Hello and Welcome to Reload Golf! My name is Rob Woodcock and in March 2023 I decided I wanted to get back in to golf. I thought what’s the best way to do this?
I watch a bit of YouTube golf so I thought well if I record my rounds it’ll make me actually go and play, so I bought an audio recorder and a tripod, I use my phone as the camera and I have afternoons off work to go and play at different courses all around Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
Along with the rounds, I’ll be doing explanation and debriefs videos of the rounds, but the aim is to put a video out every 2 weeks, on Tuesdays at 5pm. I’ve actually really enjoyed doing it, I’ve got about 6 months worth of videos in the bank, still editing them because the full rounds take forever to do, but I’ve got a schedule and plan for 2 years worth, and then we’ll go from there!

Hello and welcome to reload golf with me Rob Woodcock and we’re back in the hallway this video is going to be a bit of a breakdown of how to get into golf effectively with the scoring system the te’s booking around how to act at a golf
Club so on and so forth I’m not saying that it’s not for current golfers um I like to think you’ll all learn something whether you’re a current go golfer or a non-golfer um but yeah I’m hoping that this will be uh helpful to everyone really this video so let’s get into it shall
We the scoring system obviously got Bogies pars and birdies seem it can seem really odd but effectively what it is is for each hole there’ll be a par uh for that hole depends on the yardage of the hole generally um so sort of I don’t know sort of 250
250 yards to around 450 yards I’m generalizing but that will be a PA four because it will take two shots to get to the hole to to get to the green sorry and then they expect you to take two puts a a PA three is below 250 yards
Generally sort of 100 yards to 250 yards is a PA three because it takes one shot to get to the green and again two puts and then the par five is anything over 450 yards basically because it’ll take you three shots to get there and they
Always expect you to two up um so there that’s again I’ve really got to generalize but that’s roughly um the yardages and what the pa of the holes is based on um you then have stroke indexes for the holes so you have stroke index one to stroke index 18
Stroke index 18 being the easiest hole on the golf course stroke index one being the hardest hole on the on the golf course uh and obviously all the rest in between I think that’s fairly self-explanatory but say you’re playing a par 4 if you get um if you get get it in the
Hole for three shots it’s a birdie that’s one under par is a birdie um if you get it in four shots on a par four that’s level par that would be um just it’s just called par you’ve pared the and then if you’re one over um one over
Par which is a five on a par four sorry I’m saying a lot of numbers um but yeah if you’re if you take five shots to get it in the hole on the par four uh it’s a bogey double bogey for six shots triple bogey for seven shots quadruple bogey
For eight shots and so on and so forth um if you get it in in two it’s an eagle um but you shouldn’t really be watching this video If you get Eagles very much you already know what an eagle is I think um and yeah that’s basically the

You haven’t already getting into golf sort of getting clubs getting into it obviously the driving range is the best part of call to start with in my opinion uh you don’t have to buy Club straight away most driving rangers you can hire clubs um which is a great great Gateway
In you know you can play a little bit hit a few balls it can be fun and then if you want to take it from there the probably next thing to do is is get some clubs which you can you can get off eBay Facebook Marketplace is probably a good
Place to go and also golf bidder um is a specific website for secondhand clubs um which I haven’t actually used myself but I’ve heard really good things so yeah there’s there’s lots of ways to by cheap golf clubs I know golf has this perception where it’s a really expensive
Sport and it can be it can be very expensive but um if you pick the right clubs um and the right courses you can definitely um keep it cheaper so yeah I’d start the driving range if if you don’t know where to go and hit some balls and go from there booking around
At a golf club um there are a lot of sort of par three courses if you’ve never played around the golf before par three courses are your are your gateway from the driving range to a course most of the time I would say um there’s bound
To be a path three course near you if you just Google it I mean when I was growing up uh I was very fortunate I had family that played golf but if if you didn’t have anyone that played golf you I don’t know how you would have found
Golf clubs to be honest but now obviously with the internet wow I sound so old with the internet now yeah with with the Internet it’s obviously very easy to find courses um so if you just put par three golf course near me I’m sure they would come up uh
And that would definitely be my first first round in if you go straight to a main course it might seem a little bit scary and uh long compared to just hitting balls at the driv range so part three Course once you’re happy with how you hit it and you’re happy on a par
Three course then go to the main course um just talking about courses the SLO ratings now on all all courses the lower the slope rating effectively the easier the course there are factors to it but in general uh the lower the slot rating the easier the course so look for a low slot
Rating a low slot rating is between sort of 100 to 100 11 15 maybe even 120 that’s what I would class as a lower loope rating 120 to 130 is sort of average normal and then when you’re get in above 130 they are tough courses so I would
Definitely aim for between 100 and 120 if you’ve just started playing for the slope rating also T boxes now there is a perception or used to be a perception when I was a junior playing that you have to play off the yellow T’s as a man and the red te’s as
A woman now that’s not the case anymore it might have been back then but it’s definitely not the case anymore the red te’s are now the forward te’s anyone can play off them yellow te’s once you’ve once you’re happy on the red the the red te’s the forward te’s go to the yellow
Te’s but don’t feel like you can’t play off the red teas if you don’t want to because you definitely can as a man you are more than it within your right to play off those t’s so yeah I’d start on the forward T’s then go to the yellow
T’s you’ve then got white te’s normally sometimes they can be black sometimes they can be blue um but generally they’re white te’s they’re sort of the medal te’s the harder te’s they’re the longest the longest tea back effectively um but the yellow te is sort of
Intermediate I would say um but red is definitely the easiest so go for it and if someone says something then you’re well within your right and believe me that that is the case Google it Google it and show it them I’m using Google I’m I should be sponsored by
Google the amount I’m talking about them today and the internet and a lot of courses now as well you can book online which just wasn’t a thing when I was a junior member um playing golf which again makes it so easy the the internet that that internet is a is a
Good invention to be fair um but it’s just made it so much easier um and obviously I’ve been playing a lot of rounds as I’ve been getting back into it and I’ve been going to a lot of new courses that I’ve never been to before
And it is a bit daunting I do I do admit that you know I find it a little bit daunting when I rock up at a place that I’ve never been to before but I’ve had nothing except positive experiences um I’ve not had an issue with any of the
Courses to I’ve been to uh everyone’s very welcoming golf courses know that they need visitors um they need you to come and pay and play the course that’s how they keep keep going effectively so the vast majority of courses are very welcoming um so I know it can be
Daunting but don’t let it be don’t let it be the the it’s very different now to what it used to be like they used to this perception and it was probably true for the most part that golf clubs were very snotty and um stuck up and you know
They weren’t nice places to be and you know that probably was true but it’s definitely not the case anymore that’s really gone because now there’s there’s so much um other things to do that they have to be welcoming they have to because they would just go out of
Business if they didn’t so yeah it’s it’s not a it’s not a scary place to be anymore and if you’ve got your booking and your time you’re more than more than welcome to be there aren’t you there are usually dress codes at golf courses it
It is um a lot less strict than it used to be um you know 15 20 years ago it was no trainers no hats so on and so forth but now trainers I’m generalizing because I can’t speak about every Golf Club um but generally trainers are more than accepted in
Clubhouses um you know maybe have a shirt maybe have a collar on your shirt um shorts and trousers are more than um fine as well so yeah the the dress code is there it’s normally on their website um if you want their specific dress code but it is a lot um
Less strict than it used to be so uh that’s really good for for golf in general to be honest um there is an etiquette on most um golf courses as well it’s sort of Common Sense really that’s what I always thought of golf eut as I mean don’t don’t be
Shouting um on the golf course you know it’s not that difficult really is it like just act act respectfully to everyone else on the golf course is is basically what golf etiquette is um but again then might that might be on the website for the specific course that you’re going to
Um yeah I just don’t just don’t be scared don’t be worried about it go and go and try golf courses that’s what I’ve done I’ve gone out my comfort zone and tried to do that and tried to go and play courses that I’ve never played before and like I say I’ve had nothing

Yeah I mean you could go I could go on for hours about golf it’s you C you can get into it so so much but that’s the I like to think that’s the basics of golf um it’s an amazing sport one that I’ve not been playing for far too long
Now um and I like to think I’m in a similar boat to people that want to get into golf I know that I’ve had the past experiences where I was a go a member of a golf club uh and so on and so forth but I have found it quite overwhelming
Getting back into golf and it is scary when you get to a car park of a golf club and you’re there by yourself especially when you got camera in your hand um but people are people are nice generally you know and if you’re respectful they’ll be respectful to you and
