A few questions about where the boys have been so back from the holidays ready to start the new year I think we had a good golf week to get us back in the swing of things got my bucket hat on with the the Rainy Houston weather so
We’re uh we’re ready to go man we sure are we are ready to bring it for this year I mean it’s already been a couple weeks some really good golf has been played already uh I don’t I don’t think anybody’s been watching live golf and John ROMs not on the PGA tour anymore
Again I don’t know if they’ve played the first tournament yet but an amateur has already won this year and you know it starts off always strong in Hawaii low rounds all over the place just beautiful course of kaaloa we’re here to talk about the start for the year we’re going

For us where do you want to start 2024 a few weeks in already there’s already been some action so I’ll let you kick us off do we uh I guess since you previewed it a little bit I think we just start off with the amateur Nick
Dunlap um I’m in I umum I I’ll be honest I’m gonna I’m gonna be V vulnerable oh God vulnerable here short circuit it again man twice we’ve had too much too long of an offseason but uh I’m gonna let’s let me rephrase this expose myself here a
Little bit because I’m not trying that that word again um as a golf journalist I’m I’m a little ashamed to say I don’t think I knew who Nick Dunlap was before this week did you no I did not and I think that’s okay dude the guy was 20 years
Old he was at Alabama he’s a college player look last year we did our top five college golf programs and Alabama was on that list but that doesn’t necessarily mean that I follow college golf as closely as I should look it’s an off it’s not a main sport and he did the
The reason I I was a little disappointed I didn’t know cuz he won the US amateur it’s okay yep I that is true that’s on us yeah I like to I like to watch that tournament when I can and kind of find the find the story lines and all that
Good stuff but um I did not know who he was and you know watching this tournament I think this tournament’s always pretty fun to watch it it doesn’t really get me going or like spring me into golf season but I think that course looks awesome
Um up in Palm Springs I I would I would love to get out there someday um I think also this used to be the Bob Hope Invitational regardless it doesn’t feel too competitive kind of Good Vibes kind of like vacation resor is style yeah absolutely you know it’s interesting
Because like the first two tournaments kind of feel like competitive golf even though they’re in Hawaii and this one feels like he let’s just kick back relax and see how low we can get because it’s always an absolute shootout yeah yeah for sure but but um where was I going oh
Yeah yeah so I I did um you know I actually did tune in a good amount at least on the weekend um and uh I was kind of shocked with all the football going on but it it got me pretty excited for for for the season and and it was
100% because of this amateur and when I’m watching the the tourament on Saturday Sunday I’m immediately thinking of Sam Bennett at the Masters obviously not as high of stakes but I’m thinking this that I’m looking at this as a great storyline the amateurs you know got a
Chance but you know he’s gonna fall short um and you know you just watch Sunday play out he has a few hiccups on the front line and you kind of think it’s happening but one thing leads to another and the guy it’s in the position with
The golf tournament and uh and he does and it was it was pretty insane to to see heral beat like you said JT Sam Sam Burns shley was kind of the mix I mean yeah you don’t have ROM I guess Scotty was in the field as well so insanely
Impressive and um it got me really excited for golf this weekend absolutely I mean yeah you mentioned Scotty sheffler is in the field uh second was the South African I’m I it’s I’m just going to say Christian cuz I’m not even going to try to pronounce Baden Hood
Baden Hood there you go well done apprciate I can there’s it depends on the word right for me surprised I got that one off guy name Kevin U Xander JT uh Adam hadwin Keith Mitchell I mean and JT Poston like those are guys who have
Won on tour in the past and you know what he went out and beat him fired a 60 in round three a 60 and look didn’t one of the hardest things to do in my opinion in golf is follow a low round in that case that’s probably a dead gum
Near career round for this kid yeah prob a career shot he shot 59 when he was 12 but okay yeah me and then I play the back nine exactly yeah but then he follows it up with a 70 look it’s would he Lov to shoot in the 60s again yes but he did
What he needed to do to win to your point little shaky ass start but dude when Sam bird made his mistake on 17 Nick Dunlap was right there to capitalize and ends up walking with the victory I will play a little devil’s advocate here on the uh on the 18
Toll I mean he he 100% earned it but on the 18 toll he uh he fans his drive a little bit right and I see that his approach shot I see him you know throw the four right and it is a group of people with mounds and a cart path and
The ball somehow like navigates threw all of that and like kicks left towards the green and I was like this ball was probably I can’t imagine how close it was to just being catastrophic but I just saw it land I was like how is that
Ball end up there and when you saw him walking up the Fairway with JT JT was like he said something like first time to smoke a fan or something because I don’t know I think he was JT probably thought he fired it into the grand stands probably trying to ease the
Tension for the for the kid a little bit Yeah but uh the I mean the ball just turned out perfectly granted he had to get it up and down and that was a tough t- shot to begin with but um I I was shocked to see that ball and upward dead
Yeah no it almost makes me think of the grand stand rule how dumb that rule is like guys will literally overshoot Greens on par fives on purpose because they know if it ends up in the grand stand to get a free job right it’s but also I know that’s a a little different
Case but if you’re going to win you need breaks you need the ball to bounce your way CU golf is so unpredictable and the margin for error is so thin that you either need like a break out of the trees or maybe the ball doesn’t go into
Water and like hanging on the edge you know what I’m saying they’re just you always need the ball to go your way and it did for him so big shout out to Nick Dunlap for coming out the victory 20 years old first amateur to win since Phil Mickelson it’s been 30 years or
Just over 30 years something like that he came out with the win pretty incredible that just shows how rare this is somebody was even asking me the other day how often does an amateur win never let me tell you that never happens proof by this and I don’t know if it’s going
To take another 30 years because these kids are getting so much better coming out of school so I it’s definitely look Nick D that proved that it is definitely possible will we see it again I don’t know probably not for a bit but it wouldn’t surprise
Me yeah so TBO I agree all right I got a hypothetical here for you actually it’s not a hypothetical because this kid is in the situation Nick Dunlap as you mentioned defending US amateur Champion a sophomore Alabama right or z a junor I think he’s a sophomore sophomore at
Alabama what do you do do you play as an amateur because he is exempt into the Masters now but since he’s not a card holding member of the PJ tour there are like a he doesn’t necessarily get the full things but look he is now into the
Masters he gets I think a two like 18mon two-year exemption on the PGA tour now for playing on this do you quit school and turn pro do you go back to school and still playing the Masters as an amateur as the defending USM Champion I mean you’ll always be the defending but
Like you know what I’m saying like uh what do you do do you turn pro because you’re still in the Masters no matter what now what do you do if you’re Nick Dunlap I did see that he dropped out of the State Farm this week he was supposed
To play out of Tory but dude I bet you his life is a whirlwind right now he is thr upside down so not surprising that he withdrew but yeah anyway I love to hear your thoughts if you were Nick Dunlap what would you do in his
Situation so I would say a few years ago I’m turning pro at the end of the season if not immediately probably immediately with the nil situation I think you can 100% keep playing college golf um the amount of money that’s going to be thrown at him
Just from that win and that you got the USM also I mean this is whether it’s sponsors um really anything and then if he really wants to do it I wonder like God I hate to even bring this up the live offers if that if he really wants
To do that he would never do that think US amateur no CH he probably is getting live offers though we would be naive to think that if he wasn’t for sure so in a way I think the money’s always GNA be okay for him um granted you never know
What’s GNA happen when you fullon turn pro but this guy’s got a hell of a track record and I think he can make a lot of money if he doesn’t turn pro so if it were me I think I would play out the year win a championship at Bama
And then jump in the summer as a professional yeah that’s interesting I you know let’s nil money has talked a lot about with football right football you got the transfer portal n those guys are making a ton of money let’s just say they’re making a ton of money same with
Basketball I’m curious about the other sports such as like golf tennis your non-revenue generating Sports what those nil offers actually look like I I’d be curious to know so if we have any college golfers out there and you want to talk about it hey come on we love to
Chat with you because they’re not Revenue generating sports but like you know obviously uh this kid’s going to get a lot of money that’s being a PJ tour champion and Alabama has some Deep Pockets we could tell you a story of multiple people have been recruited there who have changed the game let’s
Say had their lives turn upside down we first hand stories so but that’s not the point of this I guess what I’m going with it is how before this how much was he making in nil like obviously he’s a big time player right won the USA Amer Champion
Or won that tournament uh but like I this is life-changing money status though to go out and pursue the dream of the PJ tour but there’s also maturity aspect that comes with it I think and I don’t really know this kid or much about him but look he kept his Moxy enough to
Win a PJ Tour Tournament so I assume he’s M mature for his age and can clearly handle it but there’s also something about at the same time you thought you thought Matt wolf was mature yeah yeah I know F me right jokes on me there’s but there’s an element of
Learning to be a professional you know traveling every single week you’re not on a team anymore as opposed to like you are in college golf it’s just a little bit different y I’m with you I think I would hold off through the end of the
Year and then turn pro and then see what happens yeah but if the nil money is good that’s guaranteed you turn pro whatever you’re not necessarily guaranteed look also like stay in class take the minimum amount of hours which Al I think you just need to like be
Breathing to be the minimum amount of hours so whatever minimum hours you do to stay in school and play it close as you can to a normal PJ tour schedule as you can because look they’re not doing school anyway or the tutors will yeah yeah you heard the question
After the round you know do you have homework yeah are you g to do it or he like probably not or something like that so yeah exactly was good that was good yeah but I mean again incredible story congrats Nick Dunlap on winning it’s a life changer man for a kid in this
Situation not even of legal drinking age yet let that sink in but I bet you had a good time sa to say not to say that we would back in our College days T but no anyway shout out to Drew and shout out to Darren you know what’s up

Fantastic the views are amazing golfin ha why is M awesome also because of the time change steon they’re five hours behind us here in Houston love it and then Grayson Murray won the Sony Open really didn’t watch it sorry not gonna lie but worth mention was a that was a
Great tournament actually um was there a home one there was can’t remember I can’t remember um there was a three-way playoff and um Grayson Murray again Keegan Bradley and Ben on that sounds right yeah yeah Ben on Grayson Murray unfortunately has been the like punching bag of the of the
PGA Tour I feel like granted I think he gets himself in these situations but yeah most of it’s on Twitter and I think the guy is kind of a deag if I’m being honest but um it seems like he’s kind of been humbled and he’s had some Lifestyle
Changes kind of like Chris Kirk I think and uh battled back you know I I don’t know if I’m a huge fan of the guy but it’s good to see veterans win have that story but yeah I think uh Hawaii golf is always pretty chill to start the year
Followed up with the uh with the Palm Springs event it’s a good laidback start to the year but uh things are um I’d say things are going to amp up this week at uh the farmers at Tory Pines and we have a a uh a loyal listener who’s going to be

Anything he does he’s just so good and it’s beating a dead horse the majors what’s he gonna do um we can save that conversation for a different time I think the one we’ve probably said the same thing 10,000 times we’ll continue to say it but uh he’s probably a little bit older than
Phil when Phil started winning Majors he have a Phil Mickelson career from now um that’s one thing to remember but yeah I mean so this is this I guess this is a question I have for you we’re I thought we were gonna save it we’re not going
To we’re typically in a pool of some sort um selecting a team in the Masters and that generally um includes selecting a top five to top 10 golfer as your first pick will you be there will Rory be on your team um I’m probably not phrasing this
Question that well will you be do you think you will pick Rory and he’ll win one day or will you miss out on the Rory party okay I think I understand what I’m saying basically so like in every match this pool of kkut is one of the first
Ones off the board right yeah you think that if that BET’s ever going to pay off is that what you’re asking basically I’m saying are you going to wait wait it out till he wins or you just gonna put your hands up and saying I’m good to miss
This part this Rory party I’m not gonna pick him and he may win but that’s okay or you gonna live and die by him winning the Masters any major or the Masters we’ll say we’ll say any major oh if it’s any major then yes I will wait I

Years ago at the old course when cam Smith won Rory should have won that I mean but he he got outd at the end of the day cam cam Smith beat him uh the Masters I don’t know if I’m ready to pull Michael Scott and be like I’m ready
To get hurt again I don’t know if I’m ready for that yeah yeah no it’s fair okay I raise you this question would you rather hold out for Jordan spe to win at the Masters again or Rory maroy to win once I like that I’m gonna oh I almost
Think oh definitely Rory WN once um okay yeah I asked that because literally yesterday at work for background noise I had the 2019 Masters broadcast on in the background and I was listening to the 2019 Masters when tiger won and then next up on the suggested list was the 20 uh 16
Masters yeah is that the one that speed won no he won 2015 so Jordan Speed won the 2015 Masters D so it is nine years now since spe has won his first Masters and he only only has one Green Jacket keep that in mind that feels criminal that’s atrocious for how well he’s
Played that Golf Course over the years the fact that he has one green jacket is atrocious yeah that’s bad that’s very bad um just I don’t want to get too far into the Masters in in major talk because I think we’re gonna save that but uh we’re gonna kind of stay on the
Same topic but or different topic same idea hypothetical I just just remembered from a buddy of mine um that I thought was interesting that I wanted to to run by you all right one shot to win $10 million are you taking a eight foot putt with a little left to right break and
You got to make it or a 100 yard wedge shot no wind pin in the middle you got to get inside 20 feet I mean give me the putt give me the putt all day I can’t hit a wedge to save my life right now it’s no chance look 20
Feet you know what the PJ tour okay I’m going to look this Stu while we’re doing this right now the PJ tour average wedge from 100 yards distance the hole okay let’s see what it is because I bet you it’s about 20 feet if not more so the tour average from 100 yards
In in is 15 feet n inches so you would be a PGA Tour average to get that no chance there’s no chance I’m doing it look no no no no no I can’t do it give me the putt I take my chances but I tell you what if I hit that putt
My hands are gonna be shaking like I think that’s I think I’m with you I’m taking the putt but I do think the nerves it is way less nervy to hit that wedge shot than a a little slider or left right SL let’s be real if you’re if
You’re from 100 yards do you actually expect to do it because if you’re have an 8ot putt you’re expected to make that even though the PJ tour average from 8 feet is still probably 35% it’s not as high as you think it would be yeah so with 100 yards you can
Still a swing freely but like you wouldn’t necessarily expect it it would be more like great what a win but I don’t know know what do you think yeah I I um I’m with you I I feel more comfortable with the putter than a wedge in my hand
Um I I just I’d be worried that my hands would be shaking but no I’m with you you you never know it with the wedge you can hit it fat you can hit it thin you could shank it I would like to think I wouldn’t do any of those with the
Putters so yeah that’s a little bit little bit better shot at it okay um the average a at 10 feet a two professional makes 40% and a scratch golfer makes 33% from 10 feet so that’s that’s still less than half though for a pro that’s kind of surprising yeah yeah I agree
That just shows how hard golf is for sure you would think that would be like a free throw like free throw percentages yeah but anyways I thought that was interesting um all right another topic we missed a big big topic that I was invested in over the break

There’s not necessarily a needle driver across an entire Market in a sports League football uh maybe but like you can make an argument for Patrick Mahomes I guess now Travis Kelce but of his love interest but I’m not getting into that but there’s no doubt yeah I don’t I would no
Business talking about that I’ll let everybody else do that but there’s no doubt that Tiger Woods is the needle mover in the sport of golf and they had a phenomenal relationship if you’re Nike you got to be getting out of the sports game or the not the sports game the golf
Game all together M I think their apparel is doing fine but apparel’s gotten a lot more competitive and they no longer manufacture their own golf clubs anymore they started they stopped that a few years ago but like what are we doing here I know I
Would just like to know I would like to know how that stuff works yeah because is it like a tiger thing is it a Nike thing I still have a ton of guys I mean Scotty and Rory I mean that’s just As Good As It Gets behind tiger um I mean
Think about growing up though maybe we’re going to date ourselves for a bit everybody wanted to wear the Sunday red everybody doesn’t matter if you’re a junior golf like we were or if you were an adult everybody wanted to wear that Sunday red because it was that’s what it was Nike Sunday
Red nobody’s wearing Nike because Scotty shu’s wearing Nike I don’t think anybody’s wearing Nike cuz Roy maoy is wearing Nike anymore they’re probably going to get more value if they were the ghost sponsor good good or foreplay or any other of those YouTube golf uh platforms now but torate has already
Snatched a lot of them up so like I don’t know it’s a or or even pet it’s a very weird and strange thing there’s got to so that tells me honestly it’s probably more Nike on the decision yeah I um also I also wonder the um when tiger came back from the I
Mean I can’t even remember what injury now I think it was the latest back injury um no or it was the car wreck that caused a planner fasciitis or whatever whenever that was going on around the Masters last year he he switched to the foot Joys and everyone was [ __ ]
Their pants because he was that’s true wearing foot Joys and I wonder if that was like a middle finger to Nike right and kind of started at some some turbulent times but um I always thought I thought that was interesting um but yeah man the seeing tiger not and Nike will be insanely
Weird I always thought it was going to be like a a Roger Federer going to like unic Clow and oncloud and kind of doing something different like that when Roger was like the Nike guy so end of an era it was a hell of a run what a run

Kids I think she literally took everything um and also the um probably a year or two ago there was a PGA memes is a Instagram account the guy that runs it does like a MTV Cribs Style Show on YouTube and he actually did Pat Perez’s house with him and his
Wife a few years ago house is massive Mansion ton of cars and stuff it shows you how impressive that feat was that she pulled off but um it’s uh it’s kind of surprising because they’ve been together for a long time I think they just had their second kid she was also
Extremely supportive when Pat Perez moved to live I think she was is kind of calling out other golfers and stuff too even Rory at some point so kind of some Justine Reed Vibes going here but uh thought that was um thought that was interesting back to the Nike
Conversation in this YouTube show you’ll see that Pat Perez has the most insane Jordans collection of like anyone like he has a room dedicated the Jordans and I’m is it like PJ Tucker you know PJ Tucker the Rockets of the Rockets he is he is probably like close to he has a
Room dedicated the Jordans wow good friend so um I uh I wonder if she she snuck out with the Jordans as well but uh there was a lot of good things in that house I will say is one of the ugliest designed houses I’ve ever seen but uh go get go

Of those guys that he he took the bag he took the bag for live uh I think he’s a he’s an absolute character you still hate to see it though it I don’t wish that upon anybody and yeah it’s just it’s an interesting story definitely worth mentioning in the golf gossip

Legend the man loves him some Champions golf club and um yeah that was uh I think he spent spent uh spent a lot of time where he wanted to at Champion so yeah I mean look he he dedicated his life to the game and that’s what he
Wanted to do and surrounded himself with it man he did a great job with it yeah I think that’s an interesting point maybe we know that name so much and so well being from the Houston area as he was and champions being in our backyard and nationally though uh very like
Famous amongst golf Riders and historians because when he won the Masters if I’m not mistaken that was the year that Ken Venturi blew it in 1956 so but yeah again two-time major Champion winner you want to hear a crazy story all right here’s a crazy story one of
The Jackie Burke stories from so when he won the P when when Jackie Burke won the PGA Championship in 1958 or 1956 he gets the check the Winner’s check from the PJ of America the check bounced the check bounced that just shows at that time those guys were
Making practically no money and the organizations behind it had no money as well did the check bounce from the PJ of America when he won how crazy is that that’s insane that is wild he told that story to AR sherland and he passed that
