What makes them dangerous and I mean it’s been probably six games since Nebraska did didn’t have a guy step up in a big time moment you have probably go back to that Northwestern Road game I would I would say it’s accurate I I have a couple things to say about this first
Of all I think the fact or the narrative that rink Mast hasn’t been doing as much not offensively kind of being overplayed because when you look at his game by game numbers he’s in double figures in five of the last seven games and one of those two games in which he
Wasn’t in double figures he had eight points so he’s still scoring I get it he’s not not like lighting it up but you don’t really need him to and on top of that he has at least six rebounds in all of those games but one and that was
Against Indiana on the road where he wasn’t really a factor at all I like rank to to have a good game tonight obviously do I think he’s going to put up 34 and 10 again no but he shot the three incredibly well the first time out
Against Ohio State but the things he did inside too I think Fred did a really nice job of getting him a favorable match up I think he matches up well with his Ohio State team he’s tough to guard because he can spread the floor and spread things out offensively so I like
Rink to to have a good game here tonight I don’t know if he’ll be the Nebraska’s leading score or not but I think he’ll have a pretty solid impact on the game if I had to bet who’s going to be Nebraska’s leading score tonight I I’ll
Give it to Bryce he’s been playing very well as of late and then another thing that I’ll say and this is just about the game in general and maybe people will get mad at me for this but if Nebraska wins tonight I have the key in hand to
Lock up that lock okay gotcha that’s that’s what it is where you’re not you’re not wrong you you get a what fourth quad win quad one win fifth so they’re at one it fluctuates from time to time depending on what mood K State
Is in but yeah you get a you get a fifth yeah they lock up the NCAA tournament tonight period yeah how do and they may have read that on their phones his friend would say they definitely have so how do they come out they come out tight
They come out Loose do they come out Illinois ready or do they come out Maryland ready well what what they need to come out with is defensive intensity yeah what it comes down to when Nebraska goes on the road how many times this season have you
Heard such and such team is shooting the best percentage they have from behind the ark all season long this is the most three-pointers they’ve hitting a game all year long yada y y the list goes on and on five or six times Nebraska’s gotone on the road this season and it’s
Been that story of man this team hasn’t shot the ball like this all year long whenever it’s a trend like that you don’t look at the opponent you look at the defense so I I think it starts with Nebraska defensively stepping up and and making plays having that that full
Effort doing the the little things the fundamentals at a very very high level indana exactly and what happens you come out with a 15-point victory aside from that F minute stretch where everybody in Nebraska had to clinch I mean you have so many moments this season on the road
Where it’s been the defense that’s let you down like that’s what I think it comes down to is is if Nebraska wants to set the tone in this game tonight the first five minutes first 10 minutes of this game you need to have the best defensive intensity you’ve had all year
Because Ohio State’s got good feelings going on they’re playing at home they’ve had that boost of of firing their coach and going with the interim you need to make sure they don’t have good feelings to start out in this game and it starts to me on the defensive side of the floor
And and what flipped that in round one against Ohio State Bruce Thorton was killing Nebraska I think the bucke guys were up eight early on against Nebraska and uh insert uh the the the mayor Jr uh Sammy hyberg came in locked up Bruce thoron at Ohio State was never the same
It was that defense that you mentioned Elijah and I know Illinois kind of did their thing offensively but you saw Better Effort defensively against Illinois you saw Mia against Northwestern they perceivably have turned the quarter with their Indiana outing and the their last three games in Lincoln have been very high level
Defensive intensity so yeah it’s going to be about the defense they got to shut Thorton down and then find some folks to either stay hot if you’re Bryce if you’re Jawan for sure but uh get some running mates with you and it could be a couple of running mates that have not
Been as consistent on offense we may also not see Jameson battle on the other side tonight he’s questionable um I don’t believe he played in their last game I think he was out at Michigan State so we’ll we’ll see what updates we have there but I would say that’s a
Pretty significant out if he if he doesn’t play and what I think that could really open up is the potential for Mass to find Gary in that download kind of that dunker spot that you’ve seen them running a lot a lot of the season if battle’s not out you look for that that

This matchup before we get into a recent pod appearance in the topic again a HomeField Advantage but home Field’s been great PBA per se for Nebraska basketball 17 and one it’s not been so great for Nebraska football they look to to fix that but first things first how
About a second Road win for Fred and Company tonight in conference be it would be pretty big um Nebraska you know a slight Underdog in this game um probably a slight Underdog for the last time in the regular season they should be favored it’s certainly at home over Ruckers and over Michigan on
On the road in the the regular season finale so this is kind of the one where when we were looking at it maybe a week or two out you know you’re like H that might be kind of tough Nebraska’s played really well of late so I kind of view
This as a a little bit of maybe bump the ceiling up a tiny bit um because I think at this point um nothing’s changed from from the last time I spoke to you guys like I I would say at this point Nebraska’s pretty safely in and I think
Most of the projections say that uh in terms of the NCA tournament this becomes that an opportunity to to show that Nebraska’s not just in but maybe they’re closing the regular season on a on a real run of momentum here um and and then we can stop worrying about uh stop
Well with a win tonight you stop worrying about I think is is Nebraska in did they have the resume to be there to like could this team do something in the NCA tournament other than just get there it’s Brandon vogle with us here on hail Varsity radio and Brandon one of
The things that Connor brought up and it might be on the team’s mind tonight is is it when tonight and your a lock for the NCA tournament is that the the place you’re at with another quad one opportunity tonight obviously loss against Michigan or loss against Ruckers
Wouldn’t look great but you think that the resume that they’ve built combined with another quad one victory tonight might be enough do do you feel the same I do I I mean I think I think getting to to 21 wins you know based on some of the models that are out there is
Kind of the point where things tip pretty definitively in in Nebraska’s in favor and and they’re right on the cusp with that they’ve got three chances left to to get that that remaining win um and to do it tonight against the quad one team uh would would be would be would
Would be a bonus um and you know like I don’t know how much the the committee ends up looking at this but they flashed it during Nebraska’s last game you know the absence of quad three or four losses um I think speaks to the speaks to where
This team is too um so not in any danger of that tonight uh so it’s kind of it’s kind of all upside from from my perspective uh for the Huskers tonight in Columbus Brandon vle is with us on Hil Varsity radio I was watching some things earlier today and the topic of
Fred hyberg being Big 10 coach of the year is quite a popular one on the hardwood uh would you agree that he is the front runner I I think so um you know it it showed up during during the Huskers last game too uh Ben Jacobson probably will
Have will have some support um but for for hyberg you know when you stack all of his Seasons to this point and it’s it’s been kind of a a strange and twisty and tur T ride um over his time at Nebraska but you just look at it the win
Total has increased each year um culminating in this year so far I now it it takes some special circumstances at a lot of places I think for a coach to be in you know year five before before you’re kind of knocking on the tournament door but here they are um and
And I think Nebraska has this Nebraska team when we look at the parts it had in the off season um new players returning players Etc I think it was clear at least to me that that hyberg liked the potential of this team I think they’re close to maximizing like what they’re
What they’re capable of at this point um and and if you can do that uh that’s that’s the recipe for coach of the a contention in any sport I think Vogues uh you were on a podcast this week uh and and they were talking about your
Story uh when it comes to to home field what what’s your your feeling here why is Nebraska so good apples and oranges at home in basketball but why has it been less than uh difficult it it’s probably been difficult but the results haven’t looked that way for Nebraska at home at Memorial
Stadium yeah it’s a it’s a tough one to answer I would the thing that I would point to or at least theorize is you know the difference in history between the two programs like Pinnacle Bank Arena is still new enough and it’s just a nice place place to go to go watch a
Basketball game is convenient in terms of its location um in Nebraska of course has never lacked for fan support for for any sport but when you when you look at the Huskers as the only kind of major major basketball team that hasn’t won an NCA Tournament game um you kind of go
Into those games I think a little bit Freer Nebraska uh football has so many expectations um all earned uh based on their their story history that I think the mindset is just different when you go to a Husker football game particularly of late and you’ve had so
Many close losses you’re kind of uh it’s a little like basketball in basketball through its history you’re ready for you’re waiting for the other foot to drop football it seems strange to have that kind of sense of panic if you’re of a certain age um and and live through
You know sort of at least pieces of the Osborne era um much less anything beyond that like I think it’s just there’s so much more tension around football um playing at home that just doesn’t exist for basketball I don’t think well BR as you talked home field advantage as well
Does the the plans the the Demolition and and Construction of South Stadium does that make you feel better about home field advantage in the future it’s lowering the the capacity of Memorial Stadium but you might get some seats that are closer to the stadium that that
Student section move St is that good for uh the the environment Memorial Stadium is it bad for it time will tell what’s your take there um I think it it has the potential to be to be a positive um I definitely don’t look at it as as a negative um and
I mean I guess if we’re talking about you know a 10year look back of Nebraska’s performance relative to expectations at home maybe changing something is good I mean ultimately I think the only thing that that kind of flips the the HomeField Advantage a little bit back on
For Nebraska in football is is simply winning winning some big some big games there in particular I mean you’re always going to schedule you know a handful of games non-conference that you’re you’re probably going to win and Nebraska still has won those for the most part yeah
They lost to Troy and they lost to Georgia Southern and Northern Illinois um but for the most part they still win those games they just don’t play quite as well as expected based on based on the numbers that are out there um but when’s the last one last like big home
Game Nebraska’s won uh in terms of football ory in in 2015 when you were like four yeah I mean you was nine years dude yeah yeah I mean and in terms of ranking it certainly was but it was kind of like that was kind of like oh you know this
Was a nice dessert at the end of a of a meal that wasn’t all that great um you know so at least we got at least we got the coffee ice cream I I think I think you can go Oregon 2016 I mean that was a college football playoff team they beat in
2015 yeah that’s probably that’s probably close with what we knew about those two teams then and and you know Nebraska would go on to have a good 2016 Oregon would not but that that felt like a pretty big game and I mean there’s just there’s there’s not an easy one to
Point to like we have to kind of like throw out candidates and like what what if we talk about this one and I think that’s the point like um because what you want HomeField to be is even if you’re a program that’s maybe struggling
A little bit or in the midst of you know a a rebuild you would hope that you can you can just knock one of these teams off at home even if you’re not quite there yet even if it’s a little bit lucky which I guess is kind of what what
That Michigan State one when was in 2015 one more thing one more difference between Pinnacle Bank Arena Memorial Stadium Brandon alcohol you have bars very close to Pinnacle Bank Arena and beer sales inside the arena you have to sneak yours in Vogues to to Memorial Stadium uh let’s not say you let’s say
One would have to right well boog’s never had to sneak anything in uh so I I I’m interested that that is I just wonder it’d be fun to to do a straw poll next big 10 media 10 media days even with the new look big 10 and say all
Right do do you think of Nebraska as a place man I don’t ever want to go back there and play again and that’s been a long long time since that’s probably been in the back of somebody’s mind an opponent yeah I I I would I would agree um it’s
Uh and it’s it’s it’s hard because places you know it’s always full um people are there they’re excited they’re they’re ready to like have an impact on the game and so often like it’s just it’s it’s been hard um in terms of how a lot of those games have unfolded a lot

Coming up in 25 minutes thoughts on the college football playoff shakeup bgs I know you wrote about uh 14 being that new number with the college football playoff and uh you’ve got your your automatic qualifiers and the Big 10 and I think the the TV mind with petiti will rub off on the
SEC with those automatic qualifiers making sure there is must C TV regular season and you go to 14 I know we’re hop skipping and jumping from 12 but 14 is that NFL model uh with your AFC NFC title game and uh you’ll get your best runner up in the conference title game
As it looks and your uh participant and your conference Champion winner man what do you think of this smoke with with Notre Dame and A&M and expansion here as they are moving towards for before the the ink is dry for 12 yeah I don’t love it um so I can’t I
Can’t be surpris the like the entire history of the sport is is one of being essentially ungoverned in which the the powerful uh continue to to tilt the field to get more powerful I mean I went back and analyzed the previous 10 years uh of college football
Playoff rankings you know looking at it as if we had a 12 team playoff and found then you know the Big 10 in the SEC you’re basically going to average four so it’s like well what if we expand this to 14 um and instead of just knowing
We’re probably going to get we’re going to get three teams in every year in sec in the Big 10 uh what if we could get four um that’s going to happen most of the time it’s like let’s legislate into the game that we get three every year um
And you know the the Revenue split like the tough thing with this 14 team proposal that’s out there is like kind of can’t argue with it it’s like Yeah The Big 10 and the SEC are providing the most value but it just like it’s it’s further professionalization in in my
Mind which uh as somebody who doesn’t watch a ton of NFL because it just doesn’t appeal to me that much like I I I feel bad for kind of like the remaining half to 2third of the sport that so clearly with this proposal just doesn’t matter it’s just like you don’t
Have the leverage to make any of these calls like it’s it’s the big 10 the SEC uh we’ll throw an extra spot in for the ACC in the Big 12 which they’ll be happy with because hey it’s an extra spot voges let’s uh wrap up here rule
Would have had a couple of his Baylor teams in the playoff correct yeah I’m trying to remember I think just just the one just 2019 would have made it the one that lost to okah in the Big 12 title game is that right Loki state or Oklahoma State right yeah
Um that that one I think I think that one would have that team would have made it um and then well his Temple teams his final year there was what I don’t know 2016 um his Temple teams weren’t I don’t think close enough to to get that

As we were you know we’ve fast forwarded to the topic of 14 teams but how do you see things negotiating slash shaking out with everybody else and then the SEC in the Big 10 when it comes to automatic qualifiers here for the future of the playoff yeah I don’t know if it’s going
To be unpleasant or just uncomfortable for everybody but it’s uh it’s sure going to be different and going to the 14 playoffs I mean with with with two conferences having three automatic births um you know I think I think for the you know I think overall looking
Inside out if you’re if you’re in there if you’re in the SEC or the Big 10 or even the Big 12 any of these conferences you you’re probably excited that the opportunity is going to come um these things always bring about unintended consequences and all we can
Do is really speculate what those might be and those might be unpleasant but um it’ll be interesting to see how bus survive and I’m not saying they won’t I’m just saying it’s going to be interesting to see how they it plays out with that um you know I my guess is the
Group of five isn’t going to be extremely happy about this um to think that you’re taking you know 10 teams from the major conferences you throw Notre Dame in there as a possibility um I mean the opportunity for them there’ll still be one for sure and maybe more but um it doesn’t look
Like to me that we’re expanding opportunities in that direction unless there’s just a really good team that you know ends up being ranked in the top 14 um you know as I look at it from afar now and and sort of away from it I don’t
See I don’t see how 14 teams really exist in this thing um uh but doesn’t mean they won’t they’ll have a chance I mean it’ll go on it’ll be like the like the uh basketball tournament and it’ll create a lot of interest uh but I do
Think that uh the Bulls may be in Jeopardy here at least Bulls as we know them so I I and I don’t know what other unintended consequences there’ll be but we never know those they just come up all of a sudden Gary Barnett with this hail Varsity radio right now as it sits
The five automatic qualifying spots three for the Big 10 three for the SEC that’s the W that’s being floated out two for the Big 12 two for the ACC one for the group of five and then you get a spot for Notre Dame three at large teams and there was some some
Speculation that that Notre Dame and A&M may be thinking about the Big 10 what do you believe and do you think the ACC and the Big 12 are in some danger of getting swallowed up by the SEC and the Big 10 well sure I think that’s been imminent all that’s been imminent for
The last 10 five years for sure Notre Dame going to the big 10 is not a surprise that I think I’ve said this before my second year in the Big 10 94 I think 93 94 uh it it was we were sure Notre Dame was going to join the Big 10 wow absolutely
Sure and and I think all the administrators wanted it and it made so much sense uh and in the long run would have been good for for for Notre Dame but it’s fan base didn’t want to do it and so uh that’s what happened and then
You look at Notre Dame’s choices and and it’s it um two years ago three years years ago or you know a few more than that when they joined the ACC in basketball the reason that Notre Dame is leans towards the ACC is because of the number of private schools in the ACC
There’s only one private school in the Big 10 and that’s Northwestern well now uh yeah there’s only one so um in the ACC now uh and by adding Stanford uh you got another one you got six uh private schools and private schools uh at times need people to be on
Their side they need to have a cohesive voice and when you got five or six of them you can you can have a stronger voice obviously and I think that was the big reason why Notre D was leaning more towards the ACC is just because they had alliances with other private schools at
That time so I I could see it happening in the Big 10 and makes a lot of sense but uh especially uh since the Big 10 has sort of outpaced now in the ACC as has the SEC it’s uh you know we all know it’s going to go to eventually two big
Divisions and SEC and Big 10 and then who’s in those is going to make a difference so I don’t think being in the ACC I think you’re right they’re going to get swallowed UPS the Florida States and the Clemsons of the world maybe the North Carolinas and and Notre Dame would
Certainly fit into that mix I don’t understand uh you know A&M going to the big 10 makes no sense to me but you know I’m not doing it so is is it they they hate Texas and Texas hates A&M and I don’t think they’re real thrilled about Texas joining the
SEC A&M’s part of the aaou would they do it could they do it just to get away I know there’s a buyout Clause that was put in two years ago with the SEC but but A&M just told Jimbo to go away for 90 million so I mean my money’s not a
This is crazy money though I mean that I would I would assume uh and I think the Big 10 would love to probably get into Texas well I’m I’m sure there’s part of that you never say never or always and so anything could happen in the way
Things are going you know how long can A&M keep running away from Texas is my question and so um uh they’re already in the best football conference in the country um you know it doesn’t seem to make sense to me but who knows uh you know where this is going I
Think sometimes I just float this by uh Sports casters and and uh uh people do radio shows like you and me uh they have something to talk about well it’s kind of been it’s been fun I mean I love picking your brain on it what I picked
Your brain on how about three signing days because coaches don’t get time off anymore apparently December February and now summertime what do you think of this moving the December back to that Wednesday after the conference Title Games I think July or June is what I saw
And then uh that that would would now be a third signing day that that first Wednesday in February that used to be the signing day is three enough is three too many does it matter because you’re go to the portal anyway well I what you just said makes a
Lot of sense it it doesn’t really matter I mean it used to be you you literally you’re making a decision that’s going to affect the rest of your life and that’s how kids and parents looked at it and um that that isn’t true anymore so it it uh
I think they’re just trying to simplifi simplify things get get things done quickly uh you know coaches are making so much money they don’t need a vacation anymore so um it’s I don’t think that’s a piece of it but I do think that it’s it’s just not that as important a

Is there a is there a top tier is there a one two three for you or do you think it’s so deep that uh you’re a franchise that needs a quarterback you may not get the best guy but you could get a really good guy yeah well I think the the Broncos
Are in the middle of this thing too they’re they they’re going to jump in and be part of this watch it a little bit closer I I think Caleb Williams and I think Jaylen Daniels at LSU uh would be my first two choices no matter what uh Drake May is going to be
A system guy but a good system guy um Bo Knicks I think is an outstanding leader and a guy that’s that’s gonna uh take a good franchise and make it better uh I don’t know if he’s going to create a Joe burrow kind of situation but I do think
That he’s he’s uh he’s going to make it he’s going to be a good player um you know there’s there’s a number of guys like that out there but uh you know I think penck is the same way I think penix is a he’s just a guy that people
Are going to Rally around and he’s going to be a good player at that league and uh he’s going to be a system guy as well but he can make all the throws so there’s there’s know six six guys out there that I think Chris can all make it
But I think the two guys that can turn a whole uh program around be Caleb Williams and Daniels from LSU well and Justin Fields you’ve seen him up close and you know sounds like Atlanta’s the spot and there’s a lot of weapons really good college football players that ended up
In Atlanta when you look at the skill guys and I don’t know where Atlanta’s offensive line is right now but if Fields ends up back home in Atlanta I mean do we give up on quarterbacks too soon coach because I mean maybe a change of scenery is going to work for Fields
Because you know Chicago will go all in on Caleb Williams well I I don’t know whether we give up too soon but it’s so important that you have to have a special one yeah uh in the NFL now and and really in college I mean you don’t go anywhere
Without a quarterback it used to be the quarterback was a uh you know handed the ball off through a few passes but now he’s the whole offense and it and revolves around him and so you have to keep trying to find a quarterback because you’re not going to be uh a
Premier team in your league or your conference or your level unless you have one so you got to keep looking and apparently there’s enough money out there that you can you know you can you know throw one away and go get another one pretty easily last thought Gary bar

And not only the comeback but then the finish and how about who Nebraska turns to in the bottom of the T 10th to go close it out we we talked after that first weekend about dice his impressive performance against Baylor on the opening night but it’s not dice they
Turn to in the bottom of the 10th here they turned to a true freshman Tucker Timberman and timberman’s been lights out to start this season and to turn to him in that moment late in that ball game needing the win needing three outs says a lot about what Nebraska thinks
They have in Tucker tournament that’s a guy that’s based on how he’s played early in the season probably a likely future starter for you but to be able to go embrace the role coming out of the out every single time he’s come in this season he’s been lights out now going
And getting himself a close on the road after a furious comeback I understand you have the momentum that’s still a a tough spot to put a true freshman into with the pressure on you knowing uh your margin for error is thin a one-run lead they turn to him and he goes and closes
It out that says a lot about what Nebraska has in that guy well it’s nice to see them kind of flip that script in literally two weeks time from what you saw in in Arlington a couple of times you see some late leads slip away you
