Take away from API and I put it in my notes for next year is that I think the importance on hitting Fairways is probably the most important thing at the Arnold Palmer at Bay Hill because the rough was uh maniacal and Fairways and greens and rag

I mean even if you had a nice approach shot you were rolling it out into the what almost was the first cut of deep Ru and I think that’s the unfairness point that a lot of these players you see Fitzpatrick I think it was on Friday

Yeah he didn’t make the cut he was losing his mind I mean he was hitting decent shots they end up rolling off the green into this seven foot rough you couldn’t even hack out of it and you know so but did the best player win yeah yeah uh I think we the Sheffer

Conversation um always needs to be viewed in the context of like well what is going to happen if if Sheffer finally figures out his Putter and I think that there were a lot of questions entering the week about you know he finally made the switch which is something we talked

About he switched to the the Mallet spider which is something we had talked about after Rivier out where we talked about on this show like is this rock bottom with Sheffer in terms of the putting and now he’s gonna play twice between now and the Masters and how we’d both be pretty

Surprised if he didn’t enter if he entered Augusta with the status quo right because if there’s ever a time to make a change before the Masters you got to do it at API you got to do it at API because then you roll into the players

And then I’m not sure if we’re going to I don’t know if he’s playing the vpar I don’t think he’s playing the Valero but after this week we’re not going to see Sheffer until uh the Masters and he made the switch and I think what would what’s probably the scariest thing for the

Field is he started to get better as the tournament progress right like he started out round one and the putter was pretty bad he was 55th out of 50 frustrated 55th out of 65 players 69 players on Thursday 28th out of 69 players on Friday 10th out of 69 players

On Saturday and first out of 69 players on Sunday which he didn’t even need by the way Scotty would have won this tournament as a zero Putter and he won by five because he gained 4.5 Strokes putting on 12 he yelled at Teddy Scott I

Think it was on Saturday oh he yelled at himself but he said something [ __ ] Scotty so and he he acknowledged that after the round that Scott kind of calmed him down and put him in a better head State yeah and after that it was over and you’re right the the thing with

Scotty Sheffer is he doesn’t hit any bad shots even the maybe not great shots are still good and even if he gets into trouble look at where his stance was on that par five um coming in uh yesterday he had no stance in the bunker hadit a

Little iron shot out to to be safe and then wedged to three feet for birdie yeah he and at this point like we said last week if he finds a putter he’s Unstoppable who’s going to beat him low acknowledged it he’s like I there’s only two people on Earth that can keep up

With this guy I don’t even think it’s two who are the two maybe ROM but he’s not on tour anymore I mean that was sort of tiger esque right hitting everything to 9 feet within 9 fet and making the putt so what’s what’s what’s different this week at the

Players the price and ownership I’d say I mean I think we should do a uh I think a lot of people enjoyed our our courtroom Min wo Lee debate last week which I think we should put a bow on that if you want to spend about five five minutes recapping the minw Le

Experience I have closing thoughts on that but why don’t we do that again this week because I think that’s the biggest question on everyone’s mind is what to do with Sheffer uh and he is 12 this is the highest price that we’ve seen on Sheffer and the highest price we’ve seen

On any golfer in I can effort that um if you want to fill Buster for a little bit and I can check when the last time we’ve seen a golfer price 12.8 but I think because of DraftKings just really capricious in how how they are approaching each week from a pricing

Standpoint after you know in a 69 man field we go back to the tighter more concise pricing now we have golfers 12.8 to 5K and I think because you have a a fairly robust range of 5K golfers and a lot of really good golfers in the sixes

Remembers where they were when this person won uh Ricky for instance tiger of course uh but Elite iron play here with a lot of guts and because there was so much difficulty uh hitting greens and the rough was so deep and punitive for everyone at the API

This I would put a higher degree of skill around the greens than last week um you know web Simpson types I would say it’s because so many pot bunkers around the greens um plus you know you have these two tiered greens the putting is difficult even on the non-ball Striking is type type

Holes it’s it’s really a pure te to Green type course that’s it um so especially no blowups no ejections because you can hear there’s a ton of water look at 17 right so um only thing I would add to that is uh you know it’s played in March now

Right so in the first 40 Years of the players it was played in March and then from 2007 to 2018 it moved to may I literally just saw ghost in your background yep what is that shadow that completely threw me off did you see that no yeah a sh a

Since the switch to to back to March the guy who wins the players is the guy who’s gaining 1.5 Strokes throughout the season right like you cannot show up to this golf course and be in bad form and expect to find it at the Players right

Um and the three guys this year that are giving gaining over 1.5 Strokes total uh per round this year is Scotty Sheffer Xander Schley and Matthew Pavone interestingly enough you’re back you’re back with Xander that he showed enough on Sunday for you to be back I knew the

Ex people would be back just give it to him Xander yeah we’re back I like sander a lot there well here here last week so if we take last week as an example um there were some real dust balls I will take Klay was a dust ball his te

The green was terrible Fleetwood retire him retire that guy uh Fitzpatrick terrible Pavone didn’t play well TI green um morawa disappointing right and then you look at the guys who who performed well both with their irons and then straight TD green Sheffer of course um Lowry although he ran into a

Buzz saw on Sunday and I think he just realized I could never beat this person in my career um putam wisey and seuk Kim seuk Kim couldn’t find a putter until Sunday and he found a putter right he’s had seven this year I think he’s changed it or seven

Recently at least yeah see Kim is a winner here and he doesn’t need form for anything but he performed outside of his score I think he was top four TD green last week and he was number one going into Sunday um and hogi continues to perform continues to hit those irons well right

Yeah um yeah so I think you’ve got a case study here of players who performed well going into play uh API and performed well at API and have performed well at the players that I think you can carry over the three there there’s some traps too I mean there’s some traps

People love Russell Henley I think it’s a trap uh people like Max hom sorry Max I think he’s a trap this week um I agree I don’t love hom right now either he putt well Todd putw Henley I can’t watch him swing um he putw I’m not taking those

Guys so the second thing is is that I don’t think anyone has won backto back at the Players Chef not not only has no one won back toback in the 40 plus year history of the players a defending Champion has never finished better than fifth right so like even prime Tiger has

Never finished better than fifth in a titled events which is fascina gonna be fascinating to watch Sheffer because sheffler over the last two and a half three years is like a 50% of the time essentially he finishes in the top five so scheme absolutely and I agree with

That yeah yeah so it’s like a 5050 proposition Sheffer finishes in the top five yet defending Champion has never finished top five at the Players yes in its 40 plus year history and you know you’ve got guys like tiger sheffer’s will never be a tiger no one will ever

Be a tiger but sheffler is as close to him right now on tour than there ever has been or at least recent history and uh you know sheffer’s a different cat I agree but if you want a narrative anti- sheffler narrative there’s one so still

Games on tour they called him the best uh Jason day same thing Ricky Fowler same thing Tiger Woods no explanation so what those guys are hands guys touch guys recovery guys U that is going to be a fundamental piece of what you need to have this week in my opinion scares me

About guys like Tom hogi because I don’t know much about yeah um no he does not have a very good shirt game um okay so let’s just talk about let’s just have the Sheffer conversation up top because I think that um it’s very ballsy to fade him right

But I I am happy to lay out the argument for why you could fade him this week so we can do are you Prosecuting or defending your defense your defense of playing him and I’m gonna play the prosecutor of why you should fade him

It’s been a really tough event for chalk over the years and that’s because the variability of this golf course is at an all-time high probably even higher than the Honda Classic where you can get tripped up so easily here and make a ton a ton of big numbers so

So you know it’s a 4-day golf tournament right crazy things can happen in a 4-day golf tournament we have this incredible long-term 40-year trend of Defending Champions really struggling in their title defense at TPC s grass for whatever reason and he’s going to be what 50% at 12.8 because there’s a lower

That’s I just haven’t I just haven’t spoken to anyone this morning that’s thinking of fading him myself included wait you could be the prosecution and not fade him this is this is a no I’m just I’m just laying trial I’m laying out the case because I think it’s important to talk about I

Or he’ll you know when he’s out firmly out of it he’ll then he’ll start making birdies when the pressure he puts himself is off he’ll perform if it’s Thursday and he’s got to win a major like an Augusta cammo MH so I don’t love I don’t love I listen Hideki played well

So the injury news from whomever that came from shame on you because Hideki played still amazing I know tell me about it the the Hideki pivot to Tom Kim at the 11th hour because I fell I fell into the Hideki injury news um was very costly for me from a draftking standpoint okay

So you know if if if Sheffer is a lock if that’s an easy one if that’s a free if that’s a that’s a free Square um who’s the second man in like how comfortable how high do you feel going up comfortably because I like Xander a

Lot more than you do this week but like I played around with some Sheffer Xander lineups and I think it leaves you with 6.4k left for the next four golfers that’s pretty tough even if like I I I there’s some guys in the 5K I like but if you’re playing

Sheffer I think the guy I like the most in the nines as a second man in um would be either Hideki or morawa and I say that with some considerable concerns about morawa like who who would you feel as comfortable with as a second man in and do you agree that if you’re

Chair uh so that that doesn’t interest me at all Windam Clark you know I I like great player but I’m Allin on sheffler and the issue for the defense is that even on 87 plus when you’re talking OB bear Burns tough I didn’t like that with Burns last week

Lowry you saw really his ceiling um to me he got sty playing with sheffler I mean he just it’s just you can see the imbalance in the game between Sheffer and H yeah and then I can’t believe Fleet would still 8 I just cannot believe he must have some sort of

And how much easier it is for Sheffer to separate himself from the rest of the pack on a golf course like Bay Hill versus a golf course like the American Express right if you put Sheffer on a golf course where the driving accuracy percentage is below 60% and the greens

And regulation percentage is below 60% Bay Hill had both those TPC sass also have both of those it is that much easier for Sheffer to separate himself um because there’s less putting variance right and there’s more TD green skill required and you get that again with TPC

Sass where it’s like yeah there’s a lot of variability to this golf course because of the water but the inverse of that argument is that’s just more ammo for Sheffer to be able to separate himself because the harder a golf course is from T to Green the the more that
