The body speed in the golf swing is NOT created where you think it is…and what a LOT of golfers don’t realise is that the left shoulder can be a help or hinderance in the golf swing…The left shoulder can unlock some serious body speed if you use is right, and help you square up the club face to hit much straighter shots. Yes, this is how important the left shoulder is. In this simple golf lesson Top 50 PGA coach Alex Elliott shows you how to utilise your left shoulder to get the body speed that you need in the golf swing. There are a whole load of benefits to this including, increase your club head speed with driver, increasing club head speed in golf, square you club face, rotate your body in the golf swing, hit the driver on the up, hit the driver longer, hit the driver straighter, left shoulder in the golf swing, shoulders in the golf swing and so much more!

The first thing I want you to think about here is don’t think about your core as giving you speed in your golf swing now I know you might have heard that advice before but I want you to focus on what your left shoulder does to give you the idea of better rotation

Through the shop now no matter your athletic ability your age how long you’ve been playing golf I know for a fact that if you promise me you’re going to follow these five simple steps you could increase your Club speed by 3 to 4 M an hour let’s get into the video the

Idea of this video is really really simple if we think about this and watch my left shoulder here my left shoulder stays still or relatively still it’s very hard for me to get this body to turn isn’t it if however we learn to get the left shoulder to work

Up and around look how much more freedom I have we get to that like sort of iconic finish all the top players have now everyone asked me Alex like how how do you come up with all these ideas and where does your content come from well simply it comes from you

And I’ve been replying to so many of you down in the comments saying don’t worry I will address this so this is for everybody who’s asked on driver tips you can see on the screen and also just generally wanting to hit it a little bit further with driver don’t forget I can

Help you play better golf too just simply subscribe turn the Bell just pop your comment or query down below now I would definitely say turn the Bell because you don’t want to miss me answering your question let’s get into the first step of fight the first stage

Of this whole drill is just to get a little bit of understanding in there is the fact that your back swing and down swing are just simply a mirror image of each other so have a look at me here right if I make a back swing have a look

At my right arm how it folds slightly and my left arm stays nice and straight as we’re swinging down our right arm starts to extend and this is where we start to go wrong a little bit bit but we’ve got to get the left arm to fold

And create the mirror image of the back swing but on the follow through now if you do that you the left shoulder to work up and around this is the key to Speed it almost allows you to create a little bit of Freedom so the first thing

Is the understanding at where the left shoulder wants to work and not to inhibit that by allowing the GOL swing to be understood that your back swing and down swing are simply a mirror image of each other so let’s now go into Stage number two we actually don’t even need a

Golf club for this this is what I call show me the Palm so there’s a couple of elements just to get right in this what I mean by show me the Palm is if I isolate this we want the wrist to work like this where you can show me your

Palm I want your left shoulder to work around so what I would really recommend here for 8 to 12 reps is if you stood here okay and I want you to practice this showing me the Palm so if I turned around I could see this now

Automatically for me to see my palm this must have happened can’t see my palm like this can I can’t see my palm like this if I really feel this idea this is what I want you to do now don’t do this half-heartedly give me a

Little bit of speed as much of speed as you feel comfortable though this is really the action we’re looking to develop and everyone says to me when they for lessons Alex why’ you break it down into five stages well simply it actually gives you half a chance of

Bringing it into your game our brain gets confused and we think about too many things so breaking it down this way I know you have a chance of integrating it in so second stage allow the left shoulder to move and show yourself the Palm that’s going to get this action

Really starting to develop let’s now move on to stage number three I call these one-handed swings if you think this process takes no longer than 5 minutes when you’re on your own so just to give you the idea again I want you to stand here at stage three where we just

Make the first bit where we get the idea of left shoulder moving up and around okay now we’re going to bring in again show me the Palm but with those onehanded swings just like this with the golf club show me the Palm now what could I see there my palm and again look

At the action my arm is starting to make now the reason why I love these one-handed swings is the momentum of that club you can really feel it speed up as you get the body to work better and when I say body left shoulder and left arm it really almost drags you

Through the shot and this is the beauty of this right because this club is now heavy relative to you because it’s now one-handed you start to do everything right in your swing so again I want you to do 8 to 12 reps feeling that action we’re now going to start hitting some

Shots away at stage number four so let me grab a golf ball and one thing that I would say is you could do this with irons too and if you are doing it with an iron you could place a TEEG in the ground on those one-handed shots and have sort of a

Focus on hitting that TEEG I really think that would be a great suggestion there so let’s now hit some away now what I want you to really focus on is actually focusing on finishing now even with driver just that sort of quarter finish so hitting some shots away slowly

Slow speed show me the palm and getting the mirror image ke is the left shoulder right so watch me here just going to hit some away slowly like this now it amazes me and it’ll Amaze you when you do this how far that actually goes like if I showed you this

You wouldn’t believe it I felt less than half speed but we just hit that 236 yards I think if you can get this technique and ramp the speed up without losing control that’s what our aim is so if I left you now with the final part of

This video that I would say is what I would call our swing thought and this is it I know you’ll end up doing this by the way hitting those sort of three4 Tommy Fleetwood style follow-through shots out on the course because you just realize how little effort that goes

Right but the s thought that I really focus on is creating that L shape so this because creating that l-shape is allowed my arm to work this way and my left shoulder to work round so go back to what I said if your left shoulder and left arm don’t work there’s no point

Having any body speed at all because it gets jammed and we lose total control so my only focus for you here is on the Finish swing and think about this have you ever had a follow through swing thought probably not it’s being all here I want you to focus on l-shape and

Getting that but of the club to point all the way to Target that way I know you’ve achieved this here here you won’t get there let me just do this one here I will do this one relatively slowly just so you can see this and you know what to

Do and you know what you’re trying to copy look what finished look at that launch if I just turn to you now not move my arms there this all the way through to you with this L shape now it’s as simple as that if you want to really improve

Your Club head speed understand how your left shoulder and left arm folds and moves in the follow through thanks for watching and don’t forget to subscribe to the channel here for free simple golf tips

  1. Awesome video Alex. This video is going to help so many new golfers that struggle. Thanks for what you donto help us recreational golfers.
    Cheers✌️

  2. Thanks, I want to see how much I can cut my handicap this season by following your advice, I was off 24 all last season which was my first season as a member of a club 😊

  3. Good stuff again! I really wish I could get a few lesson with you! The way you breakdown everything makes it so much easier and simpler.

  4. Alex, I don’t remember ever seeing what your swing speed is, particularly when you are demonstrating these slow or half speed swings . As a senior, I am lucky to get 75-80 mph. What kind of distance with my driver can I realistically expect?

  5. Alex, last week you were promoting your hands in the middle of the grip, today you are gripping the back of the grip. Why the change ?

  6. When the left shoulder moves up and to the left so does the things attached to it, or more specifically the hands, handle/grip, and rest of the club. That could potentially lead to pulls, pull-hooks, fades, and slices (the show me the palm part might reduce the chance of the fades and slices). Ernie Els used to use the thought of separating his left shoulder from his chin, so the tip seems along those lines. However, Ernie's move of separation was more parallel to the target which would be less likely to cause the leftward path.

  7. Alex, on the follow through would the left arm be pinned to your side, or very close to it, all the way after impact as you come around? I keep hearing contradictory things about this. Example, keep a glove under your left armpit. Others say the left arm should be pinned to pectoral muscle. It's so confusing.

  8. Something I noticed in your video, and also watching the touring pros, is that at address, the shaft angle for full shots (regardless of club) is 45 degrees. Hold the club straight up from the ball, tilt the shaft toward you, adjust your stance but keep the tilt, and swing. Hope this makes sense. 😅⛳️

  9. I like the videos but I see you speak of right hand and your right arm making a swing, so is your left arm guiding your right arm? Just a question may I don’t really swing with my left arm. My left arm is always guiding me back and my right armis like skipping a rock. It helps me extend both arms. Is that wrong?

  10. I like that you said that they are a mirror image because I responded and asked another PGA top 50 teacher and he said it wasn’t the same and is it OK if I feel like when my right arm comes back that I feel like I’m skipping a rock so I can extend both arms left and right maybe that is just what I feel

  11. I've been experimenting with an early wrist cock vs a one-piece takeaway, which I've always struggled with. My results have been relatively favorable. What are your thoughts on this. Suggestions?

  12. Great video mate, i was told to feel like you are throwing a frisbee, which is basically the same thing. Have a great day mate and thanks for the daily uploads

  13. Coach, Your pro swing is so smooth and "compact", no unnecessary movements, the big muscles work together to generate speed. It's so hard to learn. And perhaps, difficult to pass on. Any solution? 😅

  14. My problem is that I wear bifocal glasses which cause me to tilt my head down further than most so that I’m not looking through the bifocal part of the lenses. It seems to be a problem getting my head up after the shot and clearing my head to make a full turn.

  15. It went 236 yards because, yes the technique was good, but you're young, fit and athletic. Paige Spirinac (we all know her) is a very good golfer – when she absolutely throws herself at the ball, she carries driver 220-230. Physical limitations.

  16. went to the course today and kept this left shoulder thought and the results with all clubs was amazing. thank you so much for this left shoulder turn technique. Well done!!!
