Likes the show so when I uh when yeah got the opportunity she so all all I heard then was you don’t really like the show you watch you watch the show de uh my wife watches the show I can hear it going on in the background so you would have heard the
News that Sam Pang here is hosting the Lois this year as someone who all knows how to play on the big stage have you got any advice for him advice don’t stuff up mate G yeah y congratulations thank you very much I really appr have you ever
Been ever been Tois I’ve been to AI Afterparty but not well you one man you won two brown lows but until you’ve won a silver Logan you haven’t achieved any you you sh your 357 game career that uh you never froze on the big stage you’re absolutely magnificent all the way back
To um the very first goal that you kicked in your AFL career was magnificent it was just one highlight after another G it was magnificent you obviously played for jalong in the middle of of it you went to Gold Coast and we’ll get to that a little bit later
On when do you reckon you played your best footy when were you at your absolute Peak as a play do you think yeah I I reckon I started playing some consistent footy around the’ 06 season um you know I think it took me a little
Bit of time just to learn what it what it uh you know what what it took to be professional um and as I said just to play a high level week in week out and I think for for most young kids coming in it does take that three or four years um
But yeah looking back on some of these highlights and what a blessing it was to to play the at the top level for such a long time it is this is these highlights are an amazing visual uh timeline of your hair slowly disappear where do you reckon you played
Your best footy go Coast or jalong yeah no seriously just after I lost my hair actually some people would would argue that the level that you played at given the load that you had to carry at goal Co um this was as good as you ever and
That is given that you played at an incredibly high level of galon yeah I still believe my my most consistent season was the the 2010 season my last year at jalong um but I think you’re right I knew that when I made the move to the goal Coast um you know it was
Going to be a very young list I think the average age was about 1920 um and obviously we we had some real challenges over the over the seven years that I was there but um my focus was always um you know about performing week in week out
To set a good example for those younger guys um and although we didn’t have the success on field that I would have liked um I still believe I I left that club in a better and and hopefully um you know they can continue to improve and and um
Have some onfield success in the future G in this game that we love your individual achievements are mindblowing and I take you to the lap of Honor down there at jalong in 2021 and have a look at just the uh the stats there Graphics I wasn’t feeling as good Parry Taylor next he
Uh probably probably should have put his first I reckon by the end of it it just looked like it was a listed player should have gone exactly we we showed a highlights package that could have gone for about an hour and a half in it was some of the
Best goals you’ve ever kicked do you have a favorite is there one for you that stands out yeah I reckon my favorite is a goal I kicked in the’ 07 prelim final against Collingwood um it was uh it was obviously in the last quarter a very close game um and we I
Think we went on to win that game by 5 Points I’d have to say that’s my favorite I’ve I’ve kicked better goals than that um but um yeah I’ve I’ve uh I’ve definitely watched that game many of times and and obviously we went on to win the Grand Final that year
We we did see that goal it was in your highlights package I I put to you that there was another goal you K in the SE the famous semi-final of the scg against Sydney that had the Umpire not got it completely wrong this might have been
The best goal you ever kicked in your career do you remember the moment I do and I thought the ball was still in play that is that defies all sorts of mathematical probability that you’re actually when kick that ball do you think it was in play yeah I actually called goal
Yep no but that um and correct me if I’m wrong I’m pretty sure that was the that was a semi-final against CD and we lost by Nick D Nick D um who knows if that was that that was paid a goal I think Sydney went on and
Won the Grand Final that year um that’s 40 just if you’re just joining us we’re talking to one of the greatest players ever Gary algia and we’re showing goals of his that didn’t count it was a remark hey I don’t think we’re winning that loan hey here’s a goal that
Actually did count by the way I’d love to ask you where this one ranks this is my favorite this was only take this was this was this year two months ago up in cans this is this is your greatest ever goal and I’m not alone here have a
Listened to the commentator and where he thought it ranked on the day straight out to his old teammate ABT here he goes from the pocket left foot snap are you kidding oh my goodness if that isn’t the can’s title physio goal of the day inside the first minute I don’t know
What it is yes the can total that’s big that’s big what was that game what was that game you play I I played a game up in cans I I actually had a um a made of M Road Zack Smith that used to play for the Suns and
Cats and he’d been playing some footy up there and had really enjoyed the experience and so they invited me up for a game and um the club were good enough to race how much prep did you do for that can I ask because youve just as business as usual you sweep around the
Back of the pack you can probably tell from my weight that uh I’d done about two weeks of training but uh but I did I did enjoy the experience um it was a really really great Club really good group of guys and and um yeah I uh that
That might be it I think well you know a bit about football clubs cuz you’ve been around them all your life and you famously were part of this club from a very early age there you are with your dad you were known as a bit of a pest
At CAD Park is that a fair description from the playing group at the time it is I think the the the plays refer to us as the Barefoot pests um that was more Nathan I was always the one that was well behaved no we I had so so many great
Memories of you know our time around the football club um as kids you know we used to go along to all the training sessions go along to the games and and for me it was more about just spending quality time with Dad it wasn’t necessarily about going along and
Watching footy um and and you know obviously Nathan and I really looked up to a lot of these players growing up and Billy would always Billy Browns would always take take the time to kick the footy with us and um you know run around with kick torps at your head I heard
That is correct there’s another story I don’t know whether this is folkore or not but Mark BTO champion of the footy CR from out west of course did he once lock you in a toilet on a bus is that a true story that is a true story I can’t
Remember it too well but I have been told that and I I think when my dad found out he nearly jumped off the bus you can’t talk didn’t he get home one night and realize he’d left you both at training I won’t comment on you going want to be part of you’re
Going to be part of one of the great modern clubs uh at J long the success was was enormous but 2006 you have a frustrating season you get to the end of the year you’ve been climbing and then you just sort of hit this flat spot in ‘
06 and leading teams famously come in and sit down can you remember how significant that was for the team and and what was said to you by your peers specifically yeah I remember that very well and and um if you go back a couple
Of years we made a a prelim Final in 04 I think it was against uh the Lions and then that semifinal against Sydney and so we went into the’ 05 season um you know expecting to to play finals football and and uh maybe even you know
Finish in the top four um obviously we had a disappointing year we missed finals and and the club at that time felt as though you know we some changes needed to be made around the football club um and that was part of the reason why um they employed leading teams um
And a lot of that was just we felt like we had some really great leaders but it was just to I guess create an environment where guys felt comfortable enough to challenge each other um and also just create some structure around our leadership group and and one of
Those exercises that I took part in was was uh sitting in front of the group and and them um telling me the things that they believed I was doing well and and the areas that I needed to improve um and I think as a young man it was it was
Really hard to take because I was told at that time that um I think they said to me that they believe that I could be the Chris Jud of of of the cats y um but for that to happen I needed to train harder and needed to train with more
Intensity and um I’m I’m just just so thankful now to those guys that they would care about me enough to to give me that honest feedback um and that was a real turning point in my career um obviously went on to have a have a great
Season 07 and we went on to win the Premiership leading teams by the way leading teams B basically just playing paying people to come in and make you feel bad I think my mother’s the president hey um these are the flags Mar FL this is
The first one I mean you’re coming in ‘ 07 and you’re doing absolute number on Port Adel how how I mean satisfying obviously 09 was remarkable what was it like to be in this group at a time G when you just you’re powerful and you know you’re good and you got great
Players all over the place take us inside that to Long team yeah I think I think it was just the belief within the group and I think that that’s that’s really important for for any young site and we were a young site at that time when you we had a really talented list
Um but for us to go on and have success like that we we needed to train harder um and and they were some of the things that we spoke about with leading team so you know to watch that footage it obviously means so much to me it had
Been 44 years up until that point um you know from the from the club winning their last Premiership and I can still remember after the game being down in the rooms with guys like Billy and my dad and and guys that have played in those four losing Grand finals and just
Seeing how much it meant to them so would it have happened I mean there’s this one famous bit of vision of course at the end of the 09 Grand Final one of the great grand finals was so tight look at the score line and the time in the
Last quarter the famous mty Scarlet topokee you’re right in the middle of it all how often have you replayed this 30 seconds of football through your brain yeah I’ve seen it a lot um you know I I mean St Kilda were a fantastic team that year and I honestly believe that Grand
Final could have gone either way um but I was just so so proud of the boys in the way they played out that last quarter because I can still remember going in at halftime and and I think it was Darren Milbourne that gave a couple of free kicks away they kicked a couple
Of goals and um I still I can still remember Mark Thompson saying if we lose this it’s on and and so I I kind of felt for him and um I know that the the boys um you know really wanted to step up and and um and and really finish out the
Game and that passage of play was obviously really important Matty Scarlet still tells me I should have handall the ball to him because he would have kicked the goal but um as you know you know Matty skylet also won the can’s total physio Topo of the day that’s that’s probably the big take
Away there know you’re involved in all the big moments down there at jalong and especially this one at cardinia Park when Bary goes into the toilet while you’re doing a post match have a look at the expression as he comes out of here and you you I think he only came out for

What was it was it constant niggle was it yeah it was constant niggle but he he was just very good at his role he stayed focused for the whole game um and you know I I knew that early in my career that if I was I was be going to going to
Become a good player I needed to learn to deal with this you look at all the the Champions over the years and at times they get tagged and and you need to learn to take your game to another level um and I I truly believe that Ryan
Crowley was one guy that helped me do that because I knew was always going to be a really tough matchup um and that for for me to become the player that I wanted to I needed to play well against yeah specifically though what does that
Mean just got to outrun him what do you do like I don’t know what you do if someone’s just going to follow you around the whole day yeah well I needed I needed to get the ball and have an influence but I um I’d love to share a
Story about Ryan Crow time because um he he was a very unique character a guy that I’ve got a lot of respect for but I can still remember the first time we matched on up on each other and I can still remember Mark Thompson coming to
Me during the week and saying Gary I think you’re going to get Ryan Crowley this week it’s important that you do your homework so I watched a few hours of tape figured out his strs strengths and weaknesses went into the game sure enough he come to me at the first center
Bounce and it would have been about 15 minutes into the first quarter and the the ball went out of bounds it was about to get thrown in and in my peripheral I could see him standing about 2 or 3 meters away from me and I thought okay this is interesting normally he’s right
Up on me he’s hitting me he’s pinching me doing everything he can to put me off the game and so I turned and looked at him he had this big smile in his face and he went on to start telling me that I was the greatest player in the game an
Honor to play me it was honor to play on you it was an honor to play on me there’s no way that he’s going to be able to keep up with me today and I thought this R Crow is not actually too bad anyway we getting into the second
Quarter it would have been about 15 minutes uh into there the the ball went out of bounds again same thing in my peripheral I could see him standing about 3 m away and I turned and had a look again and he had this angry look on
His face and I thought okay I don’t know what I’ve done here and he uh he then went on to tell me I was the biggest cheat in the game hand hand balls around the back and um and I figured out pretty quickly that that was actually a tactic
Of his and I think it worked for him that game we we got beaten and only touched the ball about 15 times but from then on I always I always always looked forward to the battles and as I said he was some that someone that made me a
Better player he was good cop bad coping against that’s exactly right two two brown lows Gary one at jalong in a Premiership year and and one at Gold Coast I mean how proud are you that that you’re able to produce that sort of football for for both of your clubs in
These kind of Stellar season that you had yeah it is special and I mean I think most players will say they don’t they don’t play for these rewards but they are a bonus and we know the hard work that goes into um you know being
Able to play at a high level week in week out and um you know obviously I was able to win a brown L with Jong and then to go up to the go Coast in a very young side and to be able to win one again was
Was very special but I would I would have traded that that brown low in to have more success at the Suns but as I said earlier I’m really hoping it by all reports sounds like they got the right people in place and they’re heading in the right direction and be nice to see
Them have some success in the future could have got a couple more Brown if we four five four five in four K I think you was fa in well this is a stat that’s actually interesting the most Brown low votes in the history of the game that man right over
There so under deniably you know the the a darling of the umpires right um I tell you who definitely thought that umpires love you was Luke Hodge Luke Hodge here he absolutely thinks look here he is he grabs you and it’s clearly a free kick right clearly a free kick but according

Know how hard it is to play this game at this level and you see him do those sorts of things is it is it mindblowing to see the stuff that he could actually do absolutely and and you know he was someone that was able to do it we in
Week out over a long period of time and and in my opinion that that’s what a champion of the game is is not just someone that has a good year or two but someone that’s able to play at that high level over you know over a 10e period
And and and DB was someone that was able to do that um obviously didn’t have this team success that he would have liked but um you know he did tell me in the end it did end his career that’s why he retired at the end of 97 four grand
Finals by the way if your brother Nathan had kept going you’d be down to number three and also also your Uncle Jeff one a few grand final Sprints so hey you are like we’ll get to Nathan in a moment but there one thing about there was a

Kind of head go and how do you know that you’re just going to be able to shake off these people and work your way through this sort of stuff yeah I believe this is one of the real strengths of my game is Just understanding angles and timing and and
Um I worked a lot in the gym on my core as well but um you know that that that helped me helped me play the game you know at the level that I did um watched a lot of tape as I mentioned earlier you know wanted to learn from different
Players and I think that’s part of the reason why I was able to go on and have the career that I did I was really big on doing research used to research different diets recovery methods um but as I said also watch tapes on players that I really respected if there’s a
Particular skill that I wanted to learn and a player did it well well then I would learn how to do it right and then go practice it on the training there any diet you could recommend to um I’ve done a lot of research and have not found
One so let me tell you again Sam Sam mentioned your brother played 21 games in 07 member of the Premiership went inside and then just as we was getting used to the idea that there was another abet on the scene and who knows where he
Was going to be was sort of he opted out how good could he have been if he had been if he had been able to cope with everything how good could he I think he would have gone on to have a very good career I really do believe that I think
He retired at the age of 23 um and it was it was a shock to a lot of people when he when he made that decision but I think Nathan felt at that time that um that’s not what he wanted to do with his life he had some other passions that he
Wanted to invest his time into and um yeah I I can still remember getting that phone call and I was a bit shocked myself but I I really just wanted to support that decision and um obviously he he he um returned and played a couple
Of games for for the Suns but we we have a very close relationship now we talk all the time and um he’s in a really good place and he’s happy and that’s the main thing the spotlight obviously wasn’t for Nathan uh Tia your dad was quite different by the way he was more
Than happy to make himself available to the media uh anywhere any time well Gary your second Grand Final you must be looking forward to next week yeah jar it’s great to be back um in a grand final how’s the bar it’s beautiful and hot okay enjoy it and turn it on for us

The younger group and to Captain that group as well um was very appealing for me um was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make in my life to leave a club that i’ supported my whole life and had so much success at um and a
Lot of people ask me now if I had my time again would I change anything and I don’t think I would because I think that time up there you know re really helped my growth as a person and my growth as a leader um and again although we didn’t
Have success on field that we would have liked I truly believe I left that club in a it was h [Applause] was it not at the time it was huge news and every aspect of the community got involved and some had something to say on the issue whatever you like Sam it’s
Sad he’s been so good just don’t think it’s right I’m a rich man and I don’t want him to go the decision was spilled on both sides of politics I think Gary’s making a mistake I think he’ll realize that mistake in a couple of years time

To him um just because you know I felt like you know obviously playing in Grand Final being a captain um you know I didn’t want him to have to focus on anything else um but he said to me no I really want to do this um it would mean
Mean a lot to me and um and when I told Jordie about it she was in tears and so to be there on that day and um you know to to be able to experience that with my family and the boys and we we weren’t
Sure how Levi um you know was going to handle a stadium full of people but he had a smile on his face the whole time he loved it and um I was just so glad the boys went on to win that and um so got to become a Premiership Captain yeah
Absolutely some stuff so you know your family’s really committed to helping out other families of course and there’s a we mentioned earlier there was a a very special football piece of memorability that is going to be auctioned off to help people out can you tell us what it
Is yeah so um I’m going to be auctioning off my uh 2009 Premiership jumper which was a uh which was a really hard decision to make but um you’re right my wife and I we started a foundation uh about two years ago um with three main focus areas being mums and babies highly
Vulnerable children we also fund water and sanitation projects Y and uh I spoke spoke to Jordy about it the plan was to pass the jumper down uh to our kids but we decided that we would auction it off and and try and raise some funds to uh
For a cause that’s really close to our hearts um so the funds from from from the jumper will be going to compassion Australia and it’ll be going towards U moms and babies uh programs you’re a superar um and you know I think with with the journey that Jordy and I have
Been on with Levi and um you know just the care of received the access that we have you know to to the the the Specialists and the hospitals um you know to to to know that you know moms and babies in in uh living in poverty um
You know the first year of a child’s life is so critical to survival we just felt we needed to do something about that and that’s why we set up the foundation and and um and we’ve love working closer with compassion and and hopefully we can we can raise funds that’s
Amazing so it’s I mean that is an incredibly magnificent uh thing that the family doing we can bid now that that that um website now is live to take bids for that jumper the 2009 jumper one of the most famous Jumpers in modern football history to be your that jum that jumper
