Welcome back joined here now by event support Guru at the PDGA Andy Rothchild Andy a lot of rule changes this year the first one that sticks out to me is about the stance I think in the previous Seasons that stance rule that was changed previously was a little

Confusing can you talk to us about what that was before and what we’ve changed it to right so in 2023 the rule for stances was that anything uh within your lie that you’re uh your body can basically reach that’s what you can clear off the playing surface uh but of

Course what one player can reach within their stance or within that lie is completely different from what another player can um you know so if one player is not very height uh or is height challenge shall we say they’re not going to be able to clear as much as someone

Else and when it comes down to it we want players to be able to commit to this throw that they’re uh running up to perhaps in a fairway On a par 4 or something like that so now the rule has changed so that anything that is dead

And unattached still same as before that is further from the target than your lie you can remove from the playing field so if there is a big old dead Branch or something that is in your runup and it can’t quite reach your stance you can still move that now so that’s fair to

All players because now regardless of how long your reach is you can still clear that off of your uh your playing surface I think it’s a fantastic rule I think it clears out a lot of gray areas a lot of things like this feels unfair

To me as a player because I’m 5′ 7 not 6’6 um I I I think this is much better and again safety is a huge deal here in discol footing is already Tough Enough in our sport as it is uh even from teads so I think this is a great rule change

Uh next up though we got to talk about scoring a lot of things have change with scoring and I also like this change making the game a little bit more legitimate yeah well I I love this change as well anybody who uh likes keeping score likes this change maybe

The people who weren’t keeping score so much before aren’t a big fan but that’s why we have this rule change um we had too many people who were not really doing their duty of keeping score in that you know allotted amount of holes that they were supposed to so now we

Just made it so that everybody has to keep score and another big problem that we were running into before was you know if you and I are on a card and I’m keeping score and I put you down for the wrong score and I just submit the scor

Card before you even even have a chance to look at it you would get penalized and that’s not really fair to you because what did you do you just stood there and you didn’t have a chance to even do anything about it so now you only get penalized for a wrong score if

It’s from your own scorecard so you still have to put in a good faith effort to keep score for all players but uh once you’ve turned in your scorecard we’re only really concerned about your score being the accurate one uh because we don’t want you getting penalized because someone else messed up their

Math I’ve seen it happen numerous times and it’s absolutely heartbreaking I’ve seen wins get taken away from players because someone signs the scorecard and runs off off without someone else getting able to being able to check it uh and it’s just tragic and I think again this clears up gray areas and it

Makes it so everyone has to take accountability and now no more saying my phone is dead when it’s your turn to take the score right and it’s uh We’ve made it as easy as it can be if you’re in an event and it has uh pdj digital scorecard being offered if all if

Everybody on the card is using digital scorecard it’s almost impossible to get a a wrong score because it’ll alert you if I put down a three for you and you put down a four boom we’re we’re both going to get a notification that there’s a mismatch on the scorecard and we’re

Going to fix it immediately it’s almost impossible to get it wrong when you’re using digital scorecard and also if you have that one pencil whipping player in your area this eliminates that entire possibility and one more rule you want to talk about uh so many good things

Changing and I again I love everything that you guys are doing right now yeah uh I want to talk about playoffs playoffs are uh changed ever so slightly and what you can do with them we still have sudden death playoffs same as ever um but a cool thing that you can do now

As a tournament director is you can offer an aggregate playoff so I’m sure sometime uh during the season we’re going to see this in a dgpt event where you can offer a playoff that is three holes long and if somebody takes a bogey on the first hole they’re still alive

They’re still playing golf they have a chance to get those Strokes back on that second or third playoff hole um I think a lot of times we see a playoff hole that is I mean we’re all looking for forward to that playoff and then boom it’s over and this adds the potential

For some really good drama where we can watch players uh dig deep and fight back in a playoff and I think that’s a rad thing to S you I I I agree and I think it now gives tournament directors an ability to fine-tune the excitement

Factor of a playoff and to also make it fine-tune for the course that they’re playing on sometimes a sudden death playoff isn’t well suited to a specific course in aggregate playoff especially if you have three or four signature holes you can play that are all within

Flow of each other I think that just makes it so much more exciting

  1. I'm glad some of these rules are cleared up. But I believe my elementary school teacher would argue that the new wording about clearing debris means exactly the same as the old one.
Since it said where you MAY place supporting points and not CAN it had nothing to do with how far you could reach.

  2. That second rules just going to make tournaments take alot longer and everyone has to pay attention to everyone elses game instead of focusing on their own.

  3. I was really looking forward to playing tournaments this year but I’ll probably not be playing any because of that second rule. The fact every single player has to whip out their phone after every single hole is ridiculous. Every player should have a pencil and paper if you want to hold people accountable. What if someone has a finicky phone or what if someone breaks their phone on the course because of this stupid rule….? Is the pdga going to reimburse them for a $1000 phone?

  4. Let's create a rule which basically forces everyone to use an app, and look, we just created an app exactly for that.

  5. So people without phones, or the money to pay for data are just out of luck and shouldn't play? Also, great app. I see it worked wonderful today without any issues at all! -.-

  6. it sounds like an good idea that we all take score, usually the person taking score is stressed it is only him, and other players are not helpful since they didn't pay attention, and we often get errors, now all players will be focused and help each other, yet it does feel annoying to use pen and paper or a phone, i used small twigs in my pocket last year and now consider using rings on my fingers, or numbers with velcro to stick on your shirt – would be best that somehow the discs do the counting by themselves 🙂

  7. I hate keeping score but I love the new rule change. I have played in tournaments where a couple of buddies kept score and they ended up cheating. Happy they fixed this. Oh cheating, I meant made an honest mistake 😡

  8. Disc caught between bars on the outside of the basket, or hanging on the outside from a protrusion, is a miss and should be treated as such. This is the dumbest rule ever! Properly constructed baskets wouldn't have this problem, so why should flawed ones make it count?

  9. Just use paper and pencil to keep score. I played golf all through middle school and high school and we were all required to keep our opponent’s score as well as our own, and to confirm after the match. It was never a big deal.

  10. i really don’t understand why would anyone give more tasks to players while they are trying to focus on their game. it’s like interrupting them 18 times per round.
