Lines Saturday Round Table lineup is great one man Dave Tomkins the Low Country over in Buford South Carolina uh Alabama West Point Stanford Savant horse racing we’re going to cover a lot with him Kevin scarbinsky US basketball writers Hall of Fame uh the Birmingham lead scarbo NOS subscribe you’ll be
Wiser for it Doug Dean AUD do Birmingham will check in with us as well a lot to cover basketball football Harbaugh I like that uh his brother uh in Baltimore will host Kansas City the Detroit Lions make the trip out to San Francisco this stuff is all connected
College to pro pro to college question we’re going to get into today is you think the NFL is going to start subsidizing nil like baseball does with the farm system let’s get started [Applause] Sidelines with Rob Brown talk sporty to Me all right man uh Dave Tomkins there he isy let’s go hey this is Brendan Martin Dave buddy oh I know him well yeah we’re all friends by now dude the smartest man in game gville Florida smart Okala it’s all it’s all Gainesville when we’re in Okala it’s like a 30 yeah de
Country yeah and and I and Dave this is you know Mari said this Gaston he said the reason the horses and there’s so many of them now there the limestone in the soil so were you Chief marketing officer at Church Hill Downs I’ve got more people asking me about horses and
Saying guy is amazing and then Frank Duffy’s got that horse at Oakland um tell people real quick Doug Dean’s going to join us in just a minute but tell people how big a deal the oakw races are over at Hot Springs in relation to the Kentucky Derby well uh a very big deal
And I think we are now in 98 or 97 days until Derby uh Derby 150 this will be the biggest derby um arguably ever with the possible exception of the secretary at Derby in 1973 yeah um and the prep races are are well underway the next prep race is on
February 3D I believe uh at oaklan and then a few weeks later will be the Arkansas Derby um which is the one of the biggest prep races leading up to the derby so yeah oaklan looms extremely large in the road to the Kentucky Derby
And um you know what I may just take a wild hair and head to Oakland um in Mar to watch the Arkansas Derby because I’ve never been to that track I’ve been to many of them around the country but I I’ve never been to Oakland and I want to
Do it all right then you need to come here to the Cherry Farm and we’ll meet you here I want to go I I want to be there look I don’t I love I love horses growing up in Memphis in Germantown and cville there are more horses within the
City limits of Memphis than there are any major city in America much less the world but the thing is you that that’s what I love but I want to understand more about them and our audience loves obviously college sports and all but they love horses and there’s nothing
More beautiful than a pasture full of horses and and it so I want to do that what’s the date of oaklan the big race uh I’ll need to check it’s in it’s in mid-march mid mid to late March it it’s it kind of coincides with March Madness
So it can be a great weekend so we can you know watch watch the tournament and and see the Arkansas Derby but it’s it’s on a particular weekend it’s on a Saturday and it’s the same day as other um big prep races I I believe the
Florida Derby and down in Fort rdale I I’ll tell you what next next Saturday I’ll I’ll lay out the entire schedule uh leading up to the derby because that’s that’s it’s it’s good stuff and one of the things we did um back in the day is
We paid to have the road to the derby televised um on NBC and and other NBC affiliates and it didn’t quite pan out but um it’s it’s that’s going to work I I I I think this year I think next year actually with the Derby 150 this year and then
Next year people will start to pay more attention to the road to the derby because it’s really important it’s really cool and it really uh you get to get see the fabric of horse racing in some of the other places not named Churchill Downs like Oakland okay like golf
Stream yeah I mean I think that’s somebody’s asking is that buddy Martin you’ve got on buddy Martin’s glasses I am buddy Martin this is what are you talking about I I want an Emmy this is my Emmy I worked real real hard for this
Emy and I want you to know my name is Buddy Martin that’s right I’m buddy Martin and you’re not that’s right I I mean I got I got the B and the Martin part so I’m good and I’m in his house so what do you what do you
Want and in the studio hey right let’s get going Studio B Studio B to for ball basketball man going on right now um Dave that that that Auburn Alabama game Wednesday night in Tuscaloosa uh Auburn is a weird down by 14 to the half fought back took a brief
Lead in the second half but Nate oats I you know look let’s just break it down I want to get your feedback and then I want Brandon to jump in I’m last year he was put in a bad position by Alabama they should have said any questions
About this matter with Darius miles will be referred to our legal council that are here right there ask them any nothing but basketball questions for Nate Oaks and he got put on the spot and I’m not defending him I don’t know him but In fairness he he gave a a bad
Answer but the guy can flat out coach and and and damn it man they can shoot um and in the last three years it’s been either Auburn or Alabama that have won the SEC in basketball and it looks like this year one of those two or Tennessee
Or Kentucky but one of those two probably going to be it when are we going to admit that basketball is now a big ass deal in the great state of Alabama well I’m a longsuffering Alabama basketball fan um way way wh back in the day my dad played basketball for for
Alabama um I I unfor I I I love the sport and played growing up in high school and stuff I unfortunately did not inherit his athletic Gene so I um I rode the pine while he was all state is senior year in tusos anyway um but going
Way back um to CM Newton in 19 I want to say it’s 1976 in the in the tournament we blew North Carolina off the court and then the next game we played Indiana and that was the year that Indiana went undefeated had them we had them beat we had them
Beat as a matter of fact coach Knight later on told my dad in his entire career that was the one game where he felt like he he beat a better team um and and and that’s been Alabama forever and hopefully Nate oats can be the the
The the answer to the riddle of why can’t Alabama progress past the sweet 16 in the tournament and maybe maybe n is is is the riddle I mean when they’re on when they’re loose when they’re playing their game like they were Wednesday night they’re hitting threes and stuff
They look like the best team in the country but then you get a meat grinder game a gutted out game in the tournament like last year against San Diego State and they just they don’t have any answers and and so um I’m I’m kind of a skeptic because I’m just I’ve been
Suffering with them for 40 years but maybe Nate oats is the answer um that said I’m a huge Bruce Pearl fan as as you know and I I pull for Auburn Basketball just as much as I do Alabama and I think coach Pearl can get Auburn
This year to the at least the elite eight if not the final four yeah and Brendan you watch a lot of basketball and you’ve seen and you we you talked about this yesterday when Florida won those back-to-back titles in ‘ 06 and ‘ 07 in the middle of winning a national
Championship in football football still sucked all the air out of the room in Florida after Kentucky has won more national championships than anybody in this league well I mean look first of all it was gains Vegas as they call it back then because it was like Total
Domination and I remember my dad telling me when we were because we we were covering everything then but for an outlet called Gator Country and I’ll never forget uh you know just like Dad says to me he says you’ll never see this again in the rest of your life you’ll
Never see this back to back to back you’ll just won’t see that so and you know you got a Billy Donovan was living with neighbors with uh with Meyer so so Urban Meyer and Diamond L like Championship CER sack back there man yeah they lived right next to each other
And uh you know it was you know I mean I say no one car I people cared I mean yeah what what you got jokim Noah was like such a great I mean you know not a great college player but you know he was a just such a leader and like a spirit
Leader he was like the Tim TBO of the basketball team you know in a lot of ways and you know and and don’t underestimate something as you all know in a school or whatever when you’ve got like a t-bo running around because we talked about this yesterday is like
Women’s basketball how coaches are kind of getting more connected with you know TBO was like the OG of that you know he afterwards you know the games he’d run around he’ do a whole Victory lap around the whole stadium high-fiving everybody in all the games um you know signing
Autographs you know all that kind of stuff all that Goodwill but you know it just was that electric time but there was no way you’re gonna and I don’t care I I don’t care if you won an NBA championships at that time especially it was still football and the joke was like
Hey Florida’s won back-to-back nates in basketball and we’re still talking about football um just because you know that’s and that’s the way it’s always going to be you know um but I I think I think you I think we’re seeing a more especially with nil and transfer portter because we
Talked about this you know last week which is you know one of the things that I feel like is happening in this process is the gutting of tradition right it’s it’s the I was raised a gator I’m gonna be a gator you know uh you know even we
Talked to Urban Meyer about uh now you’re gonna correct me on his name but yeah Doug Dean Doug Dean’s trying to get in you see him okay keep going on this thing this is this is an interesting conversation well it’s just it we’ll bring in Doug right here hey Doug uh uh
That the whole concept of of of you know of tradition and and when you got Trevor etn going to play in Georgia yeah you know and here we talked to Meer about that and his first thing is like I would I just wouldn’t ever let that kid do
That it’s like what a mistake so but you you’re seeing this sort of Break In This sort of uh tradition even DJ lagway is coming in you you know these guys are ra t-bo Ray the gator right raay to come play couldn’t couldn’t wait to do that
And and now you got guys more over with the transfer portal that they’re just like you know hey I don’t care I’ll go play here I’ll go play there it’s highest bidder right pay for play say what you want to do but we’re we’re going to see more of that occurring
Because guys don’t stay there three and four years and when you stay at a place three and four years that’s why you got a sideline full of former Gators who are coming you know back to help recruit opening restaurants having businesses there you know uh all all of these
Things I think I think we’re gonna see more of a break with that well BR got a question for you though Dave from Wesley Duncan down in Fort Lauderdale Florida viewer ask Brendan oh I’m sorry for Brendan if jumbo track in Okala is still Associated or owned by John
Travolta I don’t even know what jumble R track is I’ve never heard of it so J TR has a place in okal I do know that now that’s that’s it’s it’s pronounced jumble air jumo air is the only fly in and fly out community that he can take his I think
It’s his modified dc9 where he flies they have an airst strip in a full-blown air strip right in the middle of the I guess the neighborhood uh and you know he he pulls his jet like a car like right up to his car he’s got a couple
Jets but he he’s got big I mean these are Big airliners now he can fly in and out of there but I don’t I I know there’s a park up there but with the on concept of the world Equestrian Center uh and then you got the Florida horse
Park down here in the South um it’s not you know a lot of these tracks OBS um you know they’re they’re they’re going to see a Resurgence of some of it but it’s it you know you know because because know you’re talking about a whole different thing you got you got
Racing here World equester Center doesn’t do racing right there’s no track out there that’s all Hunter jumper that’s all Dr that’s all you know the Arabians all that stuff you know a show it’s a show park with four indoor Arenas so you can do that you know all that big
Stuff there so so a lot of that stuff is Shifting uh into other places but you know horse racing is a whole different animal so connected to that as I was I think I think Harvard I think Harvard Business School should do a case study on the 20072 2008 Florida
Basketball teams because in my opinion that was the best put together team ever and it was it was it was a a classic case of chemistry and teamwork overwhelming talent because they did not have overwhelming talent I mean they I mean they they had some they had five good players you know starting
And three good players on the bench but but no one was outstanding and they just had a great team obviously Billy Donovan gets a lot of credit for that but the players do as well yeah and we don’t need to let we don’t need to let that
Team you know fade too far in the rearview mirror because that was a fantastic basketball team yeah and Doug d you’re you’re I agree with that totally Dave because I grew up watching his dad Yanik Noah play tennis I mean that was just so cool uh I I’m with you
You you’ve got to uh make legacies of those teams for people to look up to as a standard Doug Dean you’re at the hunting camp it’s raining up here in Memphis over in parking right now or whatever’s on your mind just uh we’re pull out of the driveway doing
About 105 there you go good morning guys Dave uh congrats to the tide the other night uh Auburn was really fortunate frankly to to make that a game down to the wire um but the uh excuse me might have a little ambient noise here in a
Minute but so we we have um rain drops and threats of tornadoes possibly uh as the morning progress supposed to move out midday but um Rob I wanted to ask you a duck hunting question because I’m not a duck hunter but what happens down here off the Kaba River probably a slew
Up there there’s a couple of devout duck hunters and I might be on a deer stand and about six probably barely legal shooting like 6 610 a.m. there’re about 20 rapid fire shotgun blast and then it’s over is duck hunting about a 15minute proposition that that’s what you get
Down there you’re probably shooting wood ducks are jumping up some mards up here up here if it doesn’t happen by 8:30 or 9 it’s probably not going to happen we don’t like the I mean I’ve probably duck hunted over 1500 times it does not change you got a probability chart the
Ducks it the best shooting in most cases is in the first 30 to 45 minutes right there at first light but um you know then like Wilson will bring his friends up from Auburn to hunt up here and we might see 20,000 ducks in a day and
They’ll tell you we might see 15 or 20 wood ducks in a couple of MERS but it’s it’s just different now you get up there in North Alabama in the Tennessee River Valley yeah it’s a totally different ball game so unlike the hours and hours on stand
And deer hunting it’s very much a social event you oh yeah you get in a a blind with a kitchen and you’re making breakfast and omelets out there uh some of these know look in West Tennessee a lot of these things are underground with shooting porches and flat screen TVs in
Them and full kitchens and they’re out there from sun up to sun down and when their wives or girlfriends ask how was the hunting it was outstanding never tell them you didn’t do well ever never put a pen to paper to anything you like doing Doug you know
That both Dave and Brendan on good to see you guys um to the what was a very entertaining especially for Bama fans packing the Coleman Coliseum Auburn gets maybe a small assist for helping packet arrival game helping pack it but and I I assume they paid their power bill by nowadays
Couldn’t get the lights on but uh you know what I saw in that game and you really do credit Alabama especi Mark Sears just a fantastic guard he can do it all and um the the first half what I saw was the environment some of those especially the younger players like
Holloway that who’s going to grow up he’s going to be great when I think he’s not natural position I think he needs to be at the two position and he will be when pedford comes in next year but there was just about a 10minute period before halftime that we had too many
Guys that were deer in the headlights yeah they just froze yep and and when you have that happen to your Shooters and you’re not defending like you can and Alabama to their credit when when Bruce inserted Leo Burman I love the kid he fights hard they saw blood in the
Water and they were doing some which is forcing uh leor or or Janai broom to have to guard Sears and that’s a mismatch big time in Alabama’s favor so you get down by 14 at half um you you just needed to keep it single digit at half in all likelihood Auburn finds a
Way to win but again credit to Alabama I think what Bruce will do that’s a game you hate losing is stings to lose your rival on the other hand that’s one of those humbling games you find out where you need to work on on things and um
I’ll be it’ll be interesting to watch Auburn at the hump in starville today that’s a physical very good team yes I’m not even predicting Auburn to win but I am interested to see how Bruce rebounds from what happed the other way way back in the day I played at Mountain Brook
With Leo’s um uncle Gil bman yeah well Leo leor Burman to me uh you saw that about Jackson Robbie did y’all see the story in Birmingham he’s the grand son of Billy neighbors uh and you know uh I guess nephew of West neighbors walked on in Alabama and for about or five years
Was on the field his entire time for three snaps and now he’s in charge of quality control coaching on the offensive line with Butch Jones who I’m sure he knew when he was at Alabama at Arkansas State leor Burman guys like that Dylan Cardwell at Albert that’s
That’s nil and these are the guys and I mean Dave your perspective is really cool lifelong Bama fan you know there goes stadman cheery touchdown Alabama brought to you by bromberg’s Jewelers then you go to West Point and you probably had a transistor radio that you
Could listen to games with but you go to Stanford so you got you’re all over the place but the end of the dayren no is a renaissance man well but all of y’all are it’s it’s this appreciation of basketball we had this discussion last night and I’m gonna throw it to you Dave
Here at the farm at dinner uh about Old Miss Old Miss fans they’re scared one of them said he goes you know we’re just like oh God what’s gonna happen everybody’s picking us to do well next year you’ve got to embrace the expectations of success you can’t see it
As a burden can you you’re all about success well um and and every time I failed in life and it’s been there’s been a plenty it’s for that very reason is that you’re you’re afraid of success and and then failure becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and um you know
That’s what ol Miss needs to be very you know wary of very mindful of because yeah they they have a a clear path to a great season next year in in football they got they’re off to a great start in basketball and they’ve kind of slipped I I think their their their talent
Differentials is the reason I think they’re super coached in basketball have a tremendous coach but yeah they they need to be they need to be go ahead and embrace it and and and you know um go out and a blaze of glory on next season and and just try to take teams by
The throat and and and try to get to the playoff and if you fail you fail but but but don’t fail because you’re afraid of success yeah yeah and Rob you know this will probably bring some sneers deservedly but I wonder if it’s on point and this would be difficult today to do
In today’s game of college football and basketball but when coach D took over and there may be parallels with Coach Sabin returning that was obviously a a tremendous brand and before Nick Sabin and storage program but they had had a a bumpy ride for what 15 or 20 years in
The wake of Coach Bryant but when coach D took over was way worse of culture and brand and just we the saying goes that all would lose its share of Iron Bowls uh in that nine-year drought before the kickoff yes so all coach D do to to today’s point to break through that
Mentality of um you know be fear of success Weighing on you or completely eradicated any trace of fear you knew that almost like Navy Seals if I survive this preparation this literal physical survival there is nothing whatsoever to feel about going about on the field of competition Cakewalk compared to the
Rough preparation we’ve had but the problem is I don’t think coaches have that tactic available to them today because you get charged with assault and battery well that you know the the the the part you’re talking about Brendan and um showing this basketball game here the
Hard workouts if you do that then you as coach I would say you expect to win you have a sense of entitlement meaning we have worked we have prepared we’ve worked harder than anybody we’re going to come in and we’re going to dominate this game and I’m telling you Nate oats
And Bruce Pearl the two of them going at each other is great for college basketball and and talking about Chris beard you you saw what they did 7751 to Old Miss in Oxford the other night and um that was that was brutal um and or what have but that just showing
That game uh and looking at all these good yeah the the Chris Beard’s a great coach and his talent isn’t that great at Old Miss but what he’s doing uh is he’s getting those guys to believe they’re a lot better than they are and I I look at
Nate oats Bruce Pearl Chris beard Eric muselman and then the other one Matt McMahon what he’s doing at LSU man that that was a program and we were talking with jacqu duay W AFB Channel 9 down in Baton Rouge yesterday was on the show and he said there’s a you know look at
Will Wade what he’s doing out at MCN you know out in Lake Charles and they went up on the road and beat M michig so there a lot of people he said maybe we got rid of will Wade too soon what were they going to do to him they didn’t do
Anything to Bill self or uh Roy Williams or any of those guys so that it’s kind of it’s kind of uh a double-edged sword there I mean know anyone maybe maybe they did get rid of him but but McMahon LSU’s three and three and they had they were basically got the death penalty
Three years ago everyone on the roster left yeah what I love about the last two weeks um the national media um is starting to take notice and praise SEC basketball there there’s a lot more national attention on the SEC and the talk of you know it it may be a eight
Nine 10 team you know bid league and and so it’s it’s it’s getting the kind of ink that the ACC used to get and SEC just kicks the acc’s ass now in basketball um and it’s it’s getting similar Inc you know as as the Big 10 I
In my opinion I still think the Big 12 and the Big East are the best two conferences but I think the SEC is right behind there and I think I think we will have for sure one team in the Elite 8 probably one team in the final four and
Who knows maybe two teams in the elite eight so it’s um just it’s getting better and better Brendan do we want to take a quick commercial break uh and then come back this is a great discussion and I think Old Miss fans have got to embrace High EX expectations
And Doug Dean I want when we come back Brendan you want to hear Doug is Doug has a matrix that they use about companies use about hiring people and profiling people and I think this applies so much to what we do in college athletics and in all because Nick Sabin
I think people the longer he gets away from being a head coach in retirement or whatever he does the more people are going to appreciate you you can say well he had had more Talent than everybody do you know how hard it is to get all those
People with that kind of talent and those egos to play as one that’s that’s the secret sauce we’re going to talk about it right in just a Moment in a perfect world you’d set a health goal and results would happen overnight in this world the real world it takes time dedication and the right support to achieve your best self the vitamin Shop’s Health enthusiasts are here to make sure you’re not wasting a single moment on the wrong supplements

Become a partner and help keep our family safe because none of God’s children are for sale got up back in our room back everybody thanks for coming we lost uh lost Doug where’d you go Doug be on a while I’m sorry come here you can watcha on his buddies yeah he’s in his
Hunting club right now over in the black belt I didn’t know we’ll wait till he comes back but y’all know this that when you the expectations when when you do something well you know if you’re a runner if you’re a whatever and you win a race the
Next time you show up for the race everybody is going oh there’s Dave Tomkins he won you know he ran a you know he he won the 5K last time everybody’s coming after you you’ve got to embrace greatness and success and the bottom line is uh Doug I want to get
This when you talk about Pro profiling employees that test it’s a matrix that you use past performance is the best indicator of future you know activity whatever dogs can’t read their pedigrees nor can horses but their owners can uh you gotta you still got to train
Them yeah well and I won’t make this a seminar and the instrument Rob’s referring to is the Judgment index it’s easily Googled there’s a couple of you know look alike these guys are in ch Dr Steve Byam is a character um and he was mentored 20 30 Years Ago by Robert
Hartman Hartman escaped Nazi Germany fascinating story he was a lawyer at like 22 years old and he he saw the oppression the evil and he managed to escape Nazi Germany and when he came to the US would you believe he became the like number three ranking executive working
For Walt Disney the Walt Disney not not Disney Corporation and but his life dream was Hartman’s was to create some work he was a brilliant mathematician was fascinated with human behavior psychology he wanted to create something that was a Force for good having come from Nazi Germany so he ended up
Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for uh what was called the the Hartman value profile index but briefly what how this could apply to athletic leadership and how often guys who we see well-intended coaching hires head coach or assistant that the resume looks good Jimmy seon said everything great what could
Possibly go wrong listening to their agent and within a short period of time you know either they are a fraud maybe they don’t have the work ethic you thought or they’re a toxic Force within the culture of your leaders team but what you’re looking for is three domains and the assessment within a
15minute online completion tells you the interpersonal skill or sensitivity to Unique situations with human beings and Dynamics work tasks that’s basically just having a really Elite work ethic not being one of these trust fun babies robing which I shouldn’t have to work I it’s beneath me to work and finally the
One that’s l far less common is a real appreciation for the Strategic big picture the architecture not just what’s right in front of me but how all the parts fit together in the bigger world and the bigger architecture of the organization I am stunned really stunned with all this science available that we
Give eight to10 million a year contracts to head football coaches on largely on their resume and Grant some of them you’ve seen them enough you don’t need to interview them you know how they’re going to tick like coach but others a bunch of games but you really
Don’t know what their ticking Time Bomb liabilities are unless you can assess it with with tools that are readily available like this one yeah well you know the best thing I’ve ever heard is if a dog will bite he’ll do it when he’s a pup and we heard this Brendan you
Heard this when Matt Dean was on the show with us Thursday his son worked for Jimbo Fisher for four years now he’s the director of scouting uh he got a new promotion for Dan Lanning at the University of Oregon and he said you know there’s a big difference in working
For Dan Lanning versus working for Jimbo Fisher he said Jimbo he goes he didn’t he just he didn’t work that hard and no he liked to play a little Golf and maybe hang out and you know do a little you know working lunches and you know think about Brendon Brendan ask yourself this
And Doug and Dave and everybody listening and watching uh if somebody told you you’ve got a 10-year guaranteed $75 million contract okay no matter what happens unless you get caught you know with an elephant or something in bed I don’t know um but nothing can happen to you
And then and then a couple of years in Ross Bor who believe it or not still has a job he’s the new ad at Ohio State um what if you’re not scared about making money to pay your mortgage pay your bills to support your family uh to do
The things you want to do you won’t get out of bed in the morning A lot of times you’ll lay around and smoke weed and do nothing I mean you can you can give your people so much money that you kill their drive and I think that’s one of the
Things along the line what Doug said is happening with these big salaries you can’t guarantee get give them enough to be happy but don’t give them so much they don’t want to get up in the morning listen I used to I used to I’ve had many production companies and stuff in the
Past and you know the joke was uh look you know I tell a client I said you know we’ll do a handshake deal here whatever I’ll make this video for you but here’s the thing I want half up front and half on delivery and it really you know
Wasn’t that I didn’t want it all up front it’s just that I knew I probably wouldn’t finish it as quickly as I wanted I needed the carrot on the stick right at the end of the day and and and that’s this and was that I think is for
Everybody it’s really hard to get motivated especially when you know you’re making gajillion ions amounts of dollars um to to to it’s just a mindset I’m a big believer in mindset you know when you wake up in the morning and what you you know what’s your intention of of
The day is you cannot sit around and it you just get lazy and and everything else sort of gets and I hate to say that money is such a motivator because I’m I you know you know I we’re seeing it be sort of the root of all evil in the nil
But in a lot of ways it is and and and it’s it’s really difficult to to discipline yourself beyond that when you know you got money in the bank I mean what the hell do you care you know uh in a lot of ways uh that you know if you
Get yeah if I get cans I’m gonna still make gajillions of dollars you know yeah and and what does money do uh do for you for for for for many for most a lot of money makes one become complacent for someone like Nick Sabin a lot of money makes him work
Harder yeah because with he he he he um embellishes and Embraces the expectation associated with all that money and so he just works harder and I think that goes back to Doug’s test that that he was talking about I can’t wait to Google that that’s fascinating say it again
That the name Doug of that test and again I’m feel like I’m making it an infomercial for the guys that there’s multiple lot of good assessments what the beauty one is I’ll throw a big worded phrase at you guys inductive reasoning most of the assessments are
And I’ll be cous sound like are you thought of as a likable person oh yes I’m like and you can kind the the assessment the presumption is your honest the the Judgment index you really don’t know the quote right answer so it’s it’s impossible to find it judgment
Index if any of you Rob if y’all want to take it online I’m happy to do that and send you the report so you can say ask yourself is this valid is this me does it work and then they have Athletics um report on it that interestingly gives
You information on an individual how do they do in a comp fiercely competitive environment when Dave was talking I could and Brendan I couldn’t help but be reminded of Gus malan in his latter years at Auburn it’s well documented probably harder to prove that in recruiting Gus became so risk averse
With getting into this is pre what I call the I’ll call the dark gray areas of how you recruit everybody knows what I’m talking about yeah help for example helping Mom and Dad have the money to come do an unofficial visit everybody was doing probably a secondary
Violation but if Gus got so worried about being fired for cause and not walking away with his buyout that he lost the Competitive Edge in Talent acquisition so he you know I don’t think Gus does not have a work ethic we’ve seen that before I don’t think he and
But there are coaches that once you start paying them that kind of cash will naturally become lazier I think we saw it with oraron the year after his National Championship he started enjoying the fruits shall we say the fruits of his championship labor so these are things this is what ads and
And the uh powerful Board of Trustees get paid to do and you have to defend yourself if you will from Jimmy seon because conflicts of interest do not apply with Jimmy ston he can have multiple clients there’s no no Chinese wall there no some point some talking about
Cleaning up college football he’s not doing anything illegal but it sure doesn’t pass a smell test let me let me throw something too Kevin scarbinsky is going to be in here with us in just a second bring him on bring Kevin on in and I I’ll tell you something I was
Talking to uh Rocky Top Tennessee tailgate report Mark ham last night and talking about when Derek douly was at Tennessee I mean you know instate recruiting players if you’re the University of Tennessee you can go over the speed limit and it’s probably okay when you go out of state and you go 25
Or 30 miles over the speed limit you’re going to get a ticket um but those expectations I love it this is a cool conversation about okay people think you’re going to have a great team next year or whatever then embrace it don’t run from it Kevin you you are welcome to
Sidelines and and I know last week you had some internet issues with spectrum is that the provider down there in Birmingham yeah I don’t want to I don’t want to name any names but I was without I was without Wi-Fi for more than 24 hours and as was the this entire area
Where I live so it was it was very strange it was like being back in the old days you felt out of touch with the outside world yeah yeah yeah well we got Brendan Martin buddy son as our executive producer now so we’ve got a new set and everything he’s down in
Okala the horse capital of the world outside of Germantown in Lexington KY but Kevin SEC basketball uh we’re talking look at look at Arkansas I can’t believe it they’re one in five uh you look at Chris beard the job he’s doing but 17 and3 for Paris at at South
Carolina um kind of heard these cats in and tell us who you think your best teams are top five in the SEC right now and we’ll open it up for discussion Dave talks about the SEC is running away from the AC but is the Big 12 still number
One okay a lot to unpack there obviously I knew that first of all good morning everyone good good to be with you I I feel like I wandered into a a brand new house with know I don’t know I don’t know it’s like I don’t know where the I
Don’t know you did I’m the I’m the new daddy of the house I’m the house Mom yeah house mother right here mother the dead mom so it is it is exciting to talk about SEC basketball especially from here in Birmingham in the state of Alabama I I believe that there’s a very
Good chance that for the fourth straight year the SEC regular season Champion is going to come from the Heart of Dixie and that would be unprecedented and in some ways unbelievable but when you look at what Bruce Pearl did the way he raised Auburn and I don’t know that any coach Has
Lifted a program from as low as Auburn was historically with intermittent periods of of great performance under Sunny Smith and Clif Ellis just the name too not going no offense to Joel leaves back in the day but what he’s done there and then what Alabama the way Alabama
Has answered with Nate oats I think that is now the best basketball rivalry yes I said basketball rivalry in the SEC all hail the ibob some people don’t like that nickname The Iron bow of basketball but it but it’s it helps as a writer if
You have an acronym to be able to use it like that we saw that the other night in Tuscaloosa how close that game was even though Alabama jumped out had an incredible atmosphere once they figured out how to make the lights work and it was a game that went right down to the
Wire as you would expect and I I expect it will be a uh Alabama will be welcomed uh warmly to the Jungle in less than two weeks absolutely we have we’ll have another war on the floor I would put Tennessee I’d put Tennessee in that in
That group of course the way the vs have played look over the last what six or seven years Auburn and Tennessee have been the two best teams in the in the conference and no offense to Kentucky and that they’re not far behind but they’re behind and they’re certainly behind their own expectations yeah
They’re they’re right there you know they’re they’re a little next level South Carolina just blew me away this week with what they did to Kentucky I watched a good bit of that game yeah that was that was no upset guys and I I jokingly said on Twitter you know they’re storming the
Floor as if they’ve done something they’ve never done before they’ve beaten Kentucky four of the last seven overall including last year in rup and three of the last four in Colombia you know they have been there before they’ve had the upper hand in that series of late which
Is again something that Kentucky fans to expect Perfection are holding against John caliper hey Kev Kevin it seems like good to see you Kevin um sorry about your Wi-Fi troubles I I had my own Taste of uh how that must feel I had a massive Cyber attack on my email this week
So any external emails for the foreseeable future while it figures that out but um it seems like a good morning to pile on John caliper isn’t isn’t every morning good I mean a tremendous coach but for my money I think I give him more credit at being an elite
Recruiter of five stars of oneandone players that’s nothing new and that might be unfair to his pedigree but how how does he what is at the hardest can’t be Talent it must be culture and and team cohesiveness how you develop that um how does he have at least a couple of
Head scratcher LW seemingly every year like this well it’s a very good question that they have not solved obviously yeah it is it is not for a lack of talent and they actually have some returning players this year that are contributing and are and are major
Contributors so I I don’t know what is what is off there one thing for one thing the rest of the league has stepped up yeah it is more important important at more places across the conference than ever the the coaches that have been hired and Rob you mentioned Chris beard
It’s no it’s no coincidence that Old Miss has taken a Great Leap Forward yes they brought in some guys out of the portal yes they had some talent but Chris beard unlocks that because he’s a winner he knows how to win basketball games and and put teams in position to
Get into the NCA tournament and then make runs there so it’s the quality of coaching the quality of the quality of player has always been there you know if you if if your baptism in SEC basketball was was in the day when Chuck Pon and Charles Barkley were at Auburn and buck
Johnson and en well enus Watley was a little before my time Buck Johnson Bobby Lee Bobby Lee and I’m glad Dave I’m glad you said it can I go off on a a little bit of a rant here Kudos the ESPN for put for putting that game on on
The main channel the Alabama Auburn game the other night so I’m think okay this is great right this is the whole country is going to see the quality of basketball being played here the the intensity of this rivalry and who do they have as a guest
Sitting at the Press table in the open the Alabama quarterback Jaylen milro now look I love Jaylen milro and he’s he’s a great Ambassador for Alabama as well as a special player but come on guys come on guys whm sanderson’s in the house he’s one of the most he’s one of the
Most important figures in his in basketball history at that University in in the state Bobby Lee hert was there that at that game and you could go on and on again no offense to Jaylen milro but can we can we give basketball it’s due and can we stop giving away the
Football trophy at halftime of the basketball game that’s you know I’ve never player was also at at the table Yeah Nick Dunlap I I didn’t fault him you have kind of a nothing game and it’s a 20 point spread more power to the human interest stories
Like and Nick Dunlap good for him he’s generationally wealthy after winning that PGA event but it I’m with Kevin it’s I don’t care if it’s Auburn doing it or whomever It’s Curious when you’re trying to build up the ACC basketball brand It’s Curious to to Pivot off of
The sport of basketball onto football and golf even though maybe it glued people to the camera Kevin I can’t anything bad about North Carolina because I won’t be fed and I’ll have to eat ramen for the next month um but I think Kentucky is pretty telling that when Kentucky played North
Carolina and Atlanta right at the end of the preseason Kentucky just they they were the clearly the better team and you know people were saying wow this is this is calipari’s Masterpiece this is a final four team they’re a great mix of freshman and seniors and and that’s what everyone was
Thinking going into the regular SEC season and then now Kentucky is just kind of kind of bumbled their way through it meanwhile North Carolina’s 8-0 probably goes 9 and0 in the ACC today so maybe there’s a little you know benchmark ACC versus SEC right there and and to your point what’s shocking Kevin
Thank for the kudos for Bruce Pearl which are indisputable to anybody who’s fair but um what’s shocking gotta be shopping shocking to Kentucky fans is no one can question the passion of their fans about basketball no one but you hear Neville arena for God’s sake talked about as surpassing rup is a tough
Environment to play wellet I guess you guys saw Peter burns from the SEC network earlier in the week said that the jungle is the modernday version of the Cameron crazies a Duke Y and and there’s no better compliment for a basketball crowd than that yeah and they do it game in and
Game out that no one ever accuses them of attending a tennis match when they go to Neville Arena anymore the way they did Alabama Alabama fans early in the season and and kudos to Jay Williams he was a good sport about that he got booed when he walked in the arena on Wednesday
He went straight to the students embraced them you know interacted with them took photos with them signed autographs so and and that was a great and that was a great sign that they had pretty pretty loud for a tennis match with that was that was that was looked
Professionally done with the great photo they had of of the hard hat only difference being the um the the in the jungle they hail from Alabama and and the Cameron they they hail from New Jersey and Connecticut yeah well Kevin the same for Alabama now with the number
Of out ofate students they have hey Doug I want to say this about Kevin uh the pride of Pottsville PA no you no one’s ever said that Doug you you you you got on to it and so did you Dave quit giving out the Foy trophy for the winner of the
Iron Bowl during halftime of the basketball game you know I’m gonna go back I’m gonna reference history rovic uh well no no no this was uh 1987 Ronald Reagan at the Berlin Wall you know uh stop giving out the damn Foy trophy at halftime of a basketball game because we
Are at a point now like my son Wilson I go he graduated from Auburn a year and a half ago you going to the game the Auburn game tomorrow and he’s like D I can’t I can’t spend the night in a tent in line in the rain to get tickets he
Goes can you get me some I’m like Wilson you’re gonna learn in life anything worth having is worth sleeping out in the rain for Garbo thanks a lot for giving Rob something new to rant about maybe get him off the social rant about nil and portal transfer um hey I was here’s
Here’s a little data point guys of how Bruce Pearl has has built a a magnetic brand to come to games in the Neville I noticed and this is where you got to be careful in love and marriage I noticed that Valentine’s night Auburn host South Carolina in Neville Arena and I said uh
Oh this is GNA be tricky so I asked Valerie hey how would you wouldn’t you like you went to wouldn’t you like to go a nice dinner and alurn on Valentine’s night we can stay at the Lakehouse and she said that sounds great and she said wait a minute does Auburn play
That busted but she said no I’m I’m excited to go to the game so I shelled out no small amount of money we’re gonna have dinner and go to the a basketball game on Valentine’s Day and you know hey it’s cool for me it’s cool for me to
Watch those games you know beyond the basketball to to see the student section I’ve got you know close friends of my son of my older son who he played basketball and baseball with up through high school I I coached the travel baseball team with these guys on it and
Now I I look now I look in the crowd and I see them they’re Auburn students I see them in the crowd and they’re right there in the middle of the Jungle so it’s uh it’s kind of cool to to see that going on and it’s genuine and it is that
One one thing that oburn did and I don’t know why more schools don’t do it is they catered to the students when they designed Neville Arena when they you know configured the place and decided okay they gave them their own entrance they gave him their own concession
Stands they put them in Prime seats Courtside not stuck in the corner but right there where they can truly impact the game right and and and they’ve done that so all all credit to the Auburn Administration back at that time that’s one of the other hiring Jay Jacobs I
Mean hiring Bruce Pearl was probably Jay Jacobs crowning moment at Auburn but the entire attitude towards making basketball important putting a spotlight on it and encouraging students by making them special making them feel special when they go to a basketball game even if they do have to sit out in the rain
In a tent to get tickets out and be among the first to get in there that’s cool to see Kevin I don’t know if an architect or team of Architects have ever won a basketball game but Neville arena is about as close CL as I can come
The architect that you know it was it was copycatted a little bit after um Cameron indor I think it’s fair to say and they nobody to hide that but the only the little critique I would say I wish the students would get rid of the sit down you suck cheer when somebody
F think that adds anything but fun doing it we’re probably not going to get rid of and secondly please if you’re listening Auburn basketball fans quit bringing shakers from the football game to a basketball game shakers required for basketball I have a prediction I think one of the
Smart moves of the SEC was to move the tournament to Nashville and um I think um you know it’s it’s it’s I Rob I know you go every year and I’m sure Kevin goes and it’s it’s been a big deal but I think I think
This year with all the Elite 8 and Final Four expectations across the league and having it in Nashville I think it’s be a really really big deal and it’s I think it’s going to put the SEC tournament on the map you know like like back in the
Day the Big East tournament in Madison Square Garden oh yeah ACC tournament yeah yeah no Doug Dave let me say this I love what you’re saying you go down Broadway you walk downhill to the the Bridgestone Arena we were up there for SEC media days Kevin and I were up there
And Audrey back in middle of July that was awesome and you know what uh like Monday and Tuesday Tuesday night in the lobby when we were leaving I would always see commissioner sanki and say hello to him I I mean I don’t know Kevin knows him but good God you get down on
Broadway we went to Bridgestone Arena um that place now they had a reception for everybody at SEC media days food like you wouldn’t believe but Nashville absolutely knows how to knock it out of the park when it comes to hosting events like that and but God uh I
Love the ACC tournament you watch that y’all on the ACC Network that is a great documentary because you had to win that tournament in the day to get the NCAA bid Kevin nobody has thrown out basically a line of demarcation and said quit handing out the the a you know the
Foy trophy at halftime of the ibob and and and the last last person that gave the nickname to the Auburn Alabama game was I think 1964 when Ralph sh Jordan a native of Selma Alabama who we used to go to the YMCA and Paul W gist was his mentor
There at the Y and and and he said well we’re not going to a bowl game this year but we’re going to Birmingham we’re gonna win that damn Iron Bowl that stuck ibob Kevin it’s been said here so it is said so it shall be guys I love Kevin
Thank you for saying that well I did well first of all I can’t I don’t know I don’t know who came up with ibob I it was not me I cannot take credit for that and and it doesn’t it doesn’t necessarily roll off the tongue the iron
Ball of basketball in some ways it does but I have not heard a better nickname for the basketball game but when you say ironball you immediately think Alabama Auburn Etc so yeah so I kind of like that and what’s funny is and this and this is again cool
And it shows in in a small way the growth of basketball in this state is it has engendered a debate is do we want to call it that shouldn’t we leave that name for the football game does every competition between Alabama and Auburn Auburn and Alabama have to be an iron
Ball of something can we not be Crea Cole cuck uh noted Blockhead and I say that all effect yes you know we’ve got this is this is Parks back to the old days of the state we’ve got who do we have on DriveTime radio in in Birmingham in the morning we’ve
Got a former Auburn Center and a former Alabama quarterback mroy and they’re more likely to be breaking down you know the backup center for going into spring practice than they are dissecting what happened in the ibob but they Bob and Cole was there standing behind the
Auburn bench he hates that name by the way so every so if you ever get a chance even interact with him on Twitter make sure you hashtag it throw it at him he absolutely hates it you know what I love about he’s thinking about he was again at the game Wednesday so
That was cool I’m going say this for Cole Cub for years he would come up to Memphis and Auburn clubs all over the place and speak you know to those groups but I love what I see every time I see him on social media on Twitter almost
Every time he’s with his wife and his three children he loves his family and I respect the hell out of that and and I just I think that’s cool as hell I’ve had him on the show a couple of times and I’d like to get him on more often
He’s got a crazy schedule but without a doubt I’m going to say this for the record I told this to Roman Harper and and Roman [ __ ] came to Knoxville again of SEC nation and went to Mark’s Rocky type Mark ham has the largest tailgate in Knoxville eating brisket and stuff
Roman is cool as hell and I said Roman you and Cole have the best football show on TV called read and react they have a lot of fun Doug Dean you know it I know it as Bob Dole said and the American people know it
Yeah I I I think you know the iron bow is a football game um Carolina Duke is a basketball game yeah um you know the Masters is the Masters yes it’s a major championship but it’s the Masters yeah and this keep these things separate and distinct the Kentucky Derby the Derby is
A is a Triple Crown race but it’s the Derby it’s it’s it’s much bigger than than a Triple Crown race and even though you know as Triple Crowns go Belmont is more important because you have to win the first two to get to Belmont to win a
Triple Crown and I mean let’s make it a great basketball game between Auburn and Alabama a game that’s going to be played twice a year just like Carolina Duke in basketball and it’s you know just keep it keep it separate let let it let it build its own tradition and stuff and
Don’t try to gleam on to you know the iron bow which is a which is a football game yeah and Dave what what you can tell it’s kind of transparent Kevin would be the most qual well probably Dave and Kevin the most qualified to talk about this but um it it you can
Tell the vestages of 20 30 years ago when both Alabama and Auburn probably Auburn to a greater extent were doing whatever they could to generate interest in basketball and season ticket purchases so what do you do you try to leverage the football side which was red hot at both programs here and there
Auburn was you know could have been more consistent but you don’t need um you don’t need to to have a basketball or a football reference an iron balll reference to this game and the reason I went at it is simply that it’s not one game they play twice a year yes just if
It were that epic like the ironball and football is then maybe they only be Play Once it’d be the final game of the regular season and it’s neither but I’m not mad at somebody that wants to call it that for for some sort of emphasis I
Just think we’re at a point where both of these basketball programs stand on their own they can have a fan base that’s loyal year there’s a segment of Auburn people that are more way more fired up about going to Neville than they are football games until we start winning big
Again I’d like tovw your mission so your mission and our mission if we choose to accept it is to come up with a a a a proper nickname for the Auburn Alabama Alabama Auburn Basketball rivalry they’re they twice a year basketball game that will rise to the level of play
That both teams uh reach consistently now so so let’s uh we’ll Ponder on that we’ll see if we can if we can come up with uh come up with something because in the past it was you know it was an occasional it was an occasional uh event
I can remember being on press row I think it was in may have been in Neville when Reggie Sharp and if you know who Reggie Sharp is you really know basketball in this state Reggie sharp hit about a 35f footer at the buzzer for
Auburn to win the game at the end and I barely survived my laptop barely survived the Auburn students came over they I was no impediment to them along with my on press row to getting to the court and I will say this you know there
Are a lot of ego large egos in the journalism business and I don’t I don’t exclude myself from that from that crowd Kevin you’re Kevin you’re about as classy As It Gets why you’re on this show but you know and I know because I used to feel this way a
Bit you know we used to sit court side we used to sit on press row you know if somebody came people came over for a loose ball you had to brace yourself because they might end up in your lap and now you’re in the corner you’re in
The corner in Tuscaloosa you’re in the corner in in in your corner in Coleman you’re in the corner in in the jungle I don’t mind that at all it’s not as great a seat but it’s a better experience I I’m going to start treating you guys
Like round the the horn in a minute because you know I’m the executive producer so I’m going to get like little things to freeze you guys out because I got got an announcement to say I’ve got something very special to say of course he’s he’s he’s not what but somebody’s
Going to join us here in just a moment and for before I do that I have an award that I would like to give to Rob and it’s from me to you and I just want you to know that I love you and Nick sa says congratulations you know we got the
Ironball trophy and we’d like to make that announcement during the show and so it’s special that I just want to interrupt everything I mean you know and just let everyone know that’s a big deal to us you know and that everybody should know um how important that is and uh I
Even got some I’m trying to get some music so we could like you know make it a little more official here we go well it’s not very good but nonetheless congratulations to Nick Sabin and his team and and uh we’re we’re very excited about about the Iron Bowl and and uh
There’s a special guest here uh right now uh that we would like to bring in and he needs no introduction and he came to congratulate you um buddy Martin’s gonna check into the show today and uh and he’s gonna just gonna talk to you about a few things let you know all
Right coach let’s get going wait a minute hold on one second I gotta get sure I get this picture right hold on a second wait a minute okay great show us your great picture of the water okay I’m sorry this is my office now I just want
To make sure that’s fine because this is Miami now okay so well it’s okay you can have it anyway hey guys this is like old times here and I don’t know I’m intruding on this wonderful party of this talented guys and now this looks like a professional
Group you must have a new producer is all I got we got one yeah we had Rob on earlier in the weekend hey I know I know this is armag when we’re talking about Alabama and Auburn and basketball and and by the way gymnastics after after the Florida match first time since
Florida’s lost a single match like that to Alabama first time they’ve lost since they had lost to Georgia in 2019 they won the whole match so hey I’m up on gymnastics now you know I’m brought to my Horizon I get it guys but you know what the
Question becomes and I’ll just throw us out there cuz I know Kevin will jump all over it h the question becomes now is this the end of SEC dominance as we know it and of course the great one retired and by the way any honor you can give
Him anytime you can mention his name you can’t say too much about Nick sa although I’m still a kind of bear Bry Guy I went back and covered him back in the day a little bit but hey what a fantastic run this guy’s made I just
Want to say hats off to him and the Alabama program but guys there’s a couple new sheriffs coming to town next year so it’s going to be different going to be hard to get used to these guys from texes and Oklahoma calling fine bomb show but uh that’s why I like this
Little SEC show right here guys keep up the good work and thanks for let me be on for a minute hey buddy great to see you what I what I love Brendon you know why I love that that great picture of Coach saving in front of the the Foy
Trophy for is that’s the last time we will see Sabin with a big trophy oh oh there he’s got a little I think it was a little like you know giving us some sign there with the peace sign like I’m out this is it I’m not gonna tell you taking
My car dealerships and I’m going home peace out peace out I do y’all think I I don’t see any scenario I may have said this after barar Bryant Dave but um I don’t see any scenario that a college football coach catches him and I think it’s because you’re gonna see shorter
Ten years on average yeah I think you’re right and and you go back college football in the South 1892 Deep South February 20th 1892 pedmont Park Atlanta Georgia a crowd of 5,000 fans showed up George’s mascot was a goat with a black cape with red writing Auburn won 10 to
Nothing after the game as Vince dly famously said on that SEC Saturday down south documentary the Georgia fans were so enraged by the loss they barbecued the goat so I guess you could say we had our first tailgate barbecue in the SEC but 42 of those 132 years Alabama has
Had Paul W Bryant from Fort ice Arkansas Morrow bottoms 17 years Nick Sabin from manangan West Virginia pretty strong and one thing you can say with Alabama 1990 Kevin you remember this in Doug and Dave and Brendan and Buddy people laughed at Jean Stallings record and a friend of
Mine a wise Auburn friend Bill Cameron told me this he said Just remember he was at Texas A&M in the late 60s during the Vietnam war trying to get people to go to school there at that time basically an all male military school was like trying to get people to row out
To the Titanic for happy hour um you watch what he does hoody Ingram brought him in he won 70 games in seven years be very careful as Doug Dean we all know don’t sleep on Alabama kayin he’s not he’s not Brian harson I’m gonna say it
For the record Brian harson was a jerk he had he went to the Joseph Stalin School of personality and charm so I’m just gonna say that but buddy love having you on here you might have the greatest view of any office in America and uh God when you started with us
September 11th of 2021 you started coming on the the show and I’d watched you for years on the Paul fine bomb show and I kept going this guy’s cool as hell and you know who gave me your number Lauren Smith aren what do you got well
Buddy Martin just on we can’t stop him coming around that right end on the student body right but uh he’s a hell of a writer buddy don’t ever stop writing ever stop writing you get one trip to the plate right till you can’t write no more Kevin wouldn’t you agree yeah I let
Me Echo that and and buddy I’m envious of of View and in your career but you’ve earned every second of of enjoyment right now through your through what you’ve accomplished through the decades and and as usual you made you hit on something that that has been amazing to
Me Nick Savin who by any objective measure has been the best coach in college football in its history retires and within the blink of an eye he is out the door no one’s talking about him it’s all about Caleb DS and Julian saan and Caleb dor and T Rob and
The coaches they’re going to keep or not keep the players they’re going to sign or not sign losing the portal not losing the portal and he didn’t get a proper sendoff and I would get I would tell you from what I know of him that’s the way
He wanted it yeah exactly want a parade on the way out of town he’s been in plenty of parades because his team has won national championships but isn’t it isn’t it amazing and a bit sad in this microwave Society uh to coin an old phrase that we have just moved on and we
Haven’t given him a proper send off yeah you’re right he want one just said real quick I will say he got reality though last week and his new home down there near Jupiter when he went out for lunch and had to wait a half hour for a
Table I mean life changes for everybody in her you know and by the way this is a no a good note Rob about the barbecuing of the goat there’s a goat in Tuscaloosa that will never be barbecued his name okay yeah well play the the um coach
Sabin it would blew up the Twitter sphere that he crashed and burned in the surf on a boogie board but he’s it’s good to see him relaxing and having fun he certainly earned every every bit of it um and to your point earlier Rob listen I don’t know about other fan
Bases and Rivals of Alabama I have no illusions that Alabama will quietly go will go gently into that good night yeah Thomas poem um but I do think if the B fans that are smart and realistic will will be preparing themselves for you know a transition that might not be you
Know marked by 12-0 regular seasons initially and by the way even if Sab were staying I think we’re we’re not built to have undefeated teams anymore if someone ever does my goodness they’re going to be an awfully good SEC football team yeah and you know you know Coach
Bryan remember what he would always say if I ever retire I’ll probably croak within 30 days and I I talked to uh a friend of mine who was very close to coach Bryant and Coach Bryant used to come to Memphis a lot and go to Big John Gran’s restaurant uh Airways and park
And sneak into that little side room you couldn’t do that in today’s world okay not with iPhones and people it would be crazy but coach Bryant used to love to go out with his driver we all know about Cedric and he liked to go and like there
Was a former player Mike fraia who had played at Alabama had a bad knee injury and he would like to go visit with him we they were bigger than life Kevin you’ve said it and Buddy you’ve said it about it before we didn’t see these guys
Everywhere and so if you saw them in person it was a big deal that’s a great Point Rob right there I want to jump in real quick because I in my Contract Marriage to my new wife I have to make coffee every morning for her and I don’t
I don’t have the coffee made yet so but I want to say this that that is so important Brandon I remember the time you got on the elevator at the SEC media days the first time gosh what year was that with Nick Sab oh that was great and
Saving going up in the that was that was great cuz we were in we were in uh bming where were we Alabama we in Birmingham yeah Birmingham and we’re at the hotel what hotel was that Windom winfy winfy wi something buddy it’s been a we’ve been to a few um uh
And so I’m I’m there we’re on radio row you towered over him by five in don’t give away the damn story buddy sorry I’ve got the glasses and the damn hat on all right come on there’s an Emy back here okay produc Dr for me I can’t take
It hly listen um uh I’m kidding obviously not really but buddy and I we were in uh at the Winfrey and uh I was standing outside the elevator and I didn’t uh you you know CU back then God it was all packed I don’t even know how
They had it there back then but it was all packed up and we’re sitting there and and I I’m not paying attention I think I just got my first iPhone 2 or something and I’m sitting there and we’re trying to figure it out and then all of a sudden I’m like the elevator
Opens and I kind of Shuffle P I got my press pass off I don’t know if they just thought I was a part of like the entire thing or maybe was Sabin that was just in a hurry but I get into the elevator I turn around and it’s like like the two
The two state troopers are coming on and the and they’re towering over this other shorter guy who’s coming in and and two assisted coaches and sure enough it’s Nick Sabin and I’m decked in Gator gear like I’ve got Gator Country this Gator Country hat I guess says Gator Country
On my breast pocket and he comes in he stands right next to me like this I look over I was like don’t sh sa so I’m like and then the doors closed and uh you know and then you know the elevators are jammed so you get a little while so
We’re kind of sitting there for a minute waiting for the thing to go and you know he’s pretty antsy and he kind of looks around he looking around looks at me looks up at my shirt and looks like Gators huh I said yeah yes sir he’s like MH he
Didn’t say anything else about it doors open up he didn’t say goodbye he just walked out the door I me well I had look down at him but I’m 6’4 but any he walked out the door and that was my Nick Sav sort of like brushed with Fame was
Just right next to him he was he didn’t even like he hated that I had Gator gear on you know and that goes that’s like Allah Urban Meyer Allah Steve Spurrier all these things like he just hated he hated anybody else but his team and he
Hated to lose and it kind of alludes to buddy you should talk about what’s going to happen here probably in April with Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer which is about this whole concept of losing and how much they hated to lose and and talk about the difference that in coaches and
What that really meant to them okay I don’t want to hog at the show this is to me tellal okay I’m the executive producer you’re good yeah I’ll just say this and I’ll leave uh but and I’ll I’ll tell you another time I want you I want to tell
Rob I’ve told you the story about the great Jack harson uh being with barar Bryant and another writer when they went out to an event and and bear got absolutely snoker and they took him home surprise pour him in bed Harmon was there saying y’all want to kill him Papa
Yeah anyway that’s another story but I do want to mention that we are having well we hope we’re having we planning Urban and Steve signed off on it a high Summit AT spurgers ground Grill in in April probably the week first week of April when the the orange blue game is where
We’re going to have a special charity thing of raising money coach spur and Coach Meer are going to be there and we’re going to break down the winning years and what made them so successful at Florida because they want everything there they have a very strong relationship now with each other I think
It’s going be unusual to be able to be there and hear them talk about those times those games those moments when they hated losing that’s what they said said their bond was there was we both hated losing you’re right and so looking forward to that event to be announced
Maybe you guys can make it down if not maybe we can stream back to you but I just want to say thanks to everybody out there for the wonderful greetings and War wishes on the marriage I’m very excited about I’m married for a week now and looking
Forward to my time with my new wife Dawn and it’s time for me to go make her coffee where she has a right to void all the contracts because it’s in my vows I would make coffee every morning she will enter the transfer if you’re not careful exactly that look at
That picture that’s the actual wedding and that is the church and see what it says on the door we couldn’t get over Brendon and I were back there doing best man war room that’s what was call war [Laughter] room that’s awesome buddy look man having you on here is cool as hell I
Know last few months you’ve been on Saturday mornings but I mean it I always go back I say this every show it’s not about one individual Pat Sullivan wins the Heisman Trophy 1971 that was the speech I still go back to as a little kid he goes I know there
Have been many Award winners who appreciate who deserve this award much more than me but I can assure you no one appreciates it more than I do and when you go out on that field it’s not just one individual it’s an entire group that’s what Sidelines is we have an
Unbelievable team so thank you everybody I know we’re we’re we’re changing our times uh Brendan I know we’re going shorter longer on some different shows we’re about out of time on here but unbelievable uh put it up there for Kevin let people know how they can
Follow you the Buddy Martin Show and all this stuff and we’ll tag out but uh unbelievable half work Saturdays again Rob I know I I know buddy too well he he he’s going to be out so we’re just going to say goodbye to Buddy he doesn’t wait
That he’s too big time I love you Dad talk to you soon we got to get rid of Buddy he not going to hang out for your clothes dude it’s not gonna happen look that’s old school man like like what time what time am I on oh okay okay I’ll
Be there in 20 seconds before I’m on and I don’t want to wait 15 seconds it’s that’s the old jump in here Doug yeah I was just gonna say uh the urban I don’t want to be unkind because I hope he turns it around Billy Napier but an
Urban me Steve spur Gathering that’s got to be uncomfortable for Billy naier well that yeah I think that’s the idea honest to God I’m not gonna lie I think it’s the idea I think he needs to know because he’s a little too comfortable with losing in my opinion
Because you see a lot of these postgame press conferences and he’s just a little too comfy with the loss and you know and and I don’t know I think that’s a big difference between these these kind of iconic coaches you know as we say goodbye to Harbaugh as we say goodbye to
Sain you know like these guys like there’s a there it’s just a difference yeah and uh you know and you didn’t want to let him down right that was the big deal no when you lose Kevin much more um Swanky set but it’s still Savant
Saturday so I gotta go back to the Bear Bryant show that used to come on with Charlie Thorton and Coach Bryant Sunday afternoon we used to play an over under game and what will the over under on how many seconds until you could see the smoke coming out from behind the the the
The the bowl of Golden Flake potato chips Kevin let let him know I love what I love that’s was behind the the the bowl of golden Flakes and usually was about 18 seconds before the smoke know some smart that’s some smart kid stuff right there Kevin there was never
Any drinking or smoking at those deals up at Still Waters uh when coach D would get the media together no card playing nothing no no Shenanigans huh yeah they almost threw me out of there because I wasn’t a smoker or a drinker so I I didn’t really fit in especially this
Punk kid from Pennsylvania took took them took us a while to warm up to each other well I know one thing I watched your career I remember I was in college when you came 84 85 you started doing the beat and in your ear yeah and I would see you
At at press conferences and stuff like that and I was a college kid you know but obviously you’re not any older than I am but it was kind of intimidating but uh you just you you bring so much to this show as does Doug as does Dave and
Brendan and Buddy and again it ain’t about me it’s basically I’m an advice aggregator or a quarterback but having Brendan on here this is this is a lot of fun people journalism is alive and well when you got people like Doug Dean Dave Tomkins Brendan Martin buddy Martin
