I was lucky enough to be invited down to the stunning Titleist Performance Centre at Woburn to learn all about their new golf ball releases for 2024… In particular the new AVX ball.

DP World Tour Player Matthew Southgate put on a clinic and along with Tommy (Titleist Ball Fitting Specialist)… they had a few surprises up their sleeves which honestly BLEW MY MIND!

Than me show I’ve never actually had a ball fit in but rather than me showing the differences we’ve got DP World Tour player Matthew Southgate here so we thought we would use his ability over my ability let’s say and Tommy’s going to go through the differences we’re going

Prov1x versus AVX and then some little bits with a dimpless golf ball but we’re going to really see the differences and the characteristics the flight characteristics in different golf balls from titler so thank you for doing this Matt first of all we’ll use your flushing ability over over mine but I’m

Watching this live with you guys as well I haven’t seen this so enjoy it like ash said the main purpose of this session this afternoon is to show off new AVX show it against PR 1 x which you could say is is quite extreme relative to AVX

But before we get into that talk to us about your gameer we’re not going to actually hit it but just talk to us about what you play and why you play it how long you’ve played it I I’ve always used the prov1 uh model of bows like through the different Generations it’s

Obviously a new one every two years so I mean I’ve skipped a couple where I’ve stayed in like the 17 bow for a while cuz it just worked so well now I’m into the 21 ball really what I look for is just to make sure that I can actually

Manipulate the ball in the way that I want to In The Wind you very rarely play when it’s flat calm yeah um so I find if I got too much spin I sort of lose control of certain shots in the wind and if I don’t get enough spin I I get that

One that just goes through the wind into the wind the prov1 has always just suited my game really well like for for what I need it for we were saying to a group earlier like there’s actually been a couple of times when I’ve played at higher altitude or really hot conditions where

You actually benefit more from having more spin on the ball it’s not going to be windy just to get the absolute most out of the driver and um try and make some of the par FES play as short as they can and I have actually changed

Into an x a couple of times to do that so matching up matching up the qu conditions the weather conditions and then your spin rates and stuff it’s it makes a huge difference to golf ball yeah you know there are variations within within even a particular model um

Over the years like mt alluded to so every two years there’s a there’s a new model so you play pro one like I said today the purpose is really to highlight AVX as that’s just launched so we’re going to get you to hit some 79 y um

Start with AVX and see what it’s doing actually no we’re going to start with proo X Start first one today Slappy one it that So Pro One X designed to spin a bit more than than the ball you currently use how is that eight out of 10 okay I always fine with the X for me it just looks like it stalls a little more in the flight like when it’s even when it’s flat Cal it

Just that last just as it gets to the peak of its flight my balls tend to just feel like it stays quite stable at the top of it flight whereas the X sometimes just looks to me like it just has a little bit of extra climb in it at

The end if you played hot conditions no wind all the time be nice fine would It y so let’s uh let’s get on to the newble then let’s pop ax in and see what happens I just can’t believe the difference in in the noise yeah that sound this the first time I’ve ever H this ball was this morning and the difference in the

Just the sound that impact is amazing how different it sounds does it feel the same no it feels it feels harder I think like but I think it’s just it’s the sound it’s the sound that associate that hard yeah how do you see that flight started

It just a lot more forward right doesn’t look like it the the X looks like it just gets up fast like really fast climbing yeah climbing whereas that looks like still like going low but it’s like just it’s gradually rising to that Peak High to me anyway that that’s what

It looks like yeah it’s really interesting because the the whole design brief for AVX and the player it’s designed for is somebody who wants more of that kind of forward flight through low spin but also through the aerodynamic package we use on AVX and and it being slightly softer is designed

For that kind of more forward motion and if you look at the numbers it’s really interesting the big the big stand outs AVX is going that a little bit further but we’ve seen quite a drop off in spin you’re on the lower side of spin with AVX and you’re on the higher

Side of spin with bra 1 x yeah so bra one even though we haven’t hit it we we sit in that right the middle yeah what’s interesting though is that the the difference in yardage is just being generated by the Spin yeah because if you look at the club head speed it’s the

Same the same and that’s how that’s why you said at the start of this it’s so crazy for just a normal Club golfer you go out one day and you’re hit in your 79 161 with an AVX then you go out the day after or you lose your ball mid round

You put something else in and know you’re hitting your 79 into the wind he going 153 there’s a 12 yard discrepancy in how far you’re hitting that same Golf Club it’s the perfect argument for f time is it it is perfect right top it

Off a driver yeah the top it here we go here we go Two enough they were they were pretty good with yeah pretty flushed right back into ABX I can see the difference that it just the way it holds its speed yeah we could we could all see there and you commented on that that difference in Flight didn’t you so when we get a little bit further from the hole spin does play a part but that’s also down to

Delivery and the makeup of the club yeah but dimple pattern really comes into effect when you’re hitting these longer shots yeah the The dimple design of of PR 1 x is designed to create less drag and more lift whereas AVX deeper deeper cavity Sharper Edge angle more drag less lift pulls the

Flight down this is our this is our little party trick yeah so this is this is essentially a provy on without any dimples how many when it’s like is it completely smooth or what we yeah pick it it’s like a pole que it’s like a pole

Ball that feels like a golf ball sort of so this is like on the extreme side of like someone who has worn dimol yeah so essentially well we’ll let Matt HIIT it and then we’ll have a little chat about it but are you going to control the spin

It why is it going up so the construction of the golf Bo is exactly the same as Pro one and essentially the layers of the golf ball and how they interact with each other the relationship control Spin and that is the spin is calculated at impact the dimples are responsible for the

Essentially the flight not not the initial launch and the takeoff but the flight once you get past a certain yardage mhm I tried to put a big high cut earlier to get it to stay in the air and it just went dead straight can you

Try and hit it higher than that it just won’t go up was higher but it’s just still dead in it straight out the yeah right got a different trick this time it’s like a magic show isn’t it yeah right so we’re going to line up that with the arrow

Down the target Matt yeah cool perfect does it look like a normal golf ball yeah it just looks exactly the same yeah it it looks like a Prov 1X yeah like with a dimple pattern and stuff it just does looks exactly the same yeah you’d never expect that to be any different to

Flipped it amazing is it so what we doing here then what’s what’s the arrows so essentially this is a really good experiment to show the the quality control we have over our golf balls in terms of dimple depth so with these golf balls we have a

Different depth of dimple on one side to the other so that gives the golf ball a bias depending on how you set the the golf ball up on the te but it’s only like one layer of so it’s 10 1,000 of an inch difference from one side to the

Other no way yeah so it’s the like a human hair or red blood cell if you look at that tell tell us if you can see much of a difference on there and you know there is you know there is a difference cuz you just seen it get hit but you

Can’t see the difference it’s just and this really just highlights the importance but what ball is this underneath this what is this what golf ball is this a titless golf ball a titless golf ball and it’s been made with a defect on it I don’t know if I believe
