A little experiment to see the influence of using bigger grips on my clubs. I discuss grip size and provide some information that you can consider when it comes to choosing a grips size that is right for you!

Hey folks and welcome to Greg’s golf Shack it’s that time of year when I need to replace my grips now they say you should replace your grips every 40 rounds or so maybe once a season it depends how much you play from Individual to individual I play my clubs

All year round in the studio here out on the course and these are overdue to be changed now I’m going to do a little bit of an experiment and I’m going to put oversized grips on my clubs to see if it makes any difference to the comfort and

Playability of my game now I normally use midsize grips but I’m going to try something a little bit different and I’d also really appreciate if you subscribe to the channel I’m a certified instructor with the Canadian golf teachers Federation and I want to help you play better golf so before I rip

These babies off and pop on some oversized grips let’s talk a little bit about grip size and how it might impact your game now generally speaking if you have small hands they say you might want to use small grips and if you have big

Hands like I do big Ms you might want to use big grips now I currently use midsize because I’ve got some pretty big hands and the whole idea is that it’ll help you feel connected to the club but also allow you to release through impact very often the bigger the grip the less

Sort of wrist rotation you might have now I don’t know how factual that is it’s not an absolute formula because we’re all different it might be very unique between one individual and the next but it’s a nice little starting point to be able to figure out which

Grip you need to use and this is why we see a lot of big putter grips because it’s said to reduce a lot of the handsy sort of risty action and help us stay a little bit more Square through impact now the reality is there’s a lot more

Variables than just just hand size in our release we also have unique swings and patterns that either increase the amount of release we have or decrease it we might have different flexibility issues in our wrist there’s all kinds of variables that will go into what grip might be most suitable for us comfort

And what works individually for you is the priority now for me personally I have some right wrist issues I had a sprain and hairline fracture there when I was young I broke this forearm when as young it was very difficult to get in those textbook positions for that right

Wrist in the golf swing and I’m looking for something to help me be able to swing a little bit better and get better contact and better release through impact one thing I notice in my swing is it’s very difficult for me to keep this right hand the right thumb pressed down

On the golf club it really wants to lift off like that and that is at the top it can cause a lot of movement through impact it can cause a lot of movement as well so I think a bigger grip might help me feel more connected to the golf club

Now before applying some swing changes I used to have an outside in swing path with an open Club face this is classic for most amateur golfers where we slice the ball or have a fade that kind of shot shape and now that I’ve really focused on a lot more rotation swinging

Around my body rather than kind of sliding through I’m actually getting the opposite Miss I’m coming inside out and I’m closing the club face and a lot of my shots are curving sort of drawing or hooking to the left and I feel like a lot of that issue is because of this

Loose grip because I let that right thumb come off the club face so I’m going to experiment and see if these oversized grips will help that issue now if you’re going to experiment with different grip sizes I don’t recommend you regrip your whole set with something that’s different than what you usually

Play I’m doing this for experimental purposes and I want to stick to it even if they don’t really work I want to give it a week or two and see if I can adapt to it but the key is we don’t want to adapt our swing to the equipment we want

The equipment to adapt to our swing but I’m taking a little bit of risk here just to see how this all works out for the sake of the video I’ve got got some midsize grips on standby so I can regrip all these clubs again if I need to so

Let’s take a few swings I’m going to swing an eight iron a four hybrid a driver and a sandwich kind of work my way through the different types of clubs throughout the bag to get a baseline of what my midsize grip swings are like and so we have something to compare to once

We put the big size On So you can see distan is pretty consistent between the clubs but the eight irons uh pulled a little bit left one driver pulled way left and overcompensated going to the right so we’ll see if the thicker grips can help make that a little bit better the thing

I’m worried about the most is that open Club face coming back into my swing I’m hoping that I can still Square the club face through impact once I have bigger grips on there so I’m fully prepared for this to go all wrong but let’s experiment let’s see what happens now

With all that out of the way let’s check out these grips now I’m an advocate for Affordable Golf so I don’t always jump to the name brand clubs or name brand grips and I found some on Amazon that are very affordable let’s check it out

All right here are the grips I got got them from Amazon they’re champ key grips oversized it was about $65 and there was a coupon a clipon coupon for $8 off so for $50 $7 I got 13 oversized grips they’re a nice sort of soft spiral and I was surprised that

They kind of came with all the goods so let’s have a look here open it up there’s our 13 grips look they come with all kinds of instructions how to change it and I have a great video on how to regrip your clubs I’ll put a card up in

The top and a link down in the description you can check it out very easy to do and here’s the grips I already opened this up they’re very nice kind of that spiral design sort of a soft rubber not too tacky I think I’m going to like these and they feel good

So 13 grips ready to go on the clubs also came with some solvent and some tape now I have a big batch of solvent and a big roll of tape already but this is just a little bit of a bonus even came with a little rubber tool in there

That you can put in a vise to hold your golf club and I was surprised it even came with a utility knife to cut off your old grips so this is actually quite the package for $65 Canadian especially with that added coupon of $8 off and there’s even instructions on how to do

It on the bag and everything so this is a pretty cool setup Let’s uh strap them on see how it goes all right the grips are on now it’s the waiting game we have to let that solvent evaporate for about 4 hours we’ll check back in in a little bit 4 hours later

All right there ready these are some chunky grips they feel good let’s compare it to some of the results we had earlier and hopefully I don’t have to regrip these again and go back to midsize we’ll give it a Try Now the results show that the distances are pretty consistent with that last Drive being a bit of a mishit coming up a little shorter but all the shots are closer to that center line for a tighter dispersion let’s compare the two sessions side by side so you can see

Here in the bottom chart where we used the thicker grips all the shots are a little closer to that Center Line and I didn’t really flare any out to the right meaning I’m still able to release the club head well there we have it folks those are my results with going with a

Bigger grip and there’s not too much of a difference between the midsize grip and the oversized grip so I don’t think we need to feel like there’s going to be a big dramatic difference if we experiment with a different grip size now I’ve got to get used to these I’m

Going to try them out for a couple weeks and see how much they really impact my game that was just a few swings but so far I like the feel I feel like I was able to keep my hands on the club a little bit more feels like I’m holding

On to something that I can really swing so it feels good but you know we still need to see what the results are going to say over time I hope you like this content please like subscribe to the channel we’ll see you next time on Greg’s golf Shack
