Everyone welcome back bet Spurs golf here for our first look at the 2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open uh first I’m G to talk and congratulate at the top boy Ron Claus PJ splits one1 taking home a uh a winner there on Windom triple digits to get started what’s going on
Buddy yeah you never want to end a tournament after 54 holes unless you have the winner after the third round so um yeah a little disappointed though still you know always love seeing Pebble Beach and want to see all four rounds but um yeah it’s been a little bit of a drought
And it’s just you know obviously I don’t think I think most people would agree wam Clark probably shouldn’t be 100 to one ever considering how he played last year but um yeah we’re just seeing long shot after long shot um at the start of the year so
Far yeah it’s been absolutely wild you know 54 holes we were forced to watch uh I guess maybe not forc you didn’t have to watch did you take in any of the uh the Liv in the afternoon because we had no football and no PGA uh did you take
In any of the Liv golf no I still um I have yet to tune in um and uh I don’t know I just you know I know they’re picking up a little momentum here and um you know with more players leaving you know I probably should start but um it’s just I
Mean yesterday was the day for them right if you can’t get off the momentum of yesterday like to capitalize yeah yeah for sure yeah yeah yeah I get it man like I people are talking you know you see the the Neeman clip at the end where he’s being
Interviewed and you know within the first breath he’s you know I’m not in the majors and it’s like man that you knew man like you that was that was kind of the you bite the Apple kind of a thing too right so it’s like it’s really
Hard it was good golf like it was entertaining to watch because these are familiar names that we I guess maybe are clamoring to to watch and compete on the tour regularly um the team element and you could tell it dude I don’t know you’ll see it and maybe
I’ll send you a clip I’ll find it Rah this is rah’s first experience right and Rah comes off and is like off of 18 and he’s he’s heated because he had a chance down the stretch and like the F the interview that person wants to talk to
About how excited he is like get his team win in his first event and he he like he is so disconnected from the thought that like his team won is is not where he is at and like later they champagne and they’re celebrating that is not where Ram’s Head was at he’s like
I had this golf tournament won and I lost it um so that thing is that piece is I think so hard that they want you to get into the team thing they want you to buy into the team element and like if I’m a fan of a specific team I was
Joking like you can’t even see where all the teams are because they were listing a million players in the individual and they only list like four of the teams like ah they’re trying so hard it’s it’s a it’s it’s bizarre but hey I want to watch cam Smith I want to watch Brooks
Make a run I want to see if like you know Sergio can make a pot like it was you know guys that we’ve been sweating and watching in the tour for years with you know club music in the background which is hard to take it seriously so
Yeah it that was their shot so I’m interested to see what the numbers are if they even report the numbers or anything like that because uh you know there’s nothing else on they were the bell of the ball you know yeah I’m I’m a traditionalist and and all these things
And so it’s just it’s just hard for me to even take the dive um no I get it but you know it was on a course we’ve seen before you know myoba you know pretty decent course um so yeah you know I think the venue plays into that as well
Um but um yeah we’ll see as we go forward here if they continue the momentum yeah yeah the tough part is I’m with you like I you don’t want to like be staunch and you know traditionist and hold on of my ways too much but like it
Was created to disrupt not disrupt in like a good way there’s some things that are created to disrupt and that can bring good and I think like good will come from the PGA Tour eventually or whatever will come of the world golf whatever will happen this was designed
To this is a money grab for these guys like I you I can’t feel bad for nean that he’s not in he knew what he was doing um you know Rah Pam Brooks those guys are in a different in a different boat you know they have their their card
Punch to the big events so yeah it was just interesting because again they had they were the only thing on onless watch the Emmys or whatever was it the Grammys or whatever was on watch that I want to watch some sports so I’m gonna watch a a
Flag football NFL Pro Bowl thing like give me some golf so uh I took a dive down the back nine there and uh yeah I wanted it to be better but again good to see some guys that uh that we like to see so yeah let’s jump into waist

Get all the picks uh you read all the Articles again you can get access to the rabbit hole which is uh you know I think Ron’s lovech child here spent uh countless hours in uh and putting this out and in tweaking and uh you know we’ve done so much with this and now
Really excited we have some new stuff coming very very soon uh some additions to this but again the most uh I think comprehensive pre tournaments uh in tournament conditioning model that you can absolutely uh build and chop up all this really cool data uh let’s talk
About the course in the field here Ron before we jump into the rabbit hole and start chopping some stuff up you know what are we looking at again it’s not a designated signature event field but still strong field we did have uh a withdraw this morning at the very top of
The board with uh Victor hin but talk to me about the field talk to me about the course and uh what do we think matters here yeah so a little change of pace this week um you know we’ve had all these course rotations pram setup so kind of back to normal tournament golf
Uh you know you got a little bit of a smaller field 136 players um but yeah I mean feels pretty decent though at the top you know even with Victor with drawing you know you still have six of the top 10 um and so yeah not a
Signature event this year like last year so you know the winning person actually drops from 20 million to 8.8 million um but yeah you know this has always been like you said a very popular event you know the people’s open um so yeah the field is good um and yeah just overall
In general you know the course um par 71 um and just getting into the rabbit hole already here you know you can look at Desert Mountain courses you know because this is um Scottdale where they’re playing um here in the sonor mountains you know you have the second
Highest elevation out of any course played on tour and so you know I think there’s a really uh there’s a real scale in understanding um distance control you know when you get into this thin Desert Air and so you know you have some of these other desert courses they played
Whether it’s you know TPC Summerland um you know um you know there’s a couple other ones um that have been in the desert you know over the past couple years that you know if you go to the rabbit hole you click on that desert um Tab and you know it’ll pull up those
Courses um so I think that’s um you know just one of the things I’ll be looking at this week for sure um and then if you want to kind of get a little more into the actual course itself um you know ball striking is really big this week um
You know especially um when you have these par fives that are very reachable so um you know there’s kind of been a trend that players who are more aggressive and going for the green who can you know kind of set up Eagle and birdie chances um you know are um you
Know ones to Target this week for sure uh course history also matters this week it is the fourth most predictive course on tour um and another thing is and I know this trend hasn’t really started this year but you know when you look at the average odds of the winter here over the
Past 15 years it’s been you know 44 to one so kind of a tournament where you know we’re seeing players who are some of the best who are winning um and taking advantage of this course and so um even nine of the t nine of the last
10 winners have either one the players or they have been major Champions and so you know it’ll be interesting to see if that continues week yeah that that’s interesting too that’s another filter you can filter we just looked at course type you can look at Desert as Ron mentioned you can look
At some of the TBC courses uh too because I know there’s some uh some leaderboard overlap in terms of what’s happened historically over it you know srats for instance which you wouldn’t always necessarily think uh but there is some of that too in terms of you know
Some water holes and some of that stuff too so you want to look at that you can again some options that you won’t be able to find anywhere else in terms of terms of course type so uh yeah it is uh again still still a loaded field Scotty
At the top of the board you know the early odds board not surprising you know DraftKings has had a you know they essentially treated this as a major they’ve had this market up for you know all all winter uh and Scotty was down to like three and change reopened you know
Most spots around five or six which makes a lot of sense but there’s you know these talked about talk about the the greens here too these are fast uh I believe you poke the hole because historically these would be captured as Bermuda greens these are not Bermuda
Greens these are I believe very fast POA trivialis is that correct yeah so PO trivialis is very similar to bankr it’s like very pure um it’s not anything close to you know the PO on the west coast that we’ve just seen you know at Pebble Beach for
Example um and so yeah there’s about seven courses total on tour that use this surface and you know it’s simply the Bermuda even in you know the desert here in Arizona you know still gets cold at night and so this time of year so um The Bermuda still dormant and uh here at
Scottdale there’s a little bit of Ry grass mixed in but for the most part it’s just poetry Vialis surface um and again players Rave about it being pretty much the best surface to put on tour um and so yeah so um you know speeds with
It being in the desert drier um you do have a little increased green speed here uh but yeah this uh these greens are not Bermuda like a mistake a lot of people make for for this week yeah yeah the greens you have seen that sometimes can play you know desert too
Especially if it’s dry F very fast and firm um greens can be a little bit harder to hold from an approach standpoint too uh which is interesting so just to walk people through this the first time seeing the Rabbit Hole uh obviously we have the field here for the
Phoenix Open uh we should have an update this week where uh we’ll be able to have multiple courses loaded at the same time so we’ll be able to take a look at the Phoenix um you while it’s going on but we’ll also be able to look at the
Genesis field when that populates on Friday as well so that’s something that’s new you want to take a look at the seasons if you want to just capture what’s going on in 2024 is that sample size gets a little bit larger you want to look back at previous years you can
Mess around with that we were defaulting here to The Strokes gain view but again there are a multitude of views that you can go ahead and take a look at here again m the time frame and along with obviously the rounds played we already messed around with some of the region
And course type stuff as well if you want to look at specific course history for Scottdale you can simply go into the course and select it um again you want to want to back out your time frame to make sure you’re obviously capturing you know multiple years of that course as
Well uh we default to draftking scoring on the DFS size you can see there are no current salaries as we record this on a early on a Monday morning but you can also get FanDuel in there as well where it gets really crazy and a lot of fun
Uh is you can go into the filter by condition section and you can filter and Shop this stuff up uh in so many ways scoring conditions course length field strength you want to break down firstr leader stuff uh for Showdown or uh first round leader bats again you can if you
Continue to scroll down here if you’re listening to the podcast you’re gonna want to watch this on YouTube obviously we’re walking through this is going to be a little bit more of a Hands-On viewing thing uh but you’re going to be able to see you want to take a look at
These po trivial greens let’s do it uh let’s take a look at see who’s putting well here um again you you to scroll down you could see things you want less than driver you’re going to find that anywhere else chop up some less than driver stuff and force layup courses
Ron’s done a lot of work on classifying where those places are um versus driver heavy you know we’ve done driver heavy a few times here of lates you know driver heavy I think appli to uh the farmers when we were over there at Tor so um
Lots of different ways for you to do it but while we’re here let’s just take a look we talked about these poet trival screens uh just to show people what that looks like let’s back out to a little bit of a larger sample let’s look at the
Last three years see what kind of sample size we get now that I’ve selected a condition you can see I got a little dot here that tells me I did and this is also linked here as well this tells me the number of rounds that we’re capturing through here um the number of
Actual rounds and the number of shot length rounds as well which is important um but you also want to set minimum rounds you can too kind of filter out the noise for some of the smaller sample people uh you can go ahead and do that
As well we just do it to to show so uh looking at the last 50 rounds played we’re getting a pretty good sample number of guys here looking at these poetry Alis putting greens um we’re getting 90 guys in the field that are going to be captured the last three
Years 50 rounds swinging Sammy Burns you know that’s hey this a good putter uh putting travels you look at this list here these are just uh for the most part good Putters and I think that speaks to what Ron’s talking about is people telling you know the
Quotes after the fact is hey these are really pure uh we’re getting you know a true role here so that makes sense that just the higher level Putters are obviously gonna find some uh some benefits there as well interesting to see where like someone like Scotty who
Is uh obviously you know sometimes can have some struggles uh here we go 22 not bad uh interesting to see Xander pretty good putter down in the middle of the pack there as well so again one of the many many many many things uh that you
Could do here with the uh with the rabbit hole but where you going to start r what’s like an anchor stat this week uh in terms of like modeling in terms of where you want to start your research and just really quick to just to go back and you just looking at the
Course history here which you know um I’ve already posted on the Discord for for users and um we’ll be in the Articles coming up this week as well but um you you have a a group of players here obviously Scotty’s one back toback years um but you look at even going back
And I know a couple these guys like Ricky Fowler Hideki matama have had their success here more in 2016 2017 you know going back you know four or five years um you’ve got four players whove gained over 55 Strokes um on this course since 2016 obviously F monama Justin
Thomas great history here Xander schofl six times he’s played here’s never finished worse than 17th so that kind of again speaks to what we said at the beginning where you have you know not long shots winning here more of the upper tier players um having success course so that’s just another
Interesting angle to look at kind of if you’re if you believe in course history this week um to look at you know this group of players who have just kind of dominated here but yeah um so for this week you know there’s there’s a lot of
Different angles um off the te I think is kind of where I’ll be starting and okay I mean honestly it’s ball striking it’s you know which is obviously off the te combined with approach um so you have the longest driving distance on tour at 305 yards off the te obviously the
Elevation Advantage kind of adds to that but but yeah like you said this is a on the rabbit hole driver heavy week you know most players are kind of free to bomb away um off the tea here and so you know we are pretty much the only site
That has total driving and so you know there’s not a lot of Hazards um you know you do have a few desert areas you know you do have some water water hazards especially on the back nine um the rough is only two Ines so it’s really not that
Penal um so yeah um I’m looking for guys who are obviously have this distance off the te and who are accurate so total driving for me um and this is such a unique horse though because you know you can go back and look and there’s there
Are some players who have had a lot of success here web Simpson JT Poston Matt coocher High finishes who are not longer hitters and so you know it’s definitely not the only thing you should be looking at it’s not just distance and if you can bomb it um so that’s that’s one
Component for me um and then um if you look at obviously approach is key um 125 to 200 I believe it’s like 56% of all approaches are from that range which is way above the tour average um so that’s kind of the the approach ranges I’ll be
Honing in on um but yeah that’s you know off the te you know so total driving for me um it will be kind of my main stat uh for starting with off the te yeah no that makes sense um you also have you know the That Mountain Air too a little
Thinner that Desert Air too so distances you know probably has helped the cooes and the web systems of the world get a little bit more bank for the buck to uh you know in a course like this where you know and that’s part of the experience thing too is getting an understanding of
Your ball flights uh what your you know your distances are obviously technology nowadays makes that pretty easy guys coming for the first time we saw that last year right where the you know Signature Events guys aren’t typically making their way here still navigating this place fairly well and those are top
Of the board Elite guys week in and week out but yeah interesting to see from a total driving standpoint you know these uh you know cam young getting a big bump obviously off of distance a at the top uh havin would have made a lot of sense
Here obviously it was going to be super short probably you know close at 10 or maybe a little bit shorter uh Tyler Duncan getting carried by his uh his accuracy but you know feels like added distance for Tyler Duncan for him to be 46 that does not feel like uh Tyler
Duncan so you know maybe last three six rounds he’s uh he’s you know swinging a little bit hard swinging from his toes a little bit so yeah again you can go in if you want to make a model all you got to do is simply hit this little plus
Button here uh and it will add it to your uh mixed condition section and then you can go in and you know I can show you that real quick you can you know add weights to it uh we’ll add total driving again just for the sake of uh of showing
Folks how to do it you can make a little note here if you want to put it like if you said here you know this is last 36 rounds you know uh total driving you could do whatever that’s just for you or whatever you want to do let’s also look
At the approach stuff is uh Z Ron was talking about approach obviously key no matter where you are you said fault here to five years but I’m also in in rounds so it’s GNA only capture these rounds so you can again you know mess around with this in so many
Ways yeah another unique thing that we have when you looking at the approach here is um and you know the winning score here hasn’t hit 20 under I don’t think since 2013 so it’s not really a birdie Fest but you know scorable a lot of scoreable holes here and players who
Are aggressive do get rewarded here and so you know one way to measure aggressiveness you know obviously with you know three very reachable par fives is you know we have this set of stats you see the gfg stands for going for the green and so you can basically look at
Aggressiveness here because this going for the green percentage shows you which players you know on average you know are attacking these holes and so looking at the ranking the percentages um that’s a great way to look at aggressiveness especially you know going for par fives and you obviously have some drivable par
Fours on tour you have one this week um and so you can kind of look at that number and get an idea of okay which players are are playing more aggressively and then obviously you have which of them are hitting the green which of them are actually getting
Birdies when they do go for the green so this is a this is a great week um here at Scott sale to look at that that little subset of data yeah no good call for sure some other you know unique things too if you want to break up
Approach into Fairway or rough uh you know to get a sense of look if we’re dialed in from a total driving standpoint we’re going to hopefully be in some Fairways I can kind of look at these proximity buckets that Ron was talking about to see who populates well
Uh in those instances you want to look at it from the rough uh you could do the same thing you can also do that from an around the green standpoint which you know because these greens are firm and fast I do think around the green or you
Know short game in some sense does matter here as well uh there are different ways to capture that here too you can look at um you know some of these different ranges um in terms of you know Strokes gained or looking at scrambling From the Rough versus
Scrambling from the Short Grass which I think will you know matter depending on the course as well yeah let me speak on that real quick because um this yeah t TPC Scottdale is known for having you know it’s got a some collection areas that kind of funnel Aon approaches and
So you know you have the 10th toughest conditions to scramble on tour here and most of that is on in these Shore grass areas and so you know even on the filter you know I have an option here if you go to the very bottom of it um where you
Can click on other courses that are difficult for scrambling on sh grass and so that’ll kind of narrow all these courses that are similar to TPC Scottsdale around the greens and it’s just a great way to research you know looking at how players have performed in
The past you know however many years you want to go back or if you want to do our rounds um just to see you know similar conditions and so that’s one of the beauties of of the rabbit hole is you know you can take each of these
Individually and just just add them to your model and you know you can obviously weigh them as much as you want to and so yeah so you would you would think on a course like this around the green not that important you know the greens are huge one of the largest on
Tour you know but you you have these these funnel areas you know where you have the Short Grass the tight lies um that you know some players struggle with and so it’s just another good thing to look at yep uh totally a good call yeah I think again you you things that you
Could put in your model uh you just give them a little bit of weight or don’t weigh them at all if you want to just have the ability to look at them to want to show folks the floor ceiling uh view as well because I think this is
Obviously uh you know one of the cooler features that we have here as well um I think there’s some upside and some utility in terms of you know placing bets here but I think it’s also a great DFS Tool uh you want to get a sense and
We hear like Spike weeks all right well what does that actually mean uh you know this guy is fantastic oh Luke list T green is just fantastic we just hope we get a spike week putting well what actually is Spike we putting how frequently does that happen so we break
Down in in terms of The Strokes gain categories here and you can get a sense of how frequently uh this is based on like you can look at the ranks but I love this percent of round gains how often does this happen so how often does someone gain more than one stroke more
Than two all the way up to five Strokes in any of The Strokes gained categories so you want to see Strokes game putting uh you want to see what Spike putting weeks actually looks like and how frequently it happens uh this is your way to do it so we’ll back out here I
Want to go a little bit of a larger sample size just to show folks and just really quick if you yeah wanted to take this a step further you know again you will not find this anywhere else if you wanted to just look at poet trivialis
And see who’s having Spike weeks on that you know there’s so many different angles you could take here um and and and you just click on that filter by conditions menu and you can select anything you want and you will still get the same ceiling floor percentages no
Matter what you choose yep no great call uh and you set the minimum round feature too you’ll see that it updates because it’s it’s reformatting and ranking based off of the minimum rounds too which is great so you know who’s gaining at least a stroke per round uh on the greens
Taylor Montgomery he’s the only one north of 50% uh who’s doing it uh you know two times you see like this is min woi this is perfect right we see spiked putting weeks uh this is actually what that looks like in terms of you know
Over a 50 round s Le gaining two or more Strokes on the green over 30% of the time uh you might find some you know bad Putters like hey we Bren to’s a good putter but how often is he gaining two or more well and one out of every four
So basically he makes a cut that’s happening at least once um you’ll see some how about four it doesn’t happen often this is a small sample uh so we’re getting uh you know the the rookie for a little bit of a a small sample so a little noisy again we could fil that
That out here to 12 rounds he’ll go away way again you know just another feature that you’re not going to be able to find uh anywhere else which I think is you know useful maxom wind Clark we saw man did we see that uh at Pebble on Saturday
What that actually looks like so again another really cool feature and tool that you can use uh just for the sake of time uh I’m G to wrap up here just gonna be an anchor stat I really think T green matters a ton this week just to show
Folks what it looks like to actually uh build a model uh hey look Scotty’s on top he’s pretty good at golf we should probably uh add that so again this is not a model that I would recommend I just want to show folks who are hanging out with us
We appreciate it um what that actually looks like you can go ahead now that we’ve added a couple things you can hit mix create mixed condition model uh actually I think I got a few other things in here so this gives you a sense of some other things that I was looking
At this week we’ll cut those out part four scoring I think matters a little bit um but right here these are the three things we added on the show again you can add weights however you want to do it if you would have made a note it’d
Be here in the description and you could see here you could save as many of these bad boys as you want uh there’s no limits you don’t have to delete them you can go in you can run some baseline stuff hey I always want to look at you
Know Baseline uh driving accuracy I want to look at you know form what does that look like you can have a rolling form model that you run just to see that you know is basically pulling in high level Strokes gain stats you can do that
Whatever you want to do uh you can go ahead and do that here too the other cool thing you see this button right here download a CSV you can download any of these little things to yourself put them in your own uh CSV and chop them up
Whatever you want to do that is a unique feature as well which I think is uh is very very useful also in this expert tab you can click this you want to see the model that I built this week you want to see what Ron did you want to see what
Our boy Andy did too uh you can go in and see actually the models that we did get a sense of the stats that we’ve added find out if there’s anything that you maybe missed on your own or anything like that that’s an option for you too
Which I think you know visibility to you know our thoughts I think could be helpful to some as well especially if you’re just starting on on some of this stuff so uh we’ll just give give this a a name this will be our Waste Management First Look
Show and let’s see what we get just to again hit save and generate nice and quick I mean we’re streaming and this bad boy is gonna pop up real quick no long lags and again you can you know mess around with this report here to from DraftKings to FanDuel scoring uh
Hey Victor hland he’s not in the tournament he would have been good uh Scotty makes a ton of sense too again a very very very high level model I just want to show folks what that looks like if you’re seeing it for the first time but uh you know a very very
Userfriendly way to build and chop up some really great data um that can you know I think goes and pairis really well with reading Ron’s preview getting a sense of what what Ron thinks matters this week uh and then going in and kind of filtering through the data and
Building a model too which I think is uh is super helpful so Ron what else you got for the folks yeah just uh same stuff coming out this week um keep uh you know looking at the kind of the key angles the key stats uh we’ll keep posting stuff in Discord
And uh yeah keep watching this odds board see if uh what changes and um when some more books get added here hopefully dive in yeah interest to see the shuffle the top you know made a joke in uh where you know Scotty’s already getting a little shorter 550s are out there Holland’s
Gonna come off the board then you have you know just really short numbers on uh you know Xander JT hom and be we’re all uh you know 20 or shorter Burns it’s kind of in that mix too so we’re kind of collapsing too and we pulled out one of
The top names I joked that like whoever you like in the Super Bowl just you know parlay Scotty and whoever you like in the Super Bowl you get Scotty out to you know 10 or 12 which is you know some real degenerate stuff that’s not betting
Advice but just you know just kind of joking like like you know just no Vic in this field gets a little bit harder uh to you know go way down the board but you find some names some value here on a Monday morning if you shop around so uh
Go ahead and do that and again take advantage of the promo Vivid picks get in the Discord see what we’re throwing out there uh see who we like this week you know Ron’s coming off of a nice triple digit winner on Windam Clark uh who was in this field and probably
Pretty interesting still as well though the number is you know chopped in half if you uh hard to swallow a 40 on wind them after you met him at a 100 the week before but hey hey here we are um so again betb golf.com check it out again
Reach out to us directly uh on Twitter if you uh cannot take advantage of the promo and you would like to we definitely want to help you out and you know make it as easy as you can get access to this Rabbit Hole uh and chop
Up the data anywhere you like it so good stuff as always R appreciate it uh head over to the site read the preview for Ron I’m Ryan we’ll see youall next time thanks everyone
