Sunday Night Hangout! With Brian Davis and David George! Live Drawing for the Kayak Raffle!

We are live and we got Bailey out there wanting to be on the show as well so this is uh always the awkward moment when we see if it’s actually working so I’m like looking at the uh comments let me know when we go live I think we’re live we got we got

Confirmation uh so I see Andrew Roy Jeffrey Larry Greg Josh Brad Bonnie Allen Steve Kevin lot people as you know when we do these kind of uh lives I can’t keep up with the chat it’s even worse tonight because I’m doing more because I have special

Guests with me I have Dave and Brian Dave George Brian Davis world famous um and uh if you don’t know these guys this is the uh how the the talent and the looks I think that’s how we decided earlier yeah um they they do a lot of u a lot of

Good things for the community and and help put on and and run the times for the uh amyb um event every year and then also Brian works for H2O dreams uh the rumor is he is the world’s best Kai instructor so if you’re looking for Kai

Construction don’t ask me go to a tow dreams ask for Brian um and uh he’ll take care of you but yeah I’m excited we got him in the studio um which Aus behind the camera here has uh crafted I think it’s working he brought his good

Stuff over here and we have the boat for the raffle giveaway and uh that’s coming up but um want Dave you start why don’t you just introduce yourself and uh what you’re all about uh I’m Dave George and I’m uh retired in 45 working days so that’s what I’m all about been kaying

Since 1976 had to build my first but that’s always the best story I was one-year-old so was I I don’t understand um just you know been kaying uh first River was the cheat River in West Virginia and have went down the Grand Canyon with this guy back in

2018 and we have a lot of stories about that and it was just a I’ve been chasing sunrises and sunsets for the last 69 years and intend to do it for another 69 years I hope fantastic he is an international Man of Mystery but we can’t talk about everything so you just

Have to understand he is an international Man of Mystery so Brian hey I’m Brian Davis here uh as mentioned kak instructor H2O dreams been kaying gosh I don’t even know maybe 15 years or so started at the concrete ditch the infamous White Water Center there where I Mountain biked a lot and I

Was like oh that looks like something cool to uh do during the summer time and stay cool right and uh so I got a boat took a lesson and I was out of my boat like five times and asked the instructor I was like is this normal and he was

Like whatever and I was like oh my God this thing is so hard at that point I was like do I walk away nah I was like I’m gonna go for it and figure this crap out and then years later now I’m teaching it so go figure full circle he

Gave me the backstory on how he got into Kai construction but it started with a desk job and an epiphany that there was more to life than paying bills and sitting at a desk and uh if you ever made him you have to get him tell the

Story it’s fantastic but he is living the dream folks um uh I don’t think it gets much better than kaien for a living it’s on the river any any day on the water is a good day whe teaching or going to paddle of lake or whatever or

Swimming or swimming that’s all part of it wrong at you okay last swim what was your last swim oh God gosh I think I told you when was it was was it I think I swim since then I don’t know but I don’t know I had a double

Green race two years ago yeah oh yeah I was training this year uh the THS or the Tuesday when they first did the high water you know training on like six inches All Summer Long right had those lines dialed felt confident felt fast and then first day of real water 12 in

And uh pushing through coming through boofer consequences I got pushed around but I was like nothing major that I was too worried about and then suddenly went to take a stroke coming out of boofer consequences and uh something felt weird and next thing I know I was taking

Another stroke going in to go left and the stroke wasn’t there upside down and I was like oh crap okay went to roll didn’t feel any purchase felt the end of the paddle and I was like I didn’t want to test a hand roll right there so

Immediately hopped out of the boat got my paddle got my boat got my over to the Edie right before go left um there was like some lady there that was like not race training but just kind of like someone was taking her down the green her eyes were

Like I’m good and she’s like thank God and it took off around so yeah paddle blade fell off the paddle and uh so at that point ended up walking and seeing my buddy TR gorilla for the day eventually I got a breakdown and Ru the rest of the day

Yeah that was the last that was my last swim my last swim was cha um a year and a half ago the video it was yeah it’s up there it was um meaningful swim I was uh it left a marker too and uh I was walking with the limp for a couple days

Your last swim I actually I swam in the exact same place you did in cha yeah four years ago so I knew exactly what you were going through there there may or may not be some footage of someone dumping out a boat in Wilson at on the

Front came like no it’s sometimes times never were you’re expecting it so I mean it could be some like gnarly respectable people like thinking you’re gone swim or it could be just some random Place random place with a rock that’s not cooperating with you and sometimes you just got to breathe again

So if you’re out there swimming we all swim so it’s all good all between so uh we’re going to do this boat raffle in just a little bit but before we do that uh I did not ever have the opportunity um or the privilege to meet Amy beg so

If you could why don’t you tell a little bit about Amy and then maybe a little bit how you got the uh the go fast day started the original go fast or paddle fast was uh uh 2009 and Amy wasn’t we hadn’t met Amy at that time and we did

It in January it was 19 degrees there were about 15 people who took took part and the only thing anybody got out of that was $100 fine you’re not allowed to have beer at Wilson Creek in The Gorge so there were several people including me who got an award of $100

We continued on for about four years five years and then it got boring or we didn’t get enough people everybody complained about the cold and Amy had come to town and was learning to kayak and the first time we took her down Wilson Creek it took us an hour and 50

Minutes and Amy had this great little line at the end like anybody want to do a second lab she goes can we go faster and it was like we were going slow for her and no she didn’t really care about that so that’s and we met her from a mut

Another mutual friend she was living in Connecticut um and she wanted to paddle and Connecticut wasn’t what she was going to do and Amy was a counselor for people who struggled with drug addiction and alcohol addiction and very good at it she didn’t drank she drank glove soda

On the river with kayakers who drank beer and but she was just that bubbly personality that I have to do this I have to do this I have to do it so we all kind of adopted her as like a niece so if we’re going to go um she was up to

Go anywhere sometimes over her head on ability but volunteered to run shuttle if she talked herself out of it that’s how we met her and then we stopped doing paddle Fest and and we just it fell apart and then unfortunately Amy died tragically in a skydiving accident it

Was Brian’s idea let’s bring back paddle fast and let’s name it after Amy okay drive me off the couch that was a great reason to bring it back and that’s why we’ve done it for the last five years now or four years now is to do it for

Amy so fantastic and I can tell you the truth that laugh right there I can hear her laugh in my head all the time but in the Grand Canyon almost every night I fell asleep hearing those two people sitting around the fire laughing so great memory great memory I

Have one of my finest was also from the uh Grand Canyon trip that we took that Amy came in on um what how many we spent what 19 days 19 days on the river right so for those that have done to Grand Canyon before you have an option where

If you don’t want to do like the full trip you can come into the trip at Phantom Ranch or lead the trip at Phantom Ranch right so we had I think four of us that were planning on doing the first part of the trip and they were

Going to hike out at Phantom Ranch at day eight and Amy was going to hike in and we were maxed out on our permit number 15 was that correct 16 16 right so we had 16 people um and the night Amy was coming in uh she was going to Camp

With us and so that was going to put us over the permanent level so uh Dave here was like hey kind of be discreet and all that and we’ll come get you and take you to the camp which is on the uh other side of the river that night right so

And those that know Amy comes trotting down and her hot pink pants and uh flamboyant loud and everything else and uh even to wear one of my buddies you know that uh we got to ore one of the rigs um I met him in our wolf in my

Wolfer class and he was a professional guy like out west uh during the summer and and so he didn’t know hardly any of us on the trip except for me and he was like what is that coming down being allow he was like I love her and obviously she made friends with

The ranger and he pulled the permit and he was like oh y’all over permit so it cost Dave even more money awesome and so I hear that may be some of the uh inspiration for the color of the boat she loved pink yeah and she wore pink

And it was never soft pink it was always loud loud pink and so that’s where the boat came from that’s where the cups came from yeah yeah I did know the cups and then uh and y’all work with uh Mia we got to give a shout out to Mia mccu

Over here um for getting this boat and Dagger for for getting it done for uh for you guys it’s fabulous and what they’ve asked me to do and I have great iously agreed is to paddle this boat for a year to make sure it’s sound and good for whoever wins it

Um I want to see the comments comments yeah whoever wins it just know I’ll pad it for year and then after year it should be if there’s anything wrong with it I’ll know by then but uh no I would love uh actually can’t believe I haven’t paddled a code can you believe

That and unfortun I haven’t P one either so that’s out of control I don’t the White Center I haven’t even done that I’ve got of get in a code I just I think I would love it it’s my kind of boat um new th braces it’s got the new th braces

So I’m excited for whoever wins it yeah if you don’t like it yeah you don’t like five Braes I’ve got the old five braces brand new you can swap I will say um quick caveat for me the most important piece of boat that makes me feel connected to

A boat is the thosis I don’t know how how do you feel about that like you have to be snug everywhere yeah but if those thigh braces aren’t right you’re just not in that boat the way you need to be I mean for me I can deal with something

Not being perfect um as long as I have like good thigh hooks I feel like I like the seat height and I think that has a lot to do with putting you into this yeah I had to Jack my rmx seat up I’m just a little guy

Arms so yeah I’m excited about the boat um we all are it’s going to be good let’s see 9:15 we we’re not quite ready for the drawing yet are we rock paper scissors rock paper scissors we’re going to make them St a little biter through everything um all

Right so we could watch last week’s hour and 30 minute you know again just just out we were joking about going to about 10:30 before we do this drawing that my wife it by the way excellent excellent she is actually in studio here uh we have the the brains of

The operation um and the looks you know Mrs Davis um if you don’t know Misty you see on the river say hey um super nice doesn’t bite um yeah we haven’t paddled together yet I don’t know we’re gonna have to change some of this yeah we’re gonna make it happen Wilson and um

Wilson Wilson I think she’s about ready for Wilson folks so I think she wants it she’s nodding Austin’s over here nodding as well he’s ready to get back in the boat he’s been doing a lot of camera work um lately so I was actually going

To touch on that with you um I see a lot of videos lately about uh getting better in Whitewater I think Alex Barum put one up there’s a lot of people doing it and um kind of uh interestingly enough I’ve kind of backed away from some of that

Because I’m usually just filming what I’m doing and at that time I started with my son uh who wanted to be a Whitewater kayaker and so I was like all right we’re going to start not taking on the river to get a roll good roll in a

Pool then we’ll work your way up and going to be a lot of Lake hours a lot of this and and then when I started going I was just filming what we’re doing several friends that were not Whitewater boers and maybe paddle two or three

Times a year with me on trips I told him go buy a Whitewater boat I’m teaching him I might as well teach y’all so that’s what that’s what I was filming it wasn’t like hey I’m changing um everything I’m doing because I think there needs to be Whitewater instruction

Videos it was more this is what we’re doing I’m just going to make a video about the day but um yeah a lot of people want to know how to get better and the obvious answer is to go get an instructor um because you can YouTube all you want and you’ll make progress

But having an in person instructor um is just invaluable and you may think you’re doing something right but you may not be or vice vers you may think you’re wrong or maybe it feels wrong but you’re doing it right but aside from getting an instructor what would be your top

Three tips on how what even if it’s mindset like what how does a kayaker get better at Whitewater Kay first and foremost have fun y if you’re not having fun you’re not going to get in the boat you’re not going to go out there and do

It so in order to have fun get a boat that’s comfortable for you and all that so that’ll make you want to be in it so yeah even like when I teach students their first priority is hey are we having fun yeah and then uh and then we

Can go from there right yep second and all yeah just get in the boat and paddle right um like you said I say instruction it’s not really need needed to learn a white waterer kayak you know you get the essential five get some buddies to go

Out with it you’re going to figure it out just don’t get over your head essential five it does the boat helmet PFD skirt and kayak so five yep um but you can get out with your buddies and an instructor will shorten that learning curve yeah dramatically but when I

Started there was instruction happening but it was more of um you got linked up with it was forums back in those days like on online Forum so you kind of want to get linked up with some guys who knew what they were doing who knew the river

And they would just take you under the wing and teach you all they could teach you and sometimes like with my first group I kind of outgrew what they were wanting to be doing on their weekends in about six months and so I got passed off

To the next guy so um just having people showing you what to do um is is way better than doing it alone like trying and I I taught myself how to roll in a pond uh about 15 minutes away in the middle of Alamance County I didn’t even

Know of another whitewater kayak in the county let alone another boater I was in a there was expedi on his chili his his stuff was up on YouTube and that was about it um trying to learn to roll and it was it was an abysmal display of diminishing returns and then finally it

Clicked one day and I like I rolled all the way over because I actually did it right and then um uh I would say yeah just the the wealth of information out there and just having some buddies around that’ll uh shorten some of that for you

But yeah but one other thing to do too that’s not the most fun thing to do in the world but it’ll get you going a long ways is attainments yes it’ll get you getting your Strokes right it’ll get you reading water and you’ll understand edes and headines for the past so attainments

Is when you go up the river through Rapids you’re trying to like you have to kind of use certain places in the rapid to get through to keep going up yeah and um yeah if you dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball yeah my Budd upam you

Def Justin cson does a lot of attainment and um judging by his race performance maybe should do some more sorry Justin I gotta poor Justin swam at 10 foot unbelievable I have not seen him swiming in 15 years he’s a fabulous Boer and he came out of the water and said literally

I can’t believe I just swim I was like well I swam in this pool too few years back and I couldn’t believe I just swam so it happens to everybody but yeah tments are awesome um already happened yes so I see a couple comments um the cut off for the

Raffle is already happened so there’s no more there’s no more entry we’ve already got all the names plugged into his app which in just a minute will hold up he’ll do the um Hitt yeah we don’t have the the high-speed way of putting it on

The screen for you so we’re going to put it in front of the camera and hit the button and it’s going to generate a winner and hopefully that person will have his phone on because along with all the entries they put in their phone number we’re gonna try to call this

Person on camera and announce to them that they want if they’re not watching already so um fantastic yeah I see sax bahal kayak SKS training center that is a world famous kayaking training center it’s basically the muddy Hall River damned up and there’s a muddy Beach to

Enter and that’s where that’s where I learned that’s where Pete learned Austin uh the point is it doesn’t take a destination River to practice kayak and you can attain in whatever water you have oh is that this River minutes Ro y That’s it right so literally that’s the that’s the

H River all comes together from the sea which is sisa um where you came across the last bridge and turn left at the T there’s a dirt road right there just go down there about half a mile that’s that’s the little damned up portion of

The river that is the lak okay um yeah I’ve taught 50 60 people how to roll there you kind of wear a nose plug in that one but the earplugs whatever kind of like the pigeon yeah no no it’s worse I’ll drink the pigeon

For you need to see the hall oh my god oh yeah I forgot about that think of coffee with a lot of creamer that’s pretty much how it stays especially if it’s running the brown claw um yes yeah people think this brown claw thing came from like these pristine Rivers no that

Was some uh some scared redneck here on the hall and we may be actually stealing that from the yakkin the yakkin may be the brown claw originat um that’s the that’s the muddiest river um anything you want to add no why don’t we uh get everybody make everybody happy and pull this thing

All right so he’s gonna pull his app up um I’m G to try to look through some of the comments and we’re going to go back and watch the last hour and a half from last Sunday before we show you the app love it these phone calls keep

Coming too Kevin get a Yukon get a c kayak oh yeah so I’m unable to keep up um I’ve got so we got the whitew boats then we have the Yukons which are 14 and a half feet and that feels a specific niche of um touring but with decent

Rapit up to class three and four yeah but then like now we need a 17f footer and the guy’s like are you serious so now everyone went out and 74 now we’re going to the coast so I don’t know what I’ll tell them to get next like 21 foot fiberglass something

Kevlar how about a 21 foot fiberglass you know you know Bay Bay Watch boat I have a friend with with a 30-footer so um yeah we can we can go fishing are we good we’re having uh we’re getting there we’re getting there so he’s going to put that up in front of

The camera and Austin’s going to work his magic I can record so could have pre-recorded but then it would have been F oh yeah someone want a paddle and I’m you know all right I have you probably see my fingers in this let’s get a good

Spot that good bring it in real close keep going keep going all right Here Comes it here it comes there go I’ll let it play there minut everyone’s name go you’re there getting right somewhere there oh it’s going dark all right let’s hit raffle there it

Goes folks someone is about to be very happy first winner is a jerus STM looks like St man you won the code all fantastic I know him I met him in person at green race and uh he’s fan of the channel he’s definitely a river King Watcher uh

Commenter great guy dad he actually submitted some voice over I needed some kids voices for one of my videos on the greenb and he had his kids his wife record that so um fantastic I’m excited for you man uh hopefully I think it’s jarus I think

That’s how you say it J I think that’s right I hope I’m not messing that up man you told me I just don’t remember go we’re pulling your number up now I wonder if he’s on here tonight well not miss 36 yep got it there you go jarus I think I think it’s

Jarus all right here we go hello may I ask speak to jarus jarus this is this is Dave George I’m sitting here with Pete Beck and with Brian Davis and we just finished the raffle and I guess you’re gonna figure out real quick why we’re calling you oh yeah oh

Yeah congratulations you are the proud owner of a hot pink medium code oh my gosh that is so exting man awesome I see where do you live I live in Greenville South Carolina specifically traveling okay yeah we’ll get you the boat then uh Brian Brian Davis will arrange to meet

You and give you the boat yeah I live up in Saluda so not far at all well thank you so very much just let me know if I need to give you my phone number or being in touch any other way I’ll do whatever I need to well we got your phone number

So hey so now that you won when we when are we going to see it on the water oh man um you got to be in front of a river King camera if we can make that happen yeah that would be awesome definitely yeah we let’s do that be a perfect place to

Put that vat PFD all right well all right we’ll reach out to you uh again and set up the meeting and get you the boat awesome man thank you so much are we are we saying are we saying your name right is it jarus is that how you say it that is

Correct okay that’s what I thought I just want to be sure J J J Perfect all right thanks again and congratulations thank you so much I appreciate all you guys all right now fabulous actually we should tell them um again we’ve already said that we’re going to do 25% of this money

Goes to a clean wilsonc creek.org group yep and the remainder of the money goes 75% to American Whitewater for the gauge specifically at Wilson Creek so total numbers um with 17 $110 or be going to American Whitewater and the remainder goes to a clean Wilson creek.org and as kayakers donate some of

Your time to that group because those are the people he keep Wilson Creek clean yeah and they’ll love the money but theyd probably love us to show up and help a little yeah so and it is gratifying to do the help so the gauge the money is for the gauge and the money

And the money will go under Amy’s name so Amy’s really making the contribution to everybody yeah so those of you who don’t know life at Wilson Creek before the gauge it was terrible they had there’s the bridge gauge that was the only gauge so it required Someone who

Lived nearby to drive by get out hike through the Briar look at the the bridge gauge and then put a Facebook post up hopefully he was not busy that day and could and then that might be all that you get all day and you don’t know if

It’s going up it’s going down or just guess we guess there was a lot of trips to go find out what you got got back in the day which is um some big ones yeah I showed up and the road was underwater one morning yeah so the the gauge cost

Money to keep running year by year so um approximately $7,000 is the number I was told yeah so this is going a long way to keep that gauge in place um which makes that uh and by the way exponentially better I know you guys talk River King

But if you’re not a member of aw it’s 35 bucks a year it’s a great magazine and they’re using your money to keep keep the rivers open for us yep join join come to Gully FL I’ll sign you up if yeah literally every river worth running in the entire North America is

On AW site everything you need all the beta it’s an incredible incredible resource um and then of course getting more access is getting uh more gauges all that’s going into it so yeah strongly support uh aw there so we appreciate y’all making this happen uh yeah thank you again Mia thanks dagger

Uh thanks all of you out there watching and uh who chipped in and everything and congratulations jerus uh and definitely I think first PFD the PFD and the boat on Wilson what are you doing next weekend I don’t know if I can make that happen we we might so be hard next

Weekend yeah rain’s coming let I we I got your stuff too I got your information jar so we’ll get together and uh we’ll see what kind of um comfort level you would be at like what what level we would need to get plus six you’re fine and I know an

Instructor who could probably be there um and then and I know I know a I know a guy in a Green Bay Packer helmet that would love to be there too a new one a new replacement one yeah so he just um you want to tell him about that um no I

Don’t want to scare anybody I don’t want to scare anybody away from going to wills and creen he’s got a brand new Green Bay Packer helmet it looks good yeah there the real shallow Rock we won’t tell you where it’s at so you don’t panic yeah but um it’s all fun

And games to to it’s really fun in games right Y no Wilson’s a great one the the fun level to Danger level is really good on that River there’s just a couple spots um you kind of watch for it then of course you know if you keep the hairy

Side up it’s always better so and if you watch his hour and a half video you can I’ll tell you where the scary spot is yep fantastic thanks guys for coming coming out thanks for uh bringing the reputation up around a little bit special thanks to um

Austin I wish I could turn his camera around he’s got the lights the the microphone um the big camera he’s over there with his he’s the AV Tech yeah making it all happen and uh just want to say thanks to to Austin man thanks for coming by he just got done traveling

Today still came by to make this happen so you in a picture yeah nope oh no but uh thanks again I will uh uh not sure what we’ve got going on next week um for the video yet but the next week after that I will be up at canu copia speaking

Um on how to get started in White Water I’ve never been so that’ll be exciting have you been to a Cano copia I have not I haven’t either have you no biggest padding Expo in the world and they bring all kinds of folks from all the other

Disciplines not a ton in the white water and I think we’re trying to help them build that up a little bit so I’m excited if you’re up in the midwest or if you’re going to be there anyway um come by run we’ll be there all weekend I

Got my um couple buddies Austin Brian and uh Kevin are G to be up there with us so we’ll have a few hats and beanies um stickers of course but uh love just say hey to everybody and see what that’s all about but um I guess that’s it for

This week thanks for coming by thank you very much enjoyed it the first in studio podcast uh $34 table from Walmart really made it all come together never mind the thousands of dollars of Austin’s gear here that’s actually making it work all right guys uh stay tuned congratulations jarus and uh see

Y’all next time see you on the river
