I’m Ted Norby, Director of Instruction for the National University Golf Academy. We’re going to talk a little bit more about curving shots. Last time we talked about hitting draws. Now we’re going to talk about hitting fades. Again, curving the ball is really just about being able to visualize what you want the ball to do and then feeling what it’s like for you to hit that fade or draw. Today on the fades obviously I need to get the club face a little open in relation to the path that I’m swinging the club head. So, as I’ve setup right here, straight down the line through that stick to the right is a big tree in the distance right there. I’ve got to start it left of that and get it to fade back toward the tree.

I can do it either by lining up further to the right and then turning the clubface or I can line up square to the target and just get my arms to clear left. Depending on how far you want that ball to curve I can open the club face in my hands or I can just put the ball forward in the stance a little bit and just get my arms to clear left, holding the clubface open.

Everybody’s going to feel this a little bit differently. But the big thing, again, is to visualize that the ball’s going to start a little left, through this gate to the left and then curve back. If the ball goes left and then goes left that means the club face is closed, I got to keep the clubface open a little bit more. Let the ball tell you what the path of your club and the club face are doing.

So for me, hitting a soft little draw, I just play the ball forward a little bit farther in my stance, and then, as I’m going through I just try to get my arms to go left and hold the clubface open a little bit more. For a bigger slice around a tree if I’ve hit it in the right side, and I’ve got to get it to work around a tree, I’m going to aim right, I’m going to play the ball back in the stance and I’m going to open the club face. Now I’m going to cut across a little bit more. Again, it’s all about path versus clubface. You can do it with your grip, you can do it with your arms. Everybody’s going to feel it a little bit differently.

Today I’ll hit kind of a medium shot, I’ll play it a little bit forward, aim a little left, turn the club face open a little bit. Aim a little left, play it a little more forward, take a look at my target, and right now I’m visualizing that ball going from left to right then I take my swing.

Start hitting through these gates, start visualizing what you want the ball to do, it will start curving for you.
