Hey everyone welcome back Chris McCormack joined by Blake Smith and today we are at our Scottsdale HQ Studio testing new ping s159 wedges so new offering from ping and Blake why don’t you give us a little rundown what we’re going to be looking at today so as you
Can see they’ve changed the shape here a little bit more of a tour inspired wedge here they’ve entered into a tour level area here although keeping it pretty easy to hit Ping’s all about that they have six different grind options two new ones that we’ll talk about but overall
This wedge is really pretty all of the wedges every grind looks the same from the top so you really basically don’t know which wedge you have in your hands when you’re testing it which is a really cool thing but when we hit these uh we’ll be going through what grind yeah
We’ve got a fun uh fun little test set up for us in the bay but before we jump in there make sure give us a like subscribe to the channel and uh let’s see if we can hold one out today let’s do it so out of the six offerings that
We’re going to have in s159 first one we’re going to start with W grind so this is the fullest sole the biggest footprint but one thing I want you to pay attention to since they changed the Optics at a dress everything’s going to look very very similar so let’s get real
Picky on feel of how the different grind and bounce options you know basically work for you and your swing I know we’ve got a fun little setup here number seven Pebble Beach two are just wrapped up there a little while while ago Y and uh we’ve got this set up testing 58° wedges
So only about a 90 yard shot yep so let’s uh let’s jump into this and see what you think about these new s159 I mean overall with this Hydro pearl finish here looks really Ultra Premium I really like that uh being here in the desert if it’s if it’s too shiny that’s
Going to Blind me once in a while I think everybody knows when they sit up and they’re about ready to hit a chip shot and it’s like d and now you’re now you’re Visions impaired you can’t really see you got to hit it anyways that’s that’s no good but ping knows that
They’re out here they made it so it doesn’t shine it’s really nice there’s some relief here toe and heel so you’re going to be able to to work this around this is really basically meant to be hit more on just fullon shots rather than exposing the bounce too much and softer
Conditions so I mean we’re going to be testing it basically at a full swing this is about as far as I’m going to want to hit a 58° perfect uh but nice soft conditions see if we can make one go in the hole a no 40 mph headwinds
Today I mean right off the bat that feels really good yeah good audio there too yeah and I just hit it to about 4 feet so that one I missed I can see where I hit it I I missed it out on the toe just a little bit didn’t really feel
Like that so um it it absorbed the shock a little bit so that’s that’s something about ping ping really widens out their sweet spot they do a really good job with that so with an with an ultra premium product here tour inspired and it’s easy to hit I mean that’s wonderful
Absolutely and they’ve carried over that elastomer insert that they had in the Glide family so despite the fact that it looks like that traditional blade style wedge still plenty of Technology built under the hood allowing our player oh hello yeah allowing our player an opportunity to miss it a little bit and
Still see some forgiveness and consistency yeah and that one that one was more in the middle and it ripped I mean that was a ton of spin there yeah the amount of spin on that pretty impressive yep that’s a little right I wouldn’t be happy with myself on
That one but still spinning back taking the hill let’s go one time ah it’s going to stop on us that that looks like the place that I want to hit it just a little bit far right and then I can make it but overall when I’m looking when I’m doing an
Indoor wedge fitting because you know there’s some challenges indoors there’s challenges Outdoors but when I’m doing an indoor wedge fitting I’m looking at the strikes so majority of these strikes are between two and five grooves that’s what I’m looking for so if it’s not that way shaft might be wrong grind might be
Wrong delivery patterns might be wrong there’s some things in there that might be way off now I missed one high on the toe that’s that one that I missed but the other two were about one two three four grooves High okay so right about in the middle but yeah overall that’s
That’s that felt really good so next one that we have here is actually s so the S grind kind of falls into that that cheeseburger per se that’s going to work for the majority of players out there and has been a tried andrue grind and bounce combination for years so curious
Ious to see your feedback on this guy as you move from the W into s so it’s basically the W but with some some relief on the trail Edge that’s what it looks like to me that’s usually kind of how that goes they’ll start with one and
Then they’ll start to shave off the back part of that so this is really for somebody that doesn’t have as much of a steep angle of attack and then comes out of it without scooping too much right so it’s going to be somebody that’s going to drive
Through a little bit more that’s what I’m looking at okay S I look at it and I go okay that’s that’s probably a standard that’s that’s where I that’s a standard grind that’s kind of the S idea that’s fair let’s see if uh you can take your standard grind and make one for
Us that was flushed I might hit it a little too hard wow that was that was that felt really good and I hit most wedges out on the toe one because I’m a little bit Steep and across it I’m trying not to hook it
And then when I hit it on the toe it launches a little bit right I don’t want to wedge launching left left wedges I’m not interested in absolutely cut spin gets away from you a little bit numbers not quite as consistent coming into the green left uh left movement with a wedge
Is not ideal I am flushing this I got to take some off and maybe you’re just a standard guy Blake right just standard grind standard across the board not standard length though that one’s really good that one go oh so that’s the flight I Look to do
Usually a little bit of a lowlighted spinner but this one felt really good I hit them all basically right in the center the worst one I was five grooves up the last two were right in the middle so it was like three grooves up so okay
This one fits a little better I say definitely getting warmer so next one I have for you is going to be the be grind so this is a new addition to the s159 family this year so this particular grind is only going to be available in those higher lofted categories so going
Into that 58 and 60° wedge so let’s go ahead and see what you think about this guy all right I’m going to correct myself this actually looks like the W but with a little bit more heel and toe so the standard took off the back this
One has the back of this so it’s it’s pretty high bounce as far as Effectiveness goes okay but it t it just took some of the some of the heel and the toe off so when you take the heel and the toe off you can open it then you
Can tow it down yeah allows you to camber the wedge a little bit get a little more versatility in your shot shaping and shot selection for sure that one might have been a little heavy but again that misses pretty good I mean if I’m at P Beach plan number seven and
I hit it to about 8T I’m going to be just fine with that that was flushy spin that’s the spin we’re looking for I just need to hit a little less so next one I have for you is actually the second new addition to s159 family
This is going to be the H grind so this guy’s going to be available in that 54 to 60 Loft package so this guy is designed essentially for some versatility and also a little bit more craftiness around the green we’ll say so the H grind stands for a half moon grind
So visually what do you see there yeah I mean that’s a half moon this is a pretty popular kind of GR grind especially when you get a wedge that is customized this is really for shot versatility so it gives the player a really wide arsenal of manipulation for
This wedge for a variety of different shots so whether there’s somebody that camers It Forward back lays the face open likes to hit those kind of deadhand soft shots off the toe yep I mean really really opens up a lot of opportunity for the player to get creative around the
Green that one’s going to spin and that is the area I want to go in oh it didn’t take a didn’t take a left early enough very very different sound transitioning from W now down into the H that tour feedback tour players are looking for that specific sound and feel
They know that and they made it here I mean in previous generations you get into the more full sole design little bit larger footprint More Bounce a at a dress had a little bit different shape this guy’s kind of become a staple in ping family of wedges yeah in my opinion
Kind of a cheat code for the guy that struggles out of the bunker yeah I’ve said that before I know that there are people that absolutely love this design I didn’t grow up playing ping i2s or ping zings for that matter that this is this is not my cup of tea okay that
Doesn’t mean that it’s not good so getting out of the bunker let me point out this bottom part here that is Paramount so when they have that big of a camber that’s going to dig through that sound sand and then it’s going to come out with a bounce they have a dip
In here that dip right there really helps channel so when it comes through you’ve got two different kinds of bounces you have the entry bounce and the exit bounce so there’s a lot of really cool technology in this so if you recall there was uh kind of a Resurgence
Of this wedge shape and Design when the uh when the old Groove uh ruling came into play with the USGA and they decided that they were going to oh that’s a that’s a pretty handy shot there but when the usgaa decided they were going to modify the groove Rule and all of a
Sudden we started seeing tour players go back and find these old I2 designs so in the Newfound popularity ping decided to bring that design back and it’s basically been a stable in every wedge offering they’ve had since that time period yep let me just point out I absolutely flushed that that was that
Felt really good I mean that could be the uh the tool you’ve been missing all these years H that one not so s and that was a little clunky talked yourself out of it yeah yeah that was really high on the face that might be the worst one of the
Day now we say has to check the box on look sound feel and if it does not check the box in one of those categories then might not be the one for you yeah and that one’s off the green almost last one for you so this is going to be a little
Bit more player oriented great for those firm conditions so this is our tea grind so going down to 6° of Bounce lot of material to remove from that sole what’s first impressions for you it’s like a half moon but then you get to the huzzle part and it doesn’t there’s not a real
Quick relief there it keeps with the bounce yeah that was flushed again a little different audio there yeah I hit it so good that it went too deep so that’s something too ball speed and all that kind of stuff is not necessarily a big thing in wedges but it
Can be an indicator on how well you’re hitting it so if you’re not hitting the center riding up the grooves you’re losing some of the some of thei that that is in that wedge you’re losing some of that you’re getting too too far out toward the toe or the heel that one was
Pretty much right where I want to hit a wedge and we were talking about tour inspiration they’re offering now based upon tour feedback and requests from tour they’ve added this tea grind in a 62° wedge for s159 family yep so now I got to dial it back a little
Bit okay that one’s going to really really rip let’s go let’s go let’s go oh oh it’s two feet all right all right we we’ll give you that one that’s close it’s pretty good yeah that felt really good I mean that’s when I open it up and I make
A shot like that and I can absolutely hit it right in the middle you can see right where I’m hitting it sure I mean it’s taking the cover off the ball it’s at about three grooves high right where I’m hitting that good test of all six
Grinds in the s159 so with that let’s let’s take a look at some data and kind of walk through those numbers all right all 58° yep same shaft same length same lie and very different numbers yeah so walk us through some of these that you’re looking at that kind of jump out
To you this is really cool cuz this is why you do a wedge fitting this exactly this is exactly why with ball speed ball speed is really important obviously for drivers but this can also be an indicator in how it was hitting it so when you look at it you’re like okay
Well the S grind and the T grind those are the two best ball speeds and then you look at it you go okay what the standard deviation look like standard deviation on the S grind was 7 so was really I was I was basically hitting the
Center of that Golf Club over and over again absolutely and then 101 yard carry I flushed that thing I couldn’t not flush it so as far as full shots go that es grind’s money and I knew it was I fit people into that all the time when
They’re like I just use this basically for full shots that’s cool when I’m hitting wedge shots I really want it to to be a paintbrush so I look at okay second place I like that tea grind so with that tea grind I’m not losing a lot it’s not really a distance thing the
Standard deviation is zero that’s as good as it gets hard to argue with zero and then with ping you got to talk about spin consistency the most consistent spin was that s grind again cuz I was hitting it right in the middle every time and that that right there when when
I’m looking at all these numbers and the worst was 516 that’s really pretty good in addition to the finish that we’re used to seeing yep offering in a midnight finish so you had kind of mentioned the glare and just that struggle that we have out here in the
Desert midnight finish is going to be available pretty we’ve got six different grinds six different bounce options and really little something for everybody and that’s a wrap for us guys thank you as always for joining us if you like this video make sure give us a like

Are these the Glide replacements?
Irrelevant video from one of the best fitters. Several wedge grinds tested at “full” swing? Test them from tight lies, bunkers, 40 yards max to match attack angle. These guys know better.
