster home runs and now LSU managed to wake Hunter hens up and Dakota Jordan’s been wide awake so there’s some real bats that are going to take the field in in

College Station on uh tonight yeah absolutely and this is I’m most fascin with the match up here between State’s offense and aam’s pitching staff from both sides of it for State it’s like okay how real is what we saw last weekend did you catch LSU at a

Good time or are you are you just kind of coming awake as an offense is Hines gonna you know gonna continue to do that does David Mara stay hot uh what about does a you know Aaron DS is is he a guy who you can maybe put in the lineup and

Get a spark from and then on A&M side the numbers were so good on the mound leading up to last weekend and so was it just that they ran into a Florida offense that as I men can just run into some balls or is this a situation where

Uh Hey pitch ability really wins when you’re facing non-conference competition when you’re an SEC team and then maybe when you start to face some physical offenses with the SEC Strike Zone which tends to get called a little smaller um does that stuff kind of start to erode

Away and what you’re left with is a pitching staff that has good stuff but not necessarily great stuff and their pitching staff ends up being something between what it was last year which is problematic and being what it was the first four or five weeks of season which

Was excellent Joe he is with us part of the SEC extra team on D1 baseball the highway to Hoover podcast always available wherever you get your podcast and is a great listen each and every week it’s Joe and and Mark ethers Joe joins us on Thursdays all right let’s

Talk a little LSU in Florida National Championship Series rematch uh tell me about Cade Fischer this year the numbers are not great but we know he’s got a ton of talent yeah he’s had a weird year so I’m not going to sit here and argue that

The the ER is is totally out of line like he’s just not he’s certainly not been a true Friday guy he’s not even really been someone that if this continues he will not be in the rotation come you know early April right however I will say his peripherals aren’t

Terrible like he struck out 37 and walked five in 22 and two-thirds Innings opponents are hitting 295 against him which is high but this is also the SEC like I don’t know like you you seey like Drew Bean usually has like a 265 or 270 batting average against so it’s really

Not that far off from being acceptable so I’m not entire having not watched all of the starts I’m not entirely sure what’s happening here but I can guarantee you that he’s not been good enough he’s going to have to be better especially if they’re going to throw him

On Fridays and um he’s talented I guess they know that hey if we need to throw him back in a bullpen roll he’s proven himself in that one but I think we’ve talked about this before Florida’s a little bit landlocked here where it’s like what are your other Friday options

Because kags is complicated because of the two-way piece and then do you really want to throw leam Peterson who by the way hasn’t really been better in a Friday spot or do you need to find somebody else altogether which is a whole another problem because honestly

It’s not as if Florida’s teaming with a bunch of relievers that you have a bunch of confidence could move into the rotation and be good yeah like I’ve never thrown 102 pitches in an SEC weekend game but I just can’t imagine that kagon would do that on Fridays and

Then feel ready to roll and hit two home runs on Saturday maybe he is he’s super human but it feels like Sunday’s where he kind of needs to be yeah and and there’s a long history of of this kind of being the move with with Elite

Two-way guys you know you pitch them on Sunday because then you’ve got the day off and then you could maybe DH them on Tuesday if you really want and give him a little bit of Break um so yeah he’s kind of stuck there and so then you

Start to okay Peterson is probably a no because he’s struggling and he’s a freshman do you play with the idea of hey we thought neie was gonna be a starter do we try that well I mean he pitched better last weekend but he really wasn’t pitching that well um is

It Ryan Slater maybe who’s throwing like almost starters Innings as a believer like maybe that’s an option but this is the big picture problem with Florida this year is that they’ve got such a young inexperienced pitching staff we’ve loved the high-end Talent how could you not just in terms of raw talent but

They’re leaning on a lot of freshman in the bullpen this year so it’s it’s not as if they have a whole bunch of cards to play the way in which even LSU like if they got into trouble it’s like well we’ll just flip the ball to Aken hous or

Jaden Coleman and like maybe it’s not as good but at least we know a little bit of what we’re getting Florida doesn’t even really have that luxury yeah it’s going to be a fascinating one it should be an awesome environment all weekend we’re get really good weather on

Saturday and Sunday here in Baton Rouge so this should be a nice weekend at the box and hopefully LSU can get it done last series I wanted your thoughts on nice Series win for Miss at home last weekend they head to Knoxville to play a Tennessee team that I think is is really

Good how do you handicap that one yeah I think this could be a weekend where I do think Old Miss is is better I do think they played a lot more solid last weekend but whereas I’m more intrigued by States upside right now I do think there’s an opportunity that this weekend

That we go into this and Tennessee just kind of runs will miss off the field I I do think that’s in play here because Tennessee is is going to come in like you know just a little bit pissed off about last weekend lindsy Nelson stadium

Is going to be packed with a bunch of fans that are going to create like an angry bees atmosphere because they’re just right on top of the field um so I do think there’s an opportunity for Tennessee especially against Old Miss pitching which look they got great Bullpen work last weekend but the

Starting rotation is just still kind of okay it’s not like they’re really setting the world on fire so I’m intrigued to see how well miss fights in this thing I think if you get a game you feel great but a sweep where Tennessee clearly comes off looking like the much

Better team is is definitely in play Joe we appreciate the time enjoy some baseball this weekend appreciate it hun talk to you next week Joe Healey D1 baseball’s SEC extra team you’re looking for your baseball content no better place to find it than Joe Hy and Mark

Somewhere near you here’s the question Beck okay and Jordan I’ll get your thoughts on this too you’re new to the live at lunch crew but I think you’ve got a pretty good handle on it how much money would I have to give Jimmy at with

A check to not watch nor gamble on any basketball for the next three weeks how much money would that take a lot I don’t know how much but Jordan um like if I wrote him a check for $4,000 no I don’t think that would be enough well when you’re dealing with

Jimmy you’re dealing with a high roller so I mean got to back the Brinks truck up I don’t want him cut but like if not my money here but could I would he not do it for $6,000 are we talking about 25 Grand to set this whole thing I think

We’re talking about at least um at least six figures or five figures five five say six figures at least he’s not doing it for 75k we got a problem atast five I think only knowing them for two months at this point I would say there’s not a

I I’ll take that back there’s no amount of dollars on this planet for to you would have to take the FBI to go and extract him from the B Revis right now got to get a SWAT team in there to the boat to get Jimmy out of the book you

Got to call some some look I’m jealous of those guys I think that’s an awesome uh awesome thing they got for the next four days watching in the sports book and there’s the there are a lot of Hoops for those that have not been keeping up today the first loser of the NCAA

Tournament I call it the first loser I don’t care about Tuesday and Wednesday the first Thursday loser of the tournament Mississippi State Bulldogs go down by 18 points 6951 they lose to Michigan State Tom iso’s team will move on uh they’re going to play North Carolina which is going to

Be a blue blood matchup in the second round one versus 9 assuming North Carolina gets it done against Wagner here um scores that are ongoing right now Duan leads BYU by three under 20 second to go in that one kraton has extended its lead over akan thankfully

They’re up 14 I’ve got kraton in the final four we’re going to need them to go ahead and beat akan in the first round it appears that they’re going to do so or they’re well on their way right now up 14 with 14 minutes and 20 seconds

To go Arizona is beating Long Beach by six of the half that’s a 15-2 matchup uh in the west and Long Beach is an interesting case here Beck because they fired their coach before the conference tournament and uh said you can coach him if you want and he went out there and

Won the conference tour tournament now they’re playing Arizona straight up so we’re going to talk about that on take her to leave it a little bit more for sure I mean that’s a very odd circumstance it is I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that before yeah I mean

Look they let stat coach the season out I mean they don’t let this guy and he’s going to win his conference tournament uh North Carolina and Wagner just underway 6 to3 in the early going there um under 17 minutes to go uh next up on True TV Morehead State and Illinois from

Up in Omaha sec’s back in action at 3:00 Oregon and South Carolina will play Nevada and Dayton at 3:30 uh Colorado State and Texas at 550 Oakland and Kentucky Kentucky will play tonight it’ll be a nice little double dip there Oakland and Kentucky as well as MCN

State and Gonzaga will go at it right there pretty similar time frames Oakland and Kentucky are in Pittsburgh and MCN and Gonzaga are out in Salt Lake City so uh the rest of the games tonight South Dakota State and Iowa State St Peters and Tennessee uh NC State Texas Tech

Sanford Kansas uh Drake and Washington state so loaded loaded day I we said this yesterday I think it’s the best uh best four days in sports because of the time it lasts how much action there is how much interest there is even the nons sports fans seems to be invested because

They’ve got a bracket somewhere where they’re trying to win a 100 bucks in gift cards or something so um interesting day uh hadn’t had any any high drama just yet um but we’re we’re off and running in March Mt it’s miss any the first hour of the show catch it

A.m. eastern right here on ESPN Radio ESPN 2 and ESPNU ladies and gentlemen may I direct your attention to something quite extraordin very now the hunt Palmer show The Hunt Palmer show on 1045 ESPN Baton Rouge brought to you by Rouse’s supermarkets live from the mercedesbenz Baton Rouge Studios this is hunt Balmer hour number two Thursday edition of The Hunt Palmer show working towards the weekend I’m betting there a few took the afternoon off try to watch some basketball I’m thinking that’s probably possible we won’t have to go into a long vasectomy conversation like the boys on the morning show did this morning but

Sure there’s a few of you that are ducking out of work to catch some hoops and I don’t blame you it’s a fun day to watch some basketball we’ll watch some baseball this weekend LSU in Florida in a rematch of the National Championship Series in a matchup of two of the storyi

Programs in uh in the SEC and certainly Mississippi State probably kickstarted it and Vanderbilt’s had some great great success as well miss has a national championship to their name and um South Carolina had a great run under Ray Tanner and I wouldn’t suggest that Florida’s baseball success dates back a

Long way but since Kevin asan’s been there they’ve been among the elite in the sport and certainly LSU is running into them in the National final two different times and uh last year it came out on the right end and a lot of the guys who were on the field that day have

Moved on but a lot of the guys that were on the field that day are in The Dugout that day are back around and we’re going to see really high Level Baseball this weekend inside Alec Buck stadium and it’s a big series for LSU really need to

Take care of your business on your home field um this team that LSU has is is not as bulletproof as last year’s felt and you’re just going to have to fight and scrap and Claw your way through the first half of this SEC weekend I think LSU should be able to handle themselves

In Columbia Missouri I’m not petrified to play Auburn I’m not petrified down the line to play Old Miss but some of these teams you’re going to play here over the next well these four these four teams you’re about to play are really really tough and so you’ve got an opportunity at home you

Needs to to quit themselves nicely we’ve got the starting pitching matchups both teams have announced them the SEC asks that the uh the coaches do that before noon the day before the series and both coaches have announced they’re going to keep things the same there was some thought that things could shake up

Because Florida’s starting rotation has not been great this far and LSU got lit up a little bit last week not got lit up a lot last week but they’re going to keep it the same Kate fiser is going to go on Friday for Florida Liam Peterson is going to go on Saturday for

Florida and Jack kagon is going to go on Sunday for Florida I’ll give you the scouting well not the scouting report but some thoughts on those guys we’ll do a little bit deeper dive tomorrow uh but Luke Coleman will go for LSU on Friday Gage jump will go on Saturday and thater

Herd will go on Sunday Kade fiser uh took a very natural progression to Florida’s Friday night guy he was a very very highly thought of High School pitcher 6’4 200 lb great left arm came into the program at Florida and because they had a really really talented front end of the rotation you

Saw him last year you know uren Wald was his first round pick um he was able to ease it and he did some long relief he pitched a little in the midweek and he became a big time Bullpen guy and he pitched a couple of times in the College World Series

Final and because he’s that highly thought of as a high school recruit and he eased in and was very successful as a freshman last year you think okay it’s your time for two years you head up this rotation and he goes out against St John’s in the opener and gives up five

Hits and six runs five of them earned against St John’s and then he was a little better against Colombia he struck out 10 in five innings but they about five hits in those five innings and two runs then they go to Coral Gables and he faces

Miami can’t get out of the fifth inning gives up five hits and three earned runs five strikeouts no walks St Mary’s two weeks ago he just goes five innings seven hits and five runs four of them earned and then against Texas A&M against a really good lineup that is a

Really good lineup for Texas A&M six Innings six hits six runs all of them earned 10 strikeouts in a walks you kind of get the picture like he’s striking out a lot of guys to this point as if you were listening in the first hour to

Joe hey he’s struck out 37 in 22 and 2/3 he’s only walked five but his batting average against is bumping up against 300 he’s giv up six doubles and four homers his ER is 7.94 he just hasn’t been very good and you look at Luke Holeman and

He’s been brilliant up until last week when he wasn’t I will be very very curious how Luke Holman deploys his arsenal of pitches tomorrow in terms of how many Breaking balls he threw it seemed to me and I don’t have the numbers in front of me um that he threw

More breaking balls last week and I don’t know if that was by Design if that was what felt good in the bullpen if the fast ball just felt really bad he threw a lot of breaking balls I’m curious to see how that shakes out on its face

Based on track record LSU’s got an advantage on the mound Tomorrow based on Talent it’s probably a lot closer than that fact I would probably argue bisher maybe a little more talented but that’s an opportunity Liam Peterson will go on Saturday for Florida Liam Peterson is thought to be the best freshman talent

That got to college baseball he and cam Johnson were obviously in that discussion and we know what’s happened with Cam Johnson early in his career they’re babying him a lot and that’s okay Florida not baby leam Peterson he’s a 65 205lb right-hander who was a weekend starter right out of the gate

And he was good against North Florida he was good against Colombia in those two outings seven Innings of shut out baseball Miami got to him a little bit scored five earn runs and five innings St Mary got to him a little bit scored four earn runs and four Innings

And A&M crushed him two innings five hits six earn runs no strikeouts no walks so it’s been trending backwards if you just look at Liam Peterson’s numbers against the high major teams he has faced Miami and A&M you’re talking about two starts seven Innings 11 earned runs seven strikeouts and two

Walks he’s a talent but he might not have figured it out quite yet and LSU’s got Gage jump which we felt really good about entering last weekend I still feel good about but certainly Mississippi State tagged him a little bit I’d probably rather have jump going in

That game but we’ll see so I’ve given a slight Edge to LSU in the first two games now you’ll be very familiar with game three’s matchup you saw it in Omaha Nebraska in the biggest game of the season Jack kagon will go on Sunday for Florida that’s your herd will go for

LSU if all things were equal and he was just a pitcher Jack kagon would be starting tomorrow because he has started four games he is 2-0 he’s got an RA under two at 1.77 he’s got 34 strikeouts in 20 Innings his batting average against is 132 he’s been

Fantastic he’s throwing way more strikes there’s still a walk issue he leads the team with 13 walks 13 walks in 20 Innings is not awesome but it’s better than it could have been you remember last year in the open or in the first pitchy threw of the College World Series

Final he hit Kade boso in the backside but they can’t really move him because he’s maybe the most dangerous hitter in college baseball and if he starts on Friday and throws 114 pitches how ready is he to get up and hit you two home runs on

Saturday I I don’t know that he is so you kind of need to throw him on Saturday on on Sunday and they will and Thatcher herd’s got to be better there’s no doubt seven earn runs three of which coming on the three-run home R by Dakota Jordan followed up immediately by the

Home Run by Hunter Hines last week but he’s got to be better and Joe Healey said something that was very interesting to me in the first hour and if you missed it I invite you to go back and check that out we talked about the entire SEC but spent a little time on

LSU in Florida as well as LSU Mississippi State he said that Florida’s lineup is really scuffling against left-handed pitching well what’s behind door number one all of usu’s left-handed pitching and thater herd’s not one of those you might have a fairly quick hook this weekend for some of for for for herd

Depending on how ready to go Herring and aenh Housen and Anderson are ready like if those guys are ready to go they can give you a lot of innings aenh can absolutely get you eight n outs Herring has shown he’s absolutely capable getting you 9 10 12 outs we know Kate

Anderson can get you 15 outs he’s already been stretched out so depending on how the first two games go and you do everything you can to win any game that’s in front of you in SEC play I’m okay if you got to pitch aenh and Herring and Anderson and uoa to win the

First game do it give me a win but if you kind of trade punches you win one you lose one and you get to Sunday and some of that left-handed pitching is ready to go thater herd will not be giving up seven runs for me he may give up four

But at that point we’re going to go to the bullpit when you think of Florida you think of dominant pitching you think of singer in feda you think of last year with Hurston walro you think of Logan Shaw AJ Puck like they’ve had absolutely dominant dudes at the front of the rotation as

Long as Kevin o Sullivan’s been there but this pitch staff has not been very good now the bats on the other hand which we will talk to about tomorrow trouble a lot of homers but when I stack this up I like LSU with Homan against Fischer I like

LSU with jump against Peterson and we’ll see what LSU has left but if you need to come off of herd and go with some left-handed pitching against Jack kagon who’s on the other side hopefully that’s available to you big big weekend man with would be awesome if fell us you

Could find a way to get two wins this weekend I’d feel a whole lot better than I do right now I’m a little bummed about the Mississippi State weekend I’m over it I’m over it it’s a bit of a bummer I had LSU penciled in for two wins there

Need to try to find a way to get two because two is going to be really difficult next week in fville but you never really know LSU last year was as good a team as we’ve seen wear those uniforms and they got beat by Mississippi State and Auburn so

You know it’s just uh it’s a weird sport it’s why I love it and they’ll crank it up tomorrow at 7 o’clock inside Alec Box Stadium Kade fiser against Luke hullman we’ll go deeper into this matchup tomorrow got some thoughts on some of Florida’s hitters and what LSU needs to

Do there and we’ll try to get uh get in touch with our guy Nick delatori down in Gainesville who covers the Gators and get a better better look at a team that he covers very very closely our Thursday shows are brought to you by ral’s when

We come back Chris Blair the voice of the Tigers putting a bow on basketball talking a little bit of baseball that’s next the hunt Palmer show in times of need get a full list of phone numbers websites and other important emergency information on the Demco stormwatch page at 1045 espn.com e e e

E e e e inviting you to join us for Thursday’s AFR Kendall Rogers of D1 baseball is with us we’ll take a look at the weekend ahead in college baseball and are the Pelicans real title contenders we’ll discuss one of 5 ESPN Baton Rouge the field is set for the 2024 NCAA men’s tournament as you guys know it’s already started first round coverage will start tonight at 6 and Friday night at 6 then catch second round coverage starting Saturday at noon and Sunday morning at 11: right here on 1045 yes

Baton rge you’re listening to the hunt Palmer show brought to you by Rouse’s supermarkets shout out to our guy Kate wasan for getting everything set up to get uh you live action from the NCAA tournament when we come off the air on Thursday and Friday 6 o’clock and it’s

Back mention there on Saturday you can uh you can catch some NCAA tournament action as I look up at the screens right now North Carolina up 10 on Wagner about halfway through the first half and kraton uh taking it to akan they are up 17 points with about five minutes to go

So looks like my blue jays will be moving on see you in the final four kraton love my folks from Omaha go Blue Jays uh we’ll talk some uh some LSU football here as we did in the first segment of the show today I heard from

Greg Pinn and Paris Shand and um Paris Shand is a guy that I I don’t think about a lot when I think about LSU’s defensive line but a guy that I think probably needs to step up and and be a factor for this team and in so doing

He’ll have a a new defensive line coach to work with that is of course bod so per Shan was asked about Bo Davis and having him as his position coach we had Pete last year and he’s he’s a great coach but he came in a little bit late

So it was it was a little bit of adjustment last season and I feel like having the coaches in from the spring it’s it’s not really the coach themselves it’s more so I feel like the longevity of having that person to teach you from the spring through to the

Season to the fall really helps and that’s obvious I mean LSU’s defensive line coach position has just been uh very in flux since Brian Kelly got here you had Jamar Kane and then he moves on and then you have Jimmy Lindsay and he’s trying to coach the guys and then he

Gets sick so you’re moving John jansick around and trying to figure that out and that’s not really why they were brought on staff Then Pete Jenkins comes in in the middle of the year to try to kind of rescue things and it’s just been it’s just been in flux for the entirety of

The time and now you’ve got Bo Davis who’s going to come in he’s going to be there he’s going to be the coach day and day out from the spring have some time like I talked about at the top of the show like this is just seems like such a

Valuable time because cuz you don’t have to worry about getting ready for a game or game planning or any any the depth chart or anything you’re just trying to coach guys technique and make them better and and that is the first step of this thing and once you can get that

Technique implemented then all of a sudden you can go into game planning and and feel like guys can execute it because you’ve been there teaching them every step of the way obviously coach peoples is a another coach that’s been brought in he’s going to deal with your your Edge rushers there which peris

Shan’s going to play a little bit outside as well and he talked about having coach peoples and what that’s going to do for the position he just wants us to play fast and work our hands attack the the tackles it’s a lot of it’s a lot of just attacking it’s a it’s

It’s a mentality thing I feel like with Coach peoples and he wants he wants us to really attack I think he’s he’s doing a great job in our room and I feel like our room is is really deep and we’re going to have a lot of production I feel

Like it’s interesting um and you hear that that attack and being aggressive and I was listening to TB this morning they were talking about how there’s a bit of a read and react situation with the LSU defense last year Blake Baker once guys moving towards the football so

Um hopefully a big change coming for LSU on the defensive side of things Chris Blair boys of the Tigers joins us every Thursday we have him now on the gyms Farms hotline course toward uh lovely Nashville and Starkville last weekend and not going to Gainesville this weekend the Florida Gator will come to

Us how was your uh your week in Nashville and Starkville sir oh well it didn’t go the way anybody wanted it to go um and if you want to go from one extreme to the other that’s exactly I went from one Ville to another Ville uh quite different quite the contrast but

Uh hey yes the best news is LSU and Florida playing and it’s being played in Baton Rouge so uh couldn’t be better than that we’ll talk about that here shortly um I do want to get your thoughts on the basketball season as we

Kind of put a bow on at the NIT um first round signals the end of the tiger Seasons they lose on Tuesday against North Texas what will you take from this basketball season year two under coach McMahon well steps forward um you know and I know everybody says that and you

Know Matt told me immediately following uh the announcement of you know the NIT birth that look that’s not what we’re here to celebrate it’s what not what we came here to do is celebrate nit uh play uh but considering where they were a year ago uh second in the

Power six with plus seven you know improving in the conference record um you know going nine and n uh the Finish they had to end the season I mean there’s a lot of positives I think the biggest challenge now is you know in this day and age roster

Management and that’s not just a basketball thing and that’s not just an LSU thing uh you’re hoping you can get through this portal window that ends sometime in early May and have maybe four guys maybe five you know that are going to be part of this team this year

And next year so that now you’re adding two SES now you’re adding maybe three or four that fit your needs in the transfer portal and it’s not a total roster overhaul because again that was the biggest thing this year uh is is trying to instill what is expected to be an LSU

Basketball player and you know I think these guys bought into it I mean they they didn’t quit I mean there were times they were outmatched talent-wise there were games where they didn’t play their best but it wasn’t for a lack of effort so that’s kind of been established now

You hope you can not have to turn every body over and create a whole new roster for next year and if they can do that I think then the steps they took this year are going to reap some rewards next year did you think they were going to pull

That comeback off in the NIT they’ve done it so many times and they got down a ton and then they they made that Furious run under a minute you think they were GNA finish it yeah I mean I thought they had a chance I mean you

Know when Ward missed the three and then the airball three from right I thought that those two right there those two shots go in either one of them go in and who knows game is on on uh but when those came up empty you looked at the

Clock and you thought maybe uh you know down 18 they certainly made it a valant effort had a chance to cut it to a one possession game on two occasions and just couldn’t just couldn’t get it done couldn’t get the shots to go down so uh yeah there’s always a possibility

Because I’ve been fooled a handful of times this season let’s head on to Bas baseball now as LS you a welcome in Florida last time we saw those two teams go at it it was an enjoyable one up there in Omaha Nebraska what are your memories of of that College World Series

In its entirety now that we can kind of reflect back on it I knew one of the things that stands out hun is when coach Jay Johnson says they compartmentalize wins and losses and put whatever happened the day before behind them I will never doubt him again uh that’s

What I remember I remember that long walk we were you know staying in the hotel that’s closest to the stadium there in Omaha and that was a long quiet walk uh on Saturday you know after the second game of the championship series and I’ll never forget I was walking down

My room for some reason they always put the radio guy at the very end of the hallway and and this happened to be a hotel that is almost like the Pentagon it’s about a f minute walk from the elevators to my room and as I was going

Down the hallway number of the guys were outside their rooms um you could tell they were dejected I passed each one and trying to be Mr positivity we’ll get them tomorrow guys and they all looked at me matter of factly and said yes sir

And I was stunned at how it was not they were not as jeed as I was or thought that they were and again we all found out the next day uh what would come to fruition so that’s one of the things I took away is it doesn’t matter what

Happened yesterday and again Jay preaches that every day good or bad um you know you can’t take the runs with it you can’t take the hits with it you’ve got to be ready mentally focused and physically ready to go every single game and you know I think that’s going to be

Important for this team it’s a different team these guys are going to have to learn those lessons uh but goodness knows the computer which I put in air quotes did not do LSU any favors when it comes to scheduling it’s amazing how this computer does that in the SEC

Office uh but it’s going to be quite the gauntlet here over the next several weeks so they’re going to have to have short memories yeah well hopefully they have got a short memory about the uh the pitching that went on in Starkville last weekend uh Jay’s talked a couple of

Times to the media about how confident he is that Luke Holman’s ready to bounce back and knows that he’s going to be better than he was on on Friday do you share that confidence yeah I mean I I don’t think any of the who started Gage

Or or or Luke or or even patcher for that matter was really on I mean I’ve seen all three pitch much better um and Jay’s contention was this is an aggressive Mississippi State offense there’s not a lot of holes in the Bulldogs lineup um and and and they

Wanted to tantalize him so to speak by having location in and outside even a baseball or two off the plate because he felt like they would go after it and it it just seemed to me that the command of the breaking stuff didn’t keep him off

Balance enough they were able to pick up on it when it did hang it hang hung right over the plate and then they weren’t able to locate enough of those inside and outside strikes to get them to chase the stuff outside and again I know that they can locate better than

That so I mean again I give Mississippi State a ton of credit I think they’re going to be much better than people thought they would be and frankly they’re playing with a chip on their shoulder probably unlike anybody else in the league uh you know being two years

Removed from a national title and just horrible season a year ago um so again I think they can pitch better and goodness knows they’re going to have to so to me that’s the thing to look for beginning on Friday night is how does Homan bounce back and I and again I have no

Indication that a he can pitch way better than he did last week and you know again that’s kind of been the focus as Jay said and it goes back to my earlier point I mean what happened last week’s not going to help you it’s not

Going to hurt you uh but you’re going to have to certainly be prepared against the Florida lineup that many people left for dead to weeks ago because they lost a couple of non-conference games but I learned a long time ago when it comes to SEC baseball until mid late April early

May sometimes you don’t quite know how good a team can be yeah I think both these teams can be really good they’ve just had their bumps early in the season Florida’s just seem to come on Tuesday and Wednesday far more often they can’t win any of the midweek games but they’ve

Been pretty good on the weekend a guy that’s been good on the midweek and the weekends offensively is Jared Jones for LSU hit another home run back on Tuesday it’s been nice to see his production as a sof more after kind of losing his job

In the middle of last year yeah I really have been impressed I mean you know one of the things that he we all knew he had to improve on was was reading the spinner and handling breaking pitches uh teams just gave him a steady diet of it

Down the stretch of last season even into the postseason uh and I think he’s done a much better job of doing that being a little more selective being able to pick it up a little early and if they do make a mistake pitch even with a off

Speed I mean we we’ve seen what what he can do with it I think offensively Jared’s playing great I’ve been really impressed with what he’s done uh at first base and and again that’s having said that knowing that we had maybe one of the best defensive first baseman in

Quite a while in the entire uh college baseball World and Trey Morgan so uh Jay told me earlier in the year he said hey look just don’t be Trey Morgan you’re not Trey Morgan you don’t have to be and so I think he’s done a good job and and

And continues to get better at first and then you know Tommy White some people thought maybe he wasn’t off to the best start as far as what he was doing the plate but uh if there was one bright spot last weekend it certainly was Tommy

And on top of that he made some really impressive plays at third one that I think secured the win on Saturday night nine to eight yeah double play was a special special play I I think a lot of times that we fans like the the big talent and the super velocity and that

That excites us and that’s the guy that we want to see I think coaches who’s the guy that I can trust and it sounds like to me the Nate aenh has kind of won that battle in the bullpen would you expect to see him closing games or do you think

Jay will go to at the first sign of trouble over the weekend yeah one of the things that Jay mentioned to me Monday night on his show was that you know if he’s got to get in a foxhole and it’s to the death you know he Nate’s the

First guy he’s calling on that that tells you how important he is and there was a there was a stretch there on Saturday in game three where again LSU tied it up and then it was almost if you could just get to a certain point stay within Striking Distance you know aenh

Housen was going to be the guy he was looking to and then quickly the game spiraled got out of hand uh and he decided to go against that but yeah without question I think we’ll see a good bit of Nate this weekend against Florida uh because I think at the moment

Out of the bullpen and there’s been some really good performances don’t get me wrong but I think if you asked which is the guy um you know we had one the last two years that was kind of his guy in Riley Cooper I think Nate aenh Housen is

Now that guy we’ll see you at the Box on Friday night Chris thanks man you got it hunt sorry for being late I’ll be better next week it’s all good he’s the voice of the Tiger here’s Chris Blair he’ll be on the call all three games this weekend

They will hand it right to you it’s convenient as could possibly be love the folks over at Rouses and appreciate them for bringing you our Thursday shows um couple of SEC baseball games tonight to get into um and I’m I was curious what Mississippi state was going to do with

Their rotation we saw last week Nate Dome was announced that he wasn’t going to pitch so they went with Evan sieri uh on on Friday against LSU I said that was a huge advantage to LSU and the Tigers did hit a couple home runs off of him but obviously the pitching faltered and

They were weren’t able to stay in the ball game and I was curious what state would do now with a little more notice that Dome wouldn’t be around and they’re not making any changes they’re going to go with Evan sierry tonight at Texas A&M they’ll go with uh with Steven on Friday

And they’ll go with dangelo sja on Saturday of course with the moving up to Thursday it’s tougher to move guys around um but it feels like they’ve kind of backloaded their rotation if you watched LSU and Mississippi State play last weekend you realize that Cal Steven and certainly dangelo sja have better

Stuff than Evan sier but you know you were trying to replace Nate Dome and you go to a guy who’s more of a bullpen arm so I’m curious how this works out in the weekend series series at Texas A&M um it looks like LSU woke up Hunter Henry

Which is Hunter Hines which is Hunter Henry was a tight end at Arkansas Hunter Hines at uh at Mississippi State and then obviously Dakota Jordan’s been fantastic Jay Lavalette and braad mcgomery I might argue are the best onew punch offensively in all of college baseball mcgomery was in fantastic it’s

Um at Stanford for a couple of years and you look at at Lavalette who’s one of the best freshman in the country last year one time LSU commit I might add um and and that’s a fierce um Fierce one-two punch offensively there are other guys in that Texas A&M lineup that

Uh that can hurt you it’s it’s the Texas A&M pitching that I’m curious about because it was sparkling in the pre-conference and then they went to Gainesville and got hit and that’s not to be unexpected like we know that Florida can hit they’ve got a lot of

Guys with proven track records that can really swing the bat so was it a case of A&M being exposed as kind of being frauds or is this a situation where you’ve got a a tough place to pitch and they’ll come home against the Mississippi State

Team that may not be as good on offense and they’ll look really really good and prove themselves to be one of the top teams in the conference I I’m I’m curious to see that and tonight uh for Texas A&M um you’re going to see an arm

That has been really good but I don’t know if fits one of the best four or five in college in the SEC and that’s Ryan Prager uh who’s got a 28 er uh but he hadn’t given up anything leading into the weekend against Florida and then

Florida kind of got after him a little bit so you know two two in a third seven hits and six runs after he had not allowed a single run all year that’s a bit of a red flag to me and I realized Holan looks exactly the same and I

Realized jump looks exactly the same so we’ll just kind of learn but now he’s going to be facing the same bats that Luke Heman saw and that Gage jump saw and I’m excited to see it because if A&M proves itself to have a lot of really

Good pitching they become one of the top two or three teams in the SEC if the pitching is mediocre which is what we kind of thought it would be because it was atrocious last year and looked really good in the pre-conference this year we’ll just have to to see how that

Goes I’m also curious to see how A&M uses Chris Cortez because Chris Cortez started a game against LS last year know that was the first SEC weekend so I don’t expect a lot of youall to remember that but Chris Cortez throws 99 mph with a sinker like it’s it’s really good

Stuff but he couldn’t throw strikes and teams hit him because they could just try to see the ball way up and if they didn’t see it way up then you just lay off and he walks guys so I’m fascinated by Mississippi State and Texas A&M this

Weekend my pick is Texas ANM to win two out of three but we’ll see how that goes on the other SEC game as I mentioned Joe Healey in ter in relation to LSU you don’t really want to be behind the eight ball when Hagen Smith shows up and

Auburn is because they got swept last weekend so you’re looking at losing a fourth game if LSU were to theoretically lose two out of three or heaven forbid get swept this weekend and you’re sitting there at potentially you two and four in the league with Hagen Smith

Coming up next all of a sudden that really starts to look like two and five because you’re going to Arkansas on the road with the best pitcher in the league going it’s just not a very comfortable deal so that’s what Auburn’s going to see albeit in their home ballpark this

Weekend um tonight and you’ll see Hagen Smith um and then you’ll see two really good arms in Brady tiger and Mason Molina for Arkansas the rest of the way I’m down on Auburn right now I don’t think they have a Friday starter and they’re changing their rotation up this

Weekend alsup’s been going and he’s ER is over seven I don’t know that their Bullpen is dominant and while I like Ike Irish a lot and I think there are a couple guys in that lineup that can hit I just don’t think I trust all right now

To be anything better than the nth or 10th best team in the league and so uh that’s another team that LSU will play way down the line but they get Hagen Smith tonight and I just don’t expect that to go super well Hagen Smith’s just been awesome since a bizarre start to

His season where he gave a three-run homer on the third batter he faced and then since then’s been basically unhitable so a couple of SEC baseball games tonight that I’ll be uh keyed in on give you a brief synopsis of those coming up on tomorrow’s show but we’ll

Talk a lot about the NCAA tournament as well I’ll get you a scoreboard update from the NCAA tournament uh Arizona all over Long Beach State in the second half it was fairly tight uh in the first half but with nine minutes to go in that one 17-point lead for the number two seed

Arizona North Carolina at the break against Wagner they lead by 12 40-28 is a score in that one Morehead State the 14 seed up on Illinois pretty early in that one 14 minutes to go it is 17 to3 we’ve got some finals already in the books kraton Beats akan by 17 that’s a

Three seat over the 14 du Kane with the first uh well second uh seeded upet they beat BYU 7167 the 11 seed moving on in the east in Michigan State and Mississippi State went final first in today’s action Michigan State all over Mississippi State by 18

6951 was the final Chris Jan team for the second year in a row makes the NCAA tournament but not able to advance past the round of 64 so we’ll take one more time out we’ll come back and close things out it’s a Thursday edition of The Hunt Palmer show The Hunt Palmer

Live at lunch for the bage from Arch Madness right here 1045 ESPN Baton Rouge This is the hunt Palmer show brought to you by Rouse’s supermarkets just looking at some Tom ISO stats uh during the break there this from Chris salari on Twitter Tom ISO today extended his NCAA tournament record with a 17th Victory as a lower seed team MSU also Michigan State improved to

11-1 all time against SEC opponents and ISO is 9-0 against SEC foes out to the Southeastern Conference getting ISO every March 9 and0 against the league incidentally they added the only loss Missi State uh M Michigan state has incurred to an SEC team was a 1978 loss

To Kentucky a defeat that was apparently one of the big factors in Magic Johnson returning to the Spartans that helped them win their first national title in 1979 so uh yeah you don’t want to draw Miss Michigan State we saw that with LSU back in 2019 NCAA tournament rolling on Morehead

State leads by three over three seed Illinois been getting you caught up on scores uh most of our show today and we appreciate yall for hanging out with us all right be let’s play some tiet or leave it all right first one here the Los Angeles Dodgers interpreter for sh Otani

Was fired Wednesday afternoon after questions surrounding at least 4.5 million wire transfers sent from otani’s bank account to a bookmaking operation set off a series of events according to ESPN eepe mizuhara longtime friend and interpreter for Otani incurred the gambling debts to a Southern California bookmaking operation and then Otani sent

Gambling he sent money to pay off the debts covering 4.5 million for your buddy take it or leave it well if you’re Otani I’ll take it he can do that but it appears that there’s some malfeasance here because now is saying that it’s been stolen and this is not the story we

Heard yesterday and we got problems here with this money because it’s going to a shady source and it’s coming from a guy who plays in professional sports and they’re changing their story here and there and it just feels like this is going to get dug on a lot and they’re

Going to find the source of this money and figure out what the bets were placed on like this is not over far from being over and it doesn’t feel like it’s going to be great all right John R’s Champions dinner menu take it or leave it yeah I took a look

At this earlier today feeling I know you’re going on this one I’m going to take it it’s it’s very uh complicated for me to read but it’s I like the fact that he went very very Spanish here they’ve got top us um as appetizers everything from Spanish omelette with

Onions and coffee potatoes to um some cheese and black truffle to Iberian ham and cured pork to chizo like that all sounds probably really good and I’m sure that’s just fine um if you tell me that the main course is Chon aaria I’m going

To go well I don’t know what that is but then I can read the text underneath it says Bosque ribey and I’m like all right that’s probably just fine kind of Spanish steak something interesting about that I I read I read about was that they when they bring you the ribeye

It’s already cut but they bring you they bring it to in a hot plate so you can cook it however much like to to your desired temperature so like he he said he said if you cooked anything more than medium rare and like where I’m from like

You would get looks yes but if you want to you have that option so that’s that was interesting uh interesting take I’m sure there will be people that do we had a discussion yesterday um I’ll be sad about it but that’s what people want to

Uh want to do and I did find this out I think we found this out last year but I jogged my memory uh ROM’s picking up the tab for this entire dinner that includes the uh includes the wine and the bourbon all that got a nice

Paycheck he’ll be fine I think you think about like who would be somebody that like wouldn’t be absolutely loaded like I wouldn’t think that like uh well they money he had been playing for a while like how how how long had Danny Willet been in the time he was picking up that

No he won like he won a million bucks from the Masters you can pick up dinner I’m sure the tab is let’s see if I can ballpark that um I would say huh there’s 23 guys there that’s just a ballpark and it’s you know 600 ahead with wine 700e

Yeah um so yeah what what do the numbers come to if I do 23 * 7 be six figures in that case but yeah it wouldn’t be so I got the calculator 23 * 700 it’s like it’s like you’re off for 20 grand they’ll be just fine um but they

But emlan did say to the barol guys like yeah you know maybe if it’s not your favorite winner you might go for a real special bourbon real special bottle of wine they got there in the seller so yeah I’ll take that I’ll take that all right next one your Long Beach State

Coach Dan Monson who uh unfortunately the beach is not looking great right now in their game but he said I’m a Seinfeld episode in reference to his team making the tournament after him being fired George would be proud take it or leave it I’ll take it yeah I I I completely I

Mean we’ll talk about it in a second but the the fact of the ad just go to the ad one we’ll just add on to this the ad sounds like a clown yeah so the next one is along with what Monson said the ad for long State said his decision to fire

Monson was made with the hope that it would inspire a run to the NCAA tournament I’ll leave it that’s ridiculous and like I just the guy I mean he he the coach goes to the press conference yesterday and he sits down to answer a question he

Goes I can I don’t really have to answer thing I don’t want because I’m working for free now which like he’s he’s technically unemployed it’s just um I completely agree with the fact that you can fire a coach who made the NCA tournament by winning a conference tournament winning three games in three

Days doesn’t prove to me that you need to lead the program forward but I do think that firing the coach right before the conference tournament and letting him Coach is a weird move you want to fire him SE February 14th and let the guys run out the string there that’s

Fine but like right there at the end you might as well just let the guy play I think the Long Beach State ad is full of it I’m pulling for Coach Monson to get it done today although it doesn’t appear that’s going to happen um but a very uh

An interesting situation you don’t often see a fired coach coaching in the NCA tournament but that is certainly the case with Long Beach State uh today so that’s it for our Thursday show brought to you by Rous if you missed any of it catch it on demand 1045 espn.com’s on
