The 2005 Booker football team that took us to States for the first time in history. A sweet revenge this victory for it was vs the Belle Glades Central team that knocked Booker out of the playoffs in over time back in 1998 for the opportunity to play at states.

And the host team the tornadoes of Booker High you don’t need to tornado tell the tornadoes how big this matchup is they know it too well already 2003 specifically the tornadoes lost to mon Sor Pace by 10 points preventing them to moving on to their very first state
Championship now the tornadoes will go up against the Raiders and it won’t be an easy test the Raiders come in undefeated and the top team in the state in class 3A and talk about a game the people already started coming in this game as early as 5:00 and they made
Their presence known the team they made their presence known once they arrived to town five car police escort through the town Cyrus glaring and they were just making their statement known that they are here and trust me they are bringing at least from what I’ve been
Told 3 to 5,000 people out of Bel Glade you’re talking about emptying the city they are definitely emptying the city for this big matchup and it will be an interesting matchup you’re talking about two teams that will match each other’s speed skill size it could just come down
To a matter of who defenses shines the most in the end it’s definitely football weather and will see a good game I had a chance to talk to Fred Gilmore about the big matchup on Thursday we talked about his time when he played against Bel Glade we talked about just the big week

Bit about the week leading up to how crazy has it been for you preparing hectic um besides the football game you have recruiting and then you have the school so these kids have to balance it all I guess I’m learning to juggle it all and let’s get to Friday let’s play
Some football coach as you look at a situation like this you were here just two years ago same situation obviously a different opponent looking at how you finished that year which was a heck of a year and what do you take from that and transfering that into this game tomorrow
Night that’s the adult thing we hope that it’s beneficial being there um it’s a lot of different things that we were a novice in dealing with we think we’re better the media um the college recruiters the kids Focus um we think we’re better at dealing with that and
We’re not just so happy to be here we’re trying to get to the next step I know you’ve always told me you don’t like to compare that team from 2003 to this team right here but let me ask you this defensively defensively I I was breaking
Down some numbers I was looking at that defense leading up to the state semi-final game that defense average gave up seven points on average this team behind me five points is this a better defense we think so we we compare this one to our 19 998 team with Greg
Walls Marcus Waters um a lot more athletes but the defense of 2003 played together and um that’s what we’re going to have to try to do Friday night talk about glaze Central they come in here I was looking at their roster over 6 seven guys over 300 lb a couple of more uh
Closing in on 300 we know they’re going to match you at least skill-wise speed and do you see this match up sort of being like a chess match coming down to the end well uh we’ve played big teams all year longone when you play in this area rearview manate Sarasota you
Know real big kids um what we have to do is not focus on B Glade Central as much as focus on oursel and doing the things that we do to have success I was looking at their numbers to uh what they score average wise offensively and defensively
They were averaging over 36 a game you guys average 34 but the glowing number was the defensive uh numbers they they give up 23 a game you guys five hearing those numbers right there how much do you get motivated on that do you kind of
Make sure you don’t get to lacks here in numbers like that well I don’t think we look at the numbers or the kids look at numbers we look at film and they play some quality opponents IM Mar Le is defending state champions in 2A um great players javar James um John Paul great
Players sioban Walker for Riverdale maybe one of the top backs in the in the state and that makes it the country um we can’t look at what they giving up what we have we have to look how we match up with them and what our game
Plan is going to be and how to execute it looking at this game I mean the magnitude of it itself is huge one win and you go to the state championship game but as you look at this game mentioning Bel Glade you personally I know you you played against him you
Coached against him in the postseason uh what do you take from this as you prepare for this game Friday night I don’t I think the media is hyped about the past and everything else and this a whole new day whole new group and I I I

Before kickoff between the Raiders and tornadoes it should be a definitely a good matchup the Raiders have won five state championships overall have sent at least a dozen players to the NFL so it’s a program that’s definitely well established and has great players year in and year out but the thing with glaze
Central is they haven’t been to the big game since 2000 so Booker and glaze they have they are pretty much in the same boat in terms of where they want to get to winner from here moves on to the state championship December 9th Pro Player Stadium down in Miami it should

How well Booker’s Defense matches up with the Raiders offense the Raiders are scoring averaging over 36 points per game but they give up 23 you look at Booker’s offense they score 34 a game give up five so it’ll be an interesting matchup but you look at the Raiders they

Let’s let’s reflect back a couple years for you you know go back to that sophomore year uh 10 touchdowns and last year eight touchdowns this year 21 touchdowns receiving as you look back over your your career here at Booker what do you what what what do you what
Comes to mind are you satisfied what you’ve accomplished here yeah cuz you know I before this season even started I made a goal on my wall like what’s going to happen and some of them goals I’m accomplish and you know you make goals they a going to happen and what are what
Are some of those goals what’s what’s on the wall my school goals was you know end up with a 3.0 you know pass all my courses and uh I got life goals you know make my mom and dad family proud you know just stay focused don’t get a big
Head football gos make it a state you know go to a fouryear college and be successful let’s talk about what happened in 2003 you’re only one of the few remaining from that team that uh fell short right on this very feeli to to to to
Pace as you look at that game you know you guys went down 277 looking at how you lost to that game you’re back in the same position again this year what going what’s going through your mind now well you know the mistakes I had from 2003 you know I I worked on that
Mistakes you know I was only a sophomore a lot of scenes on my Pace you know they aggressive you know I was just a jit so you know I’m I’m a lot stronger now I’m more experienced I’m ready to play for Bel Glade Glade Central let’s talk about
Them a little bit they got some big boys on the line uh they got about six or seven guys over 300 lb but I know that probably doesn’t concern you too much being that you playing on the outside at the wide opposition but there is a kid
Jeremy Terry uh one of their top defensive backs he’s actually a top defensive back in the state that’ll probably be lined up against you seeing a match up like that what go through your mind you talking about you’re one of the best in the state versus one of
The best defenders in the state how do you see that match up well you know when I come up to that line every time I say to myself I’m going to score on you I’m going to do you in my head I don’t tell them that you know I just do play assic
Football do my routes how many yards it supposed to be if I poos to still might come back in I’m going do that you know just stay focused out there I can’t get the big ha and thank him for the just you know go out there and kill him every
Time I just got to play assignment football I got to do a lot of blocking it just got to be teamwork out there it got to be a lot of leadership too looking at uh over the past couple of postseason games you guys played this year um specifically just think about

Zner and Baracka Atkins former Booker tornadoes and guys what’s it like to be home uh it feels great to be home and watching um our old high school player in the state semifinal it bring back memories from when y’all were here oh definitely I mean doesn’t
Feel like I’ve been going this long but it definitely get back here to see this purple and gold out here and play football I hear you now I I see you both out here trying to coach the players giving them some advice what kind of advice are you giving these guys out
Here tonight uh just to relax and to play their football I mean they know what to do they’ve been playing they’ve been practicing all year long so just to relax and play their football now with this kind of lead at halftime how do you keep the guys up and going I know you
Guys are going to be major player out here on the sidelines to keep these guys going how you going to help them out I mean as always you try to tell the team now once you have somebody down keep them down defense don’t don’t let up anything and our offense just continue
To try to put points on the board all right guys thanks for talking with me today and have a good night antoan back to you baraca Atkins and Chris zelner two uh very good defensive players there for the Tornado zeler part of that 2003 team
They lost on this very same field in the state semi-final game uh now these guys Shine for the Hurricanes uh great players there but uh we got the band right now playing of the the Raiders B down on the field but we got some halftime stats want to go over here Fern
Uh we were discussing during the break not a lot of Big Time numbers uh because everything was so defensive in this matchup right I mean if you look at these stats and you see you know Jones three carries well 73 yards but hunter four carries 44 yards Williams one car
Har noage without looking at the scoreboard you might think that Booker is getting hammered in this but you’re absolutely correct uh defensively they they’ve really upheld their end of the deal returning two for touchdowns Sam Shields returning a a fumble on one of the first plays of the game and the
Stoner field goal but if you’re the Raiders you have to think okay the worst is behind us there’s no way we could have played any worse in that first quarter if they’re only down 17 to six a couple of scores they’re right back in this you know you you often hear about
Teams having to go on the road a long bus ride their legs on that’s what look like at first like they just weren’t acclimated to this environment yeah you’re exactly right B I guess we are also seeing too uh that tornado defense stand up to the test that we’ve always
Seen throughout the postseason they’ve only given up five yards I mean five points per contest and on right now they they only they’ve only given up six so the defense is still holding strong you got to talk about uh with 33 Chris Young for the tornadoes what a first quarter
Not a first half a first quarter that kid is having a fumble the a couple sacks I mean this kid is all over the field now what Booker what Booker needs is to come out in the second half and pretty much repeat that kind of performance because I expect the Raiders
To come on out and be upset with the way they perform this is a very proud franchise with a very proud tradition of state championship I expect they come out the Jitters are gone the emotion is gone if anything a little banged up now by half a football we’ll see I think
This second half be more about football and execution than about uh uh big plays and sort of being being scared of the of the moment I think that’s what the Raiders have you look at Ashton Samuels for the Raiders he’s been their only big guy in terms of yardage there 12 carries
89 yards uh but no one else is really shy for them and it’s just again a true Testament of how well the uh tornado’s offense and defense is playing and I’m looking at this band out here right now the raid uh looks like the uh it reminds me of

Threw five touchdowns against some Moy but he’s been definitely under pressure and their best offense has been handing the ball off to ashon Samuels against the defense that I think expected them to go deep down 17 to nothing and they’re definitely playing yards off the line of scrimmage smart coaching by sne
He saw what Booker was giving him and he took advantage of with the running game and and you look at this game too and just just look at the the the state semi-finals there’s so many different you know uh poll you know column writers who say well this part of the state has
The better football this area you know the state has better football I guess I mean the real test is only you know proven once you line up on the field and right now although we’re only a half through the torn tadoes are living up to what they’ve done throughout the
Postseason well you know State semi-finals are great because chances are you get a team that has not face another team I mean you can exchange films and get sort of a a reading that way but that’s what’s great I know Miami Fort Lauderdale Palm Beach they’re very well known for their football Talent
This team has produced 22 players in the in the pros uh Fred tayor they have five guys in the pros right now Fred Taylor being the most well-known they’re known for their speed athleticism but it’s great once you get a great team from this part of the state and a great team
From that part of the state you get them together and it really tells who the better team is and right now thanks to turnovers definitely it’s Booker in this first half I think we’re going to watch a little of the Raiders out here on the

Booker tornado ban is uh currently on the field uh Doug I got to say uh the crowd is uh what as it was expected to be a packed crowd standing room only but is a very silent glaz Central side well really the only time they’ve had a
Chance to rout was when they scored their their only touchdown late in the second half you know this kind of reminds me on a smaller scale of last year’s Riverview Sarasota game where they may have drawn 101 12,000 and the fans weren’t just surrounding the field
They were four five and six deep they Booker had to bring out a couple of bleaches uh they they look like they could fit in the back of my car they’re not really big bleaches and it looks like nobody is really using them right
Now so they want to put them back in the trunk and bring them back wherever they got him but the tornado ban is on the field right now while we got a chance we maybe we should pass on the uh the halftime of the manate score manate
Scored a touchdown they Trail 24 to4 to St Thomas aquinus at the half so they within a couple ofor lot of game left there a lot of game left and uh St Thomas aquinus a representative of Fort Lauderdale they’ve won their Sher of state championships their coach has been
There 30 years so really some great football in this area tonight yeah definitely a good match up going on up up there as well George Smith St Thomas coach three championships you got coach can and four Championship so it’s a battle of two legendary coaches over
There but we also got our own uh great game going on right here in Tornado Alley with the tornadoes and the uh Raiders well like I said we are at halftime right now 176 uh we got about four and some change left before the third quarter gets underway uh talking about the second
Half F uh you you look at it we were just talking Sam Shields is a guy that uh I think needs to to make some big plays in the second half here you know his cousin Duron Hunter they’ve hooked up uh 21 times so far on touchdowns uh
You see that he’s beating the Defenders uh clearly three four yards without a doubt but it’s just the the connection the timing is not there between the two which is kind of surprising because they’ve had you know nine regular season games and three postseason games to get
This timing down and it looks like this is a spring game in terms of their timing and it’s too bad for Booker because early on they were playing him straight man up and if they had able to hit a couple of touchdowns then that may have force a double team a little bit
Early as it is right now they’re double teaming them now over the top with the safety so it’s going to be a lot tougher to complete those timing routes uh early in the early in the game was the time to really hit this team for a couple of
Scores yeah you’re exactly right and I’m sure coach Gore is uh reiterated to this team in the halftime you have to match the same intensity that you had in that first half more more so what you had in the first quarter cuz those were fireworks of gor we saw in that first
Quarter uh Grant uh I’m sure none of us thought that we would see that type of a turnover performance from Glade Central there but uh it’s definitely boun the ball is bounc in the tornado’s Direction well if you talk about momentum ending the half you know the Raiders scored
That late touchdown the booker drove and Booker had a chance to put some points on the board either via a a field goal or an attempted pass Hunter didn’t throw the ball in the end zone his coaches got on him so going into the locker room if anything maybe the Raiders have this

Sustained Drive they don’t even have to get points but they can’t get like three and out and give the ball back to them right away that that was reinforce the momentum we were talking about earlier about the second half momentum and uh we have the officials meeting at the uh

Clock moving and uh as far as I know offensive lineman would much rather run block than pass block pass blocking you’re just getting back in your stance you’re not really initiating contact as you do when you run block and also what it’s also what it’s doing it’s wearing

They don’t let continue to the Raiders that could definitely take a lot of life out of this Raider team right now big play and one they’re going and Booker has four linan down Joel and J Jones down on the defensive end Alfredo Hudson down at nose tackle quarterback keeper he’s got it easily
Quarterback Keeper look like off off right tackle right gu area I mean that’s the safe play to run right there in this situation don’t even take the risk of handing off to a running back he get caught in the back field go forward with it you’re only inches away fresh set of
Downs now for the Raiders uh just under 5 minutes left in this third quarter ball now on the 44 yd line man now under center it’s uh rare that we see him under center now hand off to Samuels again gain of about six you know they’re very methodical
Obviously they think that we got time to come back we’re not down by that much let’s just do the safe safe thing right now and it’s starting to turn out to a battle of the ground game right here it is well the Raiders can beat you in the air
And on the ground they’re opting to keep the ball on the ground during this series again looks like he’s picked up another first down that’s another first down right there someone’s got to plug those holes down there you know it seems like it seems like their offensive line is
Getting that little bit of push they’re kind of standing up Booker the defensive line and they’re picking up those three four five yd carries and I’m seeing uh Jon Jones out there trying to fire up that defensive front to get some pressure off off the line there cuz they
Right now they’re actually getting knocked off the football they are this the kind of running the kind of physical play that really wears out a defense under Center this time oh a reverse Deontay Thompson and he is boy that was sniffed out by yeah that’s that was an easy sniff there gang tackling

Coach B called a really good game. Excellent complimentary football after some good luck, fumble that became a quasi TD pass/roll to Sam, and some big plays on D led to the 17-0 lead. The offense slowed it down, got heavy, lot of double TE's using Sam's "pull", defense can't/shouldn't play Cover 0 and honestly needs to put a safety over top, to get numbers in run game, but stayed aggressive by taking shot plays to Sam when they were available. Unfortunately they really didn't work out but it kept the defense honest and QB did hit the TE for a decent gain in 2nd half. They ground out 1st downs, milked the play clock, made sure the defense was able to rest, and limited the amount of defense the defense had to play against an O with multiple elite athletes on the perimeter who could make huge plays anytime like the deep ball to #6 and Kickoff Return to #6. Even the, I believe, two turnovers they committed weren't disastrous in that neither gave Glades very good field position.
Anyone have access to a box score on this game? I'd love to see 1st downs, TOP, rushing attempts vs passing attempts…..stuff like that.
