Kim Seung-gyu, South Korea’s first-choice goalkeeper, has been ruled out for the rest of the AFC Asian Cup in Qatar with a knee injury.
According to KFA, Kim suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during a training session on Thursday in Doha.
He will not be available for the remainder of the competition, a potentially big blow to South Korea’s bid to win their first Asian Cup title since 1960.
Kim started in goal for South Korea’s 3-1 victory over Bahrain in the teams’ first Group E match on Monday.
Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann is now left with two goalkeepers, Jo Hyeon-woo and Song Bum-keun.
South Korea will next play Jordan at Al Thumama Stadium in Doha on Saturday.
Yeah I’m very very sad very very sad uh because he’s obviously he’s a a top class goalkeeper he’s our number one and did so well uh the whole year and I mean obviously in his entire career and and this is uh this is very sad for him it’s
Very sad for us the entire team but but it’s part of football it’s part of football and uh um you have to swallow it and he will swallow it he will come back strong he will obviously then get the surgery when he gets back to Korea
Um and we have to deal with it and uh in a tournament uh things will happen in a tournament we will have injuries uh and and we have to always find Solutions then how to fix things and and and move on and uh uh but uh obviously we we feel
We feel for sununu um and uh and and wish him that he gets better right way
