Cleveland golf released the the halo irons, hybrids and hy woods for review. using guide rails, rebound technology, and main frame face tech for an easy hitting golf club.

A golf club named after a city supposedly the most forgiving stuff that’s out there let’s talk about this club review Next welcome back to the MC Golf Shop Jim mclear here in this MC Golf Channel we talk about Golf Club reviews golf club repairs and golf club fittings also your scores can go low if you would we have a live stream take a look at that it’s on Mondays at 7:30 sorry

17:30 p.m. Eastern or 5:30 p.m. Eastern talk about the same stuff it’s just a live it’s a it’s a one-on-one chat between all the people that come to visit and me a seven time Golf Digest America’s best club fitter and the last International clubmaker of the year so

Uh let’s talk about let’s talk about this review Cleveland all right Cleveland Cleveland is a uh is wouldn’t be considered one of the top three to be sure uh but they do make some very forgiving stuff their claim to fame is the Halo Halo for several

Generations has been kind of a a hybrid iron and it just to be to make golf fun for the the person that probably doesn’t go out or doesn’t have a lot of athletic gifts okay and that’s not to say it’s a bad thing it’s just that’s what it’s

Made for right to make golf fun to have you know allow you to have a good time make things easier to do so how is this Halo put through for the whole of the entirety of the set well there was a design application and it gave kind of

Like a crescent shape on the top and the Leading Edge of the woods and that was what defined them because in the beginning the Halo had kind of a scoop in the back after this after this Crescent and that was some time ago now now since then the the the swoop or the

Scoop scoop has been has been removed and it’s now looks normal but you still have the Crescent so since that time frame Engineers have gotten involved and they have several pieces will column of technology that are to help you hit the ball easier right the first one’s called the main

Frame now the main frame it’s not necessarily probably the best name in my opinion but it works the main frame is basically the face all right the face and of course they’ve taken thousands of shots and used computers in order to come up with what they believe is the

Best face for their product and what that’s supposed to do is be more forgiving on off-center hits you know it seems to be the theme this year off-center hits and the club has this very large appearance at a dress even though it’s 460c now normally when that happens the

Club gets elongated this way in order for it to go out this way where you’re viewing it on the top it has to go this way when it does that it gets a little thinner and that means you can easily get under the ball so those guys are

Teeing it High may not want to tee it so high okay and then and get it out there this is all perspective right now I’ve not hit the first Golf Club the second part is called The Rebound frame now the rebound frame is that they call it like

A face within a face or trampoline within trampoline whatever you want to call it but there you have the initial face and somewhere back some distance back behind that face is another I don’t know if it’s another face or just another portion of the body in order for it to

Double trampoline now this was a a concept that was pretty popular we’ll say several years ago before this was and they called it the face within the face and it worked pretty decent so I’m going to assume this is going to work pretty decent as well okay now that is

Present in their driver fairywood they have a Highwood and a hybrid and those are where those are you’re going to find a lot of that okay the last two pieces of Technology are called the action weighting or action Cal uh counterbalancing and what that means is they’re putting about an 8 gram weight

In the back to kind of counterbalance the club eight eight Gams I won’t say it’s significant but I won’t say it’s nothing either the the the counterbalance is when you get the get the weight in your hands it allows you to feel it and you can track it with

Your hands in order to sling it through that was a trick a lot a lot of long drivers used to do in order to create a little bit of Club head speed to help them with the whip and they were very aggressive swingers the other part is the Glide

Rails Glide rails all right now that’s present even on their on the Halo irons it’s present on the Halo irons in that these rails and they’re different on each one they’re kind of a tape Ed Rail and some have three some have two and they’re all bit different for each

Application is for Turf interaction and I’m big with Turf interaction because if you get stuck you can’t hit a good ball and these Glide rails will get you through the turf and act like skis in order to allow you not to get stuck in order to get out there so that’s what

They’re saying now in the Halo iron well we’ll we’ll split it from there so what we’re going to do in this is we’re going to split this up we’re going to have irons and hybrids we’re going to have woods and drivers okay so this is going to be on the beginning of the

Second one as well so in the irons in the Halo irons uh each head is a little bit different than the next I know normally it is but in this case even more so in that at the topend with huge soles lots of guide rails it gets down

To the pitch and wedge and it looks more like like a normal iron would be although a very large sole it’s out there okay and the hybrid same concept it’s a Hybrid Club guide rails rebound frame main frame all this stuff in order to help hit that so that’s what we’re

Going to do right now and uh and then we’ll see what happens uh the next the next video will be on the woods so whenever we get these irons in or whenever we get these clubs in uh we go to the shop and we measure them so let’s talk about

That okay so we go into the shop the very first thing we do is we measure them for length Okay and we’re just going to go give you a laundry list you’re going to see it on the next video as well uh in the drivers the drivers

Were 46 in long that’s a bit long for me but it it’s all in the idea of hitting the ball far now as far as Lofts go I got there I had two drivers uh one was 11 one was measured to 11 the other one measured to 10 and they’re both 105

Drivers so a half a degree off is actually very very good I got 61 and 60 in the L angle and they’re supposed to be 60 so we’re still on track a degree off it could be my measurement error and it could be Manufacturing tolerances in

Either case one degree is very very good uh the the swing weight was supposed to be D3 and D2 they came out one heavy in each one at D4 and D3 that was because of the weight of the shaft all right I’m not going to go crazy about one swing

Weight point albe it to say that uh because it’s 46 in if they were take that half off it’d be massively light all right the fairway wood was came in at 432 again I think that’s a little long but that’s their design spec so that’s what we’re going with uh it was supposed

To be a 10 uh I’m sorry it supposed to be a s uh 15° of Loft I got 17 now we’re starting to get on the edge of my acceptability is it okay yes but not as much as I’d like to see because now you’re only one

Degree from a fivewood uh supposed to be uh 57 and A2 L angle and I got 60 and A2 this is where that one’s outside my tolerances so that out of three that’s only one check so we’re what nine or 10 specs so we’re not doing too bad swing

Weight came in exact D1 to D1 they have a Highwood this Highwood is the is kind of a hybrid between a hybrid and a fairway wood and it came in at 40 2 or yeah 422 and it was supposed to be 17 it came in at 19 again this particular one I

Think what caused this was the rails the rails set on my gauge in such a fashion it acted like it was adding Loft and that was what we were talking about the rails so that could be design error on my point uh supposed to be 59 it’s 60 so

We’re still good there supposed to be D1 it was D2 So within one these things aren’t too bad save this Li angle that wasn’t very good at all okay in a regular hybrid it came out 40 A2 which is traditional length uh it was supposed

To be 21° Loft I got 22 again one is not too bad supposed to be 61 I got 62 I don’t mind an upright but it’s still one degree off and D1 D1 so it was right on that one now on on the Halo iron and the

Halo iron uh I got 37 and 5/8 this the weirdest thing and it’s supposed to be 37 and a/4 so it’s a/4 inch off huh what does that mean that could be the grip cap of the grip cuz I believe that they’re all cut to the same

Length and maybe it was 37 and A4 that they were cut to and then that was the grip cap that added the extra length I don’t mind that either because that’s the way we do it here uh supposed to be uh we got 30 was supposed to be

29 and I got 64 where the spec was 63 I got a D2 swing weight and it got a d0o again that might be getting outside my my uh level of saying it was good or excellent but that’s too so as you can tell there’s a lot of specs that we do

And we take and that’s because you’re going to pay a lot for these why not make them correct but how did they come out they actually came out pretty good right save one or two specs out of the Dozen that we took that’s uh that’s not bad not bad

At all so the quality of this build or the quality of the manufacturing is right there so now let’s go hit them all right so here we are with the Cleveland we’ll call it the Halo 7 the Halo 4 hybrid and the Halo 3 Highwood now as I

Told you before we’re splitting this up this is the we’ll call it the working Club section of it the irons the hybrids in this Highwood and then the next time we do this it will be the 3-wood and the driver I’m getting kind of excited about

This because of some of the results that we saw so let’s just start right out with it we’re going to go to the the seven and again like everything else we want to see how it hits so if we start from a look back you can see I sprayed a couple

And we’ll take care of that here in a moment but takes off nice highlights they come in there Landing very soft and most of them are hunting the center line I my typical pull you will always see that so not too bad there goes the the four hybrid and this thing sprayed way

More more than I desired but it got out there and uh just looks like it’s raining I do I like the feel of it but it just looked like it was raining all right three the uh Highwood and here again this is a club that once I get into Fairways or

Something along this line this is exactly what I expect I I don’t carry these so this will be an interesting an interesting find okay so what I did is I hit about 10 with the the iron and just to get warm up and I hit eight with the other two so there’s

The 10 not too bad right that looks pretty good and then here’s the eight kind of Center lined as far as the oval goes some left some right uh some in the middle not too bad then we go to the high uh the high wood and most of them

Are flaring off to the left which is a fade for me and then just a handful over here so this is what we’re seeing right so now let’s go what we’re going to do is we’re going to start pairing some of these things off so if we go to this one

And we’re going to pair it down to let’s just get it down to oh four or five we’re going to take the these are all the ones getting warmed up so there’s the seven there’s four of them right there all right so let’s go to the hybrid we want to let’s start off

With number one number two looks pretty decent let’s take out number three we got one two three four there so let’s take out that guy that was my normal pole that I would normally have and we’ll take out that one right there and there’s our four for that one

And then in the next one we are going to there is my first one ginormous fade that made things a little easier right uh 1 2 3 4 there we go with that one and with that one one two three four and with that one there we go so the top

Four of all of them I usually do three but why not this one so the seven iron worked I mean once I started getting on it these are literally the last four shots uh just getting more and more warmed up not too bad uh the the hybrid

Uh reaching out about where I think it should reach out to not too bad I have no idea on the three Highwood it’s 17 degrees if we use 17° and compare it to my hybrid this should be carrying about 225 to 230 now this isn’t this club here is just basically an uncomfortable

Factor and we’ll see why here in a little bit all right let’s go take a look at some other stuff all right so on the Halo and the iron the swings are looking pretty decent they’re not too scattered in the hybrid not too scattered and the other one didn’t

Collect a lot so not too bad the shaft wasn’t working very well for me but it was in the iron all right so let’s go back now and see how these things look now that we’ve got them all done all right so the seven iron 175 178 that’s a

Pretty stout seven iron for me uh I like that I mean it’s easy to hit I’m really down the middle hit a 138 smash factor which is really really high for an iron but it is a a uh you know you know it’s a hybrid iron so we that’s the

Expectation the Halo 4 uh 4 hybrid uh this is about a 210 Landing club for me I would think right around a 210 to 215 Club did exactly what it was supposed to do it landed right there swinging 148 one swinging at my fastest but it was

Still popping it out there and uh just a little bit Lefty right you saw all the stuff that we did uh that I removed but uh all in all it did what I asked to do and the three hybrid uh I think it’s a little shy and although I did hit it

Very well the 149 smash factor I was finding the middle of the club uh maybe just a hair too much Spin and that could be because of the shaft because it had an Ascent uh regular flex shaft in it that could have added a little bit of

Spin versus the other ones had something that was more stiff in that not that I’m a hard swing or anything but I do load down towards the bottom and that right where the uh that’s right where the the shaft would probably loosen up on me uh

I had everything coming up on the up which was a good thing um the funny part is all my classifications are straight so now let’s take a look at the new flights if we uh if we look at it like this let’s look at it again like

That that’s all three of them four of them right there of course looks like tight as a drum nice club easy to hit uh really I mean just super duper easy to hit and we’ll talk about it more here in a little bit all righty so here’s the

Hybrid once we pair it down it’s still a big ginormous fan uh two down the middle that one’s not too far off that one’s my typical pull uh could I play it yeah I could play this one and then we have the three Highwood and it’s all over the map

And again I don’t necessarily think it’s the club per se as it so much is the uh uh as it was just me being uncomfortable but if you look at it in reality not too far from the center except for the one one big fade all righty so we’ve seen

All what we need to see we’ve regrouped on the landing areas not too bad still got to work on my long game uh let’s go talk about this some more okay the Cleveland clubs surprisingly nice right the the seven iron went where I wanted

To go went as far as I wanted to go did very very well the hybd gave me a feeling of hitting hybrids that I haven’t felt in a while it was actually quite nice it got the distance I wanted but the variation and the dispersion was not what I was looking

For and I think that has to do with the shaft the shaft might have been just a hair week I’m not going to say I’m that super strong but when you get a real flimsy shaft it can make that it can make that happen Okay and then the

Highwood I never really thought I would be able to hit a a a utility would of that nature normally they I don’t agree with those but I made some very good contact and it was kind of a a a hit it really good hit it average hit it really

Good hit it average out to about 235 and for what it was I would say for me a hair short now that’s not to say the club was bad it was just to say that it’s not a club for me all right if I put it up against my hybrid my hybrid

Would probably win and that was more because it’s set up the way that I like to swing much like in the other hybrid so but surprisingly they all feel really good so they did exactly what they were supposed to the rails underneath uh guide even through my uh artificial turf

And it’s not just a mat It’s actually an inch thick Turf so it would guide you through that particular area so even deep shots were way more forgiving than they would have been say if the sole was narrow okay the the way that they designed add a dress they don’t look

Real Bulbul particularly in the irons because it’s of that black scoop nature it doesn’t distract from the attention at a dress the hybrid and the Highwood just look like normal golf clubs so yeah they were in very very nice shape so again uh if you’re looking for something

With a lot of forgiveness once you get the right shaft length and those types of ideas from a fitting put into uh and put into this club you could have a real winner so check them out at Cleveland golf.com and their sisters uh shrick on they’re right there with them on the

Same website if you uh please if you do like subscribe put some comments in the show notes below and as always let’s see your scores go low

  1. Hi Jim have played Cleveland Hybrid set for a few years now like them but hoping to get into the Wilson Dynapower forged irons if or when they are released do you know anything about them happy Golfing from Downunder love your golf club build videos

  2. How does that 7 iron feel? I don't mean compared to a forged iron but say to a good cast iron? I have hit a few shots with a cheaper Ram version of this type of club and there was dead feel. The result was ok and I think for the type of player they are made for the visual feedback might be enough. Just wondering if this cleveland lacked in that area.
