Officially nine weeks in to the boys high school hockey season we got a a sick coach well feeling better but a sick coach Reed Larson so we’re a day late here folks but uh we’re getting her in a day late and fortunately we’re not a dollar short

I just got to get through the dog day is just like everybody else it’s below zero outside it’s hockey season uh and the fact that it’s hockey season actually gets us through these terribly cold win God it’s been it’s been rough uh any on this going through the boys or I think

Start out with the big doua matchup last weekend kind of the northern Powers Grand Rapids Morhead spuds here at Yanmar um game I enjoyed and we even got to see the zigris or the Michigan yeah you know what it’s kind of getting to the point where like you

Almost feel like he it’s for the people that want to enjoy the Flash and flare of the game I guess and as a coach and maybe as a player and I was kind of not a skill guy I was more of a power forward Go Bump grind and shoot

The puck bang it in the net and keep whacking at it until it goes in so I’m not the kind of guy that could have pulled that off so I’m going to be the kind of guy that says they should Outlaw that move it’s starting to get to that

Point for me because now everybody’s going to try to do it uh I don’t know maybe it’s just irritating because it happened against mine well happened fast like I said I was on the extended goal line and I looked away for a second was in the

Net well they should at least it should at least be illegal as long as high sticking rules are enforced right well that’s so if if you got it up on your stick lacrosse wise and if your stick with the puck comes up over your shoulder the over the crossbar

Crossbar then it should be high sticking right whistle right away no goal as long as it’s wrapped around the net this way and in and below a crossbar then I don’t think there should be problems at the moment however I still have my opinions about whether they should Outlaw it or

Not so maybe that’s be Larson you could never do that move because you’re right I couldn’t I was never skilled enough to do that so I could do it if I sat there with 10 I could do it with five of them as long as I had as much wax on my stick

As I could possibly get on it and I can well and like you said the interesting thing it happened so fast so if you didn’t see it you didn’t see it because you know I went back and looked and on the video like you said it’s on the far

Saturday afternoon with the spuds in the building uh thunderhawks actually played contrary to what the score said it was a 4-2 loss Morehead came in and and beat the thunderhawks 4-2 uh contrary to what the score said it was actually a a fairly wellplayed game uh by Grand

Rapids the problem was in special teams you you you get into a situation where you’ve got you know you give the other team six power plays and they go two for six on the power play that isn’t the greatest penalty killing percentage so you know when you get a special team’s

Battle like that you have to come out on the better into that battle and and you know just looking at some of the statistics from that that particular game like I said the power plays were they were two for six on the power play Grand Rapids was all for four on the

Power play and not only were they two for six the power play but they scored a short-handed goal so that’s going to be the issue you know at the end of the day when you think about it two Power Play Goals there’s two of their four shorty

There’s three of their four well and I yeah and that was that’s I was going to say the difference was I mean power their power play is good I mean they move the puck well um craft and that one defenseman they like to rotate you know

He starts out on the umbrella then they rotate and then as you know and then he likes to just move down and he was shooting from everywhere yeah they they’ve got a nice power play and they’re a well- coached team you know it’s been for years it’s not only

Just the coaching of John ammerman who is currently the head coach but it also goes back to years and years of them being coached by Matt Cullen yeah Terry Cullen well Terry’s the dad yeah right Matt Matt is oh Matt koshman youth Matt Kosh and youth ter Terry is the is the

Grandpa that’s Matt Cullen’s dad right right yeah yeah but he was the head wasn’t he the head he was the head and more head but I’m talking about this group this group as they’re coming through this group of kids played their peees as Matt Cullen is the coach and um

Bam banham’s Matt Cullen was their coach last year and the year before and and now coming through Matt Cullen gets to be the dad and finally watch his his kids play and you know get all the stuff that they’re learning from from him and just input more from John ammerman so

You know like I said decently played game but the result didn’t end up the way that anybody wants it so nobody nobody’s going to take a moral Victory when it comes to the thunderhawks and the spuds uh but like you mentioned a well a well what’s the word we use it’s

A big outstate game yeah in Minnesota that people look forward to seeing that was actually a replay of a state championship game a few years ago 2017 so well and that was you know one thing I noticed and I don’t know if I brought

It up last week but I was with Bill robc hi been guy he had a son on wetta and we stood there for first two minutes of your game against wetta last weekend and he says gosh the hitting said the hittings non-existent in the cities and so we had a little conversation about

That I was una aware of that and that Morad Rapids game it was boom boom boom boom every time someone was along the W and had the puck it was hit hit hit both teams you know both teams it was and uh so I thought I’d bring that up that it

Was you have to play that way if if you’re not I mean if you’re talking about we Zetta you’re talking about motanka who are one and two in the state you’re talking about two teams that each have 12 13 plus kids on each of their teams that are going to play division

One hockey uh you know the two teams that we’re talking about Grand rapis and Morehead were we’re not going to have that many division players coming I’m not going to say I’m not going to have any there might be a few uh but there’s

A lot of guys and a lot more Talent on those teams that you’re talking about what why teams from the outstate can compete with some of these other teams that have all this D1 Talent is because of Pride and grit and physical play that’s the way they can compete and that

Kind of brings me into know part part of the next conversation that we want to go into here because I I wanted a playoff of you know that game of of last week to the next one uh Rapids ended up Tuesday night going into clo Esco Carlton at the Northwoods Credit Union

Arena in clo and uh they had a a tough C team that was that was coming to play that night there in their Barn uh they played with a lot of Pride and and if I were the coaching staff of clo I would have said to my players and my staff

Wait a minute look at the stats and all of the information from Grand Rapid game on Saturday look at all of the Special Teams and look at the results of those special teams if we want to compete with Grand Rapids knowingly Grand Rapids probably has more depth than us as CL y um

Usually those teams like that are gonna have you know the right amount of skill guys but the depth is where it usually differs um if if we can go after a team that has more depth than us the way to go after them is to try and keep their

Top players out on the ice all night long and you do that by putting them either in the penalty box or putting on the power play because now you’re playing the same 10 guys all night long right or 12 guys all night long sure you

Know so if if I were CL that would have been my strategy going into that game I would have been thinking well if we want to compete with Grand Rapids he probably got more depth than us so let’s get the special teams game going it didn’t work out very well for them against

Morehead so that’s exactly what clar Calton did uh Jay Walters and staff said we need to play these guys tough we need to finish every single check it was really similar bodies bodies bodies all night long see if you can get them in the Penalty Box if you can’t uh well

We’re g to try anyways and if we take penalties chances are they’re not going to score as many Power Play Goals because they were all for four on the power play against Moran uh at any rate there were some Power Play Goals that were scored in

That game uh clo struck first in that game they scored one it was just as their power play was ending their guy had just gotten out um Rapids his guy had just gotten out and trying to regroup and get things going eat the puck out of the Zone turnover happened

And Kowski scores okay to go up one to zero Rapids answer shortly after when they go on the power play B Murphy scores the tie it’s 1-1 know like rest of the game kind of goes that particular way but you know again the game is is played on the power play

Again I think there was 24 power plays called wow that was 24 penalties yeah I was goingon to ask was that was that is that group refin group known for because it was just there was no flow to that game because it was whistle after whistle after whistle after whistle

Whereas I went to The Greenway Mount West TKA game Friday night and that game ended I that game did not could not have lasted an hour and a half there was I mean there were a couple penalties there were some goals but no icings no offsides the game just like every period

Just flew by but and like I said there was a lot of flow there was no flow to that Rapids game and I I was kind of wondering if if that roughing staff has a reputation for calling a tight man I don’t I don’t really know I I don’t I

Don’t want to get into throwing darts at referees I felt like you know you call you Call what you see um in a tightnit hardnose game like that you try to stay away from the Ticky Tac stuff you know you don’t want the clutching and grabbing to H clutch and grab to happen

Um but if if I’m playing a physical game like that I’m more concerned about the things that are going to injure people that I’m going to call more often like the head contacts the roughing the check from behinds the the elbows that kind of stuff you’re you’re more diligent on

Calling um if it’s the little teeny little wax if it’s the hook this the whatever you know obviously you’re gonna call a trip because it’s obvious to everyone in the building but I I felt like maybe things were a little overcalled that’s what I but it’s to whoever’s refering the game they they

Have their opinion but it was fair I mean it was both Sid yeah they called both sides exactly the same so I guess you can say the game was called Fair it was just called a lot of penalties so then now you turn it into a special

Teams game when that happens and now you see how somebody special teams maybe improved from one game to the next and and it did for the thunderhawks they they ended up scoring uh a power play late in the game again uh but not before

Uh CL ends up going up so the score is one to one and then in the third period L gets a power play with not much time left in the in the game uh they score on the power play Carson young scores on the power play to make it two to1

Clo and playing the rest of the game thinking oh crap there’s three minutes left in the game here we’re trying to figure things out and guess what GL gets a penalty right goes on the power play ties it up on the power play power Murphy again power Murphy so the game

Goes into overtime uh luckily enough I I think yes geez I can’t even think now going back in time in my mind I’m pretty sure that the overtime winner was five on five yeah I’m pretty sure it was too yeah it happened right away either gonna happen that first minute or it’s going

To go quite a while and that was that was quick yeah Jameson Dell scored it it was a two on two it was a nice pass by G stren and cross the goal mouth there’s two defenders in between them James and dwell kind of beat him around the wide

Side and Gus fires a pass across I don’t even think he was aiming for a stick he was just aiming for something actually hit the back of Jameson dwell’s leg and went in yeah okay yeah I couldn’t tell if it was skate you know no replay on

The stream so I couldn’t tell if it was skate leg but yeah I knew he didn’t get a stick on it but there was some lucky B apparently he didn’t have to because if it hits you in the back of the leg or hits you in the rear end and goes in it

Still counts as long as he didn’t kick it in right yeah yeah so defitely at any rate that was uh it was good to see for Grand Rapids it was good to see them make the shift from not having much success on the power play on Saturday to

Having more success um on Tuesday night yeah all right well let’s move on here anym or unless you have any more to add no but you have another one to talk about you got to see one I did but let’s go into the Blandon Foundation real

We one of the games we previewed last week was the uh Hibbing hermant toown or Chism Hibbing Herman toown and uh you know kind of a battle single a I’m sure Garber loves you oh gar love you that’s why we do it our most watch Ever episode

Ever Gar so he’s got a lot of pull around here um so we kind of talked about some of hermon’s vulnerabilities but we saw said they’re getting hot you know they was it Eden Prairie last weekend I think they beat and and uh so this match ends up uh going convincingly

In Herman Town’s weight 8-1 routing down in Hermantown and I know like you said in the preseason show you said Hermantown is the top dog until somebody proves it otherwise there’s only been one team Greenway back in 19 that’s over the last decade or so um that’s knocked

Them off until that time they’re Top Dog and they proved it Tuesday night yeah there’s a couple of teams in the section that I think you know could could potentially be contenders you know at the beginning of the season I think nobody would argue that clo would be a

Contender they’re you know rated in the top 10 here or top 12 in class A at the moment and they’ve played some teams pretty tough they they’ve also Fallen to a few teams that they shouldn’t have fallen to um Hibbing is talented but they’re young it’s it’s

Maybe they’re a year away maybe they’re two years away um but that you know we did talk about Hermon having some kinks in the armor like they maybe haven’t aren’t as strong as they’ve been in the past um you know we did mention that at the beginning I remember saying that to

You that you know it’s it’s their section until someone can prove it and and they’re proving it right now that it is still their section um and they’re also proving that maybe some of those kinks in the armor that we were talking about out were were just little marks

That they could wipe off because they kind of back in a groove right now where they’re beginning to become Untouchable again here in section seven like you know they didn’t really fall off they just they were quiet at the beginning of the season and it kind of raised some

Questions like hey are they not the hermant town that they used to be just getting people to kind of shrug their shoulders a little bit and then when they started coming out after Christmas break it was like bing bing bing bing they’re they’re knocking some big teams

Off and then the ones they should beat they’re not just beating they are kicking the crap out of them yeah so like we said before it’s it’s Hermantown section I don’t see anybody beating Hermantown right now in their section and be honest with you I I think

If we’re looking far enough down the road it’s going to be Hermantown and warro in the championship game or if War doesn’t get through it’s going to be Herm East Grand Forks in the championship ah another tough one all right any more on that nope all right

Here in section 78 and Rock Ridge going at it of course gold Ender rils we’ve talked about him real hot um how do you see this one playing out I don’t know man a toss up yeah I Rock Ridge with two still two losses on the year right is it still just world

Hermantown I think there’s a few in there we’re missing I I can’t remember I thought they were something in I’ll look it up here so we can pop it up here later but what what are my thoughts here on those I think that Rials could get

Hot and there could be some problems I really do uh I’m I’m always a fan of Brock Bridge because it’s a a place where I coached a long time I was in Virginia for quite a while so I’m always a fan of the people there the kids and the families

Um and they’re having a good year and they’re having a good year and and Proctor showing a little inconsistency like we said they uh played her toown tough what two weeks ago the overtime game and then uh they go up a couple days later they go up to the falls

Bronco Arena about a week ago and they pull off the game they win 3-1 but it’s 3-1 against I Falls you know so I falls down year this year so um a little bit of inconsistency there so I think the matchup could be you know could be very

Interesting I said Rock Ridge you know pretty solid all year um I’m not sure where this game is but like I said hod goalie can make a difference in so many different ways yeah so I did look it up while we were talking here they’re 132

And one okay um and they’ve lost to warro and and Herman um yeah like I said i’ i’ I’m always a fan of Rock Ridge and a lot of people are are gonna be looking at Rock Ridge thinking okay they’re 132 and one uh they they should be talked to about and

I don’t argue that I don’t disagree that um but now is really kind of after tonight’s game including tonight’s game but even after tonight’s game is really where they should start talking about their season because now this is when they actually start playing people that uh matter when it comes to section seven

Common opponents right so s doua s doublea they they played some other section 7A teams um th this will be a big test because this is a common opponent um Proctor’s played teams tough when they’ve had riots in the Nets um Herman tone game was interesting when he was

Hot in that game and that was a really emotionally charged game so I’m hoping that because I’m hoping that it’s going to still be a wellplayed game even though it’s not going to be as emotionally charged as the Herms down game was but but I’d like to see Proctor

Give them a heck of a game see there but when things start get interesting is is the next few games Rockridge plays theth East on Saturday then they go back and they play Denfeld again okay um they they play other common opponents coming up too with with Section seven teams so really

To be honest and say this with without lying to anybody is that now is the part of their season we’re actually starting to play people that matter when it comes to the section yeah uh the first 15 games of the year was a nice season but

It’s now the real part of the season starts where the meat is yeah yeah yeah yeah so Rockridge is down at duth East 230 game on Saturday like I said common opponent and you know duth East is you with you know uh again kind of an

Inconsistent team like I said it come up have that those great two pairs against against Rapids up three nothing then Rapids comes back um ends up winning that game um of course the record isn’t showing a lot right now but um if they beat Rock Ridge but say you know Rock

Ridge beats another bunch of common opponents that the luies Lost to or beat they beat East and then e East beat some other people that’s like you said we we’ve kind of talked about this blender in 7aa well just be tough yeah get interesting it gets interesting I can

And I can talk about this stuff because the people in that coaching staff are good friends of mine and we’ll have that debate all day long at twice on Sunday about who’s who’s better than who well you know that the only thing that we can really talk about when that comes down

To the wire here with Section seven is when people meet each other in the section playoffs uh when seedings come down to it it’s it’s good going to be because uh they they don’t play everybody in the section and if we’re looking at Grand Rapids as being one of

Those teams they don’t play each other so they won’t be playing until they or if they play in playoffs and likely that will happen in a semi-final game or potentially a final so that that’s just going to work out to Rapids ended up dumping a game to forse Lake early in

The season and that that blemish doesn’t look great on gra rapids’ side of things but they’ve taken care of business with other section teams thus far uh duth East they’ve swept so in my mind Rock Ridge has to sweep Toth East they have to right if they lose to him once then there’s

Question marks right exactly but if they beat him and then East goes off they beat they say they beat say they beat East and East beats and over you know what I mean just like I said that it’s really interesting that’s what I mean well Denfeld is in the top pick too

Though Denfeld into the top Denfeld plays him again and rapid plays denfield in a couple of weeks so that becomes an important game and then Rapids plays Andover so yeah we Rapids plays and over in February so there’s a lot of games to come and if people are Forum Watchers

And and looking at you know what Carl East is starting to rank people at um there’s a lot of time I wouldn’t be looking at Forum Watchers right now and checking stuff like that to see where things are uh as much as I respect him and his opinions um there’s two many

Games be played to be ranking guys at the moment as far as seedings are concerned that’s just people’s opinions and that’s okay he does US job of doing that um but I think uh that’s why we play the games that’s why we play the game right Packers Cowboys kids we’ve

Been around a long time we’ve seen a lot of games like that to you you haven’t that’s why you play the game Packers Cowboys remember that from this weekend all right um and a big weekend for for uh thunderhawks up here at ymar hosting again Friday Saturday Tils Hill muray and Whitebear

Lake yeah those are going to be some big games this is kind of like the section four AA one and two make their trip North to to section seven AA what so White Bear Lake comes into the building here tomorrow night and and they’ve had a

Pretty good year they’ve got a a couple of really really good players as always they got the road kid that’s uh on the front end that is a stud and they got the disc dead kid on the back and number six that is an absolute stut so uh

They’ve played some teams pretty well and it’s going to be an interesting night that the yanar arena tomorrow night we’ll see how practice today gets us prepared for tomorrow night we’ll see how that goes it’s it’s going to be a fun one because again we’re g to see where things go

Here as we start getting down the wire with now it’s going to be top team top team top team top team it’s just there’s no break and no rest for the weary anymore and that’s what I like going back to what we were just talking about

That’s what I like when I start seeing schedules that come to in the Dog Days even Rock Ridge and all these other teams were talking about their schedules aren’t weak anymore right like they’re going d d just like this all the way through the rest of the year and

Everybody’s gonna be prepared oh yeah look at denfield they got you they got world this weekend it’s you know so these section seven doublea teams now have got just a absolute Gauntlet to go through here you know for the next couple of weeks we got to have respect

Community the hockey Community the gr hockey Community not just the grg but even the gr hockey Community you know itself is happy to say that she did play Grand Rapids Youth Hockey all the way up through peee doua right before she ended up jumping right into the girls program

So pretty cool to say that there was a girl that came through your program that played Peewee doublea’s oh yeah right so it tells you how good she was as she beat out of and she actually played with a bunch of the guys that are on this

Boys team right now like Kyler Miller and Forest and those played with those guys growing up so pretty cool to to see her breaking records and people knew that she was going to be special but uh this is pretty darn special to see you break on that record and more to goal
