Okay so one of the questions I’ve been getting a lot from you guys either in the comments section or actually from emails I do receive quite a few emails which I very much enjoy when you guys are asking questions about videos that you’ve seen on the channel that you want
Me to go into a little bit more detail on and there’s always two areas and these are two areas of popular questioning at the moment one of them is the short swing so that’s one of the things I’ve been talking about swinging a little bit shorter being more
Efficient we’re going to come back to that the second one is the pause swing now online social social media influencers and we obviously see some very very talented golfers come through on that platform and there seems to be one guy who’s grabbing a lot of attention who has a very deliberate
Pause in his swing and we’ve also seen this thing with people like Matt cmer in the past as well and I’m sure there’ll be lots of other good examples of golfers who have a very deliberate pause and the question that I’ve been receiving is would a pause actually
Benefit you in your golf swing so what I’m going to do is I’m going to do I’m going to put this to a massive scientific test and I’m going to hit three balls with a pause and and three balls normally and what we’re going to
Do is we’re going to take a little bit of look at what I think is going to be the inevitable difference between the two and then I’m going to talk to you about why you could start practicing with a bit of a pause drill but also the one detrimental thing that will happen
If you end up embedding a paw into your swing so I’m going to hit a couple of shots here uh just hit three shots down towards that 150 I’m going to hit three shots um pretty normal to start off with like so this that’s a pretty sort
Of smooth shot for me little bit leaky okay hit one more here they’re okay not the best in the world but they’re absolutely fine they’re pretty Avery okay so let’s do three shots now with a with a pause let me just check where I’m aimed up here right
Okay so I haven’t actually ever done a pause and then try to hit it full so this is going to be quite an interesting one so oh God okay let’s do two more one more okay right let’s have a look at some of the data on those first things first the
Inevitable obvious was the lossing clubhead speed and and I say that because of a couple of reasons one because I’ve never really done the pause drill before so I felt that I wasn’t going to be able to produce the same clubhead speed and that’s what I’ve been
Saying to people in my reply and the second one is that well one of the things that gives you this um this potential added bit of speed is in the back swing position when we swing our our arms back and as I use the swing buddy here to demonstrate this I let my
Left arm hit me on the back but then there’s a very quick change in Direction Where as I initiate my down swing my chest really moves down and left as my left arm is still going back so you can see the way that the swing
Buddy here hits me on the back as I change direction and then I can Propel that off and that’s what gives me that feeling of effortless sort of speed so to speak so when I’m hitting shots you know I don’t I I very much feel that sort of nice and
Smooth back and then that little change in Direction which helps me get that little bit of extra distance without trying to hit it too hard so when you pause you’re inevitably going to lose that which is one of the disadvantages one of the things that I
Would say is that as a drill pausing is something that I’ll use a lot with students and the reason for that is because I think it helps students sort of reconcile the position that they’re in so if I’m working with somebody in a
In a in a first move or a top of the back swing I will often ask them to pause and then try and hit the shots from there where you could really benefit from introducing a pause is is that so one way is by practicing the positions that you’re working on in the
Back swing that will help you out of turn the second thing that I would say um by introducing the pause is that if you don’t hit the ball very well at all in the downswing once you’ve paused then that’s probably a good indication that you don’t understand the downswing move
Well and really there’s two key movements that you’re looking to introduce the first one is to move the chest down the second one is to straighten the arm so if I sort of do that so I pause here and then you can see as I start the downwing I move my
Chest as I straighten my arm and it’s the blend of both of those movements that gives me that ability to still hit the ball so is a paw really a good thing I would say I wouldn’t Advocate it for a full swing permanent change because I
Think it’s just going to lose Club head speed and that’s not something most amateur have an abundance to sacrifice in the first place the second thing is it’s a good drill to practice I think that could work well for you particularly if you don’t quite understand the down string sequence
That’s where it has its positives but overall would I suggest you start introducing the port Dr well it’s your decision it’s your goal swing but it’s not something I’d be teaching I’ll see you guys again really soon

Hi Russ, a question from your Austrian fan regarding the Swing Buddy: wouldn‘t it make sense to use both hands? Sometimes you use the lead arm, sometimes the trail arm? Why and for wat reason. Regards, Werner Trattnig
I've used a slight "pause" at the top in the past. I found that a pause at the top allowed my lower body to start the down-swing. The pause became my trigger to start my legs & hips.
I tried the pause and for me it encouraged me to rush to the ball with my hands and arms. For me if I just slowed the back swing, I found it helped me start the down swing with a shift to my front foot while my hands and arms started down last. Much better result.
Great video and really useful to see you do it without any prep or editing! Makes sense to me to use it in practice, but not on the course.
