Can’t get really as close as as we do to the goalkeepers as in you so you see an awful lot going on on the pitch that you perhaps don’t see from the stands so you get an understanding of how tough it is for goalies at times and um and the
Things that go on to try and put you off and and unbalance you when you’re jumping and all of that sort of stuff so I do get that side of it um but you know it was a foul I I I I’m absolutely in
The C in the in the camp of it’s a foul based on uh you know he’s he’s just adab Bale’s body position is he’s he’s not jumping the when I first saw it I went well it’s a foul and then I kind of went let’s try let let me try and get around
The fact it isn’t a foul and and how can I give that goal if I was I mean there’s an element of a player doesn’t have to get out the way of a goalkeeper you know if he’s standing in a position I don’t have to move you know there but his body his
Body movement and he’s and he’s leaning into him and and sort of backing into him as he jumps is a clear indication one he wasn’t going for the ball and again he doesn’t have to go for the the ball he can stand where he wants but it’s his movement to the goalkeeper as
He jumps it’s it’s a foul I think if if though if if Trafford was a center half on the halfway line and that was a center forward and he backed into him and stopped him jumping for the ball the ref would give a free kick so you know
Again V has a look at it and and I don’t think you know in in the in the in the great scheme of our V supposed to work is it a clear and obvious because is it a clear and obvious mistake that referees made and then you have to say
There’s a lot of people certainly a lot of pundits I heard saying it was a goal so in that in that sense of how you describe it it’s not a clear and obvious error because there’s there’s a split decision on it so then it should go to the referee’s onfield decision which was
To give the goal so um you know you can argue it both ways my personal view is it was a fil I was listening to someone this weekend who said they’d been watching football for over 30 years and did not realize this rule okay so I’m just going
To read out something that I saw on a on a forum Rob Green said he’d been told as part of the review panel that if a keeper comes out of the six- yard box they get treated like an outfield player in regards to contact hence why they
Allowed the luten goal so I think we’re talking about mainly corner kick so if a corner swung in and you’re within your six-yard box and you come and make the claim for the ball and you get fouled then the referee will always favor with the goalkeeper within the six-yard box
But as soon as you’re out of the six-yard box if you get clattered it seemed like 5050 as it would be an outfield player so shoulder barge there is no favoritism towards the goalkeeper outside the six yard box were were you guys aware of this because so many
People are saying this is new news to them I wasn’t aware and I’ve been retired 20 years plus I played 22 years as a pro the the reason that the reason the reason that I’m puzzled with it is because if like in the six-yard box now you you know you watch corners for
Instance you know the players are right in on the goalkeepers now you know and there’s a lot more going on on from corners and that’s inside the six-yard Box you know so I don’t understand what you know where it’s changed to be then be outside but the the thing with the
With the Trafford goal is that if if a Defender goes for that ball if he’s going for that cross like that and then an attacker blocks him off like they did Trafford and then somebody else heads it would the referee give a foul yeah I I I
Agree and and and again it’s the same it if it was on the halfway line with the center half yeah he would if some somebody backs in and doesn’t jump to the ball and he’s looking at the keeper and then all the center half and backs
Into him he would give a free kick so I but I didn’t when when Rob Green said it’s part of the review panel I don’t know who’s on that review panel and and you you did mention the word rule uh Lindsay I don’t know whether you
Know whether it can’t be a rule or a law law of the game Well it can’t be a law of the game either because everybody surely would know about that I don’t I don’t I’d be interesting to follow that up because I I was unaware of any difference between six-yard box and
Penalty Box and and then again you if that is the case what happens if he’s on the line of the six-yard box and he can’t the got fou outside the sixy box foul it’s like why is there always a gray area in football I mean you just literally
Nailed it on the head there dick like about if it’s on the line we have this in football so much how about if it’s the it’s if it’s the toenail or the armpit why can’t we just get clear well he might foul his left leg which is inside the sixy box and put
His right leg he doing the body as he fing like what what are we doing to the game it’s gone nuts yeah well that was a new one on me and when I heard when I heard this listener talking about it I thought I’m going to have to ask David but I mean
The fact that you were completely unaware it make it makes me think that sometimes these things are mentioned to back up the referee’s decisions at the time and I don’t know I mean contact outside the six yard box I always thought that a goalkeeper if if you if
You were going up to catch a ball and someone put in I don’t know an outswinging corner and it was round about the penalty spot if you went to claim it but you got bundled down a little bit like what happened with the Trafford case you’d think it’ be a foul
And to the goalkeeper wouldn’t you that that would be my immediate Instinct so are you saying though if you’re in in the six-yard box and and you’re Edison Martinez uh Allison and you go for the ball and you absolutely flatten someone CU you’re a big bloke it’s fine but if
You’re Trafford or pford then tough really cuz you’re going to get pushed around more well it’s like when we’ve had these conversations with David who said about jumping with two feet and just making sure that you you don’t think about the player around you is what you’ve told us before is that you
Just want to get to the ball so that’s fine if you’re in the six yard box but if you do that to come and claim a corner that no yeah I know at the moment you know if you look at the the corners that are coming in you know the amount
Of goalkeepers that are getting pinned on the line they’re getting obstructed on the line you know and you know we we saw it with with David reyer you know I think was it brenford no not brenford I can’t remember who it was and they put like about five players all around him
Because they knew that he you know he’d been struggling on crosses before you know so they’re blocking him off even before the ball’s coming in well in fact I was watching the game I was watching the the to I think it was the Tottenham game last night and um yeah I think it
Was and I was like I was talking to my son about it and I saying before he took the corner I said I’ve we’ve noticed commentating every week how more teams are just going right everyone in the six box and then and and it’s actually um
You know I I quite like it from an excitement point of view because there’s all sorts going on you can watch you know though everyone’s you know having a little shove with each other and also you’re basically taking the goalkeeper out the game because unless it’s on his
Gloves he’s can’t com for anything because he’s so many bodies and you’re saying basically was if you’ve got someone who can deliver the ball the same place every time in the six-yard Box you’re basically saying it’s a 50/50 with with the Defenders and the and the
Um and the attackers and you can get a bit of look and it can fly in so I I actually think it’s Pro because very few goals are scored from Corners anyway whatever it is 8% or or whatever the low figure is so if you can increase that by
I think we’re seeing a lot more we’re certainly seeing a lot more of that type of corner going on so he’s basically saying like keepers out of the way because he can’t he can’t do anything he’s basically trying to get people off away from him and again I said to you
You know earlier you don’t have to move out the way of anybody on the pitch you can stand still and just be a nuance and if you’ve got enough people around you know David obviously have more chance of getting out and getting something because of his huge size um he did help
And but as you said some of the smaller goers are really struggling to get past big Center arms and Center forwards so you kind of go in right 50/50 had to gone see what and you’re only you know six yards away from the goal so you seeing that more and more often well
Addy B had been really cute you know because Trafford had been coming out all game claiming crosses especially like outside his six off box and the way that he did it was um was good because he he made it look like Trafford had run into
Him and if you watch it he just has a little glance he sees him coming out and then he like he acts as though he’s just like being hit himself you know so I think that was like one of the it it was smart thinking on his on his point but
Um you know for me it’s still a foul um and I don’t think I’ve ever seen Vincent company that that mad after a game if I’m honest and especially in front of the cameras they did well Luton yeah it was a good game they did you know to be fair
They deserve something out of the game do you think they’re the best of the of the promoted sides Dio we we were talking about this they surprised me a little bit because um you know you know I thought maybe they might be the the weakest um but yeah I think they’ve
They’ve shown that um that if you’re brave you’re brave enough and you have a little bit of belief um you know what you can do and I think they’ve taken a few teams by surprise and and you know we’ll say it a lot of times about going to places like
Um Lon and going tell you what some of them some of those boys won’t fancy it and and it’s and it only you only have to be at two or 3% off in this league to to not be right on it every single game
Just to get a little bit of a shock and we’ve seen already that Lon can do that and I think uh moving for and I and I I guess the neutral I don’t know you won’t get as many Watford fans saying it but I think everybody in the Le League who
Who’s a neutral will go yeah Watford uh Lon stay up because it’s you know they’re a good little club and you know they’re trying to play the game in a certain way so I think they’ve got the the kind of Hearts of the the neutrals well I I think that’s probably played
Out even more during the course of the season because I think coming into the promotion everyone had that fairy tale story of them coming through all the leagues having all the points that they had deducted which seems quite prevalent doesn’t it at the moment when you look
At Everton’s case and what’s going on with Man City having a review to come in the future in the summer and it’s just one of those topics I think that you look at reading as a football club as well and you see that despite all of
That they managed to get back to the promised land then you have the Tom lock year incident then you have Rob Edwards coming in and bringing players out of obscurity like Ross Barkley and Andros townend who suddenly playing back at their best and I think it’s all played
Into this cauldron of people really rooting for them well he’s he’s he’s they’ve got a bit a little bit of a soft I’ve got a little bit of a soft spot for them as well based on the fact that I left half my uh skin off both hips there
When it had a plastic pitch so I feel as I feel I feel as if I’ve left a little bit of Lee Dixon on that pit somewhere so you’ve literally got a soft spot and I also got um I also got the best right hook I’ve ever had in my
Playing career off Mick Harford playing there back in the day when it was I think I think luky was in goal even before Dave got there so it must have been 88 8 9 and I was I don’t need your sign and I um I was play I was quite
Vocal on the pitch trying to organize even though I wasn’t I I’d only just come to the club I was a bit of a gobby so and so on the pitch so I was like drop off you know push up all try to organize people Mick Harford after about
20 minutes look look over me and he went will you just shut the effing up he said you’re do he said you’re doing I you’re giving me a headache and I didn’t know who Mick Harford was so I kind of turn turn around and I said I wasn’t talking
To you Steve Bal was standing behind him when I said it Steve was going don’t say anything to him and I was and I was like I don’t I said shut up so Mick looked at me and he went so about three three minutes later we had a corner but Corner
Against and I was on the far post and I was standing on the post like I normally do doing nothing and Mick was standing next to John lukic on the goal line and John goes Dio go to the near uh front post and on the front post I went
Started jogging past MC arford and when I got level with him he just went like this he punched me straight literally straight in the eye and just went and I was completely flat and I was semi knocked out and Gary Le came on with a
Sponge and put it on my face and I said what happened there I and he said to me what did you say to Mick AR and I went oh so and I sort of stagged back on the pitch and Mick off looked and he went
Let that be a lesson to you I tell you what Mick Mick had a bit of a soft spot for me from that moment on we all he lived in uh Haron where I lived and every time I saw him in SSB or doing our shot you used to
Go little I’m going to punch you again in excuse me running round s like this try to get away from him oh that’s brilliant [Applause] This is Seaman says I wanted to get both of your reaction to the really sad news about Sven yor and Erikson this week um he’s had this diagnosis has hasn’t he about a year to live pancreatic cancer um I know David you’ll have many memories and and Lee I just wanted to
Get your reaction as well yeah I mean it’s he hugely um surprising where when somebody and he he was obviously a very is a very fit man from the outside and he you know training running keeping himself in good shape and it just shows that how fragile this life we all live
And take for granted is at times and and it’s just another message to everybody and I’m sure he’ll say the same to his family and everything is about you know take every day and and cherish it and because one day it you know we’re something like this can happen to
Anybody so um it’s Brave of him to to step into the um the media like he has done and and share his message and I think that’s you know any pluses and and positives out of out of this will come from him over the next few months and we
We must all be obviously um mindful as well to to give him the peace that he needs with his family and but it’s it’s great that he’s come out and and because I think he’s somebody said I heard somebody on the radio this morning saying how cherished he was as um as a
Foreign manager to I think he’s very well loved and liked and he was when he was Inland I didn’t obviously play with him but they and and I’ve heard stories I met I tell you what the the on very small we played Sor when he was manager
Of Sor and I was coming off from the the pitch before the game after the warm up and I was running down the tunnel at hybrid and I went up the stairs and he was coming down the stairs and I kind of looked at him and I didn’t know whether
He knew who I was or or what you know he seemed like it was just before the game so he’s in his game mode and he he he was just about to talk to somebody and he he stopped and he turned and he he
Kind of looked at me and he put his hand out as I ran past and he goes hello Lee Dixon pleasure to meet you and I was like wow I was I was like Wow and Le me away a little bit that he kind of knew
Me and wanted to say hello and what a love what a lovely guy so that’s my that’s my memory of him and and and and he’s you know he’s still fighting and let’s hope that um you know he gets some sort of piece moving forward yeah even
Even with when he was England manager because I only had him for I think it was about a year and a half um because my last game was 2000 um but you know as a as a as an England manager as as Lee said he was a
Very well respected guy um and and Brilliant you know we we qualified easily um and with the that he had you know apart from a certain goalkeeper letting a longone range shot in the the world we might have gone on they’ve been playing that this
Morning David I hate to tell you it was I bet they have as well yeah I’ve got it yeah I’ve got it on speed D screen saver but yeah a very a very gentle man a very nice man and um yeah all all our love goes to his uh his family and um
You know hopefully he can enjoy try or try and enjoy what what life he’s got he has a very positive attitude to it all and you see him doing these interviews from his house and I’ve got to tell you both I’ve been to his house so no myself
And Haley McQueen um part of the offside rule we went and we did a road trip to sven’s house to go and do an interview with him and he he bought out some I think they were home made biscuits but there were biscuits and tea and coffee
But our journey to get to his house which is very North Sweden which is pretty much in Norway because we actually flew into Oslo um but it was a terrible time of year and let’s just say on my journey to his house we had a
Higher car and I drove down a ski Lane because you couldn’t actually see rather than the the road so yeah so I just saw all these cross country skiers coming towards the car I was like oh my God where are we and she’s like I think you’ve taken the
Wrong I think you’ve taken the wrong lane they have a whole Lane spe um yeah so how we got there in one piece ourselves I I don’t know but he he turned a I think it was a care home or an old PE it’s certainly a different use
Of his property but he turned it into this lovely home which is on a lake um and yeah and I I heard him when he was doing an interview this morning even saying about having visitors round and I was thinking yeah he he does he opens he
Opens up the house to people and yeah he was a really lovely welcoming guy and I don’t think I’ll ever forget that image of him on his doorstep waving Us in as we came in in a like Fe at punto or something um rental cars seems to be a theme this
Morning it is it is I’ve Got to Now say that I was slightly late because my rental car was being picked up this morning and I realized I’d left dog por PRS on the passenger seat so I went to go wipe it down yeah rental
Cars what did you think of Man City at the weekend I thought they were they’re just getting started aren’t they well it’s quite annoying even though you know lifelong City fan um I don’t I want him to come second every year because I obviously want Arsenal to win the league
And win the cups and and they’re just in the way aren’t they it’s just like a like a a nuisance um and you know the fact that de bruyne came back and really struggled to make an impact when he came on yeah that new signing they got de [Laughter]
He’s got he’s got a new hair do that’s for sure so um we uh yeah it’s I mean they they just turn the screw when they um when they seem to get they seem to like wait till Christmas and then just go should we should we start the season
Now um they’ve been they’ve been off what they normally are up until now and then there’s been signs hasn’t there and the the medical list has started to clear up and and it’s you got some youngsters coming through as well that seem to be you know doing what they do
When they get into the first team at at city and and play with a supreme confidence I think that comes from from Pep as well as all the academy staff and coaches they obviously coach in a certain way that that enables them um you know that pathway to open up and and
Then step into the first team and feel comfortable and even though with all those Superstars around um Pep’s got a culture there that that is um that just keeps working from from each team they go through until they meet reach the first team and yeah I
I’ve said at the start of the season and nothing is is wavered even though they they’ve been a little bit off the pace for them um they’ll I think they’ll win it again and um and it’ll be a an unmatched four in a row and uh everyone’s playing catchup um and you
Know that going going into the last bit of the season the last half of the Season there’s going to be because he’s quite competitive up there there’s going to be teams that take points off each other and I think you know that’s that those teams looking in are going yeah
Teams are going to take points but City might be the ones that everyone doesn’t take points off then they end up even big you know could be a bigger margin because the other teams are taking points off each other and City just beat everybody and um yeah I think you know
Liverpool have got certainly got Firepower enough um to to make a challenge for it and and I think Arsenal flitting and out as we go go on I don’t think they’re good enough um and again not quite up to that standard but they they’ll learn again but they they
Certainly need to um to strengthen in in the obvious positions that we talk about everyone’s talking about Center forward and I think what I always what I always do at the start of the season is kind of look at the teams that are play but everyone’s got no suspensions and a full
Squad and you go wow they look strong and and you expect all the big teams to be strong so you can’t really take a lot from there I think when you get to Christmas time and you see the injuries and you see the suspensions I don’t look
At the team that is playing I then look at the bench and I go right what’s the what we got what’s that team got to change something that’s not going right cuz in in in essence if you whatever team you’re putting out the first 11 should always have um a set way playing
And the players that are coming in know what’s going on so it’s not a massive change but I think when you looking at the bench and the te and the players that don’t play regular and you’re asking them what are you going to do to
Win this game or what are you going to do to to not lose this game that’s a big more bit more of an emphasis on how good you Squad is and certainly when you look at Arsenal Now you kind of go right who have they got to change a game and you
Go you know Smith row hasn’t played that much trossard good player but is he you know is he the one in ketcher still questions about him so the actual bench at the moment um doesn’t look like strong enough to be able to sustain a challenge and that’s what city demand of
Everybody a sustained amount of um Quality uh games and performances and results that that challenge their to total of points which is always you know up there yeah I saw I saw that with the Liverpool as well I saw them playing and I I looked at their bench and theyve got
Like gakpo Nunes and and jot like sat there waiting to come on I was like that’s what that’s what’s that’s what it’s about is it it’s about that that strength on the bench and what can you bring on to change a game the thing as well city is what they’ve got with the
Young players isn’t it I mean the composure from Oscar Bob that and Cole Palmer who they let go to Chelsea but there’s constantly new emerging Talent yeah no they and as I said that’s that’s Pep’s not just concerned with the first team you know it’s a whole you
Know whole ethos of what he’s about right throughout every team in in the in the club and you know that’s what that’s that’s how brilliantly run football club and um you know we we yet to find out out further down the line whether they’ll pay the price for being able to
Produce all those players with the amount of money they spent and and all of that going to come later on but from a pure footballing point of view they’ve absolutely got it spot on yeah and then they’ve also got that like no don’t panic you know even going
2-1 down at Newcastle you know it was it was just they were just playing the same football you know then they bring de bruyer on you know for the he gets straight away gets a goal he gets an assist and um yeah they just quality you’ve played in you’ve played in teams
That um you know when you do go one nil down it it doesn’t change anything you know you I I can’t remember playing in any any of the teams that I played in and going oh God unless it’s like last kick of the game and you go well I can’t
Come back from that but anytime during the game you go one nil down you go hasn’t changed how I’m going to mark this player has it changed what I’m going to do I get the ball because I my my patterns and my my five passes are
Always on and Dennis is coming here and I know Patrick will be there and and he’s not not going to be there because we’ve gone one nil down he’s still going to be there Dennis is still going to make that run sier is going to be over
As a far stri Striker so nothing changes the only thing that Chang we just have a little word about all the players you’ve just mentioned clang just just day to-day teammates mate you think Dennis and tiar are on podcast going yeah Lee Dixon was at back [Laughter]
And but that’s that’s see that’s what it was like though isn’t it you know like you say we didn’t use to change but but that’s because we were successful and we believed in what we were doing you know so yeah and that’s exactly what they I
Said at the start of this start of the Season that whoever finishes above Man City wins the league um yeah yeah I I can’t see anybody at the moment match of the day did a whole feature didn’t they on the quality of those five goals in the
Match and they did goal of the match instead of goal of the month and oh my I mean I was screaming Bernardo Silva as well because that first goal I just could not believe the audacity because he meant every part of that and it’s so hard to even connect with it when you’re
Facing the right way let alone yeah see I I I didn’t agree with those three monties on Match of the day you you do think it was Bernardo Silva didn’t you no I think I think the better goal I mean it’s bril he brilliant don’t
Get me wrong he a great cross and you know but he a oneoff skill thing I think the the um I would give it uh Bob because I I think the the the run you know he’s a young lad and he made a little made a little run in and then he
Went and de bruyne’s Vision to pick him out and then the actual ability to cross it and then the touch on his first touch youve got a tiny little bit of look off tripa but his first touch was so soft and was almost like he was using his

Different grounds but when you go St james’ f it doesn’t matter where they are in the league they could be bottom mid-table anywhere you get the same thing it’s like the Newcastle experience and I love going up there to content they’re so friendly the fans they weren’t so friendly when we were playing

Save really good and and it was a foot save you know so it wasn’t like a flying dive or catch or anything like that is he stood big and then when you get one-on-one with the goalkeeper like that the goalkeeper you have to wait you have
To wait and wait and wait and then make the mind up for the striker don’t make his you know don’t you make his mind up you know so if you go one way early he’ll just take it around you the other way and that’s what I loved about
Martinez is he stood up long and and then right at the end he decided to go which is the right thing but he still left his big right foot out there and uh made a fantastic save from that and then literally within seconds he made another brilliant save with with his left hand
Down low to his left and touched it around for a corner so yeah Emy Martinez gets my gets my save of the wheek not just for a save of the week but a double save and was the second save better um the second save was more
Reactional Lindsay um you know CU it was it was through bodies and through legs I think the first save you know when you one-on-one with a striker that’s that takes a lot of bottle you know and it’s a case of C Mar like who who dares wins

Anyway because he’s not been doing it this season um um yeah I saw him doing it last season and we actually took a photograph of him doing it you know with his back to goal with the guy with his ball with the ball at his feet and I and
I like I freeze framed it and then sent it I was like this can’t be right mate but then you see Martinez doing it but the reason that they’re doing it is because it’s the fastest way back into position yeah you know and everybody talks in goalkeeping about don’t crush
Your feet and you know shuffle side to side but it’s always the fastest way to get back into position and that’s exactly what Martinez was doing although it is risky because if that gets highlighted players will look at that you know and then they’ll think of it in

Little did I know that BBC were going to run them backtack programs you know so it was um yeah it was quite surprising but but we missed them we missed both shows I I miss and I want to go back and watch because I’ll be able to do on ey player
