Hi I’m Jay Kelly, welcome to my channel Jay Kelly Golf. This YouTube channel is designed to help you play better golf with easy to apply drills for your golf.

I mainly specialise in long game coaching. I look to provide you with some breakdowns and areas to search for in your game.

I understand not one drill will help the same issue so I look to dive deeper into what you can mechanically look for.

I want to help you play better golf so I will be providing topics on all areas of your game such as how to help fix your slice, fix your hook, hit the ball further and striking the golf ball better.

If you enjoy my channel, please make sure you hit subscribe and also hit the notification bell. This way you are always notified when I release new content.

Thanks for watching!

So allowing that left knee to actually release it will feel like I’m getting a bit lighter and that knee is rotating around and in on Itself hi everyone and welcome back to my channel in today’s video I’m going to be talking about how I can help senior golfers perhaps hit the ball a little bit further now I’m was tasked with this video from a member of our Golf Club who asked me that question how would I help

A senior golfer hit the ball a little bit further now that is an open-ended question for sure because it is down to each individual but there are a few common things I see um and that I really think could help so of course the first

Thing we normally see is a lack of turn and I get a lot of people that come to me and say Jay I just can’t turn anymore please don’t ask me to turn anymore I can’t do it um I don’t think I’m able to

Suit now in a lot of cases that could be true but what I do see is students that actually stop using their lower half okay so they set themselves up and into the back swing they would make some swings that where they don’t really move their legs their arms are the dominant

Pieces to the swing and that’s when things feel quite snatchy and out of sync for sure but from a face on point of view here the legs wouldn’t move much the shoulds shoulders would turn as much as they can which let’s just say it’s around 20 30 degrees of shoulder turn

With a little bit of hip turn so the arms don’t actually travel very far now there is no secret for the ball to go further um or pick up Club head speed we nine times out of 10 need the club head to travel a little bit further in the

Back swing for us to be able to generate enough speed in the down swing to effortlessly find some power so it is actually okay for the for the right hip to turn it would be okay for the right leg to actually turn out the way of

Itself so from a hip motion it’s also okay for them to turn probably a little bit more than you’d think now again I see a lot of people trying to increase turn but they forget that they’re able to move their hips so from a setup here

It’s okay for this left knee to actually start rotating a bit more inwards so allowing that left knee to actually release it will feel like I’m getting a bit lighter and that knee is rotating around and in on itself Now by that knee actually rotating I should get a little bit more

Out of my hips because this has freed up and turn my hips can turn a little bit more and because my hips have turned a little bit more they will also carry my shoulders a little bit further so actually as I start to make some swings

Now and turn that knee my right hip will move out the way a little bit more easily and I can feel my shoulders turning a lot more if I let that knee stay locked and still so for example to make this a bit more obvious I’m actually going to feel like I’m pressing

It outwards and try and turn I feel very very restricted I don’t feel like I can get into that right hip and I certainly can’t turn my shoulders now when we turn our hips and we turn our knees turn our shoulders it’s important to understand that to make a solid contact we still

Need to have our weight moving forward into the downswing and some common mistakes I see here are as the player would start to release the knees and hips and shoulders they would try and get everything over their right side trying to turn as much as they can onto

That right leg and there’s a difference between turning into the right leg and turning over the right leg so for me I would want you to feel that as that knee rotates as that hip rotates and the chest rotates I can feel there’s a little bit of pressure in that right hip

Right ankle I don’t need to have a massive sway over here because something we do know is that to make decent contact we need our bodies to be somewhat ahead of the golf ball so anywhere between 3 to 7even in ideally for a nice downward blow with a with an

Iron that’s off the floor so if I can make sure that I’m not four or five Ines behind it I won’t have seven or eight to travel back in the downswing so again making some fills like as I have released that left knee um release the

Hips a little bit more that I do just feel like I’m doing that a little bit more Central for me as I’m turning that it certainly feels like my hips are moving a little bit more forward but all of a sudden now the club is traveling a

Lot further now please bear in mind that it’s only if you can do that I would explore these things slowly see if you can get a little bit more range of MOT out of those movements but that should be the first thing also setup is a big one that I see

This will also Aid some extra range of motion so when the feet are set very square like this that makes the knees Point more internal putting some blocks on how I turn into that right hip and you can try that yourselves I would say do this very

Very slowly but Point your feet inwards and very gently just work to the top and see how far you can go now I know for me I can feel a restriction up that up that right shin up that right hip and I can’t actually move so if I actually turn my

Feet more outwards I’ve opened up the Shins opened up the knees opened up the hips and I can start to turn a little bit more free and I would say that I wouldn’t be closed off to a player feeling like if they can’t move that their right hip

Or that right shoe is more open and to exaggerate some more turn out of that hip you can also drop it back a little bit so if I got my right shoe open and behind that gives me a much larger range of motion when it comes to hip turn

Again and then from there you can certainly hit a few shots where you feel there’s a little bit of weight on your left side and then you’re turning now I’ve got this right hit more open and then hitting some not my straightest one but um you get

The idea there too now my second speed tip would actually be understand that it’s okay for the club head to win and I did this more recently with a student who definitely couldn’t turn so this was for the student that we couldn’t get any more turn out of him and we also

Understood that we needed more Club Ed speed and he was a um squash player so he was very very good with his hands so this isn’t going to work for everybody but I helped him load and unload his hands much better so I got him understanding that he could only swing

To here but if he loaded and unloaded his hands he could really get some good whip of the club head okay so from here actually using his hands a little bit more gave him that extra Club head speed so a little more unique for sure but it

Definitely helped he was a good sports person um previous to golf and actually just helping him load unload and use his hands I think in the industry at the moment we’re taught not to use our hands and we have to turn as much as we can

For the ball and that is a little bit unrealistic to think that we can all turn through the ball like Dustin Johnson it’s important that you do allow the hands to work a little bit more so for me that is how I would certainly help somebody um get the club traveling

A little bit further from a rotation point of view if I had a player that couldn’t rotate and I wanted to increase it even more what I would say is I’d start to let them lift the arms more so a little more than I’d like but I’m not

I’d prefer rotation if I could but allow the arms to lift at the end of the day we’re trying to get the club head to travel a little bit further and if we have to do that from the arms then so be it now the only thing I’d be careful

With if we’re going to start swinging with our arms it’s going to make the club travel down a little bit steeper into the ball and that’s going to encourage potentially a few pull shots and maybe some fade shots but as long as we have the club face a little bit

Square and we don’t have it too hooded and trying to swing up our arms you should be absolutely fine so again from here if they wasn’t that great a turning try and turn as much as they can but let the arms travel more vertically and they

Can swing a little bit more up and down on the ball without too much force so allow the arms to travel upward and downwards now I can definitely feel that that was a little bit steeper into the ball but providing their weight distribution is good enough

That should really help as well so there are just a few ideas around how a senior golfer could increase some Club Ed speed from a rotation point of view and using their arms hopefully these situations or ways um don’t don’t feel like you’re going to get injured or um or you should

Be able to move a little bit more freely from there so I hope that video made a lot of sense um and I’ll see you soon

  1. Excellent explanation and demonstration Jay on how Senior Golfers can Gain More Speed! As a senior golfer, I was very intrigued at what you are proposing. I liked the idea of "flared" feet at set up and bringing the left knee in on the takeaway. Your recommendation of making the hip turn into the right leg and not past it is good one as was the lifting of the arms in the backswing when they are at about hip level. This is something I try to do and as you warned, it does sometime lead to a steep return to the ball. Well Done Jay! I have decided to subscribe to your channel and check out your library.

  2. This may sound contrary to some instructions but I gained more control and distance by shortening my backswing. I’m 67 with chronic back and hip problems. I’m definitely squaring the club head at impact with much greater consistency.

  3. Personally, I think focusing on quality of impact makes a huge difference. It's hard for seniors to generate more club head speed without a lot of work, but ball strike quality is easier to achieve, and working with your team I feel I've achieved that, and only then have I focused on swing speed changes.
