Tiger Woods 2000 season will likely go down as the most dominant in golf history. That golf swing produced incredible shots all season long and when you look at it, it was actually incredibly simple.
As you can see in this video, by changing the concepts about some “fundamentals” of the golf swing my swing is more closely matching his movements. Far from identical, but we’re in the same zip code.
What’s interesting is that I’m doing the exact opposite of everything that is commonly thought of in the golf swing today to achieve this!

Have you ever taken a close look at Tiger Wood’s 2000 swing now during this era he was the most dominant player on the planet that 2000 season was probably we’ll probably go down as the greatest season in the history of golf he was first in scoring average he was three
Strokes better than the the field scoring average second and driving distance only behind John Daly his stats that year were just phenomenal and if you look at his swing it’s pretty boring it’s really really really simple when we look at it face on there’s so little happening watch I’ll move forward to one
Of the uh slower move slower Clips here hands and arms are so quiet going back shift to the right there a lateral move hands and arms still super quiet barely setting the wrists as he comes down he’s going to make a big lateral move back to
The left and this once he gets that lateral move going he immediately starts widening that angle between between the club shaft and his arms and you can see there’s no you know not trying to set the wrist more coming down he’s actually widening the shaft very early and if you
Look as he comes down to impact or near impact look at how little wrist angle he actually has this is definitely the opposite of what’s kind of thought of today is mainstream you know maintaining that angle he’s actually trying to get rid of it as early as possible and this
Creates a very very wide swing back and through and if you ever wonder you watch tiger hit little half shots and he’s you know he looks like he only swings back you know maybe on his back swing to you know halfway look at looks like he stops
Like right here and then he still hits his seven iron 180 yards or what have you you know to do that you have to have speed early in the swing and this is something that I have been uh very very deeply diving into with the the stuff
That I’ve been sharing on Goat Theory and so I want to show you how simple this golf swing really really is because if you think about it the simplest golf swing is what we’re really always after the minimal movement while still having full power and this 2000 swing really
Epitomizes that idea of having as few moving Parts as humanly possible so as I’ve been working through these Concepts I’m going to show you where I’m at and what I’m thinking with the swing now I’m hitting a six iron and I think tiger hitting an eight
Here so there obviously a little bit of difference and he’s about 3 or 4 in taller than me so take those things into account but as he goes back you can see that he sets the club he gets the club up but you know he’s not setting his
Wrists a lot you know he very very very late wrist set by comparison to a lot of players who take a more obvious early set Tiger’s always been super super wide going back which is indicative of how I believe that he’s bringing that club down at the top super wide flat left
Wrist and and the key here is that that right hand is loaded in a position to be able to accelerate the club early and this is what I’m going to be talking about uh in the next video on the arms I just wanted to kind of give you guys a a
Precursor that what’s really happening is he’s making a lateral move and beginning to what I believe throw the club from the top you’re like wait a second I cast the club already the last thing on Earth I want to do is throw the club from the top but if you think about
What’s really happening to create a wide swing and what tiger is doing as he comes down at impact and what I’m doing and what I’m feeling to get into this impact is I’m actually going to the top and I’m trying to start accelerating that club as early as possible I’m not
Trying to maintain lag I’m trying to do the opposite I’m trying to get rid of it and this is why I have been working hard on this this video because it is completely contrarian to kind of everything in golf of maintaining the angle and turning the body fast I’m
Doing the opposite here I’m actually working on not working but feeling that my lower body is slowing down because as I start throwing sooner from the top with this lateral shift the more my hips want to start rotating even faster which is very strange uh sensation but when you start working
Through all the stuff it’s going to make a lot more sense and what’s interesting is Jack Nicholas said that he felt he could never start releasing the club early enough from the top as long as he was moving left and so as my whole goat Theory study continues to go on you’re
Going to see a lot more interesting things that are going to be pretty contrarian to what uh you’ve heard about the golf swing in the past I’m still working through these ideas but I want to share it with you guys so you kind of know what’s coming next because this is
Going to be a very different perspective on the golf swing for sure

Great video! Look forward to what’s to come. Can’t help but to think this is Tiger from the end of the Butch Harmon era, like circa 2002-2003 🤔. It’s labeled as 2000 on separate YouTube video which has been out there for years – but he rotates the face slightly more open during his takeaway on other videos – like footage of him from the 2000 US Open and/or British Open. This seems to be a little more closed going back. Just the take of a hacker like myself though 😊 Keep up the great work at Rotary Swing though and look forward to what’s to come in 2024 👍
From what I see with golfers who hit it over 300 like you do, the hands have to start releasing early because your body rotation speed appears to be exceeding the speed of sound! 🙂
I very much enjoyed your passion and love of the game and these Goat reviews are very interesting. Thank
I like 2002 better. Not a huge difference. The two iron at bethpage was the best long iron in golf history
Does this mean that most of the speed doesn't come from the R hand release any more?
It was Mike Austin, the longhitter, who recommended first to throw the club from the top as early and fast as possible.
As usual Mate, very clearly detailed. Thanks!
Totally agree with releasing from the top. I took lessons from a Pro in Parker, CO. This was the first thing he told me to do. I thought he was crazy; you'd cast the club, and loose all your lag. I picked up 15 yd.s with my 8 iron on trackman. On video, I actually had more retention of lag angle then my old swing. Since lessons, I've had my 5 lowest rounds in last 5 years including my lowest round ever by 4 strokes.

Chuck, have you watched the interview Tiger and Butch did in 2000 on the golf channel? Tiger talks about this in detail. He says that he tries to pull the arms down while he feels that his hips don't move. Of course his hips to shift and rotate but this feeling of keeping everything shut coming down reminds me of your old belt buckle drill (keeping it shut coming down). Does this move contribute to tiger releasing the club early or throwing the clubhead at the ball? I've personally been working on keeping my shoulders shut coming down while shift to the left and that has drastically improved my releasing the club at the ball at the right time
Are you working on getting more side bend into impact? Tiger does something interesting with his head coming down: he lowers it as it also drifts a good amount towards his heels. Anyone else notice that?
He never should of left Harmon
Is there any way you can address how he and I see you bow that wrist so much at about hip high in the down swing? I feel and just feel if I start to throw the club from the top with no thought of that wrist starting to bow it is going to be wide open at impact. Just a thought and a feel.
Hogan is still the best ball striker of all time.
Are you going to start teaching a new swing vs the lead side or trail side swings?
