Call um I mean they love this they’re in this they’re fans just as much as we are but they want to see true real wrestling and they want to call the matches as fairly as possible so we always appreciate that and uh and the stage has been set here at
Mechanics Bank Arena here’s the sophomore Henry is Leon you know he’s coming out of Birmingham he’s obviously a Jimmy madero’s boy and then he’s coming against the other freshman along the way with areni you know he just had a birthday a couple days ago he’d like to finish off the full week happy
Birthday that’s what he wants to celebrate tonight and here comes Kiku 2024 state championship here we go buddy here we go buckle up ladies and gentlemen it’s going to be a wild ride you know there’s got to be a little bit of pressure taken off of uh the power
Wrestlers absolutely but I I wonder how much of the wonder how much of the records that they have in their heads ay can we get more than four Champs can we set the record here we go at 106 lbs state championship State finals areni kenu taking on Henry
Eikon all right and I really liked eon’s uh pressure in his semi-final match just constant forward pressure and in on a shot already on the Poway wrestler and two take down already for Birmingham as he takes a quick two- lead and I’m telling you that forward pressure he’s
Able to press pressure pressure pressure and then shoot in and he’s getting in on a lot of his shots but Kiku coming up to his feet slowly trying to face now coming up on his own shot looking for possible reversal here good single leg defense here by the Birmingham freshman
And he’s able to get away so that’s only one Escape for the Powe wrestler you know they didn’t get a chance to wrestle each other at the at the Battle for the belt uh because um uh keinu was up a weight class he was up at 113 lbs they both were the final
There down in Tula but uh as Leon looked really really solid over the last couple weeks very solid and continues here with the forward pressure going in for a shot short offense by keenu here and keik also had his brother wrestling at the California state
Championship shot here by a s in he’s in on a single leg wizard defense by kenu look at the technique from from Henry his head’s in really good position he’s in the crook of the knee of areni and he gets that pressure and that’s that technique he put that head on that
Knee he blocked off that wizard was able to come up on top and gets a Tak down and goes up 4-1 it’s textbook wrestling right there he’s going from one step to the next he’s doing everything he needs to do right making sure he gets that taked down making sure he gets that
Control Kiku down now 4 to one 22 seconds left here in the first period but I was like I was going to say brother was a state Placer this year as well and his father was a world team trials uh finalist in Greco losing to Kamal Bay but wrestling runs in that
Family as you can tell and great mat return here by Henry as he’s trying to finish this ride out with 10 seconds left here in the first period kenu trying to get away but great drop down by Alis Asian excuse me tongue twister for me as Leon’s doing extremely well
Controlling the hips you know kinu was able to get up to his feet multiple times there and the m return and you see it a lot at the at the at the smaller levels with 106 113 but we’re starting to see it at the 215 and the heavy
Weights that tight waist and being able to pull that hip down and not letting them gain space we’ve seen that a lot over the last couple years and Aon showed it here with the two mat returns oh and great turn and Escape there good little byy now some short offense here good
Elbow control though by slick in and Nice Shot here by kein who gets in on his own single leg now not fully committed though great hand Head Hands defense by a slicky [Applause] in and ear to ear so might not get much much action there but you know he got
That taked down with the ankle pick there in the first you know kenu leads with that left leg again that’s two crossovers that he stepped across himself was able to hit that shot and a nice little counter by his Leon Head Hands defense from kenu yeah kenu doing a much better job stopping
The offense of as leian looking over at the clock though as Kiku a minute left here in the second he knows he needs to get a taked down here to tie it up and there’s that outside sweep singer there’s that whizard Shin wizard defense trying to limp arm out but
Keanu’s got that whizard in very tight oh and he’s able to just limp arm out get another two puts himself up by four that’s that announcer Jinx being able to say Hey you know can’t get that limp arm out and as soon as he clears that hip
Gets the Tak down and an impressive 6-2 start for Henry as [Applause] Leon now trailing by three with 30 seconds left here in the second shop from space for keenu that’s not going to get it done against a sophomore from Birmingham 5 Seconds To Go In the
Period we move to the third period a 6-3 lead for Henry as Leon and we’re in the neutral position he’s been able to get two takedowns here on kenu that motion there’s the overhook for for Kiku again he’s got to get two takedowns here obviously down by
Three yeah really put himself in a position where he’s really fighting from behind now we really haven’t seen him in the top position obviously with the two takedowns from from his Leon but and normally that’s what Po’s known for so I’m interest interested to see if
Kikino can get a takedown here be down by one and possibly if he can work some magic on top but is leing able to push kinu out there 20 left he’s amazing on his feet you know as we look down at his his little spreadsheet here and not only
Being a U7 World Champ you know at the World Championships being out there not saying that he’s a World Champ but going out to the World Championships um you know Jimmy Madera he gets those kids being able to that Greco and the freestyle that’s that three levels that
Three different styles as we see it here being able to take two takedowns and as we speak kenu trying to work that upper body just under a minute left still trailing by three slicky in playing a little bit of the defense game here he knows he really
Doesn’t have to do too much doesn’t want to risk too much being up by three shot attempt there by peu but right into the front head of as liian liian got it locked up taking a quick look at the clock he doesn’t look like he’s trying to even move from there
We’ll get a quick stalemate call 26 seconds left coach Meer saying hey let’s pick it up a little bit here 25 he’s going to need two takedowns or obviously a little bit of back points Captain OB sitting next to you bu there’s that pressure from 15 to
Go and now keiku really really fighting for it but this is all Henry Asian as he keeps a strong defense your winner and state champion sophomore from Birmingham High School Henry [Applause] Aon what a phenomenal first match Orin that was great great offense by the sophomore out of Birmingham very impressive he’s
Impressed me all tournament all season and kudos to the Freshman out of Poway here comes a backflip yeah there’s the back give the people what they want you know and that’s not that uh showboating in reality that’s just the you know I I see
It I I look back to like the 2006 2007 finals where that backflip started to happen I I look at like a Calvin Deval who did it you’re not trying to show up your opponent you’ve got that emotion you’ve got that lovely feeling in your body that you just want a state
Championship you’re going to go celebrate I think it’s totally appropriate I mean you see those NFL players they’re celebrating In The End Zone uh he didn’t take out a Sharpie from his suck and signing any any autographs or doing that I think a backflip is uh Gable approved Gable steveson approved let’s just
Say and here we go another Poway wrest yep absolutely here’s another Poway wrestler you know you just look at coach Myers and he’s still sitting in the chair he’s like I got seven in the finals get comfortable coach you might be there for a while here we go at 113 lbs Edwin Sierra
The one seed taking on the two seed Rocklin Zinin Sierra and zinin have wrestled three times this is the third time this the third matchup this year Sierra has been Victorious V Victorious Victor victorious twice before they wrestled at Doc B Sierra beat him six to3 I’m just curious if they wrestle with the Hall of Fame Del that’s what
I’m kind of looking at and I don’t see him wrestling the Hall of Fame dels no both wrestlers on their knees here oh they they wrestled in the duel um yes I was able to call that duel an impressive matchup and that and that’s where Sierra beat zinin as
Well and now they’re in the state finals so I’m sure a ton of coaching from both sides a ton of game planning Sierra probably trying to maintain the same game plan as before zinc and making some adjustments I’m sure and still scoreless just under a minute here left in the first period you
Know Z and only be in a sophomore and this his second state championship final you know obviously took second last year back for another round and he’s in on a high SE looking to cut the corner Edwin Sierra got that crotch lift trying to clear that left that right
Leg G Sierra what he’s got to do is he’s got to keep scooting keep scooting and step over the right leg of zinin try to get himself as much behind zinin as possible B zinin ducking that leg looking to scramble even more now coming out the
Bottom and you see that wrestling IQ you saw rock kind of look at the clock sees that he’s got 15 seconds left doesn’t want to put himself in danger but he also wants to be able to try to possibly get that Tak down and sier doing a great
Job posting on his head but zinin might do a better job right here oh short time time runs out I agree with the official they’re going they’re going to ultimately ask the assistant that chest wrap was really tight from Sierra he’s on his butt but they’re
Going to see if they’re going to call it no taked down I think that was a good call I think time ran out I think it was very close to a taked down but coach terapelli is not very happy about that he his argument is that ultimately
Sierra was on his butt and being controlled but that chest drop nothing had changed even from the higher position Sierra still had that chest WRA nice and tight there was Zero separation no points and we move on to the second now zinin will start here on the
Bottom right up to his feet able to get away within 6 seconds first point on the board and Sierra here with a nice underhook rist control snap zinin down but zinin really controlling That Elbow of Sierra it’s going to make yeah exactly and we’re going to go to stalemate that’s a very
Popular position that wrestler on bottom controlling That Elbow of the top wrestler kind of freeze them in that position often times will’ll go to stalemate as we just saw shot here by zinc and almost gets it on the leg reot by Sierra fended off by zinin I like the way zinin controlling
The center of the mat elbow control here probably going to shoot Sierra off the mat try to get a stall call there yeah but look at Sierra he’s control that wrist he’s up on top of the shoulder being able to stop that underhook from zinin or that outside sweep sinkle a
Good nice little defense there from Sierra and circles back in circles his own butt to the center and then he drives zinin out minute left here in the second still just the one Escape for zinin both wrestlers with some shot attempts but nothing really clearing the uh hands
Head defense of each other again into a short offense for Sierra that front headlock position you see a lot of guys with their right arm or whatever their hands on the chin extremely deep Sierra was actually really controlled there he had his hand on the chin they got towards the edge of
The the cylinder now we’re going to get a fresh start here with 25 to go in the period starting on his knee is zinin I think Sierra needs to be very careful not to expose his legs too much oh and a nice little reot from zinin five to go in the
Period Sierra trying to sneak one here but I mean again that elbow control by zinc and stalls him out so we’ll get Choice here by Sierra and he’ll choose bottom rightfully so and now Sierra trying to get away a quick cradle attempt by zinin Sierra able to get to his feet
Ties it up looks for a shot immediately minute 45 here we’re all knotted up at one and a shot attempt after a slide by by zinc and shot attemp by Sierra there both wrestlers in that drop knee position you you hear the crowd behind us saying he not doing anything well
It’s a one-1 match we’re all tied up both wrestlers in that drop knee position now they’re back up on their feet little heavy hands snap attempt and there’s those shot attempts by zinin he’s been the aggressor on his feet in my opinion again another shot a little high
C he’s a little too far out switches off to the underhook and really it’s the little things in matches like this it’s the way that zinin can control the elbows in this neutral position of Sierra that he’s able to somewhat control the match able to set up his own shots able to
Defend Sierra’s shots and I think Sierra’s uh dripping a little blood possibly on the edge of the mat just under a minute here left in the match that gives us a little bit of a break here to kind of thank the trainers they’ve done a great job all weekend
Long yeah you know not only does it take a village in this particular case it’s a whole city I mean Bakersfield does a great job they’ve done a wonderful job with the with the accommodations with hotels the transportation’s always wonderful here you know we’re treated a little bit better uh than most because
We’re able to uh have our own food service but um you know everybody puts their time effort and energy in to put on this show Troy’s not happy he is not happy he just kind of threw something at the trash can at us we won’t take that personally Troy we understand you know
It’s great to get the feedback from these wrestling coaches after calling a match on on talking about them they’re showing their real emotions here I’m not sure if he’s still upset about that original takedown at that end of the period there I’m sure I’m sure that’s what he
Was arguing two freaking Legends right here Troy John absolutely yeah you were right though that’s a decent amount of blood coming out it looked like coming out of the mouth not necessarily the nose I’m a little bit obstructed over on this side the trainer is right there again yeah it does look
Like a lip instead of a a nose bleed yeah definitely a lip don’t know if he cut his lip on [Applause] [Applause] Teeth great time though to catch your breath collect your thoughts for both zinin and Sierra thinking what do I got to do in this last minute to get a takedown and keep this from going in overtime how can I get past the defense finally get into a deep shot be able to
Finish and win this match and the bleeding has been stopped now it’s cleanup time oh they’re wrapping up his mouth possibly haven’t seen that one before wow they really wrapped up his mouth around the back of his neck so which leads me to believe that that’s a decent Siz cut wow on that
Lip I mean you’re not kidding that’s a decent wrap wow it almost looks like the top lip I can’t again we’re a little too far away from the action but if it’s the top lift and they were able to is he Brea he’s obviously breathing through his nose whoa that is the top
Lip that they’ve taped what a great job by the actual trainer he’s able to breathe not only out his nose and his mouth but there’s definitely probably a decent Siz Slice on that top Li yeah but he knows one minute hard one minute hard this match can be
Over what a warrior Sierra is though I mean obviously we don’t see the extent of the injury but to be able to say hey tape me up mick you know instead of cut me Mick in the Rocky hey tape me up stop the bleeding we’re at a 1-1 we’re in the
State finals I’m a junior I’m committed to Stanford I want to go out and win this State title here doesn’t get more epic than this here we go minute left and zinin is moving he is in on a shot stuff counted by by Sierra oh on the edge of the map
But we go out of bounds Sierra almost had that but man the pace by zinin here 41 seconds left has been nonstop that breather really helped both [Applause] wrestlers 30 to go in the period Sierra doing a good job holding the center this time and there’s that defense again on that wrist you you see him being able to stop that single leg but in reality zin’s been able to hit a high seat from there and Sierra is in on that single leg and a great job they’re
Going to get the stall call the avoiding of the move yes they are go that was that was that was a good stall call are and that is absolutely done on the coach’s part you saw John look at him and say hey he fled the hold he didn’t
Give him the stall one but he gave him the stall exactly and listen to decide a match right there I don’t think that would make sense but to give a warning it makes complete sense absolutely 100% agree with you Orin and here we go we have overtime in
Our second final at 113 lbs and right back to that overhook wrist that stops that high SE from Zinin front headlock he’s in on the single leg he’s got it shelf we got the wizard defense Sierra putting pressure on that knee he’s got to elevate that here tried to clear that right hand to the backside there Orin he needs to come up to his
Feet and he does and he goes for the head not the smartest thing to do but now he needs to cross face he needs to get his weight back zinin looking to roll through and he does he’s able to pass the ankle of Sierra Sierra sitting
Back with the ankle of zinin now zinin coming up with his own ankle his own scramble High hips is going to win here we got got 15 to go in the period Sierra trying to clear his head on the inside and there’s the stalemate call wow 9
Seconds to go inches from a taked down for either wrestler 9 seconds [Applause] left I think we’re going to be going in double overtime little 3030 action here here we go with the tiebreakers and again this is our first overtime here of the finals they’re going to wrestle the full 30 seconds
Both times both people are going to get the opportunity to wrestle that 30 seconds right now zinin on bottom and look at coach Myers coach Myers is invested here we look over the girls match and he just got a state champ for the girls and now he’s looking
For Sierra to get the double up here Sierra starting off with a tough ride already on zinin zinin able to come up to his feet Sierra looking to return zinin fighting the hands again we got a stall call already remember that and Sierra able to drop down to a
Single leg lock looking to lock up a cradle drives zinin out of bounds 8 seconds left smart ride here by Sierra it puts himself in the driver seat he should be looking to grab himself an ankle stop the first move if he’s able to stop the first
Move we’re going to get a caution on green and you saw that now we seen it he’s going to go pressure forward here he had a little bit of a spiral Sierra’s going to look to get pressure forward with eight seconds left there’s that pressure forward on that
Spiral ride zining quickly up to his feet controlling the two-on-one two seconds to go and a redrop attempt from Sierra and we’re moving on to the second 30 for 30 that was a very smart ride by Sierra he knew he most likely was not going to get a stall call didn’t want to
Do anything crazy just holding on to zinin zinin not too happy with the call but now Sierra gets his own turn on bottom and zin’s going to try to do the same thing he’s going to try to ride him out and another move by Sierra he needs to be very very careful
Here coach Meyer’s not happy saying that Red’s Red’s coming on top with a little uh with his knee and his chest absolutely yeah now looking for a switch coming up to his feet zinin still maintaining a good ride sitting on the ankle Sierra back up to his feet now Sierra kicking
Away and this is what he needs to do here he needs to continue to kick away he’s been warned for stalling once already remember that Orin Z doing a great job getting Sierra back into his grasp getting a leg right in Sierra looking for the roll looking
For the reversal here he needs to think about getting away 5 seconds left and zinin able to ride as well smart ride by zinin here Rock did an amazing job he was down on one ankle he knew he had the stalk call he was trying to climb those
Hips he ultimately left the ankle Dove up to the hips and since he scored first he’s going to get choice and he’s looking and he’s saying down and Coach tier Pell saying hey do you want to ride him can we ride him can we get out what
Did he choose He just flat out said are you sure he chose down I think he chose top and he switched it he chose down coach tier Pell said are you sure he did switch it I’m not sure about that but now here’s first point scored it’s not a
3030 but if Zin can ride him out for 30 seconds he’s going to win a State title Sierra coming up to a Tri OD zinin sitting on the ankle of Sierra remember 20 seconds left he’s got a stall call against him Sierra crashing those hips zinin coming up to the spiral ride he’s
Got 15 seconds 10 seconds left zinin in on the legs driving to the double leg he’s got a tight waist ankle Sierra’s not really getting away here I think zin’s going to do it Sierra up to his feet time runs out he does it he gets the one point he
Gives a big hug for for Coach dear belly your winner and state champion the sophomore at 113 lbs from Buchanan High School Rockland zinin wow what a match ultimate tiebreaker and zinin is able to get it done wow what an amazing match those of you watching on the live stream on nfhs
We just an amazing amazing match that’s a little bit of solidification for Buchanan obviously their run is over they had seven in a row their heads up against Poway they’re going to be able to sleep tonight and Rockin zinin gets his State title as a sophomore ah what a wonderful time those
You on the live feed are official He just flat out took off his wristbands he put him on the center of the mat he put his whistle there there and he’s saying I’m done I’ve retired what a Class Act I’ve never seen that before yeah I never seen that
Before here comes the battle of the Southern section they didn’t get to wrestle last week obviously with the southern section being the two brackets with the blue and the gold both of them won it obviously ronal Ramirez won the gold bracket Kio wins the uh blue
Bracket Kio had a great upset of cantero last week then they wrestled ultimately in that finals last week Kio gets the win and now he’s got Ronnie Ramirez the returning state champ man koreo in the semi-finals looked so impressive and here we go at 120 pounds Ronnie Ramirez out of Walnut taking on
Nathan CIO from St John bosow Ronnie Ramirez the returning state champ he’s a three-time California state fin finalist he took third as a or excuse me took second as a freshman he was the champion last year as a sophomore and now he’s back in the finals here as a
Junior taking on the sophomore Nathan Kio of St John bosow and I’m going to tell you I’m impressed with this sophomore he doesn’t care who he’s wrestling he’s coming after them hard in his semi-final match it was impressive and this is the first of five St John
Bosow finalists yeah and how they kind of sneak under the radar they they’re not getting the team title but man to put five in the finals I mean how impressive and sitting in fourth place right now 12 points behind Gilroy who has three in the finals I don’t know if they’re going to
Catch him or not well I mean obviously if they get five Champions and they can catch him this the third place team title race is still up for grabs here with St John bosow loving the motion here by both guys filling each other out 45 left here in the first
Period little shot attempt there by K and we’ll see if we can see a leg attack here in the last 15 seconds by either wrestler Ramirez looking at the clock a few times we’ll go scoreless into the second period choice will go to Ramirez and he’ll choose the bottom position to
Start off the second period Tough ride here by CIO out of St John bosow ramire is able to come up to his feet a great defense there by um ultimately CIO he had his that leg way up high was able to get it a pants on position and was able to ultimately get away from that shot
Attempt Ronnie Ramirez in that aspect not necessarily Creo my Apologies and we’ll see if we can get a little more action here on our feet feeling each other out shot attempt by Ramirez fended off by Kio there and I like the movement there by both wrestlers you know sometimes obviously as announcers we we get into the fandom
And we’re just kind of like watching yeah sometimes I forget to call call the match myself brother you know cio’s had a phenomenal year coming on you know he he went out there and he took fourth at the doc B he was up at to and took second he was in
The finals there at Toc up in Reno and for the last 68 weeks has just been on a mission took out the two-time defending State finalist in Cano and a nice little slide by it t and a great taked down by Ramirez we’re going to get a technical
Violation on CIO for fleeing the mat but no taked down I got to say the slickness there from Ramirez was impressive I uh it should be 20-0 should be two green again we’re got a technical violation on CIO for fleeing the hold no taked down his toes were out of bounds Ronnie Ramirez
[Applause] was and now now koreo knows he needs to step it up trailing by two he’ll have his chance on bottom in the third but that means he’ll be trailing by one it won’t be tied up so he’s going to keep the pressure on he’s going to keep his butt in the
Center and you see it there’s no shock value for Caro you know he’s in the state finals he’s wrestling the returning state champ and he’s able to be able to push inside and slip level change there Kio looks very poised for a sophomore here out of the Southern
Section yeah it looks like he’s in the practice room and a a lot of wrestlers aren’t able to transition over from the practice room to the to the wrestling man especially under these kinds of lights but koreo already looking tough gets up to his feet Ramirez letting him
Go so now CIO trailing by one you know their last match was 3-2 obviously up at uh at Reno to with Ramirez being the Victor there look at that little slide attempt and he does a modified slide he’s a uh ultimately instead of a true elbow pass
Slide he’ll give that old bump of the elbow and push it off Korea looking up at the clock minute and a half left he’s trailing by one both wrestlers turning it on getting a little more chippy in the hand fight very similar to a lot of the
Semi-finals that I’ve seen I mean very very closely contested matches one two-point matches you know when we get to this level it was amazing to watch the semis and to see where the seeds come true huge shout out out to the seating commission you know obviously you’re looking at Todd Tom Zack you’re
Looking at Nick Kindred you’re looking at Michael Cho Michael Cho does an amazing job here with the boys all year long and to watch those semifinals and to see the seeds ultimately they were the top four seeds in like 12 of the 14 weight classes 10 to 12 of the weight
Classes top four seeds in the semis top two seeds in the finals Michael Cho you’re a wizard my man he knows what he’s talking about crunches a lot of numbers really biased rankings 23 seconds left here Ramirez still with the lead looking for his own offense Kio
Going to be trying to steal this match here in the last 15 seconds but Ramirez with a slide by able to get behind still no Tak down still no Tak down and there’s the two takedown for Ronnie Ramirez with eight seconds to go and he solidifies it Ronnie
Ramirez as the time ticks off the clock he’s your state champion two time state champion out of Walnut at 120 lbs ice in his veins two-time California state champion your winner here at 120 lbs as he points to his family from Walnut High School Ronnie [Applause] Ramirez highly contested match right
There and the throw Ramirez throwing his coach you guys didn’t get to see that on the live stream but love it Ramirez did the old viral video and came up to hug his coach and he L drops him to the back excellent technique on that throw as [Applause] well wow so far so
Good here comes Lopez zinin another zinin cousins you know obviously four miles apart on the uh at the schools one at Clovis ones at [Applause] Buchanan and a little bit of a clovis battle [Applause] here this is going to be the third meeting again we’ll talk about it once we go
Live we’re live on the live stream nfhs but when we clip it with the uh when the whistle blows yes sir and those are IES will be on Flow wrestling here we go 126 lbs Battle of the Fresno kids in reality Clovis from Clovis West we’re looking at our four seed Jeff
Lopez his opponent the two seed nade zinin and niade zinin had a battle in the semi-final against pow Billy Townson I was very impressed didn’t know who was going to come out with the victory but n zinc pulled it off and here he goes in the finals Junior from
Clovis again this is the third time that they’ve wrestled and zinin won both matches he’s in on a high crotch and now he’s in on a single leg trying to elevate that bringing it up to his feet and a back trip he’s got to clear that left hand a good wizard defense here
For trying to get that legan zincing is oh he’s got that in now and there’s a taked down we getting back points here we’re getting he got one swipe he was kind of cut off in a little bit of a precarious position had that half took him to his back he got one
Swipe but Lopez was able to come back down and now you can see zinin with the leg right in had the ankle I’m wondering I know in college they start counting once you grab the ankle I wonder when that’s going to transfer over to high school cuz you can see some of these
Wrestlers they’re continuously holding on to the ankle really trapping that bottom wrestler you know that’s a great addition at the college level you know with a couple of the rule changes here uh I think that would come very easily at the high school level you know some
Of obviously the riding time uh some of the back exposure points um with the time ride being able to get neutral exposure not sure that’s going to come down to that High School level just yet but I could easily see that holding on to a single leg 5 seconds in any
Position to get the stall call now Brian what about that three-point takedown huh you think that’s coming to high school anytime soon the only you got to pair it with a four-point nearfall though yes uh there is no way in my humble honest opinion that you’re going to get a
Three-point takedown and ultimately our job as wrestlers is to expose the back and to get a fall and if you’re saying a takedown is equivalent to a back exposure for 5 seconds I I they they have to be paired in my humble honest opinion no that’s I think you’re correct
I think that those adjustments would have to be made not sure where that at with the high school level rules committees across the country but very interesting to see that on the college level and if it stays these wrestlers are going to have to make those
Adjustments once they uh step up to the next level now Lopez starting here on the bottom in the second period trailing by two zinin with a tough tough right on top those Clovis wrestlers always always very tough Riders and watching zinin for the last couple years he’s got many options
From that position he runs not only a spiral half he runs that double thigh pry he’ll also switch off to a little bit of a spiral claw and now he’s got the tight waist half I always get worried when I watch the the half wrist because always that
Could easily turn into a Full Nelson and you’re getting penalized the point but just great control here by zinin minute 13 left here in the second period and still riding Lopez hard Lopez almost looking that was that short sit position almost in reality like a crab ride zinin
Was able to pull that tight waist and that half Lopez was get trying to go head hunting and zinin was able to pull that hip down and get him back to his [Applause] base Lopez really trying to get up to his feet trying to get up to his tripod
Position but the forward pressure by zinin is just too much now with the half here he’s going to try to lift and return and he did it he ultimately has that tight waist half my apologies he had a wrist in a half as they elevated it he was looking for those back
Exposure from that neutral position really obviously he’s in the top position but I’m meaning standing from their feet and Man twice now he’s almost had Lopez in trouble but hasn’t been able to fully punch that hand to the mat get Lopez on his back for a count but dominance here on top 2
Minutes of riding time I’d say if we were in college 10 seconds left here in the second period and zinin really just riding tough on top both these guys obviously only a junior none of them have committed to a college yet but if you’re talking riding time already Orin and there’s that grany
Attempt and zinin still very very tight looks at the clock sees he’s got 4 seconds going to ride him out for the period and now he’s going to St out in the down position to start the third and if I’m Lopez I’m not even trying to wrestle on
Top here I want two minutes I need to get I think two takedowns and unless you you really feel like you can turn him which maybe Lopez feels like he can you know and it’s that old concept all right we’re going to give you a minute as a coach we’ll give
You a minute to ultimately try to turn him and at that minute Mark maybe 110 now we’re going to go takedowns now we got to get two see after all the wrestling I’ve watched I just I recommend let him up on his feet give me a full two minutes to
Get all my takedowns he hasn’t been able to get a takedown yet this match he hasn’t been able to get a score yet and zin’s going to be happy just looking like he’s trying to get away and here we go Lopez now cutting him zinin
Going up 3 nothing a minute 15 left here in the match and Lopez going to be getting to work and there’s that thought by Lopez hey I got 45 seconds I tried to turn him I couldn’t turn him now I got to get on my feet and now I got to get
Two quick takedowns we got a minute to go here in the third a 3-0 lead for ni zinin and zinin really just going to be playing defense Here he’s not going to be backing up and fully stalling he’s smart but he doesn’t have a small stall call against him at all so 40 seconds left there’s the shot attemp smart yeah Lopez needs to be the aggressor he’s got his hands locked on a single
Leg they’re towards the edge of the cylinder and there’s that wizard position and again zinin not playing The Edge he’s not sitting on his lead here by any means he’s got a three-point lead he’s able to cross on over he’s staying Square 15 to go now he drops down to the
Single leg he can kind of sit there there’s no stall call zingin in the driver seat here he knows he’s got this match locked up and there’s that scramble out of bounds and he’s got six seconds got yeah Lopez needs a miracle here but look at his face he’s intense
He’s not backing up he’s in on a shot right away way to finish it off nade your champion at 126 lbs from Clovis High School niade zinin ladies here we go at 132 PBS Elias naita taking on Jesse grea naita Poway gr St John bosow gra freshman out
Of St John bosow and I am thoroughly impressed with the way this kid [Applause] wrestles naita senior punching his ticket to the state finals for Poway one of seven finalists he’s a two-time California state place winner couple years ago go he was able to take Sixth and now he’s here in the state
Finals as a senior over under position here for both wrestlers coming out grea with the underhook slide by attemp by greda naita almost countered on top of that now naita keeping the center of the mat senior versus freshman shot attempt by naita counter by grea graa really trying that slide by
But not fully able to get around Nita was he ultimately saw it coming you saw him be able to dip his head out of it and keep his chin Square not to give up that slide by underhook here by naid you saw him take a peek at the clock saw he got 30
30 seconds to go they’re in an over under tie here and I do like how these wrestlers are taking a look at the clock they’re not looking at the clock oh I’m tired I need this match to be over is it almost done they’re looking at the clock how
Much time do I have what do I need to do they’re being strategic it’s that wrestling matad IQ here at 3 seconds to go can gr get the taked down he’s got a saddle ride and time Runs Out wow offense in the last five seconds we’re we’re seeing that a lot
More often on the single leg double leg instead of being able to lock the hands behind those legs they’re coming up to that saddle ride what I mean by that saddle ride is that hands coming across the lower part of the back to the far hip we saw that there unfortunately the
Time was running out and now gr gets his chance to be on top naita coming right up to his feet grea lets him go so first point on the board will go to naita out of Powe gr with the little elbow pass sweet little duck gr got the single leg off
The duck and a nice little underneath roll from naita graa still hasn’t got control gots to take him down to the mat naid doing a great job fighting hands here trying not to give up the taked down he’s going to have to be really slick oh and it looked like an
Illegal move by grea possibly coming with uh both feet up you’re looking at coach Myers talking to the assistant I’m I’m sure we’re going to get a challenge to that here at the whistle it looked like both feet were there on that cut back yeah yeah definitely
Were and listen that was a slick move by grea but I don’t think that’s allowed it’s illegal and as soon as they get a fresh as soon as they get a whistle here coach Myers is going to argue that call and rightfully so but now Escape here for
Naita knots everything up at 2 40 seconds left here in the second period camera kind of incured by the official and here’s the whistle here’s coach Myers and he’s going to talk to the assistant about that illegal you cannot leave your feet on both legs on that cut back on that suckback he’s
Talking to the assistant and it was clear clear as day I totally agree let’s see if he’s going to change the call here he’s going to call it correct correct that is a phenomenal job at all three levels that’s a phenomenal job by the whistle official to be able to let
Action continue you saw coach Meers challenge that and when he challenged that he said the assistant and the assistant stepped in and said yes he totally agrees it is an illegal move they’re going to take the takedown off the board yeah right take down off the
Board and the Escape for uh naita should come off technically too take down and Escape but then naid should keep that point because it’s a it’s a illegal move Point 100% so it should be two to zero naita again totally agreed should be 2-0 great call Orin to be able to talk
About that escape point I love when the system works the whistle got the call wrong coach Myers jumps up and says that’s illegal he talked to the assistant and right now gr is in on a double leg and gets his own big taked down wow that was incredible running his feet right across
The mat taking naita down brings the match back to two to2 naita right up to his feet though 54 seconds left here in the second G will just let him go graa said quit talking about the illegal call I’m just going to go out and get a
Double leg tie it up let me wrestle and now we’re back to 3-2 lead for naita you know we were talking about the wrestling IQ and that’s that whole system working again I’m back to that call I thought it was a great job by coach Myers to keep it is cool ask the
Assistant they get the point change the wrestlers agreed you saw Valencia the coach for St John bosow not argue it and grea gets the takedown right away I feel like it was great decorn by the officials and the the coaches so now 13 seconds left here in the second
Period gr ha looking over at the clock and I think we’re going to finish this one out with naita leading by one 3 seconds to go I don’t know if we see that Blast upate from Nita or gr excuse me we move to the third 3-2 lead for naita oh they’re
Talking about it he might want to go up on his feet it’s not a bad idea pwe’s dominant on top lately that’s what they’re known for they’re really good on top and grea looks great on his feet but Nita’s been no slouch she’s only giv up one taked
Down yeah but Gad has been the aggressor for sure he obviously got that blast double got the taked down in the second period feels very comfortable on his feet and we get a stalemate quickly it’s going to be a long two minutes for naita here as gread is coming for a full two
Minutes shot attempt by naita Slide by by graa he’s looking to spin behind here he gets behind needs to bring the Vita down he does on the edge of the mat definitely could have been a toe out but he uh he kept his toes in he kept
His knees in that was a Tak down by grea great job by the Freshman he had one knee one toe in for sure and then ultimately fell out of bounds a great taked down for grea now that’s two that’s a good choice there in the
Third to be able to go neutral there he lets him go he’s gotten the two takedowns 115 to go we’re all knotted at four naita coming into his underhook on the right side that downward pressure it’s not a front headlock he’s really in an underhook but it’s really that pressure over a front
Headlock and graa did a great job there controlling the the right elbow of naita making sure he couldn’t create any offense from there little Super Duck attempt he was way out gr was but that that just shows the motion being able to hey put that in the
Back of your mind I got a Super Duck coming too look the elbow passed by for GR now he’s on a single leg towards the edge of the cylinder fought off really well here by naita naita looking for that ankle oh and graa tried to throw
That by but naita able to get his right leg out o hits his knee but right leg out to the to the floor there you can see it here here at our vantage point the sweat on that corner of the mat navid’s leg kind of slid out onto the
Actual Arena floor they’re going to knock give that Tak down they’re going to go back in that neutral position with 17 seconds to go in the period takedown could decide this one in short time we have just under 10 seconds left here till we go to overtime I think both resters complacent
Give themselves a minute to score a taked down we’re headed to overtime here we go another overtime match here to 132 pounds navita driving the underhook driving grea all the way off the mat coach Myers wants the stall call for going off the mat yeah I don’t know if I
Give it there obviously but Gras had the takedowns oh now he took a little bit of a shot got crashed by naita naita trying to hop around here in overtime and got a body lock from graa and a wizard position from naita [Applause] gr trying to shelf that ankle come up
He’s got to be able to reach that backside ankle or the hip was almost able to reach it he’s trying to pull on that ankle 30 seconds left here in overtime graa slowly pulling in naita trying to finish this takedown on the edge of the mat he’s able to secure the
Far hit naita goes to roll and scramble he turns in coming up on his own offense here is na great defense for Nita can he get his hips High can he get the two and now we’re in the opposite position with the gator roll still no control [Applause]
Here waiting on the official still no control from the official and there’s the two take down with two seconds left naita gets it done in overtime right at the end pawe gets their Champion your champion at 132 lbs from Poway High School the five seed Elias na [Applause] wow what an incredible
Match that’s scramble position graa had him he’s pulling the ankle on naita goes into that Gator Roll gets that North and South position and then ultimately gr gets back up on top and naita scrambles back out of it secures the two takedown and he gets an overtime winner to get
His State title incredible by the senior out of P away their first day title of the night and not from one of their top rank wrestlers but what’s the old phrase you know if you’re going to win a team title you got to have a champion to solidify
That you know many people talk about that well all the way from coach Brader now back down to coach Meyers they got their state champ this year Orin wow absolutely incredible finish there which moves us up into another paway zapa versus Kelly oh this one’s going to
Be a good one folks I am excited for this one here we go one versus two at 138 pounds Daniels AA out of Gilroy High School in the red ankle band Paul Kelly from Powe in the green z a returning state champion last year at 132 lbs Paul Kelly took
Third both D1 commits yes sir Paul Kelly St local here got to wrestle at Cal Baptist in the Big 12 Coach Derek more stud stud one word such an such an amazing human being zapa headed over to the ACC with Coach Pat Papio at at NC
State and now he’s in on a i he almost h a high se but zapa’s got that wizard position tough wizard right there for zapa and he’s above the joint of the elbow if Kelly can get his arm out he’ll be in a great position to score zapa looks to
Roll has a hold of the ankle non great position oh but now zapa gets his hips up an ankle each and Paul Kelly could be in trouble here if zapa could take take advantage put him on his back zapa’s now got a wizard and an ankle he’s got that body
Well I thought Kelly had the body lock but he didn’t and now they’re a little bit north and south on their feet and they survived the scramble both wrestlers on action no points see that’s the fun of high school wrestling that I like you know that the college level
With that neutral danger now zapa was in trouble there hits a dive roll out of left field and is able to not give up the Tak down and live to fight another day in the neutral position yeah I I can see that rule not coming over to the high school level let
Them scramble give them the freedom to do that college level it’s a bit higher level obviously they have a bit more pressure but 18 seconds left here in the first period we’re still scoreless Paul Kelly doing a great job controlling the elbow of zapa as he forces the underhook there on the right
Side and I’m going to tell you last year I was so impressed with zpa the way he wrestled to me he was the most dominant wrestler last year at the state tournament and I’m own pressed right now with Paul Kelly holding his Zone you know he he really ultimately took it out
Even after the season going out to that who’s number one yep beating none other than Bo Basset it’s difficult to match the energy of Bo Basset and zapa absolutely matched the energy of Bo Basset in that match I was impressed I was very impressed California represented well at
That who’s number one and Zeda was up at 50s for most of the year and he come down two-way class is here to 38 and great ride here by Kelly on top able to move side to side zapa able to get up to his feet now
Though Kelly got a little bit High there zapa trying to get that foot back down to the mat and we’re out of bounds Mr Valdez on the Whistle the officials have done a great job all all weekend long you know it’s a long three-day tournament
I mean they’re out here on the mat for 12 hours it is not easy and there he goes AA able to get away now minute 30 left here in the second shot there by zapa Paul Kelly trying to just get behind zapa working his way up he stepped over that leg he’s
Got to clear his right hand around the body and as soon as he does that he crashes the hips and he’s getting a take down and getting some swipes only a one count there on the nearfall so we got the two take down down he takes a 3-0
Lead good technique froma stepped over crashed with the hips put Kelly to his back gets the Tak down and now he’s got a three- Z lead halfway through this second period And I love the way Kelly wrestles as well almost like he’s wrestling angry with aggression so Furious a lot a lot
Of speed a lot of quickness there trying to match the sauciness let’s say of Daniel zapa it’s only a junior I was impressed with with Kelly on the national level being able to watch those Hall of Fame dels and he was 5-0 out there unreal doing something like that against a
Level of competition I just absolutely love those Hall of Fame Del out there in Oklahoma like showcase the top talents and now we’re here at top talents here in California Daniel Sepeda with a 30-0 lead over Paul Kelly currently on a single leg got to be able to climb the hips and he
Does AA controlling on top now puts in a bar on the left side bar half zapa looking to run the [Applause] bar staying active on top though you saw him switch from the half to the wrist back to the half and now he’s trying to run that half and listen that’s
Something that I recommend oh but short time left not only you showing the official that you’re staying active you’re you’re get given that thought in that bottom wrestler’s mind of hey is he going to go to the wrist is he going to go to the half and you saw it there he switched
Back off to the half hopped his hips over tried to run it time runs out and now he’s got a three- Z lead moving on to the third Kelly will start off on the bottom here trailing by three looking for a roll almost a reversal here AA going to
Counter deep wizard trying to control that back angle gets underneath that heel elevating it he’s still in control and now he’s getting back points with that Turk he’s got two and there’s two nearfall for zapa and so they didn’t give Kelly a reversal there right not at all it was
It was a bit quick now again with that bar half and listen for me I like keeping the bar staying on the bar side running the half zapa’s got three options from here sometimes he’ll step in with his right leg he’ll leg in and run that half
Now he’s just ultimately hop siding from the wing and the half one 15 to go minute minute 10 here excuse me minute three you see that pressure forward with zapa on that Wing putting tons of pressure on that shoulder surpris Z doesn’t jump into a cradle
Here Paul Kelly able to come up to his feet and stay there but Zeda doing a great job bringing him back down to the map 44 seconds left here in the match 45 to go and zapa just full control here K PE out he peaked out and got the
Two zapa lost the wing on the near Side Kelly was able to pop his head out he gets the two reversal and listen 18 seconds left zapa up by three and Escape here puts him up by four 10 seconds to go in the period Daniel zpa trying to become a two-time
California state champion he’s in on a shot trying to get his high hips he’s got 3 seconds to go and that’s going to do it you’re winner at 138 lbs the number one ranked wrestler in the state of California and now two-time California state champ from Gilroy High School Daniel
Sepa there’s just no break yeah you know out here thank you so much for watching on nfhs network it’s so difficult to to win a State title and for AA to win back to back he was at 50s all year long dropped the 38s really his natural weight well
Not natural the weight that he thought that the team thought he would be slotted [Applause] in impressive by both wrestlers there 100% [Applause] they’re going to be wrestling a lot obviously at the next level Paul Kelly is an amazing competitor himself the improvements he’s made throughout his career have been very
Impressive tier Pell just kind of looked over just kind of looking at the crowd he looked at the clock behind him he wanted to see where he was at the crowd kind of looked over to both of us and we got the other old eye contact and that
Head nod you know what us guys do you look and you’re just like what’s up like like the old head nod it’s been so fun to to to be around these guys you know being able to do zinin being able to do doc B being able
To see these guys and to be able to call a lot of their dusel you know being able to call Buchanan Clovis the last couple years and Canon Poway it’s been a fun ride on my part and being able to get to know these coaches has been great and
These amazing matchups that they’re setting up but here we go at 144 lbs we have Joseph Tuscano sophomore out of Buchanan in the red ankle bands he’s taking on Moses mirbel the senior out of Gilroy in the green and already Tuscano putting the pressure on keeping center of the
Mat back-to- back trips to the final here for uh Joseph Tuscano last year he took second place Mirabel took fifth last year Mirabel going to go out into that tough eiwa conference he’s going to wrestle at Brown Tano only a [Applause] sophomore there’s that hand fight whether it’s up
On the shoulders whether it’s down on the wrist I still consider all of that hand fighting being able to push pull slide Tuscano does it with the best of Them G has had a tough day you know their semis obviously both Cortez Brothers go down but Mirabel being able to get through he’s here in the finals he’s wrestling tus scano right back to those heavy hands that we’re talking about yeah and really just first minute and a half both
Wrestlers just feeling each other out taking their time looking for an opening 15 to go in the period TC doing a great job Holding Center and there’s that Circle by Mirabel again you don’t want to ever play The Edge and those are what the officials are looking
At they’re looking to be able to play that edge and in that case to give that stall call Moses Mirabel did a great job there being able to Circle his hips back in I got to say the officials have been doing a great job not you know throwing
Themselves into the match trying to be part of it just making the right calls is that the announcer Jinx oh jeez oh shouldn’t have said that I guess don’t blame me folks if we get some some bad calls here but well we got edigar Carrasco here on the whistle his
Assistant Sergio Cortez he actually got the uh golden whistle award here before two good officials yeah these guys got a lot of mat time Tuscano here starting on bottom and mirbel with a tough ride so far but Tuscano able to get up to his tripod and knee slide that’s that knee
Slide change Rover not a short H change overover and he hit by over does he get the two ooh almost locking up the out of bounds he’s going to give the one absolutely lost of control and a good job by the official there you know we talked about it he
Waited he waited not to give the two reversal he gets the Escape there was definitely loss of control there at the edge of the cylinder and a one- zero lead for Joseph Tuscano and we’ll see here if now a minute 15 left here in the second we can get some
Action here in our feet leg attacks wrestlers spent the entire first period feeling each other out shallow shot attempt there by Tuscano and here we go shot by mirbel he gets in on a single leg on the edge of the mat so Tuscano able to fight it with the tough ankle
Wizard it’s so funny everybody’s got different names you know I call it a shin wizard you call an ankor ankle wizer but look at the pressure on the shoulder it’s not allowing Mirabel to be able to clear that right hand to come up on the hip oh
A nice little shoulder bump but when you do that shoulder bump that gives that space Tuscano took advantage of it and pulled his leg right out great wrestling there by the sophomore out of Buchanan not giving up any points 15 seconds left here in the second he really has been impressive for
The last couple years obviously taken second last year but I watched those Hall of Fame Duss we talked about it in the last match and he was also 5 and0 out those Hall of Fame Duss he’s wrestling Elite wrestlers across the country going five and0 in those big
Duels that is no joke that is some serious [Applause] competition and here mirbel will get choice in the third he’ll choose bottom there’s that change over you know he starts on the near side being able to hit that spiral half on the far side and now we’re on a crab
Ride risky here by Tuscano almost looking to get nearfall there though but he was very comfortable you saw mirbel trying to be able to keep that ankle he almost trapped himself in but tuso was able to kit that three quarter really a reverse first three quarter in that
Headlock and as soon as he went head hunting he tried to get some back points here just needs to be careful not to lock his hands he’s still on top you’re also hearing Tuscano’s in the top position here so if there’s any sort of back exposure on like a
Roll Tuscano’s got to climb that hip he’s still on the end now he CL up that follow great follow by the sophomore so far a minute on top Tuscano sticking in the leg right here pulling him back looking for some nearfall and there’s that same position that I talked about mirbel trapping
Himself in with that leg trying to clear his hips up on top little bit better position here because tono doesn’t have that headlock again now ton reached down to grabed his own ankle to lock himself in and we’re out of bounds good technique for Tuscano his hips had slued off he
Grabbed his own ankle he pulled it in around that body lock was able to climb up his hips to not give up the Escape or reversal we’re getting blood time on Tuscano nope miror Bell scano looked like he kind of needed that breather got coach Daniel Cormier of Gilroy wrestling and UFC
Legend he’s got a big Legend with him too you know that coaching staff at Gilroy’s just gotten better absolutely you know I mean I looked over earlier in the day and I see Jerry abbis sitting right next to DC the wealth of talent Jerry abis is my college coach as well the
Knowledge little Cal State Bakersfield shout out right there absolutely Jerry is one of the best technicians I’ve ever been around his son jayen AB is currently at Stanford Troy T probably’s no slouch in the other in the other corner right back to that same position
We’ve been in 30 seconds to go here in the period desano has it locked up he’s got his left leg in but he’s really high mirbel trying to come out the backside here desano got both boots in oh and reversal here for mirbel he takes a lead one-point lead Tuscano
Needs to get away 15 seconds to go Tuscano looks at the clock sees he’s got under 10 he only needs one 5 Seconds to go oh and I’m surprised that wasn’t a locking hands call as he brought him back down to the map 5 seconds left tier Pell is going to
Have the official talk to the assistant he’s asking for it oh they’re not doing it did I jinx it no not at all 5 Seconds to go and there’s the caution on red well I think the officials should discuss it obviously Tuscano is very flustered
Here we got 5 Seconds To Go the stall the Call’s going to stand yeah he’s got 5 Seconds to get away and there’s his second caution the next one’s going to cost him a point [Applause] the sophomore out of Buchanan needs to compose himself here you can get an
Escape in 5 seconds mirbel needs to be smart though needs to drop down to an ankle Tano trying to go head hunting time’s getting close on him and there it’s going to do it your champion at 144 lbs the number two seed in senior at of Gilroy High School Moses Mirabel
Wow the reversal does [Applause] it Tuscano was great on top but Miro took advantage when he needed [Applause] to that scramble you know you obviously get the reversal But ultimately as tanos coming out of bounds we’re going to have to go obviously back that’s my number
One thing I’m going to go back I I just put it in my notes to go back and look at 144 lbs to see if that was a locking hands and so listen now I’m starting to think that possibly as they’re going out of bounds so they’re he’s not bringing
Them down to the mat in bounds it’s out of bounds probably not a locking hands call is is what I’m thinking because they were going out of bounds from the referees but yeah I’m I’m going back on Flow wrestling to watch that 144b match again where whether his hands were on
The mat we don’t have that replay ability here but the referee did not ask the assistant he was very confident in his call saying hey no there was no lock in hands now listen if that was me I think those referees should have talked about
It at least give the give the coach and the wrestler that kind of respect but they saw what they saw oh and here’s a good one this this was the weight class to watch this weekend my friends get ready and here we go at 150 lbs we have Brock
Manona out of Palm Desert already in on a shot taking on L root from Powe both seniors manona ranked first in the state root ranked third Brock manona is a very funky wrestler he can score from any POS position look at this he’s got the scrambles he’s in on a single leg now
Off of that transition route towards the edge of the cylinder keeping that whizzard and a great little Crackdown from manona and he’s trying to get a cradle locked up I can’t see if his hands are locked it’s not now he still drops back down to that single leg lar
Root and a great split defense lar root doing a great job not giving anything up here fighting the lock here manona on the edge of the map manona looking for a trip and rude a able to get his leg down great job defending that shot weathering the storm he changed the pressure he
Took the pressure back into manona with his foot and then immediately brought it back got that separation and gets himself out of that danger Roots match you know a a return of the of last your state finals in the semis against Miguel Estrada went to over time again and I beautiful double
Leg blast double from root take down that’s what wanted for him against Estrada was that same explosive double legegg and it’s the level change as well and I’m telling you manon’s got to protect his legs he is an Allstar wrestler but when he doesn’t protect his
Legs he puts himself in danger you know you mentioned that in that pre- little match but here he is from the bottom scoring for any position he is a very flexible funky wrestler from any position and he knocks it up at two with that beautiful Hip Heist [Applause]
Reversal l r not too happy with manona trapping his leg back there yeah but you saw it he really wasn’t trapped Not only was it first in the late turk it wasn’t pressed up against his body you know there’s been a lot of talk lately on flow of the toughest weight
Class in the nation well as a California of course we’re biased but this is an amazing weight class absolutely and listen zapa going down to 38s made it a little less tough but the top four here all nationally ranked roll their attempt by root and there’s that potentially
Dangerous with the knee coach Meyers not happy but understands it it’s the referee’s position to protect the wrestlers you know back back to this division you know manona going to Michigan in Big 10 lar root going to the ACC in North Carolina Miguel Estrada lost in the semi-finals
Too and Iowa commit and then you looked at the four seed Pargo in this W class going to Stanford again Brock Monona is a three time California finalist he took first as a sophomore he took second last year as a junior and now he’s in danger getting getting a
Taked down against him but he fights that off and he gets a single leg towards the edge of the boundary pulls that single leg in he gets it elevated and root fighting those hands again manona really losing his left hand on the leg root able to get his leg
Down got to keep those hands locked folks and root in another shot going for a high crotch here Crackdown position manona trying to sneak behind if he can root needs to keep his hips down and his head up needs to try to duck that leg if he can you know when they wrestled
Earlier in the year in Doc beat root was in on a shot mononi hit that little bit of a funk roll was able to catch root on his back and get the fall in Doc B we kind of saw that earlier route level change gets the double leg and then
Immediately the big old Hip Heist from manona to be able to get the reversal and now he’s got a 3-2 lead little patty cake there from root you know maton is very comfortable when kids get in on his legs you’re talking about that transition to the
Next level he’s got to be able to change that when we get when he gets to college but here he’s almost not necessarily baiting root but as we say it root gets in on that shot controlling those legs he’s got his head but there’s the funk
Of manona he sees that Gator Roll he looked at the clock side he’s got 10 seconds and he’s look at his face he is not worried about that position whatsoever the best thing root can do here on his feet is get two legs at once
If he can get in on a solid double leg he will most likely finish on manona anything with any individual leg and mantanona is in the driver seat there so two minutes left root chooses the bottom position he’s trailing by one and rot able to tie it up the three
Getting up to his feet both wrestlers just staying Square waiting for the reaction of the other wrestler Root’s been able to level change and get in on the legs of manona multiple times and there’s that level change and a nice counter defense for manam Nona he’s got that single leg
Elevated standing straight tall looking for that back trip bringing that toe from the calf down to that ankle the flexibility of root yeah I think his leg is six feet up in the air right now Monona putting great pressure on that Shin split series defense from root montona bringing him back in elevating
It and a great job look at root control that wrist great movement there by mantanona minute left here still knotted up at three manona trying to finish the single leg rout trying to counter puts him in trouble manona able to secure the taked down goes up by two now rot went
For a cut back and as he hit the cut back his hip hits the mat and ultimately Monon gets on top and gets that taked down to go up 53 with 47 seconds to go in the period and what’s cool in manon’s corner he’s got both of his brothers rooting him [Applause]
On I’m sure dad’s KN not too far down that Tunnel right there absolutely one point Escape now we’re in a five4 match Here oh nice oh Magic Stick by root so the magic stick comes out that was beautiful that was beautiful he didn’t get it but that was beautiful wow the level change for manona and root hits a magic stick out of bounds to be able to secure himself from not getting taken down himself
Yeah and there’s call wow again a great call by the official manona not only dropped to his knees he slid himself out of bounds to avoid the attack of root he’s got 10 seconds to go he’s backing up again root putting on the pressure 4
Seconds left not sure if he can do it they go out of bounds two seconds to go ah might be too little too late here but he’s still still got to go forward he has to go forward and that’s going to do it your winner and two-time California state
Champion at 150 lbs the senior from Palm Desert High School to Michigan commit Brock Monona wow wow and impressive wrestling by both wrestlers very impressed with root the way he battled out there losing by one offense at the end there’s the family hug the two brothers dad
Anthony and they’re going to stay in the seat they’re going to stay in the seat cuz here comes Barbosa well we’re halfway through by bu wow has been flying by folks again huge shout out to Candy Productions and nfhs network for allowing you and I to be able to call
This the last three years together it’s so fun to be able to you know I know we talk on a daily basis well I mean really a weekly basis we’ve done a few podcasts along the way but it’s just so fun uh it was great time to be able to talk about
The pre-state matchup on the podcast but to be able to be out here and watch these wrestlers it’s just truly truly such a blessing and an honor to sit mat side the last couple years with you Orin and man these guys are putting it all on
The line I mean it’s this is everything to them they they have their chance at a State title it is hard to come by nothing is promised and this one’s going to be fun and and here we go at 157 lbs Gregor choian out of St John
Bosow taking on Andrew Barbosa out of Palm Desert both seniors both division one commits Chan’s going to stay out here on the West Coast and go to Stanford meanwhile Barbosa is going to head out to the Big 10 country wrestle at Ruckers and Barbosa currently one and0 against chellan
Gor is a three-time California place winner his sophomore year he took fifth last year as a junior took fourth and now he’s in the state finals Barbosa took sixth place last year barbos has had a great story you know as I say that he’s in on a single
Leg from the high crotch grigor fights that off does a great job a quick adjustment here from Barbosa Barbosa’s finally healthy you know he’s had a long road to get here this year is a senior year he’s opened up eyes and a lot of people have seen it
In the southern section but he’s healthy and now he’s the number one ranked kid in the state he’s beat Gregor before seven to2 at Doc B yep very decisive I think our buddy uh Brian uh Bautista coach at Frontier was on that call on the mat if I’m not mistaken we’ll have to
Ask him later the the creator of uh Simple Man wrestling podcast shout out to Brian good level change from Barbosa and a nice little head whip from Chelan showing some freestyle there he did he took that forearm he put it on the side of the at the headgear flipped it almost
Like a head and arm without an arm and he clears that leg and doesn’t give up the taked down smart wrestling there by the senior out of St John bosow one of five in the finals for them [Applause] wow so Barosa will start here on the bottom in the second period
You know Gregor’s got that freestyle background as well you know he was in the finals out there at that Junior National freestyle tournament and now he’s in the top position here in the California state finals currently the number two Seed we get a fresh start a lot of these matches have been heavily contested very close matches a lot of the seeds have been true too you know the ones and twos here we have it at this weight class at 157 PBS we get one point Escape for
Barbosa you know I remember a couple years ago they weren’t allow stickers on headgear and I AB I absolutely love what they’ve done and and they whether they changed that rule or allowed it these kids are so excited to move their education and their wrestling up to that
Next level we sit here and we look at Gregor trock and’s headgear and he’s got that Stanford Cardinal that’s a big deal it really is it’s it’s the pleasure of of wanting to show where you’re going to school and listen little kids are sitting at home or sitting here in the
Stands looking at that saying that’s what I want to do I want to be in the state finals I want to go to Stanford and wrestle absolutely you know Barbosa going out to ruter he’s heading all the way out to that East Coast Big 10 had a great conversation with his dad
In the hotel yesterday just very much appreciated of his son and his Focus this year again he’s kind of had a little bit of a road obviously Co plays a a factor in that losing that year but um you know a couple injuries along the way and he’s finally recovered and he’s
Healthy and it is shown this year absolutely coming in as a first ranked wrestler here last week he got thrown to his back by uh Leon of Roosevelt uh and being able to be down and he came back and he won that match 10 to S wow like just
Okay I got thrown to my back I got off my back and it was close I mean he was close to being pinned and he battled through that adversity and I remember watching that and as he got off the batch and he got that 10-7 Victory and
He just had this sense of focus of like no matter what adversity is going to happen I’m going to work through it he’s obviously done that and now we’re here in the state finals and he’s got a one- Zer lead on Gregor chlock great Matt return there big Matt
Return and listen resilience is a huge thing in wrestling you got to be resilient G is in great position here sorry to cut you off oron I thought I thought he was going to be able to pick that ankle and put Barbosa to his back he settles for the
One-point escape and we’re tied at one with 130 to go in the third [Applause] period again didn’t mean to cut you off oh no of course not no resilience is uh as you were talking about Barosa I just kept thinking resilience is a big thing in wrestling no matter how far you’re
Down 14 to zero it doesn’t matter you still have a chance to win it’s all about that fight knowing you’re always in the match both wrestlers being from the southern section you know they’ve only wrestled once Palm Desert um you know they kind of travel but St John bosow travels all across the
Country this is their second meeting again Barbosa was Victorious at the doc B we tied up at one 40 seconds left and one’s match still haven’t seen a taked down here so we’re hoping it gets decided by one of those 25 to go both wrestlers staying Square little duck attempt from
Barbosa referee asking to Center 13 seconds left here we might be going overtime and we are our third overtime of the finals here sudden Victory first point wins Barbosa a little bit of a drop knee situation trying to change that level no real commitment yet by either wrestler the counters by grigor have
Been great he takes his peek at the clock halfway through the overtime barbos has tried a couple duck unders but Gregor’s been able to reattach on that hasn’t been able to get to the leg there’s the high SE little bit of a slide by attempt some action
Here by Barbosa he’s really looking to finish the single like here here on the edge of the mat rolls to his back though as Gregor picks the knee Gregor looking to spin behind here Barbosa locking on that single leg n seconds left chellan picked the knee and crashed him with his
Hips and there’s the stall call on GRE interesting three seconds to go here in the overtime and we move to the tiebreaker wow Red’s Choice Green my apologies I thought him him pointing with the red hand so Gregor will start on bottom here again we wrestled the full 30 CH
Lock in with a little bit of a Hip Heist he’s in good position here he can’t give up the back points so he gets his hips underneath trying a little bit of a helicopter over and he does it he gets the reversal he tried it the first time didn’t go he squared his
Hips back up he circled out of it Hip Heist over and he gets a reversal to go up 3-1 so Gregor now will be in the driver’s seat if he can hold on here and not let Barbosa escape and he doesn’t so now it’s really about smart wrestling from
Grigor if he can eventually just give up an escape one not two that’s what coach Valencia said he said one not two bar Bosa coming right up to his feet and he hits a mixer out of bounds but grigor saw it no points grigor ultimately Barbosa telegraphed
That you saw it chellin was able to stop it but it was out of bounds and he but he still bring the sigh of relief walking back to the center and there’s the Escape can baros in the last 15 seconds get a taked down it should be 3-2 correct it is
Correct 32 7 seconds left chellan in the driver’s seat here 4 seconds left and the senior out of St John BOS the Stanford commit does it your state champion at 157 lbs RoR chellan wow oh a nice little Salto throw again your state champion at 157 lbs from St bosow the senior the
Stanford commit grigor [Applause] cholakian and a backflip to finish it off you know when we get to those overtime matches you know it gets so tight and he gets that Hip Heist that’s what sets him in the driver position you had mentioned that he’s in that 3030 and
When he gets that hip he and he gets that reversal now he’s got a little bit of room the Escape he doesn’t have to worry about he rode for a little bit he gave up the escape and then didn’t give up the Tak down exactly but I’m I’m
Still surprised he wasn’t going down for an ankle trying to hold on as long as possible I want the least amount of time on my feet so that I don’t have to worry about giving up a takedown and he says I appreciate that sentiment and that lovely advice but I wanted to stay
Titled kudos to him finally winning himself a State title [Applause] [Applause] H definitely looking forward to this one oh yeah you know we talked about this a lot REM match of Doc B we’ll wait for the whistle to to kind of introduce him here we go at 165 PBS senior the number one ranked wrestler in the state
Colin Guffy taking on Joseph Antonio the junior out of St John bosow and already the junior out of BOS controlling the center of the mat man how tall is Guffy 612 wow that is a big 65 pounder 612 great shot there those of you listening on nfhs and Flo I’m sure we’ll
Hear about that in the comments yes it was a joke 612 he’s at least 62 I mean he is a tall boy you know the I love this matchup possibly the potential matchup because at Doc B it was such an amazing explosive match Antonio controlled most of that match
Guffy is very tall and you mentioned his height he’s got that length ultimately at the end of that match at docb Guffy was able to come out on top and he wins 5-4 guffy’s a returning State finalist you know he took second last year Antonio took fourth last
Year again both D1 commits Guffy going to be a teammate of St John Bosco’s gor at Stanford how many of these kids are going to Stanford well man that’s impressive we know that coach we’ve talked to him many times he loves California wrestlers and it’s great to see California wrestlers stay
Home Joseph Antonio is going to go out in that eiwa and wrestle at West Point and Antonio and His short offense here 35 seconds left here in the first Guffy controlling the left elbow it’s always great to see these coaches you know they they spice themselves up a little bit you know
We’re normally in some some shorts or maybe a pair of joggers and and a sweatshirt but to see coach Valencia over in the corner in a in a suit no tie but then we look over and we look over at the boys we look over at Brady be we
Look at coacho roor and they’re sitting there with their matching shoes and their and same slacks and their tie it’s great for them to be able to show their respect and be able to look good it’s a big time moment here in California to make the state finals it’s serious
Business and they’re dressing up for serious business Tuscano doing a great job controlling the center here scoreless though heading into the second choice will go to Guffy Guffy will choose bottom here to start off the second period Tonio starting tough on top oh but looks like he wanted to let Guffy go
Really really quickly well you saw coach Valencia actually get have a little bit of a smirk on his face I’m not necessarily sure if that was designed or he was able to get the Tak down but you saw the same thing I did Antonio just
Kind of let him go there get the Escape I’m always wondering what coach Valencia is thinking always always got a smirk on his face and Antonio here in on a single leg but Guffy controlling the outside arm great risk control by Guffy that that stopped Antonio from
Getting his hands locked on the single leg and now we’re in that Iranian position oh and Guffy will be in the dve driver seat here locked in the crotch gets his hips down gets Antonio in trouble oh looking to lock up a cradle here it’s locked he’s got to be able to
Secure those elbows what I mean by that he’s got got to be able to pinch those elbows and Antonio fights off the Cradle but now he’s caught in a front headlock position Guffy crashes his hips and Antonio slides him back on [Applause] up G doing a good job driving Antonio
Out no stall call there [Applause] got some blood time here but St John bosow JR we’ve mentioned it on here on this broadcast here on nfhs uh you know the trainers just do such a great job you know I look back to that uh match with
What was it Sierra Edwin Sierra from pwe being able to get that lip taped up get him right back on the mat we got a stoppage of blood time here coach Valencia given a couple last Words and here we go 48 seconds left here in the second period your top seed gaffy leading by one coach eror talking about the high SE of Antonio that’s how Antonio scored his takedown at Doc B he was able to get in motion level change and as soon as Guffy
Took a shot he stopped it as Guffy backed out Antonio was able to get in a high SE and there’s that adjustment there’s that adjustment by Guffy yeah to be able to level change and go down to that drop knee it cuts that angle off and that level change from
Antonio that is definitely an adjustment that we’ve seen and now he goes right back up into that front headlock position CES he’s got 5 seconds left on the clock and he’s just going to squeeze tight and move on to the third another highly contested match Antonio will choose a bottom
Position here in the third [Applause] gaffy tough on top Antonio up to his feet gaffy looking for a mat return able to flatten out Antonio and he goes right back into that tight waist being able to pull that hip down good mat return by Colin Guffy Granite Hills coach telling Guffy to
Bring him back in want to ride him out for as long as they can with that one zero lead minute 30 left here in the match and Antonio doing a good job getting out to the edge getting a reset coach Beaman giving him the confidence
He said you can and will turn him we’ll see if that’s true obviously but you know instilling that confidence in that top man and his own wrestler hey we’re going to ride him out we’re going to turn him keep the pressure on got 11 to go in the
Third we are not giving him the escape to go take Downs we’re going to try to turn him and win it and there it is there’s that he got two out of it wow able to get two from a quick tilt right Guffy right on QA just mentioned
The confidence he loads up that tilt on the near side gets the Tilt gets a two nearfall and he extends his lead three to zero we got 40 seconds left here in the match Guffy in the driver seat [Applause] here 28 seconds left Guffy up by three Antonio on his
Belly Colin Guffy was in the state finals last year he came up one spot short he’s got 15 seconds he’s on a two-on-one ride he’s got a three zero lead he’s got 10 seconds to go it’s his match to win here still staying tough on
Top and your Champion he does it at 165 lbs Colin guppy out of Granite Hills the senior in the Stanford commit what a great moment for not only Colin Guffy a great moment for Granite Hills High School coach Beaman coach oor they’re having a great time and your
Champion again at 165 lbs the senior undefeated season Colin Guffy impressive performance look at the emotion right here in front of us you know coach Beaman coach look look at Jesse the hard work that these kids put in you know last year he came up one spot short the emotion on their [Applause] Faces and we’re at 175 lbs one of the most dominant wrestlers this year that I’ve seen to be completely honest Angelo P yes yes and yes and here we goes here we go getting started at 175 pounds Angelo pada Junior out of Powe California in the green
Already in on the shot taken on the sophomore out of P Mason onos in the red ankle bands and pada already on a single leg already with the Tak down he is long he is tough he wants to avenge that loss last year in the finals again he’s a
Three-time California state place winner he made the finals last year he’s back this year and he’s on a mission I’ve been able to watch bada all year long and in my opinion the second most dominant I mean looking at Merill at heavyweight is has been the dominant wrestler but Angelo pada has done
Wonderful this year not only does he go out and win the doc B he ultimately is sitting there his he injury defaulted to ultimately his teammate at Battle for the belt but he’s had a dominant run this year potentially dangerous call right there you know we talked about it in the
Opening you know anaros wow a sophomore from Pitman he’s one of those vasella kids out there wrestling in that little tiny garage oh yep those kids are tough out there in Pitman nice mat return there by pada on the edge of the mat minute left here in the first turlock’s a different
Country you know in that area up there and and Mason when you physically see him to take fifth place last year as a freshman at 170 lb is extremely impressive and and now all year long being able to work his way up that ranking he finally gets
To the number two ranking and he makes the state finals and he runs into a buzs saw of Angelo pada and pada here he’s going to be looking to turn he’s going to be looking for some bonus points up two Z here 40 seconds left in the first you know watching watching Anto
Veros at Doc B you he he makes it all the way to that third place match and he wrestles his tail off and he gets third place as a soft more and now he’s here in the state finals pado with that reach just able to control on top completely 10 seconds
Left here in the first the length of pada being able to look I mean he he’s wrapped his hand completely around the waist can we call that a tight back yeah might as might as well well that’s a good one that’s like one of my jokes well I
Mean we’re both dads you’re new Dad yeah here we go so second period here pada will start on the bottom get to see aneros on top the length of pada is is impressive on bottom and what I mean by that is there it is right there he’s able to
Push his hips back into it clear some space and the Long Reach was able to grab down that ankle it wasn’t successful here but you see it you see that length of him he opens up look he’s spread extremely wide and and now he gets up to his feet and he’s got a
Two-on one they both step out of bounds yeah and I think onas did a great job in that situation you know keeping forward pressure getting his ankle back when pada was trying to counter and getting back on top getting pada to his belly right to the ankles onto veros pada up to his
Feet he’s able to get away extends his lead Now by three nice snap there by on veros there’s like an eerie hush over the crowd right now you know I mean obviously the girls match is going on next to us but the crowd is there’s a hush over it it was really
Weird bada’s got heavy hands I like he I like how he maintains that inside tie head control and a good single leg there for aneros trying to get that ankle up and shelf it and pada almost grabbing the ankle of onto veros 30 seconds left here in the second
Onos looking to get on the board but you see anos not going up to the saddle right he’s got his hand trying to block the hip and there’s that cut back what a counter what a counter the length of bada was able to crash those hips gets
The take down and goes up 5-0 shows his dominance right there in every position offense and defense this kid can score not sure if we mentioned where he’s committed to but I guess you people at home could probably guess Stanford another one but he’s a junior he’s a 25
Commit you know as a freshman taken fourth last year as a sophomore being in the state finals taken second and now he’s trying to get his championship he’s got a 5-0 lead as we start the Third good snap by veros there’s that Insight Ty you’re talking about he’s able to put that hand
On the back of the neck and there’s the stall call on pada averus has been able to get to the legs a couple times yeah I think he’s been doing a good job kind of passing the the inside tie of pada and getting into a leg or almost into a leg keeping pada
On his defense underhook here drag Ono’s controlling That Elbow of pada pada going to be looking for a go behind here little two on one from a Veros just under a minute here and here with a 5- z lead here comes the pace pickup for monos he hits the snap coaches are saying we got a motion look at Cody in the corner just let’s go there’s the motion snapping that head into a front headlock
Position 30 seconds left time running out for an veros like I’ve said before pada in the driver seat here Matt this match is his to win oh strong collar Tie by onos coach Meyers said hey basada do not let him touch his legs there’s the second stall
Call for the one point and now we’re at a 5-1 but with 15 seconds Left and onto Vero putting up a tough fight stale made here 8 Seconds left four-point lead for pada caution Green in proper starting position 5 Seconds to go two seconds and another champion for Powe to solidify their team record title your champion at 175 lbs the number one
Ranked wrestler BR Junior from Powe High School Angelo bada a truly dominant season for anelo Mr pada you are so you’re wonderful on the Forum you’ve got an amazing son a dominant performance dominant and look at look at the team camaraderie you know you can’t see it on camera but just
Off to the right of us he’s got a couple teammates many of his coaching staff it’s it’s incredible the program that they have there in San Diego man you know you know all that too well you know obviously me being from Tula just north of Powe being able to have many
Duels with them but you lived that for a long time being down in San Diego oh yeah Rancher Bernardo were right next to Powe they were always our last Duel of the Season it was always rough um but man such a historic program decades and Decades of winning and adding another State title
This year impressive run by the Titans and I’m looking forward to this one folks here we go at 190 lbs Sunny cling senior out of Canyon Springs he’ll have the green ankle bands he’s taking on Brockton barelli a junior out of Los Bonos in the red ankle bands I got to
Tell you man this sunny cling is impressive he’s a three time California state finalist he’s taken twice he’s taken second twice before obviously as a as a sophomore took second last year took second and this year looking to climb up that Podium to get that first State title for Canyon Springs coach Jason
Low Jason Low’s a Hall of Famer in my opinion abut a phenomenal coach he’s coached some big times the only thing that he was missing was a CIF title he got that that year he got it in the duel he got it in the individuals in the
Southern section he’s yet to coach a state champion and now he’s got it he’s got Sunny cling here for the second year in a row and I’m impressed with the haste and the pace of barelli but it is going to be a tough task taken on Sunny cing barelli had an impressive impressive
Match in the quarters and what I mean by that that there was a little bit of a break there it was a good four or five minute protest uh on an injury whether it was injury time or recovery time and he was very poised he stayed bouncing on
His feet he had the focus on his face it was a close match and as soon as that was over he came out got a take down not only got a take down Advanced onto the semis and moves on to the finals here Brockton burelli Los BOS has put
Together an amazing run over the last couple years definitely a stalemated position here short time left here in the first I remember looking at Brock and berelli last year you know he was he was two and two in the California and I remember I
Was in the tunnel and he came out and he had this look and as he was walking out he stopped and as he turned around he looked back in like I got to get back here it it was an amazing situation I was lucky enough to be able to see that
And now to put that work in not only does he put that work in he makes it to the state finals and he’s got Sunny cling here look and that’s what I’m talking about you can kind of see it I’m not sure if you can see it on the camera but
He’s just bouncing in between everything Sunny King’s got a little bit of blood time here in the lip but berelli is poised he’s confident he’s got that bounce he’s staying loose showing that he’s ready he’s ready he’s not tired he’s pointing at some blood on the mat see and there’s that bounce he’s
Confident let’s see if he comes out and hits another blast double like he did in the quarters you are looking for Champion we’ve had a little bit of stoppage over the last uh you know five seven matches with some blood time here choice will go to barelli he’ll defer cing will go into
The bottom position scoreless here in the second Period Matt returned a little bit of a roll by cing King’s able to get in position here trying to get his high hips he’s got a bottom leg jerk can he lock up the Cradle can Sunny clink get it sunny Kink’s getting back points barelli in trouble here cing looking to
Finish barelli does a great job on the roll through and cing goes right back to try to set those legs he got two points on the nearfall and he takes a twoz lead and he’s trying to crash a near side cradle up to his feet two on one cing
Shifting that that lock off to the hip and a good little elbow pass clean clean got the reversal right no swipes apparently cuz I believe clling was on the bottom position so two to one clingo oh man and burelli Swinging here I like the aggression brelli with a
Drive double cling going for a throw gets him on the edge of the mat puts barelli in trouble on the edge and barelli able to escape out of that Orin you are correct here obviously we saw the reversal but I thought he got the swipes I thought I thought he did as
Well yeah but there was obviously no nearfall but in this particular case he gets the nearfall now almost had the fall there on the edge of the mat belli kept fighting should be set 71 wow we’ll get the adjustment here obviously the scor keepers over on the
Other side of us on the other table he’s going to make that adjustment here it’s 7-1 lead for sunny [Applause] cing it’s tough it’s tough the linelight you know you got all these people working we got a camera guy to the left we got our scorekeeper here on the
Left now we got the score in the overlay right and the crowd is absolutely loving it you know the girls matches are done next next to us they’ve completed their finals and now all eyes are here at the 190 lb matchup Sunny Kling the number one seed taking on the three seed of
Brockson burelli cing able to flatten out barelli here 20 seconds left in the second tough on top is sunny cing committed to Cal Baptist next year under the tenure of Derek Moore deep crossface you see that posture by berelli we’ve seen it we saw it over on
The other Edge to when the takedown happened so he didn’t give up the Cradle he kind of rears that backup pushes up keeps his head high and he chooses neutral Smart Choice thir smart choice if he’s going to get back into this match it’s going to be on his
Feet little bit of an unintentional poke in the eye from sunny cing and now he goes right back to that underhook oh oh nice Slide by by sunny cing and he gets another Tak down and that was off of the offense of barelli who was a complete
Reaction and looking for a mat return was cing but clling lets burelli go burelli resilient right there on the edge of the mat it is it is so tough to get emotion out of Sunny you know I’ve known him since he’s a little kid and he he’s just
Always got this respect look on face we kind of saw it there the coach is saying hey great job and he looked up at him he’s just like okay time to get back to work he’s up 9-2 a minute to go again he’s a three time State finalist he’s taken Second
Twice trying to move up and get that State title as a senior he’s got a seven-point lead really in control here is cling as we got some more blood on the mat Sunny’s got a little bit of a bloody lip he’s been able to to take some water
And rinse it out but there were some drops on the mat now they’re going to clean that up we got the old stoppage of blood time got the mat all cleaned up now we’re coming back and now the assistant’s in position we get the whistle and we got 45 seconds to go in
The third oh and these guys are good level Changed by cing that pressure on that knee and the cut back and he gets another taked down to go up 112 good transition moving left right you know we we saw him score off the offense of berelli and now he got his
Offense of his own changed Direction gets that pressure on the knee and he’s got 25 seconds to go and he’s got a dominant 112 lead exactly what I was going to say very dominant performance here by Sunny King very dominant making a statement here his senior
Year 20 seconds left here in the match major decision criteria so far 15 to go Sunny cing looking to get his State title he’s looking to get the State title for his coach coach Jason low and that’s going to do it the excitement on Jason Low’s face the
Excitement are we going to get some emotion from Sunny we finally get some emotion from Sunny cing your champion at 190 lbs the senior out of Canyon Springs High School Sunny cling absolutely dominant one of the best wrestlers in the state it is so great to see em
Motion on his face he pounded his chest he had a little bit of a smile he’s back to the seriousness now and let’s see what he does as he comes over to coach look at coach Diaz coach low again still no emotion on his face and there’s that
Nice little fist bump from coach you got to love it Brian you know I’ve known uh I’ve known Jason for a very very long time we worked very well together um and to see him get his State title for uh for one of his wrestlers
Amazing we got to keep an eye here on on on Kobe Merrill’s knee he got a little tweaked in the semis and you can see it is heavily wrapped here we go at 215 lbs the sophomore number one in the state Kobe Merrill out of JW North taking on the
Senior from pawe high school Robert Flatt the returning state champion Robert Flatt absolutely looking to become a two-timer but it’s going to be a very tall task taking on Kobe Merill Kobe Merill was the state finalist last year he took second place it was a super close match up with
The doc B you know was off of there in that right in the center of the gym it was a 3-2 decision for Kobe Merill Kobe Merill has a right knee taped up pretty heavily he was wincing a little bit and protecting that knee in the semis that
Was over on my mat you had plat on your mat didn’t you no I think you had both both of these matches that was ultimately that was when that camera went down and I was off that mat for a little bit and had to come back lots of tough hand fighting here from
Both wrestlers coach stepen Neil in the corner for Robert Platt Cal State Bakersfield All-American National Champion world champion Super Bowl champion three time don’t get it twisted you got some good family lineage over there for JW North as well you know Jon’s in the corner and then you look at coach
Kler obviously the kler name here in California and out in Iowa coach Harlen kler Jr here two-time California place winner some legendary coaches and we’ll go scoreless into the second period choice choice will go to Platt here he’ll choose the bottom position man how is Merill a
Sophomore we said the same thing last year as a freshman yeah I go to the gym every day just to look like that and I don’t even look close to that so quick Escape here for Platt Slide by attempt there by Platt you know we talked about it all
Night long it’s so great to see these people in these go out to college in wrestle and use this sport to advance their education and Robert Platz going out to Colombia he’s going to wrestle in that eiwa what a school to go to the Lions doing some big work out there in New
York few California wrestlers already out there in Columbia Jaden Lee Javin jao former Ranch Renardo wrestlers State placers it’s great to see these college coaches you know I I looked around I saw Zeke earlier um you know you had mentioned last year uh your running met CF and uh Derek St
John and here Merill in on a reot doesn’t really doesn’t fully commit to it for some reason I’m wondering if his knee is bothering him or something but I would think he would have locked his hands on the leg there 50 seconds left here in the second plat there with an
Overtie we had mentioned it a little bit earlier in the semis with Merill um he he stays Square no matter where he’s at on the mat he always tries to score up on his opponents he’s got a great stance and a good very balanced base yeah really doesn’t open up a lot of
Offense for plaid he’s got to really get Merill moving it’s a difficult task I mean obviously you know they’re at the same weight class but Kobe Merill is well short and we got some blood time for for aerl brother again trainers right in on the action
You know we talked about it earlier but it’s always just so great to see the coaches in their suits you know as a guy who’s a shorts and flipflop guy being able to see them dress up and uh you know live in the moment it’s amazing one zero lead for Platt as we
Start the Third and he goes right to work on that heavily bandaged knee and that ankle of Merill Merill having a very difficult time putting the weight on that knee you can see it here wow and they’re going to get the stall call on Plat for holding that ankle good
Call again and now it looks like the other knee oh man he needs some injury [Applause] time you know I I you hear it from the crowd and and they don’t understand stand you know he’s had it’s the opposite knee this time but you could see it earlier you saw it in
The actual wrestling he was very hesitant to put that pressure on that knee I mean really he barely put any any weight there I mean they’re taping up that other knee Now trainers are right there again yeah it looks like they’re going to go ahead and try to get a little bit of a stabilization on that knee look at the Matt awareness there by by Merill yeah right he looked at the clock to see hey how much time do I got
To go come on trainer you know get me back in Action here he’s got 35 seconds to go and there’s that outside stabilization something is definitely you know now he’s got both yep love the hustle from Pratt there though Robert Platt standing good position on top circling behind now he’s in a
Spiral Merrill up into a little bit of the Quad pod puts that pressure back trying to attack those hands and he gets the escape to tie it up minute M here in the third we’re all knotted up at One heavy Hands by plat little bit of elbow slide attempt the motion of these big guys you know Robbie Smith and I kind of talked about it in the semis together you start to see the agility of these two 15 Pounders it’s not not just the old style
Of a big guy it’s the athletic ability of them we see that with Merill we see that with Platt we’re going to see it again here in the next finals match heav with sahwan and Merill himself but the agility we’re at 35 to go here and we’ll still tied it
One plot’s been warned for stalling in the top position again Merl staying really Square on that snapdown I’m just wondering if he’s going to be shooting at all 10 seconds now and another overtime match here in the finals we’re moving to overtime first point wins again the senior Robert Platt the
Returning state champ at 195 lbs returning State finalist at 195 lbs Kobe Merill a rematch can Platt do it again as the [Applause] underdog the crowd’s got the flashlights [Applause] going 30 seconds left here in the over time period and the crowd’s got the wave going they’re excited again the girls
Matches are done all the spotlight on these two guys 16 seconds left really not a lot of shot attempts by both guys I think they’re both planning to go into the 6 seconds to go double overtime and here we go to the 3030 tiebreaker again we wrestle the full 30 seconds
Here the crowd the wave ah and a nice little short attempt short set attempt by Merrill trying to get up to his feet got the two-on one Platt does have a stall call he’s got to be careful and a huge return great mat return 20 seconds left here [Applause]
The excitement starting to build here at 25 PBS 15 seconds to go here in the first 30 second plat doing a great job getting into a crab right there but Merill back up to his feet again the stall call looms here Merill on his feet Platt holding down to both
Ankles and no no stall call before the end of that M the end of that third 30 [Applause] seconds Coach G are going to come over and talk about that lock in hands or a stall call I believe it’s a stall St call is going to be judgment he’s never
Going to be able to get that from the assistant he’s going to ask for the Locking hands call [Applause] though that’s what he’s asking [Applause] for great wrestling though from plat on top right there put puts himself in the driver’s seat here and we we want to
Talk about it that’s a decent job by kler you know to give his guy a little bit of a rest there again that’s not what was warranted but in the back of your mind you got to say hey I get my kid an extra 30 40 seconds of rest and
Now he’s in that top position and plat quickly up to his feet again we wrestle the full 30 seconds un aable to get away there’s the separation here a 2-1 lead for Robert Platt Merill now looking to try to get a Tak down he gets shot he’s got to turn
The corner he’s got to step in the hole 10 seconds to go plat crashing with the hips and they’re out of bounds [Applause] wow oh man the most action we’ve seen in this match so far 6 seconds left here and Kobe Merrill is beside himself he did all that
Work and Robert Platt fed him the hips a 2-1 lead for Robert plat with six seconds to go in the tiebreaker Merill trying to push the pace and another champion wow two time defending California state champion the senior from Poway High School Robert Platt two time coach stepen Neil
Says it’s tough to win two state titles but to win two state titles against the same guy not easy at all Robert Platt an impressive win the third Victory here for Powe in the finals and the blood just dripping all all over that white singlet and he’s
Going to hang that one up yeah he’s going to hang that up in his room that’s the that’s the sing that he wore for his second State title well here final match of the evening [Applause] folks this will be the third time they wrestled you know they obviously
Wrestled in the preseason out there in the super 32 got to clean the mat a little bit first still some remnants of the previous match from Mero and here we go heavyweight match Cody Merill senior out of Gilroy taken on Nicholas sahakian Junior out of St John
Bosow Marl in the green ankle band sahakian in the red they’re familiar with each other obviously wrestled in the super 32 and then they were in that dock B Marl looking for offense already so hoaky and driving Merill out of bounds and it was it was a close match
Up at Doby it was 1-1 and then Merill ultimately gets that win and wins it 31 sahaki and only a junior he’s committed to go out to Arizona State here in the Pack 12 formally Pack 12 yeah I’m interested to see what they do with that yeah we we’ll have to look in
Here and we immediately get some blood from uh from Cody but Merill falling in his coach’s footsteps going over to Oklahoma State returning state champs both of them obviously Merill last year at 195s sahwan was at 220s but meos was really two years ago obviously didn’t wrestle in last year’s
Championships um so if there was some confusion out there my apologies to you again a Shameless plug to you know to out there for watching on nfhs network archived hereon flow we get the mat cleaned here minute 18 in the first lots of wrestling left in here in This heavyweight B
Top two wrestlers in the state by far at their weight class nice snap down by Merill the agility in the size of these human beings you know I mean obviously Cody being able to come up to that weight class at his natural weight he got that call from Oklahoma State and
Said Hey listen let’s go up let’s go big let’s see what you’re going to do with that heavyweight Division and sahaki and the growth of him you know last year at 220s he was a monster and he’s a monster here at 285 pounds absolutely his his semis match was
Awesome there was a little bit of a scramble out of bounds and he’s such a Showman ship uh you know a little bit of a scramble out of bounds and it was right in front of the camera and he looked up and he’s sitting on his butt
And he just got the old wave to the camera like hi guys hi everybody out there on nfhs and Flo it it was great if you’re uh if you got that subscription and you go back and look at that archive on Flow um you know it’s the it’s the
Hockey and semi-finals match and he’s sitting on his butt he just he just waves to the camera and I love it it shows personality here we go scoreless into the second period and again he’s a 25 commit he still got one more year here in high school going to go out to
Arizona State and he’ll start here in the second period on the bottom quad pod trying to clear that leg oh and Merl kind of caught [Applause] him and sahaki and secures the Escape great job getting back up to his feet he got up to his feet and started to face
Him and Merl grabs that single leg almost flatb backed him there yeah shot attempt there by sahak in getting under the weight of Merill able to back out oh a great shot by Merill here soah hwan’s got all that weight being able to grab that look at the agility of these big guys
They’re scrambling they’re in a little bit of a North South position High hips is going to win here sahakian holding on to that ankle trying to bump his hips in top and here comes Merill ultimately with can he get that leg in still no control and there’s the two for Merill
Wow a scramble of 285 lbs just under a minute left here in the second period Merl puts himself up by one Hawking coming up to his feet and there’s the escape and we’re going to get a little bit of a blood time here on sah Hocking this
Time it looks like his eye or did just the blood from the nose go up to the eye I don’t know I see some spurts of Blood on the mat it’s definitely from his nose it just kind of came on out a very similar match to what we saw at Doc B
Again all of you guys watching the live feed on nfhs network we’ve been going for three hours like this is a three-hour final obviously we had a little bit of pageantry in the beginning but the wrestling’s so worth it like we’ve been able to see some phenomenal
Matches tonight we see Powe win the the title take the dominance away from that for that Fresno Clovis area with Clovis for the previous eight years and then Buchanan after that for the seven what’s even the final team score let’s take a look at that you know Powe ultimately sets the
Record what they did was so impressive this year wow the previous record was 276 A2 points by Clovis and Powe shatters that with 290 and a half points three Champions look at Buchanan I mean Buchanan ultimately has 255 points unreal unreal tournament this year the fact that there are three teams
That are scoring over 200 points in the California state championships is amazing and hard collar tie here by sahaki at the end of the second Mar will choose to go down here all knotted up at two you know this Championship has been uh been a record breaker you
Know Powe sets the team score record we’ll get back to that in a minute now we’re in a front headlock position and we get the Escape here for Merill to go up 3-2 more blood time what I was saying earlier is you know here comes the records there are 12
Place winners both by Powe and Buchanon 12 of the 14 weight classes as they had somebody placed in the top eight pawe sets a new team record for points here in California they match the record of finalists with seven sorry we got caught up looking at
The blood time in front of us I mean what a performance by Powe I can’t say that enough it’s been it’s been fun to watch them all year you know being able to call the Powe buan in duel and that coming down to the last couple matches
You know I was obviously tied going into that final match uh well they had a six-point lead to scano ultimately needed the fall to get the tie but Powe had already run it on the criteria but the level of wrestling between those two programs has been phenomenal oh yeah not
To count out St John bosow and and their finalists you know they’ve had five here in the finals they’re going to finish it off here with sahakian and a nice little footwork did you see the sweat come off of sahak in face like he he does that
Little twirl clears the foot and as soon as Merill hits him with the club The Sweat just goes flying off the face in the head of sahakian minute 23 here sahakian looking for a shot Merill with the underhook on the left side 115 to go Merill with a one-point lead clears that
Underhook the level change of sahaki he is not afraid to shoot we saw that at the doc B and now we’re seeing it here in the finals and there’s that high SE attempt again Merill stuffs it 45 to go sahakian taking a few shots here hey but really unable to get in
On any deep shots more blood well that’s that Head Hands defense and Merill does it so well not only is he able to block with his actual hands he blocks with the forearms and his forehead and that’s why he’s got the bloody nose all the time
And that that make a joke out of it but it’s so true he leads with that head he’s got that defensive position and for sahaki to be a taller wrestler he takes a lot of level change to get in on those on those legs and really no stalling
Call here against Merill he’s sitting in the driver’s seat I’ve been saying that all night but 37 seconds left he can play a real good defensive game here you’re right but Merl’s never sat on a lead he’s always stayed Square 30 seconds to go sahakian got to push the pace he’s down by
One there’s another shot attempt from zahak and he just oh and there we go there was a deep deeper shot attempt 15 seconds left call now Merrill’s got to be able to stay Square he can’t back up he’s got 10 seconds to go he’s got a
One-point lead can he do it again can he beat sahakian 3 seconds to go and that’s going to do it your champion in two time californ state champion theok the Oklahoma State commit at a Gilroy High School Cody Merill impressive run this year taken out to hockey and in the
Finals well Orin our time comes to an end here we want to thank K&D productions for allowing us to be here we want to thank ultimately nfhs Network for allowing us to be on the broadcast it’s our

Ordog coming in clutch with the commentary. CIF is lucky to have him behind the mic ❤
DC catching the headgear after that win was fire to see irl
definitely stalling at 215 in the first ride out
41:25 I thought for sure this was going to be a head and neck injury when I saw him land, that attempt to roll being stopped nearly caused some real damage.

Zepeda would pin bassett again
1:15:39 that was close! Escape was near
Nah at 1:14:43 bro got cheated out of a state title & he asked for them to check it multiple times & they wouldn’t. Horrible refs & honestly your coaches are the same if they aren’t fighting for you with the shit refs.
Great stalling
Studs
Cali wrestling the best
Hate the 132 lb result. Fell like the better wrestler lost. That illegal takedown was rough. Do think he should have chosen bottom instead of neutral too
Excellent commentary.
Zepeda wanted that state title ..drop 2 weights cause wasnt doing good enough at 150 but he wrestled well 138 his weight anyways
My brothers teammate went 3-2 this tournament. He lost to Paul Kelly. Would of loved to see him in the finals with Zepeda
Great tournament!!! Loved the commentary
I’m sorry, but did Alexander Volkanovski ref the 190 final..?!?!
I’ve never rooted for a wrestler I don’t even know that much, let’s go zinkin!
POWAY ON TOP !!!!!!!! 💪💪💪💪
Back in the day… if you were 205lbs you wrestled 285lb guys.
I've been in a state finals match. Exactly like this. I wish they would keep the same lighting you wrestle with every other match. It's a little too dark imo.
Stop talking about Merrill. Platt is a great champion you guys favor Merrill. You should not be talking.
Yo that cover photo is suspect.
I wrestled for Canyon HS (Anaheim) in the late 80's and Poway was our big rival back then. What a great wrestling school!
Lame
Where is this held? I remember the Stockton days for the State Tourney 😎
Helllzzzz ya clovis putting it down good job Boyz
Zinkin boys were born to be state champions. No hyperbole
I liked all matches. Some question marks here and there. I really felt like the better wrestler did not win in Grajeda vs Navida.
1:14:38 the coach catching the headgear had me rolling
How would HVY Merrill done against Herrera had he not transferred to Iowa? That would’ve been a good one.
Shoutout to all the wrestlers this season 💯
I remember when I went to state back in 1996 it's so cool how they dim the lights an light the mat all up what an awsome experience
Why is there no HS tournament of Champions?
Cali swears they’re the best at everything 🤦🏽♂️
Wtf DC??
Zapeda is a savage. The kid works hard in the wrestling room. I take my kid to DC gym and always get the pleasure to see great wrestlers like Daniel Zapeda practice
Hey man I respect the hell out of you DJ and Cole. I’m bringing a few kids up to Va Beach next month for nationals. But I’ve been trying to preach fitness and nutrition. Would there be any way I could bring them by and maybe you lite a little fire under them and inspire them. They’ve finished top 5 in ga team wise and are ready to step their game up and quit getting beat by the same 3 teams. Hence coming to nationals plus some other things this offseason.
Thanks for the time.
