[Applause] everybody welcome to the show it is the thanks to FY unbelievable what a show we have in store for you tonight one of the most spectacular players ever to pull on a footy bir he is going to be joining us here tonight the one and only Peter Knights is
Sam lovely to see you the sharpy people in the audience may have noticed that that is not mck Malloy is Lawrence Mooney everybody nice to be here great to you m a lot of uh a lot of talk about where mix where mix gone why isn’t here do you
Know have you got you know anything about it two words lipos suction is that two words or is it one word I think it’s two words is he what’s he doing well might some people might be expecting some in you know insensitive submarine jokes about Mick and all that and we’re
Not we’re not going to do that we’re not going to do that we’re not doing it no everyone knows that you know Mick wouldn’t go near a sub unless it was foot long with meatballs in no but actually some of our you know more regular viers would know that
Around this time of year our end of financial year Mick does usually go missing if you’re not him mean for tax purposes yes yeah there’s a lot of files import Philip Bay no but I can tell you one thing for sure wherever he is whatever he’s doing he’s going to
Come back with a new story line for White Lotus 3 there you go something to look out for we’ll push on to the best of our ability without him of course uh there’s been a lot of footy to talk about uh throughout the week been a tough week out west for the West
Australians it is they’ve done it real are you referring to the 171 Point loss no Taylor Swift’s not going to per that’s big that’s as if they haven’t suffered enough over there she’s not going Mari tickets today too oh well we got the Taylor Swift I do love Taylor
Swift I’m a big anti-hero fan but but I’m also a bit more Ronda birchmore than Taylor Swift Red Hot and Ronda what a concert Jesus it’s a gold near for scalpers at the moment isn’t it you’ve got your four yeah and you they’ll be they’ll be available for sale they no
They will not no you’ll take anything what do you think I will not no it has been a tough week for the West Coast you mentioned 171 Point loss it’s been incredibly tough and on top of the devastation of this loss of course uh bad news continues to visit itself upon
The John longm kicked six goals himself in that game he did why do they call him horse it’s because of his long face yeah that’s right no no Elliot Yo’s now out of the side San patris su’s out of the side so the injury list just continues
To deepen for them uh it’s a tough TRS and kill to come over this week so we wish them all the very best it’s been it’s hard for the West Coast Eagles there’s some Silver Linings though Mari they’re going through a tough time but at least they’re getting to blood some
Youngsters and we got a look at a footy card of one of their Young Guns this week that’s Yes Yes W hat right W hat is in this week now we wish him all the very best he’s a promising young cold out of the waffle so we did you say
Elliot Ya’s out Elliot y’s out I said I said y you said he’s out yes he is that’s even worse he’s one he’s one of the few players that Adam Simpson actually Knows by the way that’s even worse um a tough week you would have thought so wouldn’t you I mean they
Can’t accept what they dished up against Sydney so they’ve got AIT a bit of a Line in the Sand bring your M what is it bring your mouth of those one of those I would have thought be tough been ferocious we got a sneak peek of uh training during the week too
Go there you go not no not not so much bring your mouth guards as bring bring your bike helmet to training there you go what is that is state of the AR that isn’t it that is terrific what’s forgotten all this gws lost to them that’s a very good point how did that
Happen A Dark Day for the gws joh K out of the league how did that happen finally there’s been a reaction from out west you’re just going to not answer any questions tonight are you I’m just going to move on I’m not on the rundown I’m going to move on um it’s a
Uh how did thaten they finally responded out west the media’s turned the West Australian their state their state master of course who are you going to sack the chief the chair the coach or tick for all of above so they’ve had enough the West australi I don’t want to
See anymore and a group this is fairing a group of influential supporters unbel have said let’s not turn up for the first quarter just don’t turn up until quarter time let the team run out and the team play much like much like their players did against the swans well as
Car supporters you know that not turning up in the first quarter is not a new idea okay you guys actually perfected that exactly they’re stealing our ideas hey um so the fans are they are very very passionate a lot over I know they’re going through a bad time at the
Moment but it wasn’t that long ago that we saw them in full flight by the way after their preliminary final win in 2018 this was the West Coast Eagles fans at their most passionate here we come here [Applause] we they they’re they’re up and about Mari yeah
Look at him have a this is genuine passion this guy this guy’s my favorite yep right at the end dagger in the heart the last one he really boed at home absolutely a special mention to all the people that stuck their tongues out apparent Reas you almost don’t want them ever to be
Successful again when you see that don’t you I mean that is don’t ask me questions that aren’t on the run it wasn’t the only big talking point out of other last of the the bite weekend rounds and this was in the last 10 seconds fantastic game of foot at the
MCG Adelaide Skipper best kick in this side Jordan Dawson cops one high in the last 10 seconds 35 out directly in front umpire isn’t see he finishes the game yeah you got a blood Le split lip and blood pouring out of all over the place
But no free Kick the AFL came out after the game uh sometime later and said no no we actually got it wrong it should have been a free kick to Jordan do which is very uncommon for the offl to come out and do that well that’s true but has
It been talking point ad supporters have been ringing Talk Back Off The Hook 21 free to 12 in that game and I ran into some Crow supporters uh coming out of the game and they felt that they was robbed well a couple of things that I learned there one is that Jordan Dawson
Is the captain of the crows it’s a good takeway I didn’t I didn’t know that I seriously didn’t know that he’s having a very good year yes he is the irees by the way umpire had a very tough decision there pay pay the right choice or have your house burnt down that’s
So uh but yes it’s not by the way not the first time that adelade have been robbed uh in a close game against cywood I’m talking about the 2009 semi-final it was a completely different story for disbelieving Adelaide fans who blamed the Umpire for awarding Anthony the match winning free kick absolutely
The CRS were robbed right in front of me right in front of me you know coincidentally what his parents uh were at the Hindenburg disaster all the humanity right in front of them yes right in front of them he’s unbelievable that was a free kick he had his arm hooked yeah oh the
The yeah of course Brett ruton had his arm Ben ruton had his arm yeah was in 2009 you might want to let it go but uh yeah anyway they were robbed and would get over another close that’s right did you point out that it was not the first time that it’s happened
Against him uh good win for Collingwood they Contin Contin to continue to set the pace at the top of the table along St coming do they no they do not and that is the psychological Edge they’re going to start enjoying teams just wait for them to be tracked and they often
Come at you they do and they did it without Jordan to go this week their match winner and Superstar who’s a couple of weeks away from coming back and his coach Craig McCrae uh this week had this to say about the Collingwood Superstar well I think I think we all
You know stand here seeing Jordy grow in front of our eyes like we we get to see it day to day and um some times when you have a dripping tap it takes a while to get a puddle and yeah he’s been a dripping tap for a while
Now it doesn’t sound like a positive does it it doesn’t sound like a compliment but is that a it’s sometimes you got a dripping tap takes a long time takes a long time to become a puddle yes is is that a real saying it is a real
Saying but um McCrae cut it short there the actual the the full uh saying is a dripping tap creates a puddle and a puddle creates a pool in barley at a full moon Dance Festival and that creates an apology for the media it’s I think it’s l zo might have
Been Crea in the LA said said that the very old text if CR M CR no I’ll tell you one thing I’ll tell you one thing for nothing if Craig mcra C’s going the way he’s heing up in the AFL Hall of Fame segue to the Hall of Fame this week
Which is you what you calling your own Segway just just do the segue and move on the metaphorical crowbar did magnificent induct Again Sam Mitchell Jimmy Bartel Cory en Michael Mark Williams granddaughter of Tommy Le was there and the one and only Bruce mcavaney who they’re all
Magnificent the did the backr boys get inducted into the Hall of Fame well I mean look they’re all special and we congratulate them all but for everybody here at seven of course what a contribution not only to the network has made shout up lawence what a magnificent contribution he’s made not
Only to everybody here at Channel 7 but to the game he’s been superb and and he the best in the business I can only imagine a dream to call with did you ever call with him uh no no you call well you know what he made everyone
Better you should have called with him but um you know he was always there to support his fellow commentator just as a viewer and uh he there was a no better example than he was called with um Amish mlin and Cameron Ling decided to you take things off track a bit have a
Listen to the New Hall of Fame inductee Bruce mcavaney save it at the End Jones is dogger isn’t he oh he’s a good player and uses it well to Zack Jones we know how hard he is Imagine Nathan and Zack Christmas day in a jelly wrestle what really want to imagine that a mud wrestle a game of knuckles that be a good
Contest that’s why he’s the best the master there’s plenty more to come here on the front bar for fthy unbelievable don’t go anywhere it is back it has been too long Sam six Returns on the other side of the break [Applause] the Cornerstone Hotel it’s uh it’s the Cornerstone Hotel
It’s on a corner and it’s made out of stone there you go that’s why they come up it’s a ripping Pub it’s a great Pub how many pubs that I haven’t been to in this town no no uh get involved with the program we have uh we have all of the
Social media platforms covered uh so they are all terrific and uh you can get involved anytime you like we had Gary a Jr on the show last week it was a joy to have him on and he told us about the auction uh money’s race from his 2009
Premiership winning jumper are going to go to compassion Australia uh a c is very close to the abet family’s heart uh there’s 11 days to go for the auction of that jumper it’s t ticked over $40,000 is the a lot of sports memorabilia doing the rounds I want to reiterate that that
Is actually the 2009 good so it’s you know not one of those ones that you can put it behind glass if you want hang it above your your bed do what you like with it but it is the genuine article absolutely actually Ross Lions should probably buy it burn
It so get involved if you are get involved supporting a wonderful cause and a nice little tax deduction before June 32 he’s still involved with the game of course he’s still running around the little Master absolutely uh on the weekend he played for quck Keswick you’re having a real you’re
Having real trouble with that we play forwick the Keswick Saints in the central Highlands League which is a very very fine league in the north west of Melbourne it’s lovely he did he played he kicked a couple of goals good uh the only bit he struggled and but I’ll let
You be the judge I thought that after the game when they singing the song I think the little Master struggled a bit with the words go [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] mother like the weak is of old we’re strong and we’re bold you’re good we prayers Wick red white you had the boom boom boom
Under control didn’t you you got the boom boom boom guy didn’t know the words to his song or the names of any of his teammates so it’s an amazing amazing effort by the little Master hey Lawrence um you’ve known Sam for a long time you two have worked together for for a long
Time yes I taught this BL everything he knows people like I I raised him as my own me him now he’s got a bit of Fame he has wiped me like a dirty butt he won’t take my calls anymore you may be aware of the fact that he’s uh
He’s uh been commissioned to host the Logan I saw the the announcement on the show last week and congratulations it’s massive what do you what do you make of the photo all right sett no no I know everyone’s making light of the photos uh you look great the diet’s working you should eat
Something what do you think of this pH well when he gets on the red carpet and they say who are you dressed by he’ll say Vinnie’s Boutique Vincent deul that one that is out the this is Nick’s particular favorite last week looking look at the disappointment when he
Sees he’s like oh my God at least when I look in least when I look in the mirror there’s a reflection unlike you now I took Sam to his first Lois in 2011 and uh fact he look there you go she pretty blurry photo but that is me
On the right terrible photo I was working with Shane Bourne who was the host of the Lois and in fact this is an interesting Circle if you will Shane Bourne was the last full host of the Logan so they’ve had people present at the beginning and so Sam was at that one
And now he’s going to be the the first presenter or host since afterward that night you you cuz you helped boury you were riding for Bourne yeah and then we were trying to get into the Afterparty at JJ’s at crown and I didn’t have a
Plus one so I said I’ll go in and try and get someone out Sam thought I was going to go in and get the you know PR person from Channel 9 I come out with bony and out he comes and he the host of the
Lois and he he goes up to the woman on the door and he goes uh this is my photographer Sam P then you come Sam and now you’re the host so that’s he um he took me to my first Lois and he’s going to be there for my last one too
By I think it’s going to be Sensational I I just can’t I can’t believe your work on postcards didn’t get you a plus one to that night yes I can’t believe that either have you been to a Loy since 2011 no I haven’t all right you have not there was no incident
I there was have there was no cameras hey um you come on a good night because uh it has hasn’t been there’s a segment on the show that we we occasionally roll in but has not featured in there segments on the show yeah there are and this one hasn’t featured in 2023 so
You’re here on a very special night it’s a joy to announce ladies and gentlemen boys and girls [Applause] that what is Sam six Sam six is I get to show you six clips uh under anything I want under the you know it’s a pretty General so it’s a cut down 20 to1 there’s generally a theme to it though isn’t it there’s a theme there is
And this one is very very topical this week this is uh this is six clips that I that we wanted to show that I wanted to show this year but we ran out of time so I’m showing you tonight beautiful that’s uh that’s as good or Reason all there
You go so no you’re good good so listen number six we’ll get through this don’t worry number uh number six Brendan Godard was a guest on this show earlier BJ now an aid golfer he was playing here in the proam up the Royal Pines in Queensland now to us of course his
Football resume is you know impeccable end and killed but in this brutal World um past achievements guarantee nothing BR the god plus one marker was a much better effort he loves the game Brendan godart I don’t think I’ve met a person that follows the game harder than him think
He was a football or something wasn’t he that’s that’s brutal oh that’s we played 300 games that well that’s Paul G and he knows that brenon God i’ play oh that’s a b tongue and cheek think number cut it that number five yes please gevin wanging was a guest on this show
Recently of course uh the star of Dancing With the Stars is he still in it is he off already I don’t know I would have thought he’d be off but anyway um and we didn’t get a chance to ask him uh about this story where he was reported uh for striking Ben
Duan trouble two for Port power Captain Gavin wangin up before the tribunal wangin was booked for charging bomber Ben Duan wanted to ask him he’s has he he’s he’s being he’s obviously flown he’s flown direct from Russia and um is it he’s obviously being represented by a Russian oligarch that’s the bler runs
Vagner what’s his name yeah anyway I just wanted to we didn’t get a chance to didn’t get a chance to do that one um it’s amazing Vision all right we’re up to number four flying hey commentary commentary this is a two-parter oh good yeah so you’re hold on you said we’re up
To number four we’ve just seen two four a and four b six five okay okay coming yeah number four but it’s a two-parter now you’re an alleged commentator um so it’s important to be unbiased isn’t it well you should try to B yeah absolutely so well someone should have reminded Peter uh Peter
Landy here um about being impartial and just you know staying with his mind on the job this is Peter Landy listen to his description of Richard ld’s effort in 86 but it’s picked up by bakara brilliant Play Short pass to dear LD the hand pass or shocking shocking well shocking oh he’s
A passionate hathorn supporter like I said it’s a two-parter right right um because because part two is Jeff leak in 1978 right yes of course he’s for bomber former bomber Jeff leak’s commentating here in a game in at Windy Hill and he he’ll see Peter Landy shocking and raise him
M conville got in his way K to Ashman again Ashman a hand past to G this is another goal oh you donkey well how about that that was the worst and most pathetic ever I think I’ve ever seen anybody the what’s going on with it the worst and most pathetic I’ve ever seen
He said the donkey donkey and then the worst and most pathetic EP I’ve ever seen mate listen you are still commentating why don’t we have can you can you bring donkey back in like a donkey of the week or something I would love to do that but I wouldn’t I would
Never think dream of doing something like that I could I could watch that forever but we um you knowing this show I don’t think that’ll be the last time you see that clip either hey now listen we had Carl langon on a few weeks invariably when the football from the
West comes up we talk about the waffle and this one here we we didn’t get a chance to show Carl this cuz we ran out of time Mal Brown oh was a coach uh he was coaching South freem Man versus East freem Man fight at fight it caugh a time
Have a look at M by the way left of screen right into it by the way right into it have a look at him there it’s like it’s like it’s like when your geography teacher just snaps you know I me have a look at him that is great he got um he got
Suspended and couldn’t go on the ground so he coached from AER he did it’s extraordinary it’s extraordinary so hey by the way staying in the waffle how many how many you up to oh yeah it’s a good point are we no this is the yeah this is the second this
Up to two up to two that’s how the numbers Works ladies and gentlemen once once you told me it was a countdown I was a cross it yeah will there be a Sam six on Loi not I hope not I don’t think there’s time um
So anyway we didn’t get a chance to show this by the way this is um this is we’re staying in the waffle this is East freem manal David bushel having a bit of a problem with the subco trainer Barry winter wow wi jeez what’s he done he’s pushed in straight over there
Mari winter has gone for the final hurdle and he hasn’t made it they’re going to have to bring out the Hess hey it’s a very very bad sign when the trainer calls for a trainer that’s unbelievable do we know what the backstory is what got Peter P
Don’t don’t ask questions that aren’t on the rundown that is the takeway from tonight number one the last one the last clip that we I wanted to show but we run out of time I’m showing you tonight here we go right you know um I us you know
Back in the day fights were were not only celebrated they were commented uh you know com they could commentate through the fight you know what I mean so this is 985 uh Lou Richards here there’s a fight I think it’s in kilder and Sydney so it’s a magnificent Lou
Richards has a magnificent call of the fight H and luckily Bob skilton was there to let us know what else was happening short past to Paul Mor on the wing goes another pass oh he’s dad will be up the field there’s a bit of a wrestle going on now they’re starting to
Alen up a bit look at this and it’s Paul more they’re punching there grabbing hair and everything Bob The Grudge Match may be on between Wayne Carol they’re all into it oh it’s coming to life in the meantime it’s a go Bobby was Bobby just kept this kept a
Very very strong Sam let it not be not be so long until the next one keep applauding as we go to the break when we come back on the other side of this P nights to join us [Applause] on Welcome Back to the show great to have you with us for 30 unbelievable
Tonight’s guest is a very special one indeed three-time Premiership player Hall of Fame member athorn team of the century genuinely one of the most spectacular players ever to pull on a footy boot please make him welcome the one and only P nights [Applause] everybody thanks for coming on thank you
Lovely to see you you’re well you’re in good Nick I try and exercise for health nowadays uh exercising for Fitness that’s well and truly gone had enough of that over the years but no try and keep well just so we can keep active have to tell you that Lawrence so keep
Active was those of Our Vintage I remember your as a player it was a genuinely spectacular career it started before color TV was around when you were a teenager you could do it all you could kick the freakish goal you had speed to burn you could get it in the air on the
Ground we’re watching you kick a couple of goals here but this is what I remember you mostly As is kind of rebounding Center half back who just took the game off on it was there a role that you preferred end of the ground that you preferred playing at I probably
Um started off bit as a utility cuz I went to the club when I was only 16 so I was really finding my way so the first year year and a half or so I guess I played in just about every position but wasn’t until uh maybe the end of 1970
That I started play center half back and virtually the rest of the 70s that’s where I was at whose idea was that to send you back there oh it was Kangas you know Kennedy that was his idea at I mean that’s that’s where he placed me and
That’s where I felt pretty comfor and wasn’t until really the ‘ 80s when yabby came along that he sent me down the other end it was lot easier as a forward I imagine it would have but also just looking there Peter both sides of the body very fluently um did you always
Naturally kick left and right um in that in that era I I probably didn’t practice my left my my non-dominant but it was so important that you can get out of trouble on your non-dominant side so I was pretty comfortable in doing that but I certainly wasn’t equally as good both
Sides of my body right one a magnificent play was Sam Big Thrill it’s a Big Thrill for us that that you’re here so let’s go way back to the start and some some photos of you as a as a young boy Peter here you’re at school next to the
Uh I think that’s Lee Matthews coaching theam there by the way Drew in high school there you are there you are there what sort of Junior were you you good look I didn’t start playing competitively actually until I was about 13 so like in the under 14s it
Just wasn’t competitions around I just used to kick the footy in The Paddock on the on the farm but that was drw high school and our footy team and uh I don’t think we lost a game it was always easy to beat Teran or beat warle or you we
Did pretty well now this is a very interesting photo cuz you were picked up in 1969 by Hawthorne you’re 16 years of age and so you were driven from druin or long wari yeah to Glen fery oval by this woman Mrs PL yeah the the local legendary Taxi Driver yeah she was a
Legend actually and for two years she’d picked me up at drwan High School uh at about 330 quart to before there’d be a brown paper bag on the seat there full of sandwiches that was in the brown paper bag hey you you weren’t a Calon play that’s why I mentioned brown paper
Bag cuz I knew you C boys I understand what but hour and a half to get down to Glen fery she’d sit there and watch the training and we’d finish about uh I suppose I’d get out about 8:00 and about 9:30 that night we’d get back to Long
War said twice a week for two years to did unbelievable a followup question did you ever do a runner no no no no not at all never even never even thought about it Z I bet Mrs pluk could move too she have you by the Scruff think about all the people that
Um add up to make a career for a young kid growing up in the bush and you don’t often think about people like a Mrs PL but you would never have got there had it been for her no in my first two years I came to Hawthorne when I was in year
10 and then again in year 11 so that’s why I was getting a taxi to go backwards and forwards to training my father he’d get a milker on a Saturday night night he’d take me down to and and my mother take me down to games on a Saturday and
Then Dad would take me down again on the Sunday morning so for two years I did that then Kennedy said look I think you’re going to be here at Hawthorne for a while in your third year I think you better come to Melbourne because school needs to be taken seriously not that I
Took it all that seriously at any time anyway a Wast of time so I then moved to Melbourne and barded with a family in melbour after that time well pet they knew what they were uh bringing down to Melbourne because you had exceptional Talent it was that first year I think in
1971 that you made your first State team as a teenager and Peter Landy the legendary one caught up with you to have a chat about it new addition to the Victorian team to for on set half back Peter Knight Peter first of all congratulations on your selection thanks very much thank you now
When did you hear about it uh last night uh about 10 dad rang me up from home um he’d been listening to the radio and he rang up and I was surprised as ever that was the first I knew about it then you’re still attending school yes yeah
Still cwell at um just down here yeah so Peter that’s amazing you make the stat side uh at 18 years of age my question is what about the mutton chops there how the hair is actually I think it was because I was in my final year of
Schooling I came to camwell high to do my final year and think short back and sides are on there because most of the time the hair was long the mut shops were there so that was a great era Peter Landy went on to Peter Landy went on to describe that interview as shocking
Yes he did yes he did Pete we’ve saw the highlights before uh your marking was your feature that became the Hallmark of your playing days as a kid were you just one of those kids that jumped on things and jumped over things were you were you forever doing that yeah I was always
Getting into trouble at home on the farm swinging from the rafters falling down and breaking a wrist but I used to love climbing trees and but I I was always athletic and I used to love the high jump at school the long jump so athlet Athletics was always always a favorite
Of mine so in footy I mean I was never going to be big and strong so I had to use my strength which was athleticism so three times Mark of the year and the prizes back then weren’t the same as now you didn’t didn’t get a car or a big
Cash prize no but I got a mark rayan kerosene heer you the Mark R there was another another year I got a a what was called a numero lounge chair which was all a one piece rubber lounge chair which was good in the shed at home was what about the third year what
Like a polio vacation what was it color TV started to come in then it was a color tvos I just like to say to the kids at home that’s right we used to set fire to keros sorry sorry for the global warming we used to do that that’s true that’s
You light the wick remember you had to light the wick and inside the fumes were all like good though insane what about what else did you brick we had brickets at our joint you used to have brick heater brick heer heat the hot water absolutely remember brickhead hot water
PE Let’s talk about one of the great rivalry fantastic no the marks the marks oh oh yes don’t worry I’ve read The Rundown so 1978 you win the Premiership that year you you miss out on the brown Low by one vote you’re at the peak of
Your form your 10th season and you’re up against the 24 game Junior by the name of Paul Vander and what a showdown it was round 11 1978 who do you think to took the chocolates that day Pete was it I always I always tell Vander that we
Won the game so obviously the center half back must have defeated the center half forward but but V good M of mind and can I send him best wishes cuz I just heard last night at the hall of fame he’s had a fall broken his leg and
He’s pelvis so Vander if you’re watching all the best mate I’m sure you’ll be back swinging the golf club pretty soon must have slipped on a must have slipped on a cigarette pet you said that Sam no he’s all but he was similar style to me
You know he just he was very athletic so we just had a bit of a shootout on this particular day and went for our marks and uh yeah fortunately we won and people still talk did you know that was a special day as the quarters unfolded
Not really but look I I knew I was coming up against this new upand cominging Champion so obviously I had established myself as a center half back so the challenge was there to knock off this young upart and put him back in his box but we ended up in fact the week
Prior to that game we played in the State game for Victoria against wa I was Senter half back and and he was Center half forward and then we come against each other the next week uh but again I’ll say yeah I won the contest no doubt about that three time
Premiership player twice you knocked over the Kangas are the third time 83 you got hold of the bombers in that amazing rivalry some of the highlights that you gave us in these Grand finals particularly the north games this Mark was iconic it was seen all over the
Place the goal my big your part and the market take after this we this was on posters and the channel 7 footy openers for years and 83 Peter I’m K to ask it the North Melbourne games were reasonably tight yeah ESS and you got hold of them did you enjoy that because
The game was done and you could celebrate and save it while you’re out there yeah well this year obviously is a 40-year reunion of that particular game ID and supporters would know that I’m sure I was at that game we lost by 83 points you do remember it well uh it was
Certainly one of the finals that we played in that we could start celebrating or enjoying the game not celebrating but enjoying the game but as you know when you’re playing in those games you just want to get better and better and get the margin out wider and
Wider so it was just a a good game great game in the end and uh one and a tough game too well certainly to start with because again Idan were coming up the baby bombers were starting their form was really good so I know Lee was
Captain and I was Vice Captain and yabby said to us before the game we had to set set the scene we had to attack the ball we had to show some aggression and and physically intimidate the young bombers and Lee and I clashed actually at the
Start of the game we ran into each other and that sort of set the pattern for what we needed to do at the start of the game I reckon there would have been one of your old teammates who would have loved that sort of um that sort of
Challenge would have been Peter KMS can you take us back to 76 and the emotions that surrounded the Premiership win that year yeah well it started in 75 obviously because we were coming up against North Melbourne and kmo was almost selected he’d been up and down
With the with the cancer that year and we all thought that he was going to get selected in the 75 grand final but one of Kennedy’s favorite saying is there’s no sentiment in football and certainly that showed where he wasn’t selected so we got thrashed by North Melbourne
Whether that had anything to do with or not that kma wasn’t playing I’m not sure but as history tells 12 months later we got the chance to play against the Kangas again and by this stage kmo was pretty crook um and some of some hadn’t seen him for several weeks we didn’t
Really know how sick he was but we knew that he wasn’t too good and all as Kennedy did prior of that game was really just read out a telegram at that stage from crio saying you know it’s going to be the toughest 120 Minutes of your life I’ll ride every bump with you
All the way good luck signed the little fellow that was the only motivation that was needed after it’s being thrashed by North 12 months earlier in the Grand Final in a really un Hawthorn like manner but we’ve won the game and then of course after we finished at the
Social club and Glen foval celebrating we then um went back to croen and uh half a dozen of us that were pretty close to crio got him out of bed uh he was just a a human skeleton at that particular stage he put a wig on and he
Relived every kicked Mark handall off the game for probably the next two hours and then exhausted about 2:00 a.m. in the morning he went off to bed and uh that was the last we saw of him and as we know he passed away about 48 hours
Later what a photo what a what a what a memory to have to be able to hang on to well to this day it’s known as Kos cup and any induction that I I do at the footy Club you know there’s photographs of crio in the boardroom the gymnasium
Is a Peter kman gymnasium our best and fairest is known as the criman medal so all of our players and staff at the club they understand what Peter kman stands for you have the legacy of kmo his determination his courage Never say die so his legacy will always be a part of
The world absolutely yeah to early at the tender age of 28 too uh which is hard to Fathom two years later you’re in the the Grand Final again 78 you win the the Premiership and uh it’s just another Sensational win I suppose again for crio and the celebrations this time are different um
This time you uh get the the Winner’s medal and um can you explain to me what you’re doing here please I think I was looking for a math guard because uh what was it doing down there well when I was having a shot for goal or a quarter time I didn’t want any
Rosin to get on my mouth guard and the safest spot is down the front of your pants didn’t you realize that Lauren no well it is that’s the safest spot for it so sure I hadn’t lost it but I can’t remember that did I really put the metal
Down in front of my pants I think in those days they didn’t have a ribbon for the medal it was just given to you in a a box so yeah correct you probably wanted to for a jog with the cup you were very the haon footing Club of
Course was very good at celebrating uh Premiership wins by this stage I imagine this is back at Linda kesen I’m I’m guessing you go back to the Social Club you gret your fans and here you are as a group you know the players committee and putay them a name and Lou Matthews there
And Johnny Hendry El martello there you are in your choo choo train jumper uniform of course can I just ask where the cho cho train jumper came from was it a home nit or I me we all we all had this bet I guess who could have the
Most outrageous jumper on I think and especially for Grand final day that that seems like a good jumper clear I’m sure the people back in the social club would have appreciated it by the way I just want to take this opportunity just just judging on that for it’s the celebrations of the 1976
Premiership that uh actually I think they wared a closer look 1978 so it’s time now for uh it’s time now for this oh no okay all right what is going on well it’s the front bar analysis doesn’t come out often pety have come on a good night
And uh if we just go back will there be some questions for Peter as part of questions for uh Peter there’ll be questions for you guys there’ll be probably some questions for management as to how this went to a listen I want to just can we play that
Uh that clip again of the celebrations I just want to play that clip again if you don’t mind here we go and stop the tap well done good right done bit over the top it’s a fair spread isn’t it and I only only in hawthor where they say
Come and celebrate the Premiership but bring a plate and so Peter this is what this is we’ve been obsessed with this all week all right you were there so you know it’s pretty special have a look at this spread right so you got two you got
The potato salad there look at those you just want to dive into them don’t you Fe you do uh we’ve got now what’s this thing here with the cherries that I’d say a ham and with your your glass a cherry for decoration fair to say Peter I think absolutely what’s with
The cherry and the ham I don’t understand I think it’s purely for Aesthetics Sam so let’s move on okay I the front s the front left the Cherry the Cherry pav can I ask Cherry pav here the Cherry Cherry it would have been you would have loved been there tonight uh
Mario because there’s a cherry pth there and there’s another one over here that’s amazing too Cher Two Cherry unbelievable you like your cherry PS is that a pav cheesecake can we have some time outet Peter Peter is it a cheesecake or a pav
I think it’ be a pav I don’t like PS but I’m interested in the candleabra in the middle of the table thing here you love that inside that was I think that had something to do with that function yeah but it had a mass a beautiful trifle in there so it was
Right if we I could just um pause for a moment oh the whole thing’s paused Lawrence cuz uh this this is not going anywhere I noticed that your pointer is half a pool qu where’s the other half I don’t know where the other half is but I know where this
Half ask for a bit more clarification I can see a committee man putting in some big ground right there there’s a bit going on there what about now this this has been Peter this has been the talk of the front bar office this week this this
Dish here I think lots of lots of conjecture about what it is well somebody talk crazy talk that it was a Gourmet Pizza it’s 1978 it’s an egg salad isn’t it an egg salad I I can see prawns in there or am I going crazy well I’m going to go with
You Peter cuz you were there you were there at this magic remember that was an salad this one here looks like some sort of salad here probably like a lettuce and cucumber and avocado and no no no Sam avocado wasn’t eaten in Australia before 1988 that is all right what else we
Going so I’ll tell you what they’ve made some I’ll finish with this been some big misses here and you know you were there you could have f this y there’s no egg egg Curry sandwiches there’s no uh let me there’s no party pies there’s no party pies there’s no there’s no um
There’s no little boys there’s some big boys up the back little boys the little boy the little the little boys the little Sav there’s no Cabana with the little blocks of cheese there’s some big misses here this looks like this looks like a beautiful uh like everyone’s done a dish
From the women’s weekly cook we bring a plate we’ll bring a plate but anyway right uh what do you reckon should we leave it there yeah I we should probably [Applause] leave don’t go anywhere there’s moreing on the other side of The that’s kns have special guest that’s him the blonde look what he’s doing to a teenager this is actually disgraceful what Knights does to a young Steven San on this afternoon in 1985 the kid basically still at school he doesn’t have a body to play at AFL level yet and
Peter Knights kicks nine goals on him Pete Are you ashamed of yourself for for treating a teenage boy the way you treated Steven SV on this occasion no definitely not I think you know team of the century full back I’m sure he had a lot lot of other things to look forward
To later on but uh one of the great things about playing over 17 years you’re playing a lot of great players and he was obviously one of them even though he just starting and is it true that you played against you would have played against his old man Serge early
In your yeah my my first year I think was Serge’s last year and my last year was Stevens’s first year so over 17 years to play on a father and son or not play on them but certainly against them in the same team hey that’s all fine but
What about that spread of food mate hey um you were Co you were coached by some some of the Giants of the game I wonder whether anything they did uh prepared you for your entree to the coaching ranks as the coach of the brisman Bears arguably the toughest job
A coach in the history of the leagues ever had did you know what you were signing up for when you took this job on um look probably I knew it was going to be challenging I didn’t think it’d be quite as challenging I knew it was going
To be exciting I didn’t think it was going to be as exciting as it turned out to be um look given the opportunity who wouldn’t want to take an opportunity and I was only like second year out of uh being retired I was an assistant coach
At Hawthorne in 86 so it was only my second year away from playing but given an opportunity to start up a new club from scratch um who would knock that opportunity back and and I certainly didn’t when how how long did they give you to get W once they you know we our
Our period of time was pretty long Sam we had five months five months five months you didn’t have a list you didn’t have a ground no and you had five months to put a a new club into an old competition well I know when shano Sullivan who was
Going to be our general management footy when he me and said would you be interested and I asked a couple of questions like um who are some of the players we’re going to have like it’s only 5 months away from the new season starting he said uh we haven’t got any
Players yet uh what’s our gy going to look like we haven’t got a gy where’s our training base so we don’t have a training base yet where’s our home ground going to be well we don’t know I mean really considering it was 5 months out what had to be put together
In that 5 months was remarkable and and especially the to Sho and the guys that actually went up there you know Jim Su our footy manager Mark McLure our assistant coach and then some of the players Mark miin Mark Williams Jeff Reigns Philip wal Brad Hardy I mean
Those guys did a fantastic job you know we won six games in that first year second year we won seven third year we won eight was a real bad effort when the media said we’re never going to win a game and of course the queenslanders
Were very keen to get to know you so of course the mandatory profile ends up on a news story and uh this is football professional and laner knights finds little time for anything else but when he does you’ll usually find him pounding the running tracks around his toong home
Keeping his well tanned body fit his other love is the Brisbane Bullets basketball side he never misses a match yeah so it could be your Tinder profile there but they actually describe you as a self-confessed loner uh a man with a well tan body and a basketball fan
Fanatic which is true fanatic um have you still got the well tan body do you work on the tan much I mean I’ve hardly got a body L know being well tan but look we went up there and we were like in a foreign land uh the media gave us
Nothing we got hardly any corporate sponsorship like rugby league Rugby Union basketball baseball they’re all we were unknown so whatever little bit of PR we could get we had to grab it and if the coach has got to do that to grab a
Bit of PR so be it no see you win your first two games you mentioned 6 S8 your first three years but you win your first two you beat North at the MCG then round to you go anab beat J longa kid inia park that’s that’s a football miracle
That you’re able to do that yeah look again credit to those that were involved at that stage but I guess you can achieve something over a short period with plenty of adrenaline something to prove and there was no stopping us that night against North meln in round one of
1987 the only thing that stopped you was the theme song Would we had the him sheet that’s amazing sing from she but us uh people down in Melbourne shivering through winter saw a different kind of crowd too up at carara on the Gold Coast uh very sunny and of course pixie skat and
Christopher skates who basically owned the club you wearing sunnies that’s cool a mother and daughter team there and I don’t know what that blows up to but uh what a pioneer of the midrift top it was just it was a different CR doing by the
Way I don’t know cool down take your top off no he wants to get a bit of sun on the gut nothing wrong with the gut Sam all right look spending winter up in Queensland you could do a lot worse it was magnificent up there win Peter in uh
This is a this a footage we’re going to show you here that we anyone who was there this day we always show them including Simon Beasley who had the kick in round seven in 19 1988 Simon Beasley with a shot for goal after the saen to
Win the game you were the coach of the time so much so you decided to actually come down and just stand behind Simon what what are you doing like a bit of Overkill did you really need to stand behind him one of the police one of the
Police was on the mark anyway um what were you thinking here Peter well I was thinking that if he kicks this we’re going to lose if he misses it we’re going to win I think that was the closest of the score I think this might have been the game where um Cameron o’
Got Michael Richardson on his shoulders to try and stop the goal from going through which wasn’t a worry anyway and after that that was banned you couldn’t do that anymore put a guy on your shoulder in the in the Square was the writing on the wall a bit that nobody in
That crowd identified you as the senior coach it was just like playing country footy I mean at carara that that was the whole scene it was just like a big country footy match um but in the sunshine that goal ire was never going to pay a goal the bck are trying to kick
A goal with that crowd I mean it was pretty difficult challenge you you attempting to smother it wouldn’t have helped I thought about it I to get on the ground but it wasn’t necessary there a lot of stories out of that time and factal fiction this is one that I
Remember as a young joury covering the game factal fiction were there was there some players up there that you were just not allowed to drop yeah that’s true about the second year uh it was said to us that there’s about four players that are assets we don’t want them running around in the
Qafl under no circumstance should they be dropped and it really wasn’t a problem for the majority of them I mean it was Mark mckin our Captain Mark Williams Roger Merritt um Brad Hardy and caps was the other one caps was the only one that war kapper lost a bit of form
And bit of confidence and we needed him to go back and play in a local competition and I suppose when I did that when I went against the owners that was the beginning of the end for me so did you get the phone call how did you
Know that there was uh unhappiness about that decision well I actually I actually tracked Christopher skates down over in Spain at that particular stage I got on to him overseas oy so I got on and and he actually understood the game a little bit and when I explained it was so important for
W to go back and regain his confidence and his touch he said go ahead so I guess I went over the CEO’s head at that particular stage and as I said once I did that um I was on the way out well you mentioned that Christopher knew a
Bit about the game I’m not sure the same could be said about other key administrators and members of the board who were up at the club at that stage and once the time was up and you received your marching orders part of your uh presentation to the media
Announcing that you days as coach were over uh went like this very frustrating to talk or try and talk about things such as that when they just don’t understand football a big emotional day when the axe finally Falls my question is why did you go dressed as Stephan
Edberg well was about a week about a week or so after the the sacking actually and I can’t answer that at all no no you’re a free man again that time of the year in the sunshine why not enjoy it I had to work on that tan that you were talking about beautiful
Peter you’re one of the alltime great natural footballers a super player for a super footy club uh the might Hawks of course and it’s been a joy to have you on the show just before we let you go Friday you’re going to be celebrating uh the contribution made to the game by
David Parkin both at Hawthorne and Cartman what a contribution he’s made if you want to go along you can stand that QR code but what a what a contribution he’s made I hear it’s going to be a hell of a spread it’s going to be uh
