State right right welcome to Robert seabird high school and Robert SE bird flying e Eagle basketball on the RCB SN Network into the gymnasium and about the the only thing that will get me out of the house on a Saturday afternoon in January is good basketball game we
Believe we have one lined up here for you this afternoon as Lincoln County comes up 79 to take on the Flying Eagles in what is a game that was just put on the schedule recently uh or at least after the season began so uh to give you
A little background on Lewis County and to visit or I should say Lincoln County and to visit with uh coach basil Lucas I talked with head coach basil Lucas uh earlier this week about how The Season’s gone so far and their upcoming game today with Lewis count with L Lincoln
County I should say so uh let’s take a listen to that right now welcome to outside the nest on RCBS I’m John Griffin we’re actually inside the nest today and we’re talking with boys basketball head coach basil Lucas basil Welcome to the program thanks for having me I really appreciate it we
Appreciate you coming on so let’s talk about the season uh we are just past the uh winter break uh you’re starting into the meat of your conference play and I know you haven’t had things go exactly like you wanted to them have them go so
Go as far as they have right now but you’re young well you know that’s not an excuse uh youth isn’t an excuse uh and in all honesty our our season has started out uh um every day we’re getting better you know with with a group that is a little
Bit youthful we are getting better every day um you know what I attribute our record to is we play great competition you do I mean there’s no ends or buts about it we’ve uh you know I I talked with the team the other night we’ve played uh Logan who’s currently ranked
Fourth we play East Fon who’s currently ranked fifth uh we we played uh SC who was ranked eth when we played them we played uh bridgeford who is currently ranked in Triple A 10th so with you know we’re starting five sophomores right now in our top 10 players we have uh
Actually our top 11 players we have one senior and one Junior that plays the the senior plays uh is roughly right now getting about 15 to 18 minutes a game so the sophomores in that group are playing most of the time uh I’ve seen a considerable difference with the group
From today than 3 weeks ago they’re improving every day and that’s the beauty of of a young team they come in and they work they work they work individually they work as a unit we’re getting better offensively we’re getting better defensively we’re getting better at taking care of the ball we played uh
The top like I said East Fon is the number uh five team in the state a senior Laden Group is playing seven seniors against us and uh we actually won a turnover battle in that game uh they’re starting to get more comfortable on offense they share the basketball and
We’re going to get better and better as the season goes on there’s no question about it and it’s almost unheard of at really any level to start five sophomores like you are I know when I make out my lineup card I look and I see sophomore sophomore sophomore and I
Think man there’s only room for improvement I I had a college coach stopped me after uh our tournament the second day of our tournament and it came up and he said you know coach he goes I like your young group he goes you know what though he said you got a nice JV
Squad and I looked at him and I smiled I said but they’ll be a really good Varsity squad here by the end of the season and he said it as a joke he wasn’t being demeaning to the kids he’s just saying when you’re starting s you know five sophomores and as many
Sophomores and a freshman that are playing right now we are really young talk about a couple players that are standing out for you right now I know you have two players that transferred in last year that are both well one’s a sophomore the other’s a senior but the sophomore has never played organized
Basketball except for maybe one year yeah I mean he came in last year and that’s a kid that uh both both uh sincere Nan who’s a senior and Cameron newon both moved here from Philadelphia uh we were just talking the other day in practice actually yesterday and uh uh
When I was talking to uh junior about expectations as a freshman playing in the program and I said you have to look I said here’s Cameron who played on the freshman team last year we didn’t even pull him up to playing games till the last six games and that’s because he
Never really played organized basketball he was really raw he needed to work on a shot and what cam did is he came in every day and worked extra to get better at him that’s the only reason he was pulled up at the end of the year and you’ve seen a tremendous growth spurting
His game in a short period of time because he’s put the time in outside of our practices he’s individually worked really hard and I can attest to that because when I come in for early early Duty in the morning at 7:30 there are kids in the gym and they’re shooting
There’s either three or four of them sometimes and the Nisan boys are two of those kids that are usually there absolutely I mean those those kids come in it’s it’s they they do exactly what you ask them to do they try to do what you ask them to do when you’re when you
You give them uh uh you know uh constructive criticism they they think about it they process it and they starty start doing it and that’s what I love about this entire group nobody questions anything if you say hey you need to work on this or hey let’s try to do this this
Way let’s do that it’s yeah coach hey let’s do it and it start just getting done and that’s why we’ve improve so much in a 3-we span too they’re they’re they’re they’re doing what’s best for the group all the time the only thing I would ask is can we get a nickname for
Sincere cuz that’s really hard to pronounce on the radio sincere maybe Cincy or something cuz Cam’s easy I can go from Cameron to cam real easy so you know if you can work on that yeah yeah we just we we we say sin do this sin do
That okay there you go we’ll go with that okay that’s what we do we just you know you create a nickname you just shorten it up and got it got it that makes it simple so on Saturday you’ve got Lincoln County coming in um talk a
Little bit about them and what you try to uh want to hope to be able to accomplish well Lincoln County is a game that wasn’t even on our schedule uh you know I you I told our team coming into the year last year’s group played more state tournament teams in the season
Than any other club in the state of West Virg which means we play a stu schedule every that’s because of two things it’s hard for us to get games right teams just you know we we The Good the great thing about being over here this has been a great program the bad
Thing about being over here is trying to schedule games the teams don’t want to come over and play they don’t want to put us on our schedule right okay so we’re always playing quality competition that’s a good thing because it makes our kids better and then you know if you’re
Going to win a state championship you got to play top competition so I have no problem in that but Lu luckily about a month ago where you have 21 games luckily uh Mr post had sent me an email and said Lincoln County needs a game and so I uh took the information contacted
Their athletic director we had a great conversation and we decided you know we’ll go ahead and play this game today uh tomorrow and uh you know from there next year we’ll go down there and play a game I don’t know a whole heck of a lot
About them I have one film on them they did play one common opponent they played Scott and Scott beat them 76 to 7 they did have two players with 22 points in the game and I’ve watched the film on them I mean they’re they’re uh they got
Some players that can score so uh you know that’s it’s going to take a great defensive effort like it always does for us to win and uh you know like I said we’re getting better offensively every day so I think our Point totals as the season goes on is going to continue to
Increase increase increase the more comfortable they and we want to remind you since that is a game that was scheduled late in the season or after the season again that is this Saturday the 13th and it’s a 2:00 start coach so if you’re planning on joining in on the

Running the show for us so Jonathan as we said in the uh earlier opening Lincoln County I got that right this time Lincoln County comes up and uh comes into the RCB gym tonight today this afternoon to try to uh see if they can straighten out their record uh along
With RCB both teams sporting losing records right now yeah both teams really are looking uh for anything they can do to get in that wind column Lincoln County coming in at 2 and six and the Flying Eagles at 2 and5 so really you know whichever team can walk out of this
Game here with a victory they’re going to feel much much better about the young season yeah of course we don’t know a whole lot about Lin County they are about an hour and a half south of us or more uh they do have a record of two and
Or I should say three and six Robert C bird did play last night they got beat on the road against Lewis County so they now stand at 2 and5 overall let’s take just a real quick look at the projected starting lineups for Lincoln County it’s number 13 Eli
Smith number 11 Aiden schaer number two Grayson Ellis number 35 Wyatt Edwards and number five will Shepard and actually I believe number zero Dakota wood will be starting in place of will Shepard for your Flying Eagles number 11 Anthony barberio a 59 sophomore he’ll be joined in the back
Court by number 12 Logan Boyce a 511 sophomore in the middle cam Nan a 6-2 sophomore Carson Bennett a 6-3 sophomore also in the starting lineup and we’ll round it out with number two Manny Holmes who is a 6-1 sophomore Lincoln County is coached by Brad Vance in his
First year of course basil Lucas the head coach at Robert SE bird in his third year so we’re just about ready to kick things off here in the RCB gymnasium this afternoon Lincoln County in their dark Road uniform forms a little bit of Carolina blue in there uh a little bit
Also like uh the philb barar blue and of course RCB and their white home jerseys Carson Bennett the 63 sophomore number one he will jump at midcourt with number 35 Wy Edwards Edwards has the advantage on him at 65 and he does control the tip for Lincoln County so RCB into their halfcourt
Offense and bad pass there but Robert Z Berg gains control Boyce at the top of the key and he’ll give it back to Barbaro and Barbaro will set the offense nice pass inside to Bennett he’ll dish out to Boyce on the perimeter for a three no
Good balls out of bounds to Robert cird so far good ball movement here this opening possession for the Flying Eagles really good entry pass by bario to Bennett just couldn’t uh and then kicked it back out to boy just couldn’t find get the shot to
Fall it was a nice pass into Bennett but he was challenged by Wyatt so did the right thing to kick it out Boyce just couldn’t hit the shot Lincoln County in a two3 Zone to start the game Robert C bird running the high low offense against that here’s Manny Holmes with the drive
He’ll kick it out Boyce will put it on the floor he’ll drive Baseline and gets a nice reverse layup for the bucket yeah really nice reverse layup there by Boyce good patience yeah and good acrobatic skills in the air there’s RCB with half court pressure
Looking to trap over on the far side of the Court yeah and we want to keep an eye and see the the fatigue factor for the Flying Eagles a quick turnaround back to back you don’t normally don’t see that a whole lot in high school basketball unless it’s a tournament
Style right and I did talk to coach Lucas and he said they did have the guys come in today and just shoot around a little bit I know you were adamant about that when we talked about it earlier this morning yeah it’s just always good to have that shoot around make last
Minute adjustments and get the guys loose so Robert C bird in a man-to-man defense and can’t get anything going for luk Lincoln Lincoln County right now they’ll throw it in deep to Edwards nice little spin move but he leaves it short rebound is Boyce and Boyce looks like he
Got poked in the eye yeah that that was two offensive rebounds on that possession for Lincoln County so they’re they’re really going to go hard to the board so it’s going to be a big key factor here in this game for the Flying Eagles to box out and you can already
Feel the pace of this game is kind of slow both both teams well I should say Lincoln County is in a zone so it’s going to slow things down and robery bird tried to press and tried to trap that first time but yeah it looks like
Tried to speed it up yeah it looks like we’re going to have two you know different styles type of play with Lincoln County wanting to play much slower and from what we’ve seen so far in the season Robert SE bird wanting to play much much faster and really push the
Ball somebody needs to tell Manny Holmes that he can’t wear red spand deex he’s going to have to get a new pair I’ll have to talk to him about that he has the red spandex on underneath his white shorts but he’ll probably run laps Ball’s knocked out of bounds so

Barbaro uh a three is long from the left side rebound [Applause] Panthers here’s Dakota wood giving the ball inside to Edwards nice move so Edwards scores the bucket for the Panthers and a really good find there by Ellis to get that ball into Edwards quickly back down Court are the
Eagles Eagles just looking to find an open shot an uncontested shot right now bad pass will turn the ball over to the Panthers Ellis with the drive inside the lane he puts up kind of a wild floating shot but it goes yeah looked like a little Runner got it

Okay so Manny Holmes will inbound the ball on the Baseline for the Eagles into Nan over to Boyce back to nsan over to Holmes now and Lincoln County is really extending that zone yeah it’s it’s a really extended Zone and so far that first possession Rober SE bird did a
Really good job of penetrating and getting the ball in open gaps but after that they’ve really struggled to get anything inside against this Lincoln County two3 Zone and if we notice the high post is usually what’s open and and it’s it’s wide open right now and it
Would serve RCB well to put a man in there somewhere here’s Boyce with the drive can’t get the shot to go rebound Panthers no question that Boyce was bothered by Edwards on that shot here’s schaer with the ball off to Edwards Edwards puts the shot up kind of
Awkward can’t get it to go and it’s going to be out of bounds off Robert C bir and it’ll stay with Lincoln County yeah and Lincoln County’s got a big B Advantage right now on the boards out rebounding the Eagles 4 to one here’s a quick pass inside to Smith

High post area you don’t want to necessarily move when the defense moves because when the defense moves then you’re going to be open so if you’re moving with them you end up covering yourself up yes there’s a nice drive by Manny Holmes on the left side of the
Basket uses his right hand gets it to go here’s Lincoln County County back down Court tood to wood with a jump shot that falls Short wood back with the ball here’s a three no good Eli Smith couldn’t get it to go here’s sincere Nan back down court with the layup can’t get it to drop but he is fouled so sincere Nan will go to the line for two and the Flying Eagles have
Been really good tonight when they’ve limited Lincoln County to just one just one shot attempt got the rebound and out and run and it’s when you give up multiple offensive rebounds that it really hurts and it’s really hard to get out in transition and run yes so sincere Nan gets the first free
Throw to go and at that time out I believe coach Lucas made a change he put sincere Nan in for his brother cam Nan and cam is going to play the high Post in that zone Now in the zone offense I should say he does Miss a second free throw though and Lincoln County controls Edwards in the high post nice pass to a cutting Aiden schaer who scores the bucket yeah really good find there by the big man for Lincoln County Edwards RCB beats the pressure back down
Four they had a two-on one but a bad pass by Carson Bennett just didn’t quite have the angle on it probably should have elected to go up with that himself that’s a third turnover really kind of unforced right by the Flying Eagles now Robert sub bird in a full

He’s just he’s just a hard Hustler he’s fast but he’s also quick first shot is up and off the front of the rim and what I mean by that is some people are fast but they’re not quick some people are quick but they’re not fast he is fast Baseline to Baseline but
He also moves quickly side to side and he’s also he’s he’s he’s pretty well built for a freshman I mean you you you think of most kids that are fast and quick and you think they’re you know tiny kids but but Junior Smith’s got
Some meat on his bones and here he is he misses the second free throw but he automatically gets in the action and causes a tie up and that’s going to stay going to keep the ball with the Flying Eagles and if you’re the Flying Eagles as many possessions as you can get a

Boys team here played Lewis County last night at Lewis County the night before the girls team played Lewis County here and they ended up uh snapping Lewis County uh Lewis County girls were undefeated and they snapped that uh win streak so great win for the Robert cird flying eagle girls basketball team
Dickerson makes both free throws looks better on his free throw attempts tonight than he has been in the area that he has in the past here’s a trap by the Eagles Lincoln count Lincoln County is able to pass out of it and cam Nan gets a hand on the ball and that’s something
Jonathan that they keep track of how many times the ball’s deflected yeah I was going to say you know that’s that’s one of those big statistics has really come a long way is how many players just getting fingertips and and fingers on the ball and deflections because that
Comes that that’s it seems such a small minute stat but it’s really important when it comes down to winning yeah and I’m not a statistician but I will tell you the more deflections you get the more opportunities or steals you’re probably going to get well I did it for

To get going today but once you got going you you went well I’ll tell you what you know we played last night against a really good club Lewis County on the road and then you know you turn around you you play that game and and get out there about 9:30 last night you
Know we tried to get them in here around 11: just to get their legs loose again and we watched a little bit of film on Lincoln County and uh you know they came out in this Zone and and and and we stood at with the Zone initially and uh
You know we had a call time out there tell them you we got to start getting some movement we got to start get looking at some high low stuff uh we got to start hitting the gray areas and and you know you know against Zone you got to knock down some shots
Um and we started to do this last night a little bit in the second half against Lewis County uh you know we we got to start throwing the ball down the court you know our advantage to a lot of a lot of nights is going to be our athleticism
And uh you know that’s what I’m most proud of when that this game got separated today it was nothing other than we were rebounding the ball making passes and and and and and running the full court like you’re supposed to like good teams do and and and again I’m glad
They got to see that today because that’s going to change the rest of the season now yeah if you can push the ball down the floor and even if you push down the ball down the floor and you get a turnover at least that’s a turnover on
The other end it doesn’t hurt you but the other time times you will convert that or draw a foul well you think about how many times we were going up and down in that that situation and we only had 10 turnovers for the game I’m going to

Just a delight to watch I mean Jonathan pointed out that during one 15minute session there or 15 second uh play of the game he had his uh finger on the ball almost the whole time well I mean he he’s just when I say scraping the surface of of a basketball player right

Doing these things and it came in the next day and started doing it you know and you know any kid that has an opportunity to to develop is a kid that wants to listen you know anybody tell you all those top-notch college players all those NBA players those guys all
Wanted coaching they all wanted to be coached and they wanted to learn things that they didn’t know and uh you know we have some kids here and that’s why it’s such a pleasure to coach them too as well I think all coaches have some of
Those kids and you know you do a great job you and your staff Justin Noble with bringing them along and and putting them under your wing and and showing them hey you’ve got to do this you’ve got to do this if you want to play more and if we
