Thanks for watching!

Hey guys thanks for watching really exciting video today I have a tour coach out here with me that’s been on the channel before because he’s a really really well-known putting instructor but he also uh he’s a coach of all things golf John Ortega hey John how you doing

Good to see you again good to see you good to see you again okay so we’re GNA talk a little bit about something John John’s player Jake knp uh won on the PGA tour two weeks ago yeah not this past week but the pre previous week and he

Almost he was hunting this week we didn’t quite get it done but he he put really well so he had a top five this week and and he went on tour last week and it was making a lot of news because Jake does do something that looks

Different like if you put all the tour players along is something that looks a little different so we’re going to talk about that but the real key to this video that I wanted to do John is if somebody does something different in their swing how do you know when when to

Say like okay that’s just your personality or just like a little unique thing that you do and when when no that’s something that actually needs to be changed so how do you know the difference between those two where you should actually make a change well the

Ball and the ground is a pretty good truth teller okay so if the ball’s going everywhere that’s that’s pretty the first sign pretty much the first sign and the second sign is how the club hits the ball and how it interacts with the ground okay so if you see somebody’s

Real Scoopy you they’re maybe staying back and throwing the club a little too much and they’re not leading enough um yeah if they’re uh hitting it too high same thing probably too much of this unless they have a lot of Club head speed and they’re just B high ball

Hitters because of the ball speed okay so you look at the ball first um video you can tell some things off of the video if somebody’s you know hitting pulls or Cuts or you know the the the guy that I coach most of the time guys

Are like this right you can see their shoulders and their body doing some pretty extreme movements and those are pretty easy to uh point out to people and they can put their mind around that yeah um I think more for the better players you’re going to see a little bit

More too much of this if they especially if they grew up in in go this so there’s like when I was younger people were taught to swing inside out and kind of rotate the club this way swing first base wedding ring yeah yeah that that

Kind of that kind of thing so I get a lot of guys that are my age or somewhere between my age and your age that do a little bit of that so you have to um Enlighten them in terms of like okay it’s it’s probably a better idea to do

This versus that so so you’ll see especially with trackman numbers you’ll see the uh the low Point won’t be far enough forward the swing direction will be too far right the dynamic Loft will be too you uh great you know too much Dynamic l so you start looking at those

Numbers is high then yeah so so you start looking at those numbers and then you kind of pair that with a video and you tell him okay if you’re doing this this will happen then you do some of the extremes like earlier you were talking with Scott about the goldilux yeah so

You give him some extremes I had a kid yesterday and his sister that they couldn’t hit a fade at all so I showed him a video of Alex noren doing this his thing like that how extreme he had to feel that yeah the Canadian kids that’re kind of real lateral like this probably

From hockey I don’t know sure weak grips so you got get them to you know get a little stronger grip and do these pull Cuts give them give them like a an idea that’s a little bit different or a lot different than what they do and that

Helps them put their mind around the direction they need to move their swings or the way they’re thinking about how they’re going to hit a golf ball to U find them closer to neutral or a better better them so so let’s talk specifically about Jake so Jake Jake is

Now becoming pretty known for two things first thing I think is nap time and just being having this amazing tempo right and then second second is having a very long swing I have noticed if like when I went to the Long Beach open and you see

Like all the guys that come after for the Long Beach open and then you see just the third of them make make the cut or even less back in the day it was like 400 guys and only like 60 made the cut I did see I could see like in a general

You know Montage of everybody the the guys with shorter swings seem to be more consistent so what do you think it is about uh Jake’s swing that works with a longer swing and it’s also like insanely powerful well first off he’s been doing it all

His life so so if if you get a guy that’s maybe just short of parallel and you somehow get them more flexible or they they turn their bodies more somehow some way they can create more length to their swing right you that might be a recipe for you know inconsistency but in

His case that’s what his his body and his brain have known since he was a little boy right so to try to change that would yeah so so he he has uh when he worked with Mark Blackburn three or four years ago they tried to you know

Shorten his swing for a fairway finder and he does a little bit of that he’s working some with Dana a certain shot yeah and just and he does do three quarter swings that’s a little bit of a misnomer about Jake he can shorten it but when he when he’s going to hit it

Far he just swings back farther and with him a lot of him being able to swing back farther is he has a really flexible upper back so John Daly Fred Couples all the guys that have really long back swings they have two things going in their favor they have a really long or

Excuse me real flexible back upper backs and they’ve been doing it since they were little so their body’s just used to doing that it’s kind of like a their body’s accustomed to that okay so so there’s a difference between a long back swing where somebody would get

Everything tilted and and that way long whereas his is he’s still really stable it’s just that he’s got such a flexible I guess you would call tpine yeah that that it is long but it’s long in a different way than the than the sloppy long you see at the uh the club on

Saturday whatever exactly and I think another thing attributes to it is when he was younger he swung the club back really fast and so that really fast back swing just got the momentum of the club going so fast and he wasn’t very strong when he was young because he was really

Small that that just turned into a pattern where it went long so some of that was due to him being small and having a big brother that was tall and okay pretty powerful and so he was trying to keep up with his little his big brother he just made his big giant

Back swing and it just kind of lasted what are some of the red flags that you see in swings that where you’ll say like okay that’s something I whenever I see this that’s probably something I will try to change when when a golfer comes in you mentioned when you see the

Shoulder dive bombing this way or what are some other things that you might see and be like that’s a red flag flag that is probably not going to be successful that’s a good question uh the one that I see most often people that aren’t very pliable such as me in my

Older age when they try to really open up like the tour players they here okay the tour players are 45 you kind of pan my like face that way and they’re trying to get really this way like that and like this they go walking nean or whoever’s like that and they just don’t

Have the flexibility to do that yeah and so when they do that because their body doesn’t have pliability and separate they’re like this so they don’t go like this and have the club come in in a good with a crazy Side Band yeah or just any of that just it’s all melded together

Welded together like boom so I’m so that like super rotational swing will just end up being stiff and over the top and yeah for for a lot of older older folks and I I coach a lot of older folks too so that’s that’s one of the things that

I see a lot of and I I have to encourage them to to stay a little bit more facing the ball so I meaning they’re not going to rotate open a lot like more like Nick price where they’re just you know slightly open oh okay yeah yeah and then

And then you give them drills like you know Hitting off their left foot and just having the club come down here they almost have to feel like their arms start down first which they won’t and then have them feel like they’re you know doing a little bit more of that

Than trying to get the hands to go left and kind of like a you know you see a lot of the real fit tour players that have that left excess it’s like that yeah for for the older golfer that’s really hard to do I’ve seen a few do

That and that’s just because of their way their body moves but to try to do that if you don’t do that it’s it’s uh it’s not a good alcome okay let’s talk a little bit here stand here John yeah talk a little bit about what you said about the release where like

Earlier people were trying to swing to First bace with this kind of rolling release yeah and then I guess the other end of that is now people are trying to keep this more square and exit left more like that do you have like a preference

Or like how do you tell what type of player what type of release the player should use well usually the clue is first time they swing you’ll see that their hands will either swing like in this direction M you kind of you’ll see the butt of the club show at the camera

Oh okay so so I I think that’s pretty normal where it’s not being hidden by the body you can actually see it yeah it’s a little bit more Jimmy Ballard esque and then the other one in his book he says look Mom no hands but you’ll see

A lot of really really good players do that especially they do with short irons so even even some of the people that have the butt of the club showing on the longer clubs like drivers and six irons seven irons four whatever with the wedges it’ll it’ll disappear a little

Bit faster so they’ll go a little bit more left so it’s it’s uh a lot of that’s dependent on uh the physical abilities of a player so so the more physical players can do more things the on is there a way to test people who were watching at home could maybe test

To see like hey am I flexible enough to do this more modern slap release exit left swing uh I think like when people do 9090s on the ground the ones that have you know fairly flexible hips okay they’ll be able to like lift their knees up or move them in different direction

So that these these joints down or excuse me this uh the connection of the the femine the ball in socket they they’ll demonstrate that they can move that around pretty well the ones that can’t such as myself probably not so so not not that I do physical tests too

Much but I can just watch when somebody swings the golf club see if they’re pable or not right just go okay that guy can’t do that or this or that person can’t do that all right we’re going to hit some shots here I’m going to hit

Some shots for you here I’ll take that one okay for you and I I want I mean you’ve seen a bit of what I do not too much but but uh I just want your help because there are some things that I do that are kind of unique and I just want

To like one of the main things that I do that I’ve always fought with is I do take it a little in and then the hands come out a little bit and I would love to be more that way and that way from just like an aesthetic view but also

Because it it leads to some bad shots now what what do what do you feel like you the shot the bad shot that you get when you do what you do what what not ideal in your mind uh I go like this and then I feel like I know that’s out so

Then I stop rotating and I hump it a little bit and then I get the my release going like this okay so then the club actually because the hands at first do go a little just a little over so you would think that would make the path go

Left but then I correct that and go like that and actually the path comes quite dramatically from the inside and I hit these dead straight shots to then overdraw right which I was hitting that day with Brian you know you know but my my arm was really hurt that day so so I

Think that’s the shot that I don’t like is the dead straight shot I think it’s going to be okay but then it o it overdraws five five to 10 yards you know and you’re like it’s kind of a strange thing because I’m a little over but then

I have a path that goes to first base a lot I understand okay let’s let’s let’s see you hit one and then I’ll just uh sure you can tell me what the numbers say doing what you normally do club path five yeah club path five degrees into out and uh angle of attack

Was three degrees down which is really good um okay all the other numbers look pretty good show does it so before you uh make this swing and hit the ball actually go ahead and set up to this this ball this this is something I got from somebody else most most everything

I teach I stole from somebody else of course okay so I want you to take the club back and then I want you to like keep the arms up a little bit and feel like you’re going to swing over the top of the ball and hit a ball kind of where

The where the corner yeah yeah yeah yeah so just just a little bit of that that there you go like that okay you hit a ball with a similar feel like that without I’m here I’m leaving the hands up more and just a little bit of an Alex

Norin see what happens I know will get pretty steep but we’ll see what happens okay see what the path did okay probably had more spin well the ball went way further it went 10 yards further so it went one one uh 1.8 and out so that’s probably going so that

Changed me about four degrees from being 5 degrees into out to 1.8 yeah so that’s uh 5. uh our friend Brian maneli calls that the carry so he says the never hook again pattern okay he really had people carry carry with carry you carry you

Feel like you keep your arms up and you go out yeah okay which is weird I would never as somebody who’s nervous about being over the top I would never feel that we’ll start that we start with that first see how that goes then we might

Have to like put a little tweak into it based on some some other things that could happen the club’s going to come over the top of this ball you can hit that ball uh we just got to make sure you don’t I’ll be all right hit off the

I don’t think you pull it that much all right so like if I’m set up here like this I’m going to actually miss this ball and hit that one yeah exctly we have this ball set up just inside that yeah yeah maybe move it right here yeah you’re

Good okay see what that is oh it’s got two balls in the zone so it’s not going to show that it won’t pick it up it won’t it won’t pick it up because there’s two balls in in the forsight zone okay so now hit hit a ball with that same feel okay

Okay okay so it said it was a 2 de pull but the path was9 right so if you’re trying to re rid yourself of that push hook yeah you get half of it done right so okay so then the the the secondary let’s call it adjustment you might have the feeling if

You’re going through because you went this way right let’s say you have a release pattern that’s predicated on you going like this so it’ be a little bit more this in there right right so just feel like you do a little bit more of this with that okay Lee and I were

Talking about that earlier more that so you’re going to go yeah like that so when you finish give it that one okay so before the pattern would have been this this way with this release and now I’m trying to keep it up with this release yeah okay yeah initially it

Might get a little steep here but that might be a bad thing cuz a lot of the people that play Fades their track like their track is kind of between the arms so people fall in love with the with the club being on the forearm yeah I like

The way that looks but that’s you know unless you get really fast and get out that way you have a lot of speed and you can get there it’s probably going to cause the draw especially if you’re prone to going like this yeah so you know I know that you know the camera’s

Under the forearm all the time yeah okay then let’s even beautiful then we go more that way so so same same play this play this playing the shot the same way okay so the two things we’re putting together is we’re going here and we’re doing this carry yeah we’re we’re

Feeling we leave the hands up and we’re aiming at a Target out here yeah second thing with that is then when we get down here feel like we’re releasing it like this more and less like that yeah yeah yeah I love that all right good yes you

Get the little scoop and the Marvel Spider-Man both both things that both things that I stole from Brian so let’s see okay got path one in out that doesn’t suck angle of attack six down this is a pitching wedge that’s pretty good yeah and uh

It was 3.7 left so that was a pool that was like a legit pull okay so that that’s the secondary part that’s going to take some time so happen is that showing John that that it is a uh that it is a face pool more than a path pull

Because we were one degree yeah it’s a face pull so how do I get the face a little bit more stabilized that’s a good question we’re going to hit it with a couple different feels okay so on this one I want you to feel like you’re doing

It more with your left hand feel like you’re going to go this way hold me and show me that so I want you to feel instead of going this way I want you to feel like you’re going through and going this way so you’ll feel like instead of your knuckles going down

You’re going to feel like you’re going this way okay got that so I’m going to leave my hands up aim for this thing here and then I’m going to feel more this way right yeah yeah okay that felt really good okay path was just 7 angle attack was 6.7

Club club path was not not as good there oh look we have a little animation club path was 3.8 to the right so 3.8 towards first base well let but the face was better face was better see so you the your intention of fixing the face fixed

The face but having that intention the path kind of went back to where it was right so you have to eventually be able to do both it’s like rubbing your head and your uh your belly at the same time so better players I usually try to get the path first especially if they’re

Hooking path first path first and face second with the slicers it’s usually face first path second you probably have a little push there too it felt so good let’s see I’m going to hit this line yeah hit the line I did hit the line okay you hit the line that’s good club

Path 5.6 to the right is it yeah okay looks like you’re locked into that okay hit how about this one we just go so whenever I try to fix the face my path starts going towards first base a lot I don’t just just for fun let’s just try

To hipping slice okay see how that just works out now now that you’ve uh hammered on this from both of those angles just try to hit a slice little carry slice around a around a tree yeah okay I think that one did it tiny Pole where does it show compared to no

That was 3.9 to the right oh 3.9 out to in see we’re getting somewh good oh that was so solid that’s that was good that does it does it get uh a spin AIS like 3° out to in yeah and uh 10,000 spin yeah so you’ve done both

Sides kind of like what you did earlier with with locks yeah yeah now see if you can just reduce it so so before I would go this way that way and then really to slices it and now we’re just going a little if you look at it in in Scott’s

Perspective he’s not sliding as much right he’s doing a little bit more Alex norin right so there’s going to be more rotational element right totally and then uh so so then in in this case your intention of trying to hit a shot caused some physical changes right so I call

This the task is the teacher incentive right yeah task is the teacher yeah so you you’re you know you’re a pretty avid player so most of the time when I’m trying to do this with somebody it doesn’t happen as quickly but in at the same time since you’ve hit so many golf

Balls with the pattern that you have it can make it difficult to also change right so there’s there’s you got both sides of the the Spectrum you have you know somebody who’s a skilled player but at the same time they’re pretty locked into what they do so it’s uh a matter of

Like how much and when so like let’s say if you’re working with a tour player not that I work with that many but if you are working with a tour player you got to be careful about how much you want to change at any particular time because

They’re trying to go out and put up a score so now if they’re too much in their mind and they can’t just hit a see a shot and hit it it may or may not be a good thing right that one was 0.6 that was a better path straight 81 left spin

So that’s pretty much a straight ball yeah it’s good Okay so we’ve gotten somewhere and that what was that 10 minutes can you yeah can you stand down the line I just want to see when I do this uh right here yeah stand down the

Line just so you can see when I do this do you see when I do this carry feel cuz you know sometimes feel isn’t real are the hands coming let’s see they they probably should oh yeah yeah but they did too much okay you got too

Much so he didn’t get it back in so let’s let’s reduce that okay so it might it might be that the hands don’t necessarily feel out they just feel up yeah yeah possibly I mean they might have to feel out for a while but yeah like that yeah that there’s your

Rehearsal swing like you’re hitting that extra ball then do the same thing just try to hit a slice there you go so it’s probably a right there yeah pool and then pool fade a little bit club path was one de out to in yeah

One de so so if you practice a lot like that and then try to get it back to maybe two in out and when you’re back when you’re down there John it doesn’t look like the hands are gone no not too much I I’ll do just one one more time

Yeah you got to get a new pair of shoes you’re busting I just saw that I I’ve been wearing these forever he’s getting some push off too much ground force that’s good hey he’s he’s he’s been doing too much uh in the martial arts studio yeah no what happened was my son

Got on the track team so I’ve been running a mile in these stupid shoes yeah okay okay so we’re going here we’re aiming that way yeah and and and almost like like to see you just take it back with your normal back swing and come

Over the top of it okay kind of like the the the in and over like that that was close you just pulled it but I’d like to see that the path be good there just the face was Square to that path so you put five in

Out to in that’s great for now and then you just reduce that great okay thanks thanks a lot for watching guys if you’re interested in seeing John he’s near Costa Mesa Country Club he’s in and out of Costa Mesa Country Club and he’s building his own facility about a block

And a half away from there that will’ll be doing videos from there as well if I’m going to save my money for a swing Catalyst that’s pretty pretty impressive demonstration I know can can get you a 1% discount okay perfect okay uh see you later guys okay thanks

  1. Been telling ya about Brian THE MANzella boys! Him and Michael Jacobs are the bees knees 💪🏻! Nice group of golf guys in this video!

  2. great video sir. been saying this for 5 years on your channel. Few things' matter, long, short, compact, flowing, twichy , fluid , early wrist hing, late wrist hing, high hands, deep hands ect………………..it really bowls down to how much time you want to put in, and what your goals are and in the end……………………..how much money do you have.

  3. It's when I see videos like this you understand why I will never be great at golf. We're talking 2-4 degrees with face, path and attack angle at 100-115 mph and each degree combination wildly changes the outcome… Also why every amateur that comes to a lesson asks for "consistency". Sure, you want some unicorns and holy grails with that Sir? The best I can do is to practice my short game 95% of the time as the lower speed actually allows for some control of those inputs but instead like everybody else it's 95% ball bashing on the range 😀

  4. Go back to Mike or Monte, your swing looked better 4-5 years ago working with them, lessons from 100s of instructors is confusing, paralysis by analysis

  5. Jake works with Dana Dahlquist for his full swing John is primarily his short game instructor! I hate when you tell half truths

  6. Really nice guy to get a lesson from. Very civilised to credit Manzella. Think McIlroy with his hook problem just now could do with a bit of that. It was a Corey Pavin practice swing back in the day, pre Noren.

  7. Wow — what a great development for you IMHO! If you can get to a neutral to slightly leftward pattern and a stable face …. you will have a ton of confidence in where that ball is going (straight to slightly cut)

  8. Great great video!!! Wow working from hitting a slice to modifying it to a small fade. Never thought about it that way. I get stuck inside too many times.. going to work on this for sure….

  9. The one time I broke 80 happened when I was working on Manzella's "Never Hook Again" pattern. Haven't seen 80 in a long time; maybe its time to revisit it! With this pattern, does distance suffer?
