Into this so what I’m going to impart on you today is something that I learned a long time ago as I was a young teaching professional and a man that I mentored under Hank Johnson who was a great goth instructor taught me this and it is
Stuck with me ever since and it’s really really shaped the way that I try and get my students to learn when I was around Hank for 3 four five years whatever the number was he was really doing a lot of research on actually how the body learned how we learned as human BRS
Beings how the brain was involved and this is where this knowledge came from this didn’t come from golfers this came from people who understood motor skill learning so let me show you what he taught me and then we’re going to come back and I’m going to show you how to
Apply it to your golf game the information that Hank taught me was about habits and how we create new habits and then what the brain does with habits um that we have and he was using this information of of how our brain handles habits to better his teaching ability and then
What he was teaching to me and to others as well in so that we could become better golf instructors and get our students to make more longlasting results so that you wouldn’t have a guy come to you for a lesson and he does better but then two
Weeks later he comes back and he’s doing the same old thing so here was the information in our brain in our body we have three systems okay we have a habit system we have a learn Learning System and we have a performance system and understanding how these systems work
Together was the important news so your golf swing is a habit even if you’re new to the game I get new people all the time well I want to take lessons so I don’t develop bad habits you already got habits you it’s just everything that we
Do in life is a habit okay so you’ve already got habits so your golf swing is a habit and if your golf swing isn’t what you want it to be you’ve got to create a new habit we have to create a new motion which becomes a new habit and the new
Habit needs to become more powerful than the old habit so in order to do this in order to create a new habit we have to get over into our Learning System now the learning system is connected to the Habit system or you can say plugged in to The Habit
System and the only way that we can make a new motion okay become a habit is through a number of correct repetitions now I don’t know what that number is I think it’s different for everybody I think the person who is a more athletic person that has better hand eye
Coordination uh they seem to be a little more in tune with their body I think their Learning Time curve is shorter than that person who is not very athletic who doesn’t have good hand eye coordination now that doesn’t mean that one that neither one of them can learn
Or or nothing it just it affects that timetable so we have to do a number of correct repetitions in order to create a habit this is the important information because this is why I teach the way that I do and why I get my students to do so
Many I want them to do so many drills without the balls lots and lots of correct repetitions because the more correct repetitions we do the sooner it becomes a habit all right now here’s where golfers fail in their attempts to change their golf swing to change their
Motor pattern it’s this habit here the performance Hab the performance system now the performance system is also plugged in to The Habit system and here’s the big information that any time that we are trying to perform it will only allow what our habit is to come out because when we are trying to
Perform the performance system goes over here and it shuts off the Learning System so whenever we are trying to perform the only thing that’s going to come out is what is our habit now what is performance well performing is just standing on the driving range and trying to hit a good
Shot that’s performing performing is going out on the golf course and playing and trying to shoot a score performing is being out and playing with your buddies and gambling playing in a tournament anything that we are very interest interested in the outcome of the shot is performing and when we are trying to
Perform it cuts off learning now golfers want to go out and practice they want to perform and have it go over here and then learn but the learning and the performance are not connected our brain and our body only work this way and this way they do not connect these
Two so if you are going to try and learn a new motion you have to do a certain number of correct repetitions now does that mean that you can’t go to the driving range no so let’s go back to the driving range and let me show you a
Drill that is being performed with this in mind so I’m going to give you one good example today of this method of learning and it’s again it’s about those correct repetitions and it’s just about the motion and perfecting that motion and getting that motion correct more times
Than incorrect so we’re going to I’m going to show you a drill that I might use if I’ve got somebody that has a swing path problem okay and here again I always try and get people to set up in a practice station and I’ve got a very
Simple one here I’ve got one club on the ground that would be my target line okay and I’ve got another club on the ground here that’s parallel to it so that when I get a ball in here and get set up this line right here is about even
With my toes are right underneath of my hands so if you’re a person that has a problem with say a golf club that gets back behind you in the back swing or it stays out in front of you too long or on the downswing you get over the top this
Would be a great practice station for you and a great way to practice to change that pattern in your golf swing so here’s what we’re going to do I’m going to get set up and what I want is I want my club my shaft of the
Club I’m swinging to when it gets to parallel to the ground that it is parallel to its Target line so that is why I have this club on the ground that’s my guide that if my club is right on top of that one I’m on plane okay I
Want that club face to be kind of right in line with my spine all right and then when I go to the top of the back swing I want this shaft pointing over here at my target line that’s on plane all right now the next step would be that
When I get to start the downswing I want my club to come back down and get right back over the club here on the ground that’s back here by my feet so if I can get my golf club to move on plane in those three places well then I am giving my body
Feedback on where I need to be so now let’s put into practice the idea that we need more correct repetitions than incorrect ones in order for me to learn so if I just stood here and hit golf balls one after another after another and I was concerned about the quality of
The shot that I hit I’m probably never going to get my back swing correct okay never so I want to make sure that I am making correct repetitions and I want to do it without the ball I mean ball can be sitting there but I’m not going to actually hit
A shot I want to do it R fairly slow okay so what I would do if this is what I was trying to fix and I was out practicing I would do three rehearsal swings for every one shot okay so I’m going to stand in here
And I’m going to go slow and I’m going to let my eyes look and see that I’m doing it correctly there’s position one position two position three turn through the ball okay so there’s one repetition now position one 2 3 impact let’s do it one more time position one 2
3 impact okay now I’m going to now hit a shot again I don’t want to go fast I want to go nice and slow and I’m going to do my best to find those positions now what if I don’t find that correct position when I hit the shot does it
Matter and the answer is no it doesn’t really matter and why doesn’t it matter right off the bat because you got to look at the numbers I just did four swings I know for a fact I did three of them correct if the one swing when I hit the golf ball was
Incorrect so be it but if I continue to do this drill and practice this way over a period of Time the numbers are going to get in my favor and when those numbers get in my favor I’m learning now going back to what I said when I was beside my garage and showing
You the diagram and we have to do correct repetitions I don’t know how many repetitions that is but if you figure out a way to kind of monitor your progress whether you use your iPhone your cell phone and take some videos of your golf swing and just keep checking and monitoring your
Position you’ll slowly start to see your golf swing change and so therefore you have to be patient you have to be diligent about about your practice and you just have to make sure that you’re doing it correctly so here again one more time position one position two position three impact okay nice and
Slow position one position two position three impact one last rehearsal position one position two position three impact okay now let’s hit one nice and slow not the greatest shot I’ve ever hit in my life big time left and a little fat but a great practice session well I hope this little
Demonstration and this little talk has enlightened you a little bit and and given you a little more knowledge about what it takes and what you have to do in order to change motions okay we’re not talking about shooting lower scores anything like that we’re talking about fixing the motion of your golf
Swing now the people that struggle the most with this are the people that play a lot of golf a lot of times they play competitively a little bit they like to gamble on the golf course they don’t practice as much as they play very difficult because they’re always in
Competition they’re never in their Learning Center they’re never in their Learning System if you want to make change you got to make sure that you’re in your learning system and you’re doing correct repetitions well I want to thank you so much for coming in and watching this
