The stars aligned for the 2003 Midlothian High School Girls’ Golf Team led by Head Coach Stephanie Upshaw, as they seized their destiny and rocketed to triumph securing the District 15-4A Championship with an awe-inspiring margin of one-hundred and one strokes.
There was some pesky weather to deal with, but the Midlothian girls golf team managed to make quick work of the District 15-4A girls golf tournament field to take first-place honors. The Lady Panthers combined to shoot a two-day total of 730 at the tournament held at Ennis Country Club. Laura Cross led the way, winning her fourth consecutive district championship, shooting 147.
The Lady Panthers’ prowess was further on display at the UIL 4A Region II tournament at the Gainesville Municipal Course, where they clinched second place behind Highland Park.
The Lady Panthers shot 370 the first day, just like they had done in District. On the second day, they played extremely well in rainy conditions to shoot 345 and take second. Laura Cross, once again, led the charge, taking home the Region II Individual gold medal.
The Lady Panthers’ legacy was not yet complete, as they went on to etch their names in the scrolls of history by becoming the first girls golf team in Midlothian High School to qualify for the UIL Golf State Championships.
As the history making team tenaciously competed at the highest level of athletics during their very first State Championship, they also selflessly rallied around teammate Laura Cross and spurred her on as she completed her individual collection of state medals, ultimately seizing the ever elusive individual state championship. The Lady Panthers Golf team continues to symbolize the highest example of what athleticism, team play and the unwavering support of each individual team member should look like….family.
The Lady Panthers golf team went on to engrave their names in the pantheon of Midlothian ISD athletics by becoming the first girls golf team to compete at the Roy Kizer Municipal Golf Course in Austin. That feat will continue to inspire awe for generations to come.
