Thanks so much for the support, Iona and team xx
Hi everyone welcome back to on the road of sauna I’m here at the L’s club and this is a video about how I warm up for a round of golf how do I warm up for a round of golf and I was thinking actually these days I usually don’t
Guilty I usually rock out out the car maybe just have a couple of air swings get my tape on my wrist and then I’m off but in the name of trying to get better and score better and be more effective um I think a thorough warmup is very
Helpful even if it’s just 20 minutes to playing well out on the golf course by the time you get to the first te you feel like you’re ready to take the golf course on because it’s like it’s so important to be ready to play golf from
The off cuz otherwise if you if you let a bogey or make a double bogie on the first you’re just letting a few easy shots leak away so the way I normally looking back on my warm when I was you know when I was more professional when
I’m trying to be now the way I did it was started with a little bit of a physical stretch so just even a couple of lunges a couple of squats and then I’d make my way to hit a a few full shots and I’d always start with a wedge
In my hand hand and make my way up to the driver then I’d go and hit a couple of chips and I’d finish with a couple of pots the warm-up is a very personal thing and you can do what feels right to you I know golfer is out on the tour and
I’ve done this in the past myself that I’ve gone onto the driving range hit a few looseners so to speak and then actually hit every single shot that’s going to be asked of them out on the golf course now of course you can only do that if you know the course and what
I mean by that of course you don’t know what’s going to happen you don’t know how the br’s going to play out but you can visualize and you can hope you’re going to hit let’s say you’re going to hit 10 drivers you’re going to hit two
Hybrids off the te you’re going to hit seven seven irons so visually in your head you’re going right off the first I’m going to hit a driver and if I hit and and do what I hope I’m going to do I’m going to have a seven iron so I’m
Going to hit a seven iron then then you don’t have to worry about the chipping and the putting next T well it’s a par three I’m going to hit a seven iron bang next hole I’m going to hit my driver bang then I’m going to probably have a
Three-wood in cuz it’s a par five bang they anticipate what shots they’re going to need out in the golf course and they actually hit every single shot before they go out on the golf course I’m not going to do that today instead what I’m going to do is
I’m going to do what I normally do which is get these balls into um groups of four so I’m going to have four balls for my wedge four balls for my pitching wedge I’m then going to hit four balls with my nine iron four balls with a seven iron four balls with my
Fivewood and then I’m going to hit four balls with my driver so that is my warm up when it comes to the long game you know in the first view with a wedge cuz this is me warming up is just about Rhythm just thinking about Rhythm and
Timing I’m not forcing anything then I might start looking at different targets so now I’m actually going to start orientating my body in space and thinking about my proceptive awareness a little bit might try and hit a little low one I’m going to hit a high one
Now perfect so now I’m going to go to my pitching wedge I think pitching wedge you know depending on where you’re playing is such an important Club so I always like to hit my pitching wedge in a in a warmup very often at golf courses you’re
Warming up on a mat it’s not it’s not really replicating what you’re going to get out there so I don’t like to hit too many okay now I’m going to aim at a target for my final ball perfect so I’m moving up through the bag now I’m pulling out a
Target even if there’s not a flag you want to aim up just aim at aim at something down the left hand side there perfect now I’m moving up to my seven iron I’m trying to find a nice Rhythm before I get out there fin ball with seven iron flushed
It right so feeling a bit looser you know you see the guys out in the DP World Tour they often they’ll go to the the driving range last they’ll finish with the more Dynamic part of the warm up again it’s a very personal thing where you want to go through the bag
And sometimes they’ll get you know their alignment sticks down they’ll work work on the bulb position and their alignment it’s so important to get those things right it it can be very useful to do that I’m a little bit short of time today so I’m not I’m using this warmup
As a place to physically get ready and to find some rhythm with the fivewood my final ball I’m going to change where I’m aiming I’m going to aim over them right now hit a little draw so just finally I’m going to get the big dog out now a few waxs with a
Big dog you might be thinking about your round the head and thinking about you know what what am I’m I going to focus on out there for me right now I’m focusing on my commitment to each shot standing over the ball thinking about being the boss of the ball really
Committing to my intention doesn’t matter what the outcome is but if I know what I’m trying to do and I commit to that process that’s really what I’m focusing on these are my final three balls of the warm up so it can be really help to find something out there now that I’m
You know imagining Fairway in my mind I’m thinking I’ve got that right flag on the right hand side that flanks the right side of the Fairway my mind and there’s a bush down the left so that’s the Fairway that I’m working with I’m going to aim right down the middle of
It you know in this tea height cuz I cuz I’m working on mat here I can’t get the ball in any deeper than that I can’t get the tea down so that’s why it’s sometimes okay not to take the warm up too seriously you just so the final ball still working down that Fairway okay so worked up a bit of a sweat there got to be done and yeah I feel like my rhythm’s pretty okay I can remember what it’s like to launch a ball from there to there so now we move on to the next part of the warmup which is the
Chipping final part of the warmup before I go to the puttting green is to hit a few chips so the next part of the warmup after I’ve hit a few on the driving range is coming to the chip in green couple of balls I’m going to throw them
Around I’m going to try and not hit the same chip twice just give myself couple of different lies this one here on a bit of a down slope you know sometimes the chipping green so far away from the first te or the practice facility practice range
That you don’t have time to do a chipping warm up but if if it’s there it’s nice just to hit a couple of chips even just to feel you know the wedge getting on the back of the ball doesn’t really matter how effective they are but you’re
Just trying to give yourself a bit of confidence so that when you go out there it’s not your first chip of the day what’s that me what is it just try it I all your B okay all right this is a rogue part of the warmup this is a saucepan I’m going to
Say there’s like I’m going to say there’s 78° of Loft on this maybe more it’s unbelievable a no this isn’t a 64° that’s pretty cool you can show off to all your pals thanks mate so we’re in a bit of a rush now cuz I haven’t got all that time
So I’ve just hit four chip shots there and that’s better than nothing it’s just like throwing the balls down getting the confidence that I know when I go out in the golf course the first chip I have isn’t going to be my first chip of the
Day and gives me makes me feel relaxed and that’s what you want want I feel relaxed walk into the first tea I’ve come down to the puttting green here at the ‘s club and I’ve noticed that somebody’s been working with chalk line I’ve just spotted it cuz normally what I
Do is I just drop a few balls I work on my past putting predominantly and then before I go out I might just ho a few just to here and see the ball going in the hole somebody’s obviously down here I don’t know who working hard on on the
Fundamentals and they use this chalk line which you use a bit of string cover it in chalk and then you pull it when you find a straight putt that is the most important thing the pot has to be straight and the idea is you’re going to putt the ball kind of
Along the chalk line and in theory it should drop in so it’s a really good way you can get your feet your hips your shoulders everything set up to this line it’s just kind of drilling that rhythmical straight part it’s kind of reassuring to see a line going all the
Way to the hole and you’re trying to feel like you’re like you’re potting along that line anyway it’s quite well used this line so I’m going to move on to something else but you should check out online look for chalk line when it comes to potting quite often in golf courses
You’ll find the Putt and green is next or near to nearer to the first te than the driving range so it makes sense that a lot of people finish their warmup for a round of golf on the Putt and green what I normally do is I get three balls
And I drop them on the green just so I can make the most of the time I have here maybe it’s going to be 5 minutes maybe it’s going to be 10 minutes if I was playing in a tournament I’d probably at least try and have 15 minutes on the
PT and green but the first thing I do is try and get an idea of the pace I’m just going to eyeball three different holes and I’m not worrying about the lines so much but I’m just focusing on the pace so that was pretty good but I’m never
Working to the same hole twice so now I’m going to go over here to this one so I’m resetting again cuz as soon as you’re right there on the golf course you don’t get another go so you’ve got to try and understand the pace straight away with your first ball these greens
Are a we bit slower than the last couple of greens I’ve played on so that’s okay for Pace as well we bit fast maybe and then I’m going to test myself cuz there’s some big greens out there I’m going to go a wee bit further down There easy easy easy who it’s going to be a bit fast as well I’m going to do that probably three or four times around the green just one ball to one hole I’m not doing multiple balls because I feel like that defeats the purpose you’ve got
To reset and let your system do what it can trust your instincts your body as you’re visually looking at a hole it’s doing doing so many sort of subconscious calculations you just got to look at the hole and let your eyeballs let your brain absorb that distance and just trust that it
Knows how far that is that’s not bad so I’ll go to this one now I’m not worrying about the line so much but that again quite good pace so once I’ve done that a few times what I’m going to do is I’m going to get these
Three balls I’m going to work on Hing out so I just want to hear and I want to see the ball dropping into the cup for those really important pots out there that are like I don’t know 4T 5T even the 3 ft you’ve got to be
Able to hold these pots I’m going to find shorter pots just before I go out and I’m just going to try and knock them in and I’m seeing and I’m hearing the ball dro into the cup so I’ve done my Pace part of my putting warm up and now
I’m I’m focusing more on this kind of shorter range partt by the time you get out there you know you’ve hold a few today so I’d maybe do six or nine of those just three sets of three and then I’d be on my way that’s the end of my warmup I’m now
Ready to go and play a beautiful and hopefully successful round of golf

Loved this one Iona , warming up is very important
Being someone that suffers badly with back trouble I have to warm up properly before a round. If I don't not only does the game disappear but I usually end up in all sorts of pain
Another great video with some excellent advice. Will give the 4 ball routine a go. Just wish I had the rhythm and flow of your swing.
Ideal thank you. I play terribly if not warmed up and in pieces for days after. 😂
Love the warming up vid similar to mine started using 5 balls always hit 4 if they are ok just tap the firth onto range, best to finish on a good shot rather then a shank 😂, also when practicing my putting before a round alway try to get it as close as i can without it going into the hole helps me when on the course 🏌️♀️⛳️
Great video with relevant stuff for everyone to take on board – it be even more relevant in a wintry St Andrews rather than warm Dubai!! 😊😂
You must have been putting some work in, you are swinging beautifully.
You are the best golf content, somewhat concerned that the idea of parking and heading straight to the tee isn’t helping 😂
My warmup is usually fast walking to 1st tee 😂
Love your content Iona (particularly when you have Deleas with you).
Just wondered whether you have tried a wrist band rather than the tape. I have had a problem with my right wrist for a couple of years and have taken to wearing a neoprene wrist band when playing golf, it has a strap I can tighten to provide the necessary amount of support
Love watching your videos Iona. Always want to get up and go and practice or play after I watch your videos. I run data driven golf analysis sessions in west London to compare golfer stats to tour averages and see where the margins are to be had. Let me know if you are ever interested.
Great insight Iona. I really like the four balls during warm up,plus finishing with those short putts. Playing Formby Ladies tmw, so will use this drill ⛳️😊
Another good informative episode . Like most warm ups isn’t always to the fore when playing a round. It should be we get 25 balls to warm up with ! I have promised myself to use this facility more this year . Following on from your pre round drills I will try to come up with a quick routine to loosen up .Love the drills though especially the chalk line one👍 Hope you played well 🏌️♀️look forward to the next episode.
Brilliant insights 😊
Great video, very informative. What tape do you use on your wrist?
You managed to squeeze all that great stuff into just over 14 minutes…
Thanks Iona. Another very informative video. 👍
Thanks for the warm up tips. Easy watch and listen. Keep them coming 🤗
Love watching your swing!! keep grooving it! great tempo!
Hi Thom here just to let you know Edinburgh golf clubs for cash has a set of Wilson’s with your elusive i80 shafts on them you might be able to utilise them.

Could listen to you all day. Great informative video as always. Keep up the great work Iona.
Who takes the videos for you by the way?
Just to add. As someone who's attention span is shocking, having time to warm up physically and get my head into 'game mode' is probably just as important for me. Not that I'm particularly good, but definitely worse of I don't have time to.warm up and get my head in it.
Great Video — hope your game is building for ST Andrews
