99% of golfers hit the golf ball incorrectly and what this means is that when you hit the ball your Club head overtakes the hands like this now the problem when your Club head overtakes the hands this does a few things one of the things it does is it produces more

Launch so this means that instead of like a professional golfer who hits down on the ball as an amateur golfer you’re typically adding more LOF this is one of the reasons why you don’t hit the ball as far could be also the reason why you

Hit the ball too high and you lack that compression other problems with this type of motion is it makes you more vulnerable of mish hitting if we’re hitting the golf ball this way then the club is much more likely to hit the ground early or we’re more likely to hit

The equator or the top of the golf ball again instead of hitting the ball very much this way so the question is why does that movement Prevail from most amateur golfers and the reason is because we don’t quite understand the functionality of the triail hand and

That’s what I’m going to talk about very much in today’s video so to get started what we need to do is we need to understand a few things things the first thing is that when we get set up to the golf ball as I’m demonstrating here our shoulders will be pretty parallel

Towards the target so will our hips so will our feet but when we hit the golf ball that shouldn’t be the case the hips are going to be more open anything 30 40° the chest going to be a little open and so are the shoulders your shoulders

Are going to be you know 10 15 maybe 20° open at the point of impact so what that does look is if I get set up here okay you can see the back of my lead wrist see the way it’s relatively sort of CED now if I take this position and I open

Up my body you can now see the way that my shoulder location changes so the back of my lead wrist starts to flatten okay so what this means is that at the point of impact my club face needs to sort of theoretically be more open okay so if I

My club face is square at a dress with the square shoulders theoretically if my shoulders are out open impact my club face needs to be pointing more open to still be pointing in the correct sort of Direction now the question is that’s so important it’s so important because in

The down swing the big movement that we need to make sure we’re getting is the right arm staying more upward now you’d have heard about this thousands of times before loads of the most iconic golfers of Our Generations have talked about dropping shoulders driving elbows and forearms pointing up towards the sky but

None of this will work unless you understand that you need to be slightly open at the point of impact that means slightly open you don’t need to be like spinning across the ball Okay so that’s the first thing and you can practice that can’t you now so you can get

Yourself set up where your Club face is nice and square at a dress and then just open yourself up like so so your lead wrist will start to flatten your hands will go further ahead again this is a byproduct of the little bit of rotation

That you need and just get used to that position of your body because the body’s going to have to move this way now once we get the body moving we can now start focusing our attention as we initiate the down swing on a couple of movements

The first one is your elbow needs to move towards your hip okay we have to get this the reason why is my elbow needs to move towards my hip because it helps my hands move over towards the ball and that’s a big thing like I said

We don’t want to be doing this cuz that’s how we’re going to go back to that scooping you start scooping and rotating you got double trouble so we need to make sure the elbow is moving down towards the side of the body but here’s the big one we have to allow that

Arm to straighten and we have to keep the forearm pointing up towards the sky and it’s the combination of both of those that really are the magic moving golf you see if I show you from the sideon perspective if I start moving my body nicely as we demonstrated earlier

Where I allow it to be slightly open upon the point of impact if I can get my elbow moving to the side of my body and keep the right forearm pointing up towards the sky that helps me get that club coming down on plane and then I can

Drop it down on the back of the ball coming in towards the impact now there is one thing that I want to mention in this video because you may have heard this hundred thousands of times before the question is what is it that most amateur do and what is it likely to feel

Like well most amate when they hit the golf ball their Trail forearm points too much towards the target okay like so and that’s what creates this sort of scooping action we want to keep the forearm more up towards the sky see what I’m doing here so again if my forearm

Goes out more towards my target like so as opposed to up towards the sky see the way that keeping it up towards the sky brings me back on to plane so I can deliver that club nicely on the back of the golf ball as I’m demonstrating very

Much there so that’s why that is such a key and the feeling that you need to have is as you initiate the downswing although this arm is going to very much straighten you need to make sure that your elbow is leading your hands okay so see as I start this downswing position

Here so either the way my elbow is always leading my hands you never want your hands leading your elbow like so elbow leading the hands as we allow this arm to straighten and that’s the real magic move that you want at the start of the downswing and that’s why all my

Students that I work with if we do do a bit of rope training we don’t just do this okay we lead with the elbow okay and the scary thing is when you start to do that guess what that club face is going to feel more open but

We need that we need to be brave and start the down swing let the elbow lead as the arm straightens as we turn and you’re going to have to be brave with that feeling of that club face being slightly open because as I explained at the beginning of the video that’s going

  1. What I can't seem to reconcile in my head, is how in the heck does the club make it to the gound with the forearm pointed to the sky.

  2. Also for me dropping right shoulder down, as I open the right forearm and elbow towards the sky as you suggest. greatly facilitates my ability to shift my weight onto the lead foot- a big problem . for me. Brilliant video.

  3. You say we don't want to scoop and rotate, but doesn't the pivot eliminate the negative effects of an early release?

  4. Not for the first time, I am getting a little confusing. How does this reconcile with Pete Cowan’s advice to spin the right forearm downward as you approach the ball on the downswing?

  5. Hi Russell. Been subscribed with you for years. For a Iong time playing at a reasonable level, and always liked to introduce the heel before the toe on the downswing. You were the first, and to this day the only person making me aware of the trail arm, and the elbow first. For the last 3 weeks I have thought of the trail arm facing the sky, which is an exaggerated version of heel first. I have taken this to (my) extreme when practicing, and gone back to my 7.5 degree 983k Titleist and the feeling of being a great swing is returning. My (feel) has to be swinging well right of target, but must (actually) forcefully push off left foot to create the firm left side, and direction to target. I do still take lessons at age 70, and between those, and taking in really good info. from yourself, really looking forward to the new season. It does really make a difference being retired and able to practice 5 to 6 times per week. I do realise the commitment in time and energy to make the videos, so would like to say thanks again for your excellent posts.
