Fantastic to know I chat with you regularly who are you backing this week at the Farmers Insurance open in California that’s right we’re playing this week Tory Pine South course laa San Diego South California it’s set this golf course there’s two golf courses together right on the Pacific Ocean right on clifftops

There this uh South course has hosted the US Open a couple of times two decent winners Tiger Woods and John RAM and that that probably shows you what you need to win around here uh they also play one round on the Wednesday and the or the Thursday at the

North course that’s the um the easier golf course on the Tory Pines Property but we’ll go into that in a little bit more detail in a short while let’s talk around the South course first doesn’t really need a huge amount of introduction 7,700 65 yards she’s an absolute monster she’s the longest par

72 on the PGA T she’s also at sea level well okay there’s a few borders and whatever sort of 40 foot below the golf course but effectively at sea level 7,765 yards um the greens here we are dealing with poana for the first time in

2024 they are 5,000 square ft in size so they’re the smallest Greens in 2024 to date yet we’re on the longest golf course that kind of shows you where we’re at in terms of difficulty I categorize this as Coastal golf course it’s classical old style and it’s also

Midcore scoring so to win this tournament and it’s very very predictable it’s 15 to 13 under each and every year pretty much mid score so yeah it’s a challenge it’s going to be a challenge the nor uh also worthy of note the fairways are made up of Bermuda grass overseed with

Ry grass we’re also de dealing with kikuyu grass with Ry grass rough the rough is up this year because it’s been a bit of rain in the area 4 in in length over to the North Coast that’s a Tom Weiss coff redesign in 2016 Coastal yes Resort scoring a lot easier medium

Length it’s a 7,258 y par 72 uh we’ve got Pure bent grass Greens on this golf course 6,000 square ft on average are the size uh again uh Bermuda grass overseed with gy on the fairways rough is kikuyu grass overseed with r 4 in again in

Terms of the rough length this is the golf course really when you look at winners here you look at the splits in rounds one and two you’ve got to shoot 68 minimum on the North and I mean I’m going back to Justin Rose I can remember

Him shooting 63 in round one around here it’s all about getting um birdies and you score in the bank before you move to the South course for the final two rounds that’s what the North Course is that’s the positioning course to get you in that top 10 top 15

On the leaderboard heading in to Friday and Saturday on the south course and we know that Golf Course is an absolute Beast just to throw this out there as well Nick Dunlap last year last week 300 to1 as an amateur to win the American Express he followed on from graceon Mar

At 400 to1 and Chris Kirk 150 to1 the first three winners on the PGA tour in 2024 it hasn’t been easy to pick winners so far this year hopefully that changes at the Farmers Insurance open in terms of weather we’re looking at 16 to 20° in terms of temperature this week that’s

Pretty standard for this part of Southern California in January that’s 59 to 68 F no wind in the forcast of any sort there has been rain falling though on the golf course now I saw over an inch on Monday yesterday uh there was some rain also on Saturday and Sunday on

Top so I think for the first rounds certainly Wednesday and certainly Thursday I think we’re going to see a soft Golf Course or soft golf courses scorable uh whether they firm out with that kind of I think these golf courses are never going to be running US Open

Hot um they did say last year though the the fair the greens were quite firm they just released a little bit but I reckon for those opening uh for for Wednesday which is tomorrow I’m recording this on Tuesday and potentially for Thursday soft Golf Course conditions which on a

7,765 yard par 72 in terms of the South course may push you in the directions of those with a little bit of length off the te right let’s take you through The Strokes gained this week and I’ve got to say these statistics don’t really give give a lot

Away in terms of what we are looking for because you do get a mix of players that can W the win on this golf course now I’m looking at this in terms of Strokes gained uh we look at the winners here and where they ranked in the uh those

Categories across that week and we just average it through so off the tea Strokes G 26th uh that’s just about on a parile with the Sony Open 16th for approach that that is the weakest number we’ve seen so far out of four weeks so it was

10th for capala 13th for uh the Sony 15th for the AMX 16th for Tory Pines 26th for around the green I do think you need him around the green game here even you look at a Luke list who won here at 90 to1 long off the te excellent around

The greens abysmal putter but we’re talking po this week so team NOA in effect can be uh T green 11 and strokes game putting 20 they don’t really tell us a great deal and you tend to get that with classical golf courses where a John Ram can absolutely be a beast off the

Tea and te to Green and A Patrick Reed can be a short game wizard on on the same course and they both win the the year that uh the year that uh Patrick Reed run around here was absolutely crazy he was 31st for off the T 39th in

The field for approach Strokes gained around the green first T to Green 12th Strokes game pting 10th so it’s all up for grabs effectively it really is what these winners do have though Max Homer Luke list Pat Patrick Reed Mark lean they all had some decent inbound form

Even in the year previous to winning here on classical old style golf courses so that’s definitely an angle to look at if I’m looking at um traditional stats for around here um driving distance 25th it goes back to 2010 this is average within the field that week 25th for

Driving distance 28th for driving accuracy 16th for Greens in regulation 23rd for proximity to Ho 21st for scrambling 14th for putting average it’s all very gray very Magnolia doesn’t really tell us a great deal of what we need so we’re going to have a soft go

Through 4,000 subscribers this week my four tips this week I’ve kept it very very simple I’ve used lots of players in those upper reaches of approach off the te and te to Green I’ve also gone for a guy that’s driving the ball really really well at the moment not so

Accurate of his approaches but decent enough positive and has been absolutely brilliant with the putter that’s more of the Patrick Reed model that won here a few years ago it’s all up for grabs I only managed to get 12 to1 on Max home with three places each way first thing
