Scottie Scheffler taking new putter into Arnold Palmer Invitational | Golf Today | Golf Channel

Season ranks for courses that are non major post layouts Tory Pine South the hardest on the PGA to where you see that scoring average 1.62 over par Bay Hill Club and Lodge if you do the math was the sixth most difficult playing to a scoring average of

72. 66 so with more on the golf course let’s bring in our man uh Todd Lewis joining us from Bay Hill Todd what do you got well there actually two big factors that make this golf course so difficult on the PGA tour number one being the

Rough it is very healthy right now it’s being cut it’s going to they’re going to be topping it off at 4 in and by the time Sunday rolls around it’ll be probably 4 and A2 in in height and like I said it is healthy it is very dense

And thick if a ball misses the Fairway it lands in that rough you will see uh several players this week chip it out with a wedge and try to scramble to make a par the the other Factor the greens here first off they are very smooth some

Of the best greens on the PGA tour however they are fast right now they’re at around 13 and come Sunday they are expecting it to be higher I talked to Bland Cooper who is the agronomist for the PJ tour setting up this golf course he said not only will this will these

Greens be fast but they are going to be pretty firm right now it’s the firmest they’ve ever seen these greens for a Tuesday here at the Arnold pom Invitational the only issue is going to be weather for the PJ T in the setup crew expecting some rain tonight and

Into tomorrow maybe close to a/4 inch but you look at what Thursday through Sunday has we’re going to get some high temperatures once that rain moves through that’s going to firm this golf course up if they don’t get a significant amount this golf course is going to get firmer and firmer there is

A slight chance of showers here and there throughout the week but come Sunday although the temperatures will be cooler they’re expecting these greens to be a lot more firm than they are right now obviously and look for the color of these greens to turn from a green to

Maybe a a dark tan showing off the firmness of this golf course so it’s going to be quite the challenge here for these players I talked to a couple of players and they told me this setup here for API is tougher than some major championship setups that they

Faced 87 on Saturday bill is always like the dawning of of of spring in Orlando isn’t it what I love Todd like anyone in the northeas OR Midwest hearing Florida man say cooling to 78 is rolling their eyes right now the first week of March T you also had a chance to catch

Up with world number one Scotty sheffler earlier today obviously his ongoing Bugaboo has been his putting what’s the latest this week you know it’s remark you look at the stats on Scotty sheffler he is second on the PGA tour in strunks gain total despite being 144th in Strokes

Gain putting Tia green he is by far the best player out here on the PGA tour but his putting it needs some improvement and he understands that after the Tour Championship he started working with renowned putting coach Phil Kenyan they changed his setup he also changed his equipment went to a custom prototype

Putter that his manufacturer made for him that was a blade putter but I was watching him today and I noticed that he has changed his putter once again he has gone to what is a tailor made spider X Tour putter which is a mallet putter it’s not the blade putter that he has

Been using and it’s also been cut down a bit um he actually excuse me he’s added a half inch of length so his his length is 35 A2 in so it’s a little bit of a taller putter for Scotty Sheffer and besides going to a mallet putter the

Biggest thing that he wanted to change is removing the line on his golf ball I talked to him about that he said because I want to be a little more more of an artist on the greens he said I’ve taken the line off my ball and the alignment

On that putter that new putter that he has has him pointing the direction he he is going now you see a lot of players whether it’s an Amer or a professional with a line on a ball and a line on their putter while he wanted to again

Eliminate that line on his ball and just concern himself with the alignment of his putter he said having two lines are two measuring devices in regards to reads can be a bit confusing so he’s going to simplify things but he does have a brand new putter in his bag for

API still trying to solve that puzzle when it comes to getting that putter straightened out for the raining PGA Tour player of the year in Scotty sheffler so you hear the changes lab that he’s now making with the putter it seems like it’s it’s one thing after

Another what I’ve noticed over the last call it year or two he doesn’t seem to putt with a ton of freedom and there are times inside 10 ft he can look a little wooden with the putter it is interesting and and going to the going to the Mallet

Model now that’s actually what Roy mroy suggested remember he joined the broadcast the CBS broadcast during the Genesis Invitational and said it might behoove Scotty to to move back to that sort of model just to have more forgiveness but it was interesting so at Riviera I had about a 20-minute sit down

With Scotty sheffler for a story that’s going to appear next week on golf channel.com previewing The Players Championship and we got into his putting and kind of the the perception of it and he said you know technically he feels so much better about you know standing over

The ball and what his technique is going to be he doesn’t worry as much now about hitting it out of the heel but he thinks there’s almost like a a perception issue he’s not saying it’s like a media creat remember he said that over last summer

Where you know you guys are making this into a media narrative he he agrees that it was a problem that he needs to address and he’s taking the steps to do so by adding a putting gr but he said not all eight Footers are valued equally

In other words if he has an eight-footer after hitting a five iron to to eight feet and it’s left to right slider and he misses it that’s a whole lot different than missing the green and chipping up to eight feet up the hill and making that one he said it’s just

Harder to play golf the way he’s doing it putting for birdie all the time and just it’s not all equal secondly he also thinks it’s beginning to get into a little bit of tiger territory Scotty Sheffer at the end of 2023 found himself rewatching some of Tiger’s old clips and

He said the commentators and the analysts would be ripping tiger any time that he missed a putt inside 15 feet because we’ve become so accustomed to seeing Tiger Woods you know pull off the The Miraculous he said it’s actually a benefit to Scotty or or it shows that

He’s entered this rarified air that people are expecting him to make those putts when obviously Tiger Woods is the greatest player that we’ve seen in this generation skot she’s not there yet makes a few more putts he could be well on his way but the T green I mean he had

Put up tiger type numbers last season tiger Prime correct and it was the putting at 145th that was what held them back so that’s why I thought at first maybe the the perception was a little unfair to Scotty but then by the end of the season I mean he agrees with what

Everyone was basically saying that’s there’s one part of your game that is not like the rust and the rust has been spectac and that’s why you’ve been PGA Tour player of the year for the last couple seasons

  1. Note to Scottie re his poor putting being a "perception" thing – denial is not just some river in Egypt. It appears Scottie may figured this out, given that he has another new putter….?? Rest of Tour will need to run for cover if he gets it fixed, but it's not likely. Rory has similar problems still…

  2. The Indian is the most important thing for sure.
But in this case there are certain arrows that work better for certain Indians. I’ve been saying Scottie needs to do this so I’m glad he is. And that stroke did look much much better.
The no line thing will make it a little harder to analyze his stroke. But that’s ok.
