In today’s lesson I’m going to show you one of the most important angles in the golf swing… your pelvic tilt. We’ll look at great swings like Lee Trevino and Ben Hogan and see how they created the pelvic tilt angle that allows them to rotate powerfully through the ball.
Many amateurs get this wrong… and whether it’s a lack of rotation, early extension, or just a bad pivot, fixing this one thing can make a HUGE difference in your swing.

Hi I’m Zach, thank you for visiting my channel. My goal here is to help you play the best golf of your life while having as much fun as possible!
I’m a PGA-certified golf instructor and have been coaching since 1997. I’ve been named a Golf Digest “Best Young Teacher,” a GolfTips Magazine “Top 25 Golf Instructor,” and Southern California PGA’s Teacher of the Year. I’ve worked with golfers of all ages and levels, from 4-year-old beginners on up through touring professionals. My students have included nationally-ranked juniors, touring pros, celebrities, and CEOs, but wherever you’re at on your golfing journey, my goal is always the same… to help YOU play your best golf!
I started playing competitive golf at a young age, ultimately reaching #3 in the California junior golf rankings – just behind another promising young golfer named Tiger Woods. I also played collegiate golf at the University of Southern California and professional golf on the Omega Asian Tour.
I work with students in-person at my studio in Valencia, CA, and teach golfers all around the world through my YouTube channel and on my website: ballstrikingblueprint.com. Thanks for stopping by and drop me a comment if you have any questions or would like to get in touch!
So one of the biggest differentiators between amateurs and professionals is just one simple angle and I’m about to share that with you okay if we can change this one angle at or near impact slightly through that impact interval it really transforms your ball striking okay so it’s going to sound odd you’ve
Probably heard a little bit about parts that go along with this but I don’t think you’ve actually heard and seen this is actually the determinant on what makes all these other great things happen you know for instance um being able to stay down through the golfball right being able to maintain my
Spine angle as I turn through the golf ball even part of it is how much I’m able to turn through the golf ball right you guys can see this alignment stick through my belt here right this is kind of my pelvic angle right so as I get to
My say my top of back swing right I mean obviously at a dress I bend over a little a little bit this way you notice at my top of back swing I’ve got some left pelvic tilt Trail sides higher lead sides lower transition it goes back to
Level now here’s the key thing okay if we can get your pelvis to tilt through the ball correctly right it’s turning and tilting at the same time but I found the most benefit with my students is to actually focus on the tilting part right that gets it to
Turn we really are seeing some dramatic differences in how the club and arms come through the golf ball what’s typical is we see a lot of this coming down so you notice how level my belt is to the ground right through a lot of different reasons whether it’s some
Early extension some over the top some casting we see the pelvis really kind of working in this fashion which really it’s a false hip turn right to really get into my lead side you notice what I’m doing here with my my left side here right how it’s pushing around and back
And then you notice how low my right hip to the ground is that’s really where we want to be and to be honest with you it’s a slight yoga move as we’re coming through there thankfully we’re only there for a millisecond as we go to hit the golf ball right I’ve never seen
Anybody overdo it you know there’s possibly been some tour Pros maybe Jason day when he had some back issues he might have had a little too much of it but he did get to number one in the world with that golf swing um so you could but I I definitely have never seen
An amateur overdoing having too much of this pelvic tilt coming through the golf ball this is where you get to just some of those great positions of Lee trino Ben Hogan coming through you really see this deep angled pelvic tilt here I’m losing more and more and more
Of it and I’m starting to raise my spine angle up raise my trail shoulder up now the path of the club is going to look very different so the path of the club could be going this way the path of the club also could be going this way right
Too much of a rightward swing Direction too much of a leftward swing Direction but really A lot of it is going on this pelvis is not cooperating and train correctly and how to come through the golf ball so what I like have to have students do is just to slowly feel that at
First I feel a large stretch in my left glute my left hamstring and I feel definitely a lot of pressure Into My Lead Foot Right it feels like you’re stretching your back like this it feels good and challenging all at the same time but just know that that’s really
The feeling of greatness I feel like my arms have so much room through the ball here and I can see nothing but the club striking the back of that golf ball and then what I also love about this my feet are very very planted and grounded I see
So many golfers when they’re hitting the golf ball they’re so up on their tippy toes it looks like you could just push them over and they would fall right down that’s not a great thing for when we’ve got the club moving that fast through the golf ball okay so it’s good to just
Slowly get in there feel that pelvic tilt right you notice my trail arm moves into my rib cage as I go to do that just automatically right and then as I go to just hit some small shots here at first I’m just kind of trying to experience
That feeling and program that in my mind’s eye that really is going to be just the spot that I want to be hitting as many golf shots from as possible right um challenging but definitely the feeling of greatness so feel it there I feel that stretch I feel my left glute
Pushing back notice how far back that is behind me pelvis is tilted it’s not up too high and then go ahead and just chip one out there but that definitely I get a great sensation of my chest being so low and down and through for a long time one of
The biggest things that you always hear and see in golf is I’m coming up I’m coming out of it I lifted my head up and there is truth to that just because there’s so many things that are going on with this pelvis that starts to go up
Through my spine and into my head and it really can just disrupt potentially what might have been a good golf shot so if we can really train the pelvis to work correctly right I see so many players that do it great in their back swing they transition it and then it starts to
Fall apart okay sometimes I see some issues of this even occurring in the back swing that’s probably like say 20 handicap and above right most times people have it great in the back swing because they’ve worked on it they’ve looked at it but I want you to really
Focus on this position here and really study that one that’s where we want to have that same pelvic tilt this back swing here would be the same as this downswing so I’ll see these players they make a great back swing and then it really kind of goes like this coming
Down and they’re thinking well your heel is supposed to come up it’s like yeah it does but it happens post impact we’re like this and then it kind of gets peeled up and off the ground into our follow through so we’d like it to maybe come up a little bit later right once
You’ve done a few rehearsals feeling impact pushing it through you can even take some where you just touch the ball at impact push it through with that pelvis tilted really feel that stretch and then just hit some regular golf shots and I guarantee you’re going to get some good
Sensations hey hey it’s your coach Zach Allen here and when it comes to the golf swing I’ve seen and tried it all but nothing has proven as effective as the concept I’m about to share with you now it is the single most powerful piece of golfing advice I’ve ever come across in
Fact I would go so far as to call it a magic move since I don’t have the time in this short video I’ve put together a three-part web class where I teach you exactly how to put it to use in your game nothing held back I call it my
Magic move training series and you can get the entire thing free of charge by clicking the link in the description below you won’t find these videos anywhere else so go ahead click the link right now and I’ll send you the first session right away okay let’s go ahead
And get back to that lesson so you know that’s kind of the anchoring point that we want to have in the downswing anchoring as far as that really kind of presets some of my impact conditions most people always think about Trail side Bend as they come down not that’s
That’s not a bad thing but what really opens up the door for you to have a lot of Trail side or for me right side Bend is to have that pelvic tilt players that are like this and then they’re trying to get the club to come in you can see how
It’s just not going to happen very naturally so if we can get this to cooperate and be backing down now I’ve got all the room in the world to have that trail side Bend to keep my right elbow in and to really have some room to
Extend my arms through the golf shot so take a look I’ve definitely seen some dramatic changes just from starting at impact like we did on some of you know some of those drills there and it starts to change what happens earlier in the downswing right it even starts to change
What happens in transition because you’re going to start to know where you’re headed right we’re headed to a different impact position a much lower a much more tilted a much more down and through and extended okay that’s really just stuff that we want to have going
All the time so let me know you know um there’s a lot of great players that you’ll see some of those characteristics in if you have any questions or any concerns about kind of some of the things that you’re doing let me know down in the comments right if this video
Helps you out definitely let me know that also I think it will um if you have some other concerns about staying down through the shot I’ve got another video here that’s going to deal with some of those very same issues so check that one out too um but go out there and practice
Something that’s fairly simple like this it can’t hurt at all it’s one of those tips that it’ll only help you get better till next time have a great one we’ll see you around

Feeling of greatness!
I feel like this lesson was geared to me. Thank you!
Great drill. I found that using this hip move resulted in almost constant shanking of the golf ball. Wondering if that is a concern and how to address that. Thanks for the guidance.
Hi Zach, thanks for upload. For the average hack what is your opinion of former tour winner Larry Rinker teaching most players should actually 'stand up' thru impact, golf can be so confusing.
At last . Of all the lessons I have had over the years no one has explained this move in such detail . All I have had is “ stay down through the shot” Now I have something to work on . Many thanks
Zach, please do a video for a bigger and older golfer. Thanks!
The angle of the alignment stick in your belt and the shaft of the club are parallel and on the same plane at impact when seen from behind. This is so helpful to see the two angles align when done correctly.
