Piedmont Men’s Basketball v. Covenant (2/15/24)

We welcome you to the second game of this double header matchup with your pedmont men’s basketball and the visiting Covenant Scots my name is Chloe bradin with me Grant Prather and Adam Cook on camera all a part of Danielle peral staff with a pedmont athletic Communications it’s going to be a good

Game today Lions needing to prove something currently on a four-game win streak trying to make it five meanwhile covenants have gone 0 and 11 in all conference games we’ll bring you the starting lineups for the game I’ll start off with the away lineup for Covenant number 13 Logan Pearlman number 30 Pier

Smith number zero David comp compare number four Gus hood and number 23 Jessie kard and for pedmont number one Joe helenbrook number four no rear to number five Ryan Jolly number three fiser Darden and number 31 Devin Dean both teams lining up very important game the penultimate game of the regular

Season the lions at home tonight and will be at home once again on Saturday against Berea College we’ll start off with the Scots having the ball just had a match up with the lady Lions who beat marville who are also known as the Scots but now talking about the Scots of CET

Who have the ball right at the top of the key feeds it over to the man outside for three hot start for Covenant that’s David compare with the three-point shot now Ryan Jolly who leads the CCs in all of scoring trying to make something happen also high up in the leaderboard

When it comes to assist Noah Reen who’s been hot off the press this season fiser Garden had a breakout year inside the paint over to Joe helenbrook who’s going for three but doesn’t match would compare so now Gus Hood somewhat local from rer Gap Georgia Hood with the ball once again

Over to ker back to [Applause] compare over to Logan Pearlman up for three and won’t make it two in a row though out of bounds last Touch by Ryan Jolly a good start so far a fast start for Covenant they’ve definitely been good on the offensive end trying to

Spread the floor L and get some three-point opportunities and obviously paid off the first time for compare now we see compare looking to go for three opts to go inside over to Pearlman trying to make something happen is Gus Hood at the top quick movement a lot of Team Basketball here with 5

Seconds left on the shot clock the three-point shoot goes shot goes up goes out 20 seconds now on the shot clock another three-point shot up touches the backboard and will go out on Covenant off of Gus Hood tried to plead his case but does not go in his

Favor so there will be Noah Reen to start us off over to Ryan Jolly who typically will bring us over the timeline as he does now no points for the Lions just yet we’ll see Reen go for a three-point shot try and change that and he does tie ball

Game seeing some high court press here from the Lions Reen defending Hood seeing lots of movement lots of cutting but nothing to speak for now compare 15 seconds on the shot clock with the ball again over to Gus Hood wanted to go for three opts to cut

Inside now inside again kard kard with an opportunity two seconds left goes up and off the red trim of the rim fiser Darden the breakout sophomore is number one in the CC yes gets fouled there number one in the CCS with three-point shooting an incredible percentage

47% from The Arc and not just that but 50490 that’s not something you see every day and 90% free throws should be an easy two here that’s just a crazy number as a sophomore an easy two here let’s hope that happens so the Lions will go up by two hopefully commentator’s curse

Won’t get me here and so far we’re safe halfway home Darden with his second attempt goes up and the 90% might just go up to 91 after that Gus Hood Now High having to go against this high court press once more kinder to hood hood trying to make something

Happen pivots around to compare over to hood once more on the far side of the Court outside the ark we’re having some problems with the shot clock now it’s up again and a wonderful three-point shot six to five now your liance Trail little slow offensively looks like

The Scots have been very well with these rebounds resetting the shot clock having more of the ball here’s Devon Dean with an attempt it will be called I believe that was called a charge offensive charge so now the Scots with the ball front of me it’ll be Devon

Dean for two at the line yeah you said the Scots been have been doing a good job of taking care of the ball it’s been a lot of three-point shooting already 5 threes early on they haven’t been doing a lot of inside work so expect that

Later on Pont not the biggest team in terms of size so that’s a little bit of a weakness of theirs so look for Covenant to maybe attack that one thing the Lions really need to do which they’ve struggled with for much of the Season specifically in the month

Of January where they went 1 and seven was finishing the game when they go up high or they’re keeping it competitive is taking some of those advantages that they’re given and making something out of it but instead they’ve not done very well at that have started the month of

February off very well though as compare goes for another three-point shot unsuccessful but Gus Hood now with the ball after the rebound another three-point shot attempt from kard and slaps in frustration after it’s rebounded by the Lions Jolly Now quickly trying to make his way across the court

Has Fisher Darden who has 47% or three might go down to 46 now Gus hood taking his time doesn’t look to set a play looks to rush in top the key but opts to come back ker back to hood over to compare Hood once again trying to shuffle his way into the [Applause]

Good little struggles offensively here to start early on hot starts for both teams but nothing much to write home about in the last minute or two we’ll see a potential jump ball waiting for the call from the ref doesn’t give it compare on the far side

For three gets it once more and compare is started the game hot so many so much outside outside shooting going on and so many threes seems like every possession a team is attempting a three ball it’s bombs away today Lions need to get that in control def defensively but need to get

Something here to match it on the offense fiser Darden now with the ball on the outside doesn’t want to go for three there Noah rear in to Devon Dean Devon Dean one of the larger men on the team tries to use his strength inside the paint over to Breen who goes up with

Three points left on the shot Croc and puts three points on the scoreboard only Trail by one now the Lions keeping up with that high court Press kard with the ball over to the hood to see an attempt from compare who’s already shooting hot and he shoots hot once more the Lions have to get compare under cover because he is absolutely killing it right now compare already with 12 points there’s another one another great

One keeps the score close from Jolly I said that compare has 12 points that’s all 12 of the points that Covenant have Scored now kard at the top over to compare again who’s feeling fun tonight instead tries to share the wealth but it doesn’t go the way of Pearlman Jolly now behind the behind the back underneath the legs pass it’ll be a foul there have to see who the foul is on but

It will send Darden to two not before a short break media timeout it’s been a quite the quite the performance from compare so far yeah already more points than the lions in just over 5 minutes just an insane job from the three-point line especially from both teams that’s

Been their main focus so far on the other hand Noah Rearden for the Lions leads them with scoring with six Ryan Jolly with three and fiser Darden with two it’s been one of the things about those Lions teams I spoke about it with the women as well this transl over to

The men they’re of course Ryan Jolly is always going to have 15 plus points a game but they like to share the wealth of course Ryan Jolly it will be your top shooter but it’s not common to see other players specifically fiser Darden Noah Reen getting into the scorebooks so I

Have to see them get that there got a little bit of a short amount of time left in this media timeout we’re starting to see some of the cave crazies fill out a lot of players or a lot pardon me a lot of students here at pedmont are

Student athletes as it is with most division 3 athletic schools so lot of the teams getting out of practice going to the cap and coming to the game you’re starting to see this Stadium or pardon me this Arena fill up just a little bit more right in front of me I’m seeing a

Ton of women’s soccer a ton of women’s golf here to support their team the student athletes always tend to get really Rowdy and just kind of fire up these these lons as they need in games like this where it’s starting off close they need a good spark of energy it’s

Always good to see some familiar faces in the bleachers that’s the one thing about division 3 Athletics it’s so personable it’s such a homelike feeling a lot of these players on the court I have classes with no re and I actually have two classes with today so we’ll see Fisher Darden

Now at the line unfortunately I have no classes with fer up for two it won’t go in on his first attempt try his second to potentially tie the game [Applause] up no substitute so far for either team just over 6 minutes played so far and misses both shots is fiser Darden

Very uncharacteristic of him especially this season where he has simply come alive Gus Hood now on the far side of the court gets picked and we actually are seeing a subtit tion Carter Johnson stepping in Joe helenbrook now with a fast break attempt but is against four Covenant

Players now Noah rear him with the ball providing support Ryan Jolly trying to make something happen wonderful skills on the court fiser Darden now with the fade away jumper makes up for that two points missed on the free throw line lions with the lead for the first time in the game

Lead by one need some good defense here to keep that lead there Carter Johnson defending against another new man in the game Mitchell for the Scots three-point attempt goes arai and it looks like Carter Johnson had just tried to tip push the ball off the the foot of the Covenant player but

Doesn’t go his way fiser Darden steps out we’re seeing more substitutes for the Lions so now we see compare with the ball who has all 12 of the Covenant points over to the Far Man on the other side of the Court trying to make something happen over to the new man on

The court number 24 doesn’t happen it’s Mitchell once more Ryan Jolly now trying to make something happen only two oh pardon me only three points for him so far Jolly once more trying to make something happen floats around and stings like a bee Gus Hood trying to slow the game down as

The Lions now have a three-point lead Gus Hood going himself gets fouled in the process will step to the line I think that covenant’s been doing a really good job today is their offensive rebounding Pont has really been struggling to try to get the boards down off of those three-point shots

Those long rebounds always really tough to read and covenant’s been on the positive end of those reads and that’s led to a lot more shot shot opportunities for them and you’re correct in that Covenant with nine rebounds in comparison to pedmont six specifically the offensive rebounds like

You said have been able to hold the ball in their offensive side of the court for quite some time I mean the Lions when they go down to their side of the Court they’ve been successful but that’s when they’re able to do that and they’ve just

Not been doing so well in that area so we’ve got some new stats for you here trying to see what’s going on nothing to nothing to shout about for Covenant since the last media time out where compare David compare number zero for Covenant scoring all 12 of the

Points but no one else really sharing the wealth as for the Lions it’s been pretty good so far Noah reared in two for two in the field Ryan Jolly two for three Noah Reen also two for two Beyond The Arc so have to keep an eye out for

Him having a hot game so far as we are inside this media timeout which is just concluded but of course both coaches both teams will like to take a little bit more time another interesting stat is that Covenant has shot 12 threes and 14 field goals meaning they’ve only shot two two-point

Shots so pretty much everything from the three-point ARC today offensively it’s going well for the Scots but just need a little bit more from some other players compare who’s not stepped out of the game yet eventually will have to maybe Gus Hood can get them going with this

Shot attempt here or maybe he won’t perhaps another attempt here is compare steps closer to him and he doesn’t Scotts remain at 12 Noah Reen now with the ball rather than Ryan Jolly it’ll be Griffin with the ball over to Reen now inside some stitutes that will let

You know about in just one moment for the Lions but we know we’re reared in for three extends the lead to six so a hot start for Covenant is fizzled out quickly by some good offense specifically from Noah Rearden for the Lions who’s been hot as ever this

Week had 220o game so really big impact on the offensive end for the Lions much needed for their hot start in February speaking of hot starts the Lions since coming out have for the last 2 minutes and 59 seconds have gone in a two a 10 and0 run wonderful stuff from the Lions

Trying to change that here compare with the ball 5 seconds left on the shot clock loses it tries to grab it is it’s Griffin Neville drives all the way down the court wanted to make something happen on his own rather opposite to his teammate who finishes the job Caleb L the

Sophomore from coming Georgia makes it happen so now we see Zach Thomas with the ball trying to maneuver his way around over to Pearlman back to codin compare was a bit of a dummy there tried to get something but nothing for him 10 seconds left on the shot clock

Perhaps a travel but nothing called and a shot attempt from Pearlman goes arai Noah rear in now over across the court two long two-point shot goes in from Caleb Les so now what was a slow start from the Lions has turned into a 10-point lead

So now it’s a 12-0 run over the last 3 minutes and 27 seconds and counting Covenant started hot now trying to get something happened by a man whose name isn’t David compare maybe this three-point shot will make it happen no it won’t so now Griffin Neville with the

Ball over to Ryan Jolly on the near side back to Neville for three bounces in and out Covenant starting to speed up the pace sum and just mishandled by the Covenant player that’s Pearlman we’ll see some subs and it’ll be Ryan jolly and Carter Johnson who steps

Out Devon Dean steps in as well as fiser Darden Noah Reen who’s been in for the entirety of the game just over 10 minutes some subs as well for Covenant it will be number 22 Michael St Germaine who steps in maybe he can be the spark for this

Covenant offense but no spark so far as r or as Noah Reen was celebrating a little bit doing some sort of seat belt celebration this Lions defense has been absolutely demoralizing this Covenant offense since those first couple of minutes where compare had those 12 points which still halfway into the

First half are their only points so they’ve been ice cold from the field since that hot start in the beginning in the Lions I’m sorry sorry to cut I saw what you were going with compared to the lines that was a good fun that was good comparas just stepped off it’ll be Pier

Smith who steps in for him and we’ll have to see what the Scots can do now it’s codin with the ball for two a jumper out but recovered by Pier Smith who does get the spark going the first time they’ve scored in over 5 minutes 9 minutes left to go on the

Clock 20 on the shot clock it’s Griffin Neville with the ball Noah reared in for three doesn’t fall for him hard to tell Griffin Neville now earlier in the season he had a some sort of a mullet now he’s got a shorter cut so forgive me

If I mess it up a little bit occasionally it’s it’s a nice haircut he trimmed the back up a little bit makes him a look a little bit more clean yeah no longer Flows In The Wind but nothing to complain about out nothing to complain about that three-point shot from Caleb

Les now an 11-point lead for the Lions who have come into this game Flying as more and more people are starting to come in to the cave we’re starting to see baseball step in as perhaps a couple substitutes come in David compare steps back in Gus Hood wants more

As well as Jesse ker so all starters other than Pier Smith are back in the game just a short rest for a lot of the players seeing some of them frustrated maybe about their time maybe about their lack of scoring ability trying to get some of that scoring ability back David compar with

The ball has 12 of the 14 points goes all the way instead opts to give it over but that hook shot is unsuccessful what fouled in the process so will’ll send Pier Smith to the line good job by Les to contest that shot but just a little bit too wild

Throw line as well they have not been able to get those easy points on the board have to I mean it goes without saying in basketball if you’re not finishing from the line you’re not going to win games currently 0 for three might be as 0 for four now from the line or

Instead it’s a turnover yeah definitely looked like a new pempa from where we’re standing looks like it but it was a little bit down that left side near the the goal so would had had been a layup anyway so one can always hope exactly one of these days we’ll get one

Eventually Gus Hood being double teams now compare and Caleb Les tracking back on defense compare once more back to hood it’s the hood and compare show St Germaine with an opportunity for three and he makes that one count Lions lead cut to nine Jolly now taking his time receiving some instruction from head

Coach Greg Neely for three Jolly takes it and it hits everywhere but doesn’t fall down Gus Hood now over to compare quickly drives inside the paint but feeds it back to one of his teenag kard tries to Pivot now over to hood who has to jump for it St Germaine

Gus Hood now at the top of the key over to St Germaine for three and he drains it once more lead cut to six on a good run now are the line or pardon me are the Scots LH to the near side with Darden Dean pivots trying to see something far

You need if you want to get wide open threes and they’ve been shooting a lot of them so a good change up that they need to get momentum in go into halftime St Germain hitting two threes back to back increases or decreases the deficit but it still compared who leads all

That you know you do the best to make sure that even if you’re not playing on the team you want to support your team you to make sure they win you want to try to get in the other team’s head so definitely a good job by the lacrosse

Guys to support the Lions seeing all sorts of pedmont teams out here trying to support as the Lions hold on to this eight-point lead David compare trying to change that though Ryan Jolly gets the better of him it’ll be a foul by St Germaine looks like he was just holding

Jolly a little bit too much good sportsmanship gives him a high five says hey it’s just basketball nothing personal yep kind of tried to dive for the ball there and just got his hands hooked on J number five Jersey so just tough break for St Germaine so Noah rear him will

Inbound it’s a good foul for St Germaine cuz the Lions looked like they were about to go on a tear but now they have a chance to reset Devon Dean with the ball near around the paint finally steps in has to feed it over to Jolly pardon

Himself and now Ryan Jolly what can he do will we see some magic need to get the cave crazies off their feet to combat this loud Covenant bench Carter Johnson just just swatted the ball out most see a timeout called be a pedmont timeout called by coach Greg

Neely good job by Gus Hood in the post there going low for that ball that jcj had That’s What You Preach if you’re a guard defending against a bigger guy in the post you want to make sure you go low because he has the height advantage

The weekend Thursday we can say is start of the weekend one of the busiest weeks going into the weekend in pedma athletics for the entire year not just season this is one of the few weekends where Winter Sports and spring Sports Collide yesterday was the start of women’s lacrosse season where

Unfortunately they fell 16 to 17 against OG SC already saw the women play today and what was their also also their penultimate game in the Collegiate Conference of the South regular season tennis men’s and women men’s and women’s tennis are both away in Kentucky and men and swim are also away

And then baseball and softball also starting up and I guess you could consider Today part of the weekend you know as the kids say it’s almost Friday it’s almost Friday almost Friday somewhere instead of instead of Jimmy Buffett we were just hearing some Luke Bryan rest in peace

Jimmy pour up a mark for him I am 21 Carter Johnson puts one up restores a 10-point lead Gus hood has 3 minutes 15 seconds on the clock trying to cut this lead to something before they go into halftime now St Germain inside Pierce Smith goes for it looked like he was

Going to try and dunk rather just uses a little floater whatever gets the job done Ryan Jolly now taking his time but still keeping the pressure up for two Returns the favor so it’s been a lot of back and forth in this game Covenant just trying to get some

Sort of momentum going need to pick it up on defense probably apply a little bit more pressure a little bit more aggression because as you see here they can do great stuff on offense but when it comes to making the stops defensively forcing turnovers and trying to get the

Fast breaks down the court it’s just not going their way yeah you got to be able to play a bit more lock down defense and that was good job Fisher just with a nice Cut but got to be able to play defense you know defense wins championships obviously Covenant

Probably not in the champ ship bid this year sadly but got to be able to preach that mentality that defense is more important than offense because defense can help out your offense and force a lot of opportunities when it comes to defense Covenant actually ranked number third in the Collegiate Conference of

The South but not quite showing that today David compare for two and it’s off into the hands of fiser Darden fiser Darden receives the ball after a one two with Ryan jolly and his fouled in the process will be the team six Covenant it’s Team Six that

Is that’s one of those calls that’s kind of gotten I guess you could say modernized is that pump fake and move into the body I know Darden was looking to drive there but still there’s been a lot of Revolution with that call of pump faking and drawing contact so interesting call there yeah

Controversial move seen all over the NBA especially locally Trey young loves that one fish D and Trey young one of the same you could say so 50 4090 I can’t say Trey has done it yet he’s been very very close but Darden like you said breakout year so basically confirmed

Fisher darden’s better than try young he he should just go to the Hawks I mean the Hawks need the help right now anyway why didn’t he just skip College he should he totally should as we’re lucky to have him meanwhile David compare goes for three doesn’t get it there the

Rebound rebound rebound rebound all so many l and so many Scots just in a huddle trying to grab it but no one able to and luckily no points in the hole as we see his substitute David compare steps out and it’ll be luke codin to step in been a while since we’ve seen

Him typically what we see from the Scott head coach is what he likes to do this is Coach Josh Brown his second season is let his Starters play for quite some time and then for about two or so minutes 2 and 1 half put in your your second string and when that second

String went in is when the Lions were able to capitalize maybe they’ll do so here 35 seconds left to go in the first half Gus Hood who is one of those starters feeds it all the way across the court for codin who’s just come in for three hits off the rim rebounded by

Jolly who looks to slow the clock down only 24 seconds to go near 20 now and we’ll look to eat the clock up smart decision go into the half with the lead by 12 maybe get two maybe three still is Jolly codin defending him looks to go all the way and he

Certainly does great work by Carter Johnson to help him get there now only 1 second left the shot actually falls in it’s an interesting shot it was more lateral as some Lions on the sideline actually Lou wol fol and na ne eids on the other side claiming it travel but

Unfortunately they’re not wearing the black and white stripes so your Lions lead by 11 going into the half it’s been a good first half for the Lions yeah they’ve done a lot of good jobs just everywhere on the floor really they had a couple defensive lapses in that kind

Of track meet last 5 minutes with which is filled by a lot of scoring but they’ve been doing a good job from did decent job from the free line there’s still some work to be done there but a good job from the three-point Arc decent job defensively holding them to just 33

Points fuel by Covenant cold shooting in certain runs but just a very just good job there’s nothing else to say about it from the Lions they’ve done their job and they’re up 11 and it was good for them because obviously we saw that Covenant came out hot I mean David
