Uh tough one real really just a abysmal as Billy worell would say and uh you know but really the the big thing or you know the main thing is right now just win this next game and uh Merl I think they got the bucks right where they want them I
Don’t know if that is the case we have a special guest with me tonight he is one of my favorite people he has done so many things in his career uh he usually is the one asking me questions before the game so it’ll be nice to ask him
Some questions he’s a star on WIP he’s still does Saturday and Sunday mornings with Mike silski on Saturdays and Jody McDonald on Sundays and he is the host of wp’s pregame Eagles show each week Glenn maau and he’s also an accomplished actor in at this stage of his life I
Know about accomplish but thank you well listen you have to be to work for WIP no but you you are just coming back from a run in um Young Frankenstein what was that like uh it was great uh hi Bob hi Merl thank you nice to be here with you
Guys tonight um listen I have a ton of fun doing that and uh I got to play the role that Jee Hackman played in the movie of The Hermit out in the woods that gets to pour scalding water on the monster’s crotch and uh the other thing
I got to do for the first time since I was in high school was be alone on my stage on the stage singing a solo wow which was a challenge for me but I I I love it Marl you know and you’re I listen I know you’re a fan of the
Musical theater I am I am a solo hold it it’s a solo from the musical it’s a song called I need someone but which you wouldn’t know it but uh if if you give me enough beers here tonight I’ll sing it for you well you are also one of the

Need the the visibility listen it’s nice it was it was Maron Mike and then you did a second edition called Mike and merils and both were successful and it was a lot of fun and the thing was it benefited first tea of Greater Philadelphia which is an organization that provides golf instruction and
Equipment for children in the inner city and you know how much I love golf and what a great charity this is it was great and it was really nice to work with all those people and I know your son told you it’s a good beer since since you don’t partake but we do
Deliver some to Mike on a regular basis I shouldn’t say this but he’s got a he’s got a case in his drunk anytime you need some I I I will be happy to get you listen listen that’s not a problem Glenn it has been a challenging year we’re
Going to talk football eh yeah we’re going to talk a little football it’s been a challenging year for everyone associated with the Eagles I think this is the first time a team started 10- one ever and failed to win a 12th game yeah um the the the closest I saw was the new
New York Jets I believe it was 1986 it was the Joe Walton New York Jets uh I think they were 10-2 or something like that or or nine- one and then lost out and didn’t make the playoffs so at least these Eagles made the playoffs it it’s it’s dispiriting you know the the
Words that you guys used to describe the last game it was it was so disappointing and dispiriting both on offense and defense to see it just kind of get worse week after week and you know you lose to the Niners you lose L to the Cowboys
They were kind of due they had that really tough streak and you got it uh and that game against the Giants back on Christmas all right they won they didn’t look good but they get their legs back but then the last two losses against Arizona and this travesty against the
Giants really make you worry going into the playoffs and into the off season and and the Seahawks don’t forget that and the Seahawks that that was that kind of like kick started that whole thing yeah it did cuz they had played their best game of the season against they gave
That game away yeah they were ready to win that game and then they lost that game they got got stolen late Seattle Seattle took over the ball at their own 8 yard line yeah with a backup with a backup quarterback Drew lock and they were a minute and 42 seconds remaining
In the game and they only had one timeout I mean how can you let them go 90 92 yards and and and with with one timeout and the Eagles never stopped them there was chunk play after chunk play and ultimately James Bradbury was waving it air yeah as the pass came down
The back of his jersey too much there um there was you know and and I don’t always believe the information that comes out of the computers that look at all the games and assess all these things but I remember they put something up at the end of the game that the
Eagles had a 96% chance to win that game at the end like you don’t lose that game and they did and and here we are and and let’s not forget the end of that Seattle game where Jaylen Herz and AJ Brown were freelancing you know they were kind of
Calling their own that that is still the strangest thing I’ve ever heard I love that though I mean at first that was the the explanation from Nick was that he was depending on a pass interference call yeah that one which I said that doesn’t make sense no nobody bought that
How do you because pass interference calls are the toughest to predict one time a guy gets waffled and there’s no flag and another another time he someone touches his fingernail and you see yellow all over the place you can’t that’s not a strategy no that that’s not
A strategy and neither is changing the defensive coordinator before that game you know I I think that has had a major impact on this team psychologically I mean that that just sends out such a mixed message you know well I don’t even think it’s a mixed message I think it’s a pretty
Solid message of panic uh it’s clearly backfired over the last few weeks the defense has gone from bad to putrid uh I mean you know you look at the coaches tape and you see guys running around but right before snaps knowing where they’re going running into each other um the
Defense amazingly got worse got a lot worse it is it’s worse yeah and um you know we can break it down however you guys want to break it down but in the first two plays of the Giants game when one of the best pass rushers in the
League is going back into coverage to start that game I don’t understand that for the life of me no and and each time there was a chunk play Yeah by Tyrod Taylor yeah because to his def in in his defense Tyrod not Tyrod you said in his defense Hassan reic doesn’t really know
Where to go when that’s happening if you know if it’s Thailand or running back coming off the line and he’s five yards deep okay but to be back there and have to do J do something that is not in his skill set is unfair to him yeah it’s
It’s very very strange you know I have to admit that there are people who looked at the Eagles early in the season when they weren’t dominating teams but they were winning and were sending up flares of concern I was not one of them
Nor I I I used two words I used the word resilience this team I even did a commentary about how this team is resilient and the other phrase I used was knows how to win this team knows how to win it’s almost a knack that they can
Somehow or other pull Victory out of the jaws of defeat but they did it with the exception of the one outlier I thought to the New York Jets but this team weak in and week out found ways to win well they they’ve lost that resilience and
They can’t figure out how to win yeah I kind of thought at the time like look this is their brand I mean you know kind of piggy backing out what you said like they can win these close games they know how to do it and I thought once they get
The wind under their sales and get their momentum and get their act together which I thought they would because of how well they played last year boy they’re going to be even more unbeatable um and there were people who I spoke with who I respect there were callers to
The show there were people I work with who said this team’s in some trouble you’re just not seeing it yet you know the the the the structure isn’t good the roof’s going to leak and I said no no they’re going to be fine and you know
Those people were right I was wrong yeah a lot of and through that that early success it was one turnover after the other well that’s the it was they were winning games where they turned the ball over three times yeah they won to spite that doesn’t happen do you know going
Into the game last week the Eagles the 11 and five eagles were minus 9 and turnover differential and the five and 11 Giants were plus n that’s that is so crazy because usually winning teams are on the plus side of the turnovers and the losing teams are down there in the
Deep minus numbers yeah I can’t explain how the Giants do that I that I I for the life of me can’t understand that cuz you would think they would would have a better record with that that in the Eagles case I think they were able to sometimes overcome that stuff but it
Tends to catch up with you and it certainly has caught up with them recently in a way that’s just is really bad is really to say what I said before really dispiriting particularly the quarterback yeah I mean he’s he ranks among the leaders I think he’s second or
Third in turnovers he’s got 18 of them last year he had six interceptions or eight interceptions all last this time this time he has 15 yeah but but he’s got a lot of fun but you know way as far as the interceptions are concerned a lot
Of them were situations where he had to throw the ball in tight coverage there were a bunch of them because of the pressure where his arm was hit and the ball fluttered into a defensive player and also there were two instances Glenn where in last year they really were in
Very rare H Mary positions because they were 14 and three this time he threw it into the end zone and it was picked off a coule times and and and that does explain some of them but I think he he doesn’t have the Knack he had last year
He doesn’t have the the vision I think he had last year um listen it it it stems from everywhere right the line isn’t we we’ve been saying so long it’s the best line in football best offensive line in football it it’s not it’s not right now it hasn’t been for a while uh
And that hurts him um I I think that some of the play calling is not helping him uh situations are hurting him but I can’t exonerate him from some of the blame himself um and I think some of it and this doesn’t relate to the turnovers
But I think some of a lot of his what what I see is a disappointing season is he’s lost the um his power at running the ball which was such a big part of his offense and their offense and when you take that away but you run the same
Offense which essentially they have it’s not going to work now maybe Merl will believe me I was talking about that while we were listen still believe Jaylen Herz is a Bright Young quarterback and I think he’s going to bee among the top of the game for a long
Time however I think basically they went into this year and they were programmed so that he was not really going to be a running quarterback they really wanted to minimize that to keep them healthy okay but here’s my problem and that’s fine if you want to do that I understand
You know whether it’s because he’s signing the huge contract and you want to protect him or you just think hey we need this guy for the years to come that’s fine but one of the things that disappoints me in serani this year is and he said
This a couple weeks ago he said my when when people were asking about Brian Johnson’s future he said it’s my offense this is the offense we’ve been running for three years it’s the same offense and I thought that’s part of the problem it’s the same offense other teams
Defenses have caught on to your offense and in addition if it’s the same offense but you’re not having the quarterback run it’s not going to work the same off it’s and it’s not going to work there aren’t nearly as many rpos or if if they are they’re emphasizing the r the the P
The P not the r not the r yeah I agree and and and I I mean I know it may sound simplistic and Nick knows a lot more football than I do but to me if you’re running the same offense but your quarterback’s not but that you’re taking
That weapon out of it it’s not going to work nearly as well and he’s not 100% no we’re going to we’re going to learn season that story is going to come out right well he messed up that knee and he was wearing a brace for what a couple of
Games and he has not and the the opposition knows it too they they don’t have to I don’t even think they spy him anymore no they don’t you know so I’ll I ask you as a guy as a as a beat writer you is it fair for me to believe that
The when the season ends hopefully not this week the story will come out within few days boy he was a lot more hurt than we ever let him yeah oh yeah yeah and it’ll have that uh that little edge of uh smear on it you know um company smear
You know like uh this is what this is why it really happened but I but it’s clear I I don’t agree I just by Design and I think and I think if you don’t if you take away the finger that he injured last week I think every quarterback in
The National Football League has his aches and pains at this point you yeah and two things can to be true at the same time I do think that they took a lot of it out by that but I think that when we at the end of the year when we
Look at his declining production overall what is a down season for him and I agree with you he’s I think he’s going to be one of the best quarterbacks in the league for some years to come but this is not going to be one of those years that they’re going to show when
The the the highlight film for Canton and when I think when that happened we’re going to learn or they’re going to say it’s going to be he was a lot more hurt than we 19 turnovers and and the other thing is Merill and and this is
This has been happening so much you know recently when he rolls out when he’s in trouble he runs towards the sideline there were last year he would have he would have broken that up field a lot of the times he’s not doing that now that
Ball just goes out of bounds but but let me ask you a question and Bobby is right in what he said he rolls out to the right yeah my partner who knows something about receivers Michael Anthony quick says why when he’s rolling right are there not any wide receivers
Over on that side of the field well that you’d have to lay on the coaching yeah that was because if that doesn’t happen the first week or two maybe you put on the receivers but after that it’s like guys and that is the way he rolls you
Got to get over there that hasn’t been the case all year Marl you’re seeing more of it lately with injuries to Devonte Smith and last week let’s be honest they didn’t have their top two guys in there in the most of the first half right AJ went down early so and the
Other guys probably they’re not as versed in that but um yeah but you know who should be you know you know and and I’m not really blaming the player here you’re saying Dallas scard yeah that last week to me given what the Giants were doing which was blitzing every play
Given that he’s playing with backup wide receivers it should have been the Dallas Goddard game it should have been Dallas Goddard eight catches for 110 yards and a touchdown and I I you know I didn’t see the tape I don’t know if he I can’t imagine he was covered that well by the
John iance but that that was a big disappointment to me yeah I and I told you we’ll take a break in a second I told you on the pregame show because you and Joe julo with whom you do the show and I like Joe uh had differences of
Opinion Joe felt they should just be resting the players and getting them ready for Tampa Bay I couldn’t see that when this team looked at I said to you they haven’t earned a rest and I meant that in losing four out of five games they had forgotten how to win yeah this
Team had to reestablish the fact that they are a good football team and go into the playoffs with a head of steam yeah unfortunately we got the worst of both yeah which is they didn’t rest the players they got crushed and they got injuries yeah so it couldn’t have been a
Worst Comin I think the only injury that will be significant is cydney brown who was not a starter and he’s out with an ACL I think the others I don’t know an MCL for AJ Brown I think I’ll bet you he’s not he’ll play but who is it going
To be I mean listen he walked to the locker room without a limp and he was greeting people at the locker room door and he didn’t need a boot he didn’t need crutches he didn’t need a Wrap to get out of there I think he had probably

With Ray Dinger who I think is busier now than he was before he retired Ray pops up every place now but you know one of the most interesting shows you’ve done and I’ve been I did one and I’ve listened to so many of them is you get a
Personality or somebody in the sports world and you do it you call it tell us your story yeah that has been a phenomenal ongoing thing thank you so that happened when the pandemic hit and you know everybody in the radio nobody was sure how long Sports was going to be
Shut down and I think we all thought a month or two or we didn’t think as long as it was and at the beginning everybody on wiip is kind of doing the hey what was your favorite game of all time or what was the Heartbreak or who’s the
Player you know the old chestnuts that we’ done over time and Ry and I kind of got tired of that quickly and we thought what we never have the opportunity to do is take an interview and make it more than one 15minute segment and we can do
It now and so we started Merl you were one of the very first we did I remember you were like the first or second week when we did it and um we loved doing them Ray and I are both old print guys and love to do you know something that’s
A longer story and we found that the listeners liked it a lot we were able to get some Fascinating People some local people some national people and we figured when the pandemic ended we would stop it and we heard from our listeners that they wanted us to keep it going so
We kept it going we did eventually we’s 110 of those 110 yeah so Glenn Mack now tell us your story where you never did Glen ma story you started out in in the Buffalo area I well I was born in New York City and my my uh my parents both
Were uh New Yorkers they moved to my father got tired of leaving for work before his kids were up and coming home from work after his kids were asleep so when I was three we moved to Buffalo New York my father actually initially thought it was going to be like 45
Minutes away from New York City little did he know it was 400 miles I grew up in Buffalo uh loved Big Bill’s fan was a kid during you actually loved Buffalo oh yeah you you didn’t mine three feet of snow every other day when you grow up in
Something like that you just think that’s what the world is right and so you don’t know that other people are like enjoying sunlight uh so it was like that’s what it was and it was I I played hockey and I skied and I did stuff that
You do if you grew up in cold weather country and I I loved it Niagara Falls not Scutter Falls yeah there you go yeah I mean grow up 20 minutes from Niagara Falls it great there a lot of I mean it’s great you you never went over it in
A barrel I didn’t no I didn’t um although the the cool thing was I I lived there when I was a kid and they turned it off for a year to do these scientific experiments and when they they turned off they diverted it so it basically they they turned it off and
When they turned it off a couple things one is the floor of it was all silver and gold for years of people throwing coins over that had just become embedded in the Rock uh they found more than a few B and they found a chest with $20,000 from
A bank heist from 1937 or something really yeah that Wonder went yeah yeah there you go gang uh anyway so I I I grew up there I went to college uh in Boston where I met my wife you went to where Boston Bost University that’s right never confused with Boston College
And inferior School uh so were were you a hippie uh I was right at the end of the hippie so I yeah you had long long hair but big long curly hair and a mustache and and all that from yeah all that stuff studied journalism and history became a a newspaper guy went
From um uh Coco Beach Florida to Fort Lauderdale to Detroit came to work for the Philadelphian Choir in 1987 I was a political writer is actually what I started out as were you really yeah yeah I I actually one of the first things I ever did was cover a
Ronald Reagan campaign when I was 25 years old uh when he was running for president so I did that um and then I I was in Detroit and an opportunity came up the to cover Sports as a business which it turned out that nobody else
Wanted to do so I’m doing like the labor issues and the see that’s that’s what I remember yeah you doing lengthy pieces for The Inquirer on the business side of sports right so I came here to do that in 1987 and did that for about 6 years um
Eventually the inquire and I got a little disenchanted with each other WIP was starting this fledgling new thing it was the second sports radio station in the country after WF uh Angelo caldi of course you remember went over there first did just did a great job and then other guys from
From the paper started going over Al morganti went over Mike melli went over and then when I got the call I was I was ready to make that career shift uh worked with jod McDonald who was just terrific to work with Mac and Mack that
Was one of the Great in it was really fun Jody’s a New York guy and a and a very different guy than I am which made it so much fun and a great teammate just a like you and Mike I mean it’s just you know well we like each other yeah and I
Really and I just like Jody as a guy he’s just this entertaining engaging good guy um I did middays and then I did Nights from 6 to 10 for a few years which actually I did solo which was kind of fun because I had to work harder and
I had to to develop other things I was on that’s when the Phillies were on 1210 and so I was on against the Phillies which for a sports station is not ideal no so I would do things like the movie Club for Men and I would do these food
Hunts and I would just try to create this you know other other stuff I did a tournament of the alltime Great Eagle teams I think you I got you to voice some of that for me yeah yeah which which was fun and and I remember you
Were trying to rate the best burgers oh yeah I did these cheese Steck yeah put on about 15 lbs I know you actually went around sampling right I did 45 pizzas in 45 days one year Merill not advised my cardiologist told me I had to stop doing
Those things yeah we did pizza got best burger yeah uh chickens and pizza chick and we’re Chi and P after the answer to any of these questions is chickens and P right now after chickens and piz okay yeah well at the time who won the oh the
Best burger was Village whiskey was for upscale place uh Shake Shack won for best fast food and there was a pub called dog and bullet still around out in uh Bucks County yeah that made an amazing Burger those were the the three categories the three winners um I worked
With so uh 10 years ago um wiip decided that it didn’t want me to be there full-time and at the time it was really scary but I went part-time and I uh was working with Ry which was a blast oh yeah for Ray and I did actually 21 years
Together 21 years isn’t that amazing yeah it’s pretty good but you were writing books by that time I was writing books yeah yeah I so I I wrote about six or seven books and I got into the be did you do the one on Sports movies yeah Ray
And I wrote the the the ultimate book of sports movies which you’re quoted in by the way well I should be because I I am a movie fan yes you are I think you asked me my favorite sports movie football movie sports movie but you it was a football one football movie Jim
Thorp All America I love that that’s in the book I love that but my favorite football movie to this day is everybody’s all American which by the way I want to tell you Ry and I did not argue over a lot of things in that book
Because we had we had to agree when we ranked him one to 100 and there were just a couple we disagreed on that was one that I always likeed more than him your endorsement of that movie moved it up about 10 spots on the list wow yeah
That was a Frank Ford book yes turned into a movie novel and it was Loosely it was Loosely based on the life of Billy Cannon yeah the Heisman Trophy winner who ended up in the AFL yeah who ended up as a counterfeit I didn’t remember that part of it yeah that’s interesting
Well there you go um so yeah I was writing books and I and I got into the beer business and I got into acting and I just trying to keep busy as I get old that’s my story that’ll keep you from never getting old yeah there you go
But uh that that’s funny I I remember all of those things yeah didn’t you do another book on best sports arguments or yes so I did a book with Angelo so I I decided it’s always easier to not write a book by yourself so I did uh I did a
Book with Angelo on the uh 50 greatest Philadelphia sports arguments which are all the ones that we’ve sat around bars and had over the years uh and I did uh I did one with big the late great big daddy Graham on the ultimate book of Philadelphia sports list and yeah so you
