So one of the things that made me a good golf for was understanding how to control the club face and every golfer is trying to fundamentally do the same thing you’re trying to square the club face in a controlled way and the way you’re going to do this is by
Incorporating good body movement so what I mean first of all the bottom part of the golf swing is when the club shaft is parallel to parallel on the way through and what we need to do is we need to allow that club face to close so so it
Points towards the target but we need to do it should we say in a kind of non violent exaggerated way so what I mean by this is we tend to see you know lots of amate golfers will kind of do things where it looks like there’s loads
Of movement whilst the pros tend to do it in a way where it looks almost like the club face is just very passive so question is how does that happen there’s two aspects to this the first one is rotation so if I was going to face you
Guys what I want to do here is I’m going to draw a couple of lines I’m going to grab myself a golf ball I’m going to draw a line through the back of my hips here and this is going to act as what’s known as our hip de depth and the other
Line that I’m going to draw is through the heel of the club up through my elbow plane that’s known as our swing plane so I could theoretically get that club face controlled sorry I can get that club face Square by standing up and rolling
My hands like so so I have a sort of post impact position which look like this but again the likelihood of me hitting Two Shots the same with that type of technique is extremely slim what we tend to see with professional golfers is very different the first thing that
We tend to see is that they continue to rotate through the ball so the pelvis and the sort of stomach region carries on rotating through and this means that that club can keep moving through without necessarily having to use excessive hands okay so if I turn that
Means that club can move through now the second thing here which is really important is what’s known as hip depth because theoretically I know a lot of golfers Who start to turn but they turn this way and then equally you’ve still got a problem because how are you going
To get that club on plane without compensating so there’s two things you’re trying to do you’re trying to turn your lower body towards your target which is you guys whilst maintaining good hip depth which produces what is known as a tilt of the pelvis creating a tilt of the pelvis effectively is giving
You space to almost give you that feeling that you’re trying to move further away from the ball so then that club can pass through without as much manipulation on the club face and the best way to practice that and what I do with a lot of my students is just be
Very mindful of your weight pressure so try and get the feeling in this impact area that you’re trying to get your weight in towards your lead heel and your Trail toe so if I kind of move correctly which is this way okay almost feels like I’m getting further away from
The ball as you can see here my weight moves very much towards my lead H and Lead toe if you’re somebody who kind of moves this way then that’s what I’m saying you need to practice these sort of motions but if you want to be really consistent in golf you have to
Understand rotation and practice your hip depth because if you do that that club face will start to be a little bit more repeatable every time you play see you soon

“Pros”, not “pro’s.” It’s basic English.
Great video Russell. Thank you for sharing. I think this will help me cover the ball but also feel like I have room to swing the club. I do have a question for you though – this move feels like it would encourage a more out to in swing path. Is it possible to start balls out to the right and bring then back to the target with this feel?
I had a play around with centre of club face strikes today. I worked my wrists first to see how much they could effect what I was doing. Like you said very difficult to get this on a repeat basis. Moved to a strong grip I started to work on ball flight with stronger and weaker grips. Once I was happy I worked with adjustments to my set up and hips at address. What I found out was the following worked 9 times out of 10. Closed stance, hip bump 2 inches towards target, very strong grip, square face to target and an in to out swing keeping it nice and short whilst under control. This produced centre hits with a lovely little draw. What I found out today was invaluable feedback on making small adjustments. I wonder why it only took 35 years to work it out. Surely golf needs to be more understanding of trial and error to see what fits the individual. Great video Russell that reaffirmed my thinking.
