About Ross Eves Golf
Ross Eves Golf is all about improving your golf. From golf fitness, to golf biomechanics to beginner’s golf tips!
So, what’s my background?
Well, as most professional golfers my dream was to play professionally. However, that dream was a little lofty for someone with my talent. So, I decided to take a different route. This route was to investigate the science behind getting better, specially how to hit the ball further! After all, who doesn’t want to hit the ball further.
This desire to learn how to increase swing speed lead me to investigate the body in terms of golf fitness and golf biomechanics. This interest in golf fitness lead me to complete TPI Level 1 and 2; become a qualified massage therapist and then extend that knowledge by completing a Masters degree.
During my Masters, I focused my research solely on increasing club head speed through golf fitness interventions. This line of scientific enquiry provided me with first evidence and golf fitness routines which would increase swing speed and hence increase club head speed. Personally, I found this research to be extremely helpful, and I increased club head speed by 15mph (from 100mph to 115mph) within 1 year.
After this I have turned my attention to the biomechanics of the golf swing. This combination of golf biomechanics and golf fitness knowledge allows me to provide coaching to all levels to help increase club head speed.
Will zat Taurus he’s one of the best players in the world and he’s coming back from injury after having surgery on his back and we’re going to have a look in depth at his swing what caused the injury what he’s working on and why he’s
One of the best players in the world if you like this analysis there is a discount code in the description where you can get your swing analy by myself so we’ve got an iron swing on the left hand side and driver swing on the right so we’ll talk about posture first off
Will’s quite upright with that chin as you can see he’s that neck sits a little bit more upright than a lot of guys a lot of guys are a little bit flatter with that neck that can cause some little issues around that neck I would like to see will a little bit more
Relaxed at setup Adam Scott had very much this posture earlier on his career but you can see Adams moved more to a neutral spine so that could cause some issues around the back potentially don’t think that’s exactly the cause as we’ll look later on in the swing but it’s a
Little micro sort of suggestion there as you can see setup wise again very very sort of traditional if we ignore that neck position arms hang under the shoulders nice little bit of knee Bend and then if we look from face on he’s got a nice bit of foot
Flare pretty neutral to strong grip with the left hand again pretty neutral with that right hand with the driver a little bit of tilt there helps hit the ball on the upward angle we could say his ball positions a little bit far back for driver however that could just be the
Camera angle but maybe other camera angles will reveal that his ball position is a little bit back so we’ll take him in to back swing so the big thing with will swing is he has a lot of width you’ll see first position really nice and wide one piece takeaway that
Club face is nicely Square to his back line he’s got a nice amount of hip rotation that right hip Works back just a textbook position there love that for for generating some power which will is one of the longest hitters in the game so let’s have a look from face on with
The driver you’ll see that right HIIT pocket move a little bit lateral and then move back so watch that right hip pocket little bit lateral and then starts to rotate and you’ll see look at that width there look at how far that but of the club is away from his waist
Great position to generate speed and power look how straight that right arm is and look how he’s rotated nicely through that rib cage and also he’s got a nice bit of neck rotation there if I just take those lines away just look how his head you see that little bit of head
Rotation which just facilitates that neck to rotate that thorax to rotate and allows him to create that nice elastic energy in the back swing so love that very very traditional very athletic one piece takeaway now let’s see what he does as he works the club back you can
See look how straight that right arm is staying very very unusual most guys you’d see a little bit more Bend in that right arm you can see look at that width there that is absolutely ridiculous you can see how his spines tilting away from the Target that head has moved a little
Bit off the ball there if you can see just very very very slightly it’s more of a rotation should I say you can just see it there starts to move a little bit more off the ball but you can see how much width he’s generating there and
Then if we look from face on you’ll see he’s got quite an upright swing here that shaft is nicely pitched you’ll see a lot of great ball Strikers that plane of the shaft in back swing is often a lot steeper than what it is in down swing you can see how it’s rotated
Beautifully into that right hip you can see a little bit more of that left knee very very eff a letic position and look at that right arm that’s ridiculous how little Bend he has in that right arm as we move him back you’ll see gets a little bit more
Lateral with that head working beautifully into that trail hip and look how far away his hands are from his head you’ll start to see as well look how that head starts to move even more behind the golf ball you see that there there and look how high those hands are
It’s a great position for power not a lot of guys are going to be able to do that but you can just see how far away those hands are from the head there’s not a great deal of wret but you don’t often see that when the guy is that wide
You see starts to move off the ball a little bit gets a real really look how much that torso is moved away from the target at the top of the back swing you can just see how powerful that position is if we look on the iron swing you’ll
Start to see that shaft working up really high hands obviously it’s an N swing it’s a little bit shorter loads of width there I love that position of the right arm that’s going to allow him to get it nice and in front of his body just love that back swing position now
The next few frames are a little little bit unique to will now you’ll see a lot of guys on tour really wanting that Flex lead wrist position at the top will is a little bit more in that cut position and you’ll see in downswing how he moves
Those wrists in a very sort of funky way that we don’t see a lot of guys on tour doing so we’ll ignore the wrist position for now we’ll just look at the athleticism through the pelvis here and why will has had some issues so what we
Used to see is Will had really drive that trail side of the pelvis up which had cause a lot of compression through that trail side of the spine and that’s I think where he’s had some issues with his back in the past so we need to watch
Out for that so let’s just see how he starts the down swing the first move is going to be down with that pelvis as you can see that pelvis moves down and starts to rotate see that move down down now this is the unique move that we
See with Will is you can kind of see how much that face of the driver is looking at the camera and also that lead wrist position so if you look from down the line watch this lead wrist position can you see how much extension there is in that lead
Wrist most guys are working towards flexion whereas will i’ suggested we saw it on 3D actually moves more into extension maybe wrong or just keeps it there but you can see that it’s very unusual most guys are moving to that Flex position very very unusual but what
He’s doing to help shallow the club because if we move into this extended position here often that club shaft will steepen but you’ll notice with will that club shaft is actually shallowing so what he’s doing is that forearm is rotating this way which enables him to then shallow the club that trail elbow
Will move down and under the lead elbow you can see there how that trail elbow is below the lead elbow and that helps shallow the club but what we will see with Will is look how open that face is if I just zoom in that face is massively massively open
Here we’d see guys having more of a position where that club face is pointing more towards the camera very very open which will start to see some little funky things he does in the downswing but again let’s have a look that beautiful sort of posture there lot
Of guys you’ll see early extend but he’s increasing that angle here whereas most guys you’ll see amateurs will stand up on the ball and early extend now will does move closer to the ball which we’ll see through impact but he has to do that just with that open Club face position
But he doesn’t do that by losing that posture here so let’s bring him a few more frames down and you can see this is a really good checkpoint and it’s a lot better this position so it used to be when Willard get sort of level with the
Pelvis or the pelvis at 0 de to the Target you’d see that right hip a lot higher and that’s where we see a lot of issues generally through the spine so he’s working on that position of as he drives into transition that that right hip is working more down than driving up
Which just helps level out the spine a little bit better and alleviate some of those compressive forces that’s what he has been working on apparently and you can see there it’s a much improved position there he’s done a really really good job and it’s very very difficult
Move that when you’re moving at such high speeds but you’ll see there again like we talked about that trail elbow below the lead elbow creating a lot of lag for Speed and you can just see how powerful that position is there I want you to watch through the swing as well
How these P this pelvis will start to elevate starts to move down then Elevate where he’s pushing off the ground to create some ground force you’ll start to see a spine tilt back which creates that upward angle of attack but again can cause some issues in the spine with a
Lot of Leal flexion especially if he’s not strong enough through the core and most of that flexion isn’t coming from the upper part of the spine if it’s coming from that lower region that’s where we can see some injuries but you’ll see really powerful position that right knee driving inwards he’s
Maintaining that lag you’ll start to see from down the line watch as he drives that trail knee towards the Target that club shallow in and then as we talked about that face is very very open compared to most guys you can see that face there whereas most guys would be more into
That sort of position where they can just rotate now because that face is a little bit more open than we’d see with a lot of guys let me just get rid of these lines so I can really show you what will does so we we look at that
Line on but we’d see most guys like I’ve said more into that position so what he’s going to do is I want you to watch this wrist watch how you see there how it really starts to drive that logo down can you see that so it’s very very late
This position or these few frames here that’s where Will’s creating all that square in here because he is rotating so much he will move a little bit closer to the ball you can just see that lineer he just moves a little bit closer I wouldn’t really categorize that as early
Extension now if we drew the atypical line from the uh from the top of the swing a lot of coaches would say that is early extension however he’s driving that right side of the pelvis so much closer towards the ball just the way the pelvis is sort of orientated that center of the
Pelvis has to move a little bit closer because he’s got so much rotation so it’s a bit of a uh contentious Topic in in golf instruction early extension a lot of guys do it a lot of great guys do it Jack Nicholas did it but it’s how do you
Define early extension if you’re just going to Define it as that butt moving closer to the ball then yes that is early extension however like I’ve talked about earlier in the the analysis you don’t see him standing up out of posture he maintains that posture on the way
Down it’s just more he’s driving that right hip so much so much rotation there he’s driving it towards the target it just because of how how the pelvis is built it’s an ellipse it just forces the center of the pelvis a little bit closer to the ball than you it’s just anomy so
It’s not something that I’d really um worry about for will I’d look more again at that how much side bend that he’s getting there and that position of that trail hit driving up again he’s doing much better job on that right hand side of the screen than he’s done in
Previous previous years but you can see now he starts to really drive that pelvis up that’s a great way of creating power that lead leg is going to come up off the ground it’s a very sort of common move with guys that are quite slight in the build quite narrow narrow
Humans you’ll see this really vertical jumping Force reminds me a lot of Justin Thomas how the body works you’ll see again look how much he hangs back again I think that’s where some of those issues are coming through his back which I’m sure he’ll be working on diligently
With his coaches and the guys at TPI you can see just there how we’ve got quite a lot of side Bend there I’m assuming his coaches will get him working a lot on stabilizing the spine working on these erectum muscles ql and the obliques the rectus of Dominus just to really get
Some strength there so that side Bend can come a little bit more from up top rather than these Lumber vertebrae but I’m sure will knows exactly what he’s doing and he will get there you can see how powerful That Swing is I love his action I just think it could do with a
Little bit of refinement especially if he swing wants to last quite a long time I think you’re going to see this I’ve mentioned in some of the videos before that you’re going to see guys with a lot shorter careers than previous that Adam Scott sort of mold where what is he 43
Still going top 50 in the world he’s probably one of the oldest guys on tour now whereas maybe 10 20 years ago you’d see guys in the 40s like VJ sing Jim winning where I don’t think you’re going to see that now I think it’s very much
Switched to a shorter career guys are coming out straight away away from college winning they’re more athletic and I just think you’re going to see some more funky movements that geared more towards speed rather than just getting it down in the middle of the Fairway so I think you probably are
Going to see more guys getting injured but Will’s got a very good team behind and I’m sure if he can manage to work those things into it technique he will avoid injury and I hope he does because I’d love to see him on the golf course winning major championships winning
Events because he really is that good of a player if you’ve liked this video please hit the Subscribe video subscribe button and again there is a link in that description for a reduced price on swing analysis
